Lichtstad Architecten | Archicasting
2025 Previous Next
- WOWK芝公园 PERSIMMON HILLS architects | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Nestled along a narrow street in Tokyo's Minato ward, the WOWK Shiba Koen building by Yusuke Kakinoki + Shuhei Hirooka / PERSIMMON HILLS architects is a refreshing reinterpretation of the conventional office typology. Designed as a rental office pursuing new ways of working befitting our modern society, the architects aimed to foster interaction and craft an architecture that becomes "a new urban landscape." Defying the monotony of stacked, generic floor plates, the daring design strategically positions the emergency stairwell and sculptural massing to disrupt the "standard floor" on each level. This breakdown of boundaries generates unique, characterful spaces with carefully modulated openings, materials, and volumes that respond to daylighting requirements. Inspired by the surrounding urban fabric of small-scale workplaces interwoven with pedestrian pathways, the architects sought to verticalize this appealing integrated work-live environment. By doing so, they crafted a novel workplace experience that poetically bridges old and new contexts - envisioning a future where tightknit teams and individuals can gather, interact dynamically, and shape the city's evolving identity. This ingenious scheme exemplifies how innovative spatial concepts can breathe new life into dense urban areas, making WOWK Shiba Koen a truly pioneering architectural statement. Alexandre Chaguri Arquitetura | Archicasting
2022 Previous Next
OYO Architects | Archicasting
Project Name: Lyco House Location: Pepingen, Belgium Design Team: OYO Architects Total Floor Area: 312 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Karen Van der Biest Feature: Belgian architecture studio OYO Architects completed the Lyco House project in Pepingen, creating a contemporary sustainable home that exemplifies how bold architectural intervention can transform historic barns into modern living spaces. The project is positioned within the green countryside less than 30 kilometers from Brussels, drawing inspiration from Belgium's rural heritage to create an architectural work that both celebrates agricultural building traditions and embodies innovative adaptive reuse strategies. The project's most compelling design feature lies in its strategic spatial reconfiguration through a dramatic triangular cut carved from the original barn volume. Rather than choosing conventional renovation approaches, the architects masterfully created a central courtyard that transforms the previously dark and enclosed space into a light-filled sanctuary. This ingenious triangular intervention not only floods the interior with natural light but also generates fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces while maintaining the traditional barn facade that preserves the building's agricultural character. The building's spatial choreography unfolds through carefully orchestrated levels, mezzanines, and double-height spaces connected by a striking geometric green steel staircase custom-designed by Atelier Manus. This vertical dialogue enhances the sense of spaciousness within the compact footprint, connecting bedrooms with living areas, kitchen with garden, and living room with elevated terrace, effectively blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior environments. The living spaces center around the kitchen, where a large salmon pink island stands out as a bold focal point. The light pine wood ceiling contrasts with polished grey cement floors, while custom-made dark wood furniture by Hout en Interieur adds warmth and craftsmanship. The living room, positioned on a slightly higher level above the kitchen, features a suggestive wooden ceiling and large windows that open onto the outdoor terrace, creating a unique spatial experience. Material selection demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to heritage and innovation. Carefully selected furniture in neutral tones is complemented by chromatic accents in green and terracotta, generating a soft and natural atmosphere in a warm and balanced environment. To ensure thermal comfort, sustainability, and energy efficiency, OYO Architects incorporated ecological and circular materials during construction, completely renovating the old asbestos roof and installing solar panels and other eco-technologies throughout the house. Denis Dujardin's landscape design plays a crucial role in shaping the setting, achieving fluid and respectful integration with the surrounding rural landscape through the use of local vegetation. Additionally, an ingenious and discrete solution has been developed to manage the area's excess rainwater, channeling it into a natural pond where it is purified and gradually filtered into the ground. Lyco House represents a thoughtful adaptive reuse approach, demonstrating how historic agricultural buildings can be transformed to meet contemporary living needs while respecting their original essence and environmental responsibility. Design Team - OYO Architects stands as a distinguished