Herzog & de Meuron's Bélair-Monange winery emerges from the renowned vineyards of Saint-Émilion as a sculptural monolith, combining heritage and innovation. The Swiss architects have crafted a harmonious dialogue between an existing 1845 stone house and a striking new concrete volume conceived for modern winemaking needs. With the region's medieval quarries and monolithic churches as inspiration, the concrete monolith is partially buried to respect the historic context while optimizing functions like temperature control. Its ochre hue and textured surface subtly reference the existing stone house, which has been revitalized with recessed infills marking former openings like a palimpsest. A cantilevered roof extends from the old house over the new cellars, tying the ensemble together and offering covered spaces that open onto the vineyards during harvest season. Natural light filters in through vertical slits that subdivide the monumental mass. The interior centerpiece is a textured concrete passageway, whose walls are imprinted with an intricate pattern from a 1504 Albrecht Dürer etching also featured on the estate's wine labels. This unique artistic detail connects the architecture to St-Émilion's vinicultural heritage in an immersive promenade through the wine-making process. With an elegant juxtaposition of old and new, inert mineral masses and delicate lace-like embellishments, Bélair-Monange pays tribute to its remarkable terroir through a refined symbiosis of landscape and contemporary architecture. Founded in 1978 in Basel, Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron has emerged as one of our time's most influential and acclaimed architectural practices. Chiasmus Partners | Archicasting

Project Name: Rosemary Cafe Location: Seongnam City, South Korea Design Team: Chiasmus Partners Total Floor Area: 570 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Namsun Lee Feature: Project - Nestled beside the Daewang Reservoir in Seongnam, South Korea, the Rose Mary Cafe by Chiasmus Partners emerges as a poetic architectural statement that dissolves boundaries between built form and natural landscape. Completed in 2024, this 570-square-meter project comprises two distinct buildings ingeniously connected by a central staircase that functions as both physical and conceptual bridge. The cafe's most striking feature is its DNA-like spiral structure that organically connects four interior spaces across two floors, plus rooftop areas. This innovative spatial organization creates a continuous flow between the legally separated buildings, resulting in six interconnected zones that each frame distinctive views of the surrounding environment. Chiasmus Partners, led by architects Hyunho Lee, Chika Nomura, and James Wei Ke, have masterfully employed curved geometries throughout the design. The facade's sweeping curves maximize exposure to the panoramic vistas of Daewang Reservoir and the forested Inreungsan Mountain backdrop. These curves continue seamlessly from exterior to interior, creating pavilion-like spaces that appear to float within the landscape. The architectural envelope features three layers of curved balconies stacked vertically, complemented by crystal glass curtain walls that reflect the transparent qualities of water and evoke the layered fog that often shrouds the surrounding mountains. This material strategy creates a constantly changing dialogue between the building and its setting as light conditions shift throughout the day. Inside, curved ceilings mirror the exterior's fluid forms, while columns appear to flow downward from above, creating a cohesive spatial experience. By maintaining material continuity between inside and out, the architects have achieved a sense of singular, unified space despite the building's complex organization. Conceived as a leisure destination where visitors can experience nature from an elevated perspective, Rose Mary Cafe strips away unnecessary functional elements to create contemplative spaces that prioritize the surrounding landscape. The result is an architectural pavilion that serves as both frame and canvas for experiencing the natural beauty of its setting. Design Team - Chiasmus Partners was founded in New York in 2005, with current offices in Seoul and Beijing. This international architectural firm is led by three principal partners: Hyunho Lee, Chika Nomura, and James Wei Ke, with a design team that includes talented professionals such as Yeongwoo Son and Seongyeol Lee. The firm focuses on various types of architectural projects, encompassing cultural facilities, educational institutions, commercial developments, and residential projects. Their representative works include the Kyunghee University Campus Masterplan (Space21), the IFEZ Arts Center in Incheon, and numerous award-winning residential projects. Hyunho Lee is qualified with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and currently serves as the Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Hongik University, while being a partner at Chiasmus Partners since 2006. Chika Nomura holds Japanese architectural qualifications and has been a partner at Chiasmus Partners since 2017, also serving as an adjunct professor at Hongik University's College of Architecture and Urban Planning. James Wei Ke has been a partner at Chiasmus Partners since 2006 and previously worked as a senior designer at Atelier FCJZ in Beijing. Chiasmus's design methodology is built on rigorous investigation of each site's inherent qualities, resulting in architectural solutions where form and content become inseparable expressions of function and meaning. The firm has received numerous honors, including the 2018 Architecture Master Prize, the 2018 World Architecture Award, and nomination for the 2022 Dezeen Award. They believe in the magical ability of architecture to preserve, transform, and intensify the essential qualities of places and human experience. Their work resonates with both contemporary design discourse and timeless architectural principles. 2024 Previous Next

