Design Features: Linden House stands within Dromgarriff Rainforest in Glengarriff, County Cork, Ireland, and was renewed by Schemata Architects. The estate contains one of Ireland's remaining ancient oakwood rainforests and forms part of a protected Special Area of Conservation. Stone steps, terraces, walls and garden traces still recall Roche's Royal Hotel, which once occupied the site. At 571.14 m², Linden is the first of five guesthouses to be completed and the opening architectural move in the wider regeneration of the forest.

The existing house comprised two buildings linked by an entrance passage. Schemata enlarged this narrow connection into a generous shared room for gathering, yoga and collective use, while renovating the interiors on both sides. The addition does not compete with the woodland as a dominant object. It settles into the inlet between the wings, allowing views from the rooms to pass toward water and trees while the architecture recedes toward the edges of perception.

A sawtooth roof defines the new central room. Photovoltaic panels occupy the south-facing slopes, while high openings to the north draw stable, gentle daylight into the interior. By day, northern light moves across the oak frame and floor as the opposite roof plane gathers energy; after dark, that energy supports the building's illumination. Daylight, power generation and spatial form are therefore held within the same sectional idea rather than treated as separate technical layers.

Oak is used extensively across the shared room, from floors and beams to window frames and fitted elements, set against retained stone walls. As one of the species that shapes the surrounding woodland, it carries the forest indoors through colour, touch and structural scale without reducing nature to decoration. The rooms in the existing wings retain their pitched roofs and more intimate proportions, while generous windows frame the inlet, canopy and changeable Irish weather from living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms.

The project links the building's energy cycle to the economy required to care for the forest. Dromgarriff needs continuing human attention, and the five guesthouses and future retreat programme are intended to generate income for the restoration of its gardens and woodland. Linden, in turn, relies on daylight and solar power to reduce dependence on imported energy. Regeneration is treated as an ongoing system of staying, maintenance and use, so that each night spent in the house contributes to the longer life of the landscape around it.

Design Team: Schemata Architects was founded by Jo Nagasaka in 1998 and is based in Kita-sando, Tokyo. Nagasaka established the practice immediately after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts. Its work ranges from furniture and interiors to architecture and urban landscapes, spanning houses, cafes, shops, hotels, public baths and cultural spaces.

The studio searches for overlooked value in everyday things and existing environments. Ideas such as subtraction, misuse, renewed knowledge, invisible development and half-architecture describe an approach that rarely replaces a site with a complete new image. Instead, Schemata retains traces of material, structure and occupation, then reorganises their relationships through direct, full-scale experimentation.

Linden House was led by Jo Nagasaka with project architect Rikako Sho and built by DHC Construction. The practice's method is visible in the measured treatment of existing stone, timber and the woodland edge. The central room resolves shared use and energy strategy while setting a model for the estate's wider renewal.
