LMTLS | Archicasting
Feature: Project - The new SKIN1004 flagship store in the heart of Myeong-dong, Seoul emerges as a striking presence with its textured rock façadecontrasting with the glass storefronts typical of the neighborhood. The space artfully brings the essence of “untouched nature” into the urban setting through rich earth tones, organic shapes and textures that reference the untamed landscapes of Madagascar. Upon entering the craggy stone frontage, visitors traverse reed-lined “trails” and encounter swaying video walls depicting natural scenes, fostering an immersive multisensory connection with raw, primordial nature. Carefully orchestrated lighting and visibility between the exhibition-focused ground floor and the product lounge and retail area above enhance the continuity between the spaces tied together by an organic sculptural centerpiece. The innovative scheme spearheaded by Korean firm LMTLS liberates the brand identity from clichéd representations of nature with vibrant sand-hued tones and rough-hewn textures belying the sophisticated blend of natural inspirations filtered through contemporary form. The creative approach shapes an intriguing and unexpected haven contrasting the teeming urban activity outside, standing as a distinctive retail environment where cosmetics emerge as if concentrated from the very essence of the earth. Design Team - LMTLS is a New York & Seoul based architectural design group whose three co-founders, Daeho Lee, Beomki Lee, and Jaeyual Lee, began their collaboration at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during their Master of Architecture studies. Founded in 2015, the firm is committed to catalyzing change through innovative design, navigating towards the optimal design direction for each project. As stated in their manifesto: "Beyond limits, our creative design thinking transcends constraints, weaving a tapestry of boundless possibilities. Embracing diverse approaches, free from stereotypes, we manifest an endless expression without boundaries." 2023 Previous Next

- Vespa 住宅 Habitat Studio Architects | Archicasting
2024 Previous Next
- Richter中心 Zoboki Design and Architecture | Archicasting
Project Name: Richter Center Location: Budapest, Hungary Design Team: ZDA - Zoboki Design and Architecture Total Floor Area: 17000 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Dániel Dömölky Feature: Project - ZDA - Zoboki Design and Architecture has completed their latest project - Richter Center on the company's historical production site in Budapest, creating a headquarters building that both pays homage to tradition and looks toward the future. This 17,000-square-meter structure skillfully combines functionality, sustainability, and distinctive form, marking a new era for the pharmaceutical company Richter Gedeon. The design team based their work on three main principles: functionality, innovation, and moderation, carefully crafting a corporate space that both meets efficient office requirements and presents a unique appearance. The project's most distinctive feature is its undulating façade system, where each louver follows uniform rules while maintaining unique forms, symbolizing the dual nature of research and development work: invention and strict regulation. This parametric design required new tool-based collaboration between architects and engineers, creating a unified artistic whole when viewed from a distance, while revealing precision in details up close. The interior design continues the sense of flow seen on the exterior, especially in the building's central space, where virtuoso stair structures not only serve circulation but create places for communication and meetings. Creating large communal spaces required overcoming structural challenges, including the use of specially dimensioned steel beams and glass pillars. The design team also gave special attention to sustainability issues, such as solutions for heat absorption by large surfaces, ensuring ideal interior comfort. What makes this project unique is how it successfully connects the Richter company with the Chemical Research and Office Building (also designed by ZDA in 2007) through a conference unit, forming a symbolic bridge that unites research and corporate management both functionally and symbolically. Design Team - Founded in 1997, ZDA has evolved into one of the most important architectural workshops in the Central European region, establishing a determinant position in the Hungarian design market while gradually expanding into international projects, including work in China. The firm is led by Gábor Zoboki DLA habil., recipient of the Ybl, Pro Architectura, and Prima Primissima awards, who guides the team in coupling high-quality architectural design with professional technical knowledge, further strengthened by Anglo-Saxon working principles and methodology. The practice undertakes a wide range of project types, including multifunctional cultural centers, research buildings with state-of-the-art technology, office buildings that especially inspire human contact, as well as