While permeable northern façade invites verdant views and breezes, insulated southern flank averts summertime heat gain. At the heart lies a soaring double-height interior courtyard sealed by translucent polycarbonate roofs that flood the space with dappled sunlight. Reminiscent of a Victorian conservatory, this flexible venue accommodates lounging, reading nooks and children’s play areas amidst enveloping greenery. Strategically placed solar shading and operable skylights allow occupants to modulate light and ventilation. The Tenjincho Place Apartment Complex features a curved volume wrapped around a central courtyard, ensuring each residential unit benefits from ample light, air, and views despite being surrounded by high-rise buildings on three sides. To prevent the courtyard from becoming a dark, neglected space, the architects implemented several clever strategies. They minimized corridors following the courtyard's contours, converted some into two-storey maisonettes, and added side openings to allow light and air to flow in. The standout feature is the abundance of spacious, covered terraces that transform the facade into a vertical garden. These outdoor spaces articulate areas for learning and leisure that can be used year-round, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. Classrooms alternate with open niches, and each classroom cluster has direct access to its own sheltered terrace, allowing children to playfully discover their school's nooks and crannies. At the heart of the all-day school, a soaring atrium with reflective bridge elements instills a sense of movement and discovery. This central orientation hub connects all levels to the inviting outdoor terraces. Even interior spaces like the library offer views to the verdant school garden through full-height glazing. On breaks, pupils can quickly escape to the gardens via large stairs and even a slide from upper floors.
