The Shell Home in Malibu, designed by Binishells Inc., is a groundbreaking architectural project that challenges conventional construction methods and reimagines sustainable living. This 6,500 square foot residence, completed in 2022, showcases an innovative approach to design and building technology that could revolutionize the industry. At the heart of the Shell Home's design is a unique 'Form Finding Functionality' that utilizes air pressure to create an asymmetrical thin shell structure. This method not only expedites construction but also results in a sculptural living space that seamlessly blends with its surroundings. The sinusoidal silhouette of the building emerges organically from the landscape, offering flowing interiors framed by generous organic openings that maximize views and natural light. The construction process employs a reusable pneumatic formwork, inflated to a specified pressure, onto which steel reinforcement and concrete are applied. This technique significantly reduces material waste, labor requirements, and construction timelines while producing a more resilient and environmentally friendly structure. The Shell Home's dual-curvature, monolithic envelope boasts impressive structural efficiency and adaptability. Made from low-carbon geopolymer concrete, it contains less than half the embodied energy of a traditional building of similar size. The thermal bridge-free design and superior insulation contribute to a remarkable 65% reduction in energy use. This project not only pushes the boundaries of architectural expression but also sets a new standard for sustainable and resilient design, offering a glimpse into the future of construction across various scales and programs. Founded over 60 years ago by Dr. Dante Bini, Binishells has established itself as a pioneer in innovative construction technologies. 2023 Previous Next
Villa Beusi Calvi Ceschia Viganò architetti associati | Archicasting
Project Name: Villa Beusi Location: Sanremo, Italy Design Team: Calvi Ceschia Viganò architetti associati Total Floor Area: 250 m² Completion: 2021 Photography: Aldo Amoretti Feature: Project - In the heart of Italy's agricultural landscape, Villa Beusi represents a radical environmental recovery that transforms a concrete wasteland into a harmonious dialogue between architecture and nature. This 250-square-meter single-family home achieves a perfect balance between land regeneration and architectural restraint through meticulous design. The project's most distinctive feature is its rigorous approach to land reclamation. The design team thoroughly transformed what was once a concrete platform cluttered with asbestos-covered sheds, returning 87% of surfaces to their natural state while reconstructing only 25% of the original building volume. This significant reduction creates an exemplary case of architectural restraint. The architectural design is intentionally simple, respecting the typological characteristics of surrounding buildings. The single-story structure establishes a harmonious relationship with the landscape through a sequence of volumes of varying depths. At the entrance, the building volume narrows and is traversed by open pathways, ensuring permeability with the landscape and retreating from the roof to create covered transition spaces. The landscape design employs a graduated approach to vegetation, becoming increasingly structured as one approaches the residence. Beginning with Mediterranean scrub, it progresses to open-air cultivations, olive groves and orchards, a garden of aromatic herbs serving the residence, and "filter" green areas with climbing plants that soften elevation changes and allow for the planting of new trees. Every detail of Villa Beusi is minimal and deliberately understated, occasionally allowing for subtle refinements through skilled craftsmanship—for example, achieving visual continuity between the exposed concrete exterior and the wooden ceiling interior. The project demonstrates how architectural design can restore environmental balance and create human habitats that coexist harmoniously with nature. Design Team - Calvi Ceschia Viganò architetti associati was born from friendship, shared ideas, and the awareness that uniting three individual architectural paths into a common vision would extend everyone's perspective. The firm was founded by Marco Calvi, Gaetano Ceschia, and Andrea Viganò, each bringing over thirty years of research and work experience. The firm's design philosophy views city and territory as collective and plural facts, expressions of a community's public values, while architecture is seen as an individual and singular moment, based on each person's particular vision. They carefully resolve the implicit contradictions between these through precise design solutions. Operating as a flexible design collective, Calvi Ceschia Viganò functions as a general contractor in the design realm, coordinating bespoke professional teams tailored to each project's