  • Hakuhodo Kettle办公室 OpenA | Archicasting

Project Name: Hakuhodo Kettle Office Location:Tokyo, Japan Design Team: OpenA Construction: Design Art Center Total Floor Area: 512.45㎡ (renovated area), 2,850.39㎡ (entire building) Design Period: October 2022 – March 2023 Construction Period: April 2023 – August 2023 Completion: August 2023 Photography: Tomomasa Kusunose Feature: Project - In a bold reimagining of workspace design, architecture firm OpenA has transformed a former traditional Japanese restaurant (ryotei) in Tokyo's Akasaka district into a revolutionary office space for advertising agency Hakuhodo Kettle. The project, led by Masanori Baba and Kazutaka Ohashi, stands as a powerful statement against conventional corporate hierarchies while addressing the evolving nature of post-pandemic work culture. Nestled in a quiet alley away from Akasaka's bustling streets, the two-story renovation deliberately subverts the secretive nature of its former life as a ryotei – traditionally a space for private business dealings behind closed doors. The architects have ingeniously "punctured" the building's enclosed structure, creating an open, flowing environment that symbolically dismantles old power structures through architectural humor. The project's centerpiece is a striking circular table positioned in a round, deconstructed entrance space beyond the traditional noren curtains. This circular motif, a shape that inherently rejects hierarchy, has been a cornerstone of the company's philosophy since its inception. The design serves as a physical manifestation of their commitment to flat organizational structure and free-flowing creative exchange. What sets this project apart is its radical departure from the typical glass-and-steel office tower. Instead of retreating into the sky, the workspace deliberately engages with street level, inviting spontaneous interactions and challenging the boundary between public and private space. The renovation maintains the building's historical elements while introducing contemporary interventions, creating a dynamic tension between preservation and innovation. The 512.45-square-meter renovation, completed in August 2023, represents a new paradigm for post-pandemic workplace design – one that prioritizes human connection and creative collaboration over traditional corporate formality. Through this thoughtful transformation, OpenA has created more than just an office; they've designed a spatial manifesto for the future of work. Design Team - Founded in 2003 by visionary architect Masataka Baba, Open A Ltd. has established itself as a leading architectural design firm that transcends traditional boundaries of architectural practice. Based in Tokyo's historic Nihonbashi district, with additional offices in Osaka and Sumida, the firm has evolved into a multidisciplinary powerhouse that combines architectural excellence with social innovation. Under the leadership of President Masataka Baba, Creative Director Kazutaka Ohashi, and Director Seiji Hashimoto, Open A has cultivated a distinctive approach to architectural design that emphasizes adaptive reuse, urban regeneration, and cultural placemaking. The firm's portfolio encompasses a diverse range of projects, from urban-scale developments to innovative temporary structures, exemplified in recent notable works such as "Slit Park YURAKUCHO" (2022) and "iti SETOUCHI" (2022). The practice's expertise spans architectural design and supervision, interior architecture, urban planning, and real estate development, with a particular focus on creating socially responsive environments. Their pioneering projects include "Tokyo R Real Estate" and "INN THE PARK," demonstrating their commitment to reimagining public spaces and urban functionality. Operating as a registered first-class architectural firm (Tokyo Governor Registration No. 53091), Open A has assembled a talented team of over 30 professionals, including architects, urban planners, and creative specialists, all dedicated to pushing the boundaries of architectural possibility while addressing contemporary social challenges. 2023 Previous Next

