MRDK | Archicasting
2025 Previous Next
Kadre Architects | Archicasting
Feature: Project - In the sun-scorched expanse of Lancaster, California, a remarkable transformation has taken place. The Sierra, a groundbreaking project by Kadre Architects, has reimagined a formerly blighted motel complex into a vibrant community for families transitioning out of homelessness. This innovative development, commissioned by Hope the Mission, showcases how thoughtful design can breathe new life into neglected spaces. The 4-acre site now houses 38 transitional housing units, each enhanced by a striking solar porch that doubles the living area. These latticed structures create a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, offering both visual interest and practical shelter from the harsh desert sun. The architects' ingenuity in expanding cramped motel rooms demonstrates a keen understanding of spatial economics and resident comfort. Kadre Architects, in collaboration with landscape firm TerreMoto, have transformed asphalt expanses into lush, permeable grounds. Colorful meandering pathways, inspired by Brice Marden's artwork, weave through the site, unifying disparate elements into a cohesive whole. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also addresses crucial environmental concerns by allowing rainwater to replenish the aquifer. The Sierra stands as a testament to the power of design in fostering community and dignity. By relegating parking to the rear and prioritizing pedestrian-friendly spaces, the project creates a true sense of place. High-albedo paint on necessary hard surfaces and strategically placed shade structures combat the desert heat, while vibrant colors throughout the campus inject energy and optimism into every corner. This project exemplifies how adaptive reuse, coupled with sensitive design, can transform not just buildings, but lives. The Sierra offers more than just shelter; it provides a foundation for hope and renewal in the high desert of Los Angeles County. The project responds to the unique demands of an aging rural population, where nearly 40% of residents are over 65 years old. The home was conceived not only as a private retreat for its owners but as a gathering space where family, friends, and the local community can connect. One of Mountainfoot Base’s defining features is the expansive semi-outdoor "one-room" design, which occupies more than half of the building’s total area. This versatile space serves multiple functions throughout the year, from hosting family events to community gatherings. Its open layout facilitates smooth transitions between the indoor living areas and the exterior courtyard. The use of oak flooring indoors gradually blends into sand-colored tiles and finely textured stone surfaces, creating a seamless dialogue between the house and its natural surroundings. The home is topped with a gently curved roof, which follows the contours of the nearby mountain. This roof not only anchors the structure to the landscape but also enhances its relationship with the environment through subtle reflections of light and shadow on its glossy ceiling. The combination of traditional Japanese construction techniques with modern materials underscores Ota's commitment to creating spaces that are both respectful of the past and adaptive to the future. Another key element of Sanrokudo’s design is its attention to flexibility. The house is designed with dual-layered sliding partitions that allow for various configurations of the living spaces. These partitions create fluid boundaries between indoor and outdoor areas, making the home adaptable for different social functions or seasons. By blending local craftsmanship with innovative design, Ota Architecture Office has created a space that fosters both family life and community engagement, addressing the broader societal challenge of rural depopulation. In this project, Kenyu Ota has not only designed a home but also a social hub that encourages interaction among family members and the wider community. The project offers a thoughtful solution to the challenges of aging rural communities, providing a flexible, adaptable space that bridges the gap between private retreat and communal living. Design Team - Founded in 2019, Ota Architecture Office, led by Kenyu Ota, has quickly emerged as a prominent voice in rural architectural design, with a focus on creating flexible, multifunctional spaces that address the challenges of depopulation and aging communities. Based in Miyagi, Japan, the firm combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary architectural techniques to create buildings that not only serve their functional purpose but also foster community interaction and connection with the natural environment. Under the leadership of Kenyu Ota, the firm’s design philosophy centers around adaptability and sustainability, often addressing the complex social issues faced by rural areas. Ota’s designs