Belgian architectural practice that has established an exceptional reputation in innovative sustainable design. Founded by Nigel Jooren, Eddy Soete, Veroniek Vanhaecke, Lies Willaert, and Ferran Massip in 2011 and based in Ghent and Barcelona, under the creative direction of founding partner Nigel Jooren and design direction of partner Ferran Massip, the firm has developed a reputation for creating innovative solutions across residential, community development, and industrial architecture typologies. OYO Architects brings exceptional multidisciplinary collaborative experience and deep understanding of sustainable building practices to the practice. Under the leadership of founding partners, supported by a 25-person team including designers, architects, urban planners, and consultative specialists, the practice has garnered recognition for its commitment to ecosystem thinking and dedication to craftsmanship. This combination of holistic approach with contemporary design innovation positions OYO Architects uniquely within Europe's architectural landscape. The firm's design philosophy emphasizes that spatial purpose is as important as architectural execution, not rushing to standardized architectural solutions but believing that architecture should be a result of thorough understanding of social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Through intensive collaboration with clients, they define the project's spatial purpose—the positive impact the space should have on those that inhabit it. OYO Architects believes that the best spaces provide the setting for people to be at their best, challenging convention to reveal the true potential of space. Through this thoughtful synthesis of generous homes, thriving communities, and regenerative industry, OYO Architects has established itself as a significant contributor to contemporary architectural discourse, creating architectural works that are both rooted in place and embrace global design vision. 2024 Previous Next
- Veron the Shop商店 IOG Arhitectura | Archicasting
< 返回 Veron the Shop商店 IOG Arhitectura 项目名称:Veron the Shop商店 地点:布加勒斯特,罗马尼亚 设计团队:IOG Arhitectura 建筑面积:22 m² 竣工时间:2024年 摄影:Sabin Prodan 设计特色: 项目 - Veron The Shop位于客户家族所拥有的一座中心建筑的前车库内。 Project Name: Veron the Shop Location: Bucharest, Romania Design Team: IOG Arhitectura Total Floor Area: 22 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Sabin Prodan Feature: Project - Veron The Shop is located in a former garage of a central building owned by the clients' family since its completion. Due to the successive layers of pavement added to the sidewalk and the degradation of the access ramp, the garage remained unused for decades. The client sought to revitalize the unused space by converting it into a small boutique for accessories and fashion items. The 22 sqm space consists of a main room that was intended for parking and a small storage room that, in the proposal, became the fitting room. The challenge was to create a contemporary identity for a small shop that, although street-facing, was not visible to passersby, as it is located in the basement level. The proposal involved fully covering the space with pale pink ceramic tiles, using different formats depending on their placement. The walls were straightened out to accommodate the 10/10 cm format, the floor was tiled with a rectangular format laid in a herringbone pattern, and 5/5 cm tiles were used for the central island and accessory pedestal. The space has a low ceiling height of 230 cm, so to create a heightening effect through reflection, the ceiling was covered with plexiglass in a colour similar to the tiling. To maintain the fluid atmosphere, the metal furniture was detached from the walls. The clothing racks are made of wavy metal bars, with the waves dictating a maximum number of displayed products, thus keeping the space's crisp ambiance. The reception desk is made from a blue metal sheet that wraps around the countertop and is detached from the walls. Even the fitting room is a detached element, consisting of a freestanding mirror ensemble surrounded by a curtain. The only fixed elements remain the central island, covered in 5/5 cm ceramic tiles, and a pedestal for accessories placed near the entrance. The existing visibly deteriorated wooden garage door was not the original one. So for the main entrance, the proposed door replicates the design of the original metal garage door, but using clear glass instead of opaque, to naturally light the interior space and provide street-level visibility. This way, the store becomes a framed picture cut out from the building's facade, contributing to the depth of the street front. When eliminating the destroyed access ramp, a small courtyard was created, framed by the existing garden planters and protected from the sidewalk by using the ground level difference. In this way, the store opens up to the neighbourhood, offering a familiar atmosphere. The main success of the project is the revitalization of an unused space, which, through this intervention, has become part of the local commerce of a vibrant central city neighbourhood.
