Rather than compromising on the design when faced with soaring material costs, the architects turned limitation into innovation by removing half of the planned second floor. This strategic reduction resulted in a unique architectural form resembling a periscope or vintage camera with an accordion bellows, setting the house apart from typical residential additions. The 122-square-metre home's most striking feature is its sophisticated interplay of volumes and light. Three clearstory windows, positioned at intervals along the stepped ceiling, work in concert with a front bay window to create dynamic natural lighting conditions throughout the day. The mixed-use development harmoniously merges a 180-key hub by Premier Inn hotel with a speculative office building, anchored by activating ground floor retail and public spaces. The two distinct yet connected volumes deftly redefine the linear urban block through an architecturally scaled massing strategy. Taking cues from the proportions of Victorian residential blocks once situated here, a series of interconnected bays articulates the elevations. Towards the northern end, the hotel's height responds contextually to surrounding residences, while gaining stature to address larger-scale office buildings southwards. Material choices imbue each component with its own distinctive personality. The hotel's bronze-toned metal shingle cladding will naturally patina over time to relate to neighboring brick facades. Contrastingly, the office block's cooler zinc skin provides a crisp, modern counterpoint. These generational image memories have crystallized into the family's character, establishing an emotional and nostalgic foundation for this 600-square-meter architectural space—a unique temperament weaving together the new and the old. The project's most distinctive design feature lies in its innovative response to existing site constraints. The original building was enclosed by high walls with a central courtyard serving as the sole light source, trapping most interior spaces in shadow. Facing vertical development limitations, the architects employed a horizontal layering strategy, introducing five courtyards of varying scales. Atelier About Architecture's design philosophy centers on establishing "a new spatial system submerged beneath tall enclosing walls." Both large and small courtyards can be viewed and traversed, creating visual connections between different spatial units regardless of one's position, perfectly echoing the daily life of a multigenerational household.
