Feature: Project - Nestled along the golden shores of Jinha Beach in Ulju-gun, South Korea lies MimMim Villa, a modern architectural gem envisioned by On Architects Inc. Occupying 397 sqm, this boutique villa complex transcends a mere lodging to become an artistic amalgamation of breathtaking vistas and striking contemporary forms. Inspired by the nearby natural islands, the design manifests as seven independent “islands” interlinked with the lush surroundings. Stepping into these carefully shaped volumes transports one into an ethereal space where rays of sunlight filter through frameless sky lights, dancing across tranquil waters. Clean geometric lines and bare concrete façades contrast dramatically against dying grasses in autumn, achieved through simple 11x11m square modules around open-air plunge pools. An inner glass enclosure offers privacy while allowing unobstructed views outward. Here, On Architects’ impeccable interiors balance industrial rawness with modern sensibilities seen in the elegant custom furnishings and ample daylighting. Thoughtful detailing permeates this intentionally minimalist retreat as glimpses of horizon envelop each room. When night falls, patches of light permeate through latticed beams reminiscent of beaming lighthouses, breathing life into this vibrant architectural archipelago. Every island tells a poetic story of space and shadows, providing an escape where one can embrace stillness and marvel at nature’s quiet splendor. Design Team - Guided by insightful social observations, On Architects envisions inventive spaces that foster human connections. Since 2008, the Seoul-based firm has created sensitive, people-centric designs from residential to commercial. On Architects embraces an experimental approach, pioneering sustainable alternatives that add cultural value. Their contextual response eschews physical limitations, weaving spaces in harmony with surroundings. Natural light and transparency define airy, minimalist interiors. Prominent projects like MimMim Villa combine raw industrial textures with fluid forms and geometric lines. The resultant landscapes bridge indoor and outdoor, providing an immersive experience. With multiple accolades affirming their ethos of imaginative functionality, On Architects continues leading Korea's architectural innovation. 2023 Previous Next
KWY.studio | Archicasting
Feature:Project - KWY.studio 's Desert X AlUla 2024 Visitor Centre embraces the rugged desert canyon landscape of AlUla, Saudi Arabia with a strikingly minimal design that highlights the natural geological formations. Located at the end of a narrow canyon, the building's position and spatial organization are directly informed by the cul-de-sac site nestled between towering rock cliffs. The centre's understated form defers to the surrounding scenery, with a monolithic presence that appears carved from the stratified canyon walls. A carefully choreographed processional sequence guides visitors from the arrival deck through compressed prismatic vestibules into an open courtyard oriented 45 degrees from the main axis. This rotation creates intimate spaces that frame diagonal views of the sublime desert panorama. While the angled courtyard establishes a sense of enclosure, cut-outs and a circular oculus intentionally reveal glimpses of the sky and craggy landscape beyond. The thoughtful journey culminates on the West side with an uninterrupted vista across the desert floor through a mirrored vestibule that expands the sense of depth. KWY.studio 's refined design deftly balances exposure to and protection from AlUla's extremes. The Desert X AlUla 2024 Visitor Centre offers a tranquil spatial experience that elevates an appreciation for the region's dramatic natural environment through a nuanced interplay of solid, void, light and shadow. Design Team - Founded in 2009 in Berlin and Los Angeles, KWY.studio is a multidisciplinary platform that investigates the nature of collaboration through specific projects. Led by principal Ricardo Gomes, the firm takes a process-oriented approach, beginning each commission with in-depth dialogue and analysis among invited specialists from diverse creative fields. KWY.studio 's projects emerge from the synthesis of diverse perspectives, with recent collaborators ranging from artists, writers, and curators to educators, designers, and fellow architects. The firm's portfolio demonstrates a keen ability to imbue projects with conceptual narratives that respond to the unique contextual Parameters of each site and program. KWY.studio 's designs deftly negotiate complexities with refined, meticulously detailed expressions that elevate the sensory experience of architecture. With a talented staff including Luise Marter and Rui Neto, among others, KWY.studio exemplifies an accurate, professional approach that pushes the boundaries of what architecture can be through interdisciplinary exploration and seamless collaboration. Their work positions the practice at the vanguard of contemporary architectural design. Previous Next
- Populus 酒店 Studio Gang | Archicasting
