Project Name: FENIX ART MUSEUM Location: Rotterdam, Netherlands Design Team: MAD Architects Total Floor Area: 8000 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Iwan Baan, Titia Hahne, Iris van den Broek Design Features: Project - MAD Architects transformed a historic 16,000-square-meter shipping warehouse in Rotterdam's port district into the FENIX Art Museum, a major new cultural institution exploring migration through the lens of art. Completed in 2025, this project marks MAD Architects' first public cultural building in Europe and represents the first museum built by a Chinese architecture firm in Europe. The design of FENIX Art Museum began with a clear concept: creating a cultural space that connects past and future while respecting industrial heritage. Rather than completely rebuilding the century-old warehouse, the architects implemented careful restoration and contemporary interventions, preserving the building's historic character including restoring the 172-meter-long façade to its 1950s post-war appearance and refurbishing the characteristic sliding doors in their original green color. The core highlight of the project is the centrally positioned "Tornado"—a double-helix staircase clad in 297 polished stainless steel panels that spirals from the ground floor through the roof to an outdoor viewing platform 24 meters above ground level. This dynamic structure not only provides spectacular panoramic views of Rotterdam and the Maas River but also serves as the visual and spiritual core of the entire museum. Inside the Tornado is a 550-meter-long double-helix wooden staircase made from sustainable Norwegian Kebony modified wood. In terms of material selection, the architects deliberately preserved the warehouse's original concrete columns and open spaces, creating flexible exhibition areas across two floors. The ground floor contains exhibition and programming spaces, while the upper galleries are dedicated to the FENIX Collection. A glass roof above the central atrium provides natural light for the Tornado while illuminating the entrance lobby below. Regarding sustainable design, the building features a 6,750-square-meter green roof planted with sedum arranged in concentric patterns echoing the Tornado's form. The building employs a Thermal Energy System (TES) that stores excess heat in the soil and uses a heat pump to generate appropriate indoor temperatures, saving up to 60% in heating energy and 80% in cooling energy. By combining historic preservation, contemporary intervention, and sustainable technology, MAD Architects has created a cultural destination that transcends traditional museum concepts, authentically expressing FENIX Museum's mission to explore human migration history through art while injecting new vitality into Rotterdam's port district. Design Team - MAD Architects was established in 2004 by Ma Yansong and is currently led by Ma Yansong, Dang Qun, and Yosuke Hayano. The firm is committed to developing futuristic, organic, technologically advanced designs that embody a contemporary interpretation of the Eastern affinity for nature. Representative works include Ordos Museum (2011), Harbin Opera House (2015), Tunnel of Light (2018, Japan), and Cloudscape of Haikou (2021), with Harbin Opera House being recognized as one of "The World's Best Concert Halls" by Telegraph and winning the ArchDaily Building of the Year Award in the Culture Architecture category. Under the continued leadership of Ma Yansong, Dang Qun, and Yosuke Hayano, MAD has gained international recognition, including multiple A+ Awards, WAN Awards, and Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) awards. Ma Yansong graduated from Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture and Yale School of Architecture; Dang Qun graduated from Tsinghua University School of Architecture and Illinois Institute of Technology; Yosuke Hayano graduated from Kyoto Institute of Technology and Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, their international backgrounds bringing diverse perspectives to the firm. MAD's design methodology emphasizes a vision for future cities based on residents' spiritual and emotional needs, striving to create balance between humanity, the city, and the environment. They view architecture as a bridge connecting tradition and modernity, East and West, a philosophy fully demonstrated in the FENIX Art Museum project. 2025 Previous Next