reconstruction assignments of historic buildings and lovely hotels and residential projects. They have created characteristic examples in all these areas, receiving numerous domestic and international awards. The studio's portfolio also extends to conceptual urban-planning tasks and feasibility studies for large-scale projects. ZDA has achieved particularly important successes in cultural buildings with unique technological backgrounds, resulting in numerous foreign commissions. Their international connections have become extensive regarding design partners, professional consultants, and architectural offices. The firm's services encompass the entire design process: from urban planning through architectural and interior design to the engineering coordination of construction processes, embracing international creative communities counting even several hundred persons. According to Zoboki, the architect's vocation has two facets: one humanistic, driven by ideals, constantly rethinking the conditions of human existence; the other materialistic, mastering technical and technological knowledge. He believes that to create good architecture, one must strive for high-level cultivation of both these qualities. 2024 Previous Next

Feature: Project - Spink St. Office Building, a remarkable addition to the leafy bayside suburb of Brighton, has been meticulously crafted by Peter Ryan Architects. Commissioned by Align Property Partners, this speculative office development stands as a testament to innovative design and contextual sensitivity. Nestled between the Nepean Highway and the Sandringham rail line, the triangular project site has been transformed into a four-story office haven, crowned with a rooftop terrace that offers breathtaking views of Port Philip Bay and the Melbourne CBD. Targeting a niche market where tenants seek generous floorplates, flexible spaces, and abundant natural light, the architects have embraced a refined domestic aesthetic, aligning with high-end residential developments. The building's form responds thoughtfully to its context, separating pedestrian and vehicle access. The lobby entrance and café connect seamlessly with the surrounding footpaths and bike trails, while the car parking facilities are strategically located adjacent to Nepean Highway, ensuring a harmonious coexistence with the urban fabric. Reflecting the planning overlays' call for a Key Landmark Redevelopment, the project's scale soars to five stories, with vertical sides simplifying and strengthening the building's volume. The patterned precast concrete façade on the south elevation continues the façade articulation, responding to the adjacent mixed-use concrete developments. Overcoming challenging site constraints through innovative structural solutions, Peter Ryan Architects has delivered a high-quality office space that seamlessly blends functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability, setting a benchmark for suburban commercial developments. Design Team - Founded in 2015, Peter Ryan Architects has swiftly established itself as a formidable force in the architectural realm, punching well above its weight with a lean team of just eight members. Under the astute leadership of Peter Ryan, this close-knit practice exemplifies the notion that size is no barrier to excellence. As Ryan succinctly puts it, "We're a small firm that acts like a large one. You don't need a large team to deliver a large project. You require a smart and efficient one." This philosophy resonates profoundly in the words of Ben Spooner, Managing Director of Caribbean Park: "Peter has this ability to work with everyone in our team. It's considerably more than designing a project. He carries everything through from the design phase through to the final delivery. He understands us, and like us, he's extremely structured and focused. He knows these buildings are designed and built to last for generations." Eschewing the practice of outsourcing, Peter Ryan Architects takes immense pride in its comprehensive in-house capabilities, seamlessly integrating visual documentation, planning, and implementation. Their diverse portfolio spans large-scale commercial projects, office buildings, hotels, warehouses, logistical facilities, childcare centers, and exquisite garden pavilions, each a testament to their unwavering commitment to design excellence and commercial pragmatism. Previous Next
- Långholmen 住宅 Mer Architects | Archicasting
2024 Previous Next

2024 Previous Next
Archicasting
