Project - Nestled in the picturesque village of Horní Malá Úpa within Czech Republic's Krkonoše National Park, the Bučina Cottage emerges as an ingenious reinterpretation of traditional mountain architecture. Designed by ADR architects, this compact yet highly functional dwelling seamlessly blends vernacular elements with contemporary sensibilities, offering a captivating retreat for the manager of a nearby ski resort. The cottage's distinctive cruciform layout pays homage to the region's characteristic building typologies while adeptly framing panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks, including the majestic Sněžka and Lysečina summits. Each arm of the cross houses distinct living spaces, unified by a spiral staircase coiled around a central chimney breast – an inventive focal point that doubles as a cozy fireside nook. Crafted as a lightweight timber structure resting on a concrete plinth, the Bučina Cottage embraces its alpine setting with an ingenious design that allows it to seamlessly integrate with the shifting snow levels between summer and winter. The warm, unfinished spruce façade, coated in a traditional red paint, echoes the aesthetic of historic mountain dwellings while ushering the material into the meticulously crafted interiors.