Project Name: Saint-Jean-de-Luz Cultural Center Location: France Design Team: Dominique Coulon & associés Total Floor Area: 3250 m² Completion: 2023 Photography: Eugeni Pons Feature: Project - Dominique Coulon & associés has completed their latest project - Saint-Jean-de-Luz Cultural Center, reinterpreting the concept of cultural architecture through a fragmentary yet harmonious design approach. This 3250-square-meter structure, located just 500 meters from the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, responds to its complex coastal context through a deliberate decomposition of form. The project's most distinctive feature is its triple-height atrium that serves as the conceptual and circulatory nucleus of the complex. Rather than conceiving the structure as a monolithic entity, the architects have choreographed a series of distinct volumes that house the center's diverse programming. This fragmentation allows for a nuanced play of scale and proportion, creating a dynamic yet balanced composition that connects the eastern theater wing with the western three-tiered volume containing music, theater, and dance spaces. The spatial layout is carefully orchestrated, with the central void functioning as more than mere circulation; it emerges as the "beating heart" of the complex, fostering social connectivity and shared experience. Generous glazing throughout this space floods the interior with natural light while offering strategic glimpses into adjacent programmatic areas, creating a visual transparency that invites exploration and interaction. The project's uniqueness lies in its relationship to the surrounding garden, with carefully positioned openings framing views of the landscaped exterior. This garden isn't merely decorative but functional, featuring an intimate open-air theater and outdoor extensions of collective practice rooms that blur the boundary between interior and exterior performance spaces. Despite its programmatic complexity, the building achieves remarkable spatial efficiency through its compact organization. Circulation is fluid and intuitive, with short, light-filled corridors connecting the various functions. The overall effect is one of poetic pragmatism - a building that satisfies its functional requirements while maintaining a sense of wonder and discovery. Design Team - Founded in 1989 when Dominique Coulon established his practice in Strasbourg after completing his architectural education, Dominique Coulon & associés has evolved into one of France's most distinguished architectural studios. The firm, which formally adopted its current name in 2008, is led by Dominique Coulon and his associate Steve Letho Duclos, who approach each project through a reflective and philosophical lens. The practice specializes in public architecture, with a diversified portfolio encompassing libraries, healthcare facilities, theaters, aquatic centers, educational institutions, and housing developments. Their work is characterized by dynamically imbricated elements and thoughtful manipulation of natural light, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of spatial complexity and contextual design. Refusing to be limited by pre-established methods, the studio explores different ways of approaching projects to rethink spaces and uses. This methodology enables the firm to synthesize heterogeneous programmatic requirements into cohesive architectural solutions that respond sensitively to their contexts, considering complexity as an approach that gives the architect freedom to deal with the heterogeneity of the project's data. The practice's commitment to architectural excellence has been acknowledged with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Golden Medal from the French Academy of Architecture in 2022, nomination for the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award in 2019, and multiple Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Awards. Dominique Coulon's theoretical perspectives inform both his professional work and his academic activities at the School of Architecture in Strasbourg, where he founded the master's program in 'Architecture and Complexity.' 2023 Previous Next
PL.Architekci | Archicasting
2024 Previous Next
Unknown Surface Studio | Archicasting
Project Name: Curvy Dining Location: Bangkok, Thailand Design Team: Unknown Surface Studio Project Area: 250 m² Completion Date: 2025 (Expected) Photography: Rungkit Charoenwat Feature: Project - In a striking departure from Bangkok's industrial vernacular, Curvy Dining emerges as a sculptural masterpiece that challenges conventional restaurant design. Conceived by Unknown Surface Studio, this 250-square-metre dining destination stands as a testament to organic architecture, where fluid forms and natural inspiration coalesce into a remarkable spatial experience. Set against the raw industrial backdrop of Srinakarin - Rom Klao 19, the project's most compelling feature is its innovative interpretation of floral architecture. The design team, led by Cievanard Nattabowonphal, Piyanat Songkhorh, and Nonglak Boonsaeng, has masterfully translated the geometry of blooming flowers into a sophisticated architectural language. The result is a structure that appears to unfold from a central point, creating a mesmerizing interplay of