Project Name: Hakusha-no-Ma (White Sand Room) Location: Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan Design Team: atelier SALAD Project Area: 88㎡ Completion: April 2024 Construction: Design Office SHIROYAMA Lighting Design: Filaments Inc. Graphic Design: PRISMIC DESIGN FFE and Book Selection: OWL Photography: Kenta Hasegawa Feature: Project - In the serene coastal city of Ibusuki, Kagoshima, architects Hiroko Kakoi and Kohei Tokunaga of atelier SALAD have transformed a room at the historic Ibusuki Hakusuikan inn into a contemplative retreat that pays homage to the region's unique sand bath culture. The "Hakusha-no-Ma" (White Sand Room) represents a sophisticated reimagining of luxury hospitality that bridges traditional Japanese design with contemporary wellness concepts. The 88-square-meter space draws inspiration from Ibusuki's famous sand baths, where visitors are buried in naturally heated volcanic sand for therapeutic purposes. This distinctive local practice informed the architects' approach to creating what they describe as "a sense of returning to life's origins" within the room's design. The result is a fluid, multi-level environment that employs materials and textures evoking the tactile quality of sand, while maximizing views of the serene inland sea. The room's innovative spatial organization features several distinct yet interconnected zones. The "Tori-doma" entrance area doubles as a cultural space, with built-in bookshelves showcasing local crafts and literature. The central space is anchored by a sculptural bed frame that does more than just define the sleeping area – it creates a subtle spatial hierarchy and includes a cleverly integrated workstation, acknowledging modern travelers' needs. A slightly elevated tatami area, "Koagari," offers a meditative space overlooking the ocean, while the sunken "Hanare-doma" provides an intimate setting for evening drinks or morning coffee rituals. What sets this project apart is its thoughtful integration of traditional elements with contemporary needs. Custom sliding doors with embedded rails in the ceiling can transform the space from private to open-plan, while their lattice design cleverly incorporates the letters "HAKU SHA" as an artistic element that glows like a lantern. This project represents a pivotal moment for traditional Japanese inns, demonstrating how authentic cultural experiences can be reinterpreted through sophisticated architectural design to create a new standard of mindful luxury. Design Team – Founded in 2021 in Kagoshima, Japan, atelier SALAD is an emerging architectural practice led by the husband-and-wife team of Hiroko Kakoi and Kohei Tokunaga. The firm's name cleverly represents their philosophy: Social And Local Architecture Design, emphasizing their commitment to creating spaces that are as diverse, fresh, and vibrant as a salad. The studio's principals bring rich international experience to their practice. Hiroko Kakoi, a graduate of Kyushu University's Architecture Department, honed her skills at SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE before co-founding atelier SALAD. Kohei Tokunaga, also a Kyushu University alumnus with a master's degree in Human-Environment Studies, contributed his expertise through work at KMS Shanghai from 2015 to 2020. As a registered first-class architect (License No. 383345) and Junior Member of the Japan Institute of Architects, Tokunaga brings technical precision to the firm's creative vision. The practice has quickly gained recognition in Japan's architectural scene, earning multiple accolades including two prestigious Japan Space Design Awards 2024 for their work on Yakushi Onsen and Ibusuki Hakusuikan Hakusha-no-Ma, as well as the Nagoya Mosaic Tile Design Award 2023. Their design methodology extends beyond traditional architectural services, encompassing a holistic approach from conceptual planning through post-completion engagement. The firm's philosophy centers on creating deeply contextual architecture that establishes meaningful relationships with its surroundings while remaining socially and environmentally conscious. 2024 Previous Next

  • ID 住宅 Wahana Architects | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Nestled within a housing complex in Yakarta, Indonesia, the recently completed ID House by Wahana Architects masterfully blends indoor and outdoor living across its 500 square meters. Guiding the design is a central goal - to create shared spaces that encourage connection between family members. This ethos manifests through thoughtful spatial arrangements across the home's three floors, culminated by a large central void that bridges communal areas. Split across tri-level floors, the home features an open-plan first floor that dissolves boundaries between living spaces and the outdoor garden. The seamless flow between interior and exterior creates a tranquil environment in harmony with nature. Upstairs, the second floor houses private bedrooms alongside a family room and home office connected by the open void. This impressive architectural feat forges cohesion between the family room below and dining area above, promoting togetherness. Crowning the home, the third floor provides quiet personal retreats with the master bedroom and children's bedrooms. Dedicated to relaxation and solitude, these rooms allow privacy while the lower levels remain communal. From its tranquil integration of indoor/outdoor to impressive floating architectural details, the ID House is a testament to design that connects. Design Team - Believing architecture transcends forms to shape lives, Wahana Architects places people at the heart of their humanistic design process. Rather than forcing inhabitable spaces to conform to rigid plans, the studio adapts flowing forms to satisfy user needs. This psychology-driven approach stems from a conviction that buildings failing user needs fail their very purpose. Success lies not in visual appeal alone but in understanding personalities, fulfilling identities, and enabling connections. Such harmony between spaces and inhabitants enables true dwelling. From initial concepts to supervised construction, Wahana Architects' holistic process attunes buildings to those they serve. Through intimate client collaboration, they craft resonant spaces where people feel understood, at home with themselves and others. Such thoughtfulness breathed life into their award-winning INDE Shortlisted and ArchDaily nominated projects. 500 m² Yakarta, INDONESIA 2023 Previous Next