Project Name: Breeze Auditorium Location: Hongkou District, Shanghai, China Design Team: SHISUO Design Office Building Area: 680 m² Completion: 2024 Photographers: Zhu Runzi, Lv Xiaobin, DONG Architecture Photography, Sa Nifu, Ye Jianyuan Feature: Project - Nestled within Shanghai's historic Lu Xun Park, the Breeze Auditorium by SHISUO Design emerges as a masterful synthesis of contemporary architecture and natural harmony. This 680-square-meter pavilion transforms a formerly forgotten corner of the park into a luminous sanctuary that serves both as a ceremonial space and a vital public amenity. The structure's most striking feature is its wing-like steel framework that appears to float above a landscaped base. The architects achieved remarkable structural efficiency using slender I-beam columns—measuring just 100x150mm—to support an impressive span of 42 meters in length, 15 meters in width, and 12 meters in height. This engineering feat is enhanced by a sophisticated double-layer perforated roof system that acts as an environmental filter, creating subtly different atmospheric conditions depending on the weather. The project's success lies in its response to two critical challenges: achieving high-quality construction within budget and time constraints, while creating a landmark spiritual architecture that harmonizes with its surroundings. The solution manifests in the building's dual nature—a soaring ceremonial space above and a topographic plinth below that seamlessly integrates with the landscape through a series of steps, viewing platforms, and water features. The careful choreography of approach is particularly noteworthy. Visitors traverse ancient stone steps and bamboo groves before encountering the hall's presence, creating a processional experience that gradually separates them from the urban bustle. This journey culminates in a dramatic main space that serves as a blank canvas for various public events, from weddings to exhibitions. Environmental sensitivity is evident throughout the design. The low eaves filter noise from nearby commercial streets, while the building's form facilitates natural ventilation through stack effect, creating a microclimate of gentle breezes even during Shanghai's humid summers. The water pool, deliberately left untreated, has become a sanctuary for local wildlife, transforming the structure into an unexpected urban ecosystem. In its first six months, Breeze Auditorium has already established itself as a cultural catalyst, hosting events ranging from flower markets to international fashion shows, accumulating over 30 million social media impressions. Through its thoughtful integration of ceremonial grandeur and human-scale details, the project represents a new typology of public architecture—one that celebrates both the extraordinary moments and the quiet daily rhythms of urban life. Design Team - SHISUO Design Office, established in 2023 in Shanghai, represents a new wave of contemporary Chinese architectural practice that bridges phenomenological sensitivity with tectonic innovation. Founded by architects Sa Nifu and Chang Shan, the studio has rapidly emerged as a significant voice in Asia's architectural landscape, gaining international recognition for their nuanced approach to materiality and spatial narrative. The firm's design philosophy is anchored in what they term "authentic tectonics" - a methodology that emphasizes the honest expression of construction logic while maintaining deep respect for genius loci. Their portfolio, though young, demonstrates remarkable versatility across scales, from urban planning to interior detailing, embracing the modernist ideal of total design "from city to spoon." Under the leadership of Sa Nifu and Chang Shan, SHISUO has developed a distinctive design language that synthesizes phenomenological experience with constructional clarity. Their work has garnered attention from prestigious international publications including Wallpaper*, Dezeen, and ArchDaily, establishing them as a emerging force in contemporary architectural discourse. The practice's commitment to material authenticity and spatial poetry is evident in projects like the Breeze Auditorium (2024), where structural expressionism meets contemplative space-making. This approach has positioned SHISUO at the forefront of a new generation of Chinese architects who are redefining the relationship between traditional spatial concepts and contemporary architectural expression. 2024 Previous Next
Daymark | Archicasting
2025 Previous Next

Project Name: Kunitachi Terrace Location: Kunitachi, Tokyo, Japan Design Team: Tomoyuki Kurokawa Architects Total Floor Area: 458.65 m² Completion: June 2024 Photography: Yasuhiro Nakayama Design Feature: Project - Located in Kunitachi, Tokyo, the Kunitachi Terrace project represents a revolutionary cooperative housing concept meticulously designed by Tomoyuki Kurokawa Architects. Comprising six townhouse-style units, the project redefines collective living spaces through an innovative garden network. Situated in a historic residential district developed during the Taisho era, the project strategically addresses the diminishing spatial richness of the neighborhood. The architects envisioned a dynamic living system, intricately weaving residential units together through four distinct garden typologies: a communal courtyard surrounding the residences, private gardens created by the building's folded exterior, elevated personal terraces, and roof gardens offering graduated levels of privacy and interaction. These spaces are more than aesthetic additions—they are active living environments that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, private