Project Name: SOLASUNA Hotel Location: Yukuhashi City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan Design Team: axonometric Total Floor Area: 853.40 m² Completion: November 2023 Photography: YASHIRO PHOTO OFFICE, REPOSHA Yuta Nishino Feature: Project - Within a beachfront park in Nagai-hama, Yukuhashi City, Fukuoka Prefecture, architectural firm axonometric has created SOLASUNA, an innovative hotel project. This 853.40-square-meter structure ingeniously resolves the boundary between public and private space, serving as a catalyst for revitalizing this once-thriving but later declined coastal area. The design team, guided by the concept of "gentle integration between park and hotel," creatively expanded the existing wooden walkway into a three-dimensional form, creating a massive stepped structure that envelops the entire building. The most striking feature of this design is its multifunctionality: the steps not only serve as a natural circulation path connecting guest rooms to the sea, but also provide spacious terraces accessible to both hotel guests and park visitors, while simultaneously functioning as a louver system shielding from strong eastern sunlight and moderating views from the park. Viewed from a distance, the entire structure resembles a grand amphitheater facing the ocean. The interior spaces demonstrate a profound understanding of the natural environment, creating fluid transitions between the architecture and the surrounding beachfront park. This two-story steel structure occupies 459.50 square meters within a 5,668.70-square-meter site, successfully balancing the public nature of the park with the privacy of the hotel through its innovative stepped design. What distinguishes SOLASUNA is its creation of a "buffer space belonging to neither park, building, nor nature, yet integrating them all." This transitional zone maintains deliberately fluid and ambiguous identity, making the project not merely occupy its site but transform it, establishing new relationships between public recreation, private accommodation, and natural landscape in a seamless, compelling whole. Design Team - Founded in 2021, axonometric is an innovative architectural design firm based in Fukuoka, led by Principal Architect Kei Sasaki, undertaking diverse projects both within Japan and internationally. Sasaki previously worked at the renowned SOU FUJIMOTO ARCHITECTS, possessing rich professional experience as a first-class architect and guest lecturer at multiple universities. The team consists of a group of talented professionals including Managing Director Kaori Kurakazu, several architects and project managers, who collectively infuse each project with innovative thinking and professional spirit. axonometric's work has received multiple international awards for its unique understanding of space and innovative approaches, including the 2024 DFA Design for Asia Gold Award, Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards (APIDA) Gold Award and Jury's Special Prize, and the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2024 Special Prize. Their design philosophy emphasizes the harmonious coexistence of architecture and environment, balancing practical functionality with aesthetic experience. The firm's growth and expansion reflect its firm commitment to architectural innovation and increasing influence in the industry, bringing new perspectives and possibilities to Japan's contemporary architectural design field. 2023 Previous Next
- GURUGURU SHAKASHAKA盐品店 Torafu Architects | Archicasting
Project:GURUGURU SHAKASHAKA Team:Torafu Architects Size:51.12 m² Location:Tokyo, Japan Feature: Project - In the heart of Tokyo Solamachi, a new culinary destination is redefining the art of seasoning. GURUGURU SHAKASHAKA, a specialty salt shop designed by Torafu Architects, offers a unique blend of retail experience and interactive gastronomy. This 50㎡ corner space, adjacent to its sister store TACHIGUI UMEBOSHI YA, invites patrons to explore the vast world of salt in a setting that is both functional and visually striking. The shop's centerpiece is an expansive L-shaped counter, strategically positioned to welcome visitors from two directions. Here, customers can embark on a sensory journey, creating bespoke salt blends while sampling varieties on blue agar cubes – a nod to the sea's influence on this essential mineral. Behind the counter, a mesmerizing display of 600 blended salts transforms the wall into a library of flavors, facilitating efficient consultations while showcasing the shop's extensive range. The interior's color palette draws inspiration from salt itself, with fixtures adorned in blue-dyed linden plywood, evoking images of crystalline deposits and ocean depths. A playful touch comes in the form of a customized barber sign, reimagined as a rotating centerpiece that highlights original salt blends and related products. Hand-drawn illustrations featuring the store's mascots, "GURUGURU" and "SHAKASHAKA," infuse the space with charm and personality. The design's pièce de résistance is the neon "SHIO" (Salt) sign, which creates a visual dialogue with the "Ume" sign of the neighboring UMEBOSHI shop. This thoughtful detail not only enhances brand recognition but also establishes GURUGURU SHAKASHAKA as a must-visit destination in Tokyo's culinary landscape – a space that is truly worth its salt. Design Team - TORAFU ARCHITECTS, founded in 2004 by Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro, has established itself as a visionary force in the architectural design industry. Vereda Arquitetos | Archicasting
