Feature: Project - A winding path leads through a densely forested site to the Takane no Mori Nursery School, an ingeniously designed childcare facility by Takashige Yamashita + Young-A Kang. Nestled amongst the rolling terrain, the nursery comprises eight gently curving pavilions arranged in a circular plan that embraces the natural landscape. The architects carefully considered how to provide children of different ages with an environment that nurtures interaction while maintaining appropriate separation. Their solution allows all the pavilions to open onto a shared courtyard at the center, enabling visual connections, while each pavilion has its own discrete entrance from the encircling path. A sweeping, undulating roof ties the pavilions together into a cohesive whole, with its curved form conceived as an architectural echo of the site's undulating topography. Deep overhanging eaves create sheltered transitional zones, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. Throughout, the nursery establishes a poetic dialogue between built form and nature. Openings punctuate the roof to draw dappled forest light into the interiors, while sheltered corners embrace small trees, making the forest feel like an extension of the architecture itself. Design Team - Founded in 2015, Takashige Yamashita Office is a Tokyo-based practice led by principal Takashige Yamashita and partner YoungAh Kang. The firm has rapidly gained international recognition for its sensitive, contextual designs that poetically integrate architecture with the natural environment. Takashige Yamashita, born in Fukuoka in 1980, studied architecture at Tokai University and Tokyo University of the Arts before joining celebrated firm SANAA, where he honed his skills on prominent projects for over a decade. In 2017, he was joined by Kang, who brought experience from positions at SANAA and the Architectural Association's Design Research Lab after studying at the University of Toronto and University of Pennsylvania. This multigenerational, multinational team combines a grounding in Japanese architectural tradition with global perspectives. Their projects, such as the awardwinning Kawaguchiko Toranoko Nursery School and Mori no Clinic, demonstrate a deft handling of materiality, geometry, and lighting to create warm, humane spaces deeply attuned to their settings. With academic appointments at institutions like Kyoto Arts University and several prestigious awards, Takashige Yamashita Office has rapidly become one of Japan's most promising emerging practices, offering a refined yet playful vision of environmental integration. Previous Next
Niko Design Studio | Archicasting
2024 Previous Next

Project Name: FD Residence Location: São Paulo, Brazil Design Team: Padovani Arquitetos Area: 700 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: Evelyn Müller Feature: Project - Nestled in the undulating landscape of São Paulo’s countryside, the FD Residence by Padovani Arquitetos emerges as a sanctuary of modern tranquility, designed to host gatherings while embracing its natural surroundings. Completed in 2024, this 700-square-meter vacation home redefines spatial fluidity through an innovative steel structure and an L-shaped layout, carving out sweeping vistas of the adjacent lake and verdant terrain. Situated discreetly below street level, the residence reveals itself in staggered volumes—a half-level base and a floating upper block—that blend bold geometry with organic subtlety. The facade, a striking interplay of rhythmic wood slats, textured concrete, and matte-black accents, dissolves the boundary between architecture and landscape. This meticulous material palette mirrors the earthy tones of the setting, while expansive, slender eaves cascade around the upper floor, serving as both a sculptural crown and a functional shield against São Paulo’s climate. Below, the steel framework enables daring cantilevers and vast spans, fostering an unbroken dialogue between indoors and out. Inside, a double-height social area anchored by light-toned surfaces amplifies the sense of openness, contrasting elegantly with the exterior’s darker hues. Floor-to-ceiling glass dissolves walls, guiding the eye from the minimalist living spaces to a sun-drenched pool deck and the distant horizon. A lowered ceiling in the outdoor lounge creates intimacy, balancing the home’s grand scale. Meanwhile, the strategic positioning of courtyards and staircases choreographs movement, ensuring each transition offers a framed view or a moment of repose. Landscaping by Daniel Nunes threads native flora through the architecture, enhancing the residence’s symbiotic relationship with its environment. From the reflective pool to the timber-clad eaves, every element is a testament to Padovani Arquitetos’ mastery of light, materiality, and immersive spatial storytelling—a retreat where modernity and nature breathe as one. Design Team - Founded in 2008 by architect Lucas Padovani, São Paulo-based Padovani Arquitetos has carved a distinct niche in contemporary Brazilian architecture through designs that harmonize simplicity, technical innovation, and a profound dialogue with nature. The studio’s multidisciplinary team, led by Creative Director Lucas Padovani and Administrative Director