Project Name: One River North Location: River North Art District (RiNo), Denver, Colorado, USA Architecture: MAD Architects Area: 342,674 square feet / 16 floors, 187 rental units Retail Space: 9,000 square feet Completion: 2024 Photographers: Iwan Baan, Parrish Ruiz de Velasco Feature: Project - One River North stands as a groundbreaking residential development in Denver's River North Art District (RiNo), where MAD Architects has masterfully merged natural landscapes with urban architecture. The sixteen-story glass tower's most distinctive feature is its dramatic "canyon-crack" façade, which creates a four-story vertical landscape that winds through the building's exterior. This innovative design approach transforms traditional high-rise living by integrating 13,000 square feet of landscaped terraces, water features, and aerial gardens within its sculptural void. Completed in 2024, the 342,674-square-foot development houses 187 rental units and 9,000 square feet of street-level retail space. The project's architectural expression draws direct inspiration from Colorado's rugged mountain terrain and dramatic canyons, creating an unprecedented dialogue between natural and built environments. The design's most innovative aspect lies in its reinterpretation of public space in vertical development, where the carved canyon serves as both a visual spectacle and a functional amenity space that promotes community interaction and wellness. The project exemplifies MAD Architects' commitment to creating emotionally resonant architecture that transcends mere functionality. Through careful consideration of materials, spatial flow, and environmental integration, One River North achieves a remarkable balance between high-density urban housing and biophilic design principles. Design Team - MAD Architects, founded in 2004 by Ma Yansong, has established itself as a global architectural practice known for its innovative fusion of organic forms with contemporary urban contexts. Under the leadership of Ma Yansong, Dang Qun, and Yosuke Hayano, the firm has consistently pushed the boundaries of architectural expression while maintaining a profound connection to eastern philosophy and natural elements. The practice's portfolio spans diverse typologies, from cultural institutions to residential developments, with offices in Beijing, Los Angeles, Rome, and Jiaxing. Their groundbreaking work first gained international recognition with the Absolute Towers in Mississauga (2006), marking them as the first Chinese architecture firm to design an overseas landmark building. This was followed by significant cultural projects including the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles and the Harbin Opera House, each demonstrating MAD's ability to create architecture that responds to both site context and cultural narrative. MAD's design philosophy centers on the concept of "Shanshui City," which envisions architecture as a medium for connecting people with nature in urban environments. This approach has garnered numerous prestigious commissions and accolades, with their work being collected by institutions such as Centre Pompidou and M+ Museum, solidifying their position as pioneers in contemporary architectural discourse.
BXB Studio Bogusław Barnaś | Archicasting
House with a Private Giewont Mountain
- o tokyo ooc | Archicasting

Meguro Architecture Laboratory | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Challenging conventional police box design, the Fukuyama Higashi Police Station Ekimae KOBAN by Meguro Architecture Laboratory introduces a friendly and accessible concept. Located in front of Fukuyama Station, the small-scale structure reduces the distance between people and space amidst planned high-rise development in the area. Stone benches around the entrance create an inviting street furniture, transforming the police box into a public haven for relaxation. This pioneering "friendly police box" notion reimagines these typically impermeable structures as 24/7 safe spaces for pedestrians. The distinctive form pays homage to Fukuyama's heritage, echoing the city's traditional Tomo no ura lighthouse and using titanium zinc steel panels that reference Fukuyama Castle's unique steel-clad construction. Integrating the local character, the project incorporates cedar wood from Hiroshima and stone quarried nearby to revitalize industries. Innovative security features include elevated office windows preventing pedestrians from seeing inside while allowing police oversight. The plaza connects