Project Name: House in Praia do Forte Location: Praia do forte, Brazil Design Team: Vereda Arquitetos Total Floor Area: 630 m² Completion: 2023 Photography: Nelson Kon Feature: Project - Vereda Arquitetos has completed the House in Praia do Forte, situated on a 1260 m² flat plot just 300 meters from the beach in Brazil's coastal 'restinga' ecosystem. This 630-square-meter residence employs a longitudinal design that maximizes views of the surrounding protected areas with their unique regional flora. The house is meticulously organized into three independent program blocks: The social block integrates the living room, dining area, and kitchen with the outdoors through retractable glass windows, transforming the space into a large veranda overlooking the pool and solarium; the master bedroom block includes the master bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, with a study room and atelier on the upper floor, each offering opposing views; the third block accommodates additional bedrooms (for the owners' daughters), guest rooms, and service areas, organized over two levels with front and rear property views. These three blocks are connected by a central circulation axis with levels offset by half-flights of stairs. This innovative arrangement means that from the pool level, only half a flight of stairs is needed to reach either the lower or upper levels. The design creates partially sunken lower-level bedrooms that offer a more comfortable and diverse ambiance compared to the upper-level accommodations, while the intermediate-level social block provides expanded views and convenient access. The construction employs a layered material strategy: a base of local natural stone forms the solarium, pool, entrance gardens, and retaining walls; a reinforced concrete structure built upon this stone base consists of six 3-meter-high concrete walls that define the program blocks and extend beyond interior spaces to form gardens; these 20-centimeter-thick walls with exposed concrete finish support upper-floor slabs, facade planters, and a central rainwater collection gutter; the final layer comprises wooden roofs and shading louvers, with shingle roof planes directing rainwater to the central gutter. As a contemporary contribution to the coastal landscape of Mata de São João, this beach house demonstrates Vereda Arquitetos' excellent balance of environmental sensitivity and architectural innovation. Design Team - Founded in 2013, Vereda Arquitetos develops architectural projects that combine inventive capacity, constructive viability, sustainability, and architectural excellence through a rigorous and attentive project development process. The studio views architecture as an activity that can contribute to the advancement of knowledge; recognizing that despite the scale and complexity of our cities, architecture still plays a fundamental role in their production, especially through its symbolic role and the construction of ideas. Vereda Arquitetos is based in São Paulo and undertakes projects across diverse fields, from furniture design to larger architectural projects. Its architects maintain strong academic engagement, understanding this participation as fundamental to the intellectual production of the studio and as a way to contribute to the formation of new architects and the advancement of the discipline. Through both intellectual and built project production, Vereda aims to contribute to the transformation of cities: to make them places of full personal realization and expression of our best collective ideals. The studio is led by founding partner João Paulo Meirelles de Faria, who graduated from the University of São Paulo's Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU USP) in 2002, obtained a Master's degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2012, and is currently pursuing doctoral studies at FAU USP (2023-2026). He has taught Architecture and Urbanism courses at Escola da Cidade and São Judas University. The team includes architect Bruno Manso, who graduated from São Judas Tadeu University (USJT) in 2017, earned a Master's degree from FAU USP in 2022, and has collaborated with Vereda since 2015, becoming an associate in 2022. This integration of academia and practice creates a productive tension in Vereda's work, where each project becomes a vehicle for intellectual inquiry while remaining grounded in architectural pragmatism. The studio's design philosophy aims to transform cities into spaces that express collective ideals while fostering personal fulfillment through thoughtful architectural interventions. 2023 Previous Next
June Architects | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Set amidst the bustling urban environment of Seongnam-si, South Korea, the Pangyo Two Courtyards House by June Architects adeptly balances a connection to nature with privacy. The 297 sqm residence orchestrates a sculptural composition of graceful concrete forms which carve out two sunken courtyards. One courtyard sits opposite the entrance, unfolding an expansive double-height void which floods the home with natural light. The other nestles intimately alongside the living spaces. At the heart of the home is the central courtyard’s eight-and-a-half-metre tall wall constructed from a closed form concrete that offers a bold and expansive backdrop. This grand and lofty courtyard stitches together the split-level home, serving as a unifying locale where inhabitants can gather. The adjoining courtyard provides a more sheltered, private garden, sunk into the ground plane. Along its perimeter, textured concrete partitions rise up, elegantly curating views and filtering daylight into the home’s communal living areas via irregular voids. The thoughtful layout provides convenience by grouping the kitchen and laundry while still allowing for privacy in the personal quarters. By tempering external visibility via considered materiality and orientations, the Pangyo House delivers the dynamism of connection with nature alongside a refined intimacy. Design Team - Established in 2012, June Architects is led by Principal Architect 김현석, an award-winning architect recognized for his creative and responsive designs. Kim brings over a decade of international experience, having studied and practiced in France as well as South Korea. His distinguishable aesthetic balances sculptural forms with an overarching order to create spaces that are powerful yet elegant. As a firm seeking meaning and identity within architecture, June Architects pursues designs attuned to locale and context. They infuse spaces with light and connection to nature while providing convenience and comfort for inhabitants. Past projects like the Pyeong Chang Dong Brick House showcase their ability to modernize traditional forms through materiality and layout. Guided by the energy of June, the namesake month symbolizing life and growth, the firm continues to create meaningful designs through their skilled architects. June Architects upholds clever solutions that address user needs and environmental factors to provide enjoyable, sustainable buildings. Previous Next
