Design Features: Urban Egg stands in Jeonpo-dong, Busanjin-gu, Busan, where a district of small factories and warehouses has gradually become the commercial and cultural quarter known as Jeollidan-gil. Confronted by narrow lanes, dense buildings and competing urban signals, U.GA Architects did not treat the 454 m² mixed-use facility as an isolated object. It is conceived instead as a refuge within the city: a layered concrete shell that makes room for pause, accommodation and recovery amid the surrounding intensity.

The five-storey reinforced-concrete structure is wrapped in board-formed surfaces that retain the grain of timber shuttering. Curved walls, recessed openings and overlapping planes limit direct exposure and give the building the protective character of an egg shell. Concrete is allowed to keep its weight, but curvature, shadow and carefully placed apertures turn that weight into enclosure. Timber and warmer finishes appear where the body makes frequent contact, adding a gentler tactile register to the mineral envelope.

Circulation unfolds as a vertical urban walk. Narrow passages, turning stairs, controlled sightlines and intermittent daylight prevent the building from being read all at once. Small windows, terraces and roof openings reconnect visitors with the street, sky and water at carefully timed moments. The sequence is organised less by room names than by bodily movement: compression, pause, change of direction and release gradually slow the pace carried in from the city.

OA on the fourth floor is the most inward part of the journey. An oval pool sits within curved concrete walls, while an opening overhead brings sky, daylight and weather onto the water. Views of the city temporarily disappear as enclosure, sound and reflection gather around the body. Named after the first syllable of “Oasis”, OA suggests an inhalation, drawing attention away from urban noise and into an immersive space that evokes a cave, a bath and a protective inner chamber.

One level above, SYS turns back towards the city. Its terrace and open edges extend the view across neighbouring roofs; as the final syllable of “Oasis”, SYS answers OA with an exhalation. Together, the two spaces give the vertical route a rhythm of retreat and release. Urban Egg is therefore more than a building for commercial and accommodation uses. It is a spatial instrument for urban recovery, first sheltering the individual and then returning a recalibrated awareness to the city.

Design Team: U.GA Architects was founded in Busan in 2016 by architect Yu Dae-woo and works across architecture, urban design and interiors. Yu completed his graduate studies at Pusan National University and previously practised with Daewoo Engineering & Construction and Ilshin Architects. Alongside leading the studio, he serves as an adjunct professor at Dong-A University. The practice has developed residential, commercial, cultural and urban-renewal projects from its base in Busan.

The studio seeks a balance between spatial experience and formal resolution, using clear massing, organisation and material expression to respond to each site. Form is not treated as an autonomous image; it emerges from movement, bodily perception, changing light and the building's relationship with the city. In Urban Egg, layered concrete walls, the rising route and the alternating contraction and release of OA and SYS make that approach particularly legible.

The practice has received recognition including World Architecture Community Awards, Korean Architecture Awards and Busan Architecture Awards, while Urban Egg was selected in the 52nd cycle of the WA Awards. Led by Yu Dae-woo with Soon-jung Shim and Hyo-kyung Kwon on the design team, the project brings commercial space, accommodation, water and an urban terrace into one continuous sensory journey within a compact 454 m² building.