seamlessly to a new crosswalk, prioritizing pedestrian safety. With its contextual yet forward-thinking design, this pioneering police box sets a fresh benchmark for community-centered public architecture. Design Team - Established in 2014 as the successor to the award-winning Drawing Notes architectural firm founded in 2009, Meguro Architecture Laboratory is helmed by principals Mitsuru Hirai and Sayu Yamaguchi. Specializing primarily in residential projects, the Toronto-based firm has cultivated a portfolio that seamlessly blends innovative new builds with ambitious renovations, each project a testament to their meticulous and collaborative approach. Reigo & Bauer's architectural language is characterized by a striking modernity that doesn't disregard traditional vernacular forms. Instead, the firm reinterprets these elements through sculptural massing, creating a unique dialogue between past and present. Their designs often feature fresh takes on pitched roofs and other time-honored forms, eschewing the plain-box archetype often associated with modernism. The firm's design philosophy is deeply rooted in contextual sensitivity. Whether working with an existing structure's history or responding to the surrounding urban fabric, Reigo & Bauer crafts architecture that is simultaneously modern and approachable, minimalist yet humanistic. This contextual approach results in buildings that harmonize with their sites, neighbors, and historical narratives. Internally, Reigo & Bauer's spaces are a masterclass in subtle partitioning, creating interiors that are open yet carefully defined. Their restrained minimalism reduces design elements to their most essential forms, creating a quiet backdrop for playful touches and extended motifs. This approach, guided by the firm's leadership, results in unified yet varied aesthetic experiences that are uniquely attuned to each client's lifestyle and requirements. WEBSITE PROJECT

MAT Office has unveiled their latest project, the South Wind Zhoushan Summer Hotel Phase II, a thoughtful expansion of their original design completed five years ago. Located in Zhangzhou Village on Zhujiajian Island, this renovation breathes new life into two existing three-story houses, transforming them into a refined seaside retreat. The project stands out for its clever spatial reorganization and material choices that pay homage to local building traditions while introducing a contemporary aesthetic. MAT Office separated the courtyards of the seaside and hillside buildings, creating a series of interconnected spaces that flow from the beach to the hotel's inner sanctum. A striking feature is the floating bridge that links the middle courtyard to the second floor of the seaside building, offering guests unique circulation paths and viewpoints. The architects employed a palette of materials that nod to the region's architectural heritage, including terrazzo, washed stone, and cement plaster. These are juxtaposed with warm multi-layer plywood and sleek metal elements, creating a harmonious blend of textures and tones. The hillside building's facade, with its horizontal windows reminiscent of modernist designs, contrasts the village's ubiquitous white square houses. This project not only elevates the guest experience but also addresses the delicate balance between tourism development and cultural preservation in rural coastal areas. The South Wind hotel offers a "refined" homestay experience that aligns with contemporary aspirations for island living while promoting a slower, more relaxed approach to leisure. Founded in 2013 by TANG Kangshuo and ZHANG Miao, MAT Office has rapidly established itself as a formidable presence in the architectural design industry. With offices spanning Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, they strive towards imbuing every project with local, site-specific relevance, no matter its national or international location. They work in consideration of the client's vision and budget, in sympathy with the site's context and community, and in advancement of their environmental agenda. Their creative mandate is to design environments that extend beyond form and function, to arrive at solutions that are as innovate as they are enduring. With the understanding that what they create will far outlive them, their studio aims to translate every design opportunity into an iconic architectural asset with inherent, inter-generational value. Working in absence of any singular aesthetic, their output is first and foremost grounded in