Project Name: The Yard, Dalian Cultural Center Location: Dalian , China Design Team: Neri&Hu Design and Research Office Total Floor Area: 4631 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: DONG Image, Runzi Zhu Feature: Project - Neri&Hu Design and Research Office completed a striking adaptive reuse project in the heart of Dalian, transforming urban industrial heritage through innovative architectural language and thoughtful site integration. The Yard, Dalian Cultural Center converts a 40-year-old chemical research institute compound into a vibrant cultural destination, demonstrating the perfect synthesis of traditional industrial architecture with contemporary design thinking. The compound is strategically positioned near university campuses and software parks, this 4631-square-meter complex captures the innovative spirit of adaptive reuse while paying homage to the region's industrial memory. The project's most distinctive feature lies in its continuous weathering Corten steel system that transforms the original U-shaped building configuration into an enclosed courtyard space, creating a new spatial order through a series of walls, screens and canopies. Neri&Hu's ingenious design solution unifies 6 existing buildings with varying heights and distinct facades. The architects employed Corten steel as the primary surface material, chosen for its industrial relevance and capacity to record the passage of time through weathering processes. This material strategy creates a secondary facade layer that mediates between existing stucco facades and transformed interior spaces, generating architectural poetry through new-old dialogue. The compound's programming encompasses galleries, lifestyle retail, hospitality, cinema, theater, and office space. The former workers' dormitory has been converted into office space, while a small library positioned near the entrance serves the public and surrounding university community. Segmented yet continuous spaces create natural narrative pauses within the circulation path, allowing each functional area to shine within the broader cultural narrative. Most notably, the project transforms what was once an introverted parking lot into a contemplative plaza centered around a large rock feature, drawing inspiration from Chinese garden design principles. This demonstrates how contemporary adaptive reuse can push the boundaries of urban renewal possibilities while respecting historical memory. Design Team - Founded in 2006 by principals Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu in Shanghai, China, Neri&Hu Design and Research Office has established itself as a pioneering force in contemporary Asian architectural practice, consistently bridging rigorous design methodology with cultural innovation technologies. With headquarters in Shanghai, the firm has established itself as a comprehensive interdisciplinary consultancy providing professional design services across diverse building typologies throughout China and the broader international region. Lyndon Neri, a graduate of University of California, Berkeley (Bachelor of Architecture) with a Master's degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design, co-leads the practice with principal Rossana Hu (Bachelor of Architecture from Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan, and Master of Architecture from Princeton University), bringing international academic background to their work. The Neri&Hu name reflects the foundational philosophy of achieving design excellence through cross-cultural collaboration------a principle that manifests throughout their comprehensive project methodology. The firm's design philosophy centers on thorough investigation of diverse building typologies, with particular emphasis on material expression and spatial innovation. This approach synthesizes global perspectives with localized sensibilities, yielding significant works from adaptive reuse projects to contemporary cultural institutions that demonstrate continuous advancement of place-responsive architecture that breaks through in both cultural heritage and modern functionality. Neri&Hu's mastery of new-old architectural language integration systems and material dialogue methodologies, along with applications of advanced adaptive reuse techniques, underscores their contribution to China's evolving architectural discourse. Their recent work on The Yard project exemplifies their persistent pursuit of pushing design boundaries while respecting historical contexts------positioning them as thought leaders in contemporary cross-cultural architectural practice. Neri&Hu maintains headquarters in Shanghai with a vibrant team composed of international collaborators from around the globe, speaking over 30 languages and contributing to the firm's continuously evolving design discourse. This multicultural structure enables the firm to address complex architectural challenges with global consciousness and localized understanding, establishing Neri&Hu as an important contributor to contemporary architectural creation in China and beyond. 2025 Previous Next
Group Projects Architecture | Archicasting
