In the heart of Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, a groundbreaking architectural project has emerged, challenging conventional notions of urban living and community spaces. The Maebashi Galleria, designed by renowned architect Akihisa Hirata, is a multifaceted complex that seamlessly integrates residential units, commercial spaces, and a vibrant central plaza.
The project's most striking feature is its innovative structural composition. Twenty-six residential units, each with its own garden, are suspended above ground level, creating the illusion of a floating village. This aerial arrangement allows for an expansive public plaza beneath, fostering a unique symbiosis between private and communal spaces.
Hirata's design draws inspiration from the scale of Jomon period circular settlements rather than traditional Western plazas. The result is an intimate yet open environment that invites both residents and visitors to engage with the space. The seemingly triangular floor plans of the apartments, featuring diagonal walls, establish a fluid connection with the individual gardens, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside.
The Maebashi Galleria transcends its functional classification as a mixed-use development. It represents a bold architectural statement that reimagines the concept of a plaza, transforming a former parking lot into a dynamic urban ecosystem. By intertwining living spaces with public amenities, the project embodies Maebashi's aspiration to "sprout with greenery," offering a new paradigm for civic architecture that is deeply rooted in its context while reaching for the sky.

Founded in 2005 by visionary Japanese architect Akihisa Hirata, the eponymous Tokyo-based practice has consistently pushed the boundaries of architectural design, blurring the lines between the natural and built environments. Hirata, a professor at Kyoto University since 2015, leads a multidisciplinary team that approaches each project with a deep understanding of ecological systems and a commitment to sustainable design principles.
The firm's portfolio showcases a diverse range of projects, from intimate residential designs to expansive cultural institutions, all characterized by their innovative spatial arrangements and integration with surrounding landscapes. Notable works include the award-winning Art Museum & Library in Ota (2017), recipient of the 2018 Murano Togo Prize and the 2022 Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Prize, and the Tree-ness House (2017), which exemplifies the studio's concept of "tangling" - a dynamic interplay between structure, function, and nature.
Hirata's theoretical framework, explored in publications such as "Tangling" (2011) and "Discovering New" (2018), has garnered international acclaim. The practice's experimental approach was recognized with the prestigious Golden Lion at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia in 2012. By reimagining the relationship between architecture and its context, Akihisa Hirata Architecture Office continues to influence the global discourse on 21st-century urban design, fostering environments that are both ecologically responsive and socially engaging.