curves and radial patterns. What sets Curvy Dining apart is its thoughtful negotiation between geometric precision and organic fluidity. The exterior's squared framework provides a deliberate contrast to the flowing interior spaces, while the subtractive design approach carves out intuitive circulation paths that guide visitors through a carefully choreographed sequence of spaces. This architectural promenade is enhanced by integrated green pockets that blur the boundaries between built form and landscape. The project's white materiality serves as a canvas for natural light and shadow play, creating an ever-changing visual experience throughout the day. The studio's commitment to environmental dialogue is evident in the way the building responds to its context – rather than imposing itself on the site, it appears to emerge from it, creating what the architects describe as an "auto-landscape effect." Scheduled for completion in 2025, Curvy Dining represents a bold vision for hospitality architecture, where the rigid boundaries between interior and exterior dissolve, and where architectural form becomes a medium for expressing natural phenomena. It stands as a powerful example of how contemporary architecture can create meaningful connections between urban dining experiences and organic design principles. Design Team - Unknown Surface Studio, established in 2020, is an innovative architectural practice that has rapidly emerged as a significant force in contemporary design, particularly within the Asia-Pacific region. Founded by the visionary trio of Cievanard Nattabowonphal, Piyanat Songkhroh, and Nonglak Boonsaeng, the firm has distinguished itself through its parametric design approach and biomorphic architectural language. The practice's design philosophy is deeply rooted in the synthesis of computational design methodologies and organic form-making, informed by the founders' diverse international experience, including tenures at prestigious firms such as MAD Architects. Their work is characterized by fluid geometries, innovative spatial configurations, and a sophisticated understanding of environmental context. Under the leadership of its founding partners, Unknown Surface Studio has developed a distinctive portfolio that emphasizes the integration of advanced digital fabrication techniques with sustainable design principles. Their projects, ranging from hospitality venues to public installations, showcase a commitment to pushing the boundaries of conventional architectural expression. The studio's approach to design is marked by their signature "unknown yet" methodology, which challenges traditional architectural paradigms through experimental form-finding processes and parametric optimization. This innovative stance has garnered attention for projects like Uncloud Coffee & Dining and Curvy Dining, which exemplify their ability to create spaces that are both functionally sophisticated and aesthetically progressive. With offices in Bangkok, the firm continues to expand its influence across Southeast Asia, bringing their unique blend of computational design expertise and organic architectural expression to increasingly ambitious projects. 2025 Previous Next

In a stunning revival of West Coast modernism, the reDEW House in West Vancouver stands as a testament to thoughtful architectural renovation. This 5,900 sq ft beachfront residence, originally designed by Daniel Evan White in 1969, has been meticulously reimagined to honor its roots while embracing contemporary living. The project's most striking feature is its return to architectural authenticity, stripping away years of misguided renovations to reveal the home's true character. The exposed heavy timber post and beam framing now takes center stage, creating a rhythmic dialogue between structure and space that spans the entire length of the house. A masterful interplay of old and new defines the design. The introduction of a suspended steel staircase serves as a lightweight counterpoint to the robust timber framework, delicately hovering over the main entry and dining area. This juxtaposition of materials and forms exemplifies the project's commitment to harmonizing original elements with modern interventions. The renovation prioritizes the site's ocean views, with carefully positioned living spaces that transition from intimate north-facing rooms to expansive south-facing areas. Large sliding doors blur the boundary between interior and exterior, extending the living space onto a generous patio, deck, and pool area. The upper floor showcases a luxurious primary suite where every element, from the custom-designed bed to the strategically placed bathtub and shower, is oriented to capture breathtaking water vistas. This thoughtful approach to spatial planning ensures that the home's privileged location is fully appreciated from every vantage point.
