Feature: Project - Nestled at the dead-end of a T-junction in Toyota City's Tendo neighborhood, the Michikari House designed by Kazuki Moroe Architects brings the concept of "streets" into a private residence. The area is known for its winding roads and alleyways, including the historic Iida Kaido path nearby. Embracing these idiosyncrasies, the architects incorporated multiple open-air "streets" throughout the house to foster interaction, sunlight, and ventilation. At the home's north-south axis, a hobby room with engawa porch fronts the street, blurring public and private space. This allows residents to engage with neighbors while enabling sunlight and breezes to permeate from the inner courtyard to the rear façade. On the east side, another large engawa creates an indoor-outdoor living room for family life to spill out towards the back garden. The architects hoped that if all neighbors did this, it would create communal voids benefitting everyone. Inside, an elevated bridge street connects the east and west wings. Acting like an urban lane, it provides some privacy while allowing family activities to be overheard from the street, with circulation routes modulating interpersonal distances. Ultimately, the house translates the concept of vibrant, welcoming streets into residential architecture. Design Team - Founded in 2008 by Kazuki Moroe, Kazuki Moroe Architects is an architectural design firm based in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Kazuki Moroe previously studied at Tokyo Metropolitan University Graduate School and worked at Shirakansi Associates before establishing his own practice. Over the past 15 years, the firm has been recognized with various awards for its sensitive residential designs attuned to local contexts, including Good Design Awards and the Association for Aichi Quality Housing Awards. Notably, in 2023, Moroe was honored with the Chubu Architecture Award for the Okuma Machine Tool Engineering Building at Nagoya University. With a focus on sustainability and community, Kazuki Moroe Architects continues to produce human-centric architecture across scales from interiors to urban landscapes. 2023 Previous Next

  • GIGI VERDE 奈良店 SIDES CORE | Archicasting

Project Name: GIGI VERDE Nara Location: Nara City, Japan Design Team: SIDES CORE Area: 43 m² Completion: September 1, 2024 Photography: Yosuke Ohtake Lighting Design: DAIKO Electric Co., Ltd. Construction: THE Ltd. Design Period: May 7, 2024 - June 27, 2024 Construction Period: July 15, 2024 - August 6, 2024 Feature: Project - In a masterful demonstration of spatial efficiency, Japanese design studio SIDES CORE, led by Sohei Arao, has created an innovative interior for GIGI VERDE Nara, a flower shop that seamlessly integrates retail, workshop, and consultation spaces within a modest 43-square-meter footprint. The design's centerpiece is a continuously rising floor plane that transforms from entrance to counter to mezzanine, creating a topographical intervention that echoes the mountainous landscape of Nara. This sculptural element, finished in earthy plaster tones, serves multiple functions while providing a neutral backdrop that amplifies the vivid colors of the flowers on display. "The challenge was to create distinct zones without rigid boundaries in such a limited space," explains Arao. The solution manifests in subtle level changes that create natural transitions between areas. The elevated mezzanine, reached by a gently curved path, houses a tranquil consultation area for bridal clients, while the lower level accommodates a spacious workshop where multiple florists can work simultaneously. The shop's innovative storage solutions are integrated within the architectural elements – beneath the 950mm-high counter and within the void spaces created by the elevated floor sections. This intelligent use of space ensures the compact interior remains uncluttered despite the demands of a working flower shop. SIDES CORE's attention to atmospheric detail is evident in the lighting design, developed in collaboration with DAIKO Electric. A carefully positioned pendant light at the rear of the space draws visitors' gaze through the interior, enhancing the perception of depth and height. The stepped display system, featuring organic curves, not only serves as a flexible showcase for varying inventory but also allows passersby to observe florists at work, transforming the retail space into a transparent atelier. This project exemplifies how thoughtful architectural intervention can transform spatial constraints into opportunities for innovation, creating a harmonious environment that enhances both the customer experience and operational efficiency. Design Team - Founded in 2005 by Sohei and Sumiko Arao, SIDES CORE has established itself as one of Japan's most innovative multidisciplinary design studios, operating from their base in Osaka's vibrant Nishiku district. The firm's name reflects their philosophical approach to spatial design - exploring the core essence of spaces from multiple sides and perspectives. The practice has gained international recognition for their holistic approach to architecture and interior design, particularly in the retail and residential sectors. Their portfolio showcases a distinctive minimalist aesthetic that seamlessly integrates Japanese spatial concepts with contemporary design principles. SIDES CORE's expertise spans across various typologies, from meticulously crafted hair salons and restaurants to bespoke residential projects. Under the leadership of Sohei Arao, the studio has expanded into product design, collaborating with prestigious European manufacturers. Notable among these is their "Bevel" stool collection for Spanish brand Punt Mobles in 2013. Their work has garnered numerous accolades, including recognition from Dezeen Awards, ArchDaily Building of the Year nominations, and an American Architecture Prize Bronze Award in 2016. 2024 Previous Next

