Torafu Architects | Archicasting
In the heart of Tokyo's vibrant Shibuya district, the Arc'teryx Tokyo Creation Center emerges as a beacon of innovative design and outdoor inspiration. Conceived by the visionary team at Suppose Design Office, this renovation project transforms an existing structure into a dynamic hub for creativity and collaboration, marking Arc'teryx's first creation center outside North America. The center's design philosophy, aptly dubbed "OUTSIDE IN," seamlessly blends interior and exterior elements, echoing the brand's ethos of harmony with nature. This concept is brilliantly executed through a series of thoughtful architectural interventions, from the indigo-dyed wooden entrance reminiscent of Arc'teryx's iconic 'A' logo to the expansive hinoki wood display wall that greets visitors upon entry. Each floor serves a distinct purpose, with areas dedicated to prototyping, office spaces, and a rooftop terrace offering breathtaking views – all interconnected by a cohesive design language. The centerpiece of the ground floor, a circular arrangement of fan-shaped cutting tables beneath an acoustic cypress louver ceiling, creates a focal point that encourages collaboration and creativity. Perhaps the most striking feature is the integration of art installations throughout the space, each piece carefully selected to evoke the essence of mountains – a nod to Arc'teryx's origins and core values. From indigo-dyed rope sculptures to large-scale photographic works, these artistic elements infuse the environment with a sense of adventure and reverence for nature. TORAFU ARCHITECTS, founded in 2004 by Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro, has established itself as a visionary force in the architectural design industry.
Feature: Project - Álvaro Siza Vieira's sculptural new wing for the Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal elegantly expands the contemporary art institution while deferentially embracing its lush garden setting. The minimalist concrete, glass and wood structure emerges from the verdant landscape like an elongated pavilion, providing 4,200 square meters of new exhibition spaces distributed across three floors. The building's modest scale and horizontal massing allow it to blend seamlessly into the surroundings, with an elevated gallery connecting it to the existing museum while preserving pathways and mature trees. Floor-to-ceiling windows drench the luminous interior with natural light and frame picturesque views of the parkland outside. Siza's typically restrained material palette of Fair-Faced concrete, enameled wood and polished stone creates a warm, textural counterpoint to the sleek architectural forms. The 18 flexible gallery spaces are designed to museum standards with provisions for artificial lighting, climate control and accessibility. Perhaps the wing's most ingenious feature is its sensitive choreography of circulation routes that separate art handling from visitor flows. Service access on the south side discretely accommodates freight deliveries, while a monumental east-facing entrance welcomes the public through a sheltered atrium into the interconnected exhibition spaces. An exemplar of architectural Jose Mateus poetically enhancing its surroundings. Design Team - Álvaro Siza Vieira, one of the most influential architects of the late 20th century, has led an acclaimed practice founded in 1954 after graduating from the University of Porto. Now in its 69th year, the firm is helmed by Siza himself along with a team of associates including his son Álvaro Leite Siza Vieira. The Pritzker Prize laureate's oeuvre demonstrates an exquisite mastery of form, material, and context. From his seminal early works like the Boa Nova Tea House to landmarks such as the Serralves Museum and the reconstruction of Lisbon's Chiado district, Siza's buildings are imbued with a keen sense of place and a sculptural yet functional rigor. His architectural language adroitly synthesizes modernist principles with the rich traditions of Portuguese construction. Siza's deft hand creates buildings of great tectonic clarity yet ample room for poetic experiences of light, texture, and spatial choreography. With prestigious honors like the Pritzker, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, and the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, Siza's prolific six-decade career has secured his place among architecture's most revered living masters. His built works across Europe, Asia, and the Americas serve as an enduring legacy of beauty, authenticity, and a tireless pursuit of design excellence. Previous Next

Located in suburban San José, this 134-square-meter structure showcases VOID's innovative eco-conscious design philosophy, transforming architecture into a floating platform that coexists harmoniously with the natural landscape. The project is composed of two primary horizontal planes: a base that appears to hover above the ground, minimizing site impact, and a shading canopy that provides essential shelter while artfully framing the surrounding landscape. The building employs minimalist aesthetics while strategically utilizing natural light and ventilation to create bright, permeable spaces. Large apertures not only enhance visual connections between interior and exterior but significantly reduce reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation. The project's most remarkable achievement lies in its precise response to the tropical environment and deep commitment to sustainable design principles. Through the thoughtful application of local materials and construction techniques, the architecture demonstrates exceptional site sensitivity. The overall design emphasizes authentic connections with nature, transforming the building into an ideal sanctuary for physical and spiritual well-being, setting