2025 Previous Next
Orange Architects | Archicasting
Project Name: Beaufort Residential Tower Location: Zeist, The Netherlands Design Team: Orange Architects Lead Architects: Jeroen Schipper, Julija Osipenko, Rik Meijer Project Area: 4,400 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: Sebastian van Damme Collaborators: Urban Planning: wUrck Client: Slokker Vastgoed BV, NCB-Projectrealisatie Construction: Slokker Bouwgroep Feature: Project - Orange Architects has completed Beaufort, a sculptural residential tower in Zeist, Netherlands, that appears to twist as it rises through the forest canopy. The 10-story building features a striking composition of stacked volumes that rotate 90 degrees on each floor, creating a dynamic interplay of protruding balconies and recessed outdoor spaces. Located on the edge of Kerckebosch neighborhood, the tower houses 19 luxury apartments and serves as a landmark gateway to the area. The design draws direct inspiration from its woodland setting, incorporating three natural elements – sand, tree trunk, and leaf – as primary themes that manifest in both form and materiality. The building's most distinctive feature is its orchestrated arrangement of L-shaped apartments, which are mirrored on each floor and rotate relative to the level below. This geometric play results in a series of generous "outdoor rooms" that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, allowing residents to feel immersed in the surrounding forest landscape. Sustainability and biophilic design principles are woven throughout the project. The facade combines sustainable Fraké wood cladding with demountable GRC panels, while a geothermal heat pump system and rooftop solar panels help the building achieve NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards. The semi-underground parking garage is ingeniously concealed beneath a landscape of local vegetation, with features like turf bio-blocks and tree trunk retaining walls seamlessly integrating the structure into its natural context. The tower's rational structural grid belies its sculptural appearance, with a central core and perimeter columns supporting the rotating floor plates. Panoramic windows and threshold-free spaces ensure accessibility and maximize views of the forest setting, creating what Orange Architects describes as a collection of "forest villas" that stack vertically into the sky. Design Team - Founded in 2010 in Rotterdam, Orange Architects has established itself as a leading force in contemporary architecture, consistently delivering innovative solutions to complex spatial challenges. Under the leadership of Patrick Meijers and Jeroen Schipper, the practice has cultivated a distinctive approach that merges conceptual rigor with contextual sensitivity. The firm's portfolio spans multiple scales and typologies, from urban planning to bespoke interiors, with a particular emphasis on sustainable design principles encapsulated in their "World | We | Value" framework. The 4,400-square-meter development demonstrates their mastery of computational design and sustainable innovation, featuring a sophisticated rotating floor plate system that creates a dynamic architectural form while maximizing views and natural light. Operating from their headquarters in Rotterdam's city center, Orange Architects has grown to a team of 11-50 professionals, fostering a collaborative environment that combines international expertise with local knowledge. Their work is characterized by a rigorous attention to tectonics, materiality, and social impact, consistently pushing the boundaries of architectural innovation while remaining grounded in practical solutions and user-centered design principles. 2024 Previous Next

- o tokyo ooc | Archicasting
2025 Previous Next

Situated on a narrow lot with neighboring houses just 400 to 800 millimeters apart, the project ingeniously addresses spatial constraints through an innovative central courtyard design. The design's core objective was to create a dynamic living environment that connects landscape and interior spaces. The central courtyard serves not only as the architectural and functional centerpiece but also enhances the residence with improved natural lighting and ventilation, bringing freshness and tranquility. The architects skillfully utilized the site's topography, allowing interior spaces to cascade with the hill's natural contours, creating surprising spatial depths and height variations behind the original cottage. Material selection reflects a subtropical design aesthetic, employing hardwood, concrete, and bluestone to evoke a laid-back interior style reminiscent of Sri Lankan and Singaporean design. Adaptable façade design ensures thermal responsiveness, capturing cooling breezes during summer and creating warm, intimate spaces in cooler months. The project preserves the historical characteristics of the original Queenslander cottage while injecting new vitality and functionality through contemporary additions. Each space is meticulously designed, ranging from private retreat areas to open public zones, demonstrating a harmonious coexistence between architecture and environment. Design Team - Founded in 2011, Alexandra Buchanan Architecture (ABA) represents a sophisticated architectural practice distinguished by its nuanced approach to design across residential, commercial, and adaptive reuse typologies. Established by Architect Alexandra Buchanan in Melbourne, the practice has strategically expanded to incorporate studios in Brisbane and Melbourne, demonstrating a comprehensive national design perspective. 2024 Previous Next