  • Perchée住宅 Matière Première Architecture | Archicasting

2026 Previous Next

Orange Architects | Archicasting

Project Name: Beaufort Residential Tower Location: Zeist, The Netherlands Design Team: Orange Architects Lead Architects: Jeroen Schipper, Julija Osipenko, Rik Meijer Project Area: 4,400 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: Sebastian van Damme Collaborators: Urban Planning: wUrck Client: Slokker Vastgoed BV, NCB-Projectrealisatie Construction: Slokker Bouwgroep Feature: Project - Orange Architects has completed Beaufort, a sculptural residential tower in Zeist, Netherlands, that appears to twist as it rises through the forest canopy. The 10-story building features a striking composition of stacked volumes that rotate 90 degrees on each floor, creating a dynamic interplay of protruding balconies and recessed outdoor spaces. Located on the edge of Kerckebosch neighborhood, the tower houses 19 luxury apartments and serves as a landmark gateway to the area. The design draws direct inspiration from its woodland setting, incorporating three natural elements – sand, tree trunk, and leaf – as primary themes that manifest in both form and materiality. The building's most distinctive feature is its orchestrated arrangement of L-shaped apartments, which are mirrored on each floor and rotate relative to the level below. This geometric play results in a series of generous "outdoor rooms" that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, allowing residents to feel immersed in the surrounding forest landscape. Sustainability and biophilic design principles are woven throughout the project. The facade combines sustainable Fraké wood cladding with demountable GRC panels, while a geothermal heat pump system and rooftop solar panels help the building achieve NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards. The semi-underground parking garage is ingeniously concealed beneath a landscape of local vegetation, with features like turf bio-blocks and tree trunk retaining walls seamlessly integrating the structure into its natural context. The tower's rational structural grid belies its sculptural appearance, with a central core and perimeter columns supporting the rotating floor plates. Panoramic windows and threshold-free spaces ensure accessibility and maximize views of the forest setting, creating what Orange Architects describes as a collection of "forest villas" that stack vertically into the sky. Design Team - Founded in 2010 in Rotterdam, Orange Architects has established itself as a leading force in contemporary architecture, consistently delivering innovative solutions to complex spatial challenges. Under the leadership of Patrick Meijers and Jeroen Schipper, the practice has cultivated a distinctive approach that merges conceptual rigor with contextual sensitivity. The firm's portfolio spans multiple scales and typologies, from urban planning to bespoke interiors, with a particular emphasis on sustainable design principles encapsulated in their "World | We | Value" framework. This holistic approach integrates environmental stewardship, social dynamics, and enduring value creation into every project from inception to completion. Their recently completed Beaufort Residential Tower exemplifies the practice's design philosophy. The 4,400-square-meter development demonstrates their mastery of computational design and sustainable innovation, featuring a sophisticated rotating floor plate system that creates a dynamic architectural form while maximizing views and natural light. Operating from their headquarters in Rotterdam's city center, Orange Architects has grown to a team of 11-50 professionals, fostering a collaborative environment that combines international expertise with local knowledge. Their work is characterized by a rigorous attention to tectonics, materiality, and social impact, consistently pushing the boundaries of architectural innovation while remaining grounded in practical solutions and user-centered design principles. 2024 Previous Next

