2025 Previous Next
Kadre Architects | Archicasting
Feature: Project - In the sun-scorched expanse of Lancaster, California, a remarkable transformation has taken place. The Sierra, a groundbreaking project by Kadre Architects, has reimagined a formerly blighted motel complex into a vibrant community for families transitioning out of homelessness. This innovative development, commissioned by Hope the Mission, showcases how thoughtful design can breathe new life into neglected spaces. The 4-acre site now houses 38 transitional housing units, each enhanced by a striking solar porch that doubles the living area. These latticed structures create a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, offering both visual interest and practical shelter from the harsh desert sun. The architects' ingenuity in expanding cramped motel rooms demonstrates a keen understanding of spatial economics and resident comfort. Kadre Architects, in collaboration with landscape firm TerreMoto, have transformed asphalt expanses into lush, permeable grounds. Colorful meandering pathways, inspired by Brice Marden's artwork, weave through the site, unifying disparate elements into a cohesive whole. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also addresses crucial environmental concerns by allowing rainwater to replenish the aquifer. The Sierra stands as a testament to the power of design in fostering community and dignity. By relegating parking to the rear and prioritizing pedestrian-friendly spaces, the project creates a true sense of place. High-albedo paint on necessary hard surfaces and strategically placed shade structures combat the desert heat, while vibrant colors throughout the campus inject energy and optimism into every corner. This project exemplifies how adaptive reuse, coupled with sensitive design, can transform not just buildings, but lives. The Sierra offers more than just shelter; it provides a foundation for hope and renewal in the high desert of Los Angeles County. 2025 Previous Next
In the heart of Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, a remarkable transformation has breathed new life into an abandoned mountain village. The "Auberge in a Vanishing Village" project, designed by Motose Saita Architects, reimagines a deserted settlement as a cutting-edge culinary destination and boutique lodging experience. Perched on a peninsula-like cliff carved by a river, the site offers breathtaking views along the valley. The architects have masterfully integrated the new structures with the existing landscape, preserving ancient stone walls and utilizing the natural topography to create a harmonious blend of old and new. The project's standout feature is its innovative approach to extreme weather conditions. With snowfall exceeding 3 meters, the dining area and its approach are elevated to the second floor, ensuring unobstructed views year-round while maintaining the village's modest scale. The cottage accommodations, arranged in a dispersed layout, pay homage to the original settlement pattern and allow guests to immerse themselves in the surrounding flora and snow-covered scenery. Sustainability and local integration are at the core of this design. The architects have incorporated traditional roof elements like "yukiwari" (snow-splitting components) and repurposed materials from existing houses. In a nod to local practices, the project utilizes mountain stream water, collaborating with residents to maintain this heritage. This visionary project revitalizes a forgotten village and creates a unique destination where avant-garde cuisine meets traditional Japanese mountain life, offering a model for sustainable rural rejuvenation. Founded in 2015, Motose Saita Architects (本瀬齋田建築設計事務所) has quickly established itself as a pioneering force in Japan's architectural landscape. - Gabrielle-Roy图书馆 GLCRM Architectes | Archicasting
Project Name: Gabrielle-Roy Library Location: Quebec City, Canada Design Team: GLCRM Architectes, Saucier + Perrotte architectes Total Floor Area: 10,456 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Olivier Blouin Feature: Project - In Quebec City's vibrant Saint-Roch neighborhood, the Gabrielle-Roy Library by GLCRM Architectes and Saucier + Perrotte architectes radically reimagines the traditional library typology. This 10,456-square-meter renovation and extension transforms the institution from a quiet repository of books into a dynamic social hub engaging directly with its urban context. The design's most compelling strategy lies in its vertical programming philosophy, which strategically distributes public functions across multiple levels, creating what the architects describe as "a rich path oscillating between projection and introversion." Each floor offers distinct experiences and relationships with both the collections and the surrounding cityscape. At street level, the architects have established a seamless connection between interior and exterior public space through a generous outdoor area, reinforcing the library's urban character and inviting community engagement. The ground floor houses family-oriented collections alongside versatile spaces including a culinary workshop kitchen and amphitheater. The building's materiality tells its own narrative: clear glass on the ground and second floors emphasizes public accessibility, while fritted glass on the first and