RAD+ar | Archicasting
Project Name: Chicken Hero Pavilion Design Team: RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + Architecture) Location: Jakarta, Indonesia Project Area: 900 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: Mario Wibowo Feature: Project - Nestled within Jakarta's Urban Forest, the Chicken Hero Pavilion by RAD+ar emerges as a radical reimagining of sustainable design and community engagement. Seamlessly blending into the landscape like an organic hill, this innovative structure transcends traditional architectural boundaries, transforming a simple chicken coop into a provocative platform for social and environmental transformation. Designed as a prototype for decentralized sustainability, the pavilion tackles Indonesia's critical food waste challenge through an ingenious circular economy approach. The project addresses the country's alarming statistic of approximately 300 kilograms of food waste per person annually by creating a symbiotic ecosystem that turns waste into resource. The pavilion's architectural brilliance lies in its multifunctional design. A cave-like tunnel leads visitors into a cross-ventilated space illuminated by indirect daylight, with a green roof crafted from reclaimed bamboo. Over just four weeks, the structure processed food waste from six on-site restaurants, generating approximately 40 eggs daily and converting organic materials into garden compost. More than just a structure, the Chicken Hero Pavilion is a social catalyst. By creating a reciprocal space between visitors and chickens, RAD+ar challenges existing stigmas around backyard poultry farming. The design embodies the concept of "Glocalization" - a hyper-local solution with global sustainability implications. This architectural intervention represents a bold statement: sustainability can be accessible, engaging, and fundamentally transformative when designed with creativity, empathy, and deep understanding of local contexts. Design Team - RAD+ar is a Jakarta-based architecture studio founded in 2017 by Antonius Richard. Longlisted for Dezeen Awards 2021 emerging architecture studio of the year, the firm focuses on extending the creative application of adaptive tropical architecture. RAD+ar believes true sustainability and architecture can only be achieved by inspiring the masses. The studio explores the core values of architecture in tropical and developing contexts. Its projects connect culture and nature, showcasing how to escape historical notions of tropicality. RAD+ar promotes sustainable architecture through a provocative, experimental, and research-driven approach. The firm aims to redefine the value of architecture in globalization and localization, expanding the limits of what we call "architecture." 2024 Previous Next
Henning Larsen + espen surnevik | Archicasting
Project Name: Højvangen Church Location: Skanderborg , Denmark Design Team: Henning Larsen + espen surnevik Total Floor Area: 1500 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Rasmus Hjortshøj】 Engineering: Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, Ramboll Landscape Architecture: Schul Landskab & Planlægning Client: Skanderborg Parish Feature: Project - Danish architecture studio Henning Larsen completed a revolutionary contemporary church building in Skanderborg, redefining the role of the church in modern society through innovative non-directional spatial design and sophisticated light manipulation. Højvangen Church marks the first new church built in the parish for over half a millennium, representing a striking exception in an era marked by church closures and increasing secularization. Strategically located on the outskirts of Skanderborg, Denmark, this 1500-square-meter building honors Danish architectural heritage while embracing contemporary ideas of community and spirituality. The church's most distinctive feature lies in its centripetal layout design, with the baptismal font positioned at the absolute center of the building rather than at the traditional altar end. This central placement allows views to open in all directions——toward the forest, cemetery, and old church tower——reinforcing the idea of the church as a "civic clearing" rather