Project Name: SOLASUNA Hotel Location: Yukuhashi City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan Design Team: axonometric Total Floor Area: 853.40 m² Completion: November 2023 Photography: YASHIRO PHOTO OFFICE, REPOSHA Yuta Nishino Feature: Project - Within a beachfront park in Nagai-hama, Yukuhashi City, Fukuoka Prefecture, architectural firm axonometric has created SOLASUNA, an innovative hotel project. This 853.40-square-meter structure ingeniously resolves the boundary between public and private space, serving as a catalyst for revitalizing this once-thriving but later declined coastal area. The design team, guided by the concept of "gentle integration between park and hotel," creatively expanded the existing wooden walkway into a three-dimensional form, creating a massive stepped structure that envelops the entire building. The most striking feature of this design is its multifunctionality: the steps not only serve as a natural circulation path connecting guest rooms to the sea, but also provide spacious terraces accessible to both hotel guests and park visitors, while simultaneously functioning as a louver system shielding from strong eastern sunlight and moderating views from the park. Viewed from a distance, the entire structure resembles a grand amphitheater facing the ocean. The interior spaces demonstrate a profound understanding of the natural environment, creating fluid transitions between the architecture and the surrounding beachfront park. This two-story steel structure occupies 459.50 square meters within a 5,668.70-square-meter site, successfully balancing the public nature of the park with the privacy of the hotel through its innovative stepped design. What distinguishes SOLASUNA is its creation of a "buffer space belonging to neither park, building, nor nature, yet integrating them all." This transitional zone maintains deliberately fluid and ambiguous identity, making the project not merely occupy its site but transform it, establishing new relationships between public recreation, private accommodation, and natural landscape in a seamless, compelling whole. Design Team - Founded in 2021, axonometric is an innovative architectural design firm based in Fukuoka, led by Principal Architect Kei Sasaki, undertaking diverse projects both within Japan and internationally. Sasaki previously worked at the renowned SOU FUJIMOTO ARCHITECTS, possessing rich professional experience as a first-class architect and guest lecturer at multiple universities. The firm focuses on comprehensive spatial design, with services encompassing architectural design, interior design, furniture design, landscape design, and urban planning. The team consists of a group of talented professionals including Managing Director Kaori Kurakazu, several architects and project managers, who collectively infuse each project with innovative thinking and professional spirit. axonometric's work has received multiple international awards for its unique understanding of space and innovative approaches, including the 2024 DFA Design for Asia Gold Award, Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards (APIDA) Gold Award and Jury's Special Prize, and the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2024 Special Prize. Their design philosophy emphasizes the harmonious coexistence of architecture and environment, balancing practical functionality with aesthetic experience. The firm's growth and expansion reflect its firm commitment to architectural innovation and increasing influence in the industry, bringing new perspectives and possibilities to Japan's contemporary architectural design field. 2023 Previous Next

Partisans | Archicasting

Toronto's Bloor Street has been graced with a stunning architectural marvel that seamlessly blends cutting-edge technology with timeless elegance. Architecture studio Partisans has unveiled a new Rolex boutique that pushes the boundaries of facade design, creating a striking visual landmark in the city's upscale shopping district. The project's standout feature is its undulating limestone storefront, a result of advanced parametric modelling techniques. This sculptural facade wraps the ground floor of an existing high-rise, transforming the streetscape with its fluid, organic forms. The design ingeniously references Rolex's renowned timepieces, with the rhythm of stone columns echoing watch band patterns and curved elements evoking the precision of luxury watchmaking. Partisans' collaboration with computational designer Arturo Tedeschi has yielded a facade that is both aesthetically captivating and technically innovative. The limestone panels, carefully shaped using digital fabrication methods, create a harmonious dialogue between the rigid modernist structure above and the new, dynamic street-level presence. The project exemplifies a renaissance in stone as a contemporary building material. By leveraging 3D scanning and CNC technology, Partisans has achieved unprecedented levels of accuracy in integrating the new facade with the existing architecture. This attention to detail extends to the interface between stone and glass, resulting in a seamless fusion of materials that enhances the overall design coherence. At night, integrated cove lighting transforms the facade into a softly glowing sculpture, further emphasizing its curves and textures. The eastern elevation features an intricately etched parametric composition, adding another layer of visual intrigue to this remarkable architectural achievement. PARTISANS, founded in 2012 by Alex Josephson and Pooya Baktash, has rapidly emerged as one of Toronto's most innovative and boundary-pushing architecture studios.

