ARED ARCHITECTS | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Material Waltz is an apartment renovation in Setagaya, Tokyo designed by Akaike Kazuhito of ARED Architects. Taking inspiration from the creative process behind waltz compositions, the architects sought to express the "dance of decoration" within renovation design. They viewed the existing rules of the apartment as a "musical score" and constructed a new “sheet music” along “skewed spatial axes”, treating materials as “musical notes” and giving them form beyond function. The 22 degree angle spatial axes pay respect to and organize the elements inside and outside the building, creating a unified yet non-monotonic atmosphere with its own unique personality - one where floorplans and arrangements take on musical rhythm and harmony. Beyond functionalism and aesthetics, the architects hoped to appeal to visitors’ emotions and experiences through this musical approach. They gave the materials, viewed collectively as “notes”, distinct “personalities” with whimsical designs that convey more than just modern practicality. The old and new materials assert themselves within the one-room space, crossing brightly like dancers waltzing to the inevitable beats of morning, day and night. Design Team - ARED ARCHITECTS was founded in 2023 by Akaike Kazuhito, the Managing Director and a first-class architect. With professional experience at both top contractors and design studios, he is highly versed in architectural designs ranging from small houses to large complexes, and everything from innovative concepts to solid details. Skilled at one-of-a-kind sculptural design, he strives to unlock projects' fullest potential while emphasizing client empathy. The firm provides comprehensive services encompassing architecture, furniture, product design and creative direction. So far, ARED has successfully completed a diverse range of projects in close cooperation with various clients.

RAD+ar | Archicasting

Project Name: Chicken Hero Pavilion Design Team: RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + Architecture) Location: Jakarta, Indonesia Project Area: 900 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: Mario Wibowo Feature: Project - Nestled within Jakarta's Urban Forest, the Chicken Hero Pavilion by RAD+ar emerges as a radical reimagining of sustainable design and community engagement. Seamlessly blending into the landscape like an organic hill, this innovative structure transcends traditional architectural boundaries, transforming a simple chicken coop into a provocative platform for social and environmental transformation. Designed as a prototype for decentralized sustainability, the pavilion tackles Indonesia's critical food waste challenge through an ingenious circular economy approach. The project addresses the country's alarming statistic of approximately 300 kilograms of food waste per person annually by creating a symbiotic ecosystem that turns waste into resource. The pavilion's architectural brilliance lies in its multifunctional design. A cave-like tunnel leads visitors into a cross-ventilated space illuminated by indirect daylight, with a green roof crafted from reclaimed bamboo. Over just four weeks, the structure processed food waste from six on-site restaurants, generating approximately 40 eggs daily and converting organic materials into garden compost. More than just a structure, the Chicken Hero Pavilion is a social catalyst. By creating a reciprocal space between visitors and chickens, RAD+ar challenges existing stigmas around backyard poultry farming. The design embodies the concept of "Glocalization" - a hyper-local solution with global sustainability implications. This architectural intervention represents a bold statement: sustainability can be accessible, engaging, and fundamentally transformative when designed with creativity, empathy, and deep understanding of local contexts. Design Team - RAD+ar is a Jakarta-based architecture studio founded in 2017 by Antonius Richard. Longlisted for Dezeen Awards 2021 emerging architecture studio of the year, the firm focuses on extending the creative application of adaptive tropical architecture. RAD+ar believes true sustainability and architecture can only be achieved by inspiring the masses. The studio explores the core values of architecture in tropical and developing contexts. Its projects connect culture and nature, showcasing how to escape historical notions of tropicality. RAD+ar promotes sustainable architecture through a provocative, experimental, and research-driven approach. The firm aims to redefine the value of architecture in globalization and localization, expanding the limits of what we call "architecture."

