Design Features: Situated within the subtropical landscape of Queensland, Australia, Vespa House by Habitat Studio Architects is a rigorously conceived residence that responds with precision to its climate, site, and the evolving rhythms of family life. Completed in 2024, this 540-square-metre single-family dwelling is grounded in bioclimatic design principles, weaving together the material weight of raw concrete, the warmth of natural timber, and the precision of black metal detailing into an architectural language that is simultaneously raw and refined.
The western facade of the house stands as the project's most sculpturally commanding element. This monolithic wall operates with a dual architectural identity, functioning both as a climatic shield against the intense afternoon sun and as a spatial boundary that secures private thresholds within the landscape. Above it, a pure subtropical roof form appears to float with architectural ease, deploying deep overhangs, permeable timber battening, and lush rooftop planting as a precisely calibrated environmental system that integrates passive ventilation, solar shading, and visual greening. The cumulative effect of these layered architectural gestures is the dissolution of the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing the residence to settle into its landscape and respond fluidly to seasonal change.
The most original spatial strategy within the Vespa project is its central courtyard, positioned at the compositional heart of the dwelling. This inward-facing space performs a dual function as both a microclimate regulator and a social nucleus, around which open outward-looking living zones and intimate private retreats are choreographed in complementary balance. Public and private realms are thoughtfully stratified throughout the plan, lending the house a spatial elasticity that accommodates the full range of family life. The interplay of shifting light, textured materiality, and layered planting sustains an atmosphere of quiet vitality throughout the interior.
Sustainability is not a supplementary dimension of the Vespa narrative but is structural to its architectural logic. Passive solar design, energy-efficient glazing, and photovoltaic systems operate in concert to reduce energy demand, while water-sensitive landscaping and biodiversity-focused planting enhance the ecological value of the site. Durable, low-maintenance materials were selected above all for their longevity, ensuring that the house retains its quality and character across time. Vespa is, at its most essential, an architectural instrument precisely tuned to its climate, its context, and its inhabitants, a place where everyday living is enriched by the sustained and gentle presence of the natural world.
Design Team: Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Burleigh Heads on Australia's Gold Coast, Habitat Studio Architects is a boutique, multi-disciplinary practice operating at the intersection of rigorous design thinking and environmental responsibility. Under the leadership of Principal Architect and Director Wayne Greenland, the studio has cultivated a design philosophy centred on site specificity, climatic sensitivity, and material authenticity, ensuring that each project articulates a distinct sense of place rooted in its physical and cultural context. Environmental sustainability is embedded structurally within the practice's design process from the earliest stages of conception, treated not as an option but as a fundamental design parameter.
Recognised as an Australian Institute of Architects A+ Practice, Habitat Studio commands a diverse portfolio spanning high-end residential and beach houses, multi-residential townhouses and apartments, mixed-use commercial, hospitality, and interior design projects. The practice has completed more than 300 projects to date, including 79 residential, 51 multi-residential, 48 commercial, and 129 renovation commissions, with a project footprint extending along Australia's Eastern Coastline from Cairns, Airlie Beach, and the Gold Coast to Melbourne, and internationally to Singapore and Papua New Guinea.
The studio is currently led by Wayne Greenland alongside a core team of experienced architects and designers, including Architects Cale Allan and Lauren Lovell, Project Leader Florencia Henriquez, and Architectural Graduates Joshua Clark and Carina Soleckhan, together with Architectural Draftsperson Tomas Kavakama. The practice is distinguished by a close and productive collaborative relationship between client, architect, and builder, and through the precise resolution of detail, the rigorous selection of materials, and the systematic organisation of space, consistently delivers architecture that transcends the functional and achieves genuine experiential value.