and collective. By adopting a cooperative housing model, the architects transformed potential limitations into opportunities, enabling residents to actively participate in designing and maintaining shared spaces, creating what the designers describe as a "living common." The project's architectural flexibility is particularly noteworthy. Instead of imposing a rigid design, the architects established guiding principles allowing gardens and living spaces to evolve organically. Cross-mezzanine layouts ensure each unit has a unique relationship with its surrounding environment, making residents active participants in shaping their living landscape. Design Team - Founded in 2012 by Tomoyuki Kurokawa, the practice has emerged as a distinctive voice in contemporary Japanese architectural design. Kurokawa, a graduate of Tokyo Institute of Technology, brings extensive international design experience from prestigious practices including Takkenaka Corporation, Herzog & de Meuron, and Kengo Kuma's Urban Design Office. The firm is renowned for its expertise in residential, institutional, and public space design, continuously pushing the boundaries of contemporary Japanese architectural discourse. Kurokawa's design philosophy seamlessly integrates structural innovation with environmental responsiveness, earning multiple accolades in architectural competitions, including Good Design Awards and notable nominations. 2024 Previous Next
Archicasting
Project Name: House of Cross Location: Beijing, China Design Team: Chaoffice Total Floor Area: 334 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Zhu Yumeng Feature: Project - Located in Beijing's Tongzhou District, the House of Cross represents Chaoffice's response to post-pandemic lifestyle shifts, designed as a single-story residence that accommodates three generations living and working together. Facing strict building regulations—residential plots limited to single-story structures with eaves no higher than 3 meters—the design team transformed these constraints into creative opportunities. The 334-square-meter residence adopts an innovative cross-shaped layout with wings extending in different directions and joining at their ends. To maintain the proportions of the central courtyard, the side wings were consolidated and pulled away from the perimeter, creating a narrow secondary courtyard at the rear. Similarly, the north-facing main hall was shifted southward, opening up a backyard. Each wing now enjoys dual-sided natural light, while the entire courtyard benefits from uninterrupted sightlines. The building's structural framework ingeniously recedes toward the roof ridge, with structural elements converging at the shear wall cores to form a cross-shaped structural anchor. The house, much like a mushroom, is supported at its center while its eaves extend outward in all directions. Freeing the perimeter from structural constraints allows the façade to dissolve, merging interior and exterior spaces. The cross-shaped layout creates a view that moves from near to far—courtyard, house, courtyard again—revealing overlapping scenes of daily life. The connection between glass façade frames and eaves was carefully designed: the eaves beams were lowered to 2.4 meters, allowing the eaves to extend downward like the edge of a mushroom cap. This solution maintains a comfortable ceiling height while creating a sense of shelter—whether under bright sun or during heavy rain, those sitting by the window feel like small creatures nestled beneath a mushroom cap, protected and at ease. The cross-configuration spatial arrangement addresses the needs of multi-generational living, with private spaces positioned at the four terminal points, providing a balance of intimacy and separation. Grandparents, parents, children, and guests each have their private spaces, while the central areas naturally become public zones where the family gathers and interacts. House of Cross creates an architectural language that is both contemporary and rooted in place through the combination of materials like laminated eucalyptus plywood and bridge-cut-off aluminum alloy windows, demonstrating Chaoffice's design philosophy of addressing real-life challenges rather than pursuing abstract traditions. Design Team - Chaoffice was officially established by Cheng Zhi in 2017, initially named as an observation and research institution parallel to "OEU Studio." Taking on approximately three projects annually, it has maintained the scale of a small studio, primarily led by Cheng Zhi with occasional collaboration from junior architects. After obtaining his master's degree in 2008, Cheng Zhi worked at URBANUS Beijing for six years before founding "OEU Studio" with university classmates and transitioning to independent practice in 2017. Chaoffice's methodology transcends conventional architectural practice, positioning design as one facet of a multidisciplinary approach that includes research, writing, documentation, and theoretical exploration. The studio's work is characterized by its response to site-specific conditions and