Project Name: House in a Meadow Location: North East, New York, United States Design Team: Group Projects Architecture Floor Area: 2,800 ft² (approx. 260 m²) Completion Year: 2024 Photographer: Nicholas Venezia Feature: Project - Black-clad gabled volumes emerge from a meadow in upstate New York, where Group Projects Architecture has designed a residence that masterfully navigates the dialogue between architectural intervention and natural landscape. The 2,800-square-foot House in a Meadow demonstrates how thoughtful site positioning can enhance both the building's functionality and its inhabitants' experience of the surrounding environment. Rather than placing the structure at the property's highest point, the architects made the strategic decision to nestle the home at the meadow level along the base of an existing ridge. This unconventional choice not only preserved the site's mature trees but also created a natural windbreak and established a compelling spatial narrative that unfolds as visitors descend from the arrival point. The project's most distinctive feature is a bold excavation move: a 100-foot-long slice carved into the ridge creates a dramatic concrete-retained courtyard that serves as an intimate counterpoint to the expansive meadow views. This engineered "outdoor room" exemplifies the project's sophisticated approach to landscape integration, where architectural intervention enhances rather than diminishes the site's natural qualities. The building's form takes cues from vernacular barn architecture but elevates it through precise material execution. The exterior is unified by black corrugated metal that wraps continuously from facades to roof, creating a monolithic appearance that's subtly animated by the material's wave pattern and exposed painted rafter tails. Large glazed openings pierce this dark envelope, offering strategic views while adding depth to the simple gabled profile. Inside, four Douglas fir-clad millwork blocks float within the open plan, functioning as both spatial organizers and service elements. The interior palette is restrained yet rich, combining white surfaces with concrete floors and bronze-framed sliding doors. A gently vaulted ceiling above the communal spaces adds a cloud-like softness to the interior volume, while lower ceilings in private areas create more intimate zones – demonstrating how subtle spatial modulation can enhance the domestic experience without compromising architectural clarity. Design Team - Group Projects, established in 2018 in Brooklyn, represents an emerging force in contemporary architectural practice that exemplifies a rigorous approach to design through collaborative methodology. The practice, while relatively young in its institutional timeline, leverages the extensive expertise of its founding partners who bring experience from prestigious firms including Gensler, SOM, and LEVENBETTS. The firm is led by a triumvirate of accomplished architects: Andrew Feuerstein, Jonathan Man, and Bret Quagliara. Feuerstein, serving as the Lead Architect, brings significant institutional and residential expertise from his tenure at LEVENBETTS, complemented by his environmental design background from the University of Colorado and advanced architectural studies at Parsons. Man contributes his comprehensive experience from Gensler and SOM, backed by his Berkeley education, while Quagliara adds a multidisciplinary perspective that bridges architecture and graphic design. The practice's design philosophy emphasizes a holistic approach to project delivery, fostering intensive collaboration among clients, technical consultants, contractors, and fabricators. This integrated methodology enables the firm to develop bespoke architectural solutions that respond precisely to project-specific parameters while maintaining high standards of technical execution and aesthetic refinement across various scales and typologies. 2024 Previous Next

2025 Previous Next
Znameni Ctyr Architekti | Archicasting
2020 Previous Next
Sakai Architects | Archicasting
2024 Previous Next

This transformative project revitalizes the museum while respecting its architectural legacy. Central to the expansion is a striking 42,000-square-foot wing, appearing to float above the landscape. Its elongated, horizontal form reflects the expansive Nebraskan sky, providing new, light-filled galleries that enhance the museum’s exhibition capabilities and foster a connection between art, architecture, and nature. The redesign extends beyond the building's interior. Snøhetta's renowned approach to public spaces is evident in the reimagined outdoor areas, featuring over three acres of gardens and installations that blur the lines between interior and exterior spaces. A new entry sequence takes visitors through a curated landscape, leading them to the museum's newly designed entrance. The façade of the addition is a modern interpretation of the original 1931 Art Deco structure, utilizing precast panels with pink aggregates that subtly echo the museum’s historic Georgia Pink marble. Inside, a grand atrium links the old and new spaces, with views of the original building’s façade and a gently sloping staircase that leads visitors upwards.
