In the picturesque LUXELAKES area of Chengdu, China, DL atelier has completed an enigmatic new children's museum that evokes the sculptural forms of icebergs. The Dotsss Children's Museum comprises a cluster of simple cubic volumes, united beneath a dramatic draped membrane that billows overhead.

The architects liken the design to the vast majority of an iceberg's mass lying unseen beneath the water's surface. The pristine white tensile membrane softens the cuboid forms into an indistinct, fluid form that shifts with changing light and viewpoints. This immense fabric veil conceals the building's mechanical equipment on the rooftops, creating a seamless, sculptural exterior.

Beneath the draped canopy, the exhibition halls are conceived as flexible, open-plan spaces that can adapt to diverse installations and experiences over time. These simple box-like volumes are left with minimal interior detailing to prioritize future adaptability. Outdoor courtyards and soaring atrium spaces connect the galleries, enabling free-flowing circulation tailored to children's explorative tendencies.

Large windows dissolve the boundaries between interior and exterior, extending the exhibition spaces outwards and drawing the surrounding landscapes inwards as scenery to be observed. The result is a museum design that stays malleable and open-ended – providing young visitors with an engaging, transformative spatial experience akin to uncovering the mysteries of an iceberg.
