Mega Mat MVRDV | Archicasting
Project Name: Mega Mat Installation Location: Lan Khon Mueang Town Square, Bangkok, Thailand Design Team: MVRDV Area: 875 m² Completion: February 2025 Client: Creative Economic Agency, Thailand Partners: PTT Global Chemicals, Embassy of the Netherlands Exhibition Period: February 8-23, 2025 (Bangkok Design Week) Materials: 532 recycled plastic mats (1.8 x 0.9m each) Function: Temporary Installation, Public Space, Exhibition Space Photography: Depth of Field Feature: Project - In a vibrant statement on sustainability and public space, MVRDV has unveiled the Mega Mat, a striking temporary installation that transforms Bangkok's Lan Khon Mueang Town Square into an engaging social platform. The 875-square-metre installation, created for Bangkok Design Week 2025, ingeniously repurposes over 500 recycled plastic mats into a supersized version of the traditional Thai 'Sua' - a household mat that has been central to Thai family life for generations. The installation's most compelling feature is its dual function as both public space and infographic. Through a carefully orchestrated color gradient, the Mega Mat tells the story of Thailand's plastic waste journey: from red zones representing unsanitary landfills to the hopeful green center symbolizing recycled materials. This clever design approach transforms data visualization into an immersive spatial experience, creating a narrative that visitors can literally walk through and interact with. MVRDV's design pays homage to local architecture, with its lifted corner and color scheme echoing the rooflines of the nearby Wat Suthat Thepwararam temple. The modular composition, featuring 532 pieces each measuring 1.8 by 0.9 metres, demonstrates the versatility of recycled materials while incorporating traditional Thai textile patterns. This marriage of contemporary environmental concerns with cultural heritage creates a powerful statement about sustainable design's role in preserving and extending traditional practices. Perhaps most significantly, the installation embodies circular design principles in its planned afterlife - following Bangkok Design Week, the individual mats will be redistributed as yoga mats, donated to local temples, or upcycled into new products. This thoughtful approach to the installation's lifecycle transforms it from a temporary architectural statement into a catalyst for ongoing sustainable practices, offering a blueprint for how temporary installations can have lasting impact beyond their initial display. Design Team – MVRDV, established in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries, has grown into a globally influential architecture practice. The Wuhan Northwest Lake Guojin Center, recently completed by DuShe Architectural Design, stands as a striking addition to the Hankou skyline. Composed of two office towers reaching heights of 240 and 100 meters, the project serves as the capstone to the Northwest Lake Business area development. The design's most distinctive feature is its bold diamond-shaped diagonal cut, which creates a powerful visual identity for the complex. This iconic form reshapes the area's skyline while responding to both the urban context and nearby lake views. DuShe's approach balances efficiency with aesthetics, employing rectangular floor plans for maximum usability while introducing dynamic elements through strategic massing and façade treatments. The curtain wall system, carefully developed in collaboration with consultants, incorporates vertical decorative strips that accentuate the towers' upward thrust. Inside, the lobby spaces break from convention with flowing, cave-like interiors. Curving stone surfaces, meticulously rationalized to minimize costs, create a sculptural environment that challenges typical office tower expectations. Project Name: NOT A HOTEL FUKUOKA Location: Fukuoka, Japan Design Team: axonometric + NKS2 architects Total Floor Area: 1,259.42 m² Completion Date: August 2023 Photographers: YASHIRO PHOTO OFFICE, Kosei Kojima Structural Design: Mika Araki Structural Design Office (now Graph Studio) Main Contractor: Matsuyama Construction Landscape Design: DESIGN NETWORK ASSOCIATES Interior Design: Nomura Kogei A.N.D. Mechanical Engineering: SEED Design Supervision: IMD Alliance + Orange and Partners Lighting Design: ModuleX Building Height: 19.92 meters Floors: 5 above ground Site Area: 530.20 m² Feature: Project - In the heart of Fukuoka's tranquil residential landscape, a revolutionary