Nestled in a dense Tokyo neighborhood, House in Kokubunji by Yuki Morita Architect & Associates creates a tranquil refuge that reconnects with the streetscape. The architects tackled the challenge of establishing an appropriate "distance" between home and city by carving out a secluded haven before reestablishing a connection. On approach, the entryway denotes leaving the urban realm behind. A lengthy path culminates in the living areas, which reestablish visual links to the surroundings through strategically framed apertures. This layered experience aims to imbue the home with a deeper sense of spatial dimension. The site's restrictive setbacks prompted a gabled roof form, which the architects embraced as a contextual vernacular. However, the interior spatial experience defies typical suburban norms. An expansive double-height volume anchors the plan, with ceiling heights dramatically varying from 1.8m to 3.6m upstairs. The sloping lauan plywood ceilings create visual continuity while delineating the home's private realm. Intricate detailing resonates with the homeowners' vintage furniture collection, fostering an organic relationship between architecture and inhabitation. By choreographing visual connections, path sequencing, and material textures, the architects manifest a tranquil yet dynamic living atmosphere. Founded in 2015, Yuki Morita Architects is an acclaimed Tokyo-based architectural practice led by principal Yuki Morita. This innovative project replaces an existing facility with a design that harmonizes with the local environment, embodying the essence of a "primary landscape." The architects envisioned a structure with a large, sweeping roof that resonates with the scale and color of the surrounding fields, creating a landmark that blends seamlessly into its environment. A long deck stretches beneath the eaves, fostering a fluid connection between the interior and exterior spaces. This design not only enhances visibility and continuity but also encourages interaction among children of varying ages, supported by the adoption of "vertical classes" where children from three to five years old learn and play together. The space beneath the roof is dotted with playful elements like benches and foot baths, inviting exploration and fostering a strong sense of community. By aligning the playroom with functional spaces like the entrance and kitchen, the design maximizes the usability of the space throughout the day, offering a versatile environment for learning, play, and community gathering. This thoughtful integration of architecture and landscape creates a place that is both a beacon of childhood memories and a model for future educational facilities. Project Name: House in Takahata Mountain Location: Tokyo, Japan Architecture Team: HYG ARCHITECTS Total Floor Area: 60.70m² Site Area: 169.43m² Building Area: 63.75m² Completion: September 2022 Construction: Kimura Industry Structural Design: mhr Tomohiro Umehara Structure Type: Wooden Construction Custom Sofa: FUJITAKE WORKS Custom Glass: Shiho Fujiki Landscape Design: Fuwari Photography: Ryo Yahara (Pepp Photograph), HYG ARCHITECTS Feature: Project - HYG ARCHITECTS and Harumi Sakurai have unveiled House in Takahata Mountain, a thoughtfully crafted residence nestled in the hillside suburbs of Hino, Tokyo. This intimate single-story dwelling serves as the architects' own home, masterfully demonstrating how compact living spaces can achieve harmony with their natural surroundings. Located on the southern slopes of the Tama Hills, the 60.7-square-meter home introduces an innovative approach to residential architecture through its distinctive jagged floor plan. The design responds directly to both the site's topography and the architects' passion for outdoor activities, incorporating what they describe as "hiking gear-like lightness" into the architectural composition. The home's most striking feature is its sequence of interconnected spaces that mirror the natural progression of the surrounding landscape. The architects have arranged the dining room, kitchen, living room, and bedroom in a continuous chain, creating a fluid journey through the house that echoes the experience of ascending the nearby mountain ridge. Each room opens onto carefully curated garden spaces, with the building's irregular outline forming intimate outdoor niches that serve as engawa-style verandas and terraces. What sets this project apart is its sophisticated manipulation of natural light. Each room has been precisely engineered to capture different qualities of illumination: dappled morning light filters through trees into the dining area, diffused daylight bathes the living room in