Feature: Project - Plan:b arquitectos has completed Gotham House, a striking rental apartment building in Medellín, Colombia that skilfully maximizes natural light and ventilation on a narrow urban site. The five-story development contains one apartment per floor, each benefitting from a deep plan with balconies and terraces at either end to enable effective cross-breezes and sun exposure. A standout element is the façade treatment which sees six structural concrete arches create a cadence of rectangular and curved openings across the front elevation. This arresting frontage gives the building a striking visual identity while pragmatically allowing ample daylight to penetrate deep into the floor plates. Internally, the apartments are planned with open-plan living spaces to the east and bedrooms to the west, ensuring the principal rooms receive morning and evening light respectively. Intermediate spaces like balconies provide coveted outdoor amenity for each residence. On the uppermost level, the penthouse enjoys a private roof terrace with pergolas framing views out over Medellín's cityscape. Throughout, Plan:b has created a sense of luminosity and permeability by expressing the raw concrete structural elements. With its bold street presence and intelligent environmental response, Gotham House represents an exemplary example of how to design generous, light-filled homes within the constraints of dense urban plots. Design Team - Founded in 2000 in Medellín, Colombia, Plan:b arquitectos is an acclaimed architectural practice led by principals Felipe Mesa and Federico Mesa. Named after Hungarian philosopher Ágnes Heller, the Ágnes-Heller-Haus embodies her principles of vibrant community and unfettered freedom through its design. By compressing the building volume along the Innrain street edge, the architects have liberated a generous, publicly accessible campus green at the center of the site. This creates a verdant oasis and recreational space that connects the university precinct to the popular Inn River promenade. It's a bold urban planning move that not only shapes the building's striking cubic form, but also enhances the character of the surrounding area. Inside, the 13,000 sq m facility houses a 600-seat auditorium, 200-person lecture hall, canteen, library, offices and learning zones - all organized around a central atrium. This light-filled heart provides orientation and facilitates chance encounters, operating as a democratic interface between the building's diverse functions. Referencing Innsbruck's historic arcades, the main entrance portal by artist Peter Sandbichler bridges the university's academic program with the fabric of the city. Overall, the Ágnes-Heller-Haus demonstrates how measured density can unlock valuable public realms, placing environmental and social sustainability at the core of the campus experience. Design Team - Established in Dornbirn, Austria, mohr niklas architekten has evolved over the decades into a highly accomplished architectural design firm, now led by principals Günter Mohr and Markus Niklas. Commissioned by a family seeking a tranquil retreat, this 2,100-square-foot home seamlessly integrates with its dramatic natural setting, offering sweeping vistas of the Mojave Desert and the adjacent Joshua Tree National Park. The property's strategic placement prioritizes the breathtaking southern views, which are dominated by a boulder-strewn hillside and ancient watershed canyons. Embracing this unique topography, the home's orientation and design elements work in harmony with the arid desert climate, maximizing passive solar heating during the winter while shielding against the harsh northern winds. The home's layout reflects a thoughtful balance between communal and private spaces. Each bedroom enjoys its own dedicated patio and direct access to the natural surroundings, fostering a sense of solitude and reflection. Meanwhile, the primary living areas are strategically positioned to take advantage of the stunning canyon views, creating a serene oasis for family gatherings. Brunner Architecture's masterful approach to this project is evident in the way the home's materiality and form embrace the rugged desert aesthetic. The use of natural materials, such as stone and weathered wood, seamlessly blends the structure with its surroundings, while the clean lines and minimalist detailing lend an air of contemporary sophistication. The Canyon View Residence is a testament to the power of design to enhance our connection with the natural world. By thoughtfully integrating the home into its breathtaking setting, Brunner Architecture has crafted a truly exceptional retreat that celebrates the beauty and majesty of the Joshua Tree landscape. Nestled in the rugged beauty of Joshua Tree, California, Brunner Architecture is a small yet highly esteemed design firm that has been leaving an indelible mark on the Coachella Valley and High Desert region for over two decades.