Situated in Singapore's emerging Jurong East commercial district, the hub houses ST Engineering's Smart City and Cyber businesses. Inspired by circuit board patterns, the facade subtly incorporates the company's logo into an architectural screen wrapping the podium. This visually striking base anchors the tower above, with curves softening the overall massing. Greenery abounds through a sky garden and cascading terraces which also passively reduce solar gain. The terraced levels create a dynamic profile with tiered spaces and wide views. Inside, a light-filled atrium forms the heart of the building. A key challenge was constructing the new annex while the existing building remained fully operational. Careful phasing and logistics maintained day-to-day functions unimpeded. From its sophisticated facade down to spatial planning, the design embodies an innovative spirit befitting ST Engineering's technology leadership. Seamlessly blending high-tech with natural elements, the Hub exemplifies a smart, sustainable and human-centric workplace. The 1,210-square-metre building serves as a testament to the seamless integration of modern architectural principles with traditional Finnish craftsmanship. The three-storey structure, commissioned by the Albert de la Chapelle Foundation, stands out for its sophisticated black spruce cladding that pays homage to the region's rich timber architectural heritage while asserting its contemporary identity. The building's distinctive form creates a contextual landmark that harmoniously weaves into the fabric of the 18th-century townscape. What sets Chappe Art House apart is its innovative approach to spatial organization. The building features lofty, hall-like spaces that serve dual purposes – housing museum-grade galleries while accommodating community events. The top level houses the main exhibition galleries, while the ground floor opens into a generous multi-purpose foyer that connects to a shared museum garden, linking it physically and programmatically to the existing Raseborg Museum complex. JKMM Architects, led by founding partner Asmo Jaaksi, has masterfully integrated art installations as architectural elements, collaborating with Finnish artists such as Karin Widnäs and Petri Vainio. The interior spaces showcase exposed timber structure on the upper levels, introducing warmth and tactility to the gallery environments while maintaining museum-grade environmental controls for art preservation. The building's thoughtful design extends to its relationship with its surroundings, featuring carefully framed views of the sea and old town. This attention to context, combined with its technical sophistication and commitment to accessibility, positions Chappe Art House as a significant cultural catalyst for the region, transforming a traditionally seasonal destination into a year-round cultural hub. The project exemplifies how contemporary cultural architecture can both honor local heritage and drive community vitality through innovative design solutions. Wrapped in a lattice-like timber veil, the house bridges public and private realms through strategic orientation and placement of openings. While permeable northern façade invites verdant views and breezes, insulated southern flank averts summertime heat gain. At the heart lies a soaring double-height interior courtyard sealed by translucent polycarbonate roofs that flood the space with dappled sunlight. Reminiscent of a Victorian conservatory, this flexible venue accommodates lounging, reading nooks and children’s play areas amidst enveloping greenery. Strategically placed solar shading and operable skylights allow occupants to modulate light and ventilation. Enveloping this atrium, a ring of insulated rooms provides respite during severe winters and thunderstorms while still enabling cross-ventilation. By concentrating disparate functions within interconnected microclimates, the project reconciles seasonal extremes with user comfort. Beyond environmental attunement, these interlocking realms enrich everyday rituals with plays of light and shadow. Though compact, the dwelling's ingenious "matryoshka" configuration awakens the senses with the charm of the outdoors. Project:House A Team:Akinori Hamada Architects Size:76.45㎡ Location: Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan Feature: Project - In Tokyo's densely packed Setagaya district, Aki Hamada Architects has crafted House A, a contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese folk houses that masterfully bridges private living spaces with public engagement. This two-story wooden dwelling reimagines the concept of "home" for a young family while establishing a unique dialogue with its urban context. The architect's innovative approach manifests in what they call "Home 2.0," where the conventional boundaries between private and public spaces are thoughtfully blurred through a series of architectural devices. Most notably, a large vertical "display of things" faces the street, functioning as a modern interpretation of traditional merchant house storefronts, allowing the family's accumulated memories and objects to become part of the streetscape. At the heart of the 76.45-square-meter home stands a commanding centerpiece: a 250-millimeter-diameter Yoshino cypress pillar that serves both structural and symbolic purposes. This main pillar, chosen with careful consideration of the clients' hometown locations in Ehime and Aichi prefectures, creates a poetic triangulation with the site. The house's spatial organization follows a traditional "ta-no-ji" floor plan on the ground level, while incorporating contemporary elements such as a flexible workspace and a unique "bath-living" arrangement on the upper floor. The exterior, reminiscent of a traditional storehouse yet distinctly modern, features a gabled roof and upward-opening eaves that create a subtle but engaging street presence. Through its thoughtful mix of traditional elements and modern living requirements, House A presents a compelling vision for contemporary urban living that honors Japanese architectural heritage while embracing present-day needs. Design Team - Founded in 2014, Aki Hamada Architects (AHA) has rapidly emerged as one of Japan's most innovative architectural practices, distinguished by its pioneering approach to integrating computational design with traditional Japanese spatial concepts. Led by Principal Architect Aki Hamada, who holds a Master's degree from the University of Tokyo, the firm operates from dual locations in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district and Toyama Prefecture, enabling a unique perspective that bridges urban and regional architectural contexts. The practice's philosophy, centered on what they term "Hyper naturalism Architecture," represents a sophisticated fusion of human-centric design, environmental consciousness, and technological innovation. This approach has garnered international recognition, notably through their award-winning Substrate Factory Ayase project, which received the prestigious DFA Design for Asia Awards Merit Award (2017) and the Iconic Award Best of Best (2019). The firm's current team of eleven professionals brings together a remarkably diverse international expertise, including architects from Lithuania, Argentina, Australia, and China, creating a dynamic cross-cultural design environment. This multicultural perspective, combined with the team's varied academic backgrounds from institutions such as the University of Tokyo, Melbourne University, and USC School of Architecture, enables AHA to approach each project with a unique global-local synthesis. Operating at the intersection of computational design and tectonic innovation, AHA's work is characterized by their three core principles: Adaptability, Elementality, and Individuality, establishing them as a leading voice in contemporary Japanese architecture. 2023 Previous Next