incorporate local materials and construction methods, reflecting a deep respect for the cultural and environmental context in which each project is built. The firm’s projects, such as Sanrokudo, showcase a commitment to creating spaces that are not only visually striking but also deeply functional and socially responsible. Mountainfoot Base, a weekend home designed for a semi-retired couple in Ishinomaki, exemplifies Ota’s approach to rural architecture. The house integrates large semi-outdoor spaces with flexible interior layouts, designed to foster both private family life and community gatherings. The project is a reflection of Ota Architecture Office’s commitment to creating spaces that adapt to the changing needs of rural communities, offering solutions that encourage social interaction and support sustainable living. The firm’s ability to blend modern design elements with traditional construction techniques has earned them recognition within Japan and internationally. Their approach to architecture is rooted in a deep understanding of the local context, ensuring that each project resonates with its surroundings while addressing contemporary architectural challenges. OTA archistudio continues to push the boundaries of rural architecture, offering thoughtful, innovative solutions to the evolving needs of Japan’s aging population. 2023 Previous Next

Project Name: OUTPOST CAFE Location: Ganghwa Island, South Korea Design Team: space design A.LIVE Lead Architect: Jeon Heesu Project Area: 731 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: PARK JONGSU Feature: Project - In a striking reinterpretation of historical Korean defense architecture, OUTPOST Cafe emerges as a contemporary sanctuary on the cultural landscape of Ganghwa. Designed by space design A.LIVE under the direction of lead architect Jeon Heesu, this 731-square-metre structure transforms the concept of a traditional "Dondae" fortress into a modern refuge where urbanites can reconnect with nature. The project's most distinctive feature is its innovative use of circular, low-lying walls that pay homage to historical Korean fortifications while serving a deeply contemplative purpose. These architectural elements, rendered in raw concrete, create a series of embracing spaces that guide visitors through the building with an almost maternal sensibility. The walls act as both physical and psychological boundaries, carefully orchestrating movement and visual connections to the surrounding landscape. What sets OUTPOST apart is its sophisticated manipulation of light and shadow. The architects have deliberately employed subdued interior lighting to create a compelling dialogue between built form and natural illumination. This careful orchestration draws the eye outward, making the surrounding environment an integral part of the café experience. The result is a space that feels both protective and expansive, challenging conventional notions of interior and exterior boundaries. The café's material palette is notably restrained, dominated by exposed concrete surfaces that echo the fortified architecture that inspired it. This industrial rawness is softened by the building's curved geometries and strategic openings that frame views of the landscape. The space represents a masterful balance between historical reference and contemporary design, creating an environment that serves both as a functional café and a contemplative retreat. Through this project, space design A.LIVE demonstrates how historical architectural elements can be reimagined to address modern needs for sanctuary and connection with nature. OUTPOST stands as a testament to architecture's power to create meaningful dialogue between past and present, artificial and natural, protection and openness. Design Team - Founded in 2014, space design A.LIVE has established itself as an innovative architectural design studio based in Seoul, South Korea. Operating under the compelling motto "A.LIVE brings space ALIVE," the practice has cultivated a distinctive approach to spatial design that seamlessly integrates narrative, functionality, and aesthetic innovation. Led by Principal Architect Jeon Heesu, the studio specializes in a comprehensive range of architectural services, from brand identity development to full-scale architectural projects, interior design, and bespoke installations. Their design philosophy is anchored in three core principles: "Your Story," which emphasizes client narrative as the foundation of each project; "Our Design Thinking," which translates these narratives into spatial value through innovative reinterpretation; and "Alive Being," which ensures the sustainable implementation of these values in physical form. The firm's portfolio showcases their expertise across diverse typologies, with notable projects demonstrating their ability to create spaces that resonate with both cultural context and contemporary needs. Their integrated approach to architecture encompasses everything from conceptual development to detailed interior solutions and custom furniture design. Based in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, space design A.LIVE has garnered recognition for their thoughtful architectural interventions that consistently challenge conventional spatial paradigms while maintaining a strong connection to functionality and user experience. Recent works like the OUTPOST CAFE exemplify their ability to synthesize historical references with modern architectural language, creating spaces that are both innovative and deeply rooted in cultural context. 2024 Previous Next

