  • Funky Ramen餐厅 Kidz Studio | Archicasting

Project Name: Funky Ramen Restaurant Location: Düsseldorf, Germany Design Team: Kidz Studio Total Floor Area: 220 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Ruben Movsisian Feature: Project - Funky Ramen is a unique restaurant located in Düsseldorf, born from the vision of an experienced sushi chef who has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants. After building expertise through his own sushi delivery business, he with his business partner decided to take their passion to the next level. In collaboration with Kidz Studio, they transformed a 200-square-meter space into an exceptional dining destination inspired by the anime Samurai Champloo. This anime, which blends Edo-period traditions with street culture elements like graffiti and hip-hop, served as the foundation for the restaurant's aesthetic and conceptual design. The restaurant's interior reflects the personalities of the anime's three main characters: Jin, a calm and wise samurai; Mugen, an impulsive and free-spirited samurai; and Fuu, the determined young woman who unites them. These traits are represented in three distinct zones. The blue zone, inspired by Jin, exudes calmness and sophistication with its sturdy wooden tables and exposed brick walls, creating an atmosphere perfect for savoring sushi. The red zone, embodying Mugen's energy, features raw and handcrafted materials like concrete blocks, stone, and hand-painted red cushions, fostering a casual, dynamic space for enjoying ramen. The neutral zone, representing Fuu, is simple and welcoming, with white walls, linen curtains, and minimalistic seating for relaxed, everyday dining. The design embraces imperfection and authenticity, reflecting the restaurant's "funky" ethos. During the renovation, historical architectural elements were preserved, such as exposed brick walls with partially removed plaster and uneven textures, adding character and a sense of timelessness. Linen screens in the dining area display projections of scenes from Samurai Champloo, immersing guests in the concept. Lighting is carefully tailored to enhance each zone's ambiance, with features like a sunset effect created with spotlights and iridescent film in the red zone. The layout fosters interaction and transparency. A large opening connects the ramen kitchen to the main dining area, allowing guests to observe the preparation process. In the staircase area, a custom-shaped window offers a view of the sushi station, framed with red acrylic to add drama and emphasize the craftsmanship of the chefs. The staircase also leads to the restrooms, integrating functionality with thematic design. Symbolism is woven throughout the space to highlight the relationship between the two samurai, Jin and Mugen. Red lines run through the blue zone, and blue ropes connect seating in the red zone, representing unity and mutual influence. Every detail reinforces the narrative of blending differences to create harmony. Funky Ramen combines historical charm, modern aesthetics, and thematic storytelling to offer a dining experience that is both visually and emotionally engaging. It blends tradition, innovation, and the beauty of imperfection, making it a standout destination in Düsseldorf's culinary scene. Design Team - Kidz Studio is a forward-thinking architectural and design practice founded in 2013 that approaches the built environment with a distinctive "kid-vision" philosophy. This international firm specializes in creating contextually responsive designs that seamlessly blend functional innovation with emotional resonance across diverse cultural landscapes. Their multidisciplinary approach allows them to craft comprehensive spatial experiences that transcend conventional design boundaries while remaining attuned to local sensibilities. Under the leadership of their design team, Kidz Studio has built a portfolio characterized by experimentation and meaningful placemaking. Their recent project, Funky Ramen Restaurant in Düsseldorf, exemplifies their ability to translate conceptual narratives into cohesive architectural language—thoughtfully dividing the 220-square-meter space into character-inspired zones that honor both Japanese culinary traditions and contemporary cultural references. The studio's commitment to creating "emotionally charged spaces that inspire interaction" is evident in their careful attention to materiality, preservation of existing architectural elements, and strategic implementation of lighting to enhance spatial perception. With a collaborative workforce of 11-50 professionals operating in a hybrid work environment, Kidz Studio continues to pursue projects that unite people through thoughtful design interventions across public and commercial typologies worldwide. 2025 Previous Next