Furuya Design | Archicasting

Nestled in the idyllic countryside of Shanghai's Pudong district, the Pudong Villa by Atelier Li presents a serene retreat that harmoniously blends contemporary design with traditional Chinese garden philosophy. Commissioned for two families seeking a weekend escape from urban life, the architects demolished an existing structure to erect this striking new residence. Central to the concept is the integration of nature into the living spaces, drawing inspiration from classical courtyard houses. Multiple internal courtyards and skylights filter in natural light, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor. The elongated main volume dramatically cantilevers over 21 meters towards an adjacent orchard, creating expansive sheltered zones that expand the living areas. While adhering to local rural building codes with prescribed heights and a sloping tiled roof, the bold modern form makes an architectural statement. The interior layout deftly arranges communal spaces around the courtyards, fostering interaction between family members. Open-plan living areas and a double-height living room all open onto these verdant pocket gardens. By introducing distinctly contemporary elements into the countryside setting, the Pudong Villa reimagines the typology of the Chinese rural residence for the 21st century. The innovative design reconciles urban comfort with rural tranquillity, celebrating nature while providing a peaceful oasis tailored for multi-generational living. Founded in 2018, Atelier Li is a Shanghai-based architectural practice led by principals Li Bai and Li Xuan. Rising 380 feet above St. Louis, this landmark building creates a striking presence in the urban landscape through its distinctive leaf-shaped plan and tiered massing. The building's most remarkable feature is its four-story tier strategy, where each residential cluster is complemented by extended outdoor spaces. This innovative facade design provides private terraces for a quarter of the apartments while creating shared social spaces atop the green roof podium. Through carefully calculated angles, each unit maximizes views of Forest Park to the west and the Gateway Arch to the east. In terms of environmental performance, the building's leaf-shaped plan and tiered massing serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, resulting from deep analysis of site orientation and environmental factors. This design significantly reduces the overall energy load while enhancing occupant comfort. The geometric composition of the facade acts as a passive solar control system while creating dynamic light effects, establishing a harmonious dialogue between architecture and nature. The project stands out for its innovative interpretation of sustainable design, where environmental efficiency, user experience, and architectural aesthetics converge to create a living space that is both forward-looking and deeply connected to its urban context. Design Team - Studio Gang, established in 1997 by visionary architect Jeanne Gang, has evolved into a globally influential architecture and urban design practice with strategic presence in Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, and Paris. The firm's distinctive methodology integrates rigorous research, material innovation, and ecological awareness, consistently pushing the boundaries of sustainable architecture and social impact. Under Gang's leadership, the practice has developed a remarkable portfolio that demonstrates their commitment to connecting people with their environment through thoughtful design interventions. The firm's approach is characterized by its deep engagement with ecological systems and innovative material applications, as evidenced in projects like the Populus Hotel and the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation at the American Museum of Natural History. Their work extends beyond traditional architectural services to encompass research initiatives and public advocacy, particularly in areas of environmental stewardship and social equity. The practice's integrated approach to sustainability and community engagement has earned them numerous accolades, including the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture and TIME magazine's recognition of Jeanne Gang as one of the most influential people in the world. Currently led by Gang alongside key partners, the firm maintains a collaborative studio culture that emphasizes knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary innovation. Their commitment to environmental responsibility is reflected not only in their designs but