LIU XIANG DESIGN

Project:Film Derivative Museum

Team:LIU XIANG DESIGN.INC(LXD)

Size:3083 m²

Location:Xichang, China

Feature:

Project - Nestled in the Anning River Valley of Xichang, China, the Film Derivative Museum stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of architecture, cinematic art, natural environment, and cultural heritage. Designed by architect Liu Xiang, this striking edifice is part of the ambitious Xichang Jianchuan Film Museum settlement, a sprawling complex dedicated to celebrating the magic of cinema.

The museum's most distinctive feature is its composition of five cylindrical volumes, inspired by traditional film reels and projectors. These circular forms, varying in height and size, create a dynamic silhouette that seems to dance against the backdrop of Xichang's tropical highland landscape. The central cylinder serves as the main hall, while the surrounding four house specialized exhibition spaces, each dedicated to different aspects of film memorabilia and merchandise.

Drawing influence from the rich cultural tapestry of the local Yi ethnic minority, the building incorporates circular motifs prevalent in Yi art and festivals. This cultural sensitivity extends to the interior, where umbrella-shaped exhibition halls pay homage to traditional Yi craftsmanship.

The museum's facade, clad in perforated titanium panels and accented with wood-grain textures, creates a play of light and shadow reminiscent of cinematic techniques. A curved glass entrance hall breaks away from conventional museum design, offering a welcoming gesture to visitors.

Covering over 3,000 square meters, the Film Derivative Museum not only showcases an extensive collection of movie-related artifacts but also provides interactive spaces that bridge the gap between film history and contemporary culture. With its innovative design and cultural resonance, this museum stands as a new landmark in Xichang, inviting visitors to explore the fascinating world of cinema and its far-reaching influence.
