Design Features: The project occupies a promontory above the Guadalhorce Reservoir in Ardales, Andalusia, roughly midway between the entrance and exit of the Caminito del Rey. It serves both as a place of arrival and as an interchange for parking, shuttle transport and visitor information. Rather than treating the landscape as distant scenery, the building turns arrival itself into a measured prelude to the Gaitanes Gorge.

The 550 m² building flows around two enclosed service volumes containing restrooms, a café and support spaces. Visitors first enter a dim interior washed by indirect daylight. As they move through the hall, the enclosure gradually gives way to the reservoir horizon. This progression from shadow to openness allows the landscape to unfold through movement instead of being delivered as a single panoramic image.

A sequence of articulated glulam portal frames gives the centre its distinctive profile. Each frame bends and shifts at roof level; repeated along the building, they form an undulating silhouette that abstracts the eroded karst formations of the gorge. Timber, insulated panels, a waterproof membrane and a micro-slate finish create a lightweight envelope whose structure remains legible through rhythm, depth and shadow.

Reversibility defines the building's relationship with its protected setting. The glulam structure and enclosure were conceived to be dismantled, allowing the site to recover as fully as possible and the principal materials to re-enter a recycling cycle. Sustainability is therefore embedded in the way the building meets the ground, in the hierarchy of its construction and in the possibility of its eventual removal.

The environmental systems extend this restrained approach. Photovoltaic panels on the parking canopies supply off-grid power, while buried earth tubes temper incoming air through the stable temperature of the ground. Before stepping onto the Caminito del Rey, visitors encounter a building that combines transport, orientation and environmental learning. Its timber rhythm, changing light and framed view of the water tune the pace at which the landscape is perceived.

Design Team: Luis Machuca Arquitectos is a Málaga-based practice led by Luis Machuca Santa-Cruz and Luis Machuca Casares. Its work spans public buildings, cultural and educational facilities, housing and urban projects, with functional efficiency, environmental responsibility and clear construction forming a consistent basis for design.

The studio's portfolio includes the rehabilitation of the Caminito del Rey and its visitor centre, the new headquarters of the Provincial Council of Málaga, the University of Málaga complex for Social and Business Studies, the Felipe VI Theatre and residential work in Marbella. It has won public and private competitions in Spain and Germany, and its projects have been exhibited in cities including Madrid, New York, São Paulo, Paris, Washington and Milan.

The Caminito del Rey work brought the practice sustained international recognition. The rehabilitation received both the Grand Prix and Public Choice Award at the 2016 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage, while the project won first prize at the 2017 Archmarathon in Milan. The visitor centre carries the same understanding of public infrastructure: arrival, service and environmental performance are resolved together, while material and spatial order deepen an awareness of place.