2025 Previous Next

Ateliers O-S architectes | Archicasting

Harmonizing massiveness and porosity, the Samuel Paty School Group by Ateliers O-S architectes presents a bold yet permeable presence in the Devèze district of Béziers, France. Centered around a striking longitudinal volume that adapts to the site's topography, the single-story primary school building offers a human-scaled facade to the street. The building's defining element is its sanded concrete materiality, unifying the roof and elevations into one seamless composition blending form and volume. This mineral mass contrasts with the interior's scalable lightness, where classrooms open generously onto playgrounds under soaring metal gantries. Floor-to-ceiling glazing maximizes this connection between indoors and out. Outdoors, the design preserves mature trees while introducing terraced landscaping that blurs built and natural environments. A large entrance canopy with circular skylights shelters a welcoming forecourt and gardens guiding pupils from the street to the halls. Within, spatial choreography responds to user needs. Double-height volumes energize communal areas, while the principal's office strategically overlooks the central playground. Corridors are conceived as exterior but sheltered spaces mediating between classrooms and courtyards. Throughout, the robust concrete shell and lightweight interior finishes establish a compelling dialogue of complementary contrasts. Founded in 2007 after formative experiences at OMA and West8 in Rotterdam, Ateliers O-S architectes is a Paris-based practice helmed by partners Vincent Baur, Guillaume Colboc, and Gaël Le Nouëne. The firm embraces a neo-artisanal approach, consciously mastering the entire design and construction process from conception through execution. Ateliers O-S's portfolio spans public facilities, social housing, and cultural venues across France. Their works are characterized by a judicious sense of scale, fostering social interaction and spatial courtesy. The architects probe and unveil the latent potentials of site-specific uses and activities. This exploratory approach yields architectures replete with unexpected spatial treasures while projecting an alchemical distinctiveness. The firm's accolades include an Eiffel Award (2021), Architecture & Sustainable Construction Awards from CAUE regional bodies, and international competition distinctions. Their built works have been featured in publications like Pavillon Français's catalog for the 2016 Venice Biennale. With a dedicated team including associates Carole Petit, Eléonore Lecoq and others, Ateliers O-S architectes continues advancing its design philosophy premised on evolution, contextrespnsiveness and the revelation of untapped programmatic possibilities. Previous Next

