2024 Previous Next
- 越池之家 i.House Architecture and Construction | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Stepping into the sweltering heat of a Viet Tri summer afternoon, we were greeted by the homeowner with a warm smile and a simple request - "Help me transform this into a more livable place." The narrow tube house at 5m x 19.5m with a total area of 292.5 m2 suffered from poor layout, lack of light and ventilation. A dark, cramped staircase monopolized movement and views. The west-facing orientation bore the brunt of afternoon sun, resulting in unbearable heat. The busy street location only exacerbated noise and pollution. Surrounding greenery and open spaces were untapped assets. I.HOUSE embraced the challenge, dubbing it the "Viet Tri House" project. Their deft renovations honored the original while optimizing space and connections. Living, dining, kitchen and garage remained intact, while the rear was radically reconfigured. Relocating the staircase to the front solved circulation issues and enabled cross-ventilation. The bold addition of lush hanging gardens along the western facade provided shade and a visual delight. Private rooms were pushed to the back for seclusion and comfort. By embracing minimalism and natural materials like basalt and concrete, I.HOUSE created a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. Strategic glass windows and doors framed verdant views and amplified natural light. The shifting interplay of light enhances the textural beauty of the entrance's floating basalt wall. Far beyond a practical restoration, Viet Tri House embodies bespoke architectural poetry. Each space sings with harmony and flow, drawing residents and visitors closer to nature through the interplay of volumes, materials and light. A serene urban refuge tuned to modern sensibilities while respecting cultural roots. Design Team - Established in 2007, I.HOUSE Architecture & Construction pioneers Vietnam’s architecture, interior design and construction, specializing in “Eco-minimalism”. Obtaining intellectual property protection in 2012, its elegant, balanced and sustainable approach shapes living spaces by removing unnecessary elements for straightforward, cozy and tranquil environments. I.HOUSE ’s studio fuels exploration where ideas are tested and new frontiers discovered. From brainstorming to models and eco-friendly innovations, architects unite to make their mark. The studio also houses the mission behind each project. From research to design, ideas transformed into built form - every step aims to construct unmatched “first places”. Above all, the studio connects passionate teams who share ideas, thoughts and feedback to develop inspiring eco-minimalist architecture - the architecture of the future. 2023 Previous Next
Binishells Inc. | Archicasting
The Shell Home in Malibu, designed by Binishells Inc., is a groundbreaking architectural project that challenges conventional construction methods and reimagines sustainable living. This 6,500 square foot residence, completed in 2022, showcases an innovative approach to design and building technology that could revolutionize the industry. At the heart of the Shell Home's design is a unique 'Form Finding Functionality' that utilizes air pressure to create an asymmetrical thin shell structure. This method not only expedites construction but also results in a sculptural living space that seamlessly blends with its surroundings. The sinusoidal silhouette of the building emerges organically from the landscape, offering flowing interiors framed by generous organic openings that maximize views and natural light. The construction process employs a reusable pneumatic formwork, inflated to a specified pressure, onto which steel reinforcement and concrete are applied. This technique significantly reduces material waste, labor requirements, and construction timelines while producing a more resilient and environmentally friendly structure. The Shell Home's dual-curvature, monolithic envelope boasts impressive structural efficiency and adaptability. Made from low-carbon geopolymer concrete, it contains less than half the embodied energy of a traditional building of similar size. The thermal bridge-free design and superior insulation contribute to a remarkable 65% reduction in energy use. This project not only pushes the boundaries of architectural expression but also sets a new standard for sustainable and resilient design, offering a glimpse into the future of construction across various scales and programs. Founded over 60 years ago by Dr. Dante Bini, Binishells has established itself as a pioneer in innovative construction technologies. - Tentative PLAT | Archicasting
2023 Previous Next