also in their operational practices, including initiatives to close the gender wage gap and promote diversity in architectural practice. Studio Gang's portfolio spans cultural centers, educational facilities, urban residential developments, and civic spaces, each demonstrating their ability to create architecture that responds to local contexts while addressing global challenges. Project Name: House of Cross Location: Beijing, China Design Team: Chaoffice Total Floor Area: 334 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Zhu Yumeng Feature: Project - Located in Beijing's Tongzhou District, the House of Cross represents Chaoffice's response to post-pandemic lifestyle shifts, designed as a single-story residence that accommodates three generations living and working together. Facing strict building regulations—residential plots limited to single-story structures with eaves no higher than 3 meters—the design team transformed these constraints into creative opportunities. The 334-square-meter residence adopts an innovative cross-shaped layout with wings extending in different directions and joining at their ends. To maintain the proportions of the central courtyard, the side wings were consolidated and pulled away from the perimeter, creating a narrow secondary courtyard at the rear. Similarly, the north-facing main hall was shifted southward, opening up a backyard. Each wing now enjoys dual-sided natural light, while the entire courtyard benefits from uninterrupted sightlines. The building's structural framework ingeniously recedes toward the roof ridge, with structural elements converging at the shear wall cores to form a cross-shaped structural anchor. The house, much like a mushroom, is supported at its center while its eaves extend outward in all directions. Freeing the perimeter from structural constraints allows the façade to dissolve, merging interior and exterior spaces. The cross-shaped layout creates a view that moves from near to far—courtyard, house, courtyard again—revealing overlapping scenes of daily life. The connection between glass façade frames and eaves was carefully designed: the eaves beams were lowered to 2.4 meters, allowing the eaves to extend downward like the edge of a mushroom cap. This solution maintains a comfortable ceiling height while creating a sense of shelter—whether under bright sun or during heavy rain, those sitting by the window feel like small creatures nestled beneath a mushroom cap, protected and at ease. The cross-configuration spatial arrangement addresses the needs of multi-generational living, with private spaces positioned at the four terminal points, providing a balance of intimacy and separation. Grandparents, parents, children, and guests each have their private spaces, while the central areas naturally become public zones where the family gathers and interacts. House of Cross creates an architectural language that is both contemporary and rooted in place through the combination of materials like laminated eucalyptus plywood and bridge-cut-off aluminum alloy windows, demonstrating Chaoffice's design philosophy of addressing real-life challenges rather than pursuing abstract traditions. Design Team - Chaoffice was officially established by Cheng Zhi in 2017, initially named as an observation and research institution parallel to "OEU Studio." Taking on approximately three projects annually, it has maintained the scale of a small studio, primarily led by Cheng Zhi with occasional collaboration from junior architects. After obtaining his master's degree in 2008, Cheng Zhi worked at URBANUS Beijing for six years before founding "OEU Studio" with university classmates and transitioning to independent practice in 2017. Chaoffice's methodology transcends conventional architectural practice, positioning design as one facet of a multidisciplinary approach that includes research, writing, documentation, and theoretical exploration. The studio's work is characterized by its response to site-specific conditions and hidden spatial orders, informed by Cheng's ongoing research projects such as "Impermanence in Various Forms"—an investigation into enduring urban elements that transform over time, echoing Aldo Rossi's theories on urban permanences. Cheng's design approach places architecture in parallel with observational research, reading, and writing, which mutually nourish each other to form a unique design perspective. Chaoffice's projects demonstrate a thoughtful reconciliation of regulatory constraints, spatial innovation, and contextual sensitivity, as exemplified by the House of Cross in Beijing's Tongzhou District.