specific requirements. This adaptable organizational structure allows the practice to address projects of various scales and typologies with precision and contextual sensitivity. Their multidisciplinary team includes architects, engineers, urban planners, and interior designers who collaborate to develop comprehensive design solutions. This integrated approach enables the firm to negotiate the complex relationships between public and private values, historical continuity, and contemporary expression that characterize their award-winning architectural works throughout Italy and France. Through projects like Villa Beusi, Calvi Ceschia Viganò demonstrates their ability to create spaces that both respect the environment and are architecturally expressive, setting new standards for contemporary architectural practice. 2021 Previous Next

2024 Previous Next
IKAWAYA Architects | Archicasting
Project Name: Strolling Gardens & House Location: Eastern Japan Design Team: IKAWAYA Architects Total Floor Area: 688.93 m² Completion: May 2024 Photography: Michikado Mishima Feature: Project - In a residential area of eastern Japan, the "Strolling Gardens & House" stands out for its innovative design approach. Situated on an irregularly shaped plot, IKAWAYA Architects responded to this challenge by creating a living experience that seamlessly integrates nature with daily life. The core concept of the building is "stacking gardens in multiple directions," creating garden spaces of varying sizes at different levels and orientations, allowing residents to continuously experience nature throughout their daily activities. Rather than designing one large monolithic structure, the architects chose to break the house into multiple "small boxes" cleverly arranged along the irregular site boundaries. This solution not only adapts to the site constraints but also harmonizes with the scale of the surrounding residential area, avoiding visual imposition on the neighborhood. This composition creates a rich spatial sequence, forming a unique circulatory experience. Residents can experience variations between openness and privacy as they move through different spaces, with each area offering different dwelling possibilities that meet the diverse living needs of the family. This circulatory design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese strolling gardens but reinterprets them for contemporary living. The façade design reflects the diversity of interior spaces, with carefully placed windows and courtyards creating a dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. Handcrafted materials and tactile surface treatments emphasize the connection to nature, creating a warm and textured environment. The architects' attention to detail is evident at every junction and turn, demonstrating a commitment to craftsmanship. "Strolling Gardens & House" exemplifies how seemingly restrictive site conditions can be transformed into unique design advantages. Here, gardens are not merely decorative elements but central components of the living experience, prompting residents to recognize themselves as part of natural cycles. The project successfully balances practical requirements of contemporary living with the desire for natural experiences, creating a family environment that is both avant-garde and intimate. Design Team - IKAWAYA Architects was established by Atsushi Ikawa in 2017 and has grown to become one of Japan's most innovative architectural practices. Born in Osaka in 1980 and raised in Gifu, Ikawa completed his Master's program at Tokyo Metropolitan University in 2004, followed by formative experience at Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP architectural office. Currently, the IKAWAYA team consists of 8 professionals providing comprehensive services including architectural design, interior design, landscape planning, and project supervision. The firm is known for its keen understanding of spatial experience and clever integration of natural elements, with works often showcasing fluid spatial sequences and rich material expressions. IKAWAYA's design philosophy emphasizes architecture that responds to both emotional and physiological needs of users, creating environments that are both practical and poetic. They view architecture holistically, carefully considering how each detail affects the quality of the living experience. The firm has received numerous awards for excellence in design, including the 2024 DFA Design for Asia Silver and Bronze Awards, the 2023 Modern Living Grand Prize, and the JID Award. Ikawa himself has been serving as a Visiting Professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University since 2021, continuing to influence and nurture the next generation of architects. Through projects like "Strolling Gardens & House," IKAWAYA Architects demonstrates its unique ability to create architectural works that both respond to local environments and meet the demands of modern living, representing the forefront of contemporary residential design in Japan. 2024 Previous Next