hidden spatial orders, informed by Cheng's ongoing research projects such as "Impermanence in Various Forms"—an investigation into enduring urban elements that transform over time, echoing Aldo Rossi's theories on urban permanences. Cheng's design approach places architecture in parallel with observational research, reading, and writing, which mutually nourish each other to form a unique design perspective. Project Name: MAY DAY CAFE Location: Yeoju-si, South Korea Design Team: SPACE DOT Total Floor Area: 330 m² Completion: 2022 Photography: Courtesy of SPACE DOT Feature: Project - SPACE DOT transformed a site in the historic village of Taepyeong-ri, Yeoju into May Day Cafe. Completed in 2022, the project fully embodies the core philosophy of providing "complete rest" spaces for urban dwellers. Taepyeong-ri has historically been a place where scholars traveling to Hanyang for civil service examinations would pause to rest, named for its peaceful and harmonious energy. The design of May Day Cafe began with a clear concept: creating a space that could "embrace the sky." The architects were inspired by a towering cedar tree named "Owol-i" (May) at the center of the site, whose form—branching skyward from a single trunk into two arms—directly influenced the cafe's twin-building configuration. The architects positioned Building A to house the kitchen and staff areas, while Building B opens panoramically through floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides, offering unobstructed views of the mountain ridgeline. The core highlight of the project is its sensitive response to the site's disrupted topography from development. To conceal the incongruous retaining walls created by construction, Building A was strategically arranged as a screen, while Building B, positioned at the village's highest point, maximizes connection with the natural landscape. The architects chose stone and wood as primary materials—elements once native to the land—as a gesture of homage to the nature lost to development. In terms of material selection, the architects deliberately chose elements that echo the site's original natural state. Stone and wood finishes serve not only as aesthetic choices but also as environmental memorials. Tranquil reflecting pools on either side of the building capture the ever-changing colors of the sky as they shift with wind, while a large window beneath the grand roof fully frames the sky and scenery of Taepyeong-ri, and lower side windows bring in natural light that transforms with the seasons. The lighting design emphasizes the seasonal variations of natural light, with the interplay of warm timber and overall white spatial voids creating a soothing and serene atmosphere. The central cedar "Owol-i" serves not only as the source of design inspiration but also becomes a key element symbolizing the cafe's identity—a space providing May-like warmth, comfort, and stability for rest. By combining cultural memory, natural inspiration, and contemporary architectural design, SPACE DOT created a modern sanctuary that transcends traditional commercial spaces, authentically expressing a contemporary interpretation of Korea's traditional rest stops, providing a place of tranquility and restoration for weary urban travelers. Design Team - SPACE DOT was established in 2021 by Seungwon Lee and Kyung Il Kim. The firm specializes in hospitality and commercial architecture design, known for its unique understanding of spatial fundamentalism—believing that architecture begins with individual points that aggregate into lines, surfaces, and ultimately cohesive spatial experiences. The firm's representative works demonstrate their commitment to contextually responsive design, gaining international recognition within just a few years, including the UNESCO Prix Versailles 2024 for Restaurants, the iF Design Award 2025 in Interior Architecture (one of the world's top three design awards), and the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2024 Asia-Café category. Under the continued leadership of Seungwon Lee and Kyung Il Kim, SPACE DOT has established its position among Korea's emerging architectural practices. The firm's design methodology transcends conventional aesthetic considerations, prioritizing sensory and emotional engagement while maintaining functional performance. They demonstrate particular expertise in adaptive site strategies, material authenticity, and biophilic design integration. SPACE DOT's creative philosophy emphasizes that each project should carry unique brand narratives, combining the cultural significance of place with contemporary functional requirements. They believe space is the art form closest to our lives, therefore committed to creating architectural experiences that not only impress visually but also resonate with users on sensory and emotional levels. The May Day Cafe project fully demonstrates their exceptional ability to transform brand concepts into architectural experiences. 2022 Previous Next