  • CASA DLCA住宅 0studio Arquitectura | Archicasting

2024 Previous Next

  • Le Vau 教育馆 L'Atelier Senzu | Archicasting

Feature: Project - The newly completed Le Vau Pavilion stands as a pioneering exemplar of sustainable architecture and community engagement. Crafted from rammed earth and wood within a school complex in Paris, the distinctive circular structure fosters connections on multiple fronts. Conceived in response to the need for more welcoming and egalitarian educational spaces, the innovative design accommodates varied arrangements while its all-encompassing facade rejects conventional hierarchies. Strategically situated between the street and school building, the pavilion bridges contexts in form and function. Its aesthetically striking round shape, accentuated by a slatted wooden exterior, creates an inviting arena for collective learning that contrasts with the orthogonal Lines of traditional institutions. The choice of rammed earth as the primary material, a first for a load-bearing building in Paris, brings structural integrity and appealing thermal properties in service of sustainability. As a convergence of diverse concerns - the imperative to decarbonize construction, the need for inclusive pedagogical environments, and the goal of building community ties - the Le Vau Pavilion stands as a resounding success. Its exemplary approach points the way forward for educational architecture and sustainable construction practices in urban settings. Design Team - L'Atelier Senzu upholds a workshop culture emphasizing teamwork and exchange of ideas, combining members’ expertise to create design schemes collectively. Our method is to hybridize perspectives and knowledge, blending ancient wisdom with novel technologies, preserving traditional essences while tackling challenges optimistically and responsibly. We constantly question how to build more sustainably, seeking innovative alternatives to energy-intensive materials. We believe this paradigm shift must be grounded in material experimentation. Therefore architects must collaborate closely with manufacturers. 100 m² Paris, FRANCE 2023 Previous Next

This 68,000-square-meter airport is an integral part of the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) masterplan, aimed at establishing a key aviation and business hub. The design team drew inspiration from Bhutan's natural environment and cultural traditions to create an impressive timber diagrid structure that resembles a stylized Himalayan mountain range from a distance. The structure's most striking feature is its innovative use of traditional Bhutanese woodcarving techniques, with each structural element meticulously carved and painted by local artisans, adorned with three types of dragons representing Bhutan's past, present, and future. The spatial design reflects a profound understanding of passenger experience, introducing a central courtyard called the "Forest Spine" that divides the terminal into domestic and international flight sections. This design brings Bhutan's rich biodiversity corridors directly into the airport interior, allowing travelers to maintain a connection with nature throughout their journey. A triple-height entry hall, floor-to-ceiling windows, and skylights bathe the entire space in natural light. What makes Gelephu International Airport unique is its successful integration of mindfulness principles with functional requirements. Indoor and outdoor lounges provide spaces for yoga, meditation, and relaxation, embodying Bhutan's emphasis on happiness and psychological well-being. Simultaneously, the airport employs climate-responsive passive designs, including wooden structures that absorb moisture from the air to regulate indoor humidity, ventilated roofs and courtyards that promote natural airflow, and extended eaves that provide shade and protection against heavy rainfall. This is not merely an airport but a showcase of Bhutanese cultural essence, perfectly blending tradition with innovation, history with future, offering international travelers a unique gateway to experience the spirit of Bhutan.

