Project:The Warren House Team:PLOTNONPLOT Architecture Inc. Size:2700 ft² Location:Ottawa, Canada Feature: Project - Nestled in the residential Westboro neighborhood of Ottawa, The Warren House by PLOTNONPLOT Architecture Inc. emerges as a paradigm-shifting dwelling that challenges conventional notions of family living. This 2,700 square foot home, completed in 2024, draws inspiration from the cozy confines of a rabbit's warren, offering a unique interpretation of domestic warmth and security. The architects have masterfully crafted a residence that playfully subverts expectations, creating a harmonious dialogue between privacy and openness. The home's most striking feature is its partially subterranean design, with main living spaces embedded into the ground. This innovative approach not only provides a sense of sanctuary but also allows the home's warmth to radiate upwards and outwards, creating a cocoon-like atmosphere for its inhabitants. Despite its modest footprint, The Warren House boasts a complex internal organization that defies traditional level arrangements. A large vertical space carved from the center of the home serves as its beating heart, facilitating a fluid interplay of light, sound, and familial interaction. This central void becomes a stage for the everyday joys of dining, conversation, music, and play, offering various spatial configurations to suit the family's evolving needs. The architects' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the thoughtful circulation paths, strategically placed terraces, and divergent openings that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. Vegetated roofs further integrate the structure with its environment, while clever nooks and crannies offer opportunities for solitude and reflection. PLOTNONPLOT's material palette strikes a delicate balance between timeless elegance and playful whimsy. Wood, glass, linen, and concrete form a sophisticated backdrop, while carefully chosen tiles, wallpapers, and textiles inject personality and charm. The exterior, clad in black steel and wood, acts as a protective shell, selectively revealing and concealing the vibrant life within. The Warren House stands as a testament to the power of innovative residential design, offering a fresh perspective on urban family living that is both grounded and uplifting. Design Team - Founded in 2013, PLOTNONPLOT Architecture Inc. has rapidly established itself as a dynamic force in Ottawa's architectural landscape. This avant-garde practice, helmed by co-founders Rebecca Fernando and Grant Oikawa, is redefining the boundaries of contemporary design through a steadfast commitment to human-centric architecture. At the core of PLOTNONPLOT's ethos lies a profound appreciation for the human scale. The firm's multidisciplinary approach encompasses a diverse portfolio, ranging from residential and commercial projects to bespoke furniture design and artistic installations. This versatility allows the team to craft spaces that resonate deeply with individual users, ensuring that each project becomes a unique reflection of its inhabitants' personalities and needs. PLOTNONPLOT's design philosophy is grounded in three key principles: sustainability as an opportunity rather than a constraint, creativity as an all-encompassing force, and the narrative procession through space as a means to enhance experiential quality. The firm's rigorous methodology combines traditional drawing techniques with cutting-edge digital tools, fostering a design process that is both exploratory and meticulous. The leadership trio of PLOTNONPLOT brings a wealth of expertise to every project. Rebecca Fernando, known for her prowess in traditional drawing and conceptual development, spearheads the firm's creative direction. Grant Oikawa contributes over two decades of architectural experience, with a particular focus on custom fabrication and detailing. Tim Derkatch, the firm's Architectural Technologist, ensures the seamless translation of creative visions into technically sound solutions. As PLOTNONPLOT continues to shape Ottawa's built environment, their commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability, and user-centric design positions them at the forefront of architectural innovation in Eastern Ontario. With each project, they strive to exceed client expectations while fulfilling their own artistic and professional aspirations, creating spaces that are not just built, but thoughtfully crafted.
