Schemata Architects
Nestled in the heart of Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture, the Funamachi Base emerges as a captivating blend of tradition and innovation. Designed by Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, this mixed-use facility seamlessly integrates a café and Japanese confectionery shop into the urban fabric, paying homage to the area's rich history as a bustling river port.
The project's standout feature is its ingenious blurring of boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. By extending the adjacent park's greenery into the site and employing consistent materials throughout, Nagasaka creates a fluid environment where visitors effortlessly transition from public to private realms. The architecture becomes an extension of the park itself, inviting passersby to engage with the confectionery-making process and immerse themselves in the sensory experience of freshly steamed buns and kneaded sweet bean paste.
A striking trio of volumes topped by an expansive roof defines the structure, housing a revived traditional sweets shop alongside modern dining spaces. The designers' thoughtful approach is evident in details like sandblasted PVC pipes traversing indoor and outdoor areas, and multi-functional bulging foundations that serve as counters, benches, and even a well for confectionery production.
This architectural gem not only revitalizes a historic district but also aims to catalyze broader urban regeneration, potentially attracting young locals and urban dwellers to Ogaki. The Funamachi Base stands as a testament to the power of architecture in fostering community connections and preserving cultural heritage while embracing contemporary needs.