hospitality concept emerges that challenges traditional notions of living and travel. NOT A HOTEL FUKUOKA, designed by axonometric and NKS2 architects, stands as a radical reimagining of urban accommodation—a "distributed hotel" that blurs the boundaries between temporary stay and permanent residence. The project's most striking innovation lies in its sculptural verticality, conceived as a "three-dimensional city" where eight distinctly conceptualized rooms are meticulously stacked to reflect contemporary lifestyle diversity. Each room is a unique ecosystem, ranging from dedicated workspace configurations with expansive desks to culinary-focused spaces designed for private chef experiences. Strategically nestled adjacent to a park and shrine, the building's design demonstrates a nuanced dialogue with its surrounding urban fabric. The architects have masterfully fragmented the building's volume, breaking down the mass to echo the scale of neighboring detached houses. This approach creates a facade that resembles both a small mountain and an organic urban landscape, simultaneously respecting and transforming its context. Sophisticated environmental consideration is evident in the carefully angled terraces, each surrounded by distinctive plantings and positioned to mitigate visual intrusion while maintaining an open, green-facing orientation. The result is an architectural intervention that seamlessly integrates with the existing urban ecosystem while pointing towards future living paradigms. With its flexible technological infrastructure, NOT A HOTEL FUKUOKA enables users to reimagine travel as a lifestyle—a fluid, interconnected experience that transcends traditional hospitality boundaries. Design Team - In the dynamic landscape of contemporary architectural practice, axonometric emerges as a visionary design firm that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. Established in 2021 and headquartered in Fukuoka, Japan, the practice has rapidly distinguished itself through a holistic approach to spatial design that integrates architecture, interior design, landscape, and urban planning. Led by CEO and founding principal Kei Sasaki, a first-class architect with a distinguished academic background from Kyushu University and Tokyo University of Arts, axonometric represents a new generation of design thinking. Sasaki's prior experience at SOU FUJIMOTO ARCHITECTS has significantly influenced the firm's innovative design philosophy, characterized by nuanced spatial relationships and contextual sensitivity. The firm's portfolio, exemplified by projects like NOT A HOTEL FUKUOKA, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of architectural intervention. Their design methodology goes beyond mere construction, focusing on creating adaptive environments that respond to evolving human experiences. With a multidisciplinary team of architects, urban development consultants, and design professionals, axonometric has already garnered significant recognition, including selection for the 2025 Japan World Exposition design proposals and finalist status in international competitions. By seamlessly blending technological innovation, contextual awareness, and profound spatial intelligence, axonometric is redefining architectural practice for the 21st century. 2023 Previous Next
BENT Architecture | Archicasting
2025 Previous Next
Nendo brings its architectural ingenuity to a narrow triangular site in Karuizawa, Nagano with the "Wall House." Faced with the challenge of blocking views from the adjacent road while still enjoying the verdant surroundings, the designers conceived a brilliant "filter" solution - a series of angled concrete block walls. The walls, constructed from approximately 2,050 blocks using CO2-absorbing "CO2-SUICOM®" concrete, are arrayed in five parallel rows across the 110-meter site. The living spaces are cleverly tucked into the gaps between these walls, with sightlines carefully controlled by adjusting the angle of each block in 3-degree increments. In areas with a single wall, views are unidirectional, while overlapping double walls create a dynamic play of transparency and enclosure depending on the alignment of the blocks. Bedrooms and bathrooms are shielded for privacy, while living areas enjoy a calibrated sense of openness to the landscape. The resulting architecture is a pioneering experiment in cultivating visual permeability through mass and void. Nendo has crafted an inspired residence where prospect and