Project Name: Sani House Location: Amami City, Japan Design Team: Ono Ryosuke Architecture Total Floor Area: 118.91 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Hasegawa Kenta Feature: Project - Located at the northern tip of Amami Oshima in Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture, Sani House by Ono Ryosuke Architecture represents an innovative vacation rental concept. This 118.91-square-meter project, positioned directly facing the ocean and surrounded by pandanus windbreak forests, emerges as a compelling example of contextually responsive design that reinterprets traditional forms. The project's most distinctive feature is its modern reinterpretation of Amami Oshima's traditional "dohyo" (sumo ring) structural system. The design team ingeniously substituted reinforced concrete walls for traditional large log columns to support square wooden truss roofs, preserving traditional forms while addressing the scarcity of large timber on the island. The spatial organization is equally remarkable, with a spacious central earthen floor area at its core and small private rooms and wet areas positioned in the four corners, creating a clustered arrangement reminiscent of the island's traditional multi-building residences. Each small room and bathroom features direct outdoor access, perfectly accommodating oceanfront activities. Perhaps most innovative is the project's dual functionality, serving both as a vacation rental and as a showroom where visitors can experience the building materials sold by the client. The reinforced concrete walls not only serve structural functions but also provide necessary resilience against frequent typhoons, eliminating the need for bracing and load-bearing walls in the wooden sections, thus creating unobstructed spaces with large oceanfront openings. Through these innovative elements, the design team has crafted a space that respects local traditions while exploring contemporary architectural possibilities. Sani House transcends its role as a conventional vacation home to become an architectural mediator between past and present—a place that rediscovers and reconnects the architectural heritage of Amami Oshima with contemporary possibilities. Design Team - Ono Ryosuke Architecture was founded in 2018 as an Amami Oshima-based architectural practice by principal architect Ryosuke Ono, after completing his education at Yokohama National University and gaining experience in Tokyo. The firm's methodology centers on reinterpreting traditional typologies through contemporary structural and material approaches, creating architecture that is simultaneously innovative and deeply rooted in place. Under Ono's leadership, the design team focuses on creating architecture that responds thoughtfully to its environment while exploring the intersection between vernacular traditions and modern design solutions. The practice's portfolio demonstrates exceptional spatial sensitivity and contextual awareness, encompassing residential, commercial, and hospitality typologies. Projects like Sani House exemplify the firm's masterful manipulation of space, structure, and form, with designs that preserve traditional essence while presenting distinctly contemporary qualities. In just a few years since its inception, Ono Ryosuke Architecture has received numerous accolades, including the 2022 Good Design Award, Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) Excellence in Architecture Selection 2022 Top 100, and Japan Spatial Design Award 2022 Gold Prize (Residential Category). The firm continues to advance its vision of connecting tradition with modernity, creating deeply regional spatial experiences through thoughtful design. 2024 Previous Next

The design approach centers around the "iron" used in cooking, creating a continuous spatial narrative woven with iron elements. A custom iron emblem emblazoned with the restaurant's initial "Y" was developed, utilizing the local cast iron craft tradition. These 3D curved emblems, mass-produced from 3D printed molds, adorn lighting fixtures, tabletops, the logo, and wine displays, unifying the brand identity throughout. The existing building underwent major structural reinforcement, with a large void carved out above the open kitchen. Guests can enjoy the chefs' choreography while circulating through a sequence of public and private dining areas, experiencing contrasting scenes of rustic Bengala red earth walls and vivid indigo blue waterproofed areas. Exterior iron frames juxtaposed with glass and stone hint at the iron-infused interiors. Open kitchen lighting, framing, railings, and balustrades all manifest iron's presence. By interweaving culinary and material narratives, the design crafts an immersive yakitori dining experience that celebrates transformation through fire and iron. The 45,000-square-metre structure stands as a translucent ceramic-clad