LABarq | Archicasting

  • HOUSE X Tsutsumi & Associates | Archicasting

Project Name: HOUSE X - Universal Design Residence with an Outdoor Bath Location: Beijing, China Design Team: TSUTSUMI & ASSOCIATES Area: 235 m² Completion: May 2024 Photography: Misae Hiromatsu / Ruijing Photo Feature: Project - Japanese architecture firm TSUTSUMI & ASSOCIATES has completed HOUSE X, a thoughtfully renovated ground-floor apartment in Beijing that reimagines barrier-free design through the lens of natural light and ventilation. The 235-square-meter residence challenges conventional approaches to accessible living spaces by treating sunlight and airflow as fundamental aspects of universal design. The project, which was completed in May 2024, transforms a previously dark apartment with European mansion-inspired level changes into a luminous, fluid space that seamlessly accommodates three generations. The renovation was commissioned by a client in his 50s who lives with his elderly parents, prompting architect Yoshimasa Tsutsumi to develop an innovative approach to accessibility that goes beyond standard solutions. "We believe that healthy light and pleasant breezes moving freely within the home represent the ultimate form of barrier-free design," explains Tsutsumi. This philosophy manifests in practical interventions, such as raising the living room floor by 30 centimeters to create a unified level throughout the main living spaces, while cleverly incorporating a sunken seating area that doubles as a coffee space. The most striking feature is perhaps the Japanese-inspired outdoor bath, connected to the main bedroom's bathroom via a wooden corridor. The bathing area demonstrates the studio's nuanced approach to privacy and openness – its lower section remains open while wooden sliding doors enclose the space from waist height. Angled louvers in the roof structure shield from overlooking views while maintaining a sense of connection with the sky. Throughout the apartment, conventional accessibility elements are reimagined with architectural sophistication. Handrails double as lighting fixtures, avoiding the institutional aesthetic often associated with assisted living spaces. Sliding doors are designed to accommodate wheelchair access, while a walk-through toilet anticipates future caregiving needs without compromising on design integrity. The firm's emphasis on natural light and ventilation responds directly to what they identify as a common problem in Chinese residential developments – the tendency to prioritize floor area at the expense of environmental quality. By positioning all bathrooms along exterior walls and incorporating numerous sliding doors, the design ensures that daylight penetrates deep into the living spaces while facilitating cross-ventilation. This holistic approach to universal design, where accessibility meets atmospheric quality, represents a significant departure from conventional barrier-free architecture, offering a new paradigm for multi-generational living spaces in urban China. Design Team - Founded in 2009 in Beijing by Yoshimasa Tsutsumi (born 1978 in Fukuoka), TSUTSUMI & ASSOCIATES has evolved into a distinguished international architectural practice with offices in both Tokyo and Beijing. The practice, officially registered as a First-Class Architectural Firm (Tokyo Governor Registration No. 65108), represents a unique bridge between Japanese architectural precision and contemporary Chinese urban development. Tsutsumi, who graduated from the University of Tokyo's Department of Architecture in 2003, refined his expertise at SAKO Architects (2004-2008) before establishing his own practice. The firm's trajectory has been marked by strategic expansion, with the opening of a Hiroshima office in 2020 and relocation to Tokyo in 2022. The studio's portfolio has garnered international recognition through numerous prestigious awards, including the JCD Design Award Gold and Silver Medals and the Ryue Nishizawa Prize in Japan, the DFA Award Silver Prize in Hong Kong, and distinctions from global competitions such as The Architecture MasterPrize (USA) and A' Design Award Silver Prize (Italy). Their work is characterized by a sophisticated integration of spatial efficiency, cultural sensitivity, and innovative barrier-free solutions, particularly evident in residential and commercial projects across Asia. Operating from two strategic locations - their Tokyo headquarters in Itabashi and their Beijing office in Chaoyang District - TSUTSUMI & ASSOCIATES continues to expand its influence in the global architectural landscape, specializing in context-responsive design solutions that bridge Eastern and Western architectural paradigms.

  • North of Brooklyn Pizzeria MRDK | Archicasting

Envisioned as a contemplative living room hovering above the landscape, this idyllic retreat beckons visitors to expand their perception of time and space amidst nature's tranquility. The library's form embodies a striking duality – a grounded, carved monolith seamlessly transitions into a hovering, transparent prism. This interplay of volumes calibrates distinct vantage points, framing the vast expanse of the surrounding fields and sky. The ground floor houses a cozy lobby café, while a carved corridor ushers guests upwards into the prismatic reading sanctuary above. Minimizing its footprint, the library's core columns cluster to liberate the perimeter, dedicating it entirely to the centerpiece reading room. Here, a panoramic veranda cantilevers 4 meters outwards, creating the illusion of levitating over the terrain. An expansive oak bookshelf winds its way around the core, ascending towards the ceiling like an ancient tree. Its illuminated branches rhythmically pair with double-glazed curtain walls, outlining intimate reading alcoves that offer distant vistas. More than a repository of books, the Horizon Library serves as a cultural nexus, poised to invigorate the region's educational tapestry while fostering a dialogue between nature's tranquility and the vibrance of communal gathering. Design Team - Founded in 2017 at MIT by principals Jinhui Huang and Pak Kin Chan, Protoscapes is a vanguard architecture and urban design practice based in Xiamen, China.