Valode & Pistre | Archicasting
Project Name: Mareterra Monaco Complex Location: Monaco Design Team: Valode & Pistre Total Floor Area: 60000 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Philippe Chancel, Hufton+Crow, Loïc Thébaud Feature: Project - Valode & Pistre has completed their landmark project - Mareterra Complex in Monaco, reinterpreting the concept of land reclamation through innovative architectural approaches. This 6-hectare development serves both as a residential district and a thoughtfully crafted urban extension that appears completely natural despite its artificial origins. The project's most distinctive feature is its technical achievement: 18 reinforced concrete caissons, each 30 meters high and weighing 10,000 tons, form a protective barrier that follows the natural -30 meter isobath. This engineering solution maintains critical water circulation patterns while creating a stable foundation in a seismically active region, demonstrating how infrastructure can respect natural systems. The spatial layout is carefully orchestrated, centered around an artificial hill densely planted with mature stone pines that creates a visual anchor and natural transition. The design creates a harmonious flow through tiered programming: waterfront villas reminiscent of traditional Riviera settlements, apartment buildings rising in tiers to maximize sea views, and a southern marina section activated by restaurants and retail spaces. The project's uniqueness lies in its pedestrian-focused approach, transforming what could have been an exclusive enclave into a genuine urban district. Through extensive public spaces including a waterfront promenade, central plaza, and lush parkland, the designers have created a space that seamlessly integrates with Monaco's existing urban fabric. The crown jewel is Renzo Piano's apartment building standing on piles above the water, creating a dramatic dialogue between architecture and sea that embodies the project's commitment to innovation and harmony. Design Team - Founded in 1980 by Denis Valode and Jean Pistre, Valode & Pistre has evolved into a leading international architecture firm known for its comprehensive approach to design. Based in Paris with a subsidiary in Beijing, the practice is now led by the founding partners alongside seven associates, executing projects across France and globally throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Central America. The firm employs a holistic methodology that integrates multiple disciplines under one roof: architecture, urban planning, interior design, BIM management (VP BIM), construction oversight (VPX), façade engineering (VP&Green), and environmental consultancy (Espace Temps). This integrated structure allows Valode & Pistre to maintain exceptional quality control across diverse typologies. Their design philosophy emphasizes that "each project is enriched by its setting and places people at the heart of architectural design." The team is committed to transferring innovations between sectors while prioritizing quality of life considerations, approaching each project with fresh perspective while drawing on deep expertise. The firm's founders have received numerous accolades. Denis Valode received his Architect's Diploma from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in 1969, was awarded the Académie d'Architecture Silver Medal in 1988, and the Gold Medal in 1999 jointly with Jean Pistre. Jean Pistre received his architectural diploma in 1974, shares many of the same honors, and in 2011 was appointed President of the Urban Council of the Skolkovo Foundation, overseeing a major international science center project near Moscow. Throughout their four-decade practice, Valode & Pistre has consistently viewed international experience as an opportunity to master cutting-edge design tools and the highest environmental quality standards, cementing their reputation as thoughtful creators of contextually responsive architecture that enhances the human experience.
Koto | Archicasting
Project Name: Koto Niwa Cabin Location: Boston, United States Design Team: Koto Total Floor Area: 375 ft² Completion: 2025 Photography: Edvinas Bruzas, Joanna Kossak, Simon Bevan, Olco Studios Feature: Project - In a thoughtful evolution of modular design, architecture studio Koto has unveiled the Niwa cabin collection – a sophisticated flatpack system that marries Scandinavian minimalism with Japanese-inspired tranquility. The compact 375-square-foot structures represent a significant advancement in prefabricated architecture, specifically engineered to bring design excellence to previously inaccessible locations. The pioneering Boston installation demonstrates the concept's core innovation: complete cabin components delivered via standard shipping container and assembled on-site with minimal environmental disruption. Perched elegantly on a woodland slope, the cabin establishes what the designers call "an intimate dialogue between architecture and nature" – a hallmark of Koto's design philosophy. Materiality plays a crucial role in the Niwa experience, with FSC-certified timber and thermally modified cladding selected not merely for sustainability credentials but for their ability to weather gracefully over time. The generous glazed elements dissolve conventional boundaries between interior and exterior, creating light-filled sanctuaries that frame their natural surroundings. What distinguishes Niwa from conventional prefabricated solutions is its remarkable versatility. The system's lightweight, precision-engineered components eliminate the need for heavy machinery during installation, making it particularly valuable for ecologically sensitive sites or urban infill projects where traditional construction proves problematic. Koto's design team, led by Johnathon Little with senior architect Emma Hugh and interior designer Kirstie Little, has created a flexible system adaptable to diverse functions – from creative studios to guest accommodations or wellness retreats. Each cabin can operate independently or connect with others in multiple configurations, while carefully curated interior finishes ensure each structure maintains Koto's signature aesthetic cohesion. The Niwa collection emerges as a significant contribution to contemporary architectural practice – a system that democratizes access to thoughtful design while reducing construction complexity and environmental impact, proving that architectural excellence need not be compromised by logistical constraints. Design Team - The Koto studio co-founded by Zoe, Johnathon and Theo design modular houses, cabins and sculptural small buildings, with each one drawing inspiration from Scandinavian design and culture. Co-founders, Johnathon and Zoë Little, returned from living on the shores of Norway's fjords with a deep appreciation of the local aesthetic and environment. As the brand progressed, Koto began looking further east to the minimalist world of Japanese design and their focus on social functionality. This is something that has always fascinated co-founder and architect Theo Dales. Koto share their emphasis on clean and simple details that provide a sense of calm. This exploration has helped Koto's designs evolve into the carefully-considered works they are today. As experienced specialists in architecture and interior design, Koto creates unique spaces that exude a sense of calm where users can relax and be inspired, while feeling connected to the great outdoors. Our on and off-grid carbon-neutral cabins are now available in the UK, Europe, and the USA. Whether you're looking to buy off-the-shelf designs or commission a bespoke project, our cabins are suitable for any site and budget.