Project Name: Roxborough House Location: Toronto, Canada Design Team: gh3 * Total Floor Area: 2,690 ft² Completion: 2022 Photography: Raymond Chow Feature: Project - Situated in Toronto's South Rosedale heritage conservation district, gh3* architects have masterfully transformed an Edwardian home from the 1920s into a contemporary dwelling that bridges historical preservation with minimalist design sensibilities. The Roxborough House renovation navigates the complex challenge of respecting stringent heritage restrictions while fulfilling the client's desire for modernization. The project's most distinctive feature is its thoughtful rear intervention, where two new brick-clad structures—a two-story addition and a multipurpose garage—create an intimate courtyard garden. The architects employed hand-molded brick for these elements, maintaining visual harmony with the neighborhood's original masonry facades. In a sustainable gesture, reclaimed joists from the existing house were repurposed for the garage construction, establishing a material dialogue between old and new. Inside, gh3* has reimagined the spatial flow without altering the original program. The ground floor's reorganization revolves around a continuous hallway along the western wall, which incorporates original leaded windows now liberated from their previous contexts to create an abstract composition. These varied openings produce a rhythmic play of daylight throughout the day, animating the interior spaces. The renovation elevates the minimalist aesthetic through elemental forms—a soapstone kitchen island, an arched ante-room pantry, and a deeply vaulted hallway leading to the principal bedroom. These simple yet powerful geometric interventions unify space and function while creating visual intrigue. Particularly noteworthy is the rear addition's new family entrance, sheltered by a vaulted structure with strategically placed skylights and windows that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. This thoughtful connection to the courtyard garden reinforces the project's holistic approach to architecture and landscape. The Roxborough House exemplifies gh3*'s signature design philosophy of abstraction and distillation, creating spaces of material continuity, precise proportions, and carefully calibrated light—all while maintaining a profound respect for Toronto's architectural heritage. Design Team - Founded in 2006, gh3* has established itself as one of Canada's most innovative architectural design practices, earning peer recognition and numerous prestigious awards for its distinctive approach to the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and landscape. Led by Founding Principal and Creative Director Pat Hanson (BFA, MArch, OAA, AAA, FRAIC), the firm has cultivated a reputation for design integrity across diverse typologies and scales. The practice's interdisciplinary team, including key leaders Raymond Chow, Elise Shelley, and Joel Di Giacomo, approaches each project with a modernist sensibility toward order and social possibility, while maintaining a strong environmental consciousness. This methodology has resulted in an impressive portfolio spanning intimate residential projects to complex civic infrastructure. gh3*'s work has garnered international acclaim, including multiple Governor General's Medals for projects such as the Stormwater Facility, Borden Park Natural Swimming Pool, and the Photographers Studio over a Boathouse. The firm's pioneering work in urban water infrastructure earned it recognition as one of the World's Twenty Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company in 2020. The studio's design philosophy emphasizes the creation of meaningful connections between architecture and landscape within urban contexts. Their projects demonstrate a commitment to transcending purely functional requirements, instead integrating pragmatic needs with poetic expression to create aesthetically impactful environments that enhance everyday experiences. Through their client-centered approach and environmental responsibility, gh3* continues to produce spatially engaging places that inspire civic pride while advancing the discourse on sustainable design practices in contemporary architecture.

< 返回 Simple Design Archive 美术馆 HAS design and research 项目名称:Simple Design Archive 地点:安徽省合肥市,中国 设计团队:HAS design and research 总建筑面积:440 m² 竣工时间:2024年 摄影:W Workspace 设计特色: 项目 - HAS design and research在中国合肥揭幕了Simple Design Archive美术馆 - 这是一个占地440平方米的空间,巧妙地模糊了建筑、自然和声音之间的界限。 Project Name: Simple Design Archive Gallery Location: Hefei, Anhui Province, China Design Team: HAS design and research Lead Architects: Jenchieh Hung, Kulthida Songkittipakdee Total Area: 440 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: W Workspace Lighting Consultants: Jenna Tsailin Liu, Visual Feast (VF) Landscape Consultant: Weili Yang Construction Consultant: Zaiwei Song Contractor:Guangdong Xingyi Decoration Group Anhui Co., Ltd Feature: Project - HAS Design and Research has unveiled the Simple Design Archive Gallery in Hefei, China – a 440-square-metre museum space that masterfully blurs the boundaries between architecture, nature, and sound. The project stands as a testament to how thoughtful design can create sanctuary-like spaces within busy urban environments. Drawing inspiration from the legendary Huangshan Mountain, architects Jenchieh Hung and Kulthida Songkittipakdee have crafted a series of curved walls that form the building's distinctive entrance. Unlike traditional museums that open directly to their surroundings, these undulating walls create what the architects call an "echo chamber" courtyard – a poetic intervention that both shields the interior from urban noise and cultivates a unique acoustic environment. The museum's innovation lies in its sophisticated approach to environmental design. The curved walls serve multiple functions: they act as noise barriers, create dynamic light patterns throughout the day, and establish a microecosystem that attracts local wildlife. This careful consideration of natural elements transforms the space into more than just a gallery – it becomes a living, breathing entity that changes with the rhythms of nature. Inside, the flowing forms continue, with curved walls extending seamlessly from exterior to interior. The gallery space features a dramatic five-meter-high skylight that works in concert with a seasonal forest garden, creating ever-changing patterns of light and shadow. The art and materials library, housing contemporary Asian artworks and modern Northern European furniture, employs continuous walls that double as display surfaces and storage