  • 〇 IGArchitects | Archicasting

2025 Previous Next

Project Name: NAGARAMI RESORT SOSA Location: Sosa City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan Design Team: Hiroyuki Shinozaki & Associates, Architects Total Floor Area: 476.48 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Nakamura E, Hiroyuki Shinozaki & Associates Feature: Project - Situated behind sand dunes in Japan's Chiba Prefecture, NAGARAMI RESORT SOSA by Hiroyuki Shinozaki & Associates, Architects represents an innovative hospitality concept. This 476.48-square-meter resort development emerges as a compelling example of contextually responsive design that honors the primordial landscape while creating a distinctive architectural experience. The project's most distinctive feature is its "cruciform wall" system, which ingeniously divides the vast 1.2-hectare site into different zones rather than pursuing conventional high-rise construction to capture ocean views. This thoughtfully designed cross-shaped wall arrangement creates a series of gardens varying in size and degree of openness, enabling visitors to experience the primordial richness within the austere environment of sand, open sky, and wilderness. The roof design is equally remarkable, with square roofs positioned at wall intersections creating sophisticated divisions between interior, semi-exterior, and exterior spaces. This design reflects the project's goal of deeply integrating modern architectural language with the natural environment. Perhaps most innovative is the resort's spatial organization, with each area comprising one main building, two ancillary buildings, four gardens, and seven rooms, divided into four primary zones. This arrangement ensures the privacy required of a hotel while simultaneously creating a subtle shared experience, allowing different visitors to collectively experience the same natural phenomena. Through these innovative elements, the design team has crafted a unique environment that guides visitors to move between different times and orientations using the cruciform walls as reference points, experiencing the changing nature. NAGARAMI RESORT SOSA transcends its role as a conventional resort facility to become a genuine environmental mediator—a place that enables people to deeply sense the temporality and landscape of the earth, honoring the present while connecting to the eternal. Design Team - Hiroyuki Shinozaki & Associates, Architects was founded in 2009 as a Tokyo-based architectural practice by principal architect Hiroyuki Shinozaki, after completing his education at Tokyo University of the Arts and gaining experience at Toyo Ito & Associates. The firm's methodology centers on spatial clarity, material honesty, and a profound understanding of the relationship between built form and human experience. Under Shinozaki's leadership, the current design team—including key members Yuki Masuda, Takuya Tani, and Frans Jonathan—continues to push the boundaries of contemporary Japanese architecture. The practice's portfolio demonstrates remarkable versatility, encompassing residential, commercial, cultural, and educational typologies. Projects like NAGARAMI RESORT SOSA exemplify the firm's masterful manipulation of space, light, and form, with designs characterized by rigorously rational planning methodologies that nonetheless yield poetic spatial compositions. In over a decade since its inception, Hiroyuki Shinozaki & Associates has received numerous accolades, including the Maronie Architecture Grand Prize of Tochigi Prefecture (2020) and the Tokyo Architects Association Housing Architecture Award (2013). The firm continues to advance its vision of "architecture for all," creating spaces that elevate everyday human experience through precise, thoughtful design. 2024 Previous Next