than a directional space. Henning Larsen's ingenious spatial solution challenges traditional church layouts, creating a flexible interior space without formal front or back that feels both open and intimate yet sacred. The surrounding walls shift between solid and transparent, forming pockets of privacy that balance openness with intimacy, and community with personal reflection. This adaptable "clearing" can accommodate a wide variety of events, designed to include everyone. The building's gently undulating façade invites in shifting natural light throughout the day. Permeable walls filter and shape this light to create a dynamic interplay of shadow and atmosphere, making the architecture itself part of the spiritual experience. Materials such as brick, oak, and brass create a warm, timeless atmosphere. From the outside, the church appears as a sculpted pavilion set into the landscape, connected to the existing church center by a partially underground corridor. Most notably, the project extends Henning Larsen's design philosophy into furniture design, with the studio partnering with Danish furniture maker Brdr. Krüger to design a new stackable church chair named Ekko. The chair combines elegance with durability and is certified to the highest EU standard (L2) for extreme use, marking Henning Larsen's return to furniture design after 60 years. Design Team - Founded in 1959 by Danish architect Henning Larsen, Henning Larsen has established its international reputation for mastery in daylight manipulation and sustainable design excellence. Under the current leadership of Managing Director Jacob Kurek——who began as an intern in 1997 and has guided the firm's global expansion for nearly three decades——Henning Larsen continues to push boundaries across architecture, landscape, urban design, and interiors. The studio's design philosophy centers on manipulating daylight as a tangible material, earning founder Henning Larsen recognition as "the master of light" within the architectural community. This light-centric approach, rooted in the founder's childhood experiences in Western Jutland, remains a defining characteristic of the practice's contemporary work. The architects maintain acute attention to detail whilst never losing sight of the bigger picture. The firm maintains a global presence with over 600 employees, with design communities spread across studios in eight countries. Their portfolio demonstrates exceptional versatility, spanning cultural institutions, educational facilities, and urban masterplans while consistently emphasizing environmental responsibility and social impact. The studio is committed to navigating the complex connections that bind together built environment, ecological systems, and societies at large, manifesting lasting change through co-creation, innovation, and cultivation. Henning Larsen's design excellence has been recognized through prestigious accolades including the 2012 Præmium Imperiale Architecture Laureate, the 2013 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture——Mies van der Rohe Award for Harpa Concert Hall, and the 2019 European Architect of the Year Award. Since joining the Ramboll Group in 2019, Henning Larsen has further strengthened its commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and sustainable innovation——united by shared Nordic legacies, focus on knowledge and social responsibility, and mission to craft sustainable societies where people and nature flourish. 2024 Previous Next

Project Name: Saint-Jean-de-Luz Cultural Center Location: France Design Team: Dominique Coulon & associés Total Floor Area: 3250 m² Completion: 2023 Photography: Eugeni Pons Feature: Project - Dominique Coulon & associés has completed their latest project - Saint-Jean-de-Luz Cultural Center, reinterpreting the concept of cultural architecture through a fragmentary yet harmonious design approach. This 3250-square-meter structure, located just 500 meters from the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, responds to its complex coastal context through a deliberate decomposition of form. The project's most distinctive feature is its triple-height atrium that serves as the conceptual and circulatory nucleus of the complex. Rather than conceiving the structure as a monolithic entity, the architects have choreographed a series of distinct volumes that house the center's diverse programming. This fragmentation allows for a nuanced play of scale and proportion, creating a dynamic yet balanced composition that connects the eastern theater wing with the western three-tiered volume containing music, theater, and dance spaces. The spatial layout is carefully orchestrated, with the central void functioning as more than mere circulation; it emerges as the "beating heart" of the complex, fostering social connectivity and shared experience. Generous glazing throughout this space floods the interior with natural