Project Name: Yellow River National Museum Location: Zhengzhou , China Design Team: gmp Architects Total Floor Area: 100,300 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Marcus Bredt Feature: Project - German architecture firm gmp Architects completed the Yellow River National Museum in Zhengzhou, China, creating a sinuous structure that literally follows the meandering path of the 5,000-kilometer-long river. The project explores not only the river's cultural significance but also its role in shaping the landscape, with both the new museum building and surrounding park tracing the river's course to form a physical and conceptual bridge between nature and civilization. The museum's most striking feature is its seamless integration with the landscape – the green roof extends upward to a 40-meter observation deck, creating a continuous topography that blurs the boundaries between architecture and nature. Winding rooftop paths lead visitors through native vegetation environments, picnic areas, and an open-air theater, offering panoramic views of both the Yellow River to the north and Zhengzhou city to the south. At the building's heart lies a sculptural atrium that can be dramatically enhanced with a cascading water curtain, serving as the light-filled core of the museum experience. The polygonal structure gently rises and falls as it bridges a watercourse within the park, with the crossing point forming the luminous heart of the building. The façade showcases a modular curtain wall system of natural stone with vertical rhythmic texturing that echoes the river's flow patterns. Public zones are punctuated by slender vertical windows that admit natural light, while exhibition spaces are shielded from direct illumination. Three large north-facing windows reference the Yellow River's iconic cave dwellings while framing sweeping landscape views. The main entrance, positioned beneath the building's tallest southern point, appears as a glazed opening carved directly from the massive volume. This cutout impresses with its subtly shimmering yellow-toned brass cladding along the façade and ceiling, which continues on the inside: curved walls resembling eroded rock and softly reflective yellowish ceilings guide visitors into the museum. Located at the heart of the Yellow River National Cultural Park, the museum rises from the rolling riverside landscape in a streamlined form, connecting the surrounding green spaces into a cohesive whole. As an extension of the public park, the museum embodies the profound cultural symbolism of the Yellow River as the cradle of Chinese civilization. Design Team - Founded in Hamburg in 1965 by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg, gmp Architects has evolved into a globally recognized architectural practice with over 50 years of experience in delivering contextually responsive design solutions. The firm operates on a generalist approach across eight international offices in Hamburg, Berlin, Aachen, Munich, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hanoi, tackling projects at all scales from residential developments to urban planning initiatives. gmp's design philosophy centers on four core principles: simplicity, unity in diversity, uniqueness, and structural order. Their approach, termed "designing in dialogue," establishes an interactive methodology between architectural concepts and site-specific parameters. The firm's commitment to functional optimization means buildings are evaluated through programmatic relevance, constructional logic, material appropriateness, and contextual responsiveness. The practice's comprehensive portfolio spans cultural institutions, transportation infrastructure, commercial developments, and sports facilities across all continents. Recent achievements include multiple CTBUH Awards for the CSCEC Science and Innovation Building in Guangzhou and recognition for projects like the Chinese Traditional Culture Museum in Beijing. gmp's holistic sustainability approach prioritizes climate-aware construction standards and adaptive reuse strategies, ensuring long-term architectural relevance beyond temporary stylistic trends. Their dialectical design process transforms ideas into built reality while maintaining sensitivity to environmental contexts and societal requirements. 2025 Previous Next