SPACE DOT | Archicasting
Project Name: MAY DAY CAFE Location: Yeoju-si, South Korea Design Team: SPACE DOT Total Floor Area: 330 m² Completion: 2022 Photography: Courtesy of SPACE DOT Feature: Project - SPACE DOT transformed a site in the historic village of Taepyeong-ri, Yeoju into May Day Cafe. Completed in 2022, the project fully embodies the core philosophy of providing "complete rest" spaces for urban dwellers. Taepyeong-ri has historically been a place where scholars traveling to Hanyang for civil service examinations would pause to rest, named for its peaceful and harmonious energy. The design of May Day Cafe began with a clear concept: creating a space that could "embrace the sky." The architects were inspired by a towering cedar tree named "Owol-i" (May) at the center of the site, whose form—branching skyward from a single trunk into two arms—directly influenced the cafe's twin-building configuration. The architects positioned Building A to house the kitchen and staff areas, while Building B opens panoramically through floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides, offering unobstructed views of the mountain ridgeline. The core highlight of the project is its sensitive response to the site's disrupted topography from development. To conceal the incongruous retaining walls created by construction, Building A was strategically arranged as a screen, while Building B, positioned at the village's highest point, maximizes connection with the natural landscape. The architects chose stone and wood as primary materials—elements once native to the land—as a gesture of homage to the nature lost to development. In terms of material selection, the architects deliberately chose elements that echo the site's original natural state. Stone and wood finishes serve not only as aesthetic choices but also as environmental memorials. Tranquil reflecting pools on either side of the building capture the ever-changing colors of the sky as they shift with wind, while a large window beneath the grand roof fully frames the sky and scenery of Taepyeong-ri, and lower side windows bring in natural light that transforms with the seasons. The lighting design emphasizes the seasonal variations of natural light, with the interplay of warm timber and overall white spatial voids creating a soothing and serene atmosphere. The central cedar "Owol-i" serves not only as the source of design inspiration but also becomes a key element symbolizing the cafe's identity—a space providing May-like warmth, comfort, and stability for rest. By combining cultural memory, natural inspiration, and contemporary architectural design, SPACE DOT created a modern sanctuary that transcends traditional commercial spaces, authentically expressing a contemporary interpretation of Korea's traditional rest stops, providing a place of tranquility and restoration for weary urban travelers. Design Team - SPACE DOT was established in 2021 by Seungwon Lee and Kyung Il Kim. The firm specializes in hospitality and commercial architecture design, known for its unique understanding of spatial fundamentalism—believing that architecture begins with individual points that aggregate into lines, surfaces, and ultimately cohesive spatial experiences. The firm's representative works demonstrate their commitment to contextually responsive design, gaining international recognition within just a few years, including the UNESCO Prix Versailles 2024 for Restaurants, the iF Design Award 2025 in Interior Architecture (one of the world's top three design awards), and the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2024 Asia-Café category. Under the continued leadership of Seungwon Lee and Kyung Il Kim, SPACE DOT has established its position among Korea's emerging architectural practices. The firm's design methodology transcends conventional aesthetic considerations, prioritizing sensory and emotional engagement while maintaining functional performance. They demonstrate particular expertise in adaptive site strategies, material authenticity, and biophilic design integration. SPACE DOT's creative philosophy emphasizes that each project should carry unique brand narratives, combining the cultural significance of place with contemporary functional requirements. They believe space is the art form closest to our lives, therefore committed to creating architectural experiences that not only impress visually but also resonate with users on sensory and emotional levels. 设计团队: RAD+ar(Research Artistic Design + architecture)是一家印度尼西亚建筑事务所,将设计定位为对空间、文化和可持续性的挑战性探索。 2025 Previous Next