LOVE ARCHITECTURE | Archicasting

Feature: Project - In a dense Tokyo neighborhood, architect YUKIO ASARI of Love Architecture has carved out a remarkable urban refuge with "Renzankyo - Urban Mountain Residence." Situated at the end of a cul-de-sac and hemmed in by neighboring buildings, the site initially felt enclosed and oppressive. However, Asari's ingenious design transforms this challenging plot into an immersive architectural experience inspired by traditional Japanese tea houses and gardens. The U-shaped building hugs the boundaries, shielding residents from the surrounding urban fabric while creating an intricate procession of interior pathways and exterior spaces. Asari masterfully plays with perspectives, blurring the lines between inside and out. From the central courtyard, the staggered gabled roofs evoke a serene mountain landscape, while rooms offer framed views reminiscent of meticulously composed tea garden scenery. Material choices further enhance the poetic vision. Charred cedar cladding conjures images of dusk-lit peaks, while interior details like mud walls, shoji screens, and bamboo mullions transport one into a traditional tea room aesthetic. Yet this romantic concept deftly merges with functional solutions tailored to daylight, privacy, and Tokyo's stringent building codes. With "Renzankyo," Asari has crafted an extraordinary "urban mountain residence" - a phenomenological oasis that allows inhabitants to viscerally experience the beauty of traditional Japanese design principles amidst the dense city fabric. Design Team - Established in 2001 by principal architect YUKIO ASARI, Love Architecture is a pioneering Tokyo-based firm renowned for its poetic reinterpretations of traditional Japanese architectural concepts and masterful contextual design solutions. Under Asari's visionary leadership, the practice has garnered numerous accolades, including multiple Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) Excellence Awards for projects like the Yaseiden Temple (2019), Jimonji-in Chapel and Cemetery (2018), and Nakano Kunmokkusō residence (2017). Love Architecture's oeuvre seamlessly amalgamates rich cultural heritage with contemporary needs. Their residential works, such as the award-winning Koganei House (2013) and Akazutsumi Housing Development (2017), deftly respond to site constraints while evoking the sublime serenity of traditional tea houses and gardens. Spiritual architecture like the Ryūzen-ji Yaseiden Temple (2016) exemplifies their profound understanding of sacred geometries and symbolic spaces. With an exceptional design team headed by Asari, a graduate of Musashino Art University, Love Architecture continues to push boundaries, crafting phenomenological experiences that redefine the intersection of the built and natural environments. Their innovative approach has cemented the firm's reputation as one of Japan's most influential and celebrated practices. Previous Next

  • ID 住宅 Wahana Architects | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Nestled within a housing complex in Yakarta, Indonesia, the recently completed ID House by Wahana Architects masterfully blends indoor and outdoor living across its 500 square meters. Guiding the design is a central goal - to create shared spaces that encourage connection between family members. This ethos manifests through thoughtful spatial arrangements across the home's three floors, culminated by a large central void that bridges communal areas. Split across tri-level floors, the home features an open-plan first floor that dissolves boundaries between living spaces and the outdoor garden. The seamless flow between interior and exterior creates a tranquil environment in harmony with nature. Upstairs, the second floor houses private bedrooms alongside a family room and home office connected by the open void. This impressive architectural feat forges cohesion between the family room below and dining area above, promoting togetherness. Crowning the home, the third floor provides quiet personal retreats with the master bedroom and children's bedrooms. Dedicated to relaxation and solitude, these rooms allow privacy while the lower levels remain communal. From its tranquil integration of indoor/outdoor to impressive floating architectural details, the ID House is a testament to design that connects. Design Team - Believing architecture transcends forms to shape lives, Wahana Architects places people at the heart of their humanistic design process. Rather than forcing inhabitable spaces to conform to rigid plans, the studio adapts flowing forms to satisfy user needs. This psychology-driven approach stems from a conviction that buildings failing user needs fail their very purpose. Success lies not in visual appeal alone but in understanding personalities, fulfilling identities, and enabling connections. Such harmony between spaces and inhabitants enables true dwelling. From initial concepts to supervised construction, Wahana Architects' holistic process attunes buildings to those they serve. Through intimate client collaboration, they craft resonant spaces where people feel understood, at home with themselves and others. Such thoughtfulness breathed life into their award-winning INDE Shortlisted and ArchDaily nominated projects. 500 m² Yakarta, INDONESIA 2023 Previous Next