Project Name: Louis Vuitton Visionary Journeys Exhibition Location: Osaka, Japan Design Team: OMA / Shohei Shigematsu Exhibition Area: 2,200 m² Completion: 2025 Exhibition Period: July 15 - September 17, 2025 Feature: International architecture studio OMA / Shohei Shigematsu completed the Louis Vuitton Visionary Journeys Exhibition project at Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, creating a dramatic cultural retreat that ingeniously transforms museum space into an extraordinary brand storytelling experience. The project is positioned within the architecturally rich landscape of the museum's five-story atrium, drawing inspiration from Louis Vuitton's 170-year legacy to create an exhibition work that both celebrates traditional craftsmanship and embodies contemporary spatial innovation. The project's most compelling design feature lies in its sophisticated response to the museum's architectural constraints---the architects masterfully handled the spatial requirements by creating a series of telescoping narrative galleries that overlap and thrust through eleven thematic zones, generating dynamic exhibition gestures that evoke both journey and exploration forms. Rather than choosing traditional linear progression, the scenography embraces vertical potential, creating an experience that layers across multiple levels with dramatic installations concealing and revealing brand heritage, generating unique spatial encounters while maintaining seamless connection through sophisticated interior volume modulation. The exhibition's form strategically opens toward cultural dialogue and brand legacy, optimizing exposure to natural storytelling and maximizing panoramic understanding of Louis Vuitton's creative evolution. This thoughtful curation ensures that the exhibition maintains an intimate connection to Japanese culture while adhering to strict museum standards including sophisticated preservation techniques to protect historical artifacts. The exhibition facade showcases warm Monogram washi paper and hand-woven bamboo structures, providing superior cultural integration from a functional perspective while possessing refined aesthetic significance that harmonizes with traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Material selection demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to place and cultural context. The razor-thin display details, seamlessly integrated narrative elements, and culturally sourced materials create a tactile dialogue that maps the resilient qualities of the surrounding cultural environment. The complex mirrored dome system provides necessary visual impact while allowing for maximized exhibition spatial experience, modulating interior volumes from intimate artifact spaces to dramatic skylight culmination above the workshop demonstration area. The project culminates in the sophisticated spatial organization, which simultaneously serves multiple functions across eleven thematic galleries totaling over 2,200 square meters. The main sequence features monumental lantern installations, dramatic hemispherical trunk globe, and comprehensive brand heritage displays, while specialized zones provide Origins gallery with bamboo armature, Workshop with live craftspeople demonstrations, Materials archive with infinite display effects, and Collaborations space with kaleidoscopic mirrored presentations. This innovative design exemplifies how contemporary exhibition design can maximize cultural exchange while providing luxury brand storytelling experiences, creating a feeling that is both grounded in tradition and aspirational in vision. Design Team - OMA stands as a distinguished international architectural practice that has established an exceptional reputation in innovative contemporary design. Founded by Rem Koolhaas in 1975 and based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, under the creative direction of partner Shohei Shigematsu for Asian projects, the firm has developed a reputation for creating innovative solutions across elegant contemporary architecture, culture-oriented creative spaces, and large-scale avant-garde projects. Shohei Shigematsu brings exceptional architectural experience and deep understanding of contemporary spatial practices to the firm. As a partner at OMA, he specializes in Asian project development and has garnered recognition for his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship. This combination of global expertise with contemporary design innovation positions OMA uniquely within the international architectural landscape. The firm's design philosophy emphasizes that concept-driven solutions are as important as spatial execution, not rushing to standardized