  • DoubleMint 住宅 large [medium] design office | Archicasting

Project:DoubleMint House Team:large [medium] design office Size:215 m² Location:Toronto, Canada Feature: Project - In the heart of Toronto, a three-story Edwardian semi-detached home has been transformed into a masterpiece of contemporary design while respecting its historical roots. The doubleMint House, a project by [architect's name], seamlessly integrates a two-storey rear addition with the existing structure, creating a living space that is both functional and aesthetically striking. The addition's focal point is the ingenious design of two nearly identical bedrooms on the second floor, cleverly tailored for twin brothers. These rooms, while mirroring each other in proportion and window placement, offer subtle individuality through uniquely sculpted ceilings and varying shades of blue paint. This thoughtful approach extends to a narrow double-height space at the end of the bedrooms, adding an element of architectural intrigue. Perhaps the most unexpected feature is the third-storey walkout roof deck, an urban oasis that compensates for the ground-level green space sacrificed to the extension. This private retreat, enveloped by a thick guard rail that doubles as a privacy screen, has become a cherished spot for the homeowners to unwind and entertain. The ground floor expansion aligns perfectly with the attached dwelling, housing an expansive dining and living area. A clever interplay of materials – including a western millwork piece showcasing books and vinyl, and an eastern composition of white oak panels and blackened steel – creates a seamless transition between old and new. The space is bathed in soft, indirect light from the north-facing window wall, which also facilitates natural ventilation. DoubleMint House stands as a testament to innovative spatial design, where every element serves a dual purpose. From the light-channeling skylight to the multifunctional thick guard rail, this renovation proves that with creative thinking, even the most challenging spaces can be transformed into something extraordinary.

Feature: Project - Nestled in a quiet residential corner of Nishikami Central New Town in Kobe's Nishi Ward, this renovation project transforms a long-empty family home into a contemporary living space imbued with personal memories. The surrounding neighborhood retains a pastoral charm despite being a fully developed area, with a park to the north and houses on large plots lining the other sides. The clients, a couple with strong ties to old family homes, sought to reimagine the cramped, fragmented layout of this childhood house into an airy, connected whole - focusing changes inside rather than altering the distinctive green exterior, which holds nostalgic significance. Ten complimentary goals emerge: honoring past and present through conservation and reuse; creating an abstract, cave-like interior; allowing materials to fluidly transition inside and out; accommodating future generations; and more. To manifest this vision, the raw yet highly functional stone from Towada island, typically used in baths, defines the spaces. Smaller wall panels retain the stone's quarry-like texture, while larger floor plates provide contrast through their expansive smoothness. The new central cavity seems carved out from inside and out, its terrazzo flooring and textured walls fading seamlessly into the re-landscaped garden via a new engawa porch. Though untouched this round, the aging roof and exterior gain new potential as canvases for future generations to add their own imprints to this generational home. Design Team - Through a process of “architecturalizing” the essence of each project, YYA aims to create unique and meaningful buildings that satisfy stakeholders ranging from clients to end users to society at large. Founded in 2021 and led by principal architect Yusuke Yoshino, YYA inheres a human-centric ethos to its diverse portfolio from private residences to public projects. Rather than imposing a signature style, the firm seeks out and elevates the core of each assignment, whether a long-held memory or an emerging need. The resulting dialogues between past and present, concrete and abstract, individual and collective reveal spaces where people truly want to be. With its thoughtful approach and several awards already accrued, YYA promises to shape architecture that equally anchors its surroundings and propels them towards a better future. 2023 Previous Next

