Project Name: Sagehaus Office Garden Location: Jakarta, Indonesia Design Team: RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + architecture) Total Floor Area: 2000 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Mario Wibowo Feature: Project - Sagehaus Office Garden is a specialized office for athletic sportswear products located in West Jakarta, designed by RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + architecture). This project aimed to resolve the paradox of balancing two objectives: maintaining a flexible and creative blank canvas of possibilities on one hand, and providing a secure and efficient learning and working environment on the other. The design strategy creates three visually connected horizontal zones: a public space for combined creative and social activities below, effective and controlled office environments in the middle, and a flexible public garden activity on the rooftop above. Sagehaus Office is a "Dome for Wind," a reversed carved space designed to channel and intensify Jakarta's gentle breezes through shaded, sheltered gathering and social spaces, creating a pleasant and safe environment for all staff activities. The enclosed breezeways between the blocks are designed for maximum comfort and interaction, offering spaces for groups of various sizes to engage and relax. This wind-directing design has proven to be both successful and extremely comfortable, providing constant cooling breezes despite Jakarta's high humidity. Meanwhile, the rooftop is designed as a large recreational green roof and office gym. The design sought to integrate architectural strategies that ensure efficient energy performance while establishing the building's character. The public space at the core of the site was treated as a carved monolith to provide sufficient thermal mass. Simultaneously, the design of the staircases serves as a focal point, encouraging use and providing a viable alternative to elevators. In terms of the facades, large openings were carved to minimize direct heat from the sun while still allowing ample natural light through the "slices and punctures" of the facade. All recessed and indirect openings were carefully designed to avoid direct solar radiation and, consequently, the greenhouse effect. From a user functionality perspective, the mixed-use design conceals a high-security file room at the deep center, surrounded by flexible open-plan workspaces, and flanked by a series of mini to large meeting rooms, with a foyer pocket garden and casual spaces in between. This layout fosters short connections within each floor, facilitating movement from conventional desks to meeting rooms, lounges, and leisure spaces within the building, all designed with democratic access and subtle variations across different levels. A consistent feature throughout all floors is that services and restrooms are located in separate wings, designed as garden toilets to ensure optimal comfort in a tropical context while minimizing energy consumption. Design Team - RAD+AR (Research Artistic Design + architecture) is an Indonesian based group of architects, designers, and thinkers operating within the field of design practice, architecture, urbanism, research and development which focus to bring the idea of Architecture as an art of utilizing space in most provocative to utopian-research based approach. Formed from the curiosity of the advancement of Tropical Architecture by Antonius Richard Rusli, RAD+AR believes that in order to shape a better and more sustainable version of today's challenges, architecture can profitably be one of the most worth-exploring field. RAD+AR explores and experiments to redefine the value of architecture in both globalization and localization. Beyond spaces and building, it connects history, narrative of cultures, expanding beyond limits of what we call architecture. Collaboration of multidisciplinary at each portfolio through systematic integration, allow RAD+AR to always innovate and experiments. 2025 Previous Next

2025 Previous Next
- Villa Sipat & Sauh Arkana Architects | Archicasting
2025 Previous Next

Project Name: China Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka Location: Yumeshima Island, Osaka, Japan Design Team: Native Design Research Center Building Area: 3,509 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Li Ji, Arch-Exist Design Features: Project - Native Design Research Center created the China Pavilion at the 2025 Osaka World Expo, covering 3,509 square meters as one of the largest foreign self-built pavilions at the event. Inspired by the concept of "Chinese Bamboo Scrolls," the architectural design integrates culturally rich symbols such as bamboo, Chinese characters, and ancient scrolls. By re-imagining bamboo slips—an ancient medium of information—through the lens of today's digital age, the pavilion narrates China's millennia-long history, showcases its ecological civilization advancements, and embodies the theme of "Building a Shared Future for Life: Green Development for Tomorrow's Society." The project's most distinctive feature lies in its sophisticated spatial choreography. Rather than creating conventional exhibition halls, the architects employed a gradually unfolding spatial motif of bamboo scrolls, transforming the elongated site into a captivating, garden-like exhibition route. Visitors are guided through winding spaces that shift in height, light, and scenery, evoking the subtle elegance of Eastern aesthetics. Themed exhibitions unfold sequentially, creating a dynamic journey reminiscent of a majestic landscape scroll. Located in the core area of the