Project:Sentosa Sensoryscape
Team:Serie Architects + Multiply Architects
Size:13089 m²
Location:Singapore
Feature:
Project - Sentosa Sensoryscape emerges as Singapore's latest architectural marvel, weaving together nature, technology, and sensory experience in an unprecedented way. This ambitious 350-meter pedestrian connector, designed by Serie Architects and Multiply Architects, transforms a challenging ridgeline site into an accessible sensory journey linking Resorts World Sentosa to the island's southern beaches.
At its core, the project introduces an innovative dual-level walkway system, distinguished by its striking 'hammock' structures that double as public seating. The walkway's most remarkable feature is its series of six distinct sensory gardens, each housed within sophisticated diagrid structures that appear to float along the ridge. These basket-like pavilions, realized through parametric design, create an intricate interplay of light, space, and nature.
The gardens themselves are masterpieces of multisensory design. From the 'Tactile Trellis' with its petal-like precast concrete elements to the 'Scented Sphere' with its year-round aromatic plantings, each space offers a unique sensory experience. The 'Symphony Streams' introduces an unprecedented acoustic element with its 200-pail polyphonic water fountain, while the 'Glow Garden' transforms the nighttime experience with illuminated 'stalk' structures.
What sets Sensoryscape apart is its seamless integration of universal accessibility with ambitious architectural vision. The project not only overcomes significant topographical challenges to create a step-free corridor but also establishes a new paradigm for public space design. As the first phase of a broader masterplan for Sentosa and Pulau Brani, it represents a bold statement about the future of leisure architecture – one where accessibility, sensory engagement, and environmental consciousness converge to create spaces that are both spectacular and inclusive.
Design Team - Serie Architects, established in 2006 by Christopher Lee and Kapil Gupta, has emerged as one of the most intellectually rigorous and spatially innovative architectural practices of its generation. With offices strategically positioned in London, Mumbai, and Singapore, the practice has cultivated a distinctive approach to architecture that marries formal sophistication with contextual sensitivity.
Under the leadership of Christopher Lee, who serves as the Arthur Rotch Design Critic in Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design, the firm has garnered international recognition for its typological innovations and creative interpretation of architectural precedents. The practice's portfolio, strengthened by partners Bolam Lee and Martin Jameson, demonstrates exceptional versatility across civic, cultural, and educational sectors.
Serie's meteoric rise in the architectural sphere is evidenced by their numerous competition victories and prestigious accolades, including the 2023 President's Design Award for the Singapore State Courts and multiple World Architecture Festival awards. Their work is characterized by a methodological approach that combines rigorous geometric exploration with material innovation, resulting in buildings that respond eloquently to their cultural and physical contexts.
The practice's commitment to research-driven design is reflected in their groundbreaking projects such as the Oasis Terraces in Singapore and the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai. These works exemplify Serie's ability to synthesize complex programmatic requirements with climatic considerations and cultural narratives, creating architecture that is both contemporary and contextually resonant.