third levels creates diaphanous screens filtering natural light for environments conducive to focused reading and learning. Most distinctive is the second floor's striking mesh ceiling, which unifies diverse programming including music studios, practice rooms, a projection space, and maker facilities. The central atrium functions as both organizational device and light source, around which collections spanning literature, philosophy, sciences, arts, and technology are thoughtfully arranged. This vertical connectivity creates a journey through knowledge domains while maximizing natural illumination and offering uplifting vistas throughout the building. Through these interventions, the design team has crafted a cultural institution that responds dynamically to its community's evolving relationship with information, learning, and public space, transforming the library into what the architects call "a true 'third place'" adapted to contemporary community needs. Design Team - Established in Quebec City in 1974, GLCRM Architectes has evolved over nearly five decades into one of the region's most respected architectural practices, defined by its commitment to contextual design excellence and collaborative methodologies. Under the leadership of Marc Letellier and a distinguished team of design principals, the firm has cultivated a portfolio spanning institutional, cultural, and civic projects that respond sensitively to their environments while pushing programmatic boundaries. With approximately fifty architects and specialists in urban design, interior architecture, and sustainable development, the firm maintains ISO 9001 certification, reflecting their rigorous approach to project delivery. Their technical expertise is particularly evident in complex institutional works like the Centre régional intégré de Cancérologie at Hôtel-Dieu de Lévis, which earned recognition from the Ordre des architectes du Québec. The firm's competition-winning designs, including the Reception Pavilion of Quebec's National Assembly (recognized with a Canadian Architect Award of Excellence in 2016), demonstrate their ability to navigate the intersection of historic context and contemporary architectural expression—balancing civic presence with human-scale spatial experiences that have defined GLCRM's practice philosophy since its inception. 2024 Previous Next

In the heart of Tokyo's Koto Ward, a remarkable renovation project breathes new life into urban living. The " Fukagawa Housing," masterfully reimagined by Ryo Kamamatsu of note architects, offers a fresh perspective on compact city dwelling. This thoughtful redesign of an apartment in a high-rise complex showcases an innovative approach to creating a harmonious family space within the constraints of urban architecture. The project's standout feature is its ingenious use of "semi-transparent boundaries" to delineate different areas within the home. By employing varied flooring materials and strategic placement of custom-built columns and glass doors, Kamamatsu has crafted a living space that allows family members to sense each other's presence while maintaining a sense of individual territory. A key element of the design is the carefully positioned counter that runs along the perimeter walls. This architectural decision serves a dual purpose: it directs the occupants' attention outwards, fostering a connection with the natural world beyond the apartment's confines, while also creating functional zones that respond to the changing quality of light throughout the day. The materials chosen for the interiors further enhance the project's ethos. Textured surfaces such as washi-papered walls, tiled kitchen areas, and persimmon-tannin-treated lauan wood not only add visual interest but also interact beautifully with light, creating an ever-changing ambiance that reflects the passage of time and seasons. By opening up sightlines from the entrance and washroom areas to the balcony, the architects have ensured that a sense of the outdoors permeates every corner of the home. This design strategy effectively blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior, allowing residents to feel constantly connected to the urban landscape beyond. The Fukagawa Housing stands as a testament to the possibility of creating a nature-infused, family-centric living space within the dense urban fabric of Tokyo. It offers a nuanced reinterpretation of traditional Japanese spatial concepts, adapted for modern city life. Founded in 2016 by Ryo Kamamatsu, note architects has rapidly emerged as a pioneering force in Tokyo's architectural landscape. 2024 Previous Next