Expo site, the China Pavilion faces a major road to the south and neighbors the central landscape area, "Serene Forest," to the west. The pavilion's western facade features slender grille curtains resembling bamboo screens. Behind these curtains lie bamboo-lined paths, while beyond them, trees sway gently. This interplay creates an Eastern garden ambiance, allowing visitors to interact with the "Serene Forest" through the veiled layers, experiencing the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature central to Eastern philosophy. The "bamboo scroll" concept transcends mere facade design—it shapes form, implies function, defines materials, and conveys culture. In ancient China, bamboo slips were vital carriers of knowledge; today, they symbolize a bridge between tradition and the information revolution. The pavilion's "Chinese Bamboo Scrolls" evolve from small to monumental scales, flat to three-dimensional forms, literal to abstract expressions, and static facades to immersive depths. This progression mirrors civilizational advancement, transitioning from transmitting traditional textual information to disseminating contemporary electronic data, embodying a journey from history to the future. In terms of material selection, the pavilion's design and construction prioritize green sustainability. Initially planned as a modern bamboo structure using domestically produced bamboo scrimber, it shifted to steel due to local regulations and timeline constraints. However, bamboo remains the primary cladding material, chosen for its short growth cycle, high carbon absorption, biodegradability, flexibility, and low thermal conductivity. Translucent polycarbonate panels and membrane ceilings on the roof mimic rice paper, filtering natural light into the space. Gaps between bamboo walls allow breezes and sunlight to permeate, fostering interaction between exhibitions and the environment while merging architectural space with thematic content. As a temporary Expo structure, the pavilion adopts fully modular and prefabricated construction, ensuring efficiency, quality, and ease of post-event dismantling and reuse. This approach avoids energy-heavy darkened halls and enhances eco-efficiency, demonstrating the pavilion's commitment to sustainable development throughout the entire process from concept to construction. - 75.9 House Omer Arbel | Archicasting
Feature: Project - In the idyllic setting of a Canadian Pacific Northwest hayfield, architect Omer Arbel's latest residential masterpiece, 75.9, emerges as a groundbreaking fusion of innovative design and organic architecture. This family home showcases Arbel's pioneering approach to concrete construction, featuring monumental 'lily pad' columns that serve as both structural elements and sculptural focal points. The project's defining feature lies in its unique concrete pouring method, a technique invented by Arbel's studio. This process involves stretching fabric between lightweight plywood ribs arranged radially, resulting in organic, free-form shapes that challenge traditional notions of concrete architecture. The columns, treated as if they were archaeological ruins, form the conceptual foundation around which the rest of the house is built. Arbel's design seamlessly integrates the structure with its natural surroundings. Four double-height volumes, constructed from glass and cedar wood, house the living spaces, while connecting passages are covered by the lifted hayfield, creating a harmonious blend between architecture and landscape. The rooftop supports magnolia trees planted in the hollow tops of the columns, further blurring the lines between built form and nature. Inside, the home offers a cinematic experience of domestic life, with columns of varying heights and positions creating dynamic spatial narratives. The interplay of rough concrete finishes, polished floors, warm timber elements, and lush indoor gardens results in a rich, textural environment that is both contemporary and timeless. Design Team - Omer Arbel Office (OAO), founded in 2003, stands at the vanguard of contemporary architectural design, blurring the boundaries between architecture, sculpture, and industrial design. Led by the visionary Omer Arbel, this Vancouver-based atelier has cultivated a unique approach to spatial and material exploration that has garnered international acclaim. OAO's portfolio is characterized by a rigorous investigation into the intrinsic properties of materials, resulting in innovative architectural solutions and sculptural lighting designs. The firm's methodology is rooted in process-driven experimentation, often yielding unexpected and groundbreaking results. This is exemplified in their pioneering work with concrete forming techniques and their exploration of glass as a medium for spatial articulation. Arbel's multidisciplinary background informs the practice's holistic approach to design, seamlessly integrating architecture, product design, and artistic installations. The firm's projects, ranging from bespoke residences to large-scale public interventions, demonstrate a masterful manipulation of form, light, and space. OAO's sister company, Bocci, founded concurrently in 2005, serves as a platform for realizing Arbel's innovative lighting designs. Indiesalon | Archicasting