Project Name: Hotel Romeo Roma Design Team: Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) Location: Rome, Italy Building Type: Hotel Renovation Number of Rooms: 74 Completion: 2024 Photographer:Chris Dalton,Jacopo Spilimbergo Feature: Project - Zaha Hadid Architects has transformed a 16th-century palazzo in Rome into a luxury hotel, creating a striking dialogue between historical architecture and contemporary design through a reinterpretation of traditional Roman vaults. The Hotel Romeo Roma, located on Via di Ripetta near Piazza del Popolo, showcases the firm's signature fluid aesthetics while preserving the building's historical elements spanning five centuries. Led by project director Paola Cattarin, the renovation project takes inspiration from Rome's architectural palimpsest - the layering of different historical periods - with a particular focus on the city's tradition of vaulted ceilings. The architects used this architectural element as a conceptual foundation, developing a contemporary interpretation that extends from the ceiling designs to the furniture, creating a cohesive design language throughout the space. The 74-room hotel features individually designed spaces that reject the typical modular approach of hotel architecture. Instead, each room presents its own unique spatial configuration, responding to the palazzo's irregular geometry. The design team developed a sophisticated "second skin" solution to integrate modern amenities within the historical structure, creating a thin cavity between the existing walls and new interior surfaces to house technical services while preserving the original architecture. During the renovation, which required 230 different building permissions and involved 49 companies, workers discovered a previously unknown Roman workshop featuring opus reticulatum - a 2,000-year-old diamond-shaped stone facing. This archaeological finding has been preserved and incorporated into the hotel design through a 90-square-meter gallery beneath the garden, visible through the glass floor of the hotel's swimming pool. The project demonstrates a masterful blend of historical preservation and contemporary design, where materials such as Carrara Statuarietto marble, Makassar ebony, and brass create rich, layered interiors that echo the building's accumulated history while establishing a new chapter in its architectural evolution. Design Team - Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), established in 1979 by the late Pritzker Prize laureate Zaha Hadid, has evolved into one of the world's most influential architectural practices, now operating as an Employee Benefit Trust under the leadership of Principal Patrik Schumacher. With headquarters in Clerkenwell, London, the 500-strong firm continues to push the boundaries of parametric design and computational architecture. Known for their distinctive architectural language characterized by fluid geometries and innovative spatial concepts, ZHA has consistently delivered groundbreaking projects across civic, cultural, and commercial sectors. Their portfolio includes iconic works such as the MAXXI Museum in Rome (Stirling Prize 2010), the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, and the Beijing Daxing International Airport terminal. Under Schumacher's direction since 2016, the practice has expanded its technological capabilities, notably establishing ZHAI (Zaha Hadid Analytics + Insights), a dedicated unit exploring AI-driven design methodologies. The firm's contemporary work continues to exemplify their commitment to research-driven architecture, sustainable innovation, and complex geometry optimization, while maintaining the practice's signature approach to urban integration and contextual response. Recent projects like the BEEAH Headquarters in UAE showcase their evolving expertise in combining parametric design with environmental consciousness. 2024 Previous Next

The 15,000-square-meter project, nestled within Liuquan Lake Park, revolutionizes the concept of children's recreational spaces by transforming natural topography into an adventurous playground. The project's most striking feature is its water drop-shaped foothill ring, elevated four meters above the site's lowest point. This architectural intervention creates a three-dimensional exploration space that challenges traditional playground layouts. The ring serves as a connecting thread between natural ridges, artificial elevations, and play areas, effectively blurring the boundaries between structured play and organic landscape. Drawing inspiration from local mythology, the designers incorporated a sculptural slide in the form of 'Yu Xiao', a mythical beast, which serves as both a landmark and a functional play element. This centerpiece exemplifies the project's successful fusion of cultural storytelling with contemporary playground design. The playground's terrain has been thoughtfully manipulated to create a dynamic landscape that appears to have emerged naturally from the surrounding foothills. The design team achieved this by implementing varying elevations, strategic sight lines, and a harmonious blend of hard and soft surfaces. This approach