In the heart of Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, a remarkable transformation has breathed new life into an abandoned mountain village. The "Auberge in a Vanishing Village" project, designed by Motose Saita Architects, reimagines a deserted settlement as a cutting-edge culinary destination and boutique lodging experience.

Perched on a peninsula-like cliff carved by a river, the site offers breathtaking views along the valley. The architects have masterfully integrated the new structures with the existing landscape, preserving ancient stone walls and utilizing the natural topography to create a harmonious blend of old and new.

The project's standout feature is its innovative approach to extreme weather conditions. With snowfall exceeding 3 meters, the dining area and its approach are elevated to the second floor, ensuring unobstructed views year-round while maintaining the village's modest scale. The cottage accommodations, arranged in a dispersed layout, pay homage to the original settlement pattern and allow guests to immerse themselves in the surrounding flora and snow-covered scenery.

Sustainability and local integration are at the core of this design. The architects have incorporated traditional roof elements like "yukiwari" (snow-splitting components) and repurposed materials from existing houses. In a nod to local practices, the project utilizes mountain stream water, collaborating with residents to maintain this heritage.

This visionary project revitalizes a forgotten village and creates a unique destination where avant-garde cuisine meets traditional Japanese mountain life, offering a model for sustainable rural rejuvenation.