Feature: Project - In the vibrant Seongdong district of Seoul, a former retail space has undergone a transformative metamorphosis into an immersive haircare sanctuary that transcends conventional notions of product merchandising. Envisioned by the ingenious minds at Indiesalon, the LADOR Seongsu Store beckons customers into a multisensory experience that elevates haircare into an indulgent art form. The heart of this architectural marvel is the striking "bath cube" – a sculptural centerpiece that pays homage to LADOR's brand identity. Clad in a soothing sky blue hue, this striking installation houses an inviting bathtub brimming with scented bubbles, enticing visitors to immerse themselves in the brand's aromatic world. Beyond this captivating focal point, the space unfurls into a series of thoughtfully curated vignettes. The signature "oasis table," with its sinuous curves and integrated product displays, guides customers on a seamless journey of discovery. Meanwhile, opulent lounge booths exude an air of European sophistication, transporting patrons into a realm of indulgent pampering. But the true genius lies in the subtle yet ingenious interplay between indoor and outdoor realms. An alfresco shower area tantalizes passersby, drawing their gaze inward and enticing them to embark on a transformative haircare odyssey that blurs the boundaries between retail and experiential refuge. Design Team - Founded in 2013, Indiesalon is a Seoul-based spatial design studio that derives its ethos from the convergence of two philosophical cornerstones – the 'Indie Spirit' rooted in creativity and autonomy, and the 'Salon,' a forum for cultural discourse. This duality manifests in their approach, which champions free thinking and open communication as conduits to insightful spatial interpretations and implementations. Under the guidance of founder and principal architect Seokjoon Jang, Indiesalon's multidisciplinary team, comprising designers Wona Kim, Seonghyun Hong, and Jisu Kang, alongside management support lead Sayup Kwon, orchestrates immersive spatial experiences that transcend mere physicality. Their design narratives foster a symbiotic exchange between built environments and the multifaceted cultures they aim to celebrate. With a portfolio spanning retail, hospitality, and residential realms, Indiesalon's prowess lies in crafting spaces that ignite dialogue, nurture communities, and serve as catalysts for shared cultural explorations. Their collaborative approach and commitment to design integrity have solidified their reputation as vanguards in Korea's architectural landscape. Previous Next

< 返回 THE LUC LIFESTYLE Atelier Generations Vasudeva Design 项目名称:THE LUC LIFESTYLE 地点:巴厘岛,印度尼西亚 设计团队:Atelier Generations Vasudeva Design 建筑面积:2500 m² 竣工时间:2023年 摄影:Indra Wiras 设计特色: THE LUC Lifestyle将当代建筑与巴厘岛本土特质相融合,在仓古打造了一座2500平方米的商业中心,重新定义了这一海滨区域不断演变的身份认同。 2023 Previous Next
Chiasmus Partners | Archicasting
Project Name: Rosemary Cafe Location: Seongnam City, South Korea Design Team: Chiasmus Partners Total Floor Area: 570 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Namsun Lee Feature: Project - Nestled beside the Daewang Reservoir in Seongnam, South Korea, the Rose Mary Cafe by Chiasmus Partners emerges as a poetic architectural statement that dissolves boundaries between built form and natural landscape. Completed in 2024, this 570-square-meter project comprises two distinct buildings ingeniously connected by a central staircase that functions as both physical and conceptual bridge. The cafe's most striking feature is its DNA-like spiral structure that organically connects four interior spaces across two floors, plus rooftop areas. This innovative spatial organization creates a continuous flow between the legally separated buildings, resulting in six interconnected zones that each frame distinctive views of the surrounding environment. Chiasmus Partners, led by architects Hyunho Lee, Chika Nomura, and James Wei Ke, have masterfully employed curved geometries throughout the design. The facade's sweeping curves maximize exposure to the panoramic vistas of Daewang Reservoir and the forested Inreungsan Mountain backdrop. These curves continue seamlessly from exterior to interior, creating pavilion-like spaces that appear to float within the landscape. The architectural envelope features three layers of curved balconies stacked vertically, complemented by crystal glass curtain walls that reflect the transparent qualities of water and evoke the layered fog that often shrouds the surrounding mountains. This material strategy creates a constantly changing dialogue between the building and its setting as light conditions shift throughout the day. Inside, curved ceilings mirror the exterior's fluid forms, while columns appear to flow downward from above, creating a cohesive spatial experience. By maintaining material continuity between inside and out, the architects have achieved a sense of singular, unified space despite the building's complex organization. Conceived as a leisure destination where visitors can experience nature from an elevated perspective, Rose Mary Cafe strips away unnecessary functional elements to create contemplative spaces that prioritize the surrounding landscape. The result is an architectural pavilion that serves as both frame and canvas for experiencing the natural beauty of its setting. Design Team - Chiasmus Partners was founded in New York in 2005, with current offices in Seoul and Beijing. This international architectural firm is led by three principal partners: Hyunho Lee, Chika Nomura, and James Wei Ke, with a design team that includes talented professionals such as Yeongwoo Son and Seongyeol Lee. The firm focuses on various types of architectural projects, encompassing cultural facilities, educational institutions, commercial developments, and residential projects. Their representative works include the Kyunghee University Campus Masterplan (Space21), the