  • Hee别墅 Studio Ellsinger | Archicasting

Project Name: Hee House Location: Hee, Sweden Design Team: Studio Ellsinger Total Floor Area: 506 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Christopher Hunt Feature: Swedish architecture studio Studio Ellsinger completed the Hee House project in Hee, just south of Hamburgsund on the Swedish West Coast, creating a compact vacation home that ingeniously transforms a modest cubic form into an expansive living experience. The project is positioned within a naturally rich landscape of pines, rocks, and meadow grass, drawing inspiration from Sweden's harsh climate conditions to create an architectural work that both celebrates Scandinavian building traditions and embodies contemporary design innovation. The project's most compelling design feature lies in its sophisticated response to a challenging 7x7-meter compact footprint—the architects masterfully handled the spatial constraints by extending vertically to 7 meters height, creating dramatic vertical space. Rather than choosing horizontal expansion, the architecture embraces vertical potential, creating a building that layers upward with the height, generating two staggered levels that each provide unique spatial experiences while maintaining seamless connection through a massive room-width bookshelf system. The building's form strategically opens toward the south and east, optimizing exposure to natural daylight and maximizing views of the surrounding forest and fields. This thoughtful orientation ensures that the house maintains an intimate connection to the landscape while closing off to the north to avoid disturbance from neighbors and road. The building facade showcases untreated aluminum sheeting, providing superior wind and rain protection from a functional perspective while possessing modern industrial aesthetic significance. Material selection demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to place and climate. The steep aluminum roof, custom-designed panels and windows, and locally sourced laminated timber create a tactile dialogue that maps the resilient qualities of the surrounding natural environment. The horizontal timber framework provides necessary structural support while allowing for maximized interior spatial experience, eliminating visual interference from traditional supporting beams and columns. The project culminates in the multifunctional bookshelf design, which simultaneously serves as structural support, storage solution, spatial divider, and fireplace installation, even accommodating kitchen storage functions. The loft space provides a children's lounge area, two sleeping bunks, a sofa bed, and workspace, which can be screened off with a 4-meter-high curtain for privacy. This innovative design exemplifies how contemporary architecture can maximize spatial efficiency while providing modern living service experiences, creating a feeling that is both compact and spacious. Design Team - Studio Ellsinger stands as a distinguished Swedish architectural practice that has established an exceptional reputation in innovative Scandinavian design. Founded by Mikael and Fanny Ellsinger in 2010 and based in Västra Frölunda, Sweden, under the creative direction of design principal Mikael Ellsinger, the firm has developed a reputation for creating innovative solutions across residential, vacation architecture, and custom design typologies. Mikael Ellsinger brings exceptional architectural experience and deep understanding of Scandinavian building traditions to the practice. Under the leadership of founding partners Mikael and Fanny Ellsinger, supported by an expanding team including Ragnar Ellsinger and Ebba Palmqvist, the practice has garnered recognition for its meticulous attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship. This combination of local expertise with contemporary design innovation positions Studio Ellsinger uniquely within Sweden's architectural landscape. The firm's design philosophy emphasizes that site-specific solutions are as important as architectural execution, not rushing to standardized architectural solutions but believing that architecture should be a result of thorough understanding of environmental conditions, cultural contexts, and programmatic requirements. Through dialogue with clients, they formulate the main ingredients for the project then offer their expertise to transform ideas into reality. Studio Ellsinger believes that exceptional ideas come from collaboration with specialized consultants and artisans, they love to challenge themselves and push the design boundary further, with innovation being the key to keeping their business running. Through this thoughtful synthesis of local material usage, understanding of traditional spatial logic, and contemporary architectural language, Studio Ellsinger has established itself as a significant contributor to Sweden's contemporary architectural discourse, creating architectural works that are both rooted in place and embrace global design vision. 2024 Previous Next