Project Name: UCCA Clay Museum Location: Yixing, China Design Team: Kengo Kuma & Associates Area: 3,437 m² Completion: 2024 Photographers: Fangfang Tian, Eiichi Kano Feature: Project - Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has unveiled a sculptural ceramics museum in Yixing, China, featuring an undulating form clad in hand-glazed terracotta panels that pays homage to the region's millennium-old pottery tradition. The UCCA Clay Museum, completed in 2024, emerges from its post-industrial context as a contemporary interpretation of both the local landscape and architectural vernacular. Situated on the former grounds of traditional pottery factories, the 3,437-square-metre structure serves as a cultural bridge between Yixing's rich ceramic heritage and its future as a hub for artistic innovation. The museum's most striking feature is its mountain-like silhouette, which draws inspiration from two significant local references: the historic Shushan Mountain, celebrated in Northern Song dynasty literature, and the traditional "dragon kilns" that have fired pottery in the region for over six centuries. This dual reference creates a powerful architectural narrative that anchors the building in both the physical and cultural landscape of Yixing. The structure's complex geometry is achieved through an innovative inverted shell roof, characterized by virtual sphere-carved surfaces supported by a sophisticated four-layer wooden lattice beam system. This engineering solution not only provides structural integrity but also creates a series of dramatic interior spaces that guide visitors through the museum's exhibitions. Developed in close collaboration with local artisans, the exterior is composed of custom-made ceramic panels featuring varied glazing techniques that create subtle color gradations. These panels respond dynamically to changing light conditions, producing an ever-shifting visual experience that mirrors the transformative nature of the ceramic firing process. The building's form is strategically punctured to establish meaningful connections with its surroundings, creating sight lines and physical links to the adjacent pottery factory and canal. The materiality of the facade panels – warm and slightly textured – offers a tactile experience reminiscent of traditional Chinese tea ware, transforming the building envelope into a large-scale ceramic vessel that houses and celebrates the very craft it represents. Design Team - Founded in 1990 by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, Kengo Kuma and Associates (KKAA) has established itself as a global leader in thoughtful, context-driven design. With a team of highly skilled professionals across offices in Tokyo, Paris, Beijing, and Shanghai, the firm has completed innovative projects in over 40 countries, seamlessly blending architecture with the natural environment. Kengo Kuma 's design philosophy emphasizes a deep connection to place, using natural materials and sensitive interventions to craft buildings that elevate the human experience while respecting local cultures and ecologies. From large-scale cultural institutions to intimate residential retreats, KKAA's portfolio showcases a mastery of scale and typology, united by a commitment to sustainability and an innate understanding of how architecture can foster meaningful relationships between people and their surroundings. With Kengo Kuma at the helm, KKAA continues to push the boundaries of contemporary architecture, integrating innovative technologies and traditional craftsmanship to realize visionary designs that redefine the role of the built environment. Atelier d'More has transformed a dilapidated rural compound into a striking boutique hotel that seamlessly blends contemporary design with traditional Chinese architecture. The Jing Stay, located in the historic Denggezhuang Village, offers a tranquil retreat that pays homage to its mountainous surroundings. The architects have masterfully united old and new elements, preserving stone walls from the original structure while introducing a bold, modern aesthetic. A standout feature is the undulating gray "hat" that crowns the white buildings, creating a captivating visual contrast and echoing the silhouette of distant mountains. The design team removed interior walls inside to create expansive, fluid