cube beside the scenic Jiulong Lake, serving as the cultural heart of Nanchang's rapidly developing South New City district. The building's most distinctive feature is its innovative facade system - a delicate "veil" of China White ceramic louvers that draws inspiration from the region's celebrated rice porcelain tradition. This sophisticated exterior envelope, engineered through advanced structural modeling and supported by steel cables, creates a dynamic interplay between interior and exterior spaces while providing practical solar shading. Housing a 1,600-seat opera hall, a 450-seat multipurpose venue, and a cultural centre, the complex is organized around a central public passage that functions like a traditional Chinese street. This thoroughfare not only connects the building to its surroundings but also animates the space with cafes, exhibitions, and events throughout the day. The interior spaces showcase a thoughtful material palette that combines tradition with innovation. The performance venues are clad in fireproof stained bamboo, with the main opera hall featuring organically shaped, acoustically optimized surfaces inspired by Jiulong Lake's rippling waters. This careful attention to materiality extends throughout the project, where bamboo and terracotta finishes create warm, tactile environments. Sustainability is integrated into every aspect of the design, from the ceramic facade's passive cooling properties to rooftop solar collectors and rainwater harvesting systems. Completed in 2024, the Nanchang Grand Theatre represents a sophisticated fusion of cultural symbolism, environmental consciousness, and architectural innovation, establishing itself as a new paradigm for contemporary performing arts venues in China. Design Team - Founded in 1968 by Professor Pekka Salminen in Helsinki, PES-Architects has established itself as one of Finland's most internationally acclaimed architectural practices. Under Salminen's visionary leadership, the firm has garnered worldwide recognition for its innovative approach to complex architectural challenges, particularly in performance venues and cultural facilities. The practice's portfolio demonstrates exceptional versatility across typologies, from the award-winning Fuzhou Strait Culture and Arts Center - recipient of the prestigious China Civil Engineering Zhan Tianyou Award - to the technologically advanced Helsinki Airport Terminal expansions. Their work is characterized by sophisticated material applications, as evidenced in their pioneering use of ceramic systems and sustainable design solutions. Project Name: House in Nakaimachi Location: Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan Design Team: Masaya Suzuki Architects Lead Architect: Masaya Suzuki Building Area: Main Building: 100.48 m² Annex: 25.15 m² Total Floor Area: 125.63 m² Site Coverage: Main Building: 53.00 m² Annex: 25.15 m² Total Site Area: 165.50 m² Structure Type: Wooden Construction Stories: Main Building 2 floors, Annex 1 floor Project Team: Structural Design: KMC (Lead: Ken Kamachi) Landscape Design: Hashiuchi Garden Design (Lead: Tomoya Hashiuchi) Construction: Takewaki Housing Construction Co., Ltd. (Lead: Takuya Takewaki) Project Timeline: Design Period: October 2022 - October 2023 Construction Period: October 2023 - July 2024 Completion Date: July 2024 Photography: Kenichi Suzuki Feature: Project - Japanese architecture firm Masaya Suzuki Architects has unveiled a striking residential project in Matsudo, Chiba, that reimagines the relationship between interior and exterior spaces through a sophisticated interpretation of traditional Japanese design principles. The House in Nakaimachi comprises a two-story main building and a single-story annex, thoughtfully arranged around a central courtyard that serves as the project's beating heart. This spatial configuration creates what the architects describe as a "primordial living space" that responds intuitively to human comfort and environmental conditions. The project's most distinctive feature is its innovative approach to spatial flexibility. The ground floor is divided into four distinct zones - the North, Outside, Middle, and South spaces - each designed to serve multiple functions depending on the time of day, weather conditions, and family needs. Large sliding glass doors can be fully opened to transform interior spaces into semi-outdoor areas, creating a seamless flow between the built environment and nature. "Contemporary houses often prioritize airtightness and security at the expense of environmental connection," explains Masaya Suzuki. "We wanted to challenge this trend by creating spaces that actively engage with natural elements - wind, light, sound, and scent." Positioned on an elevated site overlooking a cherry blossom park, the house maximizes its privileged location through carefully considered sightlines and natural ventilation pathways. The architects maintained identical frontage dimensions for both buildings while