Project Name: Fuku Auberge Location: Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, Japan Design Team: Kengo Kuma & Associates Total Floor Area: 198.95 m² Completion: March 2025 Photography: Keishin Horikoshi/SS Feature: Kengo Kuma & Associates has unveiled the remarkable Fuku Auberge in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, a transformative project that challenges traditional minka renovation typology through innovative restoration approaches. Located in the heart of Hizen-Hamashuku, a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, this restaurant and accommodation complex for sake brewery Fukuchiyo represents a bold reimagining of historic architecture regeneration. The building's most distinctive feature lies in its ingenious integration of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design concepts, seamlessly transforming the century-old minka into a contemporary space that embodies the spirit of "Nabeshima" sake. This design strategy directly responds to the site's inherent historical context—through a unified design language that simultaneously respects traditional architectural heritage and meets modern functional requirements, challenging conventional ryokan architectural conventions. Under the leadership of architect Kengo Kuma, this project exemplifies the firm's commitment to reinterpreting Japanese traditional architectural typology, a typology that carries profound cultural significance and craft traditions. The auberge transcends the limitations of typical accommodation architecture, integrating dining and lodging functions within a unified programmatic framework, creating spaces that serve client needs while promoting cultural experiences. The interior design creates ethereal visual effects through lighting fixtures crafted using traditional kumiko techniques, these luminaires appear to float randomly throughout each floor, both echoing traditional craftsmanship and embodying contemporary spatial aesthetics—elements that are core to both Nabeshima brand identity and Japanese cultural heritage. This design approach reinforces the building's role as a bridge connecting past and present, tradition and modernity. The completed 198.95-square-meter auberge marks a pivotal moment in traditional architecture regeneration, while establishing new benchmarks for Japanese historic building preservation and adaptive reuse. The project demonstrates how design can create bold forward-thinking environments while respecting historical context, inspiring the fusion of cultural heritage and innovation. This architectural achievement positions Fuku Auberge as a catalyst for future cultural tourism development, proving that historic buildings can be both functionally sophisticated and aesthetically captivating. Design Team - Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKAA) stands as a distinguished international architectural practice founded by Kengo Kuma in 1990, based in Tokyo, under the creative direction of the founder, the firm has developed a reputation for pioneering multidisciplinary practice that transcends conventional architectural boundaries. Under the leadership of the founding partner, the practice has cultivated a distinctive design methodology that seamlessly integrates conceptual rigor with spatial innovation. Their portfolio encompasses numerous landmark projects, including various cultural institutions, hospitality projects, and residential developments among internationally acclaimed architectural works. The firm's experimental approach to architectural design has been exemplified through numerous award-winning projects that have received prestigious international architectural awards. The firm's design philosophy emphasizes that materiality, environmental integration, and cultural sensitivity are equally important, not rushing to standardized architectural solutions but believing that architecture should be a result of thorough understanding of spatial conditions, cultural contexts, and programmatic requirements. Through in-depth dialogue with clients, they formulate the core elements of the project then offer their expertise to transform creative concepts into architectural reality. Kengo Kuma & Associates believes that exceptional design comes from collaboration with specialized consultants and craftsmen, they love to challenge themselves and push the design boundary further, with innovation being the key to maintaining their practice vitality. Through this thoughtful synthesis of contemporary architectural language, understanding of traditional spatial logic, and avant-garde design approaches, Kengo Kuma & Associates has established itself as a significant contributor to international contemporary architectural discourse, creating architectural works that are both rooted in local culture and embrace global design vision. Their work has been recognized with numerous international awards, demonstrating their ability to transform bold conceptual ideas into tangible architectural achievements. 2025 Previous Next