spaces. Five tent-like ceiling structures in the main public area cleverly conceal existing beams while establishing a new spatial rhythm that enhances the sense of continuity and flow. The project's centerpiece is an inward-facing courtyard, where a curvilinear roof embraces a semi-circular canopy, artfully framing the sky and embodying the Chinese concept of "round sky and square earth." Atelier d'More's restrained approach to materials and lighting emphasizes functionality while keeping costs low. This thoughtful renovation provides a unique hospitality experience and demonstrates how contemporary design can respectfully reimagine rural Chinese architecture for modern use. Founded in 2015, Atelier d'More has rapidly emerged as a formidable presence in China's architectural landscape. Project Name: Dynamic Center for "The Springs" Location: Shanghai, China Design Team: gmp Architects Project Area: 193,540 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: CreatAR Images Client: Tishman Speyer Partner Practice In China: Tongji Architectural Design Group Feature: Project - German architecture firm gmp Architects has completed a striking office campus in Shanghai's Yangpu District, featuring six towers arranged in a distinctive windmill formation that creates a new urban hub in the rapidly developing area of The Springs. The Dynamic Center complex, spanning 193,540 square meters, represents a bold architectural statement that seamlessly integrates high-density office space with an organically shaped retail podium. The development's most distinctive feature is its arrangement of high-rise slabs, where pairs of towers are connected by three-story bridges and subtly offset from one another, with one pair rotated 90 degrees to create dynamic spatial relationships. Rising between 100 and 133 meters, the towers are characterized by a sophisticated facade system of horizontal aluminum slats that extend beyond the building edges. The copper-colored sun protection elements not only provide practical climate control but also lend a warm materiality to the otherwise monumental scale of the development. The project, commissioned by Tishman Speyer, serves as the centerpiece of the 90-hectare Springs development and is currently home to the Douyin Group, the Chinese version of TikTok. Its success lies in the thoughtful integration of public and private spaces, with restaurants and retail outlets activating both street frontages and interior promenades. Perhaps most notably, the complex introduces a series of sky gardens at the towers' ends, creating natural ventilation channels while offering premium amenity spaces for office users. These architectural voids become a defining element of the project's silhouette against Shanghai's skyline. The development's pedestrian-focused design, complete with interconnecting bridges and varied pathways, creates a vibrant urban environment that remains active throughout the day, successfully bridging adjacent developments by other international architects including Büro Ole Scheeren and Henning Larsen. Design Team - Established in 1965 by visionary architects Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg, gmp Architects has evolved into one of the world's most influential architectural practices. The Hamburg-based firm, now led by its founders alongside executive partners Nikolaus Goetze, Hubert Nienhoff, Stephan Schütz, and Wu Wei, exemplifies the seamless integration of rational functionality with contextual sensitivity. From their breakthrough project - the Berlin Tegel Airport competition win in 1965 - to their current portfolio spanning 23 countries, gmp has consistently demonstrated mastery in architectural typologies ranging from cultural institutions to transportation infrastructure. Their design philosophy emphasizes spatial clarity, structural logic, and material authenticity, while addressing contemporary challenges of urbanization, digitalization, and adaptive reuse. With 13 global offices and over 300 professionals, gmp has garnered more than 600 architectural awards, including 400 first prizes. Their commitment to sustainable design is evidenced by numerous LEED and regional green building certifications. The firm's establishment of the Academy for Architectural Culture in 2008 further demonstrates their dedication to fostering cross-cultural architectural dialogue and innovation. gmp's extensive portfolio of nearly 500 completed projects showcases their ability to create enduring architecture that harmoniously balances aesthetic longevity with environmental responsibility, consistently prioritizing public value in their architectural solutions. 2024 Previous Next