keeping them compact, resulting in an intriguing spatial composition that appears to flow continuously from the street-facing annex to the main house. This project represents a thoughtful response to modern living requirements while maintaining a deep connection to traditional Japanese architectural values of flexibility, natural harmony, and spatial efficiency. Design Team - Founded in 2016 by Masaya Suzuki, MASAYA SUZUKI ARCHITECTS has established itself as a distinctive voice in contemporary Japanese architecture, specializing in creating spaces that engage with human sensory perception. Based in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, the practice has developed a sophisticated approach to residential and commercial architecture that emphasizes the invisible yet crucial elements of architectural design. The firm's design philosophy centers on what Suzuki terms "perceptual architecture" - a methodology that carefully considers light, wind, scent, sound, and temperature as fundamental design elements. This approach stems from Suzuki's extensive background, including his formative years at Chiba University's Urban Environment Systems department and his master's studies at Kyoto University of the Arts under the mentorship of renowned architect Yasushi Horibe. Currently led by Masaya Suzuki (Principal Architect, First-Class Registered Architect No.348026), the studio has garnered recognition through various awards, including the 2020 Matsudo City Landscape Encouragement Award. The practice maintains a focused team structure, allowing for intimate involvement in each project, from initial conception through to completion. The firm's portfolio demonstrates a consistent commitment to creating timeless architecture that transcends trending styles, instead focusing on spaces that resonate with fundamental human sensibilities. Their work spans residential, commercial, and institutional projects, each characterized by thoughtful integration of natural elements and spatial efficiency. 2024 Previous Next
STUDIO YY | Archicasting
In the heart of Tokyo's Chiyoda district, the Suido-bashi Office by STUDIO YY architects Yuichi Tanaka and Takeshi Nakamoto reimagines the traditional office building typology. Conceived during the Covid-19 pandemic with startups in mind, the trapezoidal site yields an innovative rectangular office floor plan extended by a triangular "work terrace." This ingenious terrace expands the functionality of the workspaces, allowing for casual meetings, laptop use, and refreshment breaks outside the confines of the standard office. Its design deftly balances efficiency demanded by tenant offices with an open, comfortable environment conducive to productivity. But the terrace is more than just amenity space - it's a conscious urban gesture. As the Chuo-Sobu train line passes by, carrying tens of thousands daily, the architects envisioned the work terrace activating the building's facade with the sight of people collaborating, conversing, and enjoying their labor. In this way, the Suido-bashi Office connects the interior work experience to the surrounding cityscape. In a post-pandemic era where remote work has gained traction, STUDIO YY has created a model for the future workplace - one that values community, cross-pollination of ideas, and integration with the energies of the city around it. Established in 2015, STUDIO YY has swiftly emerged as a tour de force in the architectural realm, spearheaded by the visionary duo of Yuichi Tanaka and Takeshi Nakamoto.
In the heart of Tokyo's Minato ward, "House in Aoyama" by Keiji Ashizawa Design Studio emerges as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of art, furniture, and architectural space. This four-story concrete residence, commissioned by art and furniture connoisseurs, redefines the concept of a modern urban dwelling. The design's most striking feature is its meticulous consideration of the interplay between artworks, furnishings, and spatial elements. Ashizawa's team went beyond conventional proportions and placement, focusing on intricate details that complement the clients' sophisticated collection. The result is a living gallery where every corner is curated to enhance the dialogue between art and architecture. Innovative use of concrete finishes sets this project apart. The exposed interior concrete surfaces, ranging from ribbed ceilings to textured walls, were carefully selected to harmonize with the artworks and furniture. This approach challenges the notion that modern art requires white walls, instead creating a rich, tactile backdrop that elevates the entire living experience. Privacy and light management are ingeniously addressed through strategically placed balconies with lush plantings and a louvered façade. These elements, combined with cleverly positioned skylights, ensure ample natural illumination without compromising the inhabitants' seclusion in the bustling urban setting. Keiji Ashizawa Design, founded in 