IFEZ Arts Center in Incheon, and numerous award-winning residential projects. Hyunho Lee is qualified with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and currently serves as the Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Hongik University, while being a partner at Chiasmus Partners since 2006. Chika Nomura holds Japanese architectural qualifications and has been a partner at Chiasmus Partners since 2017, also serving as an adjunct professor at Hongik University's College of Architecture and Urban Planning. James Wei Ke has been a partner at Chiasmus Partners since 2006 and previously worked as a senior designer at Atelier FCJZ in Beijing. Chiasmus's design methodology is built on rigorous investigation of each site's inherent qualities, resulting in architectural solutions where form and content become inseparable expressions of function and meaning. The firm has received numerous honors, including the 2018 Architecture Master Prize, the 2018 World Architecture Award, and nomination for the 2022 Dezeen Award. They believe in the magical ability of architecture to preserve, transform, and intensify the essential qualities of places and human experience. Their work resonates with both contemporary design discourse and timeless architectural principles. 2024 Previous Next
BIG | Archicasting
2026 Previous Next
- SA住宅 73.Onze Arquitetura | Archicasting
Project Name: SA House Location: Trancoso, Brazil Design Team: 73.Onze Arquitetura Total Floor Area: 1,094.55 m² Completion: 2023 Photography: OKA Fotografia Feature: Project - In the idyllic setting of Trancoso, southern Bahia, the SA House by 73.Onze Arquitetura stands as a masterful example of contemporary Brazilian residential architecture that respects and enhances its natural surroundings. Completed in 2023, this 1,094-square-meter residence seamlessly balances sophistication with regional sensitivity through its thoughtful composition of volumes, materials, and spatial relationships. Led by architect Julia Regis Bittencourt, the design responds ingeniously to the site's flat topography and dense native vegetation. Rather than imposing upon the landscape, the house engages in a constant dialogue with it. The strategic organization of two perpendicular volumes preserves existing rubber and ingá trees while simultaneously framing views toward the condominium's common green space. What distinguishes this project is its clever articulation of social and private spaces through contrasting architectural elements. The single-story bedroom wing features a flat green roof that serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, housing technical equipment while providing thermal insulation. This volume stands in deliberate contrast to the two-story main block with its more traditional pitched roof, creating a dynamic visual tension throughout the composition. Permeability defines the spatial experience, with retractable glass panels dissolving boundaries between interior and exterior living spaces. The architecture employs a sophisticated system of wooden brises-soleil that perform multiple functions: providing privacy, controlling solar gain, and casting ever-changing patterns of light and shadow that animate the spaces throughout the day. The interior design, also developed by Bittencourt's studio, mirrors this thoughtful approach by juxtaposing clean contemporary lines with local craftsmanship. A restrained palette of white surfaces and burnished cement flooring serves as a neutral backdrop for warm earth tones and carefully selected handcrafted pieces that root the dwelling in its cultural context. Through its nuanced response to climate, topography and local materials, SA House achieves that elusive quality of seeming both boldly contemporary and deeply contextual – a residential sanctuary that celebrates the unique character of coastal Bahia while providing a sophisticated framework for modern living. Design Team - 73.ONZE Arquitetura e Design is an architectural practice established between São Paulo and Trancoso, founded in 2018 by Bahian architect Julia Regis Bittencourt. With previous experience at renowned firms such as Superlimão and Paula Neder Arquitetura, the firm's architectural style combines simple elements with meticulous attention to detail. The firm's dual-location strategy represents a conscious synthesis of seemingly opposing contexts: the restorative qualities of Trancoso's natural landscape with São Paulo's contemporary urban dynamics. This geographical duality infuses their portfolio with a unique spatial sensibility that responds to both environmental and metropolitan imperatives, resulting in increasingly sustainable built interventions. The office was born from the fusion between Trancoso and São Paulo, combining the well-being provided by nature with the urban lifestyle, meeting contemporary demands and seeking to create increasingly sustainable buildings. 73.ONZE specializes in developing customized residential, commercial, and corporate projects, each tailored to the style and needs of each client. From conception to realization, they prioritize functionality and ethics, adapting architecture uniquely for each individual or brand. Under Bittencourt's leadership, the studio has cultivated a distinctive architectural language characterized by volumetric clarity, material authenticity, and environmental responsiveness. Their work consistently demonstrates a commitment to crafting personalized spatial experiences that thoughtfully balance pragmatic considerations with poetic expression, establishing 73.ONZE as an emerging force in Brazil's evolving architectural landscape. 2025 Previous Next