soft brightness, and a strategically placed skylight creates dramatic light and shadow play in the bedroom. The living room, in particular, features an innovative curved plaster ceiling that distributes light evenly throughout the space, while reflecting the changing atmospheric conditions throughout the day. Despite its modest footprint, the house achieves remarkable spatial efficiency through multifunctional spaces that seamlessly transition between public and private uses. The minimalist interior palette, anchored by beautiful hinoki plywood, creates a neutral canvas that heightens awareness of the external environment's subtle changes, establishing a living space that truly breathes with its surroundings. Design Team - HYG ARCHITECTS, founded in 2022 in Tokyo, represents a significant collaboration between two distinguished Japanese architects, Kohshi Higaki and Keiichi Yanagihashi. The firm's name embodies their design philosophy of creating architecture that harmoniously integrates with its context while pushing the boundaries of contemporary Japanese design. The practice combines the diverse expertise of its founding partners, who bring extensive experience from their previous roles at prominent Japanese firms. Kohshi Higaki, who previously worked at SALHAUS, contributed to significant public projects including the Rikuzentakata City Takata East Junior High School and the Goishi Coast Camp Information Center. Feature: Project - Nestled in the remote Shodoshima island off western Japan, VUILD has completed The GATE LOUNGE, a multipurpose facility celebrating olive cultivation. The architects proposed a new way of timber construction that maximizes local resources while seamlessly integrating digital fabrication processes. A key focus was harnessing Shodoshima's abundant cypress forests as the primary building material. By setting up a small CNC mill and drying kiln on-site, over 700 locally-felled cypress logs could be precisely machined into the arching structural components. This digital approach replaced the need for skilled carpentry and enabled complex joinery typically reserved for master craftsmen. Beyond material sourcing, the design skillfully harmonizes with the island's climate. The three-winged form encourages natural ventilation by funneling breezes, while layered wall apertures provide ample daylighting. Exterior granite boulder foundations anchor the timber structure, deeply rooting it to Shodoshima's geology. An immersive experience awaits visitors who can observe olive cultivation, production and even sense the island's terroir through architecture intentionally shaped by light and wind. The GATE LOUNGE exemplifies how digital tools can uplift regional construction methods to create place-sensitive, sustainability-minded design. Design Team - Established in 2017, VUILD is a visionary architecture collective dedicated to pushing the boundaries of design through the seamless integration of digital fabrication technologies.
Herzog & de Meuron's Bélair-Monange winery emerges from the renowned vineyards of Saint-Émilion as a sculptural monolith, combining heritage and innovation. The Swiss architects have crafted a harmonious dialogue between an existing 1845 stone house and a striking new concrete volume conceived for modern winemaking needs. With the region's medieval quarries and monolithic churches as inspiration, the concrete monolith is partially buried to respect the historic context while optimizing functions like temperature control. Its ochre hue and textured surface subtly reference the existing stone house, which has been revitalized with recessed infills marking former openings like a palimpsest. A cantilevered roof extends from the old house over the new cellars, tying the ensemble together and offering covered spaces that open onto the vineyards during harvest season. Natural light filters in through vertical slits that subdivide the monumental mass. The interior centerpiece is a textured concrete passageway, whose walls are imprinted with an intricate pattern from a 1504 Albrecht Dürer etching also featured on the estate's wine labels. This unique artistic detail connects the architecture to St-Émilion's vinicultural heritage in an immersive promenade through the wine-making process. With an elegant juxtaposition of old and new, inert mineral masses and delicate lace-like embellishments, Bélair-Monange pays tribute to its remarkable terroir through a refined symbiosis of landscape and contemporary architecture. Founded in 1978 in Basel, Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron has emerged as one of our time's most influential and acclaimed architectural practices.