architectural solutions but believing that architecture should be a result of thorough understanding of cultural conditions, social contexts, and programmatic requirements. Through dialogue with clients, they formulate the main ingredients for the project then offer their expertise to transform ideas into reality. OMA believes that exceptional ideas come from collaboration with specialized consultants and artisans, they love to challenge themselves and push the design boundary further, with innovation being the key to keeping their business running. Through this thoughtful synthesis of local material usage, understanding of traditional spatial logic, and contemporary architectural language, OMA has established itself as a significant contributor to international contemporary architectural discourse, creating architectural works that are both rooted in local culture and embrace global design vision. Project Name: Clarks SHIBUYA Location: Tokyo, Japan Design Team: kooo architects Client: Clarks Japan Co., Ltd. Construction: Hakusuisha Project Area: 80㎡ Completion Date: November 1, 2024 Photography: Keishin Horikoshi Feature: Project - In a striking architectural intervention, Japanese architects Shinya and Ayaka Kojima of kooo architects have transformed a challenging retail space in Tokyo's bustling Shibuya district into a captivating flagship store for British footwear brand Clarks. The project's most distinctive feature is its response to an unusual urban constraint: the store faces directly onto a pedestrian bridge, presenting unique visibility challenges. Rather than seeing this as a limitation, the architects turned it into an opportunity for innovation, crafting an interior that ingeniously captures the attention of passersby from multiple angles. The centerpiece of the 80-square-meter space is a masterfully curved display wall that sweeps through the interior in a bold arc. This architectural element, constructed from wood panels sized to match shoe dimensions, creates a continuous surface that flows from the entrance to the cashier area. The curved wall serves dual purposes – it's both a functional display system and a unifying design element that brings cohesion to Clarks' diverse product range, from formal dress shoes to casual sneakers and seasonal footwear. Complementing this feature is a full-height mirror positioned on the opposite wall, creating an engaging visual dialogue between the curved display and its reflection. This thoughtful arrangement maximizes the impact of the existing large glass shopfront while creating an immersive retail environment that draws customers inside. The project exemplifies how architectural innovation can transform spatial challenges into design opportunities. The curved wall's sweeping gesture not only solves practical display requirements but also creates a distinctive brand environment that reflects Clarks' heritage while looking firmly to the future. Completed in November 2024, the store represents a sophisticated blend of Japanese spatial efficiency and British retail heritage, resulting in a space that's both functionally superior and aesthetically compelling. Design Team - Founded in 2015, kooo architects, led by principals Shinya and Ayaka Kojima, operates between Tokyo and Shanghai with a distinctive approach to contemporary architecture that challenges the homogenization of built environments. With a team of 25 professionals, the practice has established itself as a significant voice in contextual design across East Asia. The firm's philosophy centers on three core principles: sustainable longevity over temporary solutions, material authenticity over standardization, and continuous post-occupancy evolution. Their methodology emphasizes deep site-specific research, incorporating local craftsmanship and unprocessed materials to create spaces that resonate with regional identity. Working across diverse typologies including hospitality, sports facilities, commercial spaces, and residential projects, Shoudai Architectural Design Office provides comprehensive services from concept development through to construction administration. Their portfolio is distinguished by a careful attention to vernacular details and innovative material applications that challenge the uniformity of modern construction methods. The practice has garnered international recognition, including the IF Design Award 2025 Finalist position for Hotel Rakuragu and the Dezeen Awards 2024 winner for Sustainable Design. Through their subsidiary brand "Ichijo-Toma," they also explore Japanese living concepts through renovation services, further expanding their influence on contemporary architectural discourse. 2024 Previous Next