With its striking geometric forms and bold brick facade, the Samseon-dong Mix-use development by a round architects breathes new life into a dense urban district of Seoul. The L-shaped site prompted an ingenious massing strategy that visually unites the new building with an adjacent existing structure into a cohesive cubic composition. Using the same red brick cladding across both volumes allows them to be read as a singular architectural statement, despite their differing scales. The architects deftly played with lines, proportions and materiality to forge a harmonious whole from disparate parts. This contextual sensitivity is balanced by moments of sculptural expression that lend the project a distinct contemporary edge. The highlight is the triangular facade treatment at the corner, which creates a dramatic visual pivot point. With its angular surfaces and protruding brick fins, this striking element imparts a sense of movement and dynamism. It elevates the design from the ordinary while enlivening the streetscape with an eye-catching landmark. Inside, the interplay of form continues, with the triangular protrusion carving out unique interior spaces full of angled surfaces and diagonal sightlines. This innovative mixed-use intervention exemplifies how strategic urban infill can enhance density while raising the design bar. Founded in 2013, a round architects is a Seoul-based practice lauded for their contextually attuned yet imaginative designs. Project Name: House Steynberg Location: Midrand, South Africa Design Team: TwoFiveFive Architects Total Floor Area: 414 m² Completion: 2021 Photography: Paris Brummer Feature: Project - Nestled along the banks of the Jukskei River in South Africa's prestigious Waterfall Estate, House Steynberg emerges as a masterful testament to contemporary residential architecture. Designed by TwoFiveFive Architects, this 414-square-meter dwelling seamlessly merges minimalist aesthetics with a profound connection to its natural surroundings. The residence stands as an elegant solution to a fundamental architectural challenge: creating a sanctuary that responds to both its topographical context and the client's desire for a home that fosters meaningful connections. Lead architects André Krige and Helain Foley have orchestrated a delicate balance between openness and intimacy, allowing the structure to breathe with its environment. What distinguishes House Steynberg is its thoughtful volumetric composition, which creates a dynamic interplay between interior and exterior spaces. The architects have employed a sophisticated arrangement of clean lines and minimalist forms, using materials such as glass, concrete, and steel not merely for aesthetic appeal but for their durability and low-maintenance properties. Floor-to-ceiling windows function as living canvases, framing the ever-changing riverside landscape while dissolving conventional boundaries between inside and outside. This permeability allows natural light to flood the interior spaces and invites the gentle sounds of the river to permeate the home. The spatial organization reveals a nuanced understanding of contemporary living patterns. Open-plan communal areas encourage social interaction, while strategically positioned private zones offer moments of solitude and contemplation. This fluid circulation creates a home that adapts effortlessly to various modes of habitation, whether hosting gatherings or providing quiet retreat. House Steynberg exemplifies how architectural design can achieve harmony between site-specific responsiveness and contemporary expression. The project stands as a refined example of residential architecture that honors its context while embracing a distinctly modern sensibility—where elegant simplicity meets purposeful functionality in perfect equilibrium. Design Team - TwoFiveFive Architects is a commercial architectural practice and consultancy founded by principal architects Theo Kruger and André Krige with the intention of creating spatial and structural solutions that are powerful in both purpose and poetry – designs that challenge convention, inspire curiosity and instigate change, while remaining buildable and within budget. With offices spanning Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, they strive towards imbuing every project with local, site-specific relevance, no matter its national or international location. They work in consideration of the client's vision and budget, in sympathy with the site's context and community, and in advancement of their environmental agenda. Their creative mandate is to design environments that extend beyond form and function, to arrive at solutions that are as innovate as they are enduring. With the understanding that what they create will far outlive them, their studio aims to translate every design opportunity into an iconic architectural asset with inherent, inter-generational value. Working in absence of any singular aesthetic, their output is first and foremost grounded in ingenuity and experience – where materials and processes are interrogated, adapted and refined to arrive at a compelling, considered design language that elevates each site and the way in which it engages its users. In doing so, they aim for their work to continually intrigue the mind and inspire the soul. Irrespective of the sector or scale of application, their commitment to this philosophy remains consistent – whether designing gender inclusive bathrooms for an educational institution, transforming a 100 m² inner city stand into a mixed-use multi-storey development, or custom-engineering towel rails for a private residence. 2021 Previous Next