The design team conceived the project as fluid "ribbons" that weave together nine new exhibition halls, three reception halls, a conference center for 9,000 delegates, and a hotel with 410 rooms. The most striking design element is the composite roof system of symmetric geometries, creating an insulated, lightweight, large-span structure providing column-free spaces that can be quickly adapted to changes in exhibitions. This modular fabrication and construction minimized the center's development time, investment, and operational costs. The center's central north-south axis serves as the primary connector between the nine exhibition halls, providing navigational clarity, maximum flexibility and efficiency, while creating a central courtyard and gathering place within sheltered outdoor event spaces and landscaped gardens. Bridges above this central courtyard connect the exhibition halls, conference center, and hotel, providing indoor circulation between event spaces. The center's exterior is defined by a pleated, deep copper-colored façade with recessed windows, thoughtfully designed to balance the immense industrial scale of the building with materiality. CIECC achieved the highest certification of China's Green Building Program, using smart building management systems with hybrid ventilation, ensuring optimum natural ventilation supported by high-efficiency HVAC equipment to enhance indoor air quality and minimize energy consumption. Rainwater collection throughout CIECC's extensive footprint, grey water recycling, and photovoltaics for on-site energy generation reduce water and energy demand from the city's municipal supply. MARS Architectes | Archicasting

2025 Previous Next

In the rapidly growing city of Nakagawa, Fukuoka, the Fukuoka Pinocchio Children's Garden emerges as a beacon of innovative educational design. Conceived by Sho Sasaki of INTERMEDIA, this nursery and kindergarten facility responds to the area's increasing population with a capacity for 216 children, making it one of the larger early education centers in the region. The architectural brilliance of the project lies in its thoughtful approach to fostering social interaction among children of different age groups. Sasaki's design introduces a unique "lunch room" concept, strategically placed between classrooms to serve as a pseudo-public space. This multifunctional area not only facilitates dining but also accommodates various activities and ceremonies, effectively breaking down barriers between different classes and encouraging a rich tapestry of social connections. Perhaps the most striking feature is the central courtyard, where Sasaki has masterfully manipulated level differences to create a seamless flow between the ground and first floors. This innovative use of space allows children to move freely between levels, promoting physical activity and visual connectivity with the rooms for younger children on the ground floor. The structure, while robust in its reinforced concrete construction, achieves a delicate balance between solidity and lightness. The use of void slabs and strategically placed steel columns creates an airy atmosphere that complements the playful nature of the space. Fukuoka Pinocchio Children's Garden stands as a testament to architecture's power to shape educational experiences, offering a nurturing environment that grows alongside the community it serves. INTERMEDIA, founded in 1989 by Nobuaki Sasaki, has emerged as a leading architectural design firm in Japan, particularly renowned for its innovative approach to educational and public spaces. The Ranch Mine | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Nestled in the breathtaking wilderness of Northwest Montana, 'Shadowbox' emerges as a striking architectural marvel that seamlessly blends modern luxury with the raw beauty of its surroundings. Designed by Montana Architect Cavin Costello of The Ranch Mine, this retreat in Whitefish offers a unique sanctuary just an hour south of the Canadian border. The residence's design draws inspiration from the glacial valleys of nearby Glacier National Park, with its silhouette mirroring the crisscrossing mountains. The exterior, clad in black standing seam metal siding with varying rib patterns, echoes the texture of pine tree bark and casts shadows that blend with the forest, creating a dramatic contrast against the lush landscape. A recessed entry clad in warm hemlock breaks the dark facade, offering a welcoming threshold and shelter from the elements. The covered patio, complete with a sauna, fire pit, and sunken hot tub, exemplifies the design's focus on communing with nature. Notably, 'Shadowbox' addresses the challenges of its Wildfire-Urban Interface location through thoughtful design choices. These include a Class A metal roof assembly, non-combustible siding, and WUI-compliant decking, demonstrating a commitment to safety without compromising aesthetics. Inside, a soaring 25-foot ceiling in the great room, coupled with panoramic windows, creates an immersive experience akin to a snow globe in winter. This innovative approach to luxury living in the heart of Montana's wilderness sets 'Shadowbox' apart as a testament to harmonious integration of architecture and nature. Design Team - Founded in 2010, The Ranch Mine has emerged as a pioneering force in contemporary residential architecture, particularly in the American Southwest. Led by the dynamic duo of Cavin Costello, Principal Architect, and Claire Costello, Chief Executive, this Phoenix-based firm has garnered widespread acclaim for its innovative, site-specific designs that seamlessly integrate with their natural surroundings.