Feature: Project - Nestled in the verdant landscape of Key Center, Washington, the Longbranch Residence by mwworks is a masterclass in harmonious integration of architecture and nature. This 3,100-square-foot home, completed in 2023, redefines the concept of a rural retreat, seamlessly blending into its forested surroundings while offering a luxurious living experience. The project's most striking feature is its innovative approach to site integration. Rather than dominating the landscape, the residence appears to emerge from it, with a planted roof that extends the ground plane and creates a visual continuity with the surrounding meadow. This green roof not only enhances the home's ecological footprint but has also become a thriving microhabitat for local wildlife. mwworks' design philosophy shines through in the delicate balance between built form and natural elements. The home's structure carefully navigates around existing trees, employing pin piles and grade beams to preserve the forest floor. A bridge-like entrance spans an ambiguous zone between nature and architecture, creating a poetic transition that blurs the boundaries between inside and out. Materiality plays a crucial role in anchoring the home to its context. Raw concrete, dark-stained cedar, and locally sourced Douglas Fir create a palette that resonates with the forest setting. The interplay of solid masses and transparent voids mimics the rhythm of clearings and dense vegetation found in the surrounding landscape. The Longbranch Residence is a testament to thoughtful, site-responsive architecture. It challenges conventional notions of rural living, offering a sophisticated yet understated sanctuary that celebrates its natural setting while providing a comfortable, contemporary home for its occupants and their menagerie of animals. Design Team - mwworks, a Seattle-based architectural powerhouse founded in 2007, has carved out a distinctive niche in the Pacific Northwest's design landscape. Under the visionary leadership of principals Steve Mongillo and Eric Walter, this boutique studio has consistently delivered exceptional residential and commercial projects, earning accolades for their innovative approach to contextual design and sustainable architecture. The firm's design philosophy is rooted in a profound respect for site-specific conditions, materiality, and the art of craftsmanship. mwworks' portfolio showcases a remarkable ability to synthesize client aspirations with environmental stewardship, resulting in structures that are both aesthetically striking and ecologically responsible. Their commitment to sustainability is not merely superficial; it is deeply integrated into their design process, encompassing everything from passive solar strategies to green roof systems and the thoughtful incorporation of recycled materials. Since its inception, mwworks has garnered numerous prestigious awards, including multiple AIA National Honor Awards, affirming their status as industry trailblazers. The 2020 AIA Housing Awards for both the Whidbey Farm and Courtyard House projects underscore the firm's mastery in residential design. Moreover, their recognition as an Emerging Firm by the AIA Northwest and Pacific Region in 2016 highlights their rapid ascension in the architectural realm. mwworks' holistic approach to design extends beyond mere aesthetics, embracing the complexities of building science and environmental performance. Their projects, characterized by clean lines, honest materials, and a seamless indoor-outdoor dialogue, reflect a deep understanding of the Pacific Northwest vernacular while pushing the boundaries of contemporary architecture. As they continue to evolve, mwworks remains committed to creating enduring, livable spaces that resonate with both their inhabitants and the natural world. 3100 ft² Case Inlet, WA, USA 2023 Previous Next