Project Name: Awaji Island Dog Villa Location: Awaji Island, Hyogo, Japan Design Team: 1110 Architectural Design Office Total Floor Area: 185.49㎡ Completion: November 2024 Photography: Yohei Sasakura Feature: Project - Nestled in a developing area of Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture, the Dog Villa by 1110 Architectural Design Office emerges as a masterful exercise in balancing privacy with natural connectivity. Spanning 185.49 square meters, this contemporary vacation rental challenges traditional notions of inward-facing architecture through an innovative "weakened courtyard house" concept. The project's core philosophy revolves around finding equilibrium within uncertain surroundings, neither rejecting nor uncritically accepting the changing landscape. Architect Hiroto Kawaguchi has crafted a dwelling that functions not merely as a residence but as a mediator between interior and exterior environments. The villa arranges variously sized rooms in a "necklace-like" configuration that encircles a central dog-friendly courtyard, creating a spatial experience that is both protected and connected to the surrounding vistas. Innovative sustainability is evident in the exterior choices. Responding to strong coastal winds and salt damage, the design employs seamless roof-wall construction using salt-resistant galvanized steel panels. Its reddish-brown facade harmonizes with the traditional Awaji streetscape, while visible cedar interior elements respond to the nearby park greenery and distant mountain scenery. The interior is characterized by gentle skip floors that gradually elevate living spaces, diminishing the impact of road traffic while creating interconnected zones where humans and dogs can naturally coexist. Rather than conforming to existing topography, the villa shaped the landscape itself, creating a gentle hill within the courtyard using excavated soil that perfectly aligns with interior levels. More than just a vacation house, the Awaji Island Dog Villa is a meditation on how contemporary architecture can coexist harmoniously with nature—a modern sanctuary that allows inhabitants to maintain privacy while establishing profound connections with Awaji Island's varied natural scenery. Design Team - Founded in 2017 by Hiroto Kawaguchi and formally established in March 2018, 1110 Architectural Design Office has rapidly emerged as one of Japan's most thoughtful architectural practices. Project Name: Kunitachi Terrace Location: Kunitachi, Tokyo, Japan Design Team: Tomoyuki Kurokawa Architects Total Floor Area: 458.65 m² Completion: June 2024 Photography: Yasuhiro Nakayama Design Feature: Project - Located in Kunitachi, Tokyo, the Kunitachi Terrace project represents a revolutionary cooperative housing concept meticulously designed by Tomoyuki Kurokawa Architects. Comprising six townhouse-style units, the project redefines collective living spaces through an innovative garden network. Situated in a historic residential district developed during the Taisho era, the project strategically addresses the diminishing spatial richness of the neighborhood. The architects envisioned a dynamic living system, intricately weaving residential units together through four distinct garden typologies: a communal courtyard surrounding the residences, private gardens created by the building's folded exterior, elevated personal terraces, and roof gardens offering graduated levels of privacy and interaction. These spaces are more than aesthetic additions—they are active living environments that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, private and collective. By adopting a cooperative housing model, the architects transformed potential limitations into opportunities, enabling residents to actively participate in designing and maintaining shared spaces, creating what the designers describe as a "living common." The project's architectural flexibility is particularly noteworthy. Instead of imposing a rigid design, the architects established guiding principles allowing gardens and living spaces to evolve organically. Cross-mezzanine layouts ensure each unit has a unique relationship with its surrounding environment, making residents active participants in shaping their living landscape. Design Team - Founded in 2012 by Tomoyuki Kurokawa, the practice has emerged as a distinctive voice in contemporary Japanese architectural design. Kurokawa, a graduate of Tokyo Institute of Technology, brings extensive international design experience from prestigious practices including Takkenaka Corporation, Herzog & de Meuron, and Kengo Kuma's Urban Design Office. The firm is renowned for its expertise in residential, institutional, and public space design, continuously pushing the boundaries of contemporary Japanese architectural discourse. Kurokawa's design philosophy seamlessly integrates structural innovation with environmental responsiveness, earning multiple accolades in architectural competitions, including Good Design Awards and notable nominations. 2024 Previous Next
Project Name: Fuku Auberge Location: Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, Japan Design Team: Kengo Kuma & Associates Total Floor Area: 198.95 m² Completion: March 2025 Photography: Keishin Horikoshi/SS Feature: Kengo Kuma & Associates has unveiled the remarkable Fuku Auberge in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, a transformative project that challenges traditional minka renovation typology through innovative restoration approaches. Located in the heart of Hizen-Hamashuku, a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, this restaurant and accommodation complex for sake brewery Fukuchiyo represents a bold reimagining of historic architecture regeneration. The building's most distinctive feature lies in its ingenious integration of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design concepts, seamlessly transforming the century-old minka into a contemporary space that embodies the spirit of "Nabeshima" sake. This design strategy directly responds to the site's inherent historical context—through a unified design language that simultaneously respects traditional architectural heritage and meets modern functional requirements, challenging conventional ryokan architectural conventions. Under the leadership of architect Kengo Kuma, this project exemplifies the firm's commitment to reinterpreting Japanese traditional architectural typology, a typology that carries profound cultural significance and craft traditions. The auberge transcends the limitations of typical accommodation architecture, integrating dining and lodging functions within a unified programmatic framework, creating spaces that serve client needs while promoting cultural experiences. The interior design creates