results in a space that feels both designed and organically grown. With sixteen distinct types of play equipment integrated throughout the site, the paradise offers an unprecedented variety of recreational opportunities. The design eschews traditional playground hierarchies in favor of a more fluid, interconnected space that encourages exploratory play and creative engagement. The project stands as a testament to how contemporary landscape architecture can create spaces that serve multiple purposes: preserving natural topography, celebrating cultural heritage, and providing innovative play opportunities for visitors of all ages. It represents a new paradigm in playground design where the landscape itself becomes an integral part of the play experience. Design Team - HID Landscape Architecture, established in Suzhou Industrial Park in 2015, has rapidly emerged as one of China's most innovative landscape design practices, synthesizing Eastern philosophical principles with contemporary design methodologies. Under the leadership of principals Wu Hao and Zhang Lu, the firm has developed a distinctive approach to spatial composition that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. The practice's design philosophy is anchored in what they term "spatial logic of modern life," a framework that integrates site-specific environmental conditions with cultural narratives. This methodology has been evident in their portfolio of works spanning public realms, cultural landscapes, and urban interventions across China. HID's rigorous design process emphasizes three key components: comprehensive site analysis, iterative design development, and meticulous construction oversight. Their integrated approach to landscape architecture encompasses everything from initial conceptual studies through to detailed implementation, ensuring design integrity at every scale. The firm's commitment to environmental stewardship is reflected in their sustainable design strategies, which prioritize native species selection, water-sensitive urban design, and adaptive reuse of existing site elements. Currently headquartered in Suzhou's vibrant design district, HID's team of 45 professionals continues to push the boundaries of contemporary landscape architecture while remaining deeply rooted in Chinese cultural context. 2024 Previous Next
Orange Architects | Archicasting
Project Name: Beaufort Residential Tower Location: Zeist, The Netherlands Design Team: Orange Architects Lead Architects: Jeroen Schipper, Julija Osipenko, Rik Meijer Project Area: 4,400 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: Sebastian van Damme Collaborators: Urban Planning: wUrck Client: Slokker Vastgoed BV, NCB-Projectrealisatie Construction: Slokker Bouwgroep Feature: Project - Orange Architects has completed Beaufort, a sculptural residential tower in Zeist, Netherlands, that appears to twist as it rises through the forest canopy. The 10-story building features a striking composition of stacked volumes that rotate 90 degrees on each floor, creating a dynamic interplay of protruding balconies and recessed outdoor spaces. Located on the edge of Kerckebosch neighborhood, the tower houses 19 luxury apartments and serves as a landmark gateway to the area. The design draws direct inspiration from its woodland setting, incorporating three natural elements – sand, tree trunk, and leaf – as primary themes that manifest in both form and materiality. The building's most distinctive feature is its orchestrated arrangement of L-shaped apartments, which are mirrored on each floor and rotate relative to the level below. This geometric play results in a series of generous "outdoor rooms" that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, allowing residents to feel immersed in the surrounding forest landscape. Sustainability and biophilic design principles are woven throughout the project. The facade combines sustainable Fraké wood cladding with demountable GRC panels, while a geothermal heat pump system and rooftop solar panels help the building achieve NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards. The semi-underground parking garage is ingeniously concealed beneath a landscape of local vegetation, with features like turf bio-blocks and tree trunk retaining walls seamlessly integrating the structure into its natural context. The tower's rational structural grid belies its sculptural appearance, with a central core and perimeter columns supporting the rotating floor plates. Panoramic windows and threshold-free spaces ensure accessibility and maximize views of the forest setting, creating what Orange Architects describes as a collection of "forest villas" that stack vertically into the sky. Design Team - Founded in 2010 in Rotterdam, Orange Architects has established itself as a leading force in contemporary architecture, consistently delivering innovative solutions to complex spatial challenges. Under the leadership of Patrick Meijers and Jeroen Schipper, the practice has cultivated a distinctive approach that merges conceptual rigor with contextual sensitivity.