2024 Previous Next

2025 Previous Next

Project Name: % Arabica Shanghai EXPO World Location: Shanghai, China Design Team: Nguyen Khai Architects & Associates Project Area: 179㎡ Completion Year: 2025 Lead Architect: Nguyen Quang Khai Photography: Runzi Zhu Feature: Project - % Arabica's latest Shanghai outpost redefines the urban coffee experience through an ethereal architectural intervention that masterfully balances intimacy with openness. Situated in the bustling EXPO World district, this 179-square-metre space by Nguyen Khai Architects & Associates transforms the conventional coffee shop typology into a contemplative sanctuary through its distinctive tunnel-like design. The defining feature is an intricate system of white-painted mesh strips that vary in size and configuration, creating a pavilion-inspired passage that envelops visitors in a cocoon-like environment. This architectural gesture serves both aesthetic and functional purposes – the semi-transparent mesh mediates between indoor and outdoor spaces while providing essential privacy without compromising the sense of connection to the surrounding urban context. The interior follows a rigorously symmetrical composition organized into three distinct layers: furniture, the mesh tunnel structure, and integrated greenery. Two opposing entrances naturally divide the space into service and seating zones, with a curved waiting bench acting as an elegant transitional element. The designers have paid particular attention to lighting, with the counter area dramatically spotlit while the seating area is illuminated by custom Chemex-inspired pendant lamps that reference the art of coffee-making. The exterior design demonstrates equal consideration, with the white tunnel structure creating dynamic visual effects as visitors move around the space. Carefully positioned outdoor seating maintains the brand's signature aesthetic while complementing rather than competing with the architectural intervention. The innovative use of checkered planters between seating groups not only introduces natural elements but also creates subtle spatial demarcations that ensure privacy without isolation. This thoughtful balance between architectural ambition and functional requirements has resulted in a space that serves both as a striking urban landmark and an intimate retreat, embodying % Arabica's commitment to sophisticated design while creating a new paradigm for coffee shop architecture in Shanghai's competitive hospitality landscape. Design Team - Founded in 2016 in the historic city of Hue, Vietnam, Nguyen Khai Architects & Associates (NKAA) has established itself as a notable presence in contemporary Southeast Asian architecture.
Japanese architecture firm HIBINOSEKKEI + Youji no Shiro has transformed a former office space into a vibrant kindergarten in Beijing's culturally rich Chaoyang District. The IBG "H" Kindergarten stands out with its innovative approach to early childhood education, blending art, nature, and physical activity in a compact urban setting. Departing from China's typical large-scale kindergartens, this intimate learning environment prioritizes quality over quantity. The design cleverly maximizes limited space, creating a three-dimensional playground that encourages vertical movement and exploration. A striking external staircase connects all three floors, promoting daily exercise and outdoor play. Inspired by Beijing's historical nickname "Yanjing" and its association with birds, the kindergarten's concept revolves around children "spreading their wings" as they learn and grow. This avian theme is subtly woven throughout the space, fostering a sense of freedom and imagination. The project's standout feature is its art-centric approach, reflecting the neighborhood's cultural atmosphere. A narrow gallery space at the entrance showcases both children's artwork and local artists' pieces, seamlessly integrating art appreciation into daily kindergarten life. This unique fusion of education and culture creates an enriching environment where children can develop their sensitivities to art and nature from an early age. HIBINOSEKKEI, founded in 1972, has evolved into a pioneering architectural firm specializing in children's and welfare facilities. - F住宅 Celoria Architects | Archicasting
2020 Previous Next
Torafu Architects | Archicasting