Project Name: Villa Beusi Location: Sanremo, Italy Design Team: Calvi Ceschia Viganò architetti associati Total Floor Area: 250 m² Completion: 2021 Photography: Aldo Amoretti Feature: Project - In the heart of Italy's agricultural landscape, Villa Beusi represents a radical environmental recovery that transforms a concrete wasteland into a harmonious dialogue between architecture and nature. This 250-square-meter single-family home achieves a perfect balance between land regeneration and architectural restraint through meticulous design. The project's most distinctive feature is its rigorous approach to land reclamation. The design team thoroughly transformed what was once a concrete platform cluttered with asbestos-covered sheds, returning 87% of surfaces to their natural state while reconstructing only 25% of the original building volume. This significant reduction creates an exemplary case of architectural restraint. The architectural design is intentionally simple, respecting the typological characteristics of surrounding buildings. The single-story structure establishes a harmonious relationship with the landscape through a sequence of volumes of varying depths. At the entrance, the building volume narrows and is traversed by open pathways, ensuring permeability with the landscape and retreating from the roof to create covered transition spaces. The landscape design employs a graduated approach to vegetation, becoming increasingly structured as one approaches the residence. Beginning with Mediterranean scrub, it progresses to open-air cultivations, olive groves and orchards, a garden of aromatic herbs serving the residence, and "filter" green areas with climbing plants that soften elevation changes and allow for the planting of new trees. Every detail of Villa Beusi is minimal and deliberately understated, occasionally allowing for subtle refinements through skilled craftsmanship—for example, achieving visual continuity between the exposed concrete exterior and the wooden ceiling interior. The project demonstrates how architectural design can restore environmental balance and create human habitats that coexist harmoniously with nature. Design Team - Calvi Ceschia Viganò architetti associati was born from friendship, shared ideas, and the awareness that uniting three individual architectural paths into a common vision would extend everyone's perspective. The firm was founded by Marco Calvi, Gaetano Ceschia, and Andrea Viganò, each bringing over thirty years of research and work experience. The firm's design philosophy views city and territory as collective and plural facts, expressions of a community's public values, while architecture is seen as an individual and singular moment, based on each person's particular vision. They carefully resolve the implicit contradictions between these through precise design solutions. Operating as a flexible design collective, Calvi Ceschia Viganò functions as a general contractor in the design realm, coordinating bespoke professional teams tailored to each project's specific requirements. This adaptable organizational structure allows the practice to address projects of various scales and typologies with precision and contextual sensitivity. Their multidisciplinary team includes architects, engineers, urban planners, and interior designers who collaborate to develop comprehensive design solutions. This integrated approach enables the firm to negotiate the complex relationships between public and private values, historical continuity, and contemporary expression that characterize their award-winning architectural works throughout Italy and France. Through projects like Villa Beusi, Calvi Ceschia Viganò demonstrates their ability to create spaces that both respect the environment and are architecturally expressive, setting new standards for contemporary architectural practice. 2021 Previous Next
Unsangdong Architects | Archicasting
Nestled in Seongbuk District, South Korea, the Odong Public Library by UnSangDong Architects reimagines the concept of a community reading space. This 431-square-meter gem, completed in 2023, transforms a once-neglected area of Odong Park into a vibrant hub of knowledge and relaxation. The library's most striking feature is its innovative bookshelf wall structure, which serves as both a functional storage solution and a spatial divider. This flowing, maze-like arrangement creates a series of interconnected spaces that can be both autonomous and integrated, offering visitors a unique navigational experience. The building's form is equally captivating, with a spiral ceiling that mimics the contours of a mountain, peaking at the central main room. A foldable roof with varying heights allows natural light to cascade through, blurring the lines between interior and exterior spaces. UnSangDong Architects have masterfully balanced form and function, creating a space that transcends its modest size. The careful arrangement of bookshelves, windows, and structural elements achieves a harmonious blend of furniture, space, and framework. Despite its compact footprint, the Odong Public Library offers a rich, multilayered experience. Visitors from all walks of life can feel both purposeful and nomadic as they explore the flowing spaces. The design encourages creativity and innovation, particularly for local children, through its multi-code maze concept. By seamlessly integrating with the existing park landscape and addressing community needs, the Odong Public Library stands as a testament to thoughtful, community-centered architecture. Founded in the early 2000s, Unsangdong Architects is a pioneering South Korean design studio that has consistently pushed the boundaries of conceptual architecture. Project:wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm Elementary School Team:hcma Size:3385 m² Location:Vancouver, Canada Feature: Project - In the heart of Vancouver, a groundbreaking educational facility has emerged, setting a new standard for sustainable and child-centric design. The wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm Elementary School, designed by hcma architecture + design, is a beacon of innovation in school architecture, seamlessly blending cutting-edge construction techniques with a nurturing learning environment. At the core of this CDN $22.4 million project is its pioneering use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, marking it as Vancouver School Board's first school constructed entirely from this sustainable material. This bold choice not only significantly reduces the building's carbon footprint but also creates a serene, inspiring atmosphere for its 340 young occupants. The school's 3,385 square meter footprint is ingeniously divided into four volumes, connected by a central atrium. This cruciform layout breaks down the institutional scale, offering students relatable, comfortable spaces that encourage both focus and collaboration. Large, folding glass partitions blur the lines between classrooms and shared areas, fostering a fluid, adaptable learning experience. Natural light floods the interiors, while exposed timber surfaces bring warmth and a connection to nature throughout. The design thoughtfully incorporates quiet nooks and window seats, providing moments of retreat within the vibrant communal spaces. Perhaps most strikingly, the school features a slide connecting different levels of the playground, injecting an element of playfulness into the daily routine. This unexpected touch embodies the project's ethos: a school that not only educates but delights and inspires, setting a new benchmark for elementary education spaces in Canada and beyond. Design Team - Founded in 1976 by Roger Hughes, hcma architecture + design has evolved into a leading Canadian firm at the forefront of sustainable and community-centric architecture. Mareines Arquitetura | Archicasting
2024 Previous Next

Project Name: Strolling Gardens & House Location: Eastern Japan Design Team: IKAWAYA Architects Total Floor Area: 688.93 m² Completion: May 2024 Photography: Michikado Mishima Feature: Project - In a residential area of eastern Japan, the "Strolling Gardens & House" stands out for its innovative design approach. Situated on an irregularly shaped plot, IKAWAYA Architects responded to this challenge by creating a living experience that seamlessly integrates nature with daily life. The core concept of the building is "stacking gardens in multiple directions," creating garden spaces of varying sizes at different levels and orientations, allowing residents to continuously experience nature throughout their daily activities. Rather than designing one large monolithic structure, the architects chose to break the house into multiple "small boxes" cleverly arranged along the irregular site boundaries. This solution not only adapts to the site constraints but also harmonizes with the scale of the surrounding residential area, avoiding visual imposition on the neighborhood. This composition creates a rich spatial sequence, forming a unique circulatory experience. Residents can experience variations between openness and privacy as they move through different spaces, with each area offering different dwelling possibilities that meet the diverse living needs of the family. This circulatory design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese strolling gardens but reinterprets them for contemporary living. The façade design reflects the diversity of interior spaces, with carefully placed windows and courtyards creating a dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. Handcrafted materials and tactile surface treatments emphasize the connection to nature, creating a warm and textured environment. The architects' attention to detail is evident at every junction and turn, demonstrating a commitment to craftsmanship. "Strolling Gardens & House" exemplifies how seemingly restrictive site conditions can be transformed into unique design advantages. Here, gardens are not merely decorative elements but central components of the living experience, prompting residents to recognize themselves as part of natural cycles. The project successfully balances practical requirements of contemporary living with the desire for natural experiences, creating a family environment that is both avant-garde and intimate. Design Team - IKAWAYA Architects was established by Atsushi Ikawa in 2017 and has grown to become one of Japan's most innovative architectural practices. Born in Osaka in 1980 and raised in Gifu, Ikawa completed his Master's program at Tokyo Metropolitan University in 2004, followed by formative experience at Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP architectural office. Currently, the IKAWAYA team consists of 8 professionals providing comprehensive services including architectural design, interior design, landscape planning, and project supervision. The firm is known for its keen understanding of spatial experience and clever integration of natural elements, with works often showcasing fluid spatial sequences and rich material expressions. IKAWAYA's design philosophy emphasizes architecture that responds to both emotional and physiological needs of users, creating environments that are both practical and poetic. They view architecture holistically, carefully considering how each detail affects the quality of the living experience. The firm has received numerous awards for excellence in design, including the 2024 DFA Design for Asia Silver and Bronze Awards, the 2023 Modern Living Grand Prize, and the JID Award. Ikawa himself has been serving as a Visiting Professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University since 2021, continuing to influence and nurture the next generation of architects. Through projects like "Strolling Gardens & House," IKAWAYA Architects demonstrates its unique ability to create architectural works that both respond to local environments and meet the demands of modern living, representing the forefront of contemporary residential design in Japan. 2024 Previous Next