Project Name: Populus Hotel Location: Denver, Colorado, United States Design Team: Studio Gang Client: Urban Villages Size: 135,000 sf / 13 stories, 265 hotel rooms Status: Completed 2024 Photographs: Steve Hall, Jason O'Rear Feature: Project - Populus, a pioneering carbon-positive hotel designed by Studio Gang, establishes itself as a transformative architectural presence in downtown Denver. The 135,000-square-foot development, encompassing 265 hotel rooms across 13 stories, revolutionizes a prominent triangular site with a design that responds equally to all three street frontages, effectively connecting Denver's civic, arts, and commercial districts. The building's most distinctive feature is its biomorphic façade, inspired by the growth patterns of Colorado's native aspen trees (Populus tremuloides). The vertical scallops, each corresponding to a guest room's width, feature eye-shaped windows that echo the characteristic scarring patterns found on aspen bark. These windows are masterfully engineered with extended "lids" that provide shade and manage rainwater runoff, while their varying sizes respond to the different spatial requirements of public and private areas - from dramatic 30-foot-high ground-floor portals to more intimate guest room apertures. The project's environmental credentials are particularly groundbreaking. As the United States' first carbon-positive hotel, it achieves this through multiple strategies: a concrete structure incorporating fly ash to minimize cement content, the pioneering elimination of dedicated parking levels (a first for downtown Denver), and an ambitious reforestation program involving over 70,000 Engelmann Spruce trees. The building's green roof, planted with regional vegetation, creates a habitat for local wildlife and insects, while the accessible rooftop terrace offers panoramic views of the State Capitol, Civic Center Park, and the Rocky Mountains. The interior program, developed in collaboration with Wildman Chalmers Design and Fowler Architecture & Interior Design, creates a dynamic social hub through its ground-floor activation. Public spaces include a restaurant and coffee shop, while hotel rooms feature occupiable windows that transform into seating areas, bringing guests closer to the outdoor environment. Through this thoughtful integration of social spaces, sustainable strategies, and biophilic design, Populus demonstrates how architecture can simultaneously serve urban vitality, environmental stewardship, and human experience. Design Team - Studio Gang, established in 1997 by visionary architect Jeanne Gang, has evolved into a globally influential architecture and urban design practice with strategic presence in Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, and Paris. The firm's distinctive methodology integrates rigorous research, material innovation, and ecological awareness, consistently pushing the boundaries of sustainable architecture and social impact. Under Gang's leadership, the practice has developed a remarkable portfolio that demonstrates their commitment to connecting people with their environment through thoughtful design interventions. The firm's approach is characterized by its deep engagement with ecological systems and innovative material applications, as evidenced in projects like the Populus Hotel and the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation at the American Museum of Natural History. Their work extends beyond traditional architectural services to encompass research initiatives and public advocacy, particularly in areas of environmental stewardship and social equity. The practice's integrated approach to sustainability and community engagement has earned them numerous accolades, including the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture and TIME magazine's recognition of Jeanne Gang as one of the most influential people in the world. Currently led by Gang alongside key partners, the firm maintains a collaborative studio culture that emphasizes knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary innovation. Their commitment to environmental responsibility is reflected not only in their designs but also in their operational practices, including initiatives to close the gender wage gap and promote diversity in architectural practice. Studio Gang's portfolio spans cultural centers, educational facilities, urban residential developments, and civic spaces, each demonstrating their ability to create architecture that responds to local contexts while addressing global challenges. Their work consistently demonstrates how architectural innovation can drive positive social and environmental change, establishing them as pioneers in the field of environmentally conscious and socially responsible architecture. 2024 Previous Next
- Blue Bottle Coffee Toyosu Park Cafe Schemata Architects | Archicasting
Project Name: Blue Bottle Coffee Toyosu Park Cafe Location: Tokyo, Japan Design Team: Schemata Architects Size: 279.37 m² Completion Date: August 2024 Photographer: Takumi Ota Feature: Project - Nestled along the waterfront of Tokyo Bay, Blue Bottle Coffee's latest cafe reimagines the relationship between architecture, public space, and urban landscape. Designed by Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, the Toyosu Park Cafe breaks down traditional boundaries between interior and exterior, creating a fluid spatial experience that seamlessly integrates with its surrounding park environment. The 300-square-meter structure challenges conventional cafe design through its innovative approach to scale and connectivity. Rather than imposing a singular, monolithic volume, the architects have composed the cafe as a cluster of human-scaled "huts" that nestle gently into the open park landscape. This deliberate fragmentation allows the building to feel both intimate and expansive, blurring the lines between built form and public space. A key design strategy lies in the gradational approach to spatial experience. The architects have transformed the entire park into a potential cafe environment, with carefully designed transitional spaces that flow between outdoor, semi-outdoor, and indoor zones. Extensive use of glass and FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) creates a translucent envelope that allows uninterrupted views of Tokyo Bay while bathing the interior in soft, diffused light. The