Project Name: Sagehaus Office Garden Location: Jakarta, Indonesia Design Team: RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + architecture) Total Floor Area: 2000 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Mario Wibowo Feature: Project - Sagehaus Office Garden is a specialized office for athletic sportswear products located in West Jakarta, designed by RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + architecture). This project aimed to resolve the paradox of balancing two objectives: maintaining a flexible and creative blank canvas of possibilities on one hand, and providing a secure and efficient learning and working environment on the other. The design strategy creates three visually connected horizontal zones: a public space for combined creative and social activities below, effective and controlled office environments in the middle, and a flexible public garden activity on the rooftop above. Sagehaus Office is a "Dome for Wind," a reversed carved space designed to channel and intensify Jakarta's gentle breezes through shaded, sheltered gathering and social spaces, creating a pleasant and safe environment for all staff activities. The enclosed breezeways between the blocks are designed for maximum comfort and interaction, offering spaces for groups of various sizes to engage and relax. This wind-directing design has proven to be both successful and extremely comfortable, providing constant cooling breezes despite Jakarta's high humidity. Meanwhile, the rooftop is designed as a large recreational green roof and office gym. The design sought to integrate architectural strategies that ensure efficient energy performance while establishing the building's character. The public space at the core of the site was treated as a carved monolith to provide sufficient thermal mass. Simultaneously, the design of the staircases serves as a focal point, encouraging use and providing a viable alternative to elevators. In terms of the facades, large openings were carved to minimize direct heat from the sun while still allowing ample natural light through the "slices and punctures" of the facade. All recessed and indirect openings were carefully designed to avoid direct solar radiation and, consequently, the greenhouse effect. From a user functionality perspective, the mixed-use design conceals a high-security file room at the deep center, surrounded by flexible open-plan workspaces, and flanked by a series of mini to large meeting rooms, with a foyer pocket garden and casual spaces in between. This layout fosters short connections within each floor, facilitating movement from conventional desks to meeting rooms, lounges, and leisure spaces within the building, all designed with democratic access and subtle variations across different levels. A consistent feature throughout all floors is that services and restrooms are located in separate wings, designed as garden toilets to ensure optimal comfort in a tropical context while minimizing energy consumption. Design Team - RAD+AR (Research Artistic Design + architecture) is an Indonesian based group of architects, designers, and thinkers operating within the field of design practice, architecture, urbanism, research and development which focus to bring the idea of Architecture as an art of utilizing space in most provocative to utopian-research based approach. Formed from the curiosity of the advancement of Tropical Architecture by Antonius Richard Rusli, RAD+AR believes that in order to shape a better and more sustainable version of today's challenges, architecture can profitably be one of the most worth-exploring field. RAD+AR explores and experiments to redefine the value of architecture in both globalization and localization. Beyond spaces and building, it connects history, narrative of cultures, expanding beyond limits of what we call architecture. Collaboration of multidisciplinary at each portfolio through systematic integration, allow RAD+AR to always innovate and experiments.

This single-family dwelling, completed in 2022, replaces an older structure while maintaining a deep connection to the site's rich history and breathtaking landscape. The architects faced the challenge of blending traditional elements with modern aesthetics, resulting in a sophisticated interpretation of vernacular architecture. Double-sloped roofs and wood cladding nod to the region's heritage, while clean lines and expansive glazing anchor the home firmly in the present. What sets the Orford House apart is its thoughtful response to the site's topography. The design cleverly utilizes the sloping terrain to create a multi-level living experience that mimics the layers of the forest. From the garden level's grounded spaces to the canopy-like upper floor, the home offers a unique spatial journey that echoes the experience of walking through the woods. The project's commitment to environmental sensitivity is evident in its compact footprint and use of existing site elements. Large windows frame spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and forests, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior. This harmonious dialogue between architecture and nature creates a retreat that is both a testament to contemporary design and a celebration of its picturesque setting. Design Team - Founded in 2007, Thellend Fortin Architectes has established itself as a leading force in Quebec's architectural landscape. Wutopia Lab | Archicasting