  • BIRKENSTOCK 京都店 TORAFU ARCHITECTS | Archicasting

Project Name: BIRKENSTOCK KYOTO Location: Kawaramachi, Kyoto, Japan Design Team: TORAFU ARCHITECTS Total Floor Area: 98.18 m² Completion: March 2025 Photography: DAICI ANO Feature: Project - BIRKENSTOCK KYOTO is a thoughtfully designed pop-up store for German footwear brand BIRKENSTOCK in Kyoto, Japan, creating a space that masterfully balances historical context with contemporary retail experience. Located on the bustling Shijo Street in Kyoto's Kawaramachi district, the temporary one-year installation occupies a traditional machiya townhouse with the characteristic "unagi no nedoko" (eel's bed) layout—narrow at just 3.8 meters wide but extending 24 meters deep. This challenging footprint has been transformed into a spatial journey that honors both BIRKENSTOCK's 251-year heritage and Kyoto's cultural significance. The entrance announces itself boldly on the busy street with a gateway-like façade featuring the brand's signature blue on both signage panels and LED neon tubing. This contemporary interpretation of a traditional Japanese "mon" (gate) creates a striking visual presence while respecting the surrounding historical streetscape. Upon entering, visitors experience an airy double-height ceiling that enhances the spatial quality of the slender site. Torafu's design brilliantly embraces the tension between old and new, with exposed structural elements contrasting against carefully placed greenery and modern neon signage. Perhaps most ingenious is the architects' treatment of the floor, where original adhesive marks from removed flooring were preserved and reimagined as a karesansui (dry landscape garden) pattern. This creative repurposing guides the placement of display islands created from minimally processed log sections that double as seating. The journey culminates in a tranquil "inner garden" space featuring virgin cork walls—a nod to BIRKENSTOCK's footbed material—and a suede-topped counter. Here, solid wood benches with slender blue legs hover above the floor, embodying the brand's commitment to craftsmanship while creating a moment of respite. Through careful material selection, thoughtful spatial sequencing, and a reverence for both tradition and innovation, Torafu Architects has created a retail environment that feels simultaneously rooted in place and forward-looking—perfectly capturing the essence of contemporary Kyoto culture. Design Team - Founded in 2004 by Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro, TORAFU ARCHITECTS has established itself as a multidisciplinary design practice whose work transcends conventional architectural boundaries. Based in Tokyo, the firm applies architectural thinking to a diverse portfolio spanning architecture, interior design, exhibition planning, product design, spatial installations, and multimedia productions. The studio's co-founders bring complementary educational backgrounds: Suzuno graduated from Tokyo University of Science and completed his master's at Yokohama National University, while Kamuro studied at Meiji University. Their professional experience with renowned practices—Suzuno with Coelacanth K&H and Kerstin Thompson Architects in Melbourne, and Kamuro with Jun Aoki & Associates—informed their distinctive design approach. TORAFU's award-winning projects include "Template in CLASKA," "NIKE 1LOVE," "Kohoku Residence," and "Air Vase"—the latter added to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' permanent collection in 2015. Their "Loom of Light" installation for Canon at Milano Salone 2011 earned the prestigious ELITA Design Award for Best Exhibition. The firm has consistently garnered international recognition, including multiple Good Design Awards, iF Design Awards, Asia Design Prize, and the Red Dot "Best of the Best" for their innovative work. Their architectural philosophy emphasizes spatial experimentation, material sensitivity, and contextual adaptation, resulting in environments that blend functionality with unexpected moments of delight. Nestled in the idyllic countryside of Shanghai's Pudong district, the Pudong Villa by Atelier Li presents a serene retreat that harmoniously blends contemporary design with traditional Chinese garden philosophy. Commissioned for two families seeking a weekend escape from urban life, the architects demolished an existing structure to erect this striking new residence. Central to the concept is the integration of nature into the living spaces, drawing inspiration from classical courtyard houses. Multiple internal courtyards and skylights filter in natural light, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor. The elongated main volume dramatically cantilevers over 21 meters towards an adjacent orchard, creating expansive sheltered zones that expand the living areas. While adhering to local rural building codes with prescribed heights and a sloping tiled roof, the bold modern form makes an architectural statement. The interior layout deftly arranges communal spaces around the courtyards, fostering interaction between family members. Open-plan living areas and a double-height living room all open onto these verdant pocket gardens. By introducing distinctly contemporary elements into the countryside setting, the Pudong Villa reimagines the typology of the Chinese rural residence for the 21st century. The innovative design reconciles urban comfort with rural tranquillity, celebrating nature while providing a peaceful oasis tailored for multi-generational living. Founded in 2018, Atelier Li is a Shanghai-based architectural practice led by principals Li Bai and Li Xuan.