ingenuity and experience – where materials and processes are interrogated, adapted and refined to arrive at a compelling, considered design language that elevates each site and the way in which it engages its users. In doing so, they aim for their work to continually intrigue the mind and inspire the soul. Irrespective of the sector or scale of application, their commitment to this philosophy remains consistent – whether designing gender inclusive bathrooms for an educational institution, transforming a 100 m² inner city stand into a mixed-use multi-storey development, or custom-engineering towel rails for a private residence. Project Name: Beaufort Residential Tower Location: Zeist, The Netherlands Design Team: Orange Architects Lead Architects: Jeroen Schipper, Julija Osipenko, Rik Meijer Project Area: 4,400 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: Sebastian van Damme Collaborators: Urban Planning: wUrck Client: Slokker Vastgoed BV, NCB-Projectrealisatie Construction: Slokker Bouwgroep Feature: Project - Orange Architects has completed Beaufort, a sculptural residential tower in Zeist, Netherlands, that appears to twist as it rises through the forest canopy. The 10-story building features a striking composition of stacked volumes that rotate 90 degrees on each floor, creating a dynamic interplay of protruding balconies and recessed outdoor spaces. Located on the edge of Kerckebosch neighborhood, the tower houses 19 luxury apartments and serves as a landmark gateway to the area. The design draws direct inspiration from its woodland setting, incorporating three natural elements – sand, tree trunk, and leaf – as primary themes that manifest in both form and materiality. The building's most distinctive feature is its orchestrated arrangement of L-shaped apartments, which are mirrored on each floor and rotate relative to the level below. This geometric play results in a series of generous "outdoor rooms" that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, allowing residents to feel immersed in the surrounding forest landscape. Sustainability and biophilic design principles are woven throughout the project. The facade combines sustainable Fraké wood cladding with demountable GRC panels, while a geothermal heat pump system and rooftop solar panels help the building achieve NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards. The semi-underground parking garage is ingeniously concealed beneath a landscape of local vegetation, with features like turf bio-blocks and tree trunk retaining walls seamlessly integrating the structure into its natural context. The tower's rational structural grid belies its sculptural appearance, with a central core and perimeter columns supporting the rotating floor plates. Panoramic windows and threshold-free spaces ensure accessibility and maximize views of the forest setting, creating what Orange Architects describes as a collection of "forest villas" that stack vertically into the sky. Design Team - Founded in 2010 in Rotterdam, Orange Architects has established itself as a leading force in contemporary architecture, consistently delivering innovative solutions to complex spatial challenges. Under the leadership of Patrick Meijers and Jeroen Schipper, the practice has cultivated a distinctive approach that merges conceptual rigor with contextual sensitivity. The firm's portfolio spans multiple scales and typologies, from urban planning to bespoke interiors, with a particular emphasis on sustainable design principles encapsulated in their "World | We | Value" framework. This holistic approach integrates environmental stewardship, social dynamics, and enduring value creation into every project from inception to completion. Their recently completed Beaufort Residential Tower exemplifies the practice's design philosophy. The 4,400-square-meter development demonstrates their mastery of computational design and sustainable innovation, featuring a sophisticated rotating floor plate system that creates a dynamic architectural form while maximizing views and natural light. Operating from their headquarters in Rotterdam's city center, Orange Architects has grown to a team of 11-50 professionals, fostering a collaborative environment that combines international expertise with local knowledge. Their work is characterized by a rigorous attention to tectonics, materiality, and social impact, consistently pushing the boundaries of architectural innovation while remaining grounded in practical solutions and user-centered design principles.