new standards for sustainable architectural design in tropical climates. Design Team - VOID, established in 2012 by architects Sergio Frugone, Felipe Rossi, and Ricardo Sevilla, is an innovative international architectural practice. WOS Architects | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Nestled in the serene Mae Rim landscapes of Chiang Mai, this striking residence offers a profound connection to nature while providing urban-style comforts. Designed by WOS Architects, the Mae Rim House seamlessly blends into its verdant surroundings, embracing fresh air, verdant trees, mountain vistas, and the soothing sounds of the Mae Sa Stream. The two-story dwelling features an elongated silhouette with a dramatically pitched roof that slopes towards the upper floor edges, maintaining an elegant proportional balance. Architecturally deft, the layout divides the residence into two wings united by a double-height atrium at the heart of the home. This airy central space, open on both sides to the outdoors, facilitates natural cross ventilation enhanced by the mountain breeze. Privacy and connection are masterfully balanced, with the southern wing housing bedrooms that offer picturesque mountain and stream views, while the northern wing contains a guest suite and open lounge linked to the atrium. On the upper level, the pitched roof creates lofty living spaces reminiscent of an attic yet without feeling confined, achieved through ingenious cutouts that allow natural light to pour in alongside planters with trees. Sustainability was also paramount, with existing furniture and appliances relocated from the client's former Bangkok home, lending a sense of continuity. Indirect lighting washes the spaces in a soft, diffused glow, while a serene taupe palette complements the natural surroundings. A triumph of design synthesis, Mae Rim House forges an indelible connection between dwelling and landscape. Design Team - Founded in 2019, WOS Architects is a boutique Bangkok-based practice helmed by the duo of Prueksakun Kornudom and Ornpailin Leelasiriwong. Kornudom received his architectural training at Assumption University, while Leelasiriwong holds degrees from Chulalongkorn University and ETH Zurich's prestigious MAS Urban Design program. Though small in size, WOS punches well above its weight class, with a portfolio encompassing architectural design, interiors, and innovative projects that defy simple categorization. The firm's design ethos prizes simplicity and practicality, but also actively embraces ambiguity. WOS conceives of architecture as crafting places not just for human dwellers, but for guests and nature as well - their work seeks to dissolve boundaries between building and environment. WOS's name itself exemplifies their multivalent approach - it can be read as three meaningless English letters, or interpreted from the Thai alphabet as meaning "enough." This openness to interpretation extends to their architectural language, which resists rigid codification in favor of nuanced, contextually-driven solutions. From compact urban renovations like the JY House to more expansive projects like the Little C Bakery Shop, WOS deftly navigates constraints with rational simplicity. Yet they also imbue each undertaking with a subtle ambiguity that provokes fresh perspectives. For this emerging studio, creativity arises from exploring possibility over probability - their practice is defined by simple, rational, yet delightfully multivalent outputs. Previous Next

2025 Previous Next

Titled "Library in the Earth," this tranquil sunken reading retreat immerses visitors in an earthy, womb-like space celebrating the agricultural roots of its location within the KURKKUFIELDS farm in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture. Designed by Takushi Nakamura & NAP Architects, the subterranean library gently emerges from the verdant valley it occupies like a bulbous protrusion from the earth itself. An intentionally understated approach path subtly draws people into the sculpted, grassy underground corridor lined with bookshelves. The architecture is pared back, eschewing columns and beams, with a dramatically cantilevered concrete void slab resting only on perimeter retaining walls. The seamless soil-finished surfaces blend into a carpet of drooping vegetation that introduces a hushed humidity. The ceiling heights fluctuate to create hidden child-scaled spaces and intimate reading nooks. At the deepest point, a terraced amphitheater encircled by shelves houses a storytelling area filled with books for local farm workers and children. The 40mm thick wooden shelf slats extend upwards as structural ribs, their interconnected load paths representing the interdependence required to create resilient community spaces. An overhead skylight frames circling clouds like a portal to the wider world this rural oasis ultimately serves. Established in 2002 by Hiroshi Nakamura, the Tokyo-based practice Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP has emerged as a leading voice in organic, contextual design thatharmonizes architecture with nature and human experiences. Yusuke Ando Architects | Archicasting