interior is equally thoughtful, with varying ceiling heights creating distinct zones that support different social interactions. The high-ceilinged Cafe 2 features community tables that encourage social engagement, while the lower-ceilinged Cafe 1 offers more intimate seating with panoramic views of the park and sea. Materiality plays a crucial role in the design, with bricks extending both inside and outside to eliminate spatial boundaries. Cantilevered FRP tables connected to structural columns further blur the distinction between architecture and furniture, creating a holistic design approach that celebrates connection and fluidity. Design Team - Schemata Architects, established in 1998 by visionary architect Jo Nagasaka, has emerged as one of Japan's most innovative architectural practices, consistently pushing the boundaries of spatial design through a distinctive methodology that bridges conceptual thinking with hands-on materiality. Founded upon graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts, Nagasaka's studio has evolved into a multidisciplinary powerhouse, orchestrating projects across architectural, interior, and furniture design. The practice, headquartered in Tokyo's Sendagaya district, operates under a philosophy that emphasizes 1:1 scale thinking—an approach that treats every project, regardless of scale, with the same rigorous attention to detail and spatial relationship. Under Nagasaka's leadership, the firm has garnered international recognition for its adaptive reuse projects and retail environments, notably the globally acclaimed Blue Bottle Coffee outlets and the innovative DESCENTE BLANC retail concept. The practice's portfolio demonstrates exceptional versatility, from private residences like the minimalist Sayama Flat to institutional projects such as the Musashino Art University Building No.16. Schemata's work is characterized by its material honesty, spatial fluidity, and innovative programming solutions. The firm's methodology often involves experimental material applications and creative space-planning strategies, resulting in environments that challenge conventional architectural paradigms while maintaining functional integrity. This approach has earned them numerous commissions for cultural institutions, retail brands, and private clients worldwide, establishing Schemata as a leading voice in contemporary architectural discourse. 2024 Previous Next

Project Name: Folly at Fair Hill Location: Asker, Norway Design Team: Rever & Drage Architects Total Floor Area: 30 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Tom Auger Design Features: Project - Located in Asker, Norway, the Folly at Fair Hill designed by Rever & Drage Architects represents a revolutionary breakthrough in decorative architecture design, challenging conventional garden building stereotypes through its poetic spatial narratives and sophisticated functional programming integration. This 30-square-meter facility completed in 2025 transforms the typical ornamental structure into what the architects describe as "an architectural statement that transcends conventional garden structures" --- a functional space where practical utility replaces pure decorative purpose, embodying the design philosophy that "follies should possess both aesthetic value and serve genuine practical functions." The building's most striking feature is its audacious dual-volume composition, where the primary structure contrasts with a dramatically leaning annex that appears to grow gracefully from beneath the shelter of a magnificent oak tree. These fluid forms create a deliberate harmony with the building's carefully orchestrated interior functional layout, establishing what the designers call "a perfect fusion of childhood memories with adult practicality" that effectively eliminates the functional deficiency and spatial waste typically associated with decorative architecture. Rather than simply occupying the site, the architecture emerges as a transitional threshold that marks the journey from domestic bustle to pastoral tranquility, defying simple categorization as traditional garden decoration. The folly's spatial organization demonstrates sophisticated understanding of spatial psychology, particularly in creating environments that facilitate transition from busy life to peaceful retreat. Following principles that combine landscape architecture with functional building design, the structure ensures visitors experience gradual emotional and psychological transformation as they traverse from east to west through thoughtful volume separation and material contrasts. The leaning lounge with its glass roof and the kitchen that opens completely to the garden extend the healing environment outdoors, providing users with direct contact with nature --- elements that hold significant therapeutic value for physical and mental relaxation. The architectural language skillfully merges elegant oak cladding with robust pine log construction, achieving balance between practicality and aesthetic depth. Interior spaces are carefully planned with full consideration of different functional zones' psychological needs, ensuring the dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and lounge all provide comfortable and relaxing experiences for users. This project represents an important component of Norway's "landscape-functional architecture integration" movement, demonstrating the country's efforts to balance traditional timber construction techniques with contemporary spatial design concepts. Design Team - Rever & Drage Architects is an architectural practice based in Oslo and Flekkefjord, founded in recent years by three accomplished architects: Eirik Lilledrange, Martin Beverfjord, and Tom Auger.