Project Name: JOMOO Headquarters Location: Xiamen City, China Design Team: OMA Total Floor Area: 25,000 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Xia Zhi, Chen Hao Feature: The JOMOO Headquarters stands as a milestone achievement in corporate architecture, where OMA has created an architectural masterpiece that seamlessly bridges urban density with natural landscape on the edge of Xiamen's central business district. This project, serving as the first office campus for China's largest sanitaryware manufacturer JOMOO Group, exemplifies the architects' profound understanding and innovative reinterpretation of contemporary Chinese tower typology. The design philosophy centers on "duality" as the core guiding principle, manifesting through carefully orchestrated architectural form that achieves perfect expression. The continuous sculptural building volume integrates traditional base and tower concepts into a unified whole, creating a unique architectural language that responds to both urban high-rise density and embraces forested hills. The architects skillfully transformed contrasting environmental conditions into design advantages, creating revolutionary architectural expression that transcends conventional office typology. The space's central design element is the fluid architectural form that serves as a spatial anchor within the complex urban context, while establishing powerful architectural drama within the 25,000-square-meter scale. The facade features white ceramic stripes that cast rhythmic visual effects, not only transforming the monotonous nature of traditional office buildings but also making the architecture stand out in the urban skyline, creating a captivating visual experience. Most striking is the building's integration of public and corporate functions, whose unified programmatic framework provides diverse possibilities for spatial use. Traditional craft and high-tech production elements overlap and interweave, creating a unique atmosphere that embodies both JOMOO's brand mission and reflects Xiamen's cultural characteristics. These elements interact with carefully designed spatial sequences, generating multi-layered spatial experiences that elevate the corporate office experience far beyond conventional office buildings. The architects demonstrate exceptional attention to environmental response details, through the continuous flowing architectural form that allows employees and visitors to immediately perceive significant changes in spatial atmosphere when entering this tranquil office environment from the city's busy streets. This design approach reflects the architects' profound understanding of user experience, creating what the architects describe as "a corporate space that merges tradition with modernity, quietly amplifying the innovative power of the JOMOO brand." Design Team - OMA stands as a distinguished international architectural practice founded by Rem Koolhaas in 1975, based in Rotterdam, under the creative direction of the founder, the firm has developed a reputation for pioneering multidisciplinary practice that transcends conventional architectural boundaries. The practice operates on the foundation of "architectural thinking," applying rigorous spatial logic within the traditional boundaries of architecture and urbanism. Currently led by seven partners—Rem Koolhaas, Reinier de Graaf, Shohei Shigematsu, Iyad Alsaka, Chris van Duijn, Jason Long, and Managing Partner-Architect David Gianotten—OMA maintains offices in Rotterdam, New York, Hong Kong, and Australia. Under the leadership of founding partners, the practice has cultivated a distinctive design methodology that seamlessly integrates conceptual rigor with spatial innovation. Their portfolio encompasses landmark projects such as CCTV Headquarters in Beijing (2012), Seattle Central Library (2004), Simone Veil Bridge in Bordeaux (2024), and internationally acclaimed architectural works. The firm's experimental approach to architectural design has been exemplified through numerous award-winning projects that have received prestigious international architectural awards. The firm's design philosophy emphasizes that cross-disciplinary collaboration is as important as architectural precision, not rushing to standardized architectural solutions but believing that architecture should be a result of thorough understanding of spatial conditions, cultural contexts, and programmatic requirements. Through in-depth dialogue with clients, they formulate the core elements of the project then offer their expertise to transform creative concepts into architectural reality. OMA believes that exceptional design comes from collaboration with specialized consultants and artisans, they love to challenge themselves and push the design boundary further, with innovation being the key to maintaining their practice vitality.