Feature: Project - Material Waltz is an apartment renovation in Setagaya, Tokyo designed by Akaike Kazuhito of ARED Architects. Taking inspiration from the creative process behind waltz compositions, the architects sought to express the "dance of decoration" within renovation design. They viewed the existing rules of the apartment as a "musical score" and constructed a new “sheet music” along “skewed spatial axes”, treating materials as “musical notes” and giving them form beyond function. The 22 degree angle spatial axes pay respect to and organize the elements inside and outside the building, creating a unified yet non-monotonic atmosphere with its own unique personality - one where floorplans and arrangements take on musical rhythm and harmony. Beyond functionalism and aesthetics, the architects hoped to appeal to visitors’ emotions and experiences through this musical approach. They gave the materials, viewed collectively as “notes”, distinct “personalities” with whimsical designs that convey more than just modern practicality. The old and new materials assert themselves within the one-room space, crossing brightly like dancers waltzing to the inevitable beats of morning, day and night. Design Team - ARED ARCHITECTS was founded in 2023 by Akaike Kazuhito, the Managing Director and a first-class architect. With professional experience at both top contractors and design studios, he is highly versed in architectural designs ranging from small houses to large complexes, and everything from innovative concepts to solid details. Vanceva World of Color Awards Previous Next
MU Architecture | Archicasting
Project Name: La Flèche Residence Location: Mont-Tremblant, Canada Design Team: MU Architecture Total Floor Area: 7977 ft² (741 m²) Completion: 2023 Photography: Raphaël Thibodeau Feature: Canadian architecture studio MU Architecture completed the La Flèche Residence project in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, creating a dramatic mountain retreat that ingeniously transforms challenging steep terrain into an extraordinary living experience. The project is positioned within the naturally rich landscape of the Laurentian forest, drawing inspiration from Canada's harsh climate conditions to create an architectural work that both celebrates regional building traditions and embodies contemporary design innovation. The project's most compelling design feature lies in its sophisticated response to a dramatically steep mountainside site---the architects masterfully handled the topographical constraints by creating a series of telescoping roofs that overlap and thrust skyward, generating dynamic architectural gestures that evoke both arrow and harpoon forms. Rather than choosing traditional horizontal expansion, the architecture embraces vertical potential, creating a building that layers across two levels with the upper level concealing an entire garden level from view, generating unique spatial experiences while maintaining seamless connection through sophisticated interior volume modulation. The building's form strategically opens toward the surrounding forest and Lake Tremblant, optimizing exposure to natural daylight and maximizing panoramic views of the mountain landscape. This thoughtful orientation ensures that the house maintains an intimate connection to the wilderness while adhering to strict environmental regulations including a ban on visible exterior lighting to protect local wildlife. The building facade showcases warm wood slats and dry-stacked stone, providing superior weather protection from a functional perspective while possessing refined aesthetic significance that harmonizes with the surrounding forest. Material selection demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to place and climate. The razor-thin eaves, seamlessly integrated ventilation details, and locally sourced materials create a tactile dialogue that maps the resilient qualities of the surrounding natural environment. The complex triangulated ceiling system provides necessary structural support while allowing for maximized interior spatial experience, modulating interior volumes from intimate living spaces to dramatic skylight culmination above the kitchen area. The project culminates in the sophisticated spatial organization, which simultaneously serves multiple functions across two levels totaling over 700 square meters. The main level features generous living areas with monumental stone fireplace, expansive kitchen with hidden pantry, and master suite with private balcony, while the lower level provides three additional bedrooms including children's room with bunk beds, spacious family room, game room with bar and pool table, and wellness zone with sauna and fully equipped gym. This innovative design exemplifies how contemporary architecture can maximize spatial efficiency while providing luxury living service experiences, creating a feeling that is both grounded and aspirational. Design Team - MU Architecture stands as a distinguished Canadian architectural practice that has established an exceptional reputation in innovative contemporary design. Founded by Charles Côté and Jean-Sébastien Herr in 2010 and based in Montreal, Quebec, under the creative direction of design principals Charles Côté and Jean-Sébastien Herr, the firm has developed a reputation for creating innovative solutions across elegant contemporary residences, human-oriented creative office spaces, and large-scale avant-garde projects. Charles Côté and Jean-Sébastien Herr bring exceptional architectural experience and deep understanding of contemporary building practices to the firm. Under the leadership of founding partners, supported by a talented multidisciplinary team including Magda Telenga, Pierre-Loup Pivoin, Maude Hébert, Karine Taillon, Céleste Main, and Sakiko Watatani, the practice has garnered recognition for its meticulous attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship. This combination of global expertise with contemporary design innovation positions MU Architecture uniquely within Canada's architectural landscape. The firm's design philosophy