Located between the Jinzu River and Toyama Canal, this five-story structure exemplifies an innovative response to both urban industrial context and natural surroundings. The building's most distinctive feature is its sophisticated zoning strategy that enables fluid transitions between "solo" and "collaboration" modes, addressing the modern workplace's dual needs for focused work and interactive engagement. The design introduces a comprehensive balcony system that encircles the building, serving multiple functions: it creates a dynamic play of light and shadow on the façade, acts as an environmental buffer zone, and provides accessible outdoor spaces for employee wellness. In response to local environmental conditions, the building incorporates intelligent climate control strategies. The balconies serve as passive solar control devices, blocking summer sun while allowing winter solar gain. The structure's orientation maximizes views of both the Tateyama Mountain Range and the industrial complex, creating visual connections between nature and industry. The interior showcases a thoughtful application of local materials, particularly in the ceiling's domestic softwood louvers, which not only conceal mechanical systems but also create a warm, natural atmosphere. The ground floor's piloti design, incorporating medicinal plants and utilizing groundwater from the Northern Alps, reflects the company's pharmaceutical heritage while creating an inviting public space. Kengo Kuma and Associates | Archicasting

Project:Audeum (audio museum) Team:Kengo Kuma and Associates Size:11009 m² Location: Seoul, South Korea Feature: Project - Kengo Kuma's latest masterpiece, Audeum (audio museum), emerges as a groundbreaking sensory museum in Seoul's vibrant Gangnam district, redefining the conventional museum experience through an innovative fusion of sound, architecture, and natural elements. This 11,009-square-meter structure stands as a testament to the evolution of cultural spaces, transcending traditional visual exhibitions to create an immersive, multi-sensory journey. The building's most striking feature is its sophisticated exterior envelope, composed of vertically stacked aluminum louvers that create an ever-changing play of light and shadow. This dynamic façade system, reminiscent of dappled sunlight filtering through a forest canopy, transforms the building's appearance throughout the day and seasons. The seemingly random arrangement of aluminum pipes achieves a delicate balance between chaos and order, responding organically to urban and natural contexts. Interior spaces reveal a masterful transition from the metallic exterior to warm, tactile environments through Kuma's innovative "wood drape" technique. This distinctive architectural detail elevates traditional wood finishing methods, creating acoustically optimized spaces that enhance the museum's audio-focused exhibits while maintaining a profound connection to natural materials. What sets The Audeum apart is its holistic approach to sensory engagement. Moving beyond conventional audio exhibits, the space orchestrates a sophisticated interplay of sound, light, wind, and fragrance, creating an unprecedented museum typology. The architecture itself becomes an instrument, designed to attune visitors to their natural sensory capabilities while providing a sanctuary for acoustic exploration in the heart of Seoul's metropolitan landscape. In a world increasingly dominated by digital experiences, The Audeum emerges as a vital counterpoint – a space that celebrates the fundamentally analog nature of human perception, establishing itself as a pivotal cultural landmark for the contemporary era.

Project Name: Naraç Church Location: Naraç Village, Albania Design Team: ArkPro Total Floor Area: 704 m² Completion: 2023 Photography: Liridon Cani Feature: Project - ArkPro Architecture Studio has completed their notable project - Naraç Church in northern Albania, representing the country's first modern Catholic temple designed and built entirely by Albanian talent using local materials. This 704-square-meter structure masterfully combines flowing curved forms with concrete materiality to create a sacred space that is both religiously solemn and aesthetically contemporary. The design team drew inspiration from "the river that brings the stones, the air that brings the ideas, and the light that brings them to life" to meticulously craft this unique religious building. The project's most distinctive feature is its flowing curved form—a deliberate departure from traditional ecclesiastical architecture with sharp angles and classical elements—creating an inclusive space. The architect's choice of concrete as the primary material directly relates to the site's geographic context, positioned near a river that once flowed through the village. The interior spaces reveal the design team's masterful manipulation of light and spatial experience. Carefully positioned apertures direct natural illumination exclusively toward the altar, creating a focused spiritual experience. The most ingenious design element is the subtle sloping floor that gradually descends 30 centimeters as worshippers approach the altar, physically manifesting feelings of humility and reverence. The warm wooden roof, inspired by the pure form of a lemon leaf, contrasts beautifully with the concrete walls, introducing organic warmth to the monumental structure. The uniqueness of Naraç Church lies not only in its function as a religious space but in how it has become the new center of the village, creating a distinctive visual focal point for every resident. In a region where no new religious structures had been built during Albania's long transition period, this church stands as both architectural achievement and symbol of renewed cultural identity, bringing new hope and pride to the local community. Design Team - Located in Don Bosko, Tirana, ArkPro Architecture Studio has established itself as one of Albania's most innovative architectural practices. Led by principal architect Alfons Shtjefni, the studio embraces the philosophy that "every project is a research and unique," renowned for their deep analysis of site contexts and keen insight into material applications. Alfons Shtjefni graduated from Switzerland's prestigious Mendrisio Academy of Architecture, completing his education under the guidance of world-renowned architect Mario Botta and studying for over a year under 2009 Pritzker Prize laureate Peter Zumthor. Subsequently, he worked and collaborated with several architectural studios in Switzerland, emerging as a winner in numerous international competitions held within these studios. The practice specializes in a design approach that uniquely integrates urban planning, landscape, architecture, and design of specific building components, dedicated to setting new global standards through design methodologies. Shtjefni emphasizes that projects should be elements of transformation for their locations while becoming irreplaceable parts of these places. His design philosophy pursues close relationships with sites and future users, enhancing value through materials that constitute nature. The studio's methodology combines rigorous architectural analysis with keen insight into user experience, demonstrating exceptional ability to balance aesthetic quality with practical functionality in iconic projects like the Naraç Church. ArkPro's influence is manifested through their growing portfolio of high-quality projects, establishing new standards for contemporary architectural practice in Albania. 2023 Previous Next