Project Name: Sani House Location: Amami City, Japan Design Team: Ono Ryosuke Architecture Total Floor Area: 118.91 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Hasegawa Kenta Feature: Project - Located at the northern tip of Amami Oshima in Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture, Sani House by Ono Ryosuke Architecture represents an innovative vacation rental concept. This 118.91-square-meter project, positioned directly facing the ocean and surrounded by pandanus windbreak forests, emerges as a compelling example of contextually responsive design that reinterprets traditional forms. The project's most distinctive feature is its modern reinterpretation of Amami Oshima's traditional "dohyo" (sumo ring) structural system. The design team ingeniously substituted reinforced concrete walls for traditional large log columns to support square wooden truss roofs, preserving traditional forms while addressing the scarcity of large timber on the island. The spatial organization is equally remarkable, with a spacious central earthen floor area at its core and small private rooms and wet areas positioned in the four corners, creating a clustered arrangement reminiscent of the island's traditional multi-building residences. Each small room and bathroom features direct outdoor access, perfectly accommodating oceanfront activities. Perhaps most innovative is the project's dual functionality, serving both as a vacation rental and as a showroom where visitors can experience the building materials sold by the client. The reinforced concrete walls not only serve structural functions but also provide necessary resilience against frequent typhoons, eliminating the need for bracing and load-bearing walls in the wooden sections, thus creating unobstructed spaces with large oceanfront openings. Through these innovative elements, the design team has crafted a space that respects local traditions while exploring contemporary architectural possibilities. Sani House transcends its role as a conventional vacation home to become an architectural mediator between past and present—a place that rediscovers and reconnects the architectural heritage of Amami Oshima with contemporary possibilities. Design Team - Ono Ryosuke Architecture was founded in 2018 as an Amami Oshima-based architectural practice by principal architect Ryosuke Ono, after completing his education at Yokohama National University and gaining experience in Tokyo. The firm's methodology centers on reinterpreting traditional typologies through contemporary structural and material approaches, creating architecture that is simultaneously innovative and deeply rooted in place. Under Ono's leadership, the design team focuses on creating architecture that responds thoughtfully to its environment while exploring the intersection between vernacular traditions and modern design solutions. The practice's portfolio demonstrates exceptional spatial sensitivity and contextual awareness, encompassing residential, commercial, and hospitality typologies. Projects like Sani House exemplify the firm's masterful manipulation of space, structure, and form, with designs that preserve traditional essence while presenting distinctly contemporary qualities. In just a few years since its inception, Ono Ryosuke Architecture has received numerous accolades, including the 2022 Good Design Award, Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) Excellence in Architecture Selection 2022 Top 100, and Japan Spatial Design Award 2022 Gold Prize (Residential Category). The firm continues to advance its vision of connecting tradition with modernity, creating deeply regional spatial experiences through thoughtful design. 2024 Previous Next

Project Name: YAWN YARD Kouri Island Location: Okinawa, Japan Design Team: Schemata Architects Area: 921.85 m² Completion: August 2024 Photographer: Ju Yeon Lee Feature: Project - Japanese architect Jo Nagasaka and his firm Schemata Architects have unveiled YAWN YARD Kouri Island, a collection of distinctive V-shaped villas that respond ingeniously to the challenging topography of Okinawa's coastline. Located on the scenic Kouri Island, the project reimagines the typical resort typology through a modular yet adaptable design approach. The architects developed an innovative "inverted V-shaped unit" system that combines two standardized plans, allowing each villa to be uniquely positioned while maintaining construction efficiency. The complex is spread across two distinct sites – a narrow strip along the road with undulating terrain, and a trapezoidal plot with significant level changes. Rather than forcing identical structures onto the irregular landscape, Nagasaka's solution allows each villa to adjust