Kornmarktplatz
Herzog & de Meuron

Herzog & de Meuron breathes new life into a historic Bregenz building, seamlessly blending heritage and modernity in their latest architectural gem. The Kornmarktplatz Townhouse, nestled in the cultural heart of the Austrian city, stands as a testament to thoughtful urban renewal and innovative design.

This five-story marvel houses a boutique hotel, a versatile cultural event space, and a private apartment, all while preserving its neo-baroque façade. The architects have masterfully retained the building's historical essence while infusing it with contemporary functionality.

The structure's most striking feature is its barrel-shaped roof and uniform white metal cladding, creating a cohesive aesthetic that complements the existing light blue and white ornamented façade. This clever integration allows the townhouse to sit harmoniously within its urban context while asserting its own architectural identity.

Generous glazing offers breathtaking views of Lake Constance and the Pfänder mountain, connecting interior spaces with the surrounding landscape. A central vertical access core and roof terrace, complete with a skylight, flood the building's heart with natural light.

Herzog & de Meuron's design deftly navigates the transition from public to private spaces, with the north-facing square-side exuding a public presence, while the south-facing courtyard offers a more intimate atmosphere. This nuanced approach to spatial planning ensures the Kornmarktplatz Townhouse serves as both a vibrant cultural hub and a tranquil urban retreat.
