Bunkie on the Hill
Dubbeldam Architecture + Design
Dubbeldam Architecture + Design
Dubbeldam Architecture + Design

Team:Dubbeldam Architecture + Design
Size:93 m²
Location:Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
Feature:
Project - Perched atop a hill in Muskoka, Ontario, the Bunkie on the Hill by Dubbeldam Architecture + Design offers a contemporary twist on the traditional A-frame cabin. This compact 93-square-metre retreat seamlessly blends into its forested surroundings while providing a serene escape for a multi-generational family.
The cabin's most striking feature is its split gabled roof, a clever reinterpretation of the classic A-frame silhouette. This innovative design creates two intersecting volumes, allowing for strategically placed windows that frame views of the treetops and the lake below. The result is a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the interior, enhancing the connection to nature.
Clad in greyed wood siding and topped with a standing-seam metal roof, the exterior presents a cool contrast to the warm cedar entryway. Inside, a thoughtful mix of wood species - including oak, maple, and Western red cedar - differentiates various planes, creating a rich, tactile experience.
Despite its modest footprint, the Bunkie maximizes functionality through built-in storage nooks and multi-purpose spaces. Sustainability is at the forefront, with passive insulation techniques, triple-glazed windows, and FSC-rated wood products employed throughout.
Dubbeldam Architecture + Design has crafted a retreat that not only respects its environment but elevates the cabin typology, offering a fresh perspective on lakeside living in the Canadian wilderness.