Project:Flickering Peak Team:Wutopia Lab Size:2606 m² Location:Hainan, China Feature: Project - In the heart of Wanning, Hainan, a remarkable architectural marvel has emerged, transforming the landscape of a once-humble coffee plantation into a beacon of cultural significance. The Yushan Lanfeng Art Center, meticulously crafted by Wutopia Lab, stands as a testament to human resilience and artistic innovation. This 2,606-square-meter masterpiece, completed in 2024, reimagines the concept of a traditional art center. Drawing inspiration from the rich history of Indonesian-Chinese immigrants who cultivated the land, the design ingeniously weaves together elements of nature, mythology, and contemporary architecture. The centerpiece of the project is a striking reinterpretation of the classic Chinese "one pool, three mountains" motif. Three distinct structures, shrouded in semi-transparent membranes, emerge like mystical peaks from a serene artificial lake. This visual spectacle not only pays homage to the pioneers who forged a new life in this once-wild terrain but also creates a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow. Wutopia Lab's innovative use of Ferrari membranes with varying perforation rates achieves a gradient effect, making the buildings appear to flicker and fade into the sky. This ethereal quality transforms the complex from mere buildings into living, breathing entities that respond to the intense Hainan sunlight. The interior spaces are equally captivating, with a masterful choreography of pathways that guide visitors through a journey of ascent, mimicking the experience of mountain climbing. From the ground-floor hall, where water seems to flow indoors, to the rooftop coffee garden offering panoramic views, each level unveils new perspectives and experiences. At night, the art center undergoes a magical metamorphosis. Carefully orchestrated lighting transforms the translucent peaks into a kaleidoscope of colors, symbolizing the diverse aspirations of the community. This duality of day and night, of serenity and vibrancy, encapsulates the project's essence as a bridge between past and future, tradition and innovation. The Yushan Lanfeng Art Center is more than just a building; it's a narrative etched in architecture, a celebration of cultural heritage, and a bold vision for the future of public spaces in China. Design Team - Founded in 2013 by the visionary duo Yu Ting and Min Erni, Wutopia Lab has rapidly emerged as a trailblazing force in contemporary Chinese architecture. Based in Shanghai, this innovative practice has carved out a unique niche by seamlessly blending traditional Chinese cultural elements with avant-garde design principles, creating a distinctive architectural language that resonates with the zeitgeist of 21st-century China. At the helm of Wutopia Lab, Yu Ting, armed with a doctorate from Tsinghua University, brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at the East China Architecture and Design Institute (ECADI). The firm's design philosophy is deeply rooted in the concept of "magical realism," which manifests in their projects as a harmonious fusion of complexity and simplicity, tradition and modernity. Wutopia Lab's portfolio is characterized by its diverse array of typologies, ranging from cultural institutions to mixed-use developments. Their projects, such as the Eight Tenths Garden and the Slow Yangzhou × Xinhua Bookstore, exemplify their mastery in creating multifaceted spatial experiences that challenge conventional architectural paradigms. The firm's innovative use of materials, particularly their exploration of translucent and perforated facades, has become a hallmark of their design approach. By rejecting both "obsessive minimalism" and "exaggerated scenes," Wutopia Lab has cultivated a unique architectural vocabulary that celebrates contradiction and juxtaposition. Their designs often incorporate elements of urban storytelling, weaving narratives that reflect Shanghai's rich cultural tapestry and contemporary urban dynamics. This approach has positioned Wutopia Lab at the forefront of China's architectural renaissance, offering a fresh perspective on the built environment that is both locally rooted and globally relevant.

Project:Restaurant Iris Team:NORM Architects + Kvorning Design Size:1000 m² Location:Rosendal, Norway Feature: Project - Perched atop the shimmering waters of Norway's Hardangerfjord, Restaurant Iris emerges as a culinary beacon within the innovative Salmon Eye installation. This Michelin-starred dining destination, nestled inside a floating ellipsoid structure, marries cutting-edge architecture with intimate gastronomy. NORM Architects' interior design deftly navigates the tension between the brutalist exterior, crafted by Kvorning Design, and the need for a welcoming dining environment. The restaurant's design ethos revolves around contrast and harmony. Undulating curves and bespoke furniture echo the structure's organic form, while warm materials like walnut wood and plush carpets soften the steel shell. This juxtaposition creates a cocoon of comfort amidst the vast Nordic landscape. Intimacy is cultivated through a thoughtful division of space, guiding diners on a journey of discovery. The sensory experience is heightened by panoramic views of fjords and mountains, visible through the building's fish-scale-like exterior. Sustainability takes center stage, both in the menu and the design approach. Local ingredients and a focus on marine life inform the culinary offerings, while the interior's natural textures and flowing lines reinforce a connection to the surrounding ecosystem. More than just a restaurant, Salmon Eye functions as a floating aquaculture center, its striking form visible for miles. This dual-purpose structure exemplifies a new paradigm in experiential architecture, where education, gastronomy, and design converge in a truly unique setting. Design Team - Established in 2008, Norm Architects has emerged as a pivotal force in contemporary Danish design, reimagining the built environment through a lens of sensory engagement and minimalist sophistication. This Copenhagen-based multidisciplinary studio, led by founding partners Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn Von Lotzbeck, has cultivated a distinctive approach that seamlessly blends architecture, interior design, and industrial design. Drawing on 15 years of international experience, Norm Architects' portfolio spans residential, hospitality, and commercial projects, each exemplifying their commitment to haptic design principles. The firm's ethos centers on distilling complex design challenges into pure, resonant forms that address universal human needs while remaining acutely attuned to site-specific contexts. Norm's design philosophy is rooted in a meticulous process of reduction, seeking the precise moment when function and aesthetics achieve perfect equilibrium. This pursuit of essence results in spaces and objects that not only satisfy visual criteria but also engage the full spectrum of human senses, fostering a profound connection between user and environment. The studio's work is characterized by a nuanced understanding of materiality, light, and proportion, informed by both Scandinavian design traditions and global contemporary influences. By re-sensualizing architecture through tactile experiences, Norm Architects creates environments that resonate on a deeply human level, addressing innate desires for belonging, autonomy, and identity.

Project Name: Aranya Jinshanling Wilderness Botanical Garden Location: Chengde City, Hebei Province, China Design Firm: STUDIO YUDA Area: 199 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photographer: Liu Songkai Feature: Project - STUDIO YUDA has completed the Aranya Jinshanling Wilderness Botanical Garden, a contemplative concrete and timber structure nestled within the rugged landscape of Chengde, China, that serves as both an educational facility and a sanctuary for native plant species. The 199-square-meter building, completed in 2024, emerges from its mountainous context as a sophisticated interplay between architectural intervention and natural wilderness. The design team, led by Guo Yuchen, Yang Siqi, and Zhan Bodi, has crafted a space that deliberately blurs the boundaries between built form and organic environment. "The project's core mission was to create a space that doesn't merely display nature but actively participates in its preservation while fostering a deeper human connection with the wilderness," explained the architects. The building's most striking feature is its U-shaped layout, which wraps around a central courtyard. Floor-to-ceiling windows have been strategically positioned to capture natural light and create dynamic shadow play with interior plantings, while the relocated northern entrance guides visitors through a carefully choreographed journey past monolithic rocks and indigenous vegetation. The two-story structure houses an exhibition space on the ground floor, while the upper level – distinguished by its generous height and abundant skylights – functions as a workshop space for botanical education and craft activities. This vertical programming creates a narrative journey from observation to active engagement with nature. Materials were chosen for their ability to age gracefully and complement the surrounding landscape. Raw concrete pathways and structural elements provide a contemporary counterpoint to ancient stone formations, while methadone pine boards and reclaimed timber introduce warmth and tactility to the interior spaces. Perhaps most notably, the project demonstrates remarkable restraint in its detailing. The architects have eschewed decorative elements in favor of allowing the inherent beauty of materials and natural light to define the space, creating what they describe as "a sanctuary where wilderness is not merely observed but experienced as an integral part of daily life." Design Team - STUDIO YUDA, established in 2016 with dual headquarters in Shanghai and Nashville, is an emerging multidisciplinary design practice that has rapidly gained recognition for its innovative approach to architectural design, landscape architecture, interior design, and installation art. The firm was co-founded by four visionary architects: Guo Yuchen, Zhan Bodi, Yang Siqi, and Alex Darsinos, who collectively bring diverse international perspectives to their practice. The studio's design philosophy is deeply rooted in the exploration of spatial narratives through materiality, chromatic composition, and tectonic expression. Their work demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the dialectic between ephemerality and permanence in architectural discourse, consistently pushing the boundaries of contemporary design while maintaining a profound respect for context and human experience. Operating across various scales and typologies, STUDIO YUDA has developed a distinctive portfolio characterized by its thoughtful integration of form, function, and phenomenological considerations. The practice's commitment to experimental design methodologies, coupled with rigorous attention to construction detailing, has established them as an influential voice in China's emerging architectural scene. Based in Shanghai's historic Xuhui District, the studio continues to expand its practice through a collaborative approach to design, fostering dialogue between Eastern and Western architectural traditions.