Project Name: BLOK House Location: Quebec City, Canada Design Team: Quinzhee Architecture Total Floor Area: 59 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Adrien Williams Feature: Project - Quinzhee Architecture has created BLOK House at the top of Mount Le Maelstrom in Lac-Beauport, Quebec, as an ideal retreat tailored specifically for climbing enthusiasts. This 59-square-meter structure, located at the summit of a natural climbing wall, provides the perfect refuge for climbers. The design team has crafted a monolithic volume with angular edges through asymmetrical forms and gray stucco materiality, cleverly evoking the form of a climbing block. Irregularly arranged openings on the façade resemble climbing holds, creating a surface that guides the gaze and ascent like a climbing route. Within this square plan, heated indoor spaces coexist with sheltered outdoor areas, both increasing the living space and providing an immersive experience in nature. Entering through the truncated corner of the volume, visitors first discover the protected outdoor spaces, sheltered from harsh weather and prying eyes. On the ground level, climbing walls allow climbers to practice their sport, while a spa invites relaxation between training sessions. The upper-level terrace provides a convivial space for cooking and sharing meals while contemplating the surrounding natural landscape. The heated spaces of BLOK House also extend across multiple levels. At ground level, bedrooms enjoy the calm and intimacy of the surrounding forest. The upper-level living spaces benefit from abundant light and unobstructed landscape views. A spacious mezzanine above the kitchen accommodates additional guests. All spaces are clad in wood, creating a harmonious visual continuity between interior and exterior living areas, while contrasting with the raw, mineral character of the building's envelope. BLOK House is not merely a shelter but a celebration of climbing culture expressed through architectural form. This building functions simultaneously as destination, refuge, and sculptural intervention in the landscape, demonstrating Quinzhee Architecture's ability to perfectly blend functional requirements with poetic design inspiration. Design Team - Founded in 2013 by architect Guillaume Fafard, Quinzhee Architecture is a firm embodying the characteristics of its namesake snow shelter: playful, ecological, and Nordic in style. Currently led by Fafard alongside senior architect Catherine Parent, the practice has developed a distinctive design approach that seamlessly integrates client participation into the design process. The firm's methodology places communication and idea-sharing at the forefront, considering these elements essential foundations for innovative, high-quality architectural solutions. By engaging all stakeholders in deliberations about building occupation and environmental context, the practice effectively evaluates the full spectrum of possibilities before identifying optimal design strategies. Quinzhee's portfolio demonstrates remarkable versatility, spanning multiple scales from residential and commercial architecture to urban planning, furniture design, and even ski fabrication. This deliberate cross-disciplinary approach fuels their creative vision and distinguishes their practice within the architectural landscape. With multiple team members holding Passive House Designer certifications, demonstrating the firm's commitment to sustainability, Quinzhee approaches each commission with environmental consciousness and technical precision. The practice values creative experimentation while maintaining pragmatic solutions that respond to client objectives. Though headquartered in Limoilou, Quebec, Quinzhee's operational reach extends well beyond the metropolitan area, embracing projects across diverse contexts. Their only prerequisite for taking on new challenges remains consistent: the opportunity to conceptualize projects through an alternative lens that challenges conventional architectural thinking. 2024 Previous Next

The clients acquired an adjacent plot near their daughter's primary school, envisioning a dwelling where their family of three could live comfortably while embracing work-from-home lifestyles. The underground floor hosts the husband's study and wife's atelier, offering focused spaces for hobbies and professions. The first floor houses the bedrooms and a compact wet area, while the expansive second floor public room encourages family gatherings. Indirect lighting and an angled ceiling create an intimate ambiance in this double-height living space. A standout feature is the slatted timber ceiling inspired by hipped and gabled roofs, through which a pentagonal skylight filters natural light. The reflected rays produce a beautiful gradient effect across the striped woodwork. Cleverly, storage, kitchen, bathroom, and elevator functions are housed along cantilevered side walls below wind-resistant beams topped with cove lighting for evening atmosphere. The lower ceiling over the dining and cooking zones establishes an appealing contrast with the soaring living room volume. Exuding compact luxury, Le49II allows independent family members to express their individuality in sublime private spheres while connecting under one roof. Ryota Sekiya Architecture | Archicasting