solutions. What sets this project apart is its successful integration of seemingly contradictory elements: it's both a protective sanctuary and an open, flowing space; a carefully curated gallery and a natural ecosystem; a modern architectural intervention and a spiritual retreat. The Simple Design Archive Gallery represents a new typology of cultural space – one that prioritizes experiential quality and environmental harmony while fulfilling its primary function as a museum and archive. Design Team - HAS design and research, established by Jenchieh Hung and Kulthida Songkittipakdee with offices in Bangkok and Shanghai, has emerged as one of Asia's most innovative architectural practices. The firm's philosophy centers on a unique "design + research" methodology that explores the intersection of natural and manufactured environments in contemporary Asian urbanism. The practice's design approach, which they term "The Improvised, MANufAcTURE and Chameleon Architecture," investigates the synthesis between urban phenomena and architectural intervention. Their portfolio encompasses cultural institutions, religious architecture, installations, and experimental projects, with a particular focus on how temporary structures and informal spaces can create new forms of "nature" within dense urban environments. Under the leadership of Hung and Songkittipakdee, both acclaimed for their academic and professional achievements, the firm has garnered numerous international accolades, including the 2024 Architonic Top 10 Curated Projects and the 2023 INDE Award. Their work is characterized by a sophisticated understanding of materiality, tectonic expression, and environmental sensitivity. The firm's research-driven approach extends beyond conventional architectural practice, with both principals serving as visiting professors at prestigious institutions and contributing to architectural discourse through publications, exhibitions, and lectures, establishing them as key figures in shaping contemporary Asian architecture.
With its striking geometric forms and bold brick facade, the Samseon-dong Mix-use development by a round architects breathes new life into a dense urban district of Seoul. The L-shaped site prompted an ingenious massing strategy that visually unites the new building with an adjacent existing structure into a cohesive cubic composition. Using the same red brick cladding across both volumes allows them to be read as a singular architectural statement, despite their differing scales. The architects deftly played with lines, proportions and materiality to forge a harmonious whole from disparate parts. This contextual sensitivity is balanced by moments of sculptural expression that lend the project a distinct contemporary edge. The highlight is the triangular facade treatment at the corner, which creates a dramatic visual pivot point. With its angular surfaces and protruding brick fins, this striking element imparts a sense of movement and dynamism. It elevates the design from the ordinary while enlivening the streetscape with an eye-catching landmark. Inside, the interplay of form continues, with the triangular protrusion carving out unique interior spaces full of angled surfaces and diagonal sightlines. This innovative mixed-use intervention exemplifies how strategic urban infill can enhance density while raising the design bar. Founded in 2013, a round architects is a Seoul-based practice lauded for their contextually attuned yet imaginative designs.
Chiasmus Partners | Archicasting
Project Name: Rosemary Cafe Location: Seongnam City, South Korea Design Team: Chiasmus Partners Total Floor Area: 570 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Namsun Lee Feature: Project - Nestled beside the Daewang Reservoir in Seongnam, South Korea, the Rose Mary Cafe by Chiasmus Partners emerges as a poetic architectural statement that dissolves boundaries between built form and natural landscape. Completed in 2024, this 570-square-meter project comprises two distinct buildings ingeniously connected by a central staircase that functions as both physical and conceptual bridge. The cafe's most striking feature is its DNA-like spiral structure that organically connects four interior spaces across two floors, plus rooftop areas. This innovative spatial organization creates a continuous flow between the legally separated buildings, resulting in six interconnected zones that each frame distinctive views of the surrounding environment. Chiasmus Partners, led by architects Hyunho Lee, Chika Nomura, and James Wei Ke, have masterfully employed curved geometries throughout the design. The facade's sweeping curves maximize exposure to the panoramic vistas of Daewang Reservoir and the forested Inreungsan Mountain backdrop. These curves continue seamlessly from exterior to interior, creating pavilion-like spaces that appear to float within the landscape. The architectural envelope features three layers of curved balconies stacked vertically, complemented by crystal glass curtain walls that reflect the transparent qualities of water and evoke the layered fog that often shrouds the surrounding mountains. This material strategy creates a constantly changing dialogue between the building and its setting as light conditions shift throughout the day. Inside, curved ceilings mirror the exterior's fluid forms, while columns appear to flow downward from above, creating a cohesive spatial experience. By maintaining material continuity between inside and out, the architects have achieved a sense of singular, unified space despite the building's complex organization. Conceived as a leisure destination where visitors can experience nature from an elevated perspective, Rose Mary Cafe strips away unnecessary functional elements to create contemplative spaces that prioritize the surrounding landscape. The result is an architectural pavilion that serves as both frame and canvas for experiencing the natural beauty of its setting. Design Team - Chiasmus Partners was founded in New York in 2005, with current offices in Seoul and Beijing. This international architectural firm is led by three principal partners: Hyunho Lee, Chika Nomura, and James Wei Ke, with a design team that includes talented professionals such as Yeongwoo Son and Seongyeol Lee. The firm focuses on various types of architectural projects, encompassing cultural facilities, educational institutions, commercial developments, and residential projects. Their representative works include the Kyunghee University Campus Masterplan (Space21), the IFEZ Arts Center in Incheon, and numerous award-winning residential projects. Hyunho Lee is qualified