its V-angle and orientation, creating varied compositions that embrace rather than fight the site's constraints. Each villa is thoughtfully organized around a semi-outdoor space positioned at the V's opening, offering prime ocean views. This central area serves as a fluid indoor-outdoor living space featuring a dining area and private pool. The two wings house bedrooms with either kitchen or bathroom facilities facing the sea, creating an intuitive flow between spaces. The project stands out for its deep integration with Okinawan culture and craftsmanship. Nagasaka collaborated extensively with local artisans and manufacturers, incorporating indigenous materials like Ryukyu limestone and traditional tiles. The interior features custom furniture made by local workshops and artworks by Okinawan artists, while the landscape design carefully considers native vegetation. The architecture creates what Nagasaka calls a "seamless and leisurely time" – a sophisticated interplay between interior and exterior spaces that responds to daily rhythms, from morning sunbathing to evening sunset views, all while maintaining privacy between neighboring units. Design Team - Schemata Architects, established in 1998 by visionary architect Jo Nagasaka, has emerged as one of Japan's most innovative architectural practices, consistently pushing the boundaries of spatial design through a distinctive methodology that bridges conceptual thinking with hands-on materiality. Founded upon graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts, Nagasaka's studio has evolved into a multidisciplinary powerhouse, orchestrating projects across architectural, interior, and furniture design. The practice, headquartered in Tokyo's Sendagaya district, operates under a philosophy that emphasizes 1:1 scale thinking—an approach that treats every project, regardless of scale, with the same rigorous attention to detail and spatial relationship. Under Nagasaka's leadership, the firm has garnered international recognition for its adaptive reuse projects and retail environments, notably the globally acclaimed Blue Bottle Coffee outlets and the innovative DESCENTE BLANC retail concept. The practice's portfolio demonstrates exceptional versatility, from private residences like the minimalist Sayama Flat to institutional projects such as the Musashino Art University Building No.16. Schemata's work is characterized by its material honesty, spatial fluidity, and innovative programming solutions. The firm's methodology often involves experimental material applications and creative space-planning strategies, resulting in environments that challenge conventional architectural paradigms while maintaining functional integrity. This approach has earned them numerous commissions for cultural institutions, retail brands, and private clients worldwide, establishing Schemata as a leading voice in contemporary architectural discourse. 2024 Previous Next
Project Name: NewAns Shinjuku Studio Location: Shinjuku District, Tokyo, Japan Design Team: Shin Aoki & Partners Construction: MYARDS Area: 86 m² Completion: April 2024 Photographer: Shota Hiyoshi Feature: Project - Japanese architect Shin Aoki has designed a hybrid fitness studio in Tokyo's Shinjuku district that deliberately blurs the boundaries between digital and physical training experiences while embracing social media culture. Located on the fourth floor of a commercial building, NewAns Shinjuku represents a fresh take on fitness spaces that moves away from traditional muscle-building environments toward a more holistic wellness approach. The 86-square-meter studio combines personal training and Pilates facilities with carefully considered social media integration and online training capabilities. "In an increasingly saturated fitness market, we wanted to create a space that prioritizes sustainable health over temporary physical transformation," Aoki explains. "The design needed to work equally well for both in-person sessions and online streaming." The studio's most striking feature is its training area, defined by an interplay of undulating curtains and staggered wooden wall panels. This intentionally irregular spatial configuration helps users lose sense of the room's actual dimensions, allowing them to focus entirely on their workout sessions. The architect employed a sophisticated material palette of soft woods and textiles to create a calming atmosphere that contrasts sharply with conventional gym aesthetics. Particularly innovative is the studio's approach to social media integration. A specially designed curved wall at the entrance serves as a branded photography backdrop for visitors' social posts, while the cardio area strategically faces park views through large windows – positioning exercising clients as living advertisements visible to passersby. The space is meticulously planned to function as a seamless filming location for online content, with carefully positioned logo placements and considered lighting that works equally well for both in-person training and video streaming. Full-height fixtures and handle-less doors maintain clean sightlines throughout, eliminating visual distractions in both real and digital environments. This thoughtful merger of physical and digital design elements creates what Aoki calls a "node between online and offline experiences" – a space that feels familiar to