In the heart of Tokyo's vibrant Shibuya district, the Arc'teryx Tokyo Creation Center emerges as a beacon of innovative design and outdoor inspiration. Conceived by the visionary team at Suppose Design Office, this renovation project transforms an existing structure into a dynamic hub for creativity and collaboration, marking Arc'teryx's first creation center outside North America. The center's design philosophy, aptly dubbed "OUTSIDE IN," seamlessly blends interior and exterior elements, echoing the brand's ethos of harmony with nature. This concept is brilliantly executed through a series of thoughtful architectural interventions, from the indigo-dyed wooden entrance reminiscent of Arc'teryx's iconic 'A' logo to the expansive hinoki wood display wall that greets visitors upon entry. Each floor serves a distinct purpose, with areas dedicated to prototyping, office spaces, and a rooftop terrace offering breathtaking views – all interconnected by a cohesive design language. The centerpiece of the ground floor, a circular arrangement of fan-shaped cutting tables beneath an acoustic cypress louver ceiling, creates a focal point that encourages collaboration and creativity. Perhaps the most striking feature is the integration of art installations throughout the space, each piece carefully selected to evoke the essence of mountains – a nod to Arc'teryx's origins and core values. From indigo-dyed rope sculptures to large-scale photographic works, these artistic elements infuse the environment with a sense of adventure and reverence for nature. TORAFU ARCHITECTS, founded in 2004 by Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro, has established itself as a visionary force in the architectural design industry. Feature: Project - Álvaro Siza Vieira's sculptural new wing for the Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal elegantly expands the contemporary art institution while deferentially embracing its lush garden setting. The minimalist concrete, glass and wood structure emerges from the verdant landscape like an elongated pavilion, providing 4,200 square meters of new exhibition spaces distributed across three floors. The building's modest scale and horizontal massing allow it to blend seamlessly into the surroundings, with an elevated gallery connecting it to the existing museum while preserving pathways and mature trees. Floor-to-ceiling windows drench the luminous interior with natural light and frame picturesque views of the parkland outside. Siza's typically restrained material palette of Fair-Faced concrete, enameled wood and polished stone creates a warm, textural counterpoint to the sleek architectural forms. The 18 flexible gallery spaces are designed to museum standards with provisions for artificial lighting, climate control and accessibility. Perhaps the wing's most ingenious feature is its sensitive choreography of circulation routes that separate art handling from visitor flows. Service access on the south side discretely accommodates freight deliveries, while a monumental east-facing entrance welcomes the public through a sheltered atrium into the interconnected exhibition spaces. An exemplar of architectural Jose Mateus poetically enhancing its surroundings. Design Team - Álvaro Siza Vieira, one of the most influential architects of the late 20th century, has led an acclaimed practice founded in 1954 after graduating from the University of Porto. Now in its 69th year, the firm is helmed by Siza himself along with a team of associates including his son Álvaro Leite Siza Vieira. The Pritzker Prize laureate's oeuvre demonstrates an exquisite mastery of form, material, and context. From his seminal early works like the Boa Nova Tea House to landmarks such as the Serralves Museum and the reconstruction of Lisbon's Chiado district, Siza's buildings are imbued with a keen sense of place and a sculptural yet functional rigor. His architectural language adroitly synthesizes modernist principles with the rich traditions of Portuguese construction. Siza's deft hand creates buildings of great tectonic clarity yet ample room for poetic experiences of light, texture, and spatial choreography. With prestigious honors like the Pritzker, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, and the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, Siza's prolific six-decade career has secured his place among architecture's most revered living masters. His built works across Europe, Asia, and the Americas serve as an enduring legacy of beauty, authenticity, and a tireless pursuit of design excellence. Previous Next