SANAA | Archicasting

Project Name: MUJI Daikanyama Location: Tokyo, Japan Design Team: SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa) Design Team Members: Junko Tanase, Mano Yagi, Miku Naganuma, Zhang Jiaqi Design Collaboration: Ryohin Keikaku Design Supervision Collaboration: HiP (Junji Minamino, Yuki Watanabe) Floor Area: 498.24 m² Apparel Section: 268.76 m² Household Goods Section: 229.48 m² Completion Date: October 2024 Lighting Design: Quilt Planning (Shozo Toyohisa, Harunobu Izumo) Construction: Nisso Kogei (Hironori Iwasaki) Furniture: Sankyo Tateyama (Masaki Kumode, Noriki Kakinuma, Keiko Yamakawa) HVAC: Kando (Makoto Furuya) Plumbing: Kando (Takehiko Takada) Electrical: Power Source (Ken Ide) Feature: Project - In the heart of Tokyo's trendy Daikanyama district, SANAA architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa have transformed MUJI's flagship store into a revolutionary retail space where products themselves become the architecture. The project, completed in October 2024, represents a radical rethinking of retail design, where merchandise transcends its commercial role to become an integral part of the interior design. The flagship store is split into two distinct spaces: an apparel section facing the street and a household goods area set slightly back. The most striking feature of the apparel space is an innovative ceiling grid system of suspended rings, from which clothing hangs as if floating in mid-air. This ethereal display method allows garments to be viewed from multiple angles, creating an almost theatrical experience where clothes become kinetic sculptures in space. In the household goods section, SANAA has developed a compelling spatial narrative by turning three walls into floor-to-ceiling shelving units, with only the street-facing facade remaining transparent. This arrangement transforms the displayed products into architectural elements that define the space itself. The central area becomes a carefully curated stage where selected items are presented for closer inspection, encouraging a more intimate interaction between customers and products. Both spaces feature generous glazing that dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, creating a dynamic visual relationship with the street. This transparency allows passersby to observe not just the products, but also the choreography of shoppers moving through the space, turning the retail experience into a kind of public performance. The project's genius lies in its ability to elevate MUJI's philosophy of simplified, quality living through architectural expression. With ceiling heights of 4,275mm in the apparel section and 3,925mm in the household goods area, SANAA has created volumes that feel both monumental and intimate, demonstrating how thoughtful spatial design can transform everyday shopping into an extraordinary experience. Their designs often feature ultra-thin structural elements, seamless glass expanses, and meticulously crafted details that challenge traditional architectural hierarchies. The firm continues to influence global architectural discourse through their rigorous exploration of space, light, and human experience, maintaining their position at the forefront of contemporary architectural practice. 2024 Previous Next

2026 Previous Next

One Plus Partnership | Archicasting

Project Name: Gaoxingli Insun Cinema Location: Haikou, China Design Team: One Plus Partnership Lead Designers: Ajax Law & Virginia Lung Area: 6,000 m² Completion Year: 2024 Photographer: Jonathan Leijonhufvud Feature: Project - One Plus Partnership has unveiled a cinematic landmark in Haikou, China, where sculptural brick formations and undulating surfaces create an immersive architectural narrative inspired by the city's maritime context. The 6,000-square-metre Gaoxingli Insun Cinema reimagines the conventional movie theatre typology through a sophisticated interplay of materiality and form. Rather than defaulting to predictable oceanic blues, the design team, led by Ajax Law and Virginia Lung, opted for an unconventional approach to maritime references. The studio utilized brick – a material derived from sand – as the primary design element, creating a conceptual link to Haikou's coastal identity while maintaining a warm, earthy palette throughout the space. The cinema's most striking feature is its dynamic brick installations, which have been meticulously arranged to simulate wave patterns visible from multiple vantage points. These architectural waves cascade through the public spaces, transforming into functional elements such as countertops and seating arrangements. The innovative use of brick extends beyond mere aesthetics – each piece is deliberately sized and positioned to create rhythmic variations in the surface texture. Natural light, typically avoided in cinema design, becomes a crucial design element as carefully positioned windows allow sunlight to interact with the textured brick surfaces. This interplay is complemented by concealed lighting systems that highlight the architectural undulations while serving practical safety purposes. The auditoriums further develop the maritime concept through unconventional material choices. The first features dimensional fabric treatments that create wooden-like textures, while the second employs panels in warm hues reminiscent of tiger lilies. Both spaces incorporate curved elements that echo the wave motif established in the public areas. What sets this project apart is its ability to balance bold design gestures with functional considerations. The flowing forms and material choices serve dual purposes – creating an engaging visual narrative while addressing practical concerns such as visitor safety and circulation. The result is a cinema that transforms the movie-going experience into an architectural journey that begins long before the first frame appears on screen. Design Team - Founded in 2004, One Plus Partnership has established itself as a pioneering force in spatial design, particularly renowned for their revolutionary approach to cinematic environments. Under the visionary leadership of co-founders Virginia Lung and Ajax Law, the Hong Kong-based practice has garnered an impressive portfolio of 660 international accolades, cementing their position in the global design arena. The studio's design philosophy centers on phenomenological spatial experiences, characterized by bold volumetric interventions and materiality-driven narratives. Their portfolio spans diverse typologies, including retail environments, hospitality spaces, and commercial interiors, with a particular expertise in cinema architecture that has redefined the contemporary movie-going experience. Virginia Lung's achievements include the prestigious Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year Award and multiple Best of Best Awards in the Iconic Design Awards. Ajax Law, recognized as one of JCI Hong Kong's Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 2014, brings technical precision and innovative spatial solutions to the practice. The firm's methodology emphasizes thematic exploration through iterative design processes, resulting in spaces that transcend conventional interior architecture. Their work is distinguished by its tectonic expressions, spatial choreography, and the successful integration of narrative elements into built form, exemplifying their commitment to pushing the boundaries of experiential design. 2024 Previous Next

