Bodegas Faustino Winery
Foster + Partners

Foster + Partners

Project:Bodegas Faustino Winery

Team:Foster + Partners

Size:1090 m²

Location: Oyón-Oion,Spain

Feature:

Project - Foster + Partners has masterfully reimagined the historic Bodegas Faustino winery in Spain with a revolutionary visitor centre that marries architectural innovation with environmental consciousness. The extension, marking the vineyard's 160th anniversary in Rioja Alavesa, emerges as a testament to sustainable design while honoring the region's rich winemaking heritage.

The centerpiece of this transformation is an ambitious barrel-vaulted structure that spans 50 meters, reaching skyward to a height of 10 meters. Designed as a 'Planet 1.0' building – indicating its minimal carbon footprint can be absorbed by Earth's natural systems – the visitor centre showcases Foster + Partners' expertise in merging aesthetic excellence with environmental stewardship. The column-free interior, achieved through an innovative timber arch system, creates a remarkably versatile space that references the winery's industrial past while embracing contemporary sustainable principles.

Environmental performance stands at the forefront of the design, with the building achieving Energy Plus status through its extensive photovoltaic array that generates surplus power for the entire estate. The architecture responds thoughtfully to its context with strategic overhangs mitigating solar gain, while the careful selection of materials – predominantly timber and earth tones – creates a harmonious dialogue with the surrounding vineyard landscape.

The project transcends mere architectural intervention, encompassing a comprehensive transformation of the site. From the renovation of existing cellars to the implementation of innovative landscape strategies addressing biodiversity and climate resilience, the extension represents a holistic approach to winery design that sets new standards for sustainable architecture in the wine industry.

Design Team - Foster + Partners, established in 1967 by Pritzker Prize laureate Norman Foster, stands as one of architecture's most influential practices, pioneering sustainable design and technological innovation across six decades. From its London headquarters, the practice has evolved into a global powerhouse with a portfolio spanning landmark projects such as the Gherkin in London, Apple Park in Cupertino, and the Reichstag restoration in Berlin.

Under the continued leadership of Lord Foster and the stewardship of Hennick & Company since 2021, the practice operates through an integrated design approach, combining architecture, engineering, and industrial design. Their methodology is distinguished by a commitment to sustainability, embodied in their proprietary Foster + Partners Responsibility Framework (FRF), which addresses ten crucial environmental themes including energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and ecological impact.

The firm's organizational structure reflects its collaborative ethos, with design oversight maintained through a Design Board that reviews all projects across their architectural studios. This systematic approach has garnered numerous accolades, including multiple RIBA Stirling Prizes, and has shaped iconic structures across 45 countries.

With approximately 1,500 professionals across offices in London, New York, Hong Kong, and Madrid, Foster + Partners continues to push the boundaries of architectural innovation while maintaining its founding principles of sustainable, user-centered design. Their work demonstrates how architectural excellence can address contemporary challenges while creating enduring value for future generations.