Feature: Project - Japanese architecture firm monotrum has breathed new life into a pioneering 1960s residence by transforming it into a distinctive boutique hotel. The Corrugated House cleverly adapts the experimental corrugated pipe structure, originally designed by Kenji Kawai as his own home and recognized by DOCOMOMO for its Modernist significance. Rather than preserving it as a static museum piece, monotrum's renovation allows visitors to intimately experience the iconic architecture through an overnight stay. The building's original tunnel-like space made of exposed corrugated steel pipes has been thoughtfully reimagined with new partitions to carve out guest rooms and amenities. Newly constructed dark wood-paneled walls provide a warm contrast against the industrial rawness of the structure. Furniture pieces like beds, desktops and air conditioning covers were crafted from matching timber tones to harmonize the interiors. An ingenious movable shelving and lighting system was custom fabricated to integrate with the existing pipe framework. A standout feature is the revitalized oval skylight on the south facade. Originally sealed due to excessive brightness, the aperture now houses a honeycomb-patterned light installation visible from the guest quarters through polycarbonate wall panels. By thoughtfully layering new functional insertions onto the vintage bones, monotrum has transformed the Corrugated House into an immersive hospitality experience. The adaptive reuse project poetically preserves the architectural spirit while introducing contemporary comforts. Design Team - Established in 2018, monotrum is an emerging Japanese practice spearheaded by principals Nobuhiko Kitazato and Takuya Ishii. With multi-disciplinary backgrounds encompassing architecture, urban planning and industrial design, the duo brings a diversified creative lens to their work. Meanwhile, Ishii honed his skills at Tetsuo Kawabe Architectural City Planning Office and ETLA inc. following his studies at Aoyama Technical College and Kyoto University of Art and Design. This cross-pollination of influences manifests in monotrum's innovative approach that deftly straddles conceptual vigor and technical precision. The firm's portfolio showcases an adroit handling of materials, spatial strategies and contextual responsiveness across residential, commercial and hospitality typologies. With studios in Osaka and Tokyo, monotrum exemplifies a new generation of design thinkers adept at uncovering the extraordinary potential latent within ordinary circumstances. Their work elicits fresh perspectives while remaining firmly rooted in pragmatism and functionality. Previous Next

Møller Architects Collaborators: Burckhardt Architektur AG Landscape Design: Uniola AG Engineering: PZM AG (MEP) Contractor: Allrea Project Area: 27,000㎡ Completion: 2024 Photography: Mark Hadden, Peter Sikker Rasmussen Sustainability Certification: LEED Platinum, Swiss Minergie Certification Feature: Project - Danish architecture studio C.F. Møller has transformed a 1970s office building on the shores of Lake Zürich into a contemporary workplace that seamlessly integrates sustainable technology with social spaces, earning prestigious LEED Platinum certification. The renovation of Bellerivestrasse 36 maintains the building's architectural heritage while introducing innovative solutions for energy efficiency. Most notably, the architects developed a distinctive facade system that incorporates horizontal photovoltaic panels, which serve the dual purpose of generating clean energy and providing solar shading. These panels are cleverly concealed behind color-treated glass that matches the metal cladding, creating a cohesive aesthetic that modernizes the building's appearance. At the heart of the 27,000-square-metre structure, a new atrium forms the social core of the building, fostering interaction between different departments and flooding the interior with natural light. This intervention transforms what was once a closed-off office environment into a dynamic, collaborative workspace that prioritizes user well-being. The project's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its energy-efficient systems. The architects have reimagined the existing stone terraces as green spaces that integrate seamlessly with the surrounding park. These areas not only provide pleasant outdoor spaces for employees but also contribute to rainwater management and local biodiversity. Interior spaces feature natural materials, with wood prominently used in lift cores and flooring, creating warm and inviting environments that contrast with the building's technical exterior. This materiality, combined with the abundance of natural light and views of Lake Zürich, establishes a strong connection between the indoor and outdoor environments.