Bruno Padovani, integrates architecture, interior design, and strategic planning to craft spaces that transcend functionality, embodying what the firm describes as “conceptual poetics” tailored to client needs and environmental context. Rooted in the ethos of tropicality , Padovani’s work balances elegance with bioclimatic strategies, utilizing materials and forms that respond to Brazil’s lush landscapes. Projects like the award-winning Valência House and HF House exemplify their mastery of spatial fluidity, where steel frameworks, expansive glass apertures, and organic materiality dissolve boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The firm’s process—marked by rigorous technical investigation and collaborative iteration—ensures each detail aligns with both aesthetic vision and experiential quality, a philosophy reinforced by Architecture Manager Raquel Azevedo and Creative Coordinator Fabio Wetten. In 2024, Padovani’s global acclaim surged with accolades including the Architizer A+ Award for Best Residential Firm and multiple wins at the International Property Awards, LOOP Design Awards, and DNA Paris Design Awards. These honors underscore their ability to merge residential intimacy with bold structural innovation, as seen in projects celebrated for their contextual sensitivity and material sophistication. With offices in Campinas and São Paulo, Padovani Arquitetos continues to redefine Brazilian modernism, proving that architecture can be both a technical discipline and a poetic act—one that invites inhabitants to engage deeply with their environment. 2024 Previous Next
- MA.DE Bistro AN NAM Architecture | Archicasting
2024 Previous Next

Project Name: France Pavilion Expo 2025 Osaka Location: Osaka, Japan Design Team: Coldefy + CRA Total Floor Area: 3,600 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Julien Lanoo Feature: Project - Designed by French architecture studio Coldefy with Italian design and innovation practice CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, the France Pavilion at the Osaka World Expo 2025 is envisioned as a 'theatre of life', where architecture frames moments of presence, movement and interaction. The design draws inspiration from the Japanese legend of Akai Ito, the invisible red thread connecting destined souls. In a time defined by digital estrangement, the Pavilion reclaims physical space as a medium for dialogue. The pavilion's design resembles a carefully choreographed theatrical production, with a fluid sequence of spaces guiding visitors through changing perspectives that mirror the rhythms of daily life — beginning, transition, pause and departure. Most distinctive are its 17 metre high fabric veils resembling theatre curtains suspended down two sides, which interact with natural elements and respond to light and wind, creating a constantly shifting facade. Visitors experience the Pavilion through three carefully structured 'acts': first, an ascent via a sinuous staircase to an observation balcony; then moving inside, navigating a series of curated spaces with installations and scenographic elements tied to the Pavilion's themes, including a sensorial garden offering a moment of reflection; finally concluding with a transition back to the open air and the Expo site, reinforcing the rhythmic flow between inside and outside. Constructed with prefabricated and modular elements, the Pavilion embraces a circular approach, ensuring that its materials can be disassembled and repurposed after the expo. Beyond being a dynamic aesthetic element, the movable curtain facade is also designed for disassembly and repurposing. The Pavilion integrates as many prefabricated and temporary components as possible, such as container structures for office spaces, and these design choices ensure reduced environmental impact, ease of reconfiguration, and adaptability beyond the Expo. Design Team - Coldefy is an international architecture studio headquartered in Lille, France, led by Thomas Coldefy, who was honored as Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2022. The practice's design philosophy pivots on three fundamental axioms: clarity, urbanity, and phenomenology. Their methodology foregrounds the creation of balanced environmental, urban, and social compositions that transcend conventional spatial limitations, weaving landscape and personal narratives into the architectural fabric. With a team of over 50 professionals, the studio approaches each commission through a contextual lens that mediates between programmatic requirements and site-specific conditions. Coldefy's tectonically legible structures prioritize sensory stimuli—light, materiality, and spatial sequence—that anchor human experience beyond mere technical solutions. The studio has received numerous international accolades, including the prestigious European Prize for Architecture (2021), multiple AIA Honor and Merit Awards (2019), and ArchDaily Building of the Year recognitions (2017, 2020). These distinctions affirm Coldefy's position at the vanguard of contemporary architectural discourse, where they continue to explore the dialectic between conceptual clarity and experiential richness, crafting spaces that function as catalysts for social interaction and urban revitalization. 2025 Previous Next