Selgascano + Diego Cano | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Nestled in the hills of Los Angeles' Mount Washington neighborhood, the La Canaria House by Selgascano and Diego Cano offers a remarkable response to the city's iconic sunset views and unrelenting sunshine. This residential gem seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living, embracing the region's temperate climate with a ingenious design approach. The standout feature of the project is its striking golden aluminum mesh envelope, which envelops both the interior spaces and the expansive outdoor terrace. Acting as a visually arresting sunshade, this intricate lattice not only filters the intense California rays but also frames the breathtaking 180-degree panoramas that stretch from downtown LA to the Hollywood hills. Selgascano and Cano's design celebrates the fluidity between interior and exterior realms, creating a harmonious dialogue between the built environment and nature. The envelope's open structure invites verdant growth, with plans for various creepers, bushes, and ten different palm tree varieties to eventually colonize the vibrant canary-yellow cage, blurring the boundaries between architecture and landscape. Driven by a desire for affordability without compromising craftsmanship, the architects meticulously prefabricated and shipped the house's components, enabling efficient on-site assembly. This approach yielded a bespoke, handcrafted quality while maintaining costeffectiveness – a remarkable achievement in a city renowned for its high construction expenses. Design Team - Founded in Madrid in 1998 by José Selgas and Lucía Cano, SelgasCano has emerged as a pioneering architectural practice renowned for its innovative approach to materiality, color, and the harmonious integration of the built environment with nature. Led by the visionary duo, this Spanish atelier has garnered global acclaim for its creative exploration of unconventional materials and the seamless dialogue it fosters between architecture and its surrounding landscapes. SelgasCano's portfolio showcases a diverse array of remarkable projects, including auditoriums, congress centers, office buildings, and pavilions, each a testament to the firm's commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventional architectural norms. Their designs are characterized by a bold use of polychromy, translucent facades crafted from cutting-edge materials like ETFE and polycarbonate, and a profound respect for the existing natural context. With numerous accolades, including the Kunstpreis by the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and the Architects of the Year prize by the German Design Council, SelgasCano has solidified its position as a vanguard in the realm of contemporary architecture, continuously redefining the relationship between the built and natural environments.