emphasizes that site-specific solutions are as important as architectural execution, not rushing to standardized architectural solutions but believing that architecture should be a result of thorough understanding of environmental conditions, cultural contexts, and programmatic requirements. Through dialogue with clients, they formulate the main ingredients for the project then offer their expertise to transform ideas into reality. MU Architecture believes that exceptional ideas come from collaboration with specialized consultants and artisans, they love to challenge themselves and push the design boundary further, with innovation being the key to keeping their business running. Through this thoughtful synthesis of local material usage, understanding of traditional spatial logic, and contemporary architectural language, MU Architecture has established itself as a significant contributor to Canada's contemporary architectural discourse, creating architectural works that are both rooted in place and embrace global design vision. Their work has been recognized with numerous international awards, demonstrating their ability to transform bold conceptual ideas into tangible architectural achievements that inspire and transform daily life. 2023 Previous Next
INDY ARCHITECTES | Archicasting
Nestled in the picturesque heights of the Isère Valley, the Bioclimatic Contemporary House by INDY ARCHITECTES is a masterful fusion of sustainable design and modern aesthetics. This ambitious project, completed in 2023, transforms an old vineyard house into a stunning 176-square-meter residence that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. The architects, Josselin GUILLO and Nicolas DULAURENT, faced the challenge of creating a home that offers panoramic views of the Belledonne mountain chain and achieves significant energy performance. Their innovative approach to bioclimatic design compensates for the extensive glazing desired by the clients, striking a perfect balance between visual openness and thermal efficiency. A key feature of the design is the partial integration of the structure into the site's slope, minimizing environmental impact while leveraging the earth's thermal inertia. The long retaining wall in stamped raw concrete serves as a tectonic and landscape fold, evoking the rock strata of the underlying terrain and anchoring the building to its site. The upper floor, housing bedrooms and night areas, is ingeniously designed as a suspended crown that acts as a large awning, providing crucial sun protection for the glazed spaces below. This volume is encircled by a wooden sunshade-protected passageway, with strategically placed openings that maintain direct landscape views without compromising thermal comfort. Perhaps the most striking element is the main living area's transformative nature. Large sliding glass frames allow for a complete opening of the facades, blurring the lines between interior and exterior. This adaptability enables the house to function as a protective, contemplative shelter or an open, garden-integrated living space, depending on the season. INDY ARCHITECTES, founded in 2019 by Nicolas DULAURENT and Josselin GUILLO, is a dynamic architectural practice based in Grenoble, France. This 334,057-square-meter development responds to Hangzhou's development needs as the central business district of a world-class urban cluster sub-center in the Yangtze River Delta, strategically positioned in the connecting area between Qiantang Century City and Qianjiang New City. Its unique design draws inspiration from the concept of "setting sail," integrating five towers into the plot and river in a sailboat form, symbolizing riding the waves of prosperity and vigorous development. These towers feature varying heights and overlapping layers that create a vibrant silhouette, resembling the dynamic posture of sails catching the wind, echoing the surrounding environment and forming a distinctive skyline along the Qiantang River. The towers symbolize the combination of sail and wind, complemented by staggered glass curtain walls. The curves of the podium reflect the flowing river currents, together creating a tall and lightweight architectural silhouette that harmoniously blends with the waterfront greenery, presenting a beauty of natural harmony. The overall planning emphasizes connection with nature. The ingenious layout of the five towers ensures permeability and maximizes views of the Qiantang River. Through public spaces such as pedestrian paths, Guanyun Qiantang City is closely connected with the natural environment, creating multi-dimensional waterfront plazas and terraced green spaces. The project enjoys an excellent location, adjacent to the Qiantang River on the west with premium riverfront views and urban visibility. Franz&Sue's recently completed Leopold-Kohr-Straße Primary and Secondary School in Vienna sets a new benchmark for contemporary learning environments. Situated in the city's northern "Transdanubia" district, the school anchors ongoing urban development with a design that responds innovatively to its surroundings. The standout feature is the abundance of spacious, covered terraces that transform the facade into a vertical garden. These outdoor spaces articulate areas for learning and leisure that can be used year-round, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. Classrooms