Designed by Modern Office of Design + Architecture (MODA), this multi-residential development challenges conventional notions of inner-city living by incorporating a sprawling 0.6-acre rooftop urban farm. The project's most striking feature is its zigzag sloped roof, which creates a visually dynamic silhouette and serves as a communal space for residents to engage in urban farming, socialize, and connect with nature. This ambitious amenity-scape introduces a scale of urban horticulture previously unseen in Calgary's inner-city housing. GROW's unique approach to fostering community extends beyond its rooftop. The development offers a diverse range of unit sizes, from compact studios to spacious two-story townhomes, encouraging a mix of residents across different age groups and family sizes. This intentional demographic diversity aims to build resilience and social connections through proximity. The architects have ingeniously responded to the site's challenging topography, utilizing a six-metre elevation change to create a terraced effect. This design maximizes views and natural light for all units and cleverly integrates at-grade parking without compromising the building's aesthetic appeal. GROW sets a new standard for multi-residential housing in Calgary by prioritizing social capital alongside real estate value. It offers a compelling vision for more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable urban living, where shared experiences and community engagement are at the forefront of residential design. Founded in 2013 by visionary architects Ben Klumper and Dustin Couzens, Modern Office of Design + Architecture (MODA) has rapidly established itself as a leading multidisciplinary design firm in Calgary, Canada. Project - K-Thengono Design Studio has reimagined the traditional Indonesian lakeside dining experience with their latest project for the Talaga Sampireun restaurant chain in Bali. Departing from the brand's typical formula of individual pavilions surrounding a lake, the architects have crafted an integrated narrative that evokes a rural village nestled beside serene waters. The centerpiece is a sinuous "river" formed by curvaceous dining areas that meander through the expansive site like a sculptural spine. Open-air saung pavilions with leafinspired roofs line this flowing axis, echoing the riverside settlements of old. However, unlike previous Talaga Sampireun outposts, these unique dining spaces offer direct waterfront access, allowing guests to delight in feeding the resident fish. The arrival sequence builds a sense of drama, with a soaring roof that gradually descends to an intimate human scale as one approaches the lake. Strategic skylights pierce this architectural crown, casting dramatic shafts of light that interplay with textures like locally-sourced teak, brass, red brick and rattan crafts. More than just visual delight, the ambiance engages all senses through natural sounds, aromas of regional cuisine, and a harmonious blend of modern and traditional materials. K-Thengono Design Studio has adeptly fused nature, tradition and contemporary vision to create an immersive dining oasis that transcends the typical restaurant experience. The Talaga Sampireun Bali celebrates Indonesia's rich heritage through an innovative contemporary lens. Nestled in the heart of Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture, the Funamachi Base emerges as a captivating blend of tradition and innovation. Designed by Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, this mixed-use facility seamlessly integrates a café and Japanese confectionery shop into the urban fabric, paying homage to the area's rich history as a bustling river port. The project's standout feature is its ingenious blurring of boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. By extending the adjacent park's greenery into the site and employing consistent materials throughout, Nagasaka creates a fluid environment where visitors effortlessly transition from public to private realms. The architecture becomes an extension of the park itself, inviting passersby to engage with the confectionery-making process and immerse themselves in the sensory experience of freshly steamed buns and kneaded sweet bean paste. A striking trio of volumes topped by an expansive roof defines the structure, housing a revived traditional sweets shop alongside modern dining spaces. The designers' thoughtful approach is evident in details like sandblasted PVC pipes traversing indoor and outdoor areas, and multi-functional bulging foundations that serve as counters, benches, and even a well for confectionery production. This architectural gem not only revitalizes a historic district but also aims to catalyze broader urban regeneration, potentially attracting young locals and urban dwellers to Ogaki. The Funamachi Base stands as a testament to the power of architecture in fostering community connections and preserving cultural heritage while embracing contemporary needs. Schemata Architects, founded in 1998 by Jo Nagasaka, has established itself as a pioneering force in Japan's architectural landscape. - PYR 住宅 Cazú Zegers | Archicasting