Project Name: Mumo Museum of Motorcycles Location: Puerto Octay , Chile Design Team: DRAA Total Floor Area: 1200 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Marcos Zegers Feature: Project - DRAA reimagined cultural exhibition space in southern Chile, creating the Mumo Museum of Motorcycles——a masterpiece practice in timber construction that transforms traditional craftsmanship into contemporary structural innovation. Located in Puerto Octay and completed in 2024, this 1200-square-meter project directly addresses the challenge of housing the country's largest collection of pre-corporate era vintage motorcycles while responding to the romantic cultural context along the Pan-American Highway. The project's genius lies in rejecting the enclosed forms of traditional museums, instead adopting a strategy of three staggered wooden pavilions. Lead architects Nicolás del Río and Felipe Camus chose not to fight against the site's slope, but carefully orchestrated exhibition spaces elevated on stepped concrete plinths that serve as both independent narrative units and continuous circulation flows. This creates what the architects describe as "segmented yet undivided exhibition halls"——allowing visitors to experience necessary narrative pauses within a continuous spatial experience. The design directly responds to the client's request for architecture rooted in local tradition, inheriting the legacy of German colonization in southern Chile from the mid-19th century. These historical elements are reinterpreted through contemporary timber construction techniques, most notably CNC-machined laminated pino insigne components that employ woven wooden beam systems to transform each roof plane into rigid diaphragms. These structural elements connect through steel rings disguised as skylights, creating structural poetry that bridges interior and exterior spaces. The Mumo Museum's spatial strategy transforms traditional exhibition typologies into more flexible forms. Multiple pavilions——from ground-level service spaces to elevated exhibition halls——capture spectacular views of Lake Llanquihue and Osorno Volcano while creating what the architects call "column-free exhibition spaces" that allow hundreds of motorcycles to be displayed freely. This structural innovation amplifies display possibilities beyond traditional museum constraints. The result is architecture as technological heritage——every construction detail reveals the technological distance between the original German settlers and contemporary Chilean society. Thermally treated pino insigne exterior cladding becomes the primary material expression, transitioning from natural wood tones through weathering processes to silver-gray surfaces, creating what the architects describe as "wooden buildings clad in wood"——a pure construction logic that maps the temporal layers of regional architectural culture. Design Team - Founded in 2012 by architect Nicolás del Río López in Santiago, Chile, DRAA has emerged as a pioneering force in contemporary Latin American architectural practice, consistently bridging rigorous design methodology with material innovation technologies. With offices in Santiago and Frutillar, the firm has established itself as a comprehensive architectural consultancy providing professional design services across diverse building typologies throughout Chile and the broader Latin American region. Del Río López, a graduate of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (2001) with a Master's degree from Oxford Brookes University (2011), co-leads the practice with director Felipe Camus Dávila (PUC 2007), bringing international academic background to their work. The DRAA name reflects Del Río Arquitectos Asociados' foundational philosophy of achieving design excellence through collaboration——a principle that manifests throughout their comprehensive project methodology. The firm's design philosophy centers on thorough investigation of diverse building typologies, with particular emphasis on the outcomes of tectonic expression and structural innovation. This approach synthesizes proportional analysis, tectonics and structure, and responsible crossover with materials and energy efficiency, yielding significant works from timber museums to residential projects that demonstrate continuous advancement of contemporary architectural technical boundaries. DRAA's mastery of CNC-manufactured timber construction technologies and engineered connection systems, along with applications of advanced construction techniques such as Rothoblaas engineered screws, underscores their contribution to Chile's evolving architectural discourse, positioning them as thought leaders in contemporary material innovation practice——honoring regional construction traditions while embracing progressive technological methodologies. 2024 Previous Next
IMPLMNT architects | Archicasting
Project Name: Stasys Museum Location: Panevėžys, Lithuania Architecture Studio: IMPLMNT architects Area: 4,130 m² Completion Year: 2023 Photographer: Norbert Tukaj Feature: Project - Lithuanian architecture studio IMPLMNT architects has completed the Stasys Museum in Panevėžys, featuring textured concrete facades and metaphorical spatial elements that pay homage to the surrealist works of artist Stasys Eidrigevičius. Located in the northern part of Panevėžys' city center, the 4,130-square-metre cultural institution serves as both a museum and a vital public space, incorporating exhibition halls, educational facilities, and a non-commercial cinema that preserves the site's historical connection to film screening. The museum's design language is rooted in three key principles derived from Eidrigevičius himself: simplicity, logic, and fantasy. IMPLMNT architects translated these concepts into architectural elements by studying the artist's distinctive work, particularly focusing on his use of continuous lines and the transformative interaction between objects. "We encoded the 'touch of Stasys Eidrigevičius' throughout the building," explained the studio, which manifested this approach through the structure's exterior and interior design elements. The building's facade is characterized by its restrained materiality, combining two types of textured concrete – featuring dotted and linear patterns – with glazed facade systems. This architectural treatment creates a subtle interplay of textures that shifts with changing light conditions. The project's urban integration is particularly noteworthy, as it establishes a strategic connection between Krantas and Respublika streets while linking western attraction centers to the Oxbow Lake. The surrounding public space is thoughtfully divided into two distinct zones: an active leisure area to the north and a creative urban space to the south, complete with outdoor exhibition areas, a café, and versatile event spaces for cinema screenings, concerts, and street art performances. Inside, the museum spans multiple levels, with exhibition spaces spread across two floors, a dedicated floor for education and administration, and a small hall that will eventually be transformed into a media-focused exhibition space in the project's second phase. Design Team - Founded in 2016 in Vilnius, Lithuania, IMPLMNT architects has rapidly emerged as one of the Baltic region's most innovative architectural practices, demonstrating exceptional prowess in cultural and public architecture. The boutique studio, while maintaining an intentionally compact team of 2-10 professionals, has established itself through its methodological approach to contextual design and programmatic innovation. Their recent completion of the Stasys Museum (2023) in Panevėžys exemplifies the firm's capability to deliver sophisticated cultural infrastructure. The 4,130-square-meter project showcases their signature approach to architectural narratives, where materiality and spatial programming converge to create meaningful civic spaces. Operating from their headquarters in Vilnius, IMPLMNT's practice philosophy centers on the careful integration of architecture within its urban and cultural context. The firm specializes in translating complex programmatic requirements into coherent architectural solutions, particularly evident in their public and cultural projects. Under the current leadership, the studio maintains a selective portfolio approach, ensuring each project receives intensive attention to detail and conceptual rigor. Situated at the intersection of Sumang Walk near the Punggol waterway, the centre aspires to be an "oasis of happiness" that embraces principles of peace, culture and education. The architects conceived the 3,200 square metre building as a solid masonry form punctured by a series of courtyard spaces that allow nature to permeate the interior. These landscaped voids create a variety of environments for discourse, relaxation and engagement with the outdoors. The courtyards provide moments of tranquility where one can observe and commune with nature - inspiring self-reflection and inner transformation. Despite its robust, fort-like appearance, the porous design establishes a sense of openness. Formwerkz describes it as bearing "fortitude to safeguard the good foundation" while remaining inclusive and protective. The interspersed green spaces offer pockets for both group activities and private contemplation amidst verdant surroundings. Embodying dignified hospitality, the Punggol Soka Centre presents an urban citadel reimagined - its bold massing contrasted by pockets of naturalistic sanctuary that cultivate engagement, wellbeing and happiness. The unique concept hybridizes notions of fortification and porosity into an innovative community hub.