2024 Previous Next
Bruzkus Greenberg | Archicasting
2025 Previous Next
Project Name: Tsumagoi Villa G-Spiral Location: Tsumagoi Village, Gunma Prefecture , Japan Design Team: Akiyama Tachibana Total Floor Area: 44.71 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Hirokazu Totsuka Feature: Project - Akiyama Tachibana completed a striking philosophical retreat project in the heart of Gunma Prefecture, transforming forgotten bubble-era resort heritage through innovative metaphysical architecture and thoughtful site meditation. The Tsumagoi Villa G-Spiral converts a abandoned resort development into a vibrant contemplative destination, demonstrating the perfect synthesis of traditional Japanese spatial concepts with contemporary philosophical thinking. The villa is strategically positioned on volcanic terrain near Mount Asama, this 44.71-square-meter complex captures the innovative spirit of transcendental architecture while paying homage to the region's geological memory. The project's most distinctive feature lies in its binary spatial system that transforms the original concept of vacation retreat into an enclosed meditation space, creating a new existential order through what the architect describes as a "stage device for crossing between worlds." Akiyama's ingenious design solution unifies two identical spaces with perfect linear symmetry yet radically different functions. The architect employed minimal material palette, chosen for its capacity to record the passage of time and spiritual contemplation. This spatial strategy creates dual realms that mediate between physical existence and metaphysical experience, generating architectural poetry through presence-void dialogue. The villa's programming encompasses two essential spaces: the "void space" featuring carpeted emptiness devoid of function, and the "bath space" descending like a well into contemplative depths. The former workers' dormitory sites have been transformed into sites of introspection, while the charred landscape serves as backdrop for philosophical journey. Segmented yet continuous experiences create natural narrative pauses within the meditation path, allowing each spatial realm to shine within the broader existential narrative. Most notably, the project transforms what was once a bustling bubble-era resort area into a contemplative sanctuary centered around silence and reflection, drawing inspiration from Haruki Murakami's literary explorations of parallel realities. This demonstrates how contemporary retreat architecture can push the boundaries of spiritual renewal possibilities while respecting historical memory and geological context. Design Team - Founded in 2008 by principal Rei Akiyama in Yokohama, Japan, Akiyama Tachibana has established itself as a pioneering force in contemporary Japanese socially-conscious architectural practice, consistently bridging rigorous design methodology with social innovation technologies. With headquarters in Yokohama and secondary base in Kyoto, the firm has established itself as a comprehensive interdisciplinary consultancy providing professional design services across diverse building typologies throughout Japan and broader social initiatives. Rei Akiyama, a graduate of Tokyo Metropolitan University (Bachelor of Architecture in Engineering) and licensed first-class architect, leads the practice with a philosophy of creating new choices for society and individual lives through architectural intervention. The Akiyama Tachibana name reflects the foundational philosophy of honoring ancestral heritage while creating innovative futures------a principle that manifests throughout their comprehensive project methodology combining paternal Akiyama lineage with maternal Tachibana heritage. The firm's design philosophy centers on thorough investigation of architecture as social catalyst, with particular emphasis on addressing contemporary societal challenges through spatial innovation. This approach synthesizes professional architectural expertise with social responsibility, yielding significant works from philosophical retreats to social housing projects that demonstrate continuous advancement of socially-responsive architecture that breaks through in both cultural heritage and modern functionality. Akiyama's mastery of metaphysical architectural language and spatial philosophy methodologies, along with applications of advanced social intervention techniques, underscores their contribution to Japan's evolving socially-conscious architectural discourse. Their recent work on the Tsumagoi Villa G-Spiral project exemplifies their persistent pursuit of pushing design boundaries while exploring existential questions------positioning them as thought leaders in contemporary cross-disciplinary architectural practice. Akiyama Tachibana maintains headquarters in Yokohama with additional base in Kyoto, supported by a vibrant interdisciplinary team composed of architects, social workers, and academics contributing to the firm's continuously evolving social architectural discourse. Rei Akiyama simultaneously serves as adjunct lecturer at multiple universities including Yokohama National University, Tokyo Metropolitan University, and Toyo University, while serving as Representative Director of the National Single Parent Housing Support Organization, establishing Akiyama Tachibana as an important contributor to contemporary socially-responsible architectural creation in Japan and beyond. 2024 Previous Next