clients who discover it through social media, while providing an enhanced real-world experience that's inherently shareable. Design Team - Founded in 2021, Shin Aoki & Partners (SAAP) is an emerging Tokyo-based architectural practice that sits at the intersection of spatial innovation and human-centric design. Led by Principal Architect Shin Aoki, who brings valuable experience from his tenure at Kengo Kuma & Associates (2019-2024), the studio has rapidly established itself as a thoughtful voice in Japan's contemporary architectural scene. The practice's methodology is deeply rooted in phenomenological approaches to architecture, emphasizing the experiential quality of spaces while addressing contemporary social and environmental challenges. Following his education at The University of Tokyo and international experience at firms including Vo Trong Nghia Architects and Moreau Kusunoki Architects, Aoki has developed a distinctive design philosophy that merges Japanese spatial traditions with contemporary programmatic needs. The interdisciplinary team, including graphic designer Yamato Iizuka and master carpenter Toshiki Nishimura, approaches each project through rigorous research and prototyping. Their work is characterized by a careful consideration of materiality, innovative spatial sequences, and an acute awareness of environmental performance. SAAP's portfolio demonstrates their commitment to creating architecture that transcends mere functional requirements, instead focusing on crafting spaces that enhance user experience through careful attention to tactile qualities, natural light, and spatial flow. 2024 Previous Next
Ateliers O-S architectes | Archicasting
Harmonizing massiveness and porosity, the Samuel Paty School Group by Ateliers O-S architectes presents a bold yet permeable presence in the Devèze district of Béziers, France. Centered around a striking longitudinal volume that adapts to the site's topography, the single-story primary school building offers a human-scaled facade to the street. The building's defining element is its sanded concrete materiality, unifying the roof and elevations into one seamless composition blending form and volume. This mineral mass contrasts with the interior's scalable lightness, where classrooms open generously onto playgrounds under soaring metal gantries. Floor-to-ceiling glazing maximizes this connection between indoors and out. Outdoors, the design preserves mature trees while introducing terraced landscaping that blurs built and natural environments. A large entrance canopy with circular skylights shelters a welcoming forecourt and gardens guiding pupils from the street to the halls. Within, spatial choreography responds to user needs. Double-height volumes energize communal areas, while the principal's office strategically overlooks the central playground. Corridors are conceived as exterior but sheltered spaces mediating between classrooms and courtyards. Throughout, the robust concrete shell and lightweight interior finishes establish a compelling dialogue of complementary contrasts. Founded in 2007 after formative experiences at OMA and West8 in Rotterdam, Ateliers O-S architectes is a Paris-based practice helmed by partners Vincent Baur, Guillaume Colboc, and Gaël Le Nouëne. The firm embraces a neo-artisanal approach, consciously mastering the entire design and construction process from conception through execution. Ateliers O-S's portfolio spans public facilities, social housing, and cultural venues across France. Their works are characterized by a judicious sense of scale, fostering social interaction and spatial courtesy. The architects probe and unveil the latent potentials of site-specific uses and activities. This exploratory approach yields architectures replete with unexpected spatial treasures while projecting an alchemical distinctiveness. The firm's accolades include an Eiffel Award (2021), Architecture & Sustainable Construction Awards from CAUE regional bodies, and international competition distinctions. Their built works have been featured in publications like Pavillon Français's catalog for the 2016 Venice Biennale. With a dedicated team including associates Carole Petit, Eléonore Lecoq and others, Ateliers O-S architectes continues advancing its design philosophy premised on evolution, contextrespnsiveness and the revelation of untapped programmatic possibilities. Previous Next
- Hawthorn Hood 别墅 BENT Architecture | Archicasting
Feature: Project - The Hawthorn Hood House is a light-filled family home that skillfully balances heritage sensitivities with modern living needs. Originally approached to renovate an existing property, BENT Architecture ultimately guided their clients to purchase a more suitable site - a period home with strong character but limitations in layout and sunlight. Rather than contrast the modern addition, the architects chose to thoughtfully engage with and reinterpret the home's original proportions and textures, especially its grand interior volumes and intricate terracotta roof form. The project began by removing a previous rear extension to harness the sun-drenched backyard. New living spaces were then oriented northwards to embrace natural light and frame garden views, defined externally by the home's signature roofline folding down in sympathetic response. The soaring yet cosy interiors draw upon the grandeur