Møller Architects Collaborators: Burckhardt Architektur AG Landscape Design: Uniola AG Engineering: PZM AG (MEP) Contractor: Allrea Project Area: 27,000㎡ Completion: 2024 Photography: Mark Hadden, Peter Sikker Rasmussen Sustainability Certification: LEED Platinum, Swiss Minergie Certification Feature: Project - Danish architecture studio C.F. Møller has transformed a 1970s office building on the shores of Lake Zürich into a contemporary workplace that seamlessly integrates sustainable technology with social spaces, earning prestigious LEED Platinum certification. The renovation of Bellerivestrasse 36 maintains the building's architectural heritage while introducing innovative solutions for energy efficiency. Most notably, the architects developed a distinctive facade system that incorporates horizontal photovoltaic panels, which serve the dual purpose of generating clean energy and providing solar shading. These panels are cleverly concealed behind color-treated glass that matches the metal cladding, creating a cohesive aesthetic that modernizes the building's appearance. At the heart of the 27,000-square-metre structure, a new atrium forms the social core of the building, fostering interaction between different departments and flooding the interior with natural light. This intervention transforms what was once a closed-off office environment into a dynamic, collaborative workspace that prioritizes user well-being. The project's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its energy-efficient systems. The architects have reimagined the existing stone terraces as green spaces that integrate seamlessly with the surrounding park. These areas not only provide pleasant outdoor spaces for employees but also contribute to rainwater management and local biodiversity. Interior spaces feature natural materials, with wood prominently used in lift cores and flooring, creating warm and inviting environments that contrast with the building's technical exterior. This materiality, combined with the abundance of natural light and views of Lake Zürich, establishes a strong connection between the indoor and outdoor environments. The renovation demonstrates how thoughtful architectural intervention can breathe new life into aging buildings while meeting contemporary environmental standards, setting a precedent for sustainable office renovations in Switzerland and beyond. Design Team - Founded in 1924 by C.F. Møller in Copenhagen, C.F. Project Name: % Arabica Shanghai EXPO World Location: Shanghai, China Design Team: Nguyen Khai Architects & Associates Project Area: 179㎡ Completion Year: 2025 Lead Architect: Nguyen Quang Khai Photography: Runzi Zhu Feature: Project - % Arabica's latest Shanghai outpost redefines the urban coffee experience through an ethereal architectural intervention that masterfully balances intimacy with openness. Situated in the bustling EXPO World district, this 179-square-metre space by Nguyen Khai Architects & Associates transforms the conventional coffee shop typology into a contemplative sanctuary through its distinctive tunnel-like design. The defining feature is an intricate system of white-painted mesh strips that vary in size and configuration, creating a pavilion-inspired passage that envelops visitors in a cocoon-like environment. This architectural gesture serves both aesthetic and functional purposes – the semi-transparent mesh mediates between indoor and outdoor spaces while providing essential privacy without compromising the sense of connection to the surrounding urban context. The interior follows a rigorously symmetrical composition organized into three distinct layers: furniture, the mesh tunnel structure, and integrated greenery. Two opposing entrances naturally divide the space into service and seating zones, with a curved waiting bench acting as an elegant transitional element. The designers have paid particular attention to lighting, with the counter area dramatically spotlit while the seating area is illuminated by custom Chemex-inspired pendant lamps that reference the art of coffee-making. The exterior design demonstrates equal consideration, with the white tunnel structure creating dynamic visual effects as visitors move around the space. Carefully positioned outdoor seating maintains the brand's signature aesthetic while complementing rather than competing with the architectural intervention. The innovative use of checkered planters between seating groups not only introduces natural elements but also creates subtle spatial demarcations that ensure privacy without isolation. This thoughtful balance between architectural ambition and functional requirements has resulted in a space that serves both as a striking urban landmark and an intimate retreat, embodying % Arabica's commitment to sophisticated design while creating a new paradigm for coffee shop architecture in Shanghai's competitive hospitality landscape. Design Team - Founded in 2016 in the historic city of Hue, Vietnam, Nguyen Khai Architects & Associates (NKAA) has established itself as a notable presence in contemporary Southeast Asian architecture. Under the leadership of principal architect Nguyen Quang Khai, the practice has developed a distinctive design philosophy that seamlessly integrates modernist principles with contextual sensitivity. Occupying a sharply triangular site adjacent to the main artery from Bang Saen, the cafe presents a stunning backdrop of majestic mountains. The designers at Unknown Surface Studio have masterfully exploited the site's geometry, extending the building along the roadside in three core zones - a welcoming entrance merging bar and seating areas, an outdoor lounge encapsulated within a lush courtyard, and a serene internal space for dining and work. Inspired by the ethereal allure of the Aurora Borealis, the design reinterprets these celestial light displays through an abstract lens. The building's sinuous form echoes the dynamism of the northern lights, with its arching structure gracefully hugging the roadway, melding effortlessly into its surroundings. Sweeping, uninterrupted lines interconnect all interior and exterior spaces, fostering a cohesive architectural narrative. Addressing challenges posed by its roadside location, the design ingeniously mitigates noise and thermal intrusion. The street-facing facade features towering, curved barriers that open strategically at select angles, maximizing mountain vistas while minimizing noise and heat transmission. Beyond acoustic comfort, this innovative system maintains a cooler indoor climate. The courtyard's strategic positioning channels unobstructed daylight and sky views into the interior, bathing the spaces in natural illumination throughout the day.