with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and currently serves as the Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Hongik University, while being a partner at Chiasmus Partners since 2006. Chika Nomura holds Japanese architectural qualifications and has been a partner at Chiasmus Partners since 2017, also serving as an adjunct professor at Hongik University's College of Architecture and Urban Planning. James Wei Ke has been a partner at Chiasmus Partners since 2006 and previously worked as a senior designer at Atelier FCJZ in Beijing. Chiasmus's design methodology is built on rigorous investigation of each site's inherent qualities, resulting in architectural solutions where form and content become inseparable expressions of function and meaning. The firm has received numerous honors, including the 2018 Architecture Master Prize, the 2018 World Architecture Award, and nomination for the 2022 Dezeen Award. They believe in the magical ability of architecture to preserve, transform, and intensify the essential qualities of places and human experience. Their work resonates with both contemporary design discourse and timeless architectural principles.

Kamakura Studio | Archicasting
Project Name: HOUSE F Location: Ootakanomori, Nagareyama City, Chiba, Japan Design Team: Kamakura Studio Total Floor Area: 168.79 m² Completion: January 2022 Photography: TOREAL Koji Fujii, Shinkenchiku-sha Design Features: Project - Kamakura Studio's HOUSE F is a 168.79-square-metre residential and office masterpiece that embodies the sophisticated balance between community-engaged architectural design and seamless integration with daily life. The project is situated in an emerging neighborhood where 75% of residents have moved in within the past decade, creating an extraordinary social function where architecture serves as both community catalyst and neighborhood connector. The building's most revolutionary design feature lies in its multifunctional ground-floor spatial configuration: an open office space that simultaneously functions as a semi-public zone where neighbors can naturally gather. This innovative spatial strategy not only allowed the architects to extend private life toward the community, but also created a flexibly transforming multifunctional venue—becoming a small café through sharing extra coffee, serving as a cultural exchange center through community library functions, and hosting film screenings with projection equipment. The building literally makes space for community interaction to unfold at its core. Kamakura Studio's design strategy revolves around the central balance between blurred architectural boundaries and spatial continuity. Continuous materials, design elements, and floor levels blur traditional distinctions between interior and exterior, creating a spatial experience of "sharing something together, whether inside or outside the house." Separated roofs combined with a three-dimensional façade greening system visually integrate with the surrounding environment, responding to the local plant-sharing network that has developed across dozens of households. The principal façades operate as community interfaces, displaying the building's public functions to the street while maintaining residential privacy. Interior spaces prioritize functional flexibility and adaptability, with room configurations designed for flexible use and adaptation to evolving community activity needs. From coffee sharing and book exchanges to workshops, lectures, and film screenings, the architecture serves diverse community functional requirements. Three-dimensional greening systems, natural ventilation design, and open-plan spatial layouts significantly enhance the building's environmental adaptability. Exterior materials capable of withstanding Japanese climatic conditions further increase the building's durability and longevity. Terraces and interior spaces that alternate throughout both plan and section create rich spatial experiences reminiscent of living among forest trees. HOUSE F represents a paradigm of community-responsive residential architecture: an architectural language that prioritizes social connection, neighborhood interaction, and architecture as community infrastructure in perfect symbiosis between private residence and public function. Design Team - Kamakura Studio Co., Ltd. is a full-service, design-forward practice focused on creating architecture that fosters community connections and cultivates deep relationships between residents and the places they inhabit. Led by principal architects Keisuke Fukui and Keisuke Morikawa in collaborative leadership, the firm's focus on place-making and community building embodies forward-thinking approaches within contemporary Japanese architectural practice. Keisuke Fukui brings solid architectural educational foundation, graduating from Nihon University College of Science and Technology Department of Architecture in 2007, and completing graduate studies at Y-GSA (Yokohama National University Graduate School) in 2010. He gained practical experience at NAP Architectural Design Office, established his individual practice in 2012, and co-founded Kamakura Studio with Keisuke Morikawa in 2016. Keisuke Morikawa also graduated from Nihon University College of Science and Technology Department of Architecture, later completing his master's degree at Tokyo Metropolitan University, and worked at Kume Sekkei and Atsushi Kitagawara Architects, bringing rich design experience to the firm. The firm's philosophical foundation centers on the belief that architecture should facilitate dialogue within communities, enabling residents to become "stakeholders" in neighborhood development rather than "bystanders." This ethos drives their distinctive "Life Extension" methodology—a comprehensive design process that opens daily life functions to the community, beginning with profound understanding of what each community wants to become, exploring demographic structures, social needs, cultural contexts, and future development potential. Kamakura Studio's multidisciplinary approach recognizes that residential architecture exists at the intersection of private and public, individual and collective, weaving creative spatial strategies with rigorous functional analysis to deliver thoughtful, inspiring, sustainable, and authentic community architecture. Since its establishment, the firm has received multiple domestic and international awards including Good Design Award 2022, IF Design Award, and Chiba Prefecture Architectural Culture Award, demonstrating professional standards and innovative capabilities in community-responsive architectural design.