Designed by LJL Architects for a family seeking respite from typical apartment living, the three-story residence divides into distinct zones catering to parents, children, and shared communal space. Strategically positioning the main volume along the southern road shields the interior courtyard and its majestic persimmon tree from sightlines. This north-facing outdoor room connects the ground floor living spaces and captures panoramic views of Namsan Mountain. Rather than over-ornamentation, the monolithic brickwork massing projects the program to the exterior, with horizontal windows offering glimpses of surrounding urbanity. Inside, voids between floors enhance vertical connectivity, while the double-height living room acts as the home's nexus - linking parents, children, and nature. Terraces and courtyards interject throughout provide ample opportunity for the children's play and activity. Rift House demonstrates LJL Architects' adeptness at sculpting space, form, and light in response to clients, site, and context. The resulting residence artfully balances privacy, community, and views within the dense urban fabric of Yongsan-gu. • reDEW 别墅 Splyce Design | Archicasting

In a stunning revival of West Coast modernism, the reDEW House in West Vancouver stands as a testament to thoughtful architectural renovation. This 5,900 sq ft beachfront residence, originally designed by Daniel Evan White in 1969, has been meticulously reimagined to honor its roots while embracing contemporary living. The project's most striking feature is its return to architectural authenticity, stripping away years of misguided renovations to reveal the home's true character. The exposed heavy timber post and beam framing now takes center stage, creating a rhythmic dialogue between structure and space that spans the entire length of the house. A masterful interplay of old and new defines the design. The introduction of a suspended steel staircase serves as a lightweight counterpoint to the robust timber framework, delicately hovering over the main entry and dining area. This juxtaposition of materials and forms exemplifies the project's commitment to harmonizing original elements with modern interventions. The renovation prioritizes the site's ocean views, with carefully positioned living spaces that transition from intimate north-facing rooms to expansive south-facing areas. Large sliding doors blur the boundary between interior and exterior, extending the living space onto a generous patio, deck, and pool area. The upper floor showcases a luxurious primary suite where every element, from the custom-designed bed to the strategically placed bathtub and shower, is oriented to capture breathtaking water vistas. This thoughtful approach to spatial planning ensures that the home's privileged location is fully appreciated from every vantage point.