Project Name: BLOK House Location: Quebec City, Canada Design Team: Quinzhee Architecture Total Floor Area: 59 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Adrien Williams Feature: Project - Quinzhee Architecture has created BLOK House at the top of Mount Le Maelstrom in Lac-Beauport, Quebec, as an ideal retreat tailored specifically for climbing enthusiasts. This 59-square-meter structure, located at the summit of a natural climbing wall, provides the perfect refuge for climbers. The design team has crafted a monolithic volume with angular edges through asymmetrical forms and gray stucco materiality, cleverly evoking the form of a climbing block. Irregularly arranged openings on the façade resemble climbing holds, creating a surface that guides the gaze and ascent like a climbing route. Within this square plan, heated indoor spaces coexist with sheltered outdoor areas, both increasing the living space and providing an immersive experience in nature. Entering through the truncated corner of the volume, visitors first discover the protected outdoor spaces, sheltered from harsh weather and prying eyes. On the ground level, climbing walls allow climbers to practice their sport, while a spa invites relaxation between training sessions. The upper-level terrace provides a convivial space for cooking and sharing meals while contemplating the surrounding natural landscape. The heated spaces of BLOK House also extend across multiple levels. At ground level, bedrooms enjoy the calm and intimacy of the surrounding forest. The upper-level living spaces benefit from abundant light and unobstructed landscape views. A spacious mezzanine above the kitchen accommodates additional guests. All spaces are clad in wood, creating a harmonious visual continuity between interior and exterior living areas, while contrasting with the raw, mineral character of the building's envelope. BLOK House is not merely a shelter but a celebration of climbing culture expressed through architectural form. This building functions simultaneously as destination, refuge, and sculptural intervention in the landscape, demonstrating Quinzhee Architecture's ability to perfectly blend functional requirements with poetic design inspiration. Design Team - Founded in 2013 by architect Guillaume Fafard, Quinzhee Architecture is a firm embodying the characteristics of its namesake snow shelter: playful, ecological, and Nordic in style. Currently led by Fafard alongside senior architect Catherine Parent, the practice has developed a distinctive design approach that seamlessly integrates client participation into the design process. The firm's methodology places communication and idea-sharing at the forefront, considering these elements essential foundations for innovative, high-quality architectural solutions. By engaging all stakeholders in deliberations about building occupation and environmental context, the practice effectively evaluates the full spectrum of possibilities before identifying optimal design strategies. Quinzhee's portfolio demonstrates remarkable versatility, spanning multiple scales from residential and commercial architecture to urban planning, furniture design, and even ski fabrication. This deliberate cross-disciplinary approach fuels their creative vision and distinguishes their practice within the architectural landscape. With multiple team members holding Passive House Designer certifications, demonstrating the firm's commitment to sustainability, Quinzhee approaches each commission with environmental consciousness and technical precision. The practice values creative experimentation while maintaining pragmatic solutions that respond to client objectives. Though headquartered in Limoilou, Quebec, Quinzhee's operational reach extends well beyond the metropolitan area, embracing projects across diverse contexts. Their only prerequisite for taking on new challenges remains consistent: the opportunity to conceptualize projects through an alternative lens that challenges conventional architectural thinking.

Prioritizing sustainability, the NIO House is LEED Gold and WELL Platinum certified, operating as a self-sufficient, carbon-neutral facility powered by rooftop solar arrays. It reduces its carbon footprint through extensive use of stainless steel rather than aluminum. The interiors apply biophilic design with lush greenery and natural materials like cork wall cladding. The interior experience draws inspiration from NIO's vehicle cabins, combining warm wood, crisp lines, and terrazzo finishes to cultivate an environment that is intricate yet pure. Visitors can engage with NIO's products and brand ethos through vehicle displays, test drives, shopping and dining amenities, while also glimpsing the company's sophisticated manufacturing capabilities. Founded in 1986 in Aarhus, Denmark, Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects is a leading architectural practice providing professional design services globally from offices in Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Shanghai.