Feature: Project - Nestled in the picturesque prairies of Dawei Village in Anhui Province, China, the Horizon Library by Protoscapes stands as an architectural ode to reading, storytelling, and the boundless imagination. Envisioned as a contemplative living room hovering above the landscape, this idyllic retreat beckons visitors to expand their perception of time and space amidst nature's tranquility. The library's form embodies a striking duality – a grounded, carved monolith seamlessly transitions into a hovering, transparent prism. This interplay of volumes calibrates distinct vantage points, framing the vast expanse of the surrounding fields and sky. The ground floor houses a cozy lobby café, while a carved corridor ushers guests upwards into the prismatic reading sanctuary above. Minimizing its footprint, the library's core columns cluster to liberate the perimeter, dedicating it entirely to the centerpiece reading room. Here, a panoramic veranda cantilevers 4 meters outwards, creating the illusion of levitating over the terrain. An expansive oak bookshelf winds its way around the core, ascending towards the ceiling like an ancient tree. Its illuminated branches rhythmically pair with double-glazed curtain walls, outlining intimate reading alcoves that offer distant vistas. More than a repository of books, the Horizon Library serves as a cultural nexus, poised to invigorate the region's educational tapestry while fostering a dialogue between nature's tranquility and the vibrance of communal gathering. Design Team - Founded in 2017 at MIT by principals Jinhui Huang and Pak Kin Chan, Protoscapes is a vanguard architecture and urban design practice based in Xiamen, China. The emerging studio is committed to re-envisioning the aesthetic, technical, social, and ecological possibilities of the built environment during China's next phase of urbanization. As a forward-thinking design think-tank, Protoscapes taps into the rapid urban transformations across China as a testing ground for pioneering placemaking narratives rooted in urban intensity, community empowerment, inclusive diversity, and biophilic design principles. Through close collaboration with civic and private clients, the firm challenges constraints to ensure their architectural interventions create more prospective and sustainable futures. Jinhui Huang, a MIT M.Arch graduate and former designer at celebrated firms like Weiss/Manfredi, and Pak Kin Chan, an urbanist with experience at DLN and Kengo Kuma & Associates, lead a talented team exploring innovative spatial typologies across all scales. From interiors and structures to urban masterplans, Protoscapes aspires to seed "protoscapes" - dynamic architectural habitats empowering how we collectively live, think and feel. Previous Next

Building Area: 7,211 m² Completion Date: 2024 Client: Haiyan Urban Construction Investment Development Co., Ltd. Photography: LYCS Feature: Project - In a remarkable fusion of industrial heritage and cultural preservation, LYCS Architecture has unveiled the Haiyan Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, a sophisticated adaptive reuse project that breathes new life into a former power meter factory in Zhejiang Province, China. The 7,211-square-meter development masterfully balances exhibition spaces, boutique accommodation, and commercial areas while paying homage to the site's industrial past. The project's most striking feature is its innovative façade treatment, where curved perforated aluminum panels create a rhythmic interplay of horizontal lines and vertical elements. This contemporary skin wraps around the existing structure, initiating a dialogue between old and new that defines the project's architectural approach. The original factory entrance, preserved for its distinctive industrial character, serves as a historical anchor within the modernized complex. At the heart of the development, LYCS has meticulously reconstructed the historic "Double Pool Impression" landscape, a significant cultural landmark in Haiyan's history. This water feature is thoughtfully integrated with elements of intangible cultural heritage, such as traditional rolling lanterns, creating a dynamic sequence of views that draws inspiration from classical Chinese garden design principles. The architects employed a sophisticated "composite renewal strategy" encompassing demolition, restoration, preservation, and insertion. A particularly noteworthy addition is the "historical corridor" at ground level, which takes its cues from traditional local residences. This architectural element effectively connects the heritage museum, historic façades, and boutique accommodations while referencing the vernacular architecture of Haiyan through its continuous gabled walls. The project's location at the intersection of Wenchang West Road and Qiyuan Road positions it within a cultural cluster, adjacent to significant attractions including the Qiyuan Garden, the Zhang Leping Memorial Hall, and the Haiyan County Museum. This strategic setting reinforces the development's role as a crucial node in the area's cultural infrastructure, while demonstrating how thoughtful architectural intervention can revitalize industrial heritage for contemporary cultural purposes. Design Team - Founded in 2011, LYCS Architecture has established itself as one of China's most progressive architectural practices, earning recognition as one of ArchDaily's top emerging Chinese design firms and BUILD Magazine's Most Innovative Design Studio. Designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Perkins&Will, this multi-functional art complex reimagines the site's rich heritage, transforming the legacy of ancient granaries into a modern "container of culture." The center's three distinct volumes, housing an opera house, theatre, and concert hall, are unified by swooping roof structures that echo the silhouette of traditional storehouses. This architectural gesture not only pays homage to the site's past but also creates a visually captivating presence on the Beijing skyline. The buildings' folding facades ingeniously reference both the sails of canal boats and the fluid movement of stage curtains, seamlessly blending historical context with theatrical allure. Functionality and aesthetics coalesce in the design, with each structure tailored to its specific performance requirements. The opera house, in particular, demonstrates this synthesis, its form meticulously shaped to meet demanding acoustic standards. Innovative sustainable features, including perforated aluminum panels and a "sponge" landscape design, underscore the project's commitment to environmental stewardship. Connected by a shared platform that extends into the surrounding landscape, the center invites public engagement, offering new vantage points of the UNESCO-listed Grand Canal. This interplay between architecture and environment creates a dynamic cultural hub that not only hosts world-class performances but also revitalizes the waterfront, promising to become a vibrant destination for both locals and visitors alike. This thoughtful design allows the small footprint to feel surprisingly spacious and livable. The cabin's connection to the outdoors is paramount, with large glazed sliding doors on the south facade inviting the landscape in. A flat roof doubles as a deck space while providing thermal benefits by retaining snow in winter. S design farm | Archicasting