Project Name: PYR House Location: Panguipulli, Chile Design Team: Cazú Zegers Project Area: 2,024 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: Marcos Zegers Feature: Project - Perched dramatically on the edge of a precipitous landscape in Panguipulli, Chile, the PYR House emerges as a architectural marvel that seamlessly negotiates challenging terrain through innovative design and poetic imagination. Conceived by renowned architect Cazú Zegers, this extraordinary residence transforms topographical constraints into its most compelling design feature, creating a sculptural intervention that dialogues intimately with its rugged natural context. The house's conceptual genesis lies in pyrite—the "stone of home"—which becomes both metaphorical inspiration and structural metaphor. A central geometric staircase, engineered with the cubic crystalline structure of pyrite, vertically connects the property's disparate elevations, from cliff top to lakeside, becoming the architectural spine that articulates the project's spatial complexity. Zegers masterfully addresses the site's challenging solar orientation and forty-foot cliff through a sophisticated three-story volume that appears to emerge organically from the rocky terrain. The lightweight architectural volumes, constructed using a nuanced material palette of metal, wood, and selective concrete, create a dynamic interplay between built form and landscape. Structural ingenuity meets poetic expression in this project, where each floor responds uniquely to its specific land condition. The result is a residential design that transcends conventional architectural boundaries, transforming geographical challenges into opportunities for spatial innovation and sensory experience. The PYR House stands as a testament to Zegers' architectural philosophy—a bold reimagining of how built environments can not just occupy, but truly inhabit challenging landscapes. Design Team - Founded in 1990, Cazú Zegers Architecture Studio has emerged as a transformative force in contemporary architectural practice, distinguished by its profound commitment to creating architecture that intimately dialogues with landscape and cultural context. Led by Cazú Zegers, an architect trained at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV), the studio has developed a unique architectural language that seamlessly integrates built form with the Chilean and Latin American territories. The studio's design philosophy transcends conventional architectural approaches, focusing on a "Low Tech" methodology that prioritizes minimal territorial intervention and a deep respect for natural environments. Zegers' work is characterized by its geopoetic approach, exploring architectural solutions that emerge from a nuanced understanding of place, local materials—particularly wood—and indigenous cultural wisdom. Internationally recognized, Zegers has received prestigious accolades including the Grand Prix of Versailles and the National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World Award. Her practice has been featured in ELLE Decor's Architecture A-List and recognized by Forbes Magazine as a boundary-breaking architectural firm. Currently led by Zegers, the studio continues to push architectural boundaries, emphasizing sustainable design, ethnoarchitecture, and a holistic approach to territorial intervention that respects ecological and cultural ecosystems. 2024 Previous Next

2025 Previous Next

2025 Previous Next
WARchitect | Archicasting
Project Name: N26 Residence Location: Bangkok, Thailand Design Team: WARchitect Lead Architect: Thawin Harnboonseth Project Area: 752㎡ (Total Floor Area) Site Area: 282㎡ Completion: 2024 Photography: Rungkit Charoenwat Feature: Project - In Bangkok's urban landscape, WARchitect's latest residential project stands as a masterful exploration of spatial dynamics and material contrast. The N26 Residence, completed in 2024, challenges conventional residential architecture through its bold L-shaped configuration and dramatic cantilevers that seem to defy gravity. The 752-square-meter house, set on a relatively modest 282-square-meter plot, reimagines the relationship between interior and exterior spaces through its resort-like openness. The architects have crafted a sophisticated architectural narrative around a C-shaped volumetric language, expressed most dramatically in two key elements: a ground-floor box housing the workout room and office, and a striking second-floor master bedroom that extends six meters outward, floating dramatically above the swimming pool. What sets this residence apart is its masterful material dialogue between industrial and organic elements. The exterior is clad in C-Channel steel, presenting a cool, sharp aesthetic that contrasts beautifully with the extensive use of teak wood throughout the interior – a material choice that not only adds warmth but also reflects the homeowner's family business. This interplay creates a dynamic visual tension that defines the project's character. The home's dual-access design, responding to the unique circumstance of family members living across the street, informed a circulation strategy that includes both a four-car drive-in parking area and a welcoming pedestrian entrance. The architects have turned this functional requirement into an opportunity, creating a dramatic