Project Name: Portlantis Visitor and Exhibition Center Location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands Design Team: MVRDV Total Floor Area: 3533 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Ossip van Duivenbode Feature: Project - The Portlantis Visitor and Exhibition Center, designed by MVRDV and located at the westernmost point of the Port of Rotterdam, opened to the public on March 22nd, 2025. This "museum with no collection" was created to showcase the intimate relationship between Rotterdam and its port. The building takes the form of a stack of five rotated exhibition spaces, each strategically oriented to frame specific views of the surroundings through carefully positioned "windows to the world" that offer panoramic vistas of the North Sea, coastline, and port facilities. At the heart of the building is a 22-meter-tall atrium featuring suspended yellow sculptures and a kinetic installation that symbolizes the perpetual motion of port activities. The exhibition areas, designed by Kossmanndejong, unfold across the floors – beginning with Rotterdam's current port operations on the first level, exploring its historical significance on the second, focusing on future developments and global role on the third, and addressing environmental challenges and sustainable solutions on the fourth. Each level's exhibition content directly corresponds to the view framed by its window. The building's exterior is characterized by bright red staircases that twist their way up the structure, providing free public access to viewing platforms on each level and the rooftop. This design element transforms Portlantis into not just an exhibition center but also a public viewing tower, creating a beacon-like presence in the landscape. Sustainability anchors the project through demountable structures, circular economy principles, and energy-positive operations, generating 30 percent more energy than it consumes. Constructed from resilient, port-sourced materials designed to withstand maritime conditions, the building embodies both the industrial spirit of Rotterdam and the port's ambitious transition toward a sustainable future. Design Team - MVRDV was founded in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. Project:Buitenplaats Koningsweg Team:MVRDV Size:4932 m² Location:Arnhem, Netherlands Feature: Project - In a striking transformation of history and nature, MVRDV, Buro Harro, and KondorWessels Projecten have breathed new life into a former World War II German military base on the outskirts of Arnhem, Netherlands. The Buitenplaats Koningsweg project seamlessly blends residential spaces, cultural elements, and the lush Veluwe forest, creating a unique living environment that honors its complex past while embracing a sustainable future. The masterplan ingeniously preserves and repurposes existing structures, with new additions clearly delineated through thoughtful material choices. Original brick buildings are carefully restored, while reconstructed elements feature distinctive light grey finishes. This approach not only respects the site's heritage but also allows visitors to intuitively interpret its layered history. MVRDV's contribution includes three almost-identical residential buildings, offering 21 energy-neutral "townhouses in the forest." These homes, raised above ground level, boast minimal enclosures and intimate connections to the surrounding nature. The project's commitment to sustainability is evident in its use of timber frames, recycled materials, and future-ready design elements. Perhaps most striking is the landscape design by Buro Harro, which "pulls the Veluwe landscape over the site like a blanket." This rewilding approach blurs the boundaries between built and natural environments, creating a serene atmosphere that feels both timeless and perfectly integrated with its surroundings. The result is a truly unique development that offers residents the rare opportunity to live, work, and relax in harmony with one of the Netherlands' most precious natural landscapes. Design Team - Founded in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries, MVRDV has established itself as a vanguard in innovative architectural design and urban planning. Now led by the founding partners alongside Frans de Witte, Fokke Moerel, Wenchian Shi, Jan Knikker, and Bertrand Schippan, this Rotterdam-based firm has expanded globally with offices in Shanghai, Paris, Berlin, and New York. MVRDV's approach is characterized by rigorous research, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to sustainability. Their in-house Climate Team ensures eco-conscious designs, while MVRDV NEXT pushes the boundaries of computational design and technology integration. The firm's portfolio spans an impressive range of typologies, from mixed-use developments like the iconic Markthal in Rotterdam to culturally significant projects such as the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen. MVRDV's work often challenges conventional architectural norms, as seen in projects like the Pyramid of Tirana transformation and the Tianjin Binhai Library. With a team of over 300 professionals, MVRDV continues to shape the future of architecture and urbanism. Their design philosophy, which emphasizes creativity, functionality, and social responsibility, has garnered international acclaim and numerous awards. Through their associated think tank, The Why Factory, MVRDV also contributes to academic discourse, envisioning future cities and pushing the boundaries of architectural thought.

Project Name: Fuku Auberge Location: Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, Japan Design Team: Kengo Kuma & Associates Total Floor Area: 198.95 m² Completion: March 2025 Photography: Keishin Horikoshi/SS Feature: Kengo Kuma & Associates has unveiled the remarkable Fuku Auberge in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, a transformative project that challenges traditional minka renovation typology through innovative restoration approaches. Located in the heart of Hizen-Hamashuku, a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, this restaurant and accommodation complex for sake brewery Fukuchiyo represents a bold reimagining of historic architecture regeneration. The building's most distinctive feature lies in its ingenious integration of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design concepts, seamlessly transforming the century-old minka into a contemporary space that embodies the spirit of "Nabeshima" sake. This design strategy directly responds to the site's inherent historical context—through a unified design language that simultaneously respects traditional architectural heritage and meets modern functional requirements, challenging conventional ryokan architectural conventions. Under the leadership of architect Kengo Kuma, this project exemplifies the firm's commitment to reinterpreting Japanese traditional architectural typology, a typology that carries profound cultural significance and craft traditions. The auberge transcends the limitations of typical accommodation architecture, integrating dining and lodging functions within a unified programmatic framework, creating spaces that serve client needs while promoting cultural experiences. The interior design creates ethereal visual effects through lighting fixtures crafted using traditional kumiko techniques, these luminaires appear to float randomly throughout each floor, both echoing traditional craftsmanship and embodying contemporary spatial aesthetics—elements that are core to both Nabeshima brand identity and Japanese cultural heritage. This design approach reinforces the building's role as a bridge connecting past and present, tradition and modernity. The completed 198.95-square-meter auberge marks a pivotal moment in traditional architecture regeneration, while establishing new benchmarks for Japanese historic building preservation and adaptive reuse. The project demonstrates how design can create bold forward-thinking environments while respecting historical context, inspiring the fusion of cultural heritage and innovation. This architectural achievement positions Fuku Auberge as a catalyst for future cultural tourism development, proving that historic buildings can be both functionally sophisticated and aesthetically captivating. Design Team - Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKAA) stands as a distinguished international architectural practice founded by Kengo Kuma in 1990, based in Tokyo, under the creative direction of the founder, the firm has developed a reputation for pioneering multidisciplinary practice that transcends conventional architectural boundaries. The practice operates on the foundation of "relationships between nature, technology, and human beings," applying rigorous spatial logic within the traditional boundaries of architecture and urbanism. Currently led by Kengo Kuma—born in 1954, University Professor and Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo and member of the Japan Art Academy—Kengo Kuma & Associates maintains active projects in over 50 countries worldwide. Under the leadership of the founding partner, the practice has cultivated a distinctive design methodology that seamlessly integrates conceptual rigor with spatial innovation. Their portfolio encompasses numerous landmark projects, including various cultural institutions, hospitality projects, and residential developments among internationally acclaimed architectural works. The firm's experimental approach to architectural design has been exemplified through numerous award-winning projects that have received prestigious international architectural awards. The firm's design philosophy emphasizes that materiality, environmental integration, and cultural sensitivity are equally important, not rushing to standardized architectural solutions but believing that architecture should be a result of thorough understanding of spatial conditions, cultural contexts, and programmatic requirements. Through in-depth dialogue with clients, they formulate the core elements of the project then offer their expertise to transform creative concepts into architectural reality. Kengo Kuma & Associates believes that exceptional design comes from collaboration with specialized consultants and craftsmen, they love to challenge themselves and push the design boundary further, with innovation being the key to maintaining their practice vitality. Through this thoughtful synthesis of contemporary architectural language, understanding of traditional spatial logic, and avant-garde design approaches, Kengo Kuma & Associates has established itself as a significant contributor to international contemporary architectural discourse, creating architectural works that are both rooted in local culture and embrace global design vision. Their work has been recognized with numerous international awards, demonstrating their ability to transform bold conceptual ideas into tangible architectural achievements.
