Design Features: Fragmentos has completed Sublime Comporta Sand in Grândola, Portugal, a hotel project set within cork oak and umbrella pine forest in Comporta. Occupying a 51-hectare natural site, the project marks the next chapter of Sublime Comporta, one of Portugal’s most recognisable hospitality destinations. Rather than functioning as a simple extension, it establishes a new layer of resort experience through a more complete spatial organisation and a clearer relationship with the landscape.

The project builds on the atmosphere originally shaped with architect José Charrua and reinterprets it through a more unified architectural and operational system. Sublime Comporta Sand belongs to the wider estate, yet it also forms a self-contained setting with its own accommodation, reception, event and wellness facilities. In this sense, it reads less as an addition at the edge of an existing hotel and more as a new chapter within the same hospitality narrative.

Across the site, 43 villas are dispersed among the trees and supported by a series of shared buildings that structure the rhythm of the guest experience. The Atrium sits at the centre as a social core where reception, restaurant and everyday life converge. The Forum introduces a larger scale for events, gatherings and special programmes, while Aqua, the wellness centre, opens more quietly toward the landscape and anchors the contemplative side of the hotel.

Here, landscape is not treated as a background added after the architecture, but as the starting point of the design. The architects began with a detailed reading of the existing cork oaks and umbrella pines, allowing the position of trees, clearings and subtle changes in topography to guide the placement of buildings and paths. Circulation routes do not pursue straight-line efficiency. Instead, they bend around trunks and pass through openings in the forest, turning arrival itself into part of the resort experience.

The architectural language is rooted in the idea of the contemporary cabin and in a restrained reading of Comporta’s local fishermen’s houses. Simple volumes, timber construction and sandy, earth-toned materials soften the presence of the buildings, allowing them to recede into the landscape rather than dominate it. Although the villas follow a repeated typology, each one is experienced differently because it responds to a particular clearing, tree, orientation or shift in the ground.

From a travel perspective, Sublime Comporta Sand is best understood as a slow-arrival destination. Visitors can read the project not only through the rooms, but also through the approach paths, the public life of the Atrium, the event scale of the Forum, the quiet atmosphere of Aqua and the carefully measured distance between each villa and the surrounding trees. Morning and evening light give the timber, sandy surfaces and pine shadows a softer depth, revealing the calm, retreat-like quality the project sets out to create.

Ultimately, the value of Sublime Comporta Sand lies not in a forceful architectural gesture, but in the way it frames an experience of landscape, light and time. Through dispersed planning, natural materials and respect for existing vegetation, Fragmentos turns a large hotel programme into a sequence of walkable, inhabitable and atmospheric moments in the forest. For design observers, it is a clear case of hospitality architecture shaped by context; for travellers, it is a place to slow down and reconnect with the rhythm of nature.

Design Team: Fragmentos is a Portuguese studio based in Lisbon, founded in 1994, with work across architecture, urban design and engineering. The studio studies the relationship between built space and human experience, and describes its work as designing spaces that provide a sense of belonging and well-being.

Fragmentos began as a collective of four architects - Duarte Pinto-Coelho, Marcus Cerdeira, Miguel Martins Santos and Pedro Silva Lopes - and has since grown into a team of more than 60 architects, engineers, designers and other professionals. Its work spans residential buildings, urban planning, hospitality and public environments. In Sublime Comporta Sand, this multidisciplinary capacity becomes a design strategy that balances hotel operation, landscape care and the experience of retreat.