refuge seamlessly coexist behind the smart screening of these remarkable "filter walls." Established in 2002 by Oki Sato, nendo has rapidly ascended as one of the most influential and awarded design firms. Led by Chief Designer Sato and Managing Directors Akihiro Ito and Takaaki Hama, the Tokyo and Milan-based practice employs over 40 designers across numerous disciplines. nendo's human-centred approach results in designs that are conceptually innovative and functionally precise. With a distinctive flair for playing with visual perception, their work reinterprets the expected through clever manipulations of material, form, and scale. This sensitive mastery is evident across their diverse portfolio spanning architecture, interior design, product design, furniture, and installations. The firm's prolific output and consistent ingenuity have earned nendo widespread international acclaim. Project Name: Oeiras House Location: Oeiras, Portugal Design Team: OODA Project Area: 350㎡ Completion: 2024 Landscape Design: p4 Engineering Tekk, A3R Lda Engineering: TEKK, A3R Lda Photography: Fernando Guerra | FG+SG Feature: Project - In a masterful interplay of topography and architectural innovation, OODA's latest residential project in Oeiras, Portugal, emerges as a compelling study in harmonizing built form with natural terrain. The 350-square-metre Oeiras House, completed in 2024, demonstrates how challenging site conditions can be transformed into extraordinary design opportunities. The project's most striking feature is its central void – a regulating patio that serves as both the heart of the home and a sophisticated distribution mechanism for the program. Rather than struggling against the site's significant slope, the architects have embraced it, creating a half-buried entrance that dramatically reveals itself through a water feature that doubles as a scenic pool, introducing natural light and reflection into the subterranean space. The house's composition is particularly noteworthy for its three-sided arrangement around the central void, where social and private spaces are unified through transparent interconnecting elements. This transparency creates an ethereal quality where the architecture appears to dematerialize at key junctures, most notably at the entrance. The building mass simultaneously appears to be both deeply anchored to the slope and floating, allowing the natural landscape to flow seamlessly between exterior and interior spaces. Perhaps the most innovative aspect of the design is the treatment of the roof. Far from being a simple covering, it becomes an accessible, sloping plane that extends the house's narrative and functionality. The diagonal cross-movements animated in the transversal section create a dynamic contrast to the structure's horizontal emphasis, while varying degrees of transparency throughout the building envelope reinforce the architect's vision of a total, unified architectural experience. OODA's intervention transforms what could have been a challenging site constraint into the project's defining feature, demonstrating how contemporary residential architecture can be both transformative and stabilizing, adding tangible quality to its context while maintaining a dialogue with the natural environment. Design Team - OODA, a dynamic architectural practice founded in 2010 in Porto, Portugal, has emerged as a significant force in contemporary architecture through its innovative approach to design and international perspective. The firm was established by Diogo Brito and Rodrigo Vilas-Boas, who brought together their diverse international experiences from London and Rotterdam, creating a practice that bridges local sensibilities with global design thinking. The practice's leadership expanded strategically over the years, with Francisco Lencastre joining in 2011, followed by João Jesus and Julião Pinto Leite in 2018, forming a robust five-partner structure. This collaborative leadership has driven OODA's portfolio to encompass a remarkable range of typologies, from bespoke residential projects to large-scale urban interventions and institutional complexes. Operating from dual headquarters in Matosinhos and Lisbon, OODA has cultivated a diverse team of over 50 professionals from various nationalities, fostering a rich cross-cultural design dialogue. The firm's portfolio, spanning four continents and encompassing over 100 projects in 14 years, demonstrates their versatility in architectural programming and scale.
2025 Previous Next

Project Name: Six Columns House Location: London, United Kingdom Design Team: 31/44 Architects Building Area: 1,640 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photographer: Nick Dearden Special Honor: 2024 RIBA House of the Year Lead Designer: Will Burges Structural Engineering: Price & Myers Main Contractor: Altlant Construction Landscape Architecture: Aarde Feature: Project - Nestled in the leafy suburbs of Crystal Palace, London, the Six Columns House by 31/44 Architects emerges as a masterclass in adaptive, thoughtful design that challenges conventional residential architecture. Named RIBA House of the Year 2024, this bespoke family home is a testament to architectural ingenuity, seamlessly blending personal narrative, contextual sensitivity, and forward-thinking sustainability. Conceived by practice founder Will Burges for his own family, the house is a deliberate departure from static residential design. Situated on a previously undeveloped side garden, the structure navigates complex site constraints—including a protected sycamore tree—with remarkable grace. Its innovative form twists and steps across a trapezoidal plot, creating a dynamic architectural volume that respects both its immediate context and broader urban fabric. The project's design philosophy is revolutionary: a home conceived as an "unfinished" entity, capable of evolving with its inhabitants' changing needs. This approach is manifest in the carefully considered materiality and spatial arrangement. Exposed timber, unpainted pine joinery, and a brutalist palette of spruce paneling and painted brick create a raw, adaptable interior landscape that eschews traditional finish treatments. Sustainability is deeply embedded in the project's DNA. Fully electric and powered by an air-source heat pump, the house produces just 1.78 tonnes of CO2 annually—a fraction of a standard home's carbon footprint. Structural innovations, such as avoiding concrete-piled foundations and using steel screw piles, further demonstrate the architects' commitment to minimizing environmental impact. With its six defining columns and eclectic architectural references—from post-war California Case Study Houses to Le Corbusier's early modern joinery—the Six Columns House transcends mere shelter, becoming a living manifesto of contemporary architectural possibility. Design Team - In the dynamic landscape of contemporary architectural practice, 31/44 Architects emerges as a paradigm of contextual and innovative design, challenging conventional boundaries of urban architectural intervention. Founded in 2010 by Will Burges and Stephen Davies, the London-based practice has distinguished itself through a nuanced approach that meticulously integrates new architectural interventions within existing urban fabrics. With a philosophical commitment to place-making, 31/44 transcends mere building design, crafting architectural narratives that deeply resonate with historical, cultural, and spatial contexts. Their portfolio demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of architectural morphology, where each project becomes a deliberate, considerate contribution to its surrounding environment. The practice's international recognition—including prestigious accolades such as the Manser Medal and RIBA National Awards—underscores their design excellence. Their work has been celebrated across major European cultural capitals, from London to Berlin, reflecting a design language that is both locally sensitive and globally compelling. Led by a multidisciplinary team of chartered architects with diverse academic and professional backgrounds, 31/44 operates with an intellectual rigor that extends beyond physical construction. Their engagement with academic institutions, particularly through teaching studios at Kingston School of Art, ensures a continuous dialogue between theoretical exploration and practical architectural implementation. The Six Columns House, recently crowned RIBA House of the Year 2024, epitomizes their design philosophy—a testament to their ability to transform constraints into architectural opportunities, creating spaces that are simultaneously innovative, sustainable, and profoundly contextual. 2024 Previous Next

The 8,886-square-meter project, completed in 2024, features 115 unique apartments arranged along a 180-meter meandering structure that varies in height from two to seven floors. The building's most striking feature is its conceptual approach to void spaces, where the serpentine form creates a series of carefully orchestrated gardens and communal areas. The facade design evokes the poetic image of a wooden ship inside a glass bottle, achieved through a sophisticated combination of load-bearing concrete walls and horizontally hinged glass panels. This architectural expression is further enhanced by the use of locally sourced Finnish spruce for exterior cladding, balconies, and windows. The project excels in its environmental performance, incorporating sixteen geothermal wells for heating and cooling, alongside