Feature: Project - Nestled in the verdant landscape of Key Center, Washington, the Longbranch Residence by mwworks is a masterclass in harmonious integration of architecture and nature. This 3,100-square-foot home, completed in 2023, redefines the concept of a rural retreat, seamlessly blending into its forested surroundings while offering a luxurious living experience. The project's most striking feature is its innovative approach to site integration. Rather than dominating the landscape, the residence appears to emerge from it, with a planted roof that extends the ground plane and creates a visual continuity with the surrounding meadow. This green roof not only enhances the home's ecological footprint but has also become a thriving microhabitat for local wildlife. mwworks' design philosophy shines through in the delicate balance between built form and natural elements. The home's structure carefully navigates around existing trees, employing pin piles and grade beams to preserve the forest floor. A bridge-like entrance spans an ambiguous zone between nature and architecture, creating a poetic transition that blurs the boundaries between inside and out. Materiality plays a crucial role in anchoring the home to its context. Raw concrete, dark-stained cedar, and locally sourced Douglas Fir create a palette that resonates with the forest setting. The interplay of solid masses and transparent voids mimics the rhythm of clearings and dense vegetation found in the surrounding landscape. The Longbranch Residence is a testament to thoughtful, site-responsive architecture. It challenges conventional notions of rural living, offering a sophisticated yet understated sanctuary that celebrates its natural setting while providing a comfortable, contemporary home for its occupants and their menagerie of animals. Design Team - mwworks, a Seattle-based architectural powerhouse founded in 2007, has carved out a distinctive niche in the Pacific Northwest's design landscape. Under the visionary leadership of principals Steve Mongillo and Eric Walter, this boutique studio has consistently delivered exceptional residential and commercial projects, earning accolades for their innovative approach to contextual design and sustainable architecture. The firm's design philosophy is rooted in a profound respect for site-specific conditions, materiality, and the art of craftsmanship. mwworks' portfolio showcases a remarkable ability to synthesize client aspirations with environmental stewardship, resulting in structures that are both aesthetically striking and ecologically responsible. Their commitment to sustainability is not merely superficial; it is deeply integrated into their design process, encompassing everything from passive solar strategies to green roof systems and the thoughtful incorporation of recycled materials. Since its inception, mwworks has garnered numerous prestigious awards, including multiple AIA National Honor Awards, affirming their status as industry trailblazers. The 2020 AIA Housing Awards for both the Whidbey Farm and Courtyard House projects underscore the firm's mastery in residential design. Moreover, their recognition as an Emerging Firm by the AIA Northwest and Pacific Region in 2016 highlights their rapid ascension in the architectural realm. mwworks' holistic approach to design extends beyond mere aesthetics, embracing the complexities of building science and environmental performance. Their projects, characterized by clean lines, honest materials, and a seamless indoor-outdoor dialogue, reflect a deep understanding of the Pacific Northwest vernacular while pushing the boundaries of contemporary architecture. As they continue to evolve, mwworks remains committed to creating enduring, livable spaces that resonate with both their inhabitants and the natural world. 3100 ft² Case Inlet, WA, USA 2023 Previous Next

  • Steeplechase住宅 Brooks + Scarpa | Archicasting

2024 Previous Next

Project Name: HOUSE F Location: Ootakanomori, Nagareyama City, Chiba, Japan Design Team: Kamakura Studio Total Floor Area: 168.79 m² Completion: January 2022 Photography: TOREAL Koji Fujii, Shinkenchiku-sha Design Features: Project - Kamakura Studio's HOUSE F is a 168.79-square-metre residential and office masterpiece that embodies the sophisticated balance between community-engaged architectural design and seamless integration with daily life. The project is situated in an emerging neighborhood where 75% of residents have moved in within the past decade, creating an extraordinary social function where architecture serves as both community catalyst and neighborhood connector. The building's most revolutionary design feature lies in its multifunctional ground-floor spatial configuration: an open office space that simultaneously functions as a semi-public zone where neighbors can naturally gather. This innovative spatial strategy not only allowed the architects to extend private life toward the community, but also created a flexibly transforming multifunctional venue—becoming a small café through sharing extra coffee, serving as a cultural exchange center through community library functions, and hosting film screenings with projection equipment. The building literally makes space for community interaction to unfold at its core. Kamakura Studio's design strategy revolves around the central balance between blurred architectural boundaries and spatial continuity. Continuous materials, design elements, and floor levels blur traditional distinctions between interior and exterior, creating a spatial experience of "sharing something together, whether inside or outside the house." Separated roofs combined with a three-dimensional façade greening system visually integrate with the surrounding environment, responding to the local plant-sharing network that has developed across dozens of households. The principal façades operate as community interfaces, displaying the building's public functions to the street while maintaining residential privacy. Interior spaces prioritize functional flexibility and adaptability, with room configurations designed for flexible use and adaptation to evolving community activity needs. From coffee sharing and book exchanges to workshops, lectures, and film screenings, the architecture serves diverse community functional requirements. Three-dimensional greening systems, natural ventilation design, and open-plan spatial layouts significantly enhance the building's environmental adaptability. Exterior materials capable of withstanding Japanese climatic conditions further increase the building's durability and longevity. Terraces and interior spaces that alternate throughout both plan and section create rich spatial experiences reminiscent of living among forest trees. HOUSE F represents a paradigm of community-responsive residential architecture: an architectural language that prioritizes social connection, neighborhood interaction, and architecture as community infrastructure in perfect symbiosis between private residence and public function. Design Team - Kamakura Studio Co., Ltd. is a full-service, design-forward practice focused on creating architecture that fosters community connections and cultivates deep relationships between residents and the places they inhabit. Led by principal architects Keisuke Fukui and Keisuke Morikawa in collaborative leadership, the firm's focus on place-making and community building embodies forward-thinking approaches within contemporary Japanese architectural practice. Keisuke Fukui brings solid architectural educational foundation, graduating from Nihon University College of Science and Technology Department of Architecture in 2007, and completing graduate studies at Y-GSA (Yokohama National University Graduate School) in 2010. He gained practical experience at NAP Architectural Design Office, established his individual practice in 2012, and co-founded Kamakura Studio with Keisuke Morikawa in 2016. Keisuke Morikawa also graduated from Nihon University College of Science and Technology Department of Architecture, later completing his master's degree at Tokyo Metropolitan University, and worked at Kume Sekkei and Atsushi Kitagawara Architects, bringing rich design experience to the firm. The firm's philosophical foundation centers on the belief that architecture should facilitate dialogue within communities, enabling residents to become "stakeholders" in neighborhood development rather than "bystanders." This ethos drives their distinctive "Life Extension" methodology—a comprehensive design process that opens daily life functions to the community, beginning with profound understanding of what each community wants to become, exploring demographic structures, social needs, cultural contexts, and future development potential. Kamakura Studio's multidisciplinary approach recognizes that residential architecture exists at the intersection of private and public, individual and collective, weaving creative spatial strategies with rigorous functional analysis to deliver thoughtful, inspiring, sustainable, and authentic community architecture. Since its establishment, the firm has received multiple domestic and international awards including Good Design Award 2022, IF Design Award, and Chiba Prefecture Architectural Culture Award, demonstrating professional standards and innovative capabilities in community-responsive architectural design. 2022 Previous Next