entrance sequence where an archway frames a panoramic view of the entire property. Natural light plays a crucial role in the design, particularly in the main living area, where parallel glass walls and large sliding doors create a permeable boundary between inside and out. The landscaping further enhances this indoor-outdoor relationship, featuring a thoughtfully composed combination of lawn areas, rock gardens, and a natural waterfall, all orchestrated around a centerpiece red sage tree that anchors the visual composition. Design Team - WARchitect, established in 2017 in Bangkok, has emerged as one of Thailand's most distinctive architectural practices, specializing in high-end residential architecture. Under the leadership of Design Director Thawin Harnboonseth, the firm has cultivated a reputation for creating sophisticated modern residences that seamlessly blend contemporary aesthetics with functional innovation. The practice's design philosophy centers on creating bespoke architectural solutions with a particular emphasis on modern aesthetics across various interpretations - from luxury and industrial to minimalist and futuristic expressions. The architects have deftly navigated the challenge of reimagining a century-old structure while maintaining its original character, creating a cohesive dialogue between three distinct construction periods. The renovation's most striking feature is its innovative approach to material continuity. Custom white cementitious coatings unify both the old and new facades, creating a chameleon-like exterior that dramatically shifts its presence with the seasons – appearing stark against summer greenery while almost dissolving into the winter landscape. This thoughtful material choice exemplifies the project's subtle yet transformative design philosophy. The architects have expanded the ground floor through a series of sophisticated additions that respect the original building's commanding presence. Three distinct blocks, housing storage and a fireplace, frame strategic views of the surrounding landscape while supporting an expansive overhanging roof. This horizontal extension creates a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces through terraces, pathways, and gardens, without compromising the original pitched roofs' integrity. The project stands out for its commitment to sustainable preservation, employing innovative materials like hemp insulation for its superior breathability and humidity control. The restoration process prioritized local materials and craftsmanship, incorporating unearthed fieldstones and locally-sourced limestone. The design also leverages passive climate control strategies, with the building's mass and orientation working in concert with natural ventilation patterns and solar gains to minimize energy consumption. Through this thoughtful renovation, Pelletier de Fontenay has created a contemporary home that honors its historic foundations while establishing new relationships with its environment. The project serves as a compelling example of how architectural heritage can be preserved and enhanced through sensitive intervention and sustainable design practices. Design Team - Montreal-based architectural practice Pelletier de Fontenay, established in 2010 by Hubert Pelletier and Yves de Fontenay, has emerged as a significant force in contemporary Canadian architecture. The firm's philosophy eschews predetermined stylistic approaches in favor of a process-driven methodology that responds uniquely to each project's specific conditions and context. Led by founding partners Pelletier and de Fontenay, alongside partners Yann Gay-Crosier and Anik Mandalian, the studio has developed an impressive portfolio spanning public cultural institutions, residential projects, and urban planning initiatives. The headquarters, which will eventually span 400,000 square metres and house 15,000 employees, introduces the innovative concept of a "supercell" - an organizational approach inspired by biological systems and artificial intelligence networks. This concept allows the campus to function as a self-growing, interconnected organism that can adapt and expand within the urban fabric. "The project challenges conventional notions of corporate architecture by prioritizing public accessibility and environmental integration," explained line+ studio. "We first planned a city park, and only then constructed the headquarters within it." The studio's design emphasizes vertical development paired with horizontal connectivity, featuring a series of towers linked by elevated walkways and public spaces. The buildings are characterized by continuous terraces and rooftop tracks that blur the boundary between office environment and parkland, creating what the architects call a "headquarters in the park, park within the headquarters" experience. A distinguishing feature of the complex is its sophisticated facade system, which employs a dual approach: the exterior presents a tech-forward aesthetic using anodized aluminum panels and colored glazed glass, while the interior interfaces with small-scale ecological gardens. The facade's horizontal linear language is complemented by an innovative BIPV (Building-Integrated Photovoltaics) system that incorporates solar panels seamlessly into the architectural design. Inside, the workspace design moves away from traditional office layouts, organizing functions into four distinct modules: work, meetings, recharge, and communication. The interior spaces include a "shared theater" in the northern atrium and a "cohabitation square" in the southern atrium, fostering a campus-like atmosphere that promotes collaboration and creativity. The project's sustainable features extend beyond its solar integration, with the design incorporating extensive green spaces, natural ventilation systems, and energy-efficient materials. The campus serves multiple roles: as a public urban park, a creative workplace, and what line+ describes as a "spiritual home" for iFLYTEK employees. By combining technological innovation with ecological sensitivity and public accessibility, line+ studio has created a new paradigm for corporate architecture that responds to both environmental concerns and changing workplace dynamics in the tech sector. Design Team - Founded in late 2017, gad · line+ studio emerged as a pioneering force in Hangzhou's architectural landscape under the visionary leadership of Meng Fanhao and Zhu Peidong. This innovative design atelier has rapidly established itself as a "creative factory" at the forefront of market-driven architectural solutions. At its core, line+ studio embodies the concept of boundary transcendence. The "line" in their name represents the architectural foundation, while the "+" signifies their commitment to cross-disciplinary innovation. This unique approach allows the firm to seamlessly integrate planning, architecture, interiors, product design, operations, and landscape architecture. Led by Meng Fanhao, a recipient of the prestigious 2021 RIBA International Prize, line+ studio has garnered numerous accolades for its cutting-edge designs. The firm's portfolio showcases a diverse range of projects, from urban public spaces to high-end residential developments and rural revitalization initiatives. line+ studio's design philosophy is rooted in critical thinking and contextual sensitivity. By balancing urban sophistication with rural engagement, and local cultural research with commercial viability, the firm has positioned itself as a crucial mediator between cultural heritage and contemporary market demands. With a growing presence in Hangzhou and Shanghai, line+ studio continues to push the envelope of traditional practice. Their commitment to spatial quality through professional expertise and value creation through innovation solidifies their position as a transformative force in the architectural industry. 2024 Previous Next
PL.Architekci | Archicasting
2024 Previous Next

LRO GmbH & Co. KG Free Architects BDA | Archicasting
Feature: Project - The recent expansion of the 1960s Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart by Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei Architekten creates a new urban boulevard while seamlessly integrating with the existing Brutalist structure. The 20,300 square-metre annex sensitively continues the raw concrete aesthetic of the original building, with intricate hand-crafted wooden formwork used to cast the new exposed concrete façade. This adds an organic, lively texture, contrasting beautifully with the smooth interior surfaces. The four-storey volume extends the library’s linear form, directly addressing the busy Konrad-Adenauer-Straße to reform a stately urban edge. An atrium visually connects the levels, drawing daylight into the centre. The ground floor also houses a new café, opening the building to the city. The first floor pedestrian bridge forms the main entrance, leading into a bright double-height lobby with information, exhibition space and access control. The building’s zig-zagging white concrete façade, with intermittent copper panels, establishes visual harmony with the older reading room. Inside, amenities like light carpeting and wood cladding bring warmth. Through sensitivity to context, materiality and user experience, the architects have created a functional, inviting next chapter for this important Stuttgart institution. Design Team - LRO has its roots in the architecture office founded by Arno Lederer in Stuttgart in 1979. He was joined in partnership by Jórunn Ragnarsdóttir in 1985 and Marc Oei in 1992. Over the past four decades, the firm has steadily grown into an award-winning practice of around 50 staff. Known for creating spaces that engage the human spirit through rich materiality and craft, LRO continues to push creative boundaries. The office prizes both architectural tradition and the questioning of existing contexts to forge new contemporary forms. An intensive, holistic design approach sees small teams nurture projects from competitions through construction. As founding partners Lederer and Ragnarsdóttir stepped back from management in recent years, leadership transitioned seamlessly. Directors Katja Pütter, Klaus Hildenbrand and Heiko Müller joined Oei at the helm in 2021 when the firm became LRO GmbH & Co. KG Freie Architekten BDA. This new generation stewards LRO’s legacy of design excellence, implementing their own vision while remaining true to deeply rooted humanist values that put user experience first. Previous Next