Feature: Project - "Oji House" in Aichi prefecture creates a sense of psychological privacy within a dense neighborhood of similar homes. Seeking to provide a refuge for family life, architect Ryota Sekiya eschewed visual barriers in favor of ambiguous relationships with the surroundings. Manipulating the angles of the walls along four axes obscures perceptions of orientation. The suburban site comprises small, adjoining properties of around 200 sqm. Clients desired spaces and times belonging solely to the family, free of watching eyes. Physical seclusion was possible but Sekiya pursued the liberating effect of losing directional awareness. The home feels unmoored from cardinal points, simultaneously "there" yet unrecognized. The composition overlays rectilinear volumes with diagonal walls and ceilings. Skewed grids displace the expected adjacencies, making the precise locations of neighbors' houses uncertain. As human spatial senses rely on visual references, distorting these cues liberates perception. Varied textures accentuate shifting light and shadow, underscoring sunlight's passage through three courtyards and two open volumes. Though initially disorienting, this freedom sensitizes occupants to the sun's daily movement, linking them to natural rhythms. A rich domesticity emerges as one appreciates the atmospheric qualities of different areas over morning, afternoon and evening. Design Team - Founded in 2015, Ryota Sekiya Architecture creates bespoke homes that support owners' lifestyles in Japan and beyond. Led by principal architect Ryota Sekiya, the Nagoya-based firm brings extensive experience from over 100 residential projects. Offering integrated services from planning to construction, Ryota Sekiya Architecture tailors each commission through close collaboration. Sekiya’s background at a leading housing company enables streamlined delivery of clients’ aspirations. Subsequent work for architectural firms and contractors honed sensitivity to materials and detailing. This holistic approach placed Ryota Sekiya Architecture among an elite group of winners at the 15th Architecture Competition. Blending functionality with atmospheric qualities, the studio realizes buildings as reflections of owners’ values. It construes architecture as a means of enrichment rather than asset creation. Designs emerge from probing discussion to crystallize essentials like natural light over universal principles. Bespoke solutions prove that cherishing family bonds transcends fashion. Sensitively connecting residents to their environment, it homes become treasured backdrops for life’s meanings. 2023 Previous Next
Peter Ryan Architects | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Spink St. Office Building, a remarkable addition to the leafy bayside suburb of Brighton, has been meticulously crafted by Peter Ryan Architects. Commissioned by Align Property Partners, this speculative office development stands as a testament to innovative design and contextual sensitivity. Nestled between the Nepean Highway and the Sandringham rail line, the triangular project site has been transformed into a four-story office haven, crowned with a rooftop terrace that offers breathtaking views of Port Philip Bay and the Melbourne CBD. Targeting a niche market where tenants seek generous floorplates, flexible spaces, and abundant natural light, the architects have embraced a refined domestic aesthetic, aligning with high-end residential developments. The building's form responds thoughtfully to its context, separating pedestrian and vehicle access. The lobby entrance and café connect seamlessly with the surrounding footpaths and bike trails, while the car parking facilities are strategically located adjacent to Nepean Highway, ensuring a harmonious coexistence with the urban fabric. Reflecting the planning overlays' call for a Key Landmark Redevelopment, the project's scale soars to five stories, with vertical sides simplifying and strengthening the building's volume. The patterned precast concrete façade on the south elevation continues the façade articulation, responding to the adjacent mixed-use concrete developments. Overcoming challenging site constraints through innovative structural solutions, Peter Ryan Architects has delivered a high-quality office space that seamlessly blends functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability, setting a benchmark for suburban commercial developments. Design Team - Founded in 2015, Peter Ryan Architects has swiftly established itself as a formidable force in the architectural realm, punching well above its weight with a lean team of just eight members. Under the astute leadership of Peter Ryan, this close-knit practice exemplifies the notion that size is no barrier to excellence. As Ryan succinctly puts it, "We're a small firm that acts like a large one. You don't need a large team to deliver a large project. You require a smart and efficient one." This philosophy resonates profoundly in the words of Ben Spooner, Managing Director of Caribbean Park: "Peter has this ability to work with everyone in our team. It's considerably more than designing a project. He carries everything through from the design phase through to the final delivery. He understands us, and like us, he's extremely structured and focused. He knows these buildings are designed and built to last for generations." Eschewing the practice of outsourcing, Peter Ryan Architects takes immense pride in its comprehensive in-house capabilities, seamlessly integrating visual documentation, planning, and implementation. Their diverse portfolio spans large-scale commercial projects, office buildings, hotels, warehouses, logistical facilities, childcare centers, and exquisite garden pavilions, each a testament to their unwavering commitment to design excellence and commercial pragmatism. Previous Next