Project Name: THE CONTOUR Location: Ota City, Tokyo, Japan Design Team: KAMIYA ARCHITECTS Total Floor Area: 633.07 m² Completion: January 2024 Photography: Takumi Ota, nanako ono Design Feature: Project - Along the bustling Kanshichi-dori arterial road in Tokyo's Ota City, "THE CONTOUR" residential building stands out for its innovative design approach. Situated in a highly visible and challenging urban environment, KAMIYA ARCHITECTS responded to multiple challenges including traffic noise, vibration, and pedestrian sightlines by creating a living experience that seamlessly integrates environmental protection with architectural expression. The core concept of the building is "contour line façade design," achieved through precisely carved 70 horizontal joints across a solid reinforced concrete wall, unfolding like topographical contour lines across the elevation. This bold design gesture effectively blocks noise and vibration from the arterial road while creating a striking sculptural presence that serves as an architectural landmark within urban infrastructure. The architects' ingenious solution employs an asymmetrical sectional strategy: the elevation facing Kanshichi-dori remains completely closed, while the remaining three sides open generously to the quiet residential neighborhood. This composition utilizes a load-bearing wall structure that conceals structural elements, creating unexpectedly bright and spacious interior spaces that challenge conventional perceptions of roadside residential buildings. The façade design reflects a perfect balance between function and aesthetics, with the 70 horizontal joints serving not only as visual elements but also as an organizational framework for building components. Openings, railings, construction joints, and building services all precisely align with this grid system, creating unified and coherent architectural expression while meeting complex multi-unit housing requirements. The protruding volumes at ground level extend like furniture, creating an approachable urban interface for the retail space. "THE CONTOUR" exemplifies how urban environmental challenges can be transformed into unique design opportunities. Here, the building façade serves not merely as a protective barrier but as a medium for dialogue with the city, successfully balancing residential privacy needs with urban visibility requirements, creating a contemporary residential building that possesses both sculptural quality and everyday functionality. Design Team - KAMIYA ARCHITECTS was established by Shuhei Kamiya in 2017 and has grown to become one of Japan's most internationally oriented architectural practices. Born in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture in 1982, Kamiya graduated from Waseda University Graduate School of Science and Engineering in 2007, subsequently accumulating rich international experience at two world-class architectural firms. He served as Chief Architect at Kengo Kuma and Associates for nine years, deeply learning the essence of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and detailed design. Subsequently, he worked as Senior Architect at Denmark's Bjarke Ingels Group, leading international competitions and large-scale high-rise building projects, while conducting in-depth research on Nordic design culture through the Japanese Government's Program for Upcoming Artists overseas residency. Currently, the KAMIYA team consists of multiple professionals, including qualified architects Shunsuke Sawai, Masumi Ogawa, and Takahiro Yamaguchi, providing comprehensive services including architectural design, urban planning, product design, and consulting. Operating as a first-class certified architectural practice, the firm is renowned for its cross-disciplinary innovative thinking and dedicated pursuit of craft details. KAMIYA's design philosophy emphasizes the organic integration of logical thinking, artistic innovation, and business strategy, pursuing the simultaneous presence of fun, simplicity, beauty, and comfort within singular designs. They view architecture as a medium for solving complex urban problems, carefully considering how each design decision affects the quality of living experience and urban environment. The firm has received numerous awards for design excellence, including the iF Design Award, Good Design Award, Architectural Institute of Japan Young Architect Award, and KUKAN Design Award Gold Prize. Kamiya himself actively participates in academic activities, continuing to influence contemporary architectural practice through teaching and research. PAU Architects | Archicasting
MORE Architecture | Archicasting
Nestled on a ginkgo tree-covered island in Jiaxing, China, the Ginkgo Gallery by MORE Architecture presents a refreshing counterpoint to China's recent "museum boom." This innovative cultural space eschews the trend of massive, iconic museums in favor of a more intimate and immersive experience that seamlessly blends art with nature. The gallery's design draws inspiration from the DNA of local Zhejiang villages, reimagining the museum typology as a small town to be explored. By merging the guided museum concept with a free-flow plan, MORE Architecture has created a fluid spatial experience that allows visitors to craft their own journey through interconnected yet distinct exhibition halls. At a modest 2,500 square meters, the Ginkgo Gallery stands out for its understated materiality. The entire structure is crafted from in-situ cast concrete, with rough wooden plank formwork creating a textured rhythm across facades, walls, and ceilings. This minimalist approach reduces construction waste and emphasizes the museum's spatial qualities. The gallery's relationship with its surroundings is paramount, orienting itself towards the water and landscape to forge a deep connection between culture and art. With additional spaces for education and engagement, including an auditorium, reading room, and workshop, the Ginkgo Gallery aims to make contemporary art an integral part of public life, particularly for children. Based in Amsterdam and Shanghai, MORE Architecture is a research-driven design practice founded in 2013 by Dutch architect Daan Roggeveen and Chinese-American architect Robert Chen. Jesper Kusk Arkitekter | Archicasting