Project Name: Roxborough House Location: Toronto, Canada Design Team: gh3 * Total Floor Area: 2,690 ft² Completion: 2022 Photography: Raymond Chow Feature: Project - Situated in Toronto's South Rosedale heritage conservation district, gh3* architects have masterfully transformed an Edwardian home from the 1920s into a contemporary dwelling that bridges historical preservation with minimalist design sensibilities. The Roxborough House renovation navigates the complex challenge of respecting stringent heritage restrictions while fulfilling the client's desire for modernization. The project's most distinctive feature is its thoughtful rear intervention, where two new brick-clad structures—a two-story addition and a multipurpose garage—create an intimate courtyard garden. The architects employed hand-molded brick for these elements, maintaining visual harmony with the neighborhood's original masonry facades. In a sustainable gesture, reclaimed joists from the existing house were repurposed for the garage construction, establishing a material dialogue between old and new. Inside, gh3* has reimagined the spatial flow without altering the original program. The ground floor's reorganization revolves around a continuous hallway along the western wall, which incorporates original leaded windows now liberated from their previous contexts to create an abstract composition. These varied openings produce a rhythmic play of daylight throughout the day, animating the interior spaces. The renovation elevates the minimalist aesthetic through elemental forms—a soapstone kitchen island, an arched ante-room pantry, and a deeply vaulted hallway leading to the principal bedroom. These simple yet powerful geometric interventions unify space and function while creating visual intrigue. Particularly noteworthy is the rear addition's new family entrance, sheltered by a vaulted structure with strategically placed skylights and windows that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. This thoughtful connection to the courtyard garden reinforces the project's holistic approach to architecture and landscape. The Roxborough House exemplifies gh3*'s signature design philosophy of abstraction and distillation, creating spaces of material continuity, precise proportions, and carefully calibrated light—all while maintaining a profound respect for Toronto's architectural heritage. Design Team - Founded in 2006, gh3* has established itself as one of Canada's most innovative architectural design practices, earning peer recognition and numerous prestigious awards for its distinctive approach to the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and landscape. Led by Founding Principal and Creative Director Pat Hanson (BFA, MArch, OAA, AAA, FRAIC), the firm has cultivated a reputation for design integrity across diverse typologies and scales. The practice's interdisciplinary team, including key leaders Raymond Chow, Elise Shelley, and Joel Di Giacomo, approaches each project with a modernist sensibility toward order and social possibility, while maintaining a strong environmental consciousness. This methodology has resulted in an impressive portfolio spanning intimate residential projects to complex civic infrastructure. gh3*'s work has garnered international acclaim, including multiple Governor General's Medals for projects such as the Stormwater Facility, Borden Park Natural Swimming Pool, and the Photographers Studio over a Boathouse. The firm's pioneering work in urban water infrastructure earned it recognition as one of the World's Twenty Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company in 2020. The studio's design philosophy emphasizes the creation of meaningful connections between architecture and landscape within urban contexts. Their projects demonstrate a commitment to transcending purely functional requirements, instead integrating pragmatic needs with poetic expression to create aesthetically impactful environments that enhance everyday experiences. Through their client-centered approach and environmental responsibility, gh3* continues to produce spatially engaging places that inspire civic pride while advancing the discourse on sustainable design practices in contemporary architecture. 2022 Previous Next
Feature: Project - Unveiled as a concept in 2016, this 1km-long art museum hovering over a lake in Rizhao, China manifests architect Junya Ishigami's poetic vision for a building that blurs the boundaries between architecture and nature. Aspiring to create a more equal relationship between construction and the vast environment of China, Ishigami stretches the narrow footprint across the entire expansive lake, enabling the structure to "gently touch the water surface." Rejecting isolated, defensive architecture, the design embraces the surroundings, pulling them inside. The museum's glass-infused colonnade sinks into the lake while the rippling roof floats above like a ribbon. The spectator moves through a dreamlike landscape, with glass openings framing views and letting in breezes. Sections morph from broad floors for exhibits to narrow landstrips bounded by water. This sensuous interplay between water and sky, light and surface aims to conjure a novel sense of nature within the building - a "friendly new natural environment." Ishigami seeks to uplift the human spirit by dissolving old dichotomies. The