ethereal visual effects through lighting fixtures crafted using traditional kumiko techniques, these luminaires appear to float randomly throughout each floor, both echoing traditional craftsmanship and embodying contemporary spatial aesthetics—elements that are core to both Nabeshima brand identity and Japanese cultural heritage. This design approach reinforces the building's role as a bridge connecting past and present, tradition and modernity. The completed 198.95-square-meter auberge marks a pivotal moment in traditional architecture regeneration, while establishing new benchmarks for Japanese historic building preservation and adaptive reuse. The project demonstrates how design can create bold forward-thinking environments while respecting historical context, inspiring the fusion of cultural heritage and innovation. This architectural achievement positions Fuku Auberge as a catalyst for future cultural tourism development, proving that historic buildings can be both functionally sophisticated and aesthetically captivating. Dimster Architecture | Archicasting
Project Name: Ashland Residence Location: Santa Monica, United States Design Team: Dimster Architecture Project Area: 669㎡ (7,202 ft²) Completion Year: 2023 Photography: Courtesy of Dimster Architecture Feature: Project - In the heart of Santa Monica, where coastal breezes meet urban sophistication, Dimster Architecture has unveiled their latest residential masterpiece - the Ashland Residence. This 7,202-square-foot dwelling stands as a testament to thoughtful California modernism, where architecture becomes a dialogue between privacy and openness, form and function. The residence's most striking feature is its innovative L-shaped configuration, a strategic response to its privileged corner lot position. This architectural gesture creates a deliberate duality: a protective shield from the street-facing sides while opening generously to private garden spaces and the coveted afternoon light. The building's mass, split between two distinct structures, is softened by sculptural curved carvings that add a layer of visual poetry to its contemporary form. At the heart of the design lies a sunken living room, where 10-foot sliding doors dissolve the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. This thoughtful element serves a dual purpose - facilitating natural ventilation while creating seamless connections to the meticulously landscaped gardens. The architects have employed a sophisticated rainscreen system for the wood siding, demonstrating their commitment to both aesthetics and functionality. This technical solution creates an air gap that serves as a thermal buffer, acoustic barrier, and ensures the longevity of the natural materials. The home's circulation has been carefully choreographed through two distinct entry experiences. The formal approach guides visitors through a garden of native plants, while a more casual side entrance, nestled between the two main volumes under a trellised canopy, offers a transitional journey to either the kitchen or the pool area. Interior spaces are designed with remarkable flexibility, accommodating everything from grand entertaining to intimate family gatherings, with the potential for future multi-generational living thoughtfully integrated into the plan. The upper level, accessed via an elegantly screened staircase, houses a master suite that spans the building's width, while secondary bedrooms are positioned to capture unique treetop vistas. Throughout the project, a harmonious material palette creates a sense of calm and continuity, reinforcing the home's connection to its coastal California context. Design Team - Founded in 2001, Dimster Architecture has established itself as a distinguished architectural practice known for its sophisticated minimalist approach and contextual sensitivity. Led by Don Dimster, a second-generation architect whose architectural lineage and academic excellence - from USC to Yale - has shaped the firm's philosophical foundation, the practice brings a refined perspective to contemporary architecture. The firm's design ethos, influenced by Don's formative years working alongside European modernist masters, particularly under the mentorship of Oswald Matias Ungers in Germany and Vienna, manifests in projects that celebrate spatial clarity and material authenticity. This international experience, combined with deep California roots, enables Dimster Architecture to create works that resonate with both global design currents and local sensibilities. The practice has garnered significant recognition, notably through Don's own Venice residence, which received the 2013 AIA Award for Excellence in Architecture. The firm's portfolio spans residential, commercial, and cultural projects, each characterized by rigorous attention to tectonics and programmatic innovation. Their integrated design approach encompasses not only architectural services but extends to bespoke furniture design and comprehensive interior solutions. Operating from their Los Angeles base, Dimster Architecture's methodology emphasizes site-specific responses and sustainable strategies, resulting in buildings that demonstrate exceptional spatial quality while addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
事务所于2011年正式注册为建筑设计有限公司,由创始合伙人建筑师Jean Baptiste Barache(巴黎马拉凯建筑学院,1998年毕业)和Sihem Lamine(巴黎特殊建筑学院,2002年毕业),以及合伙建筑师Alexandre Simon(巴黎维莱特建筑学院,2017年毕业)领导。 2024 Previous Next
Ediz Demirel Works | Archicasting