The clients envisioned a contemporary chalet harmoniously integrated within its forested environs yet leaving a minimal ecological footprint. From the approach, refined volumes clad in cedar rise gracefully, punctuated by expansive south-facing windows that bathe the interior in warm natural light. The suspended main level containsliving spaces that open completely to framed vistas of the St. Lawrence River, while strategically screened openings on the side offer a sheltered vantage point to immerse in the sights and sounds of the mountainous setting. A grounded concrete monolith housing the entrance separates from the primary volume, its mass symbolically rooting the airy residence. Upstairs, the centralized stairwell and corridor form a transitional threshold between the communal areas and private bedrooms, visually connecting front and rear viewsheds. Prioritizing efficient construction and sustainable strategies, the architects employed highly insulated double-framed walls, meticulously bridged insulation, and an energy-efficient HVAC system. With restrained spaces and untreated materials, Chez Léon evokes nostalgic treehouse whimsy reinterpreted through an environmentally conscious contemporary lens. Through strategic architectural and interior design choices guided by principles of sustainability and naturalization, the townhouse transcends its spatial constraints to deliver an airy oasis of light and green within the urban context. From the outset, the house works to fuse interior with exterior through expansive frameless glass boundary walls and skylight-enhanced stairwells. The floods of natural light serve the dual purposes of creating an artistic, ever-changing interplay of illumination while reducing reliance on artificial lighting. Further greening the interiors, bedroom and bathroom areas are adorned with living walls, enhancing air quality and forming refreshing living tapestries. Ingenious solutions equally address the greenhouse effect of glass structures within the tropical climate. Multi-layered glass walls with integrated air gaps allow hot internal air to freely circulate outward while inviting cooling breezes inward. Strategically-placed trees and a surrounding ground floor pool offer additional passive cooling effects. The harmonization of interior and exterior spaces continues stylistically with a warm, minimalist material palette and strategic use of reflective surfaces visually expanding the internal spaces. Flexibly-designed areas promote multifunctional usage of the rooms over the building’s three levels, connected through open voids offering panoramic views. Ultimately, the SkyGarden House offers a blueprint for building ecologically and spatially conscious urban dwellings in the context of land-scarce tropical environments, where virtuoso design overcomes limitations to transport inhabitants into an oasis of interconnected indoor-outdoor living. 2024 Previous Next

Project Name: LAI House Location: Mexico City, Mexico Design Team: BROISSIN Total Floor Area: 923 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Alexandre D La Roche Feature: BROISSIN Architects has unveiled the groundbreaking LAI House in the Lomas de Vista Hermosa neighborhood of Mexico City, a transformative project that challenges traditional residential architecture typology through innovative stepped volumetry and topographical integration approaches. Located on a steeply sloped 678.85 m² site, this residential facility represents a bold reimagining of architectural adaptation to natural terrain. The building's most distinctive feature lies in its ingenious integration of traditional spatial progression with contemporary design concepts, seamlessly transforming challenging topography into contemporary living space that embodies the spirit of "biophilic architecture." This design strategy directly responds to the site's inherent gradient context—through a unified design language that simultaneously respects natural landscape heritage and meets modern residential requirements, challenging conventional residential architectural conventions. Under the leadership of architect Mauricio Cristóbal, this project exemplifies the firm's commitment to reinterpreting residential architectural typology, a typology that carries profound environmental significance and sustainable traditions. The house transcends the limitations of typical residential architecture, integrating living and landscape functions within a unified programmatic framework, creating spaces that serve resident needs while promoting environmental harmony. The interior design creates ethereal spatial effects through materials crafted using refined palette techniques, these elements appear to flow naturally throughout each floor, both echoing natural craftsmanship and embodying contemporary spatial aesthetics—elements that are core to both sustainable design identity and environmental cultural heritage. This design approach reinforces the building's role as a bridge connecting built environment and natural landscape, interior and exterior spaces. The completed 923-square-meter residence marks a pivotal moment in residential architecture evolution, while establishing new benchmarks for Mexican contemporary building design and environmental integration. The project demonstrates how design can create bold forward-thinking environments while respecting topographical context, inspiring the fusion of architectural heritage and innovation. This architectural achievement positions LAI House as a catalyst for future residential development, proving that contemporary homes can be both functionally sophisticated and environmentally captivating.