radiant floor systems throughout. The extensive green roof, solar array, and rainwater collection systems demonstrate a comprehensive approach to sustainability. Interior spaces are characterized by high windows and private balconies offering views toward either the Baltic Sea horizon or Hesperianpuisto Park. What sets Meander apart is its attention to detail and commitment to artistic integration. Custom elements including door handles, light fixtures, and even cast dog bowls echo the building's meandering form. The project also features unique artworks by Finnish visual artist Fanny Tavastila, created specifically for each resident's home and common areas, establishing a seamless dialogue between architecture and art. Design Team - Steven Holl Architects, established in 1977 in New York City, has evolved into a globally renowned architecture practice with offices in New York, Hudson Valley, and Beijing. Designed by Tati Tavares and Alex Dalcin for a social couple starting their family, the 574 sqm residence optimizes its corner plot to foster shared experiences. Strategic shading devices and operable screens allow abundant natural light without sacrificing views or overheating interiors. Floating beams and slender columns create airy double-height interiors, minimizing visual barriers between the home’s fluid spaces. The open-plan layout connects the living room, dining room and patio through the home’s focal point – a framed view of the surrounding city. Upstairs, an intimate primary suite also enjoys panoramic outlooks from behind adjustable wood slats or full-height glass. Passive solar strategies shape the home’s form. Deep overhangs and vertical brise soleil screens cut harsh western sun along the perimeter, while central skylights pull daylight into core living areas. Lowered plaster ceilings conceal ductwork for centralized cooling that keeps interiors comfortable. Through simple but clever environmental solutions, the Casa do Olhar’s contemporary form harmonizes with its context. The home’s strategic openings, clean lines and tranquil material palette create a serene setting suited to its picturesque locale. Flowing living spaces soaked in diffused light provide a soothing, inspiring backdrop for making memories. Sheppard Robson | Archicasting
Sheppard Robson's 68-86 Farringdon Road marks a bold intervention revitalizing a complex, formerly car park-occupied site in London's eclectic Clerkenwell neighborhood. The mixed-use development harmoniously merges a 180-key hub by Premier Inn hotel with a speculative office building, anchored by activating ground floor retail and public spaces. The two distinct yet connected volumes deftly redefine the linear urban block through an architecturally scaled massing strategy. Taking cues from the proportions of Victorian residential blocks once situated here, a series of interconnected bays articulates the elevations. Towards the northern end, the hotel's height responds contextually to surrounding residences, while gaining stature to address larger-scale office buildings southwards. Material choices imbue each component with its own distinctive personality. The hotel's bronze-toned metal shingle cladding will naturally patina over time to relate to neighboring brick facades. Contrastingly, the office block's cooler zinc skin provides a crisp, modern counterpoint. Across both volumes, folded, sculptural facades create dynamic, transformative surfaces that respond to changing light conditions. An ingenious foundation strategy minimized embedded carbon by retaining existing groundworks, upon which lightweight steel superstructures optimized for acoustics were erected. Environmental responsiveness extends to passive cooling via strategic facade shading. Project Name: Dai 2 Nadeshiko Nursery School Location: Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan Design Team: Kawakubo Tomoyasu Architects Structural Design: Kume Hiroki Structural Engineers Construction: Ishikawa Construction Co., Ltd. Total Floor Area: 1,720.63 m² Site Area: 4,239.29 m² Structure: Reinforced Concrete + Partial Timber Construction Floors: 2 Stories Above Ground Design Period: June 2019 - February 2023 Construction Period: March 2023 - March 2024 Completion: March 2024 Photographer: Sobajima Toshihiro Feature: Project - In the heart of Japan's Kanto Plain, Dai 2 Nadeshiko Nursery School emerges as a thoughtfully designed educational facility that harmoniously blends architectural innovation with environmental consciousness. This newly completed project, accommodating over 200 children, represents a sophisticated response to both pedagogical needs and climatic challenges in Kumagaya, famously known as Japan's hottest city. The building's most striking feature is its distinctive roofline, which poetically mirrors the surrounding mountain ranges visible from the site. From Mount Fuji to Mount Tsukuba, the architectural form creates a visual dialogue with these iconic peaks, embedding the local landscape into the children's daily experience. This design choice transforms