Located in suburban San José, this 134-square-meter structure showcases VOID's innovative eco-conscious design philosophy, transforming architecture into a floating platform that coexists harmoniously with the natural landscape. The project is composed of two primary horizontal planes: a base that appears to hover above the ground, minimizing site impact, and a shading canopy that provides essential shelter while artfully framing the surrounding landscape. The building employs minimalist aesthetics while strategically utilizing natural light and ventilation to create bright, permeable spaces. Large apertures not only enhance visual connections between interior and exterior but significantly reduce reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation. The project's most remarkable achievement lies in its precise response to the tropical environment and deep commitment to sustainable design principles. Through the thoughtful application of local materials and construction techniques, the architecture demonstrates exceptional site sensitivity. The overall design emphasizes authentic connections with nature, transforming the building into an ideal sanctuary for physical and spiritual well-being, setting new standards for sustainable architectural design in tropical climates. Design Team - VOID, established in 2012 by architects Sergio Frugone, Felipe Rossi, and Ricardo Sevilla, is an innovative international architectural practice. The practice is structured around three pillars: Experience, Performance, and Execution, all converging with the client at their center. Under the leadership of its founding partners, VOID has cultivated a strong culture of multidisciplinary collaboration, with each partner bringing deep expertise in their respective areas. Sergio Frugone serves as Director of Experience Practice, with extensive experience in master planning, museums, and hospitality design; Felipe Rossi leads the Performance Practice, focusing on large-scale complex project development; and Ricardo Sevilla, as Director of Execution Practice, provides critical technical expertise for project implementation. VOID's portfolio encompasses a diverse range of architectural typologies, from private residences to public buildings. WOS Architects | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Nestled in the serene Mae Rim landscapes of Chiang Mai, this striking residence offers a profound connection to nature while providing urban-style comforts. Designed by WOS Architects, the Mae Rim House seamlessly blends into its verdant surroundings, embracing fresh air, verdant trees, mountain vistas, and the soothing sounds of the Mae Sa Stream. The two-story dwelling features an elongated silhouette with a dramatically pitched roof that slopes towards the upper floor edges, maintaining an elegant proportional balance. Architecturally deft, the layout divides the residence into two wings united by a double-height atrium at the heart of the home. This airy central space, open on both sides to the outdoors, facilitates natural cross ventilation enhanced by the mountain breeze. Privacy and connection are masterfully balanced, with the southern wing housing bedrooms that offer picturesque mountain and stream views, while the northern wing contains a guest suite and open lounge linked to the atrium. On the upper level, the pitched roof creates lofty living spaces reminiscent of an attic yet without feeling confined, achieved through ingenious cutouts that allow natural light to pour in alongside planters with trees. Sustainability was also paramount, with existing furniture and appliances relocated from the client's former Bangkok home, lending a sense of continuity. Indirect lighting washes the spaces in a soft, diffused glow, while a serene taupe palette complements the natural surroundings. A triumph of design synthesis, Mae Rim House forges an indelible connection between dwelling and landscape. Design Team - Founded in 2019, WOS Architects is a boutique Bangkok-based practice helmed by the duo of Prueksakun Kornudom and Ornpailin Leelasiriwong. Kornudom received his architectural training at Assumption University, while Leelasiriwong holds degrees from Chulalongkorn University and ETH Zurich's prestigious MAS Urban Design program. Though small in size, WOS punches well above its weight class, with a portfolio encompassing architectural design, interiors, and innovative projects that defy simple categorization. The firm's design ethos prizes simplicity and practicality, but also actively embraces ambiguity. WOS conceives of architecture as crafting places not just for human dwellers, but for guests and nature as well - their work seeks to dissolve boundaries between building and environment. WOS's name itself exemplifies their multivalent approach - it can be read as three meaningless English letters, or interpreted from the Thai alphabet as meaning "enough." This openness to interpretation extends to their architectural language, which resists rigid codification in favor of nuanced, contextually-driven solutions. From compact urban renovations like the JY House to more expansive projects like the Little C Bakery Shop, WOS deftly navigates constraints with rational simplicity. Yet they also imbue each undertaking with a subtle ambiguity that provokes fresh perspectives. For this emerging studio, creativity arises from exploring possibility over probability - their practice is defined by simple, rational, yet delightfully multivalent outputs. Previous Next
