An intentionally understated approach path subtly draws people into the sculpted, grassy underground corridor lined with bookshelves. The architecture is pared back, eschewing columns and beams, with a dramatically cantilevered concrete void slab resting only on perimeter retaining walls. The seamless soil-finished surfaces blend into a carpet of drooping vegetation that introduces a hushed humidity. The ceiling heights fluctuate to create hidden child-scaled spaces and intimate reading nooks. At the deepest point, a terraced amphitheater encircled by shelves houses a storytelling area filled with books for local farm workers and children. "We took the idea of a building 'floating above the bamboo' as inspiration to elevate the hotel, letting the landscape continue beneath it," explained partner Daan Roggeveen.