Project Name: Addition and Subtraction House Location: Chiba, Japan Design Team: S Design Farm Building Area: 84.46 m² Completion Date: October 2023 Photographer: Yasuyuki Kojima Feature: Project - Japanese architects Kuki Health and Masako Kuki of S Design Firm have redefined residential design with their innovative " Addition and Subtraction House," a compact 65-square-meter (interior) home in Chiba that challenges conventional notions of architectural richness during the post-pandemic era. Driven by a profound philosophical inquiry into the essence of prosperity, the architects have crafted a dwelling that masterfully balances "enrichment through addition" and "enrichment through subtraction." The project emerges as a sophisticated response to rising construction costs and evolving domestic expectations, demonstrating how architectural innovation can transcend spatial limitations. The home's most striking feature is its unconventional "outdoor living" space—essentially a hollowed-out area that remains partially connected to the interior. This ingenious design creates a semi-controlled exterior zone that embraces unpredictability, allowing spontaneous interactions with nature, from unexpected wildlife visitors to casual moments like impromptu fire pit gatherings. Technically exceptional, the house achieves high-performance sustainability through meticulous design strategies. Featuring top-tier thermal insulation (Grade 6), triple-glazed windows, and a 6kW solar power system, the residence achieves near-zero energy consumption while maintaining exceptional indoor comfort. The architects report maintaining stable indoor temperatures between 20-25°C year-round with minimal energy expenditure. By deliberately constraining the interior to 65 square meters and incorporating a 33-square-meter loft, the design exemplifies a nuanced approach to spatial efficiency. The architects prioritized creating emotional richness over pure square footage, proving that architectural quality transcends physical dimensions. This residential prototype represents more than just a home—it's a manifesto on contemporary living, challenging architects and inhabitants to reimagine prosperity through thoughtful, sustainable design. Design Team - Founded in 2008, S Design Farm Co., Ltd., led by Takeshi Shikauchi, embodies a profound dedication to crafting spaces that merge sustainability, comfort, and architectural ingenuity. As a first-class architect's office based in Tokyo, the firm is renowned for designing high-performance, energy-efficient homes and dynamic interiors that inspire everyday life. The design philosophy emphasizes balance—prioritizing thermal insulation and airtightness without compromising the harmony between architecture and its natural surroundings. Under Shikauchi’s leadership, who is also a seasoned lecturer at prestigious institutions such as Tokyo Metropolitan University, S Design Farm has garnered numerous accolades. Recent achievements include the Asia Design Prize Gold Award 2023 and nominations for the ArchDaily Building of the Year 2023 for their innovative "Addition and Subtraction House." Their "Waterfall Villa" has also received international recognition for its luxurious yet sustainable design ethos. Specializing in custom residential projects and full-scale renovations, S Design Farm incorporates cutting-edge techniques to achieve ZEH standards and nearly no-heating homes. Their commitment extends beyond technical performance, fostering spaces that embrace subtle natural changes and enrich the lives of occupants. 2025 Previous Next