Project Name: Cabin in the Woods Location: Kozak, Turkey Design Team: Ediz Demirel Works Total Floor Area: 54 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Egemen Karakaya Design Features: Project - Turkish architect Ediz Demirel has created a striking 54-square-metre cabin on the remote Kozak Plateau that demonstrates how contemporary architecture can both challenge and complement its natural setting. Located on a hill near Pergamon, this short-term rental retreat exemplifies thoughtful minimal intervention through its bold juxtaposition of contrasting materials and construction approaches. The project's most distinctive feature is its sunken "conversation pit" – a contemporary take on the traditional gathering space that sits embedded within the landscape's existing topography. This lowered central core serves as the heart of the cabin, where guests can gather around a fire while experiencing the space from multiple perspectives. Above this grounded element, a tent-like steel shell appears to float, creating a dramatic formal tension between the earthbound and the elevated. Demirel's design strategy revolves around the interplay of opposing tectonic languages. The foundation builds upon existing dry stone terrace walls from an old vineyard, using reinforced concrete poured in-situ to create continuity with the terrain. In stark contrast, the Corten steel cladding and structural steel frame were prefabricated off-site, representing an industrial intervention that consciously stands apart from its rural context. The cabin's sculptural qualities are enhanced by strategic apertures that puncture the metal shell. A horizontal cut frames panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, while protruding openings create "eye-like" moments that mediate between interior and exterior spaces. These carefully choreographed views establish visual connections to the site while maintaining the structure's bold architectural identity. The structural steel system, detached from the topography, and the Corten steel façade panels are prefabricated in the workshop, with only their assembly carried out on-site. The reinforced dry stone wall that serves as the foundation is intentionally complemented with the existing, irregular arrangement of stones in the terrain. The in-situ reinforced concrete foundation is poured into it, creating a seamless connection between building and site. The foundation and the conversation pit act as a continuation of the topography, allowing users to form a direct connection with the land and grounding the structure in its context. In contrast, the tent-like steel shell that floats above this base stands in opposition to the landscape through its form and materiality. Ultimately, the identity of the structure is shaped by the interplay of two opposing tectonic approaches in terms of materials, construction techniques, production methods, and the contrast between locality and foreignness. Design Team - Ediz Demirel Works (EDWorks), founded in 2022 by architect Ediz Demirel, has rapidly established itself as an innovative practice specializing in small to medium-scale architectural interventions that synthesize traditional building techniques with contemporary spatial concepts. Under Demirel's direction, the firm demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of material authenticity and site-specific design responses. Demirel's architectural foundation was established through his 2019 award-winning graduation project from Istanbul Technical University's Department of Architecture, followed by specialized experience in natural building methodologies. His formative period included intensive work with vernacular materials—particularly natural plaster applications and earth-adobe construction techniques—across hospitality and residential typologies in Bodrum. This hands-on expertise with traditional craft informed his design philosophy of material honesty and contextual sensitivity. The practice's design methodology reflects Demirel's multidisciplinary background, encompassing architectural visualization, interior architecture, and furniture production through strategic collaborations, notably with OoL Studio for international projects. EDWorks' portfolio demonstrates particular strength in adaptive renovation strategies and new construction that responds thoughtfully to topographical constraints. The recently completed Cabin in the Woods project exemplifies the firm's integrated design-build approach, where Demirel served as both architect and contractor. This dual role enables precise material detailing and construction quality control while maintaining design integrity throughout the building process. The practice continues to expand its expertise through educational initiatives, conducting architectural model-making workshops at academic institutions, reinforcing its commitment to pedagogical engagement within the architectural community. 2025 Previous Next
In the picturesque LUXELAKES area of Chengdu, China, DL atelier has completed an enigmatic new children's museum that evokes the sculptural forms of icebergs. The Dotsss Children's Museum comprises a cluster of simple cubic volumes, united beneath a dramatic draped membrane that billows overhead. The architects liken the design to the vast majority of an iceberg's mass lying unseen beneath the water's surface. The pristine white tensile membrane softens the cuboid forms into an indistinct, fluid form that shifts with changing light and viewpoints. This immense fabric veil conceals the building's mechanical equipment on the rooftops, creating a seamless, sculptural exterior. Beneath the draped canopy, the exhibition halls are conceived as flexible, open-plan spaces that can adapt to diverse installations and experiences over time. These simple box-like volumes are left with minimal interior detailing to prioritize future adaptability. Outdoor courtyards and soaring atrium spaces connect the galleries, enabling free-flowing circulation tailored to children's explorative tendencies. Large windows dissolve the boundaries between interior and exterior, extending the exhibition spaces outwards and drawing the surrounding landscapes inwards as scenery to be observed. The result is a museum design that stays malleable and open-ended – providing young visitors with an engaging, transformative spatial experience akin to uncovering the mysteries of an iceberg. Founded in 2012 by principals Liu Yang and Xu Dan, DL atelier is a Beijing-based architectural design firm with a passionate vision.