Feature: Project - Set amidst a lush woodland on a vast, flat plot in western Japan, House Y by Hayato Komatsu Architects adopts an innovative radial plan that allows the dwelling to engage with its picturesque surroundings from multiple vantage points. The secluded site offers tranquil views of the Seto Inland Sea to the northwest and dramatic mountains capes to the southeast. Rather than situating the house in isolation amid this expansive landscape, the architects devised a branching layout inspired by the form of a tree. A central living pavilion anchors the plan, with private bedroom wings radiating outward like boughs. Wider sections along these wings create lounge areas that blur the boundaries between indoors and out. The further one moves from the main living space toward the bedrooms, the more intimate and compressed the spaces become through lowered ceilings. This subtle compression and release heightens the sense of journey. Floor-to-ceiling glazing along the radiating wings frames shifting perspectives of the natural scenery with each step. Exterior spaces are delicately subdivided into a series of gardens tailored to distinct views - one framing the sunset, another the sea, a courtyard catching morning light, and so on. Residents can wander this secluded paradise, discovering anew its varied charms with each season and time of day. Through its innovative branching form, House Y poetically intertwines architecture and landscape into a unified, constantly unfolding experience. Design Team - Founded in 2009 by Hayato Komatsu, the eponymous HAYATO KOMATSU ARCHITECTS has emerged as one of Japan's most innovative architectural practices. Based in Hiroshima, the firm takes a multidisciplinary approach, offering services in architecture, interior design, landscape, and product design. Under Komatsu's leadership as Principal Architect, along with Directors Ryoko Komatsu, Shinmei Chono, Shinro Ueki, Naoji Natsume, Suzumi Nishihara, and Shuguma Tanaka, the firm has gained worldwide recognition for its sleek, site-specific designs that poetically interweave the built and natural environments. Guided by a philosophy of finding the "gray" between architectural black and environmental white, their award-winning residential works skillfully negotiate boundaries while fostering comfortable living spaces imbued with a sense of openness and connection to context. HAYATO KOMATSU ARCHITECTS' refined yet warm modernism has earned publication in numerous prestigious journals. With their diverse, integrated approach and commitment to contextual sensitivity, this Hiroshima-based firm continues to produce architecture that elevates the human experience through its seamless blending of the manmade and organic worlds. Previous Next

2023 Previous Next

Feature:Project - Seamlessly blending traditional Chinese philosophy with contemporary architecture, the Tianfu Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine by MUDA-Architects is a remarkable ode to the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Situated in Chengdu, China, the striking circular form of the museum appears to emerge from the surrounding landscape, with its curved lines and fluid geometry echoing the ancient Taiji philosophy of yin and yang. The building's facade masterfully balances solidity and transparency, with perforated aluminum panels on the west side minimizing solar heat gain, while a double-curved glass curtain wall on the east seamlessly connects the interior spaces to the adjacent lake views. This innovative design approach not only reduces energy consumption but also blurs the boundaries between architecture and its natural surroundings. Inside, the museum's multi-level atrium creates a breathtaking, vertically-integrated space flooded with natural light. Winding ramps and platforms intertwine organically, inviting visitors on a dynamic exploratory journey through the exhibitions. MUDA-Architects has skillfully translated the core principles of traditional Chinese medicine – harmony, balance, and interconnectedness – into a captivating spatial experience that transcends mere architectural form. Through its ingenious synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern design sensibilities, the Tianfu Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine stands as a testament to China's rich cultural heritage while offering a fresh, sustainable approach to museum architecture. Design Team - Founded in 2015 with offices in Beijing, China and Boston, USA, and establishing a Chengdu office in 2017, MUDA-Architects boasts an internationally diverse team of creative designers from around the globe.