2005 by Keiji Ashizawa, has established itself as a pioneering multidisciplinary design studio in Tokyo's vibrant architectural landscape. Feature: Project - Nestled in the verdant landscapes of rural Ontario, the Forest Retreat House by Kariouk Architects redefines the concept of a contemporary Canadian homestead. This impressive 10,300 square foot residence, completed in 2021, serves as a spacious sanctuary for a family seeking to reconnect with their roots and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region. The project's most striking feature is its expansive copper-clad roof, which extends for 60 meters and follows the site's topography. This tent-like structure not only provides a visual anchor for the home but also creates a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. The architects have masterfully balanced modern design principles with a sense of warmth and intimacy, avoiding the sterile box-like forms often associated with contemporary architecture. Sustainability and environmental consciousness are at the forefront of the design. The house is strategically positioned on an existing cleared hilltop, preserving the surrounding 100 acres of forest, meadows, and wetlands. This approach not only minimizes the project's ecological impact but also transforms the homeowners into custodians of the local ecosystem. The interior layout promotes family togetherness, with an open-plan design that encourages interaction while still providing private spaces. A dramatic suspended volume housing the children's bedrooms adds an element of architectural intrigue, accessible via a catwalk that traverses the home's central space. By incorporating locally sourced materials and celebrating craftsmanship, the Forest Retreat House offers a contemporary interpretation of rusticity that honors Canada's rich architectural heritage while embracing modern sustainable technologies. Design Team - Founded in 2001, Kariouk Architects has established itself as a dynamic force in the architectural landscape of Ottawa and beyond. Led by Principal Architect Paul Kariouk, who transitioned from New York City to Ottawa, the firm has cultivated a reputation for bespoke, client-centric design solutions that defy stylistic pigeonholing. Kariouk Architects' portfolio is a testament to their versatility and innovative approach. This tailored methodology has garnered the firm numerous accolades, including a National American Institute of Architects Award and a New York American Institute for Architecture Merit Award. The firm's commitment to sustainability is evident in their multiple Canada Wood Council Awards, while their ranking among the Top Five Small Offices internationally by Architizer underscores their global impact. Kariouk's design philosophy is rooted in rigorous exploration and in-depth client engagement, embracing constraints as catalysts for creative solutions. NAP Architects | Archicasting
Nestled on the shores of Lake Poroto in Hokkaido, KAI Poroto emerges as a groundbreaking ryokan that seamlessly blends Ainu culture with contemporary design. Architect Hiroshi Nakamura and NAP Architectural Design Office have crafted a unique retreat that pays homage to the indigenous Ainu people while offering a luxurious hot spring experience. The project's most striking feature is its landscape design, which creates a microcosm of the local ecosystem. Drawing inspiration from the Ainu people's reverence for mem (natural springs), the architects have integrated a miniature version of Lake Poroto's watershed into the site. This innovative approach not only preserves the area's natural beauty but also allows guests to trace the historical path of the Ainu along the waterways. The guest rooms, spanning across the man-made stream, incorporate elements of traditional Ainu dwellings. Central to each space is a low table with indirect lighting, reminiscent of the irori (hearth) found in Ainu chise (houses). This design encourages intimate gatherings and storytelling, echoing the familial bonds of Ainu culture. Perhaps the most striking architectural element is the bathing facility, inspired by the kucha (temporary huts) used by the Ainu during hunting expeditions. These triangular structures, with their distinctive ketunni framework, create a harmonious silhouette against the landscape. The design allows for natural light and ventilation, resulting in an eco-friendly bathing experience that feels both primeval and modern. KAI Poroto stands as a testament to thoughtful, culture-driven architecture, offering guests an immersive journey into Ainu heritage while setting new standards for sustainable luxury in hospitality design. Established in 2002 by Hiroshi Nakamura, the Tokyo-based practice Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP has emerged as a leading voice in organic, contextual design that harmonizes architecture with nature and human experiences. Espinoza Carvajal Arquitectos | Archicasting
2025 Previous Next