In a bold reimagining of rural living, Japanese architecture firm Yusuke Ando Architects has transformed a 32-year-old wooden house in Saijo, Ehime Prefecture, into a futuristic dwelling that blurs the line between earthbound home and interstellar vessel. Dubbed the " House of Aliens with Concave Lenses," this innovative renovation project breathes new life into an existing structure, creating a captivating narrative for a family relocating from the urban core to the countryside. The design concept revolves around the metaphor of a "spaceship carrying the family," cleverly intertwining the homeowners' journey with the building's architectural evolution. This narrative-driven approach not only informed the spatial composition and material selection but also encouraged the clients to embrace the renovation process with enthusiasm, viewing it as an opportunity to create something more intriguing than a new build. The most striking feature of the house is its array of concave lens windows, which serve dual purposes. During the imaginary "space flight," these windows act as fish-eye lenses, offering expansive views of the exterior. Post-"landing," they function as skylights, diffusing natural light throughout the interior. This playful yet functional design element is complemented by an L-shaped horizontal window with a counter resembling a spaceship cockpit, which now frames picturesque views of the surrounding rural landscape. Yusuke Ando Architects has masterfully balanced old and new, integrating existing furniture with custom-built pieces and exposing the original timber structure. The result is a tensioned harmony between past and present, creating a truly unique living space that tells a compelling story of relocation, adaptation, and new beginnings. Yusuke Ando Architects, founded in 2017 in Tokyo, is an emerging architectural practice that has quickly gained recognition for its innovative and narrative-driven design approach. Feature: Project - In a striking fusion of heritage and modernity, a century-old wooden Chinese residence has been masterfully transformed into a captivating commercial teahouse. This groundbreaking project, nestled at the foot of Moganshan, breathes new life into one of the last remaining examples of traditional Jiangnan architecture in the area. The designers have deftly balanced preservation with innovation, creating a space that respects its historical roots while embracing contemporary needs. By strategically trimming sections of the exterior surface, roof, and second-story floorboards, they have allowed natural light and air to permeate the once-dark interior, dramatically altering the spatial experience. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the redesign is the introduction of two glass pavilions. The first, seamlessly integrated within the historic structure, provides climate-controlled tea-drinking areas without compromising the building's authenticity. Its steel frame interlaces with the original wooden beams, creating a captivating dialogue between old and new. The second pavilion, standing independently in the courtyard, houses a tea bar and amenities. Its bamboo-steel composite structure echoes the curvilinear profile of the historic eaves, offering a contemporary interpretation of traditional craftsmanship. Water features extend from the courtyard into the interior, blurring boundaries and creating a fluid transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. This interplay of elements generates a dynamic, thought-provoking environment that invites visitors to contemplate the relationship between past and present. Through this thoughtful renovation, the designers have not only preserved a piece of architectural heritage but have also created a sophisticated, engaging space that resonates with modern sensibilities while honoring its historical roots. Design Team - Founded in Shanghai in 2020, Ao. A remarkable architectural project has emerged in the heart of Aisho, Shiga Prefecture, seamlessly blending historical context with contemporary design. The "Inviting Roof Pharmacy," conceived by Yasuo Imazu of ninkipen!, stands as a testament to thoughtful urban integration in a former post town along the Nakasendo road. This pharmacy, situated in the 65th post station of Echigawa-juku, draws inspiration from the area's rich cultural heritage. Imazu's design pays homage to the lingering essence of the bustling post town era, visible in the surrounding historical structures. The architect's challenge was to create a building that resonates with this historical backdrop while serving modern needs. The project's unique features include an ingenious "inviting roof" design, which maximizes the visible roof area from the street, creating a welcoming gesture to passersby. This is complemented by a "street eaves" element, forming a semi-outdoor space that bridges the interior and exterior realms. A key innovation is the use of a "zushi-nikai" (miniature second floor) structure, which maintains a low profile while ensuring ample interior volume. This clever spatial arrangement allows the building to harmonize with its surroundings without compromising functionality. The pharmacy's facade, characterized by overlapping roofs and eaves, creates a dynamic visual composition that subtly nods to traditional Japanese architecture. The use of wood throughout the structure adds warmth and connects the building to its historical context. Imazu's design philosophy shines through in every aspect, creating a space that not only serves its practical purpose but also contributes positively to the urban fabric. The "Inviting Roof Pharmacy" stands as a beacon of architectural innovation, seamlessly merging past and present in a structure that is both functional and deeply rooted in its cultural context. ninkipen! ninkipen! Founded in 2005 by Yasuo Imazu, ninkipen! is a pioneering architectural design firm based in Minoh, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. - Tapa别墅 Studio Tanama | Archicasting
Ryan B. Named Floating Hotel, the elevated building offers guests an immersive relationship with nature while framing dramatic vistas. Situated in the bucolic Dachangping region near Shanghai, the 6,000-square-metre retreat contains 18 guest suites sheltered beneath an angular folded roof clad in weathered zinc. Raising the sculptural roof volume off the ground allows the lush bamboo forest to flow uninterrupted underneath. "We took the idea of a building 'floating above the bamboo' as inspiration to elevate the hotel, letting the landscape continue beneath it," explained partner Daan Roggeveen. Three glazed amenity pavilions for yoga, dining and events are tucked under the zigzagging roofline. The rooms themselves are designed to heighten the connection with their surroundings. Elongated "corridor" rooms offer panoramic vistas, while corner suites take advantage of dual aspectS. Floor-to-ceiling glazing blurs the transition between inside and out onto a wraparound wood-decked terrace. Steel columns elevate the hotel 8 metres off the ground, creating a cavernous space underneath for an outdoor pool. Warm wood lines the interiors and custom furniture to foster an inviting atmosphere. Design Team - Based in Amsterdam and Shanghai, MORE Architecture is a researchdriven design practice founded in 2013 by Dutch architect Daan Roggeveen and Chinese-American architect Robert Chen. The studio takes an interdisciplinary approach that spans architecture, interior design, and urban planning and strategy. This ambitious 277,723-square-foot development represents a bold reimagining of educational architecture for the 21st century. The project comprises two distinct yet harmoniously connected buildings that embrace the site's unique waterfront location along the Dia Canal. Drawing inspiration from Vietnam's iconic Sa Pa rice terraces, the architects have created a striking exterior featuring undulating curves and cascading planters that host native species, creating a dynamic interplay between built form and natural elements. What sets this project apart is its thoughtful integration of biophilic design principles with cutting-edge educational spaces. The STEAM Design Center houses state-of-the-art facilities including five science labs, specialized art studios, and a versatile indoor/outdoor gallery space, while the Middle School building features a dramatic skylit atria, a 220-square-meter black box theater, and flexible learning environments that adapt to diverse teaching methodologies. The architects have masterfully addressed the tropical climate through intelligent design solutions. The extensive use of natural light, coupled with the strategic placement of bamboo elements in the atria, not only reduces energy consumption but also creates a serene learning environment that pays homage to local architectural traditions. The buildings' positioning on opposite sides of an athletic field maximizes cross-ventilation while creating a central community space that serves as the campus heart. Perhaps most notably, the project's relationship with its urban context sets new standards for educational architecture. Situated within a walkable, mixed-use island neighborhood, the development strengthens community connections through thoughtfully designed pathways and public spaces. The curving balconies, which mirror the meandering waterway below, offer stunning views while creating a visual dialogue between the built environment and the natural landscape. This project represents a significant advancement in educational architecture, where sustainability, cultural sensitivity, and pedagogical innovation converge to create spaces that inspire learning and foster community engagement. Design Team - Flansburgh Architects, established in 1963 in Boston, Massachusetts, has emerged as a pioneering force in educational architecture and sustainable design over its six-decade journey. The firm, currently led by President David Croteau, AIA, LEED AP, has cultivated an impressive portfolio spanning 30 countries, with particular expertise in educational facilities, cultural centers, and civic institutions. Project Name: Whidbey Uparati House Location: Whidbey Island, United States Design Team: Wittman Estes Total Floor Area: 1,880 sq ft Completion: 2024 Photography: Andrew Pogue Feature: Project - Nestled on the rolling landscape of Whidbey Island, the Uparati House by Wittman Estes emerges as a masterful exercise in architectural restraint and ecological sensitivity. Spanning 1,880 square feet, this contemporary retreat challenges traditional notions of residential design by prioritizing a profound connection with its natural surroundings. The project's core philosophy revolves around the Sanskrit concept of "uparati" – meaning stillness – which is eloquently translated into architectural language. Architects Matt Wittman and Jody Estes have crafted a dwelling that doesn't merely occupy the landscape but becomes an integral part of it. The house appears to float above a meadow, its cedar-clad exterior blending seamlessly with the native Blue Oat Grasses and Mexican Feather Grasses that surround it. Innovative sustainability is at the heart of the design. By employing a Ground Frame foundation system, the architects dramatically reduced the carbon footprint by 77% compared to traditional concrete foundations. The structure follows a precise 4-foot grid, utilizing off-the-shelf TJIs and creating a rational, cost-effective construction method that doesn't compromise on aesthetic elegance. The interior is a testament to minimalist design, with plywood walls, cedar tongue and groove ceilings, and white oak floors creating a neutral canvas that allows the dramatic landscape to become the primary visual narrative. Floor-to-ceiling windows transform the boundaries between interior and exterior, offering panoramic views of Useless Bay and the Olympic Mountains. More than just a house, the Uparati House is a meditative sanctuary – a contemporary retreat that invites its inhabitants to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the natural world. Design Team - Founded in 2012 by Matt Wittman and Jody Estes, Wittman Estes has emerged as a vanguard architectural practice committed to reimagining the relationship between built environments and natural landscapes. 2022 Previous Next