of the original while fulfilling all the family's aspirations for their forever home. Bedrooms and utilities remain nestled in the heritage envelope to the front as a nod to the surrounding neighborhood. The thoughtful dialogue between old and new creates a warm, light-filled home that deftly balances site sensitivity, functionality and aesthetic delight. Design Team - BENT Architecture was founded in 2003 by Directors Paul and Merran Porjazoski. Based in Brunswick, Melbourne, the practice has delivered award-winning and published projects across diverse sectors. They are recognized as leaders in environmentally sustainable architecture, affordable social and public housing, commercial refurbishments and green roof design. With a focus on enriching people's lives through creative placemaking, BENT emphasizes architecture's integration with landscape to foster engagement. The firm provides comprehensive consultancy encompassing architecture, interior, landscape and urban design. 2024 Previous Next
Archicasting
In the bustling heart of Tokyo, the Ginsen Nishi Shimbashi Building by Nikken Sekkei Ltd stands out with its striking multi-layered facade that pays homage to traditional Japanese residential architecture. Situated at a prominent intersection, the 12-story office tower features a series of angled overhanging eaves that cascade down the building's exterior, reminiscent of the layered rooflines found in historic Japanese homes. This unique facade design serves multiple purposes beyond its symbolic nod to the past. The deep wooden eaves provide shade and act as a psychological buffer between the lively street scene and the serene office interiors. Crafted from a varied mix of cedar wood pieces certified for carbon capture, the textured eaves add warmth and visual interest. Inside, the typical floors optimize environmental performance by orienting the office spaces away from the harsh western sun exposure. Floor-to-ceiling windows along the north and east sides extend the workspace outwards, blurring the lines between inside and the semi-outdoor "veranda" spaces created underneath the overhangs. With its distinctive yet functional form inspired by vernacular architecture, the Ginsen Nishi Shimbashi Building exemplifies how contemporary urban offices can blend modern needs with contextual design rooted in local traditions. The resulting symbiosis enriches the dense Tokyo streetscape. Tracing its origins back to 1900, Nikken Sekkei has established itself as a prominent force in the international architectural arena. NEXT Architects | Archicasting
Project Name: Watchtower Einderheide Location: Bergeijk, Netherlands Design Team: NEXT Architects Height: 26 meters Completion: 2024 Photography: Karl Banski, Koen Mol Feature: Project - NEXT Architects has completed the 26-meter-tall Watchtower Einderheide in Bergeijk, designed to offer visitors a panoramic view of the Brabantse Kempen forest while serving as a habitat for local bat species. The lookout tower integrates both recreational and ecological functions in a modest yet iconic structure that enhances the identity of Einderheide. The design features a spiral staircase leading to the viewing platform, where visitors can experience the forest from various heights. The structure, utilizing laminated larch and pine wood, includes multiple openings and notches at different levels, offering unique perspectives as visitors ascend. The tower's characteristic shape allows for unobstructed views through and above the forest canopy. In addition to its role as a viewing platform, the tower is designed to support the bat population by providing diverse habitats. Niches and cavities are integrated throughout the wooden structure, offering spaces for roosting, mating, and nesting. These features, developed with ecological advice from Jeroen Mos, replicate natural conditions, blending seamlessly into the forest environment. The wood used in the design, particularly laminated larch and thermally preserved pine, contributes to this integration, providing both structural stability and natural rough surfaces for bats to grip. The tower's base is made of a concrete foundation, which serves as a winter roost for bats. This nature-inclusive design follows other ecological projects by Amsterdam-based practice, NEXT Architects, such as the Bat Bridge and the Hopovers at De Centrale As. Commissioned by the Municipality of Bergeijk and supported by the Province of North Brabant and Boskalis, the project involved collaboration with WSP, Mos Ecological Advice and Research, and H+N+S landscape architects. The Watchtower Einderheide stands as a functional landmark within the forest's recreational network, balancing human interaction with wildlife conservation. The project was longlisted for the Nationale Houtbouwprijs 2024 and was a finalist for the Archello Awards 2024. Design Team - NEXT Architects is an international architecture firm established in 1999, working on design and research projects in urban planning, architecture, interior design, and infrastructure. Based in Amsterdam, the firm opened a second office in Beijing, China, in 2004. The practice is led by Bart Reuser, Marijn Schenk, and Michel Schreinemachers, and has developed into a diverse design team. Connection forms the central thesis of NEXT's approach—evident in their broadly oriented design practice and growing portfolio of noteworthy bridges—literal connections. By thinking on a broader level about the role of design within an environment, connection forms not only the common thread through their portfolio but also their working method. NEXT Architects collaborates in multidisciplinary teams to approach projects in innovative ways. With their curious character, desire to think outside the box, and broad knowledge base, they can bring together the right specialists and stakeholders to provide solutions. The strength of the office lies in developing strong ideas that become part of the specific context of a project in a convincing way. From exploration to inspiration, and from ambition to concept, form, and materialization—it revolves around the social, technical, and landscape context that makes each project unique. The most beautiful aspect of architecture is making ideas tangible, visualizing, specifying, and detailing to ultimately know for certain what they will create. By making what they conceive together, they are literally building the future together. Over the years, NEXT Architects' designs have gained international recognition, with their work widely published in professional publications and honored with numerous international design awards. Feature: Project - Breathing new life into an aging Bangkok residence, COLLAGE DESIGN STUDIO has crafted the captivating S Wall House. What began as a modest 50-yearold structure bore witness to tragedy before being reimagined into a contemporary sanctuary that pays homage to its storied past. The architects embraced the challenge of renovating within a tight budget, uncovering a remarkably intact wooden framework with wide, durable floor planks rarely seen today. Relocating the staircase outdoors allowed the former father's office to be repurposed into a striking pool area nested beneath the original resilient concrete arches. Privacy concerns sparked the ingenious inclusion of the sinuous "S" wall - a folding fiber cement partition that gracefully conceals and reveals. This sculptural element delineates space while fostering connectivity, embodying the fusion of old and new that defines the project. Echoing the traditional Thai Taitun design of open-air living areas beneath elevated homes, the downstairs blends nahtreen and outdoor realms in a light-filled setting. Upstairs, the juxtaposition of modern materials against the heritage structure continues in the master suite. The once-dim stairway now forms a luminous core linking floors and blurring indoor/outdoor boundaries. Throughout, cherished remnants intermingle with contemporary insertions, crafting an intergenerational narrative of resilience that honors the past while embracing new beginnings. Design Team - Established in 2012, Collage Design Studio is a Bangkok-based architectural practice guided by the radical notion of "embracing the perfection of imperfection." Under the leadership of principals Cherdsak Soisuwan and Puttichart Wanichtat, the firm has pioneered an avant-garde design ethos that celebrates flaws, imperfections and the opportunistic in architecture. Deviating from the relentless pursuit of flawlessness, Collage finds beauty in organic imperfections and the natural progression of materials over time. Their contextually grounded designs incorporate existing imperfections seamlessly, allowing projects to evolve authentically while fostering a deep connection to their environments. Rather than viewing constraints as limitations, Collage sees them as catalysts for ingenuity. Limits spark remarkable design solutions as the practice uncovers new possibilities by challenging conventions of beauty and design. This exploratory approach resonates with the architectural community, inspiring colleagues to discover the hidden potentials in imperfection. Through their built work, Collage crafts captivating spaces that evoke wonder, surprise and delight. Imperfections manifest as unexpected detailing that imbues the firm's designs with a soulful, textured character resonating at a profound human level. By fostering a collaborative studio culture, the team continuously pushes conceptual boundaries to redefine architectural beauty. Previous Next
- null² NOIZ | Archicasting
Project Name: null² Location: Osaka, Japan Design Team: NOIZ Total Floor Area: 655.46 m² Completion: February 2025 Photography: Taichi Ano, Tomoyuki Kususe Feature: NOIZ Architects has unveiled the groundbreaking null² Pavilion at the Osaka-Kansai Expo site, a transformative project that challenges traditional exhibition architecture typology through innovative responsive building approaches. Located in the core area of the 2025 Japan International Exposition venue, this exhibition facility for Yoichi Ochiai's "Polishing Life" theme represents a bold reimagining of architectural regeneration. The building's most distinctive feature lies in its ingenious integration of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design concepts, seamlessly transforming voxel-based architectural language into contemporary space that embodies the spirit of "interspace." This design strategy directly responds to the site's inherent futuristic context---through a unified design language that simultaneously respects digital architectural heritage and meets modern functional requirements, challenging conventional exhibition architectural conventions.