Project Name: Diriyah Art Futures Center Location: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Design Team: Schiattarella Associati Building Area: 12,000 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photographers: Mohamed Somji, Antoine Horenbeek, Hassan Al Shatti, Guido Petruccioli Feature: Project - Nestled on the desert's edge near Riyadh, the Diriyah Art Futures Center emerges as a groundbreaking cultural landmark that seamlessly weaves architectural innovation with the rich historical fabric of the Nejd region. Designed by Italian architectural firm Schiattarella Associati, this 12,000-square-meter complex stands as the Gulf's first museum dedicated to digital arts, embodying Saudi Arabia's ambitious 2030 Vision of cultural transformation. More than just a museum, the center is a sophisticated dialogue between contemporary design and ancient landscape. Strategically positioned adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Diriyah's historic city, the building defies conventional museum typologies. Instead of a compact structure, it unfolds as a series of elongated volumes that horizontally extend across the Hanifa Valley, creating a dynamic interplay of spaces that echo the region's traditional architectural principles. The architects' vision is radical in its approach: to create a building that appears to grow organically from the earth itself. "We wanted the architecture to feel like it emerged from the ground," explains Amedeo Schiattarella. This philosophy translates into a design that respects and responds to its context, with narrow, cooling passages and carefully considered volumes that reconnect urban and agricultural zones. Sustainability is intrinsic to the project's DNA. The center achieves zero waste through intelligent use of local materials and passive design strategies. Utilizing local stones, raw earth, and lime, the building establishes a powerful material continuity with its site. Innovative features like geothermal cooling and rainwater recycling demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship that goes beyond mere aesthetics. The interior is equally compelling. Paola Schiattarella has crafted spaces that blend local materiality with contemporary functionality. From modern interpretations of traditional mashrabiya wooden screens to underground laboratories bathed in carefully choreographed natural light, the center becomes a canvas for artistic exploration and cultural innovation. As a pioneering project under Saudi Arabia's cultural renaissance, the Diriyah Art Futures Center is not just a building—it's a statement. It challenges global architectural homogenization, celebrating instead the unique potential of place, tradition, and forward-thinking design. Design Team - Founded in 1970, Schiattarella Associati has emerged as a groundbreaking architectural practice that transcends conventional design paradigms. Headquartered in Rome, the firm has consistently challenged architectural orthodoxies by exploring the profound relationship between geometric precision and spatial randomness, establishing a unique design philosophy that views architectural voids as fundamental design elements. Led by the visionary trio Amedeo, Andrea, and Paola Schiattarella, the practice has distinguished itself through an experimental approach that transforms each project into a rigorous architectural investigation. Their methodology seamlessly integrates complex geometric principles with dynamic spatial configurations, creating environments that dialogue intimately with their contextual landscapes. With a robust portfolio spanning Europe and the Middle East, Schiattarella Associati has developed a reputation for innovative cultural and public space interventions. The firm's international project experience—including significant commissions in South Korea and recent groundbreaking work in Saudi Arabia—demonstrates their ability to translate local architectural vernaculars into contemporary design languages. Their recent Diriyah Art Futures Center exemplifies their design ethos: a project that emerges organically from its desert context, challenging global architectural homogenization while celebrating site-specific architectural expression. By consistently pushing disciplinary boundaries, Schiattarella Associati continues to redefine architectural discourse in the 21st century. 2024 Previous Next

Client: China Resources Land, Foshan Shunde District Government Feature: Project - In the heart of Shunde, China, the Cloud Egret Wetland Museum emerges as a groundbreaking architectural intervention that masterfully balances human observation with ecological preservation. Designed by Link-Arc Architecture, this 1,800-square-meter structure represents a revolutionary approach to wildlife observation architecture, seamlessly integrating into a habitat that hosts 25,000 egrets. The museum's most striking feature is its composition of four stacked concrete tubes, each precisely rotated to capture optimal viewing angles of the surrounding wetland ecosystem. This innovative design creates what the architects call "viewing frames" at different heights, offering visitors a unique perspective of nature from root level to treetop. The tubes are strategically positioned behind an existing row of dawn redwood trees, allowing the building to virtually disappear into the subtropical forest when viewed from the egret island. The project's origin story adds a compelling layer of significance – it began with a single bamboo grove planted 26 years ago by a local conservationist nicknamed "Bird Uncle," whose dedication transformed the area into an urban sanctuary for egrets. The museum now stands as a testament to this legacy, with the local government expanding the protected area thirteenfold. What sets this museum apart is its sophisticated structural solution. The intersecting concrete tubes create a triangular central atrium through Boolean subtraction, serving as a shared viewpoint where visitors can simultaneously observe multiple perspectives of the landscape. The building's exterior features board-formed concrete using pine wood, creating a natural texture that resonates with the surrounding forest. Perhaps most ingeniously, the roof is covered with lotus pools, effectively camouflaging the building's fifth elevation and further integrating it into the wetland environment. The project exemplifies sustainable architecture through its meticulous attention to tree preservation. After mapping 560 existing trees, the architects carefully positioned and rotated each level to minimize the impact on the natural environment while maximizing optimal bird-watching vantage points. This thoughtful approach to environmental stewardship sets a new standard for ecological architecture, demonstrating how buildings can serve human needs while respecting and enhancing their natural context. Design Team - Studio Link-Arc, established in New York, stands as a distinguished international architectural practice that exemplifies the intersection of global design thinking and contextual sensitivity.

