Project - Challenging conventional education models, the recently completed CAA Liangzhu Campus Phase I by Atelier FCJZ pioneers an innovative living-learning environment that intertwines academic and residential spaces. The 180,000 sqm campus in Hangzhou embraces hands-on pedagogy and an open, flexible architectural approach that prioritizes user participation. The stretching studio spaces, topped by vaulted arches, dissolve boundaries between private and public realms.

Designed for multifunctionality, these light-filled volumes host design reviews, exhibitions, performances and even sports activities alongside daily creative work. Dormitories are stacked atop the studios, allowing students to transition seamlessly between living and learning. Openness is a driving concept, with the architects designing changeable spaces that can adapt to evolving needs. The vertically-organized library comprises research towers and a "view-finder" for meditation.

The gymnasium's simplicity enables diverse events, while trompe l'oeil window frames in studios blur the lines between 2D and 3D. Exemplifying the vision of architecture shaped by its users, interventions and installations by students and faculty activate spaces across the campus. This dynamic interplay showcases the dialogue Atelier FCJZ has fostered between the built environment and CAA's pioneering educational approach.

Design Team - Founded in 1993 by Yonghe Zhang and Lijia Lu, Atelier FCJZ has grown from an innovative research studio into an internationally renowned firm. For over 20 years, FCJZ has made significant impacts in architecture, arts and design, garnering prestigious awards for their research-driven approach focused on construction innovation.

Key projects like the Jishou Art Museum, Shedian Culture Center and Shanghai PS1 demonstrate FCJZ's forward-thinking vision, rich experience and unique creativity across disciplines. Whether building an art bridge, reimagining vernacular forms or inserting boxed "storefronts" into a museum, FCJZ's experimental spirit and contextual sensitivity yield engaging spaces that enhance urban life. Their bold reinventions anchor cultural vibrancy in China's rapid development.