Project Name: Aranya Jinshanling Wilderness Botanical Garden Location: Chengde City, Hebei Province, China Design Firm: STUDIO YUDA Area: 199 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photographer: Liu Songkai Feature: Project - STUDIO YUDA has completed the Aranya Jinshanling Wilderness Botanical Garden, a contemplative concrete and timber structure nestled within the rugged landscape of Chengde, China, that serves as both an educational facility and a sanctuary for native plant species. The 199-square-meter building, completed in 2024, emerges from its mountainous context as a sophisticated interplay between architectural intervention and natural wilderness. The design team, led by Guo Yuchen, Yang Siqi, and Zhan Bodi, has crafted a space that deliberately blurs the boundaries between built form and organic environment. "The project's core mission was to create a space that doesn't merely display nature but actively participates in its preservation while fostering a deeper human connection with the wilderness," explained the architects. The building's most striking feature is its U-shaped layout, which wraps around a central courtyard. Floor-to-ceiling windows have been strategically positioned to capture natural light and create dynamic shadow play with interior plantings, while the relocated northern entrance guides visitors through a carefully choreographed journey past monolithic rocks and indigenous vegetation. The two-story structure houses an exhibition space on the ground floor, while the upper level – distinguished by its generous height and abundant skylights – functions as a workshop space for botanical education and craft activities. This vertical programming creates a narrative journey from observation to active engagement with nature. Materials were chosen for their ability to age gracefully and complement the surrounding landscape. Raw concrete pathways and structural elements provide a contemporary counterpoint to ancient stone formations, while methadone pine boards and reclaimed timber introduce warmth and tactility to the interior spaces. Perhaps most notably, the project demonstrates remarkable restraint in its detailing. The architects have eschewed decorative elements in favor of allowing the inherent beauty of materials and natural light to define the space, creating what they describe as "a sanctuary where wilderness is not merely observed but experienced as an integral part of daily life." Design Team - STUDIO YUDA, established in 2016 with dual headquarters in Shanghai and Nashville, is an emerging multidisciplinary design practice that has rapidly gained recognition for its innovative approach to architectural design, landscape architecture, interior design, and installation art. The firm was co-founded by four visionary architects: Guo Yuchen, Zhan Bodi, Yang Siqi, and Alex Darsinos, who collectively bring diverse international perspectives to their practice. The studio's design philosophy is deeply rooted in the exploration of spatial narratives through materiality, chromatic composition, and tectonic expression. Their work demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the dialectic between ephemerality and permanence in architectural discourse, consistently pushing the boundaries of contemporary design while maintaining a profound respect for context and human experience. Operating across various scales and typologies, STUDIO YUDA has developed a distinctive portfolio characterized by its thoughtful integration of form, function, and phenomenological considerations. The practice's commitment to experimental design methodologies, coupled with rigorous attention to construction detailing, has established them as an influential voice in China's emerging architectural scene. Based in Shanghai's historic Xuhui District, the studio continues to expand its practice through a collaborative approach to design, fostering dialogue between Eastern and Western architectural traditions. 2024 Previous Next

Visa's striking new Building in San Francisco's Mission Rock neighborhood takes inspiration from California's iconic natural landscapes. Designed by Henning Larsen, the 13-story tower is a centerpiece of the new mixed-use development, establishing it as a place to work, live, and play. The building's ruggedly sculpted white facade evokes the basalt rock formations found in Yosemite National Park's Devils Postpile. Carved into smaller bays, the faceted precast concrete captures shifting light and shadows, giving the monolithic volume an ever-changing appearance befitting its waterfront location. "Drawing inspiration from the geologic formations of Yosemite, our design distills these influences into a 'neighborhood' scale by carving the massing into smaller bays, evoking the charm of San Francisco's traditional neighborhoods," explained Daniel Baumann, Partner and Design Director at Henning Larsen. The carved massing creates a dynamic formal expression from street level, reminiscent of the city's famous topography. Outdoor terraces wrap the tower from the second to fifth floors, crowned with wind-sheltered rooftop gardens offering views of the San Francisco skyline and bay. Part of the larger Mission Rock development by Tishman Speyer and the San Francisco Giants, the Visa building establishes an architectural centerpiece anchoring the new 28-acre neighborhood with residences, offices, parks and amenities. Founded in 1959 by Danish architect Henning Larsen, the eponymous firm has carved out a reputation for masterfully blending daylight into their designs - earning Larsen himself the moniker "the master of light."