Wittman Estes | Archicasting

2024 Previous Next

Field Architecture | Archicasting

Project Name: Big Sur House Location: Big Sur Coast, California, USA Design Team: FIELD Architecture Total Floor Area: 687 m² Completion: December 2022 Photography: Joe Fletcher Design Features: Project - FIELD Architecture's Big Sur House is a 687-square-metre contemporary residential masterpiece that embodies the sophisticated fusion of architectural humility and environmental symbiosis. The project is situated on a rugged site shaped by tectonic action, heavy winter storms, extreme solar exposure, atmospheric salinity, and the constant motion of oceanic swells, creating an extraordinary visual dialogue between architecture and the spectacular landscape. The villa's most revolutionary design feature lies in its split pavilion configuration: two stone building masses connected by a bridge that spans a restored seasonal ravine. This bold organizational strategy not only allowed the architects to resurrect a native waterway that carries rainfall from the Santa Lucia mountains to the Pacific Ocean, but also created a habitat corridor that has already attracted returning wildlife. The building literally makes space for nature to flow through its heart. FIELD Architecture's design strategy revolves around the central balance between architectural resilience and landscape integration. Massive tapered stone walls echo the striated cliff faces below, their slender gray courses creating a visual dialogue with geological formations. Above these grounding elements, separated roofs appear to float through an ingenious operable clerestory system, visually merging with the horizon and adjacent Monterey cypress grove. The principal façades operate as carefully designed frames, transforming views of the surrounding complex ecological environment into a series of living tableaux. Interior spaces prioritize flexibility and adaptability, with room configurations designed for flexible use and future adaptation as family needs change and evolve. From intimate gatherings to more inclusive periodic events, the architecture serves the family across a range of functions. Optimized shading systems, thermal mass of large stone walls, clerestory venting, and a large solar array on the roof significantly reduce energy consumption. Exterior materials that can endure solar, wind, saline, and fire exposure further increase the building's durability and longevity. All structural timber is FSC certified, with the majority comprising recycled content engineered timber. An onsite septic system eliminates waste, recycles water, and naturally replenishes water tables. The Big Sur House represents a paradigm of site-specific coastal modernism: an architectural language that prioritizes ecological restoration, environmental resilience, and architectural humility in perfect symbiosis with its spectacular setting. Design Team - FIELD Architecture is a full-service, design-forward practice focused on creating architecture that belongs to the land and fosters connection between individuals and the places they love. Led by father-and-son team Stan Field and Jess Field, the firm's interest in place-making spans generations and countries, embodying a unique inheritance of architectural wisdom. Stan Field brings exceptional architectural pedigree, having studied under legendary architect Louis Kahn and earning his Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He possesses decades of international experience, having served as Chief Architect to the City of Jerusalem and practiced in three countries where his work has been widely acclaimed. Jess Field, born in South Africa and immersed in architectural discourse from an early age, developed design fluency through early sketching and drafting, later earning his Master of Architecture from UC Berkeley with highest honors and winning the Eisner Prize for highest creative achievement. The firm's philosophical foundation centers on the belief that architecture should facilitate a conversation with nature, enabling humans to return to being "a part" of nature rather than "apart" from it. This ethos drives their distinctive GROUNDSCAPE methodology—a comprehensive site-reading process that begins with profound respect for what each place wants to become, exploring site conditions, cultural context, available resources, and historical narratives. FIELD Architecture's multidisciplinary approach recognizes architecture's position at the intersection of art and science, function and form, weaving creative insight with rigorous technical expertise to deliver thoughtful, inspiring, sustainable, and authentic built environments. The studio comprises talented individuals working collaboratively to realize the vision for each project, embodying principles of rich material sensibility, holistic ecological thinking, and integrity of craft. 2022 Previous Next
