NAP Architects
Titled "Library in the Earth," this tranquil sunken reading retreat immerses visitors in an earthy, womb-like space celebrating the agricultural roots of its location within the KURKKUFIELDS farm in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture.
Designed by Takushi Nakamura & NAP Architects, the subterranean library gently emerges from the verdant valley it occupies like a bulbous protrusion from the earth itself. An intentionally understated approach path subtly draws people into the sculpted, grassy underground corridor lined with bookshelves.
The architecture is pared back, eschewing columns and beams, with a dramatically cantilevered concrete void slab resting only on perimeter retaining walls. The seamless soil-finished surfaces blend into a carpet of drooping vegetation that introduces a hushed humidity.
The ceiling heights fluctuate to create hidden child-scaled spaces and intimate reading nooks. At the deepest point, a terraced amphitheater encircled by shelves houses a storytelling area filled with books for local farm workers and children.
The 40mm thick wooden shelf slats extend upwards as structural ribs, their interconnected load paths representing the interdependence required to create resilient community spaces. An overhead skylight frames circling clouds like a portal to the wider world this rural oasis ultimately serves.

Established in 2002 by Hiroshi Nakamura, the Tokyo-based practice Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP has emerged as a leading voice in organic, contextual design thatharmonizes architecture with nature and human experiences. Led today by Nakamura and a team of directors including Soichiro Takai, Naoko Sumitani, Hirotoshi Koizumi, Masaki Hirakawa, Kohei Omori, Tomohiko Kimura, and Sadaharu Aoto, the firm takes a "microscopic" approach that draws inspiration from natural phenomena, human behavior, and emotional responses.
Their design philosophy centers on fostering an organic relationship between the built environment, nature, and the human body. Nakamura aims to create "architecture that can only be found there" by thoughtfully responding to the unique regional context - incorporating local history, culture, industry, and materials. In recent years, the firm has looked to the essence of traditional Japanese architecture and garden design to inform their contemporary work.
With a staff of 40 architects and designers, Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP offers full services including architectural design, urban planning, product design, strategic consulting, education programs, and research initiatives. Their award-winning projects have been internationally recognized across numerous prestigious competitions and publications.