long, low curves respond to the languid topography, a counterpoint to the alienation of contemporary Chinese buildings. Alighting gently on the water without disrupting the horizon, the museum integrates harmoniously into the terrain. Design Team - Founded in Tokyo in 2004 by Junya Ishigami, junya.ishigami+associates has emerged as one of the most innovative and visionary architectural firms in Japan. Ishigami gained international acclaim following the completion of the Kanagawa Institute of Technology's KAIT Workshop in 2007, winning the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize in 2009. Further success followed, including the Golden Lion at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale. Ishigami's experimental and nature-inspired approach dissolves boundaries between architecture, landscape, and environment. Projects range from conceptual installations to buildings that integrate seamlessly with their surroundings, guided by a drive to expand possibilities. With a focus on tranquility, simplicity and transparency, Ishigami envisions an architecture where life unfolds according to organic principles. Major projects include the House of Peace in Copenhagen (2014), the Church in the Valley in China (2016), and the Serpentine Pavilion in London (2019). The firm's boundary-pushing explorations make it a worthy recipient of the prestigious Austrian Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts in 2023. Previous Next

Herzog & de Meuron's Bélair-Monange winery emerges from the renowned vineyards of Saint-Émilion as a sculptural monolith, combining heritage and innovation. The Swiss architects have crafted a harmonious dialogue between an existing 1845 stone house and a striking new concrete volume conceived for modern winemaking needs. With the region's medieval quarries and monolithic churches as inspiration, the concrete monolith is partially buried to respect the historic context while optimizing functions like temperature control. Its ochre hue and textured surface subtly reference the existing stone house, which has been revitalized with recessed infills marking former openings like a palimpsest. A cantilevered roof extends from the old house over the new cellars, tying the ensemble together and offering covered spaces that open onto the vineyards during harvest season. Natural light filters in through vertical slits that subdivide the monumental mass. The interior centerpiece is a textured concrete passageway, whose walls are imprinted with an intricate pattern from a 1504 Albrecht Dürer etching also featured on the estate's wine labels. This unique artistic detail connects the architecture to St-Émilion's vinicultural heritage in an immersive promenade through the wine-making process. With an elegant juxtaposition of old and new, inert mineral masses and delicate lace-like embellishments, Bélair-Monange pays tribute to its remarkable terroir through a refined symbiosis of landscape and contemporary architecture. Founded in 1978 in Basel, Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron has emerged as one of our time's most influential and acclaimed architectural practices. Flow House Dubbeldam Architecture + Design | Archicasting
Project:Flow House Team:Dubbeldam Architecture + Design Size:2500 ft² Location:Toronto, Canada Feature: Project - Dubbeldam Architecture + Design has transformed a narrow Victorian house in Toronto into a light-filled, sculptural home that defies its compact footprint. The Flow House, a 130-year-old semi-detached property, has been reimagined for a creative couple and their children, blending Scandinavian and Mediterranean influences with a focus on tactility and craftsmanship. The architects employed a clever strategy of compression and expansion throughout the 2,500-square-foot space, creating a sense of openness despite the home's modest 5-meter width. Interstitial areas are deliberately narrowed, leading to expansive, lofty spaces that surprise and delight. A standout feature is the helical staircase connecting all four floors, its winding balustrade and natural oak treads casting dynamic shadows beneath a generous skylight. This focal point embodies the project's fluid aesthetic, which contrasts with the rectilinear floorplan through organic, sculpted elements. The interior showcases a thoughtful material palette, including warm white oak, Carrara marble, and hand-molded clay pendants. Pops of color animate transitional spaces, while arched openings frame views between rooms, enhancing the home's sculptural sensibility. Large windows and sliding glass doors blur the boundaries between inside and out, with a stepped rear façade creating a roof deck and sheltered entrance. The result is a harmonious blend of old and new, where Victorian charm meets contemporary living in a uniquely flowing design. Design Team - Founded in 2002 by Heather Dubbeldam, FRAIC, OAA, LEED AP, WELL AP, Dubbeldam Architecture + Design has established itself as a vanguard of sustainable and innovative design in Canada. - Perchée住宅 Matière Première Architecture | Archicasting
2026 Previous Next

MORE Architecture | Archicasting