2025 Previous Next

Project Name: The Yard, Dalian Cultural Center Location: Dalian , China Design Team: Neri&Hu Design and Research Office Total Floor Area: 4631 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: DONG Image, Runzi Zhu Feature: Project - Neri&Hu Design and Research Office completed a striking adaptive reuse project in the heart of Dalian, transforming urban industrial heritage through innovative architectural language and thoughtful site integration. The Yard, Dalian Cultural Center converts a 40-year-old chemical research institute compound into a vibrant cultural destination, demonstrating the perfect synthesis of traditional industrial architecture with contemporary design thinking. The compound is strategically positioned near university campuses and software parks, this 4631-square-meter complex captures the innovative spirit of adaptive reuse while paying homage to the region's industrial memory. The project's most distinctive feature lies in its continuous weathering Corten steel system that transforms the original U-shaped building configuration into an enclosed courtyard space, creating a new spatial order through a series of walls, screens and canopies. Neri&Hu's ingenious design solution unifies 6 existing buildings with varying heights and distinct facades. The architects employed Corten steel as the primary surface material, chosen for its industrial relevance and capacity to record the passage of time through weathering processes. This material strategy creates a secondary facade layer that mediates between existing stucco facades and transformed interior spaces, generating architectural poetry through new-old dialogue. The compound's programming encompasses galleries, lifestyle retail, hospitality, cinema, theater, and office space. The former workers' dormitory has been converted into office space, while a small library positioned near the entrance serves the public and surrounding university community. Segmented yet continuous spaces create natural narrative pauses within the circulation path, allowing each functional area to shine within the broader cultural narrative. Most notably, the project transforms what was once an introverted parking lot into a contemplative plaza centered around a large rock feature, drawing inspiration from Chinese garden design principles. This demonstrates how contemporary adaptive reuse can push the boundaries of urban renewal possibilities while respecting historical memory. Design Team - Founded in 2006 by principals Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu in Shanghai, China, Neri&Hu Design and Research Office has established itself as a pioneering force in contemporary Asian architectural practice, consistently bridging rigorous design methodology with cultural innovation technologies. With headquarters in Shanghai, the firm has established itself as a comprehensive interdisciplinary consultancy providing professional design services across diverse building typologies throughout China and the broader international region. • PYR 住宅 Cazú Zegers | Archicasting