light while offering strategic glimpses into adjacent programmatic areas, creating a visual transparency that invites exploration and interaction. The project's uniqueness lies in its relationship to the surrounding garden, with carefully positioned openings framing views of the landscaped exterior. This garden isn't merely decorative but functional, featuring an intimate open-air theater and outdoor extensions of collective practice rooms that blur the boundary between interior and exterior performance spaces. Despite its programmatic complexity, the building achieves remarkable spatial efficiency through its compact organization. Circulation is fluid and intuitive, with short, light-filled corridors connecting the various functions. The overall effect is one of poetic pragmatism - a building that satisfies its functional requirements while maintaining a sense of wonder and discovery. Design Team - Founded in 1989 when Dominique Coulon established his practice in Strasbourg after completing his architectural education, Dominique Coulon & associés has evolved into one of France's most distinguished architectural studios. The firm, which formally adopted its current name in 2008, is led by Dominique Coulon and his associate Steve Letho Duclos, who approach each project through a reflective and philosophical lens. The practice specializes in public architecture, with a diversified portfolio encompassing libraries, healthcare facilities, theaters, aquatic centers, educational institutions, and housing developments. Their work is characterized by dynamically imbricated elements and thoughtful manipulation of natural light, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of spatial complexity and contextual design. Refusing to be limited by pre-established methods, the studio explores different ways of approaching projects to rethink spaces and uses. This methodology enables the firm to synthesize heterogeneous programmatic requirements into cohesive architectural solutions that respond sensitively to their contexts, considering complexity as an approach that gives the architect freedom to deal with the heterogeneity of the project's data. The practice's commitment to architectural excellence has been acknowledged with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Golden Medal from the French Academy of Architecture in 2022, nomination for the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award in 2019, and multiple Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Awards. Dominique Coulon's theoretical perspectives inform both his professional work and his academic activities at the School of Architecture in Strasbourg, where he founded the master's program in 'Architecture and Complexity.' 2023 Previous Next
- Linho住宅 TETRO Arquitetura | Archicasting
2024 Previous Next

Project Name: THE CONTOUR Location: Ota City, Tokyo, Japan Design Team: KAMIYA ARCHITECTS Total Floor Area: 633.07 m² Completion: January 2024 Photography: Takumi Ota, nanako ono Design Feature: Project - Along the bustling Kanshichi-dori arterial road in Tokyo's Ota City, "THE CONTOUR" residential building stands out for its innovative design approach. Situated in a highly visible and challenging urban environment, KAMIYA ARCHITECTS responded to multiple challenges including traffic noise, vibration, and pedestrian sightlines by creating a living experience that seamlessly integrates environmental protection with architectural expression. The core concept of the building is "contour line façade design," achieved through precisely carved 70 horizontal joints across a solid reinforced concrete wall, unfolding like topographical contour lines across the elevation. This bold design gesture effectively blocks noise and vibration from the arterial road while creating a striking sculptural presence that serves as an architectural landmark within urban infrastructure. The architects' ingenious solution employs an asymmetrical sectional strategy: the elevation facing Kanshichi-dori remains completely closed, while the remaining three sides open generously to the quiet residential neighborhood. This composition utilizes a load-bearing wall structure that conceals structural elements, creating unexpectedly bright and spacious interior spaces that challenge conventional perceptions of roadside residential buildings. The façade design reflects a perfect balance between function and aesthetics, with the 70 horizontal joints serving not only as visual elements but also as an organizational framework for building components. Openings, railings, construction joints, and building services all precisely align with this grid system, creating unified and coherent architectural expression while meeting complex multi-unit housing requirements. The protruding volumes at ground level extend like furniture, creating an approachable urban interface for the retail space. "THE CONTOUR" exemplifies