the building into a memory-making device, where early childhood experiences are intrinsically linked to the regional geography. The two-story structure employs a hybrid construction system that combines reinforced concrete and timber. The ground floor, housing facilities for children aged 0-2, utilizes robust concrete construction to withstand active play, while the upper level, dedicated to 3-5 year olds, features a more delicate wooden structure. Although fire regulations necessitate covering the complex wooden framework with fire-resistant plasterboard, this combination enables the creation of the building's signature free-form roof. In response to Kumagaya's extreme heat, the architects implemented multiple cooling strategies. The building achieves the highest insulation rating (Grade 4), while external blinds on the second floor provide essential solar control. The design incorporates covered walkways, pilotis, and eaves that create vital shade, complemented by an innovative mist system that leverages evaporative cooling. The facility's relationship with its outdoor spaces is particularly noteworthy. Each classroom maintains a strong connection to the exterior, opening onto a series of thoughtfully designed spaces including a secure courtyard, covered plaza, and open decks that merge with the surrounding rural landscape. This arrangement gives children the freedom to choose their preferred environment while ensuring their safety through careful oversight. Design Team - Founded in 2005, Kawakubo Tomoyasu Architects is a Tokyo-based architectural firm making waves with their innovative residential and commercial projects. Led by principal architect Tomoyasu Kawakubo, a first-class certified architect, the firm's tight-knit team approaches each commission with fresh creative energy. Kawakubo cut his teeth at the renowned Isozaki Arata & Associates before branching out on his own in 2002. His mastery of spatial planning and keen eye for detail shine through in designs that maximize functionality while expressing a distinct aesthetic vision. The firm's residential work, such as the award-winning Kuramae Small House and Nishihara Row Houses, demonstrates an ability to craft highly livable spaces on constrained urban sites. With Kawakubo at the helm, the practice embraces an interdisciplinary approach, often blurring the lines between architecture and product design. This cross-pollination results in compelling environments where customized furniture and fixtures seamlessly integrate with the architectural concepts. Feature: Project - Set atop a hill in Calatagan, Philippines, the striking PK House designed by 8x8 Design Studio serves as a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Filipino Bahay Kubo. The 2400 sqm weekend retreat comprises three cascading volumes that create a tapering pyramidal form, providing shade and framing panoramic views of the surrounding tropical landscape. Anchoring the home is the ground floor Silong, conceived as a fluid communal area with an elongated ironwood dining table at its core. This flows into exterior courtyards and pools, blurring indoor/outdoor boundaries. Cantilevered above is the transparent Bulwagan living pavilion, enveloped in full-height glazing that opens fully via sliding panels. At the top, the private master suite has turnable windows that allow it to become one with the exterior deck. The steel-framed volumes employ overhangs as solar shading devices and are finished with weather-resistant materials to withstand the seaside climate. Inside, bleached wooden surfaces evoke traditional Philippine architecture, offset by contemporary furnishings and sculptural light fixtures. An Inoki soaking tub makes a striking statement in the master bath. Overall, the project translates vernacular influences into a tranquil modern sanctuary that connects with the surrounds. Design Team - Founded in 2012 by partners Adrian Alfonso and Pearl Robles, 8x8 Design Studio is a young architecture firm based in Makati, Philippines dedicated to crafting inspired spatial environments. The name "8x8" stems from the concept of multiplying infinities to develop novel approaches in composing space. Atelier Íchiku | Archicasting
2025 Previous Next

This approximately 200-square-meter space skillfully balances unique architectural forms with natural environmental integration, establishing a distinctive experiential venue that transcends traditional retail design. The design team, using a hip-roof structure as their conceptual foundation, meticulously crafted a space that coordinates with the surrounding environment, where each elevation of the building presents a different visual effect. The project's most striking feature is its innovative treatment of V-shaped incisions - these strategic apertures both showcase interior activities to the outside while drawing the external natural landscape into the interior space. This concept of interior-exterior fusion creates transparency while maintaining spatial integrity. The interior architecture demonstrates a profound