Project Name: PYR House Location: Panguipulli, Chile Design Team: Cazú Zegers Project Area: 2,024 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photography: Marcos Zegers Feature: Project - Perched dramatically on the edge of a precipitous landscape in Panguipulli, Chile, the PYR House emerges as a architectural marvel that seamlessly negotiates challenging terrain through innovative design and poetic imagination. Conceived by renowned architect Cazú Zegers, this extraordinary residence transforms topographical constraints into its most compelling design feature, creating a sculptural intervention that dialogues intimately with its rugged natural context. The house's conceptual genesis lies in pyrite—the "stone of home"—which becomes both metaphorical inspiration and structural metaphor. A central geometric staircase, engineered with the cubic crystalline structure of pyrite, vertically connects the property's disparate elevations, from cliff top to lakeside, becoming the architectural spine that articulates the project's spatial complexity. Zegers masterfully addresses the site's challenging solar orientation and forty-foot cliff through a sophisticated three-story volume that appears to emerge organically from the rocky terrain. The lightweight architectural volumes, constructed using a nuanced material palette of metal, wood, and selective concrete, create a dynamic interplay between built form and landscape. Structural ingenuity meets poetic expression in this project, where each floor responds uniquely to its specific land condition. The result is a residential design that transcends conventional architectural boundaries, transforming geographical challenges into opportunities for spatial innovation and sensory experience. The PYR House stands as a testament to Zegers' architectural philosophy—a bold reimagining of how built environments can not just occupy, but truly inhabit challenging landscapes. Design Team - Founded in 1990, Cazú Zegers Architecture Studio has emerged as a transformative force in contemporary architectural practice, distinguished by its profound commitment to creating architecture that intimately dialogues with landscape and cultural context. Led by Cazú Zegers, an architect trained at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV), the studio has developed a unique architectural language that seamlessly integrates built form with the Chilean and Latin American territories. The studio's design philosophy transcends conventional architectural approaches, focusing on a "Low Tech" methodology that prioritizes minimal territorial intervention and a deep respect for natural environments. Zegers' work is characterized by its geopoetic approach, exploring architectural solutions that emerge from a nuanced understanding of place, local materials—particularly wood—and indigenous cultural wisdom. Internationally recognized, Zegers has received prestigious accolades including the Grand Prix of Versailles and the National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World Award. Her practice has been featured in ELLE Decor's Architecture A-List and recognized by Forbes Magazine as a boundary-breaking architectural firm. Currently led by Zegers, the studio continues to push architectural boundaries, emphasizing sustainable design, ethnoarchitecture, and a holistic approach to territorial intervention that respects ecological and cultural ecosystems. 2024 Previous Next

NAP Architects | Archicasting

Nestled on the shores of Lake Poroto in Hokkaido, KAI Poroto emerges as a groundbreaking ryokan that seamlessly blends Ainu culture with contemporary design. Architect Hiroshi Nakamura and NAP Architectural Design Office have crafted a unique retreat that pays homage to the indigenous Ainu people while offering a luxurious hot spring experience. The project's most striking feature is its landscape design, which creates a microcosm of the local ecosystem. Drawing inspiration from the Ainu people's reverence for mem (natural springs), the architects have integrated a miniature version of Lake Poroto's watershed into the site. This innovative approach not only preserves the area's natural beauty but also allows guests to trace the historical path of the Ainu along the waterways. The guest rooms, spanning across the man-made stream, incorporate elements of traditional Ainu dwellings. Central to each space is a low table with indirect lighting, reminiscent of the irori (hearth) found in Ainu chise (houses). This design encourages intimate gatherings and storytelling, echoing the familial bonds of Ainu culture. Perhaps the most striking architectural element is the bathing facility, inspired by the kucha (temporary huts) used by the Ainu during hunting expeditions. These triangular structures, with their distinctive ketunni framework, create a harmonious silhouette against the landscape. The design allows for natural light and ventilation, resulting in an eco-friendly bathing experience that feels both primeval and modern. KAI Poroto stands as a testament to thoughtful, culture-driven architecture, offering guests an immersive journey into Ainu heritage while setting new standards for sustainable luxury in hospitality design. Established in 2002 by Hiroshi Nakamura, the Tokyo-based practice Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP has emerged as a leading voice in organic, contextual design that harmonizes architecture with nature and human experiences. Led today by Nakamura and a team of directors including Soichiro Takai, Naoko Sumitani, Hirotoshi Koizumi, Masaki Hirakawa, Kohei Omori, Tomohiko Kimura, and Sadaharu Aoto, the firm takes a "microscopic" approach that draws inspiration from natural phenomena, human behavior, and emotional responses. Their design philosophy centers on fostering an organic relationship between the built environment, nature, and the human body. Nakamura aims to create "architecture that can only be found there" by thoughtfully responding to the unique regional context - incorporating local history, culture, industry, and materials. In recent years, the firm has looked to the essence of traditional Japanese architecture and garden design to inform their contemporary work. With a staff of 40 architects and designers, Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP offers full services including architectural design, urban planning, product design, strategic consulting, education programs, and research initiatives. Their award-winning projects have been internationally recognized across numerous prestigious competitions and publications. Previous Next