how urban environmental challenges can be transformed into unique design opportunities. Here, the building façade serves not merely as a protective barrier but as a medium for dialogue with the city, successfully balancing residential privacy needs with urban visibility requirements, creating a contemporary residential building that possesses both sculptural quality and everyday functionality. Design Team - KAMIYA ARCHITECTS was established by Shuhei Kamiya in 2017 and has grown to become one of Japan's most internationally oriented architectural practices. Born in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture in 1982, Kamiya graduated from Waseda University Graduate School of Science and Engineering in 2007, subsequently accumulating rich international experience at two world-class architectural firms. He served as Chief Architect at Kengo Kuma and Associates for nine years, deeply learning the essence of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and detailed design. Subsequently, he worked as Senior Architect at Denmark's Bjarke Ingels Group, leading international competitions and large-scale high-rise building projects, while conducting in-depth research on Nordic design culture through the Japanese Government's Program for Upcoming Artists overseas residency. Currently, the KAMIYA team consists of multiple professionals, including qualified architects Shunsuke Sawai, Masumi Ogawa, and Takahiro Yamaguchi, providing comprehensive services including architectural design, urban planning, product design, and consulting. Operating as a first-class certified architectural practice, the firm is renowned for its cross-disciplinary innovative thinking and dedicated pursuit of craft details. KAMIYA's design philosophy emphasizes the organic integration of logical thinking, artistic innovation, and business strategy, pursuing the simultaneous presence of fun, simplicity, beauty, and comfort within singular designs. Project Name: SAB Office Building Location: Prenzlauer Berg district, Berlin, Germany Design Team: Sergei Tchoban Architects Project Partner: Philipp Bauer Project Leaders: Philipp Bauer, Kenan Ozan Design Team Members: Valeria Kashirina, René Hoch, Puk Paludan, Manel Reig Florensa, Azzurra Pippia General Contractor: OTTO WULFF Bauunternehmung GmbH, Berlin Project Management: N.D.C Projektentwicklung GmbH, AO Berlin Lighting Design: jack be nimble Lichtplaner & Ingenieure, Berlin Total Floor Area: 6,150 m² Structure: Reinforced Concrete Skeleton Structure Floors: 5 Stories Above Ground, 2 Basement Levels Special Features: Historical Beer Cellar Integration, Green Roof Capacity: 400 Workstations Completion: 2024 Photographer: HG Esch Feature: Project - Architect Sergei Tchoban has unveiled a striking office building in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district, where a contemporary interpretation of industrial architecture meets historical brewing heritage. The SAB Office Building, completed in 2024, stands on the former site of the Koenigstadt Brewery, one of Berlin's largest historical breweries, and masterfully negotiates the transition between past and present through its distinctive form and materiality. The building's most compelling feature is its dynamic volumetric composition, where the upper floors execute a bold 15-degree rotation above a solid clinker brick base. This geometric manipulation creates an illusion of lightness while opening up new visual corridors to the surrounding historical brewery buildings. The facade treatment reinforces this sculptural gesture through sawtooth-like, scaly windows in dark aluminum frames, complemented by alternating two-story bay windows that emphasize the building's rotational aesthetic. Tchoban's design demonstrates particular sensitivity to the site's industrial heritage by incorporating remnants of the original brewery's vaulted beer cellar into an outdoor space beneath the cantilevered upper floors. This architectural palimpsest creates a dramatic dialogue between old and new, while the building's clinker brick base establishes a material connection to the surrounding Wilhelminian-era architecture. The six-story structure, accommodating 400 workstations, intelligently responds to its sloping site by embedding the ground floor half a story into the terrain. The architect has enhanced the workplace environment through thoughtful additions including a Japanese garden, a conference center with a central foyer, and a green roof that conceals technical equipment from neighboring viewpoints. Perhaps most notably, the building's glazed facades create an ever-changing display of reflections that visually weave together the historical streetscape with its contemporary intervention, demonstrating how modern architecture can both stand out and belong in a historical context. Design Team - Sergei Tchoban Architects, established in Berlin in 1996, has emerged