In the heart of Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, a groundbreaking architectural project has emerged, challenging conventional notions of urban living and community spaces. The Maebashi Galleria, designed by renowned architect Akihisa Hirata, is a multifaceted complex that seamlessly integrates residential units, commercial spaces, and a vibrant central plaza. The project's most striking feature is its innovative structural composition. Twenty-six residential units, each with its own garden, are suspended above ground level, creating the illusion of a floating village. This aerial arrangement allows for an expansive public plaza beneath, fostering a unique symbiosis between private and communal spaces. Hirata's design draws inspiration from the scale of Jomon period circular settlements rather than traditional Western plazas. The result is an intimate yet open environment that invites both residents and visitors to engage with the space. The seemingly triangular floor plans of the apartments, featuring diagonal walls, establish a fluid connection with the individual gardens, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. The Maebashi Galleria transcends its functional classification as a mixed-use development. It represents a bold architectural statement that reimagines the concept of a plaza, transforming a former parking lot into a dynamic urban ecosystem. By intertwining living spaces with public amenities, the project embodies Maebashi's aspiration to "sprout with greenery," offering a new paradigm for civic architecture that is deeply rooted in its context while reaching for the sky. Founded in 2005 by visionary Japanese architect Akihisa Hirata, the eponymous Tokyo-based practice has consistently pushed the boundaries of architectural design, blurring the lines between the natural and built environments. Feature: Project - Set amidst the bustling urban environment of Seongnam-si, South Korea, the Pangyo Two Courtyards House by June Architects adeptly balances a connection to nature with privacy. The 297 sqm residence orchestrates a sculptural composition of graceful concrete forms which carve out two sunken courtyards. One courtyard sits opposite the entrance, unfolding an expansive double-height void which floods the home with natural light. The other nestles intimately alongside the living spaces. At the heart of the home is the central courtyard’s eight-and-a-half-metre tall wall constructed from a closed form concrete that offers a bold and expansive backdrop. This grand and lofty courtyard stitches together the split-level home, serving as a unifying locale where inhabitants can gather. The adjoining courtyard provides a more sheltered, private garden, sunk into the ground plane. Along its perimeter, textured concrete partitions rise up, elegantly curating views and filtering daylight into the home’s communal living areas via irregular voids. The thoughtful layout provides convenience by grouping the kitchen and laundry while still allowing for privacy in the personal quarters. By tempering external visibility via considered materiality and orientations, the Pangyo House delivers the dynamism of connection with nature alongside a refined intimacy. Design Team - Established in 2012, June Architects is led by Principal Architect 김현석, an award-winning architect recognized for his creative and responsive designs. Kim brings over a decade of international experience, having studied and practiced in France as well as South Korea. His distinguishable aesthetic balances sculptural forms with an overarching order to create spaces that are powerful yet elegant. As a firm seeking meaning and identity within architecture, June Architects pursues designs attuned to locale and context. They infuse spaces with light and connection to nature while providing convenience and comfort for inhabitants. Past projects like the Pyeong Chang Dong Brick House showcase their ability to modernize traditional forms through materiality and layout. Guided by the energy of June, the namesake month symbolizing life and growth, the firm continues to create meaningful designs through their skilled architects. June Architects upholds clever solutions that address user needs and environmental factors to provide enjoyable, sustainable buildings. Previous Next

Bull O'Sullivan Architecture | Archicasting

2025 Previous Next

Thellend Fortin Architectes | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Nestled in the heart of Quebec's Eastern Townships, the Orford House by Thellend Fortin Architectes is a striking example of contemporary residential design that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. This single-family dwelling, completed in 2022, replaces an older structure while maintaining a deep connection to the site's rich history and breathtaking landscape. The architects faced the challenge of blending traditional elements with modern aesthetics, resulting in a sophisticated interpretation of vernacular architecture. Double-sloped roofs and wood cladding nod to the region's heritage, while clean lines and expansive glazing anchor the home firmly in the present. What sets the Orford House apart is its thoughtful response to the site's topography. The design cleverly utilizes the sloping terrain to create a multi-level living experience that mimics the layers of the forest. From the garden level's grounded spaces to the canopy-like upper floor, the home offers a unique spatial journey that echoes the experience of walking through the woods. The project's commitment to environmental sensitivity is evident in its compact footprint and use of existing site elements. Large windows frame spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and forests, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior. This harmonious dialogue between architecture and nature creates a retreat that is both a testament to contemporary design and a celebration of its picturesque setting. Design Team - Founded in 2007, Thellend Fortin Architectes has established itself as a leading force in Quebec's architectural landscape. The principals bring a wealth of international experience to their practice. Lisa-Marie Fortin's background in community-based ecological residential development and Louis Thellend's expertise in large-scale institutional projects contribute to the firm's holistic approach to architecture. LIFE Architects | Archicasting

Project Name: Folded Ground Location: Seoul, South Korea Design Team: LIFE Architects Area: 1108 m² Completion: 2023 Photography: Kyungsub Shin Feature: Project - South Korean architecture firm LIFE Architects has completed a commercial building in Seoul's vibrant Hongdae district that features a distinctive folded concrete facade wrapping around three sides of its exterior. The Folded Ground Neighborhood Facility, situated adjacent to a playground near Hongik University, responds to its dynamic urban context through a sculptural approach that mediates between public and private spaces. The 1,108-square-metre building, completed in 2023, stands as a thoughtful architectural intervention in one of Seoul's most energetic neighborhoods. Led by architects Jeeyoung Han and Sooyong Hwang, the project's most striking feature is its continuous concrete skin that folds and overlaps across three facades, creating what the architects describe as an "expansive ground" that responds to the site's diversity. This structural element does more than just define the building's aesthetic – it serves as a sophisticated device for framing views and controlling the relationship between interior and exterior spaces. The diagonal concrete structure deliberately fragments external views, creating dynamic, multifaceted frames when viewed from within. This architectural strategy allows the building to maintain its commercial visibility while providing appropriate privacy for office spaces, effectively balancing the needs of a mixed-use facility in a high-traffic urban environment. What sets this project apart is how it creates moments of tranquility within Seoul's chaotic streetscape. The building's thoughtfully designed voids, balconies, and structural elements provide users with a sense of shelter from the overwhelming visual noise of Hongdae's signage and buildings, while still maintaining a connection to the neighborhood's energy. The vertical circulation through the building becomes an experiential journey, with users feeling as though they are moving through the structure itself, discovering unexpected views and spatial relationships along the way. Design Team - LIFE Architects, established in Seoul, South Korea, represents a dynamic architectural practice that seamlessly merges innovative design thinking with contextual sensitivity. Led by principals Jeeyoung Han (KIRA registered architect) and Sooyong Hwang (Adjunct Professor at Hongik University), both holding Master's degrees in Architecture, the firm has cultivated a distinctive approach to architectural interventions in urban environments. Since its founding, LIFE Architects has demonstrated their expertise through a diverse portfolio of projects, garnering recognition including the 2021 Korea Architecture Culture Award in the Emerging Architect category and the 2021 Jeju Architecture Award in the residential sector. Their design philosophy emphasizes the intricate relationship between architecture and everyday life, pushing beyond conventional architectural boundaries to explore new spatial possibilities and material applications. The practice's methodology is characterized by their rigorous investigation of urban conditions and innovative material applications, as evidenced in projects like the Folded Ground Neighborhood Facility (2023). Their work consistently demonstrates a commitment to transforming rigid urban landscapes through thoughtful architectural interventions that respond to contemporary social and environmental demands. LIFE Architects maintains a collaborative studio culture, combining the expertise of experienced designers with fresh perspectives from emerging talents. Their interdisciplinary approach integrates architecture, urban design, and research, resulting in projects that challenge traditional typologies while maintaining a strong connection to their context and users. 2023 Previous Next

Feature: Project - Nestled on a narrow 9m x 38m plot in Singapore, the House of a Thousand Leaves by ZIVY Architects reinvents the multi-generational home with an ingenious inward-looking design. Rather than segregated private zones, this three-and-a-half story semi-detached house fosters connectedness through shared spaces that encourage chance encounters between family members. The pièce de résistance is the soaring quadruple-volume atrium at the heart of the home. Oriented north-south, it capitalizes on natural ventilation with breeze block endwalls that create a wind-tunnel effect. The tapered concrete blocks filter dappled light and rain, completing the biophilic experience along with deep skylights and integrated greenery across levels. But the atrium is far more than just a sculptural centerpiece. It doubles as an open circulation core, with a continuous perforated metal mesh staircase that visually connects all floors. Full-height glazing along the interior atrium wall furthers sightlines and airflow into the adjoining living spaces occupied by individual family units. Sustainability prominently features, from solar panels to repurposed walnut chip flooring in the tea room. By cleverly intertwining nature and multi-generational living, ZIVY has crafted an adaptable tropical haven for occupants to grow together over decades to come. Design Team - Founded in 2019 by Loh Zixu and Evy Sutjahjo, ZIVY Architects is a Singapore-based practice guided by the belief that great design emerges through rigorous exploration and a keen attention to detail.

Feature: Project - Kengo Kuma's Hangzhou Xiaohe Park Reinvigorates Industrial Heritage: Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has transformed an abandoned oil factory site along the Grand Canal in Hangzhou, China into a lively public park that pays homage to the area's industrial past. The 51,000-square-metre Xiaohe Park deftly weaves new interventions with preserved historical elements, creating a rich tapestry of old and new. The standout feature is the sprawling ETFE canopy that gently drapes over the entire site, unifying the park with a gossamer, tree-like veil. Mimicking the dappled light filtering through leaves, the canopy's customized dot-printed pattern casts a soft, diffuse glow. This ephemeral cover connects the repurposed warehouses and oil tanks that have been transformed into event spaces, shops, and a sunken garden. Kuma's light touch is evident in his minimal interventions that retain the gritty, industrial essence. The original exposed concrete and red bricks are complemented by Corten steel accents, celebrating the site's heritage. Strategic openings in the canopy allow vegetation to punch through, further blurring the lines between industrial relic and natural oasis. With Xiaohe Park, Kuma presents a sensitive example of adaptive reuse that breathes new life into disused infrastructure while preserving tangible links to the past. The translucent canopy hovers like a protective aura, making this rejuvenated area a beacon along the historic Grand Canal. Design Team - Founded in 1990 by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, Kengo Kuma and Associates (KKAA) has established itself as a global leader in thoughtful, context-driven design. With a team of highly skilled professionals across offices in Tokyo, Paris, Beijing, and Shanghai, the firm has completed innovative projects in over 40 countries, seamlessly blending architecture with the natural environment. Kuma's design philosophy emphasizes a deep connection to place, using natural materials and sensitive interventions to craft buildings that elevate the human experience while respecting local cultures and ecologies. From large-scale cultural institutions to intimate residential retreats, KKAA's portfolio showcases a mastery of scale and typology, united by a commitment to sustainability and an innate understanding of how architecture can foster meaningful relationships between people and their surroundings. With Kuma at the helm, KKAA continues to push the boundaries of contemporary architecture, integrating innovative technologies and traditional craftsmanship to realize visionary designs that redefine the role of the built environment. 2025 Previous Next