Feature: Project - Nestled on a narrow 9m x 38m plot in Singapore, the House of a Thousand Leaves by ZIVY Architects reinvents the multi-generational home with an ingenious inward-looking design. Rather than segregated private zones, this three-and-a-half story semi-detached house fosters connectedness through shared spaces that encourage chance encounters between family members. The pièce de résistance is the soaring quadruple-volume atrium at the heart of the home. Oriented north-south, it capitalizes on natural ventilation with breeze block endwalls that create a wind-tunnel effect. The tapered concrete blocks filter dappled light and rain, completing the biophilic experience along with deep skylights and integrated greenery across levels. But the atrium is far more than just a sculptural centerpiece. It doubles as an open circulation core, with a continuous perforated metal mesh staircase that visually connects all floors. Full-height glazing along the interior atrium wall furthers sightlines and airflow into the adjoining living spaces occupied by individual family units. Sustainability prominently features, from solar panels to repurposed walnut chip flooring in the tea room. By cleverly intertwining nature and multi-generational living, ZIVY has crafted an adaptable tropical haven for occupants to grow together over decades to come. Design Team - Founded in 2019 by Loh Zixu and Evy Sutjahjo, ZIVY Architects is a Singapore-based practice guided by the belief that great design emerges through rigorous exploration and a keen attention to detail. The firm's collaborative approach places inclusive design sessions at the heart of every project, transforming briefs from ordinary to extraordinary. Led by Zixu and Evy, both Registered Architects with the Board of Architects Singapore and Corporate Members of the Singapore Institute of Architects, ZIVY's work prioritizes creating richly layered spatial experiences imbued with purpose and personality. Zixu's rational design process harmonizes with Evy's sensitivity for livability and poetry. Completing the core team are Architectural Associates Jean Lin and Pang Yun Jie, whose fresh perspectives further the practice's dedication to innovation. In the heart of Berlin's Lichtenberg district, a striking new office building has emerged, challenging the architectural landscape with its bold design and thoughtful urban integration. Designed by Tchoban Voss Architekten, the Office Building FA 206 stands as a testament to the fusion of historical industrial aesthetics and contemporary workplace needs. The trapezoidal structure, completed in 2024, occupies a prominent corner plot of 6000 square meters, introducing a refreshing contrast to the surrounding postmodern GDR-era buildings. Its most distinctive feature is the expressive rust-red clinker brick façade, which pays homage to early 20th-century industrial architecture while asserting its own modern identity. The façade's intricate detailing showcases a masterful play of textures and patterns. The building's plinth, encompassing the ground and first floors, boasts a horizontal clinker brick relief reminiscent of Expressionist architecture. Above, the smooth clinker brick surface is punctuated by convex textured bricks, creating a dynamic interplay with changing sunlight. Floor-to-ceiling windows shift subtly across each level, generating a captivating visual rhythm. This design not only enhances the building's aesthetic appeal but also maximizes natural light for the interior spaces. The structure's functionality extends to its flat roof, which doubles as a water retention system and hosts a panoramic terrace overlooking iconic Berlin landmarks. With its gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council, this seven-story edifice exemplifies a harmonious blend of innovative design, historical reference, and environmental consciousness. Tchoban Voss Architekten, a paragon of architectural innovation and longevity, has been shaping the built environment since its inception in 1931.