as one of Europe's most distinguished architectural practices, renowned for its innovative approach to contextual design and sustainable urban development. Led by founding principal Sergei Tchoban, who trained at the prestigious Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, the firm has consistently demonstrated excellence in integrating contemporary architectural expressions with historical urban fabrics. - MimMim 别墅群 On Architects Inc. | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Nestled along the golden shores of Jinha Beach in Ulju-gun, South Korea lies MimMim Villa, a modern architectural gem envisioned by On Architects Inc. Occupying 397 sqm, this boutique villa complex transcends a mere lodging to become an artistic amalgamation of breathtaking vistas and striking contemporary forms. Inspired by the nearby natural islands, the design manifests as seven independent “islands” interlinked with the lush surroundings. Stepping into these carefully shaped volumes transports one into an ethereal space where rays of sunlight filter through frameless sky lights, dancing across tranquil waters. Clean geometric lines and bare concrete façades contrast dramatically against dying grasses in autumn, achieved through simple 11x11m square modules around open-air plunge pools. An inner glass enclosure offers privacy while allowing unobstructed views outward. Here, On Architects’ impeccable interiors balance industrial rawness with modern sensibilities seen in the elegant custom furnishings and ample daylighting. Thoughtful detailing permeates this intentionally minimalist retreat as glimpses of horizon envelop each room. When night falls, patches of light permeate through latticed beams reminiscent of beaming lighthouses, breathing life into this vibrant architectural archipelago. Every island tells a poetic story of space and shadows, providing an escape where one can embrace stillness and marvel at nature’s quiet splendor. Design Team - Guided by insightful social observations, On Architects envisions inventive spaces that foster human connections. Since 2008, the Seoul-based firm has created sensitive, people-centric designs from residential to commercial. On Architects embraces an experimental approach, pioneering sustainable alternatives that add cultural value. Their contextual response eschews physical limitations, weaving spaces in harmony with surroundings. Natural light and transparency define airy, minimalist interiors. Prominent projects like MimMim Villa combine raw industrial textures with fluid forms and geometric lines. The resultant landscapes bridge indoor and outdoor, providing an immersive experience. With multiple accolades affirming their ethos of imaginative functionality, On Architects continues leading Korea's architectural innovation. 2023 Previous Next
KWY.studio | Archicasting
Feature:Project - KWY.studio 's Desert X AlUla 2024 Visitor Centre embraces the rugged desert canyon landscape of AlUla, Saudi Arabia with a strikingly minimal design that highlights the natural geological formations. Located at the end of a narrow canyon, the building's position and spatial organization are directly informed by the cul-de-sac site nestled between towering rock cliffs. The centre's understated form defers to the surrounding scenery, with a monolithic presence that appears carved from the stratified canyon walls. A carefully choreographed processional sequence guides visitors from the arrival deck through compressed prismatic vestibules into an open courtyard oriented 45 degrees from the main axis. This rotation creates intimate spaces that frame diagonal views of the sublime desert panorama. While the angled courtyard establishes a sense of enclosure, cut-outs and a circular oculus intentionally reveal glimpses of the sky and craggy landscape beyond. The thoughtful journey culminates on the West side with an uninterrupted vista across the desert floor through a mirrored vestibule that expands the sense of depth. KWY.studio 's refined design deftly balances exposure to and protection from AlUla's extremes. The Desert X AlUla 2024 Visitor Centre offers a tranquil spatial experience that elevates an appreciation for the region's dramatic natural environment through a nuanced interplay of solid, void, light and shadow. Design Team - Founded in 2009 in Berlin and Los Angeles, KWY.studio is a multidisciplinary platform that investigates the nature of collaboration through specific projects. Led by principal Ricardo Gomes, the firm takes a process-oriented approach, beginning each commission with in-depth dialogue and analysis among invited specialists from diverse creative fields. With a talented staff including Luise Marter and Rui Neto, among others, KWY.studio exemplifies an accurate, professional approach that pushes the boundaries of what architecture can be through interdisciplinary exploration and seamless collaboration.