alternate with open niches, and each classroom cluster has direct access to its own sheltered terrace, allowing children to playfully discover their school's nooks and crannies. At the heart of the all-day school, a soaring atrium with reflective bridge elements instills a sense of movement and discovery. This central orientation hub connects all levels to the inviting outdoor terraces. Even interior spaces like the library offer views to the verdant school garden through full-height glazing. On breaks, pupils can quickly escape to the gardens via large stairs and even a slide from upper floors. Some sports facilities remain open to the public after hours, enhancing the neighborhood's amenities. Feature: Project - Nestled at the dead-end of a T-junction in Toyota City's Tendo neighborhood, the Michikari House designed by Kazuki Moroe Architects brings the concept of "streets" into a private residence. The area is known for its winding roads and alleyways, including the historic Iida Kaido path nearby. Embracing these idiosyncrasies, the architects incorporated multiple open-air "streets" throughout the house to foster interaction, sunlight, and ventilation. At the home's north-south axis, a hobby room with engawa porch fronts the street, blurring public and private space. This allows residents to engage with neighbors while enabling sunlight and breezes to permeate from the inner courtyard to the rear façade. On the east side, another large engawa creates an indoor-outdoor living room for family life to spill out towards the back garden. The architects hoped that if all neighbors did this, it would create communal voids benefitting everyone. Inside, an elevated bridge street connects the east and west wings. Acting like an urban lane, it provides some privacy while allowing family activities to be overheard from the street, with circulation routes modulating interpersonal distances. Ultimately, the house translates the concept of vibrant, welcoming streets into residential architecture. Design Team - Founded in 2008 by Kazuki Moroe, Kazuki Moroe Architects is an architectural design firm based in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Kazuki Moroe previously studied at Tokyo Metropolitan University Graduate School and worked at Shirakansi Associates before establishing his own practice. Over the past 15 years, the firm has been recognized with various awards for its sensitive residential designs attuned to local contexts, including Good Design Awards and the Association for Aichi Quality Housing Awards. Notably, in 2023, Moroe was honored with the Chubu Architecture Award for the Okuma Machine Tool Engineering Building at Nagoya University. Project Name: GIGI VERDE Nara Location: Nara City, Japan Design Team: SIDES CORE Area: 43 m² Completion: September 1, 2024 Photography: Yosuke Ohtake Lighting Design: DAIKO Electric Co., Ltd. Construction: THE Ltd. Design Period: May 7, 2024 - June 27, 2024 Construction Period: July 15, 2024 - August 6, 2024 Feature: Project - In a masterful demonstration of spatial efficiency, Japanese design studio SIDES CORE, led by Sohei Arao, has created an innovative interior for GIGI VERDE Nara, a flower shop that seamlessly integrates retail, workshop, and consultation spaces within a modest 43-square-meter footprint. The design's centerpiece is a continuously rising floor plane that transforms from entrance to counter to mezzanine, creating a topographical intervention that echoes the mountainous landscape of Nara. This sculptural element, finished in earthy plaster tones, serves multiple functions while providing a neutral backdrop that amplifies the vivid colors of the flowers on display. "The challenge was to create distinct zones without rigid boundaries in such a limited space," explains Arao. The solution manifests in subtle level changes that create natural transitions between areas. The elevated mezzanine, reached by a gently curved path, houses a tranquil consultation area for bridal clients, while the lower level accommodates a spacious workshop where multiple florists can work simultaneously. The shop's innovative storage solutions are integrated within the architectural elements – beneath the 950mm-high counter and within the void spaces created by the elevated floor sections. This intelligent use of space ensures the compact interior remains uncluttered despite the demands of a working flower shop. SIDES CORE's attention to atmospheric detail is evident in the lighting design, developed in collaboration with DAIKO Electric. A carefully positioned pendant light at the rear of the space draws visitors' gaze through the interior, enhancing the perception of depth and height. The stepped display system, featuring organic curves, not only serves as a flexible showcase for varying inventory but also allows passersby to observe florists at work, transforming the retail space into a transparent atelier. This project exemplifies how thoughtful architectural intervention can transform spatial constraints into opportunities for innovation, creating a harmonious environment that enhances both the customer experience and operational efficiency. Design Team - Founded in 2005 by Sohei and Sumiko Arao, SIDES CORE has established itself as one of Japan's most innovative multidisciplinary design studios, operating from their base in Osaka's vibrant Nishiku district.