2023 Previous Next
TAAL Architects | Archicasting
Project Name: MUSIMJAE Location: Gongju, South Korea Design Team: TAAL Architects Area: 187 m² Completion Year: 2022 Photography: Kim Yongsu Feature: Project - South Korean architecture studio TAAL Architects has completed MUSIMJAE, a contemplative residence nestled in the foothills of Mount Gyeryong that embraces Buddhist principles of mindfulness through architectural design. The 187-square-metre home, whose name translates to "a place of undiscriminating mind," responds to its spectacular natural setting while embodying the Buddhist concept of "MuBunByulSim" – a state of mind free from discrimination and delusion. "The challenge was translating this philosophical concept into architectural language," explained lead architect Zo Hangman. "We concluded that the house should serve as a threshold where the owner can shed worldly distractions upon entering." The studio's response manifests in a carefully orchestrated sequence of spaces that frame views of Mount Gyeryong's ridgeline through strategically placed floor-to-ceiling windows. In the second-floor living room, angled walls dramatize these vistas, while transparent balustrades ensure unobstructed sight lines to the landscape. TAAL Architects employed subtle yet sophisticated design moves throughout the modest structure. Bedrooms feature windows aligned with bed height to create intimate connections with the surrounding forest and sky, while a loft skylight opens to the night sky. The stairwell offers progressive reveals of Sammubbong, the mountain's highest peak, as residents ascend. Drawing inspiration from historian Kim Busik's description of Baekje palaces as "modest but not shabby, elegant but not luxurious," the architects pursued refined simplicity in both form and material. The home's compact footprint and gabled roof profile belie its sophisticated internal volumes, created through a careful response to the site's topography. Despite its limited size, MUSIMJAE achieves spatial richness through varying ceiling heights and thoughtfully framed perspectives. The architects' restraint in material selection and detailing results in what they describe as "subtle dignity" – a space that contains exactly what is necessary, nothing more and nothing less. The project demonstrates how contemporary architecture can engage with traditional philosophical principles while creating spaces that respond sensitively to both site and client needs. Design Team - TAAL Architects, established in New York in the late 2000s before relocating to Seoul in 2013, has emerged as one of South Korea's most thoughtful architectural practices, known for their phenomenological approach to space-making and contextual sensitivity. The firm was co-founded by Zo Hangman and Seo Jiyoung, both alumni of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). Under the current leadership of Principal Seo Jiyoung, LEED AP, and Founding Partner Zo Hangman, who also serves as a Professor at Seoul National University, the practice has cultivated a distinctive design methodology that synthesizes vernacular wisdom with contemporary architectural discourse. Their integrated service model encompasses master planning, architectural design, interior architecture, and environmental consulting. The firm's portfolio demonstrates a rigorous commitment to tectonics and materiality, exemplified in projects like MUSIMJAE residence (2022), where Buddhist philosophy is translated into architectural form through careful consideration of spatial sequences and phenomenological experiences. Their work has garnered significant recognition, including the 2010 WAN Award, AIANY Design Awards (2009, 2010), and the Kim Swoogeun Preview Award (2016). Operating from their Seoul headquarters, TAAL Architects continues to push the boundaries of architectural practice through their research-driven approach and commitment to sustainable design solutions. 2022 Previous Next

NatureHumaine | Archicasting
Nestled in the heart of Sainte-Béatrix, Quebec, La Cime stands as a testament to innovative micro-chalet design, seamlessly blending architectural ingenuity with environmental consciousness. This compact 498 sq ft marvel, perched atop galvanized steel piles, offers an unparalleled treetop experience while minimizing its ecological footprint. The project's most striking feature is its thoughtful elevation, suspending the living spaces 12 feet above the ground. This ingenious design preserves the natural terrain and creates a mesmerizing floating sensation, immersing occupants in the surrounding canopy. The chalet's split-level layout cleverly maximizes space, with private areas below and communal spaces above, each carefully oriented to frame breathtaking views of the De la Boule River and dense forest beyond. La Cime's commitment to sustainability is evident in its LEED GOLD certification and adherence to novoclimat standards. Pre-aged western pine cladding unifies the structure's exterior, while the interior showcases a harmonious palette of white pine, polished concrete, and woven rope elements. Perhaps most intriguing is the chalet's tripartite composition: the main living volume, a suspended terrace with a circular hot bath, and a separate sauna, all interconnected by a sheltered walkway. This unique configuration and the openwork wooden slat shutter create a spa-like retreat that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor experiences. La Cime redefines micro-living, proving that limited square footage need not compromise luxury, sustainability, or connection to nature. Founded in 2004, NatureHumaine is a Montreal-based architectural practice that has rapidly established itself as a beacon of innovative design in Quebec's architectural landscape. Tomecek Studio Architecture | Archicasting
该事务所经验丰富的专业团队:包括创始人兼首席建筑师Brad Tomecek(持有佛罗里达大学设计学士和建筑学硕士学位)、项目经理Alexander Bender(持有科罗拉多大学丹佛分校理学学士和建筑学硕士学位,专注于空间感知和人与自然环境关系研究)、首席财务官Christa Offenhauser Tomecek(范德堡大学数学与法语双学位)—— 汇集了涵盖住宅、机构和商业项目的集体专业知识。 2023 Previous Next
