改造后的首层完全用于公共功能，包括临终关怀室、共享食堂和多功能厅，向全岛居民开放。项目特别注重适老化细节，加宽楼梯、增设扶手、实现全面无障碍通行。将生活空间朝向阳光面的调整大大改善了自然采光和通风条件。

通过融入当地色彩和材料，如水洗石涂料和钢柱，设计与周围环境形成了和谐对话。这次精心的改造不仅提高了96位老年居民的生活质量，更成为乡村振兴的标杆，证明了富有同理心、因地制宜的设计能为被遗忘的空间和社区注入新的生机。

In a groundbreaking fusion of architectural ingenuity and social responsibility, line+ Studio has transformed an abandoned school into a vibrant elderly care center on Chaishan Island, Zhoushan. This 799-square-meter project, completed in 2024, reimagines rural elderly care through innovative design and thoughtful repurposing.

Drawing inspiration from the island's maritime heritage, the center's striking silhouette evokes a floating ship, its curved underside and cantilevered form creating a powerful visual metaphor. This design not only pays homage to the residents' fishing backgrounds but also serves as a catalyst for memory and emotional connection.

The architects have masterfully addressed the challenges of the existing structure, maximizing public spaces and introducing a series of rooftop terraces connected by ramps. This vertical expansion of communal areas fosters social interaction and combats isolation. The ground floor, now entirely dedicated to public functions, includes end-of-life care rooms, a shared dining hall, and multipurpose spaces open to all islanders.

Particular attention has been paid to age-friendly details, with widened staircases, additional handrails, and barrier-free access throughout. The reorientation of living spaces towards the sun-facing side significantly improves natural light and ventilation.

By integrating local color palettes and materials, such as washed stone coatings and steel columns, the design creates a harmonious dialogue with its surroundings. This thoughtful renovation not only enhances the quality of life for 96 elderly residents but also stands as a beacon of rural revitalization, proving that sensitive, context-driven design can breathe new life into forgotten spaces and communities.