understanding of spatial hierarchy, with the roof shape directly reflected in the interior space, creating a dynamic environment where ceiling heights vary from 2 to 5 meters. The design team's careful consideration of customer experience is evident in the visual permeability, allowing customers to appreciate external greenery and sky while selecting eyewear. What distinguishes the JINS Kawajima Inter Store is its successful combination of compact building volume with expansive planted areas. This design both avoids the industrial atmosphere common to surrounding large commercial facilities and provides space for visitor interaction. This project represents a significant achievement in retail design, transforming architecture into an "organism-like" organic presence, creating memorable external focal points while simultaneously developing dynamic and open interior spatial experiences. This is not merely an eyewear store but a vivid lesson demonstrating how thoughtful design can transform everyday retail spaces into meaningful places that dialogue with their environment, establishing new standards for suburban commercial architectural design in Japan. Design Team - Fumiko Takahama Architects, established in April 2012 (initially named +ft+/Takahama Fumiko Architecture Office) and reorganized in October 2024, has developed into one of Japan's innovative architectural design firms, renowned for its unique understanding of spatial composition and environmental integration. This Tokyo-based studio, located in Setagaya Ward and led by principal architects Fumiko Takahama and Tomohiko Komatsu, has gained industry recognition for its skillful fusion of precise spatial analysis with environmental sensitivity. Fumiko Takahama (born 1979) completed her undergraduate studies at Kyoto University before continuing her education at the University of Tokyo Graduate School, where she also studied abroad at ETH Zurich and interned at Christian Kerez and HHF Architects. After obtaining her master's degree in 2007, she worked at the internationally renowned Herzog & de Meuron until 2012, accumulating rich professional experience. Her academic background also includes research positions at Kobe University and the University of Tokyo, as well as teaching positions at Kogakuin University and Shibaura Institute of Technology. Tomohiko Komatsu (born 1989) graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo University of Science and subsequently pursued a master's degree at the University of Tokyo Graduate School. During his studies, he undertook a world tour and interned at Aires Mateus. After obtaining his master's degree in 2015, he worked at Shigeru Ban Architects until 2021, before joining Takahama's studio in 2022 as co-director. The firm focuses on diverse project types regardless of scale and purpose, encompassing new construction, renovation projects, interior design, furniture and lighting design, and urban planning. Their representative works include JINS Holdings Tokyo Headquarters, Christian Dada Singapore, and Giant House in Oiso, demonstrating their sophisticated understanding of spatial composition and material application. The studio's design methodology combines rigorous architectural planning with keen insight into user experience, successfully balancing aesthetic quality with practical functionality. Their innovative understanding of architecture and sensitive attitude toward the environment have established their work in Japan's contemporary architectural field. 2023 Previous Next
NITAPROW | Archicasting
Nestled along a canal in the outskirts of Bangkok, NITAPROW has created a whimsical wonderland for children and adults alike with Little Stove & Little Stump. This dual project comprises a 295 sq.m cafe and a 256 sq.m indoor-outdoor playground, situated on a 4,600 sq.m plot. Taking inspiration from the Thai word "Rom," which means both "umbrella" and "sheltered area," the architects crafted a design language that playfully reinterprets these concepts. The cafe's curving roof and canopy evoke the organic lines of an unfurled umbrella, providing ample shaded outdoor seating that embraces the lush garden surroundings. But it's the adjacent Little Stump playground that truly captures the imagination. Inspired by a children's book, this full-scale architectural interpretation reimagines a hollowed tree stump as an exploratory realm for young minds. Treetrunk-like columns, window "hollows," and undulating forms come together in a seamless indoor-outdoor space anchored by a courtyard "tree." Throughout, thoughtful details cater to youthful sensibilities, from miniature windows and furniture to layered terrazzo walls that beckon curious eyes. More than just a playground, Little Stove & Little Stump fosters an immersive environment where reality and fantasy intertwine, nurturing creativity, learning, and growth through the universal language of play. Founded in 2013 by partners Nita Yuvaboon and Prow Puttorngul, NITAPROW is a Bangkok-based design practice specializing in architecture and interior design.