Designed by architect Kei Ihara of TA+A, the Kuraha Dental Office in Tokyo's Minato ward reimagines the traditional clinical experience. Situated within a robust brick building fronting a distinctive five-way intersection, the architects subverted expectations by "throwing the waiting area onto the street." The polygonal floor plan reflects the intersection's multifaceted character, eschewing dead ends to create a fluid transition between spaces. Interior walls rendered in textured plaster abstractly echo the exterior brickwork, blurring boundaries between inside and out. Kuraha seamlessly integrates with the surrounding cityscape, embracing its role as an extension of neighborhood life. Carefully considered details strengthen the clinic's dialogue with its context. Grey flooring evokes asphalt roads, while pavement-inspired bench seating allows reconfiguration during consultations. By retaining an "openness to the city," the design challenges the introspective nature often associated with healthcare facilities. The architects' deft multifaceted approach counterbalances this inward tendency, fostering a symbiotic relationship where Kuraha's interior mirrors the vibrant intersection beyond its walls. This interplay elevates the humble dental clinic into an immersive urban experience. Founded in 2014 by Kei Ihara, TA+A is an acclaimed Tokyo-based architectural practice driven by the pursuit of "architecture that generates subsequent events." Over the past decade, the firm has created a diverse portfolio spanning various building typologies, with a recent emphasis on cultivating "gentle publicness" - an ethos that seamlessly intertwines architecture with the urban fabric. Under the leadership of Ihara and Director Takahiro Iida, TA+A's approach transcends mere physical structures. Their designs encapsulate the allure of semi-rural locales, foster long-term viability through business acumen, and forge emotional attachments by reinterpreting existing landscapes. This nuanced understanding manifests in delicate interventions that ripple outward, enriching cityscapes. Beyond architectural design, TA+A undertakes branding initiatives and conceptualizes operational frameworks, translating a site's societal and economic values into tangible, value-generating propositions through client dialogue. With unwavering professionalism, the firm articulates visions that transcend generations, solidifying its position as a vanguard of contemporary Japanese architecture. Previous Next

Acclaimed Chinese architecture firm AND Studio has completed the striking Tibetan Thangka Art Museum, a contemporary celebration of Buddhist art and local culture in Lhasa. Nestled at the foot of the sacred Penbu Mountain, the museum's boldly sculpted volumes pay homage to the iconic stepped architecture of the nearby Potala Palace. The six interconnected structures cascade down the mountain slope, inviting visitors on an ascent through staggered outdoor plazas that frame impressive views of hanging Thangka paintings displayed on towering walls. A central "wind tower" featuring a dual-skin curtain wall naturally ventilates the interior while evoking the region's vernacular. Inside, a network of exhibition halls are crisply detailed with textured concrete walls reinterpreting traditional Tibetan stone masonry techniques. Skylights filter diffuse daylight into the galleries, which are primarily illuminated by artificial lighting calibrated for displaying the intricate Buddhist artworks. Deeply rooted in context yet confidently modern in expression, the Tibetan Thangka Art Museum deftly transcribes historical building forms and cultural symbolism into an inspiring contemporary architectural statement. AND Studio's respectful synthesis of past and present creates an inspiring space to experience the ancient spiritual art of Thangka painting. Founded in 2014, AND Studio emerged from the minds of young architects Duccio Cardelli and Ning Wang over a Parisian cafe conversation.
