What began as a modest 50-yearold structure bore witness to tragedy before being reimagined into a contemporary sanctuary that pays homage to its storied past. The architects embraced the challenge of renovating within a tight budget, uncovering a remarkably intact wooden framework with wide, durable floor planks rarely seen today. Relocating the staircase outdoors allowed the former father's office to be repurposed into a striking pool area nested beneath the original resilient concrete arches. Privacy concerns sparked the ingenious inclusion of the sinuous "S" wall - a folding fiber cement partition that gracefully conceals and reveals. This sculptural element delineates space while fostering connectivity, embodying the fusion of old and new that defines the project. Echoing the traditional Thai Taitun design of open-air living areas beneath elevated homes, the downstairs blends nahtreen and outdoor realms in a light-filled setting. Upstairs, the juxtaposition of modern materials against the heritage structure continues in the master suite. The once-dim stairway now forms a luminous core linking floors and blurring indoor/outdoor boundaries. The project is positioned within a naturally rich landscape of pines, rocks, and meadow grass, drawing inspiration from Sweden's harsh climate conditions to create an architectural work that both celebrates Scandinavian building traditions and embodies contemporary design innovation. The project's most compelling design feature lies in its sophisticated response to a challenging 7x7-meter compact footprint—the architects masterfully handled the spatial constraints by extending vertically to 7 meters height, creating dramatic vertical space. Rather than choosing horizontal expansion, the architecture embraces vertical potential, creating a building that layers upward with the height, generating two staggered levels that each provide unique spatial experiences while maintaining seamless connection through a massive room-width bookshelf system. The building's form strategically opens toward the south and east, optimizing exposure to natural daylight and maximizing views of the surrounding forest and fields. This 630-square-meter residence employs a longitudinal design that maximizes views of the surrounding protected areas with their unique regional flora. The house is meticulously organized into three independent program blocks: The social block integrates the living room, dining area, and kitchen with the outdoors through retractable glass windows, transforming the space into a large veranda overlooking the pool and solarium; the master bedroom block includes the master bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, with a study room and atelier on the upper floor, each offering opposing views; the third block accommodates additional bedrooms (for the owners' daughters), guest rooms, and service areas, organized over two levels with front and rear property views. These three blocks are connected by a central circulation axis with levels offset by half-flights of stairs. This innovative arrangement means that from the pool level, only half a flight of stairs is needed to reach either the lower or upper levels. The design creates partially sunken lower-level bedrooms that offer a more comfortable and diverse ambiance compared to the upper-level accommodations, while the intermediate-level social block provides expanded views and convenient access.