Project Name: KSA Pavilion Expo 2025 Osaka Location: Yumeshima, Osaka, Japan Design Team: Foster + Partners Total Floor Area: 3,542.54 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Nigel Young Feature: Project - Located on the Yumeshima waterfront in Osaka, Japan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion designed by Foster + Partners creates a unique cultural experience for Expo 2025. The pavilion creates a spatial experience that echoes the exploration of Saudi Arabian towns and cities, while providing a setting for immersive engagement that connects visitors with the undiscovered wonders of the Kingdom. The pavilion's massing recalls the organic shapes of traditional Saudi villages. The design has been carefully crafted using computational fluid dynamics simulations to allow cool winds from the west into the streets during the height of summer. In the cooler months of April and October, the landscaped forecourt acts as a barrier to protect the pavilion from harsher northerly winds. Visitors enter the Pavilion through the forecourt, planted with native Saudi Arabian flora, and travel through narrow streets that lead to the Saudi Courtyard, which is the beating heart of the scheme. The Courtyard allows for moments of quiet reflection during the day and transforms into a venue for performances and events at night. From here, visitors are invited to explore a 'village' of meandering streets, with windows and doorways into a series of immersive spaces, designed in close collaboration with Journey (59 Productions and Squint/Opera). Through careful material selection and spatial organization, the pavilion honors Saudi's architectural heritage, evokes a sense of place, and provides visitors with a glimpse into the daily life and urban fabric of the Kingdom's streets. As a highly sustainable and inclusive pavilion, it has been designed to be net-zero operational carbon and aims to achieve the Japanese green building rating system's highest level (CASBEE S). The pavilion serves as an important platform for cultural exchange between Saudi Arabia and Japan, with capacity for 23,100 visitors per day, showcasing how Saudi Arabia balances tradition and heritage with modern technologies, forming its own urban microcosm that reflects the national transformation of the Kingdom.

Project Name: MORANDI Location: Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan Design Team: APOLLO Architects & Associates Total Floor Area: 185.44 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Kimiou Nishikawa Feature: Project - APOLLO Architects & Associates, in collaboration with renowned product designer Nicola Gallizia, has elevated storage systems from mere furniture to the defining architectural element in this Tokyo residence. Completed in May 2024, the 185-square-meter apartment renovation named "MORANDI" presents an innovative conceptual model for contemporary residential design. The project's distinguishing characteristic is its revolutionary approach to storage design—transforming signature system units from Italian furniture brand Molteni&C into the structural core of the residence. Rather than treating storage as an afterthought, Satoshi Kurosaki and Gallizia orchestrