Project - Nestled in a vibrant festival district of Iwata City, Shizuoka, the Nishimachi Residence brilliantly fuses community celebration with modern living. Designed by Yosuke Kodatsuka of TYdo architects, this two-story wooden abode ingeniously caters to the client's desire for a gathering space while preserving family privacy. The standout feature is the seamless integration of a semi-outdoor living room cum parking area and a family living room, separated by a courtyard. This innovative layout allows the spaces to be flexibly partitioned or combined via blinds, accommodating both festive gatherings that extend late into the night as well as intimate family time. Conceptually distinct from its surroundings which blend old residences with new developments, the residence's sculptural form takes on a layered box aesthetic. This visually striking facade articulates four zones transitioning from the welcoming communal areas to the most private quarters. Kodatsuka's sensitive approach taps into the region's festival heritage and communal fabric, offering a contemporary take on Iwata's rich locality. The Nishimachi Residence exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can foster age-old traditions within a modern residential setting.