Nestled on a ginkgo tree-covered island in Jiaxing, China, the Ginkgo Gallery by MORE Architecture presents a refreshing counterpoint to China's recent "museum boom." This innovative cultural space eschews the trend of massive, iconic museums in favor of a more intimate and immersive experience that seamlessly blends art with nature. The gallery's design draws inspiration from the DNA of local Zhejiang villages, reimagining the museum typology as a small town to be explored. By merging the guided museum concept with a free-flow plan, MORE Architecture has created a fluid spatial experience that allows visitors to craft their own journey through interconnected yet distinct exhibition halls. At a modest 2,500 square meters, the Ginkgo Gallery stands out for its understated materiality. The entire structure is crafted from in-situ cast concrete, with rough wooden plank formwork creating a textured rhythm across facades, walls, and ceilings. This minimalist approach reduces construction waste and emphasizes the museum's spatial qualities. The gallery's relationship with its surroundings is paramount, orienting itself towards the water and landscape to forge a deep connection between culture and art. With additional spaces for education and engagement, including an auditorium, reading room, and workshop, the Ginkgo Gallery aims to make contemporary art an integral part of public life, particularly for children. Based in Amsterdam and Shanghai, MORE Architecture is a research-driven design practice founded in 2013 by Dutch architect Daan Roggeveen and Chinese-American architect Robert Chen. Project Name: Stones Water Light Visitor Center Location: Edersee, Germany Design Team: Christoph Hesse Architects Total Floor Area: 1,500 m² Completion: 2021-2023 Photography: Laurian Ghinitoiu, Michael Meschede Feature: Project - Christoph Hesse Architects has completed their latest project - Stones Water Light Visitor Center at Lake Edersee, reinterpreting the concept of perspective-changing cultural space through contemporary design approaches. This 1,500-square-meter structure serves both as a visitor center and a thoughtfully crafted venue for exploring regenerative thinking and action. The project's most distinctive feature is its innovative treatment of the Edersee dam concept. The design team transformed this symbolic structure into a spatial protagonist through a conceptual "section cut" through the dam, revealing imagined internal spaces of tunnels and shafts. This architectural metaphor not only connects the central square of the village of Edersee with the dam itself but also reinforces the water infrastructure's central role in local identity and history. The spatial layout is carefully orchestrated, encompassing a multi-layered visitor experience. The ground floor and outdoor areas serve as community spaces, fostering gathering, education, and cultural exchange. Visitors are guided through an open and seamlessly connected spatial experience, leading to an information and lounge area before descending to the museum space, where an immersive light installation brings the dam's vivid history to life. The walkable rooftop further enhances the experience, offering different viewpoints that showcase both the dam and the surrounding natural landscape. The project's uniqueness lies in its reconsideration of cultural facility design. Through materiality of brick and wood that respects the surrounding landscape while establishing a contemporary presence, the design team transformed the space into a place for reflection, learning, and connection. This project represents a significant achievement in cultural design, transforming architecture into a medium for creating moments of contemplation and engagement in Germany's rural landscape. This is not merely a visitor center but a vivid lesson in how thoughtful design can transform historical sites into meaningful environments that nurture contemporary communities, setting a new standard for cultural buildings at the threshold of the UNESCO-listed Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. Design Team - Founded in 2010, Christoph Hesse Architects has established itself as one of Germany's most innovative architectural practices, renowned for creating spaces that inspire self-efficacy, collaboration, and deep connections to nature. With offices in the historic town of Korbach and the contemporary creative hub of Berlin, the studio has gained international recognition for its design philosophy that combines deeply rooted local identity with a forward-thinking vision. The practice specializes in cultural and ecological projects across both rural and urban contexts, fostering a dialogue that bridges these two realms and their unique challenges and opportunities. Their work is defined by two categories: Perspective Changers and System Changers. "Perspective Changers" projects address global challenges through localized interventions that spark reflection and action, while "System Changers" focus on using architecture as a catalyst for systemic change. Under the leadership of Christoph Hesse, the firm has received numerous awards for its innovative approach, including the Design Vanguard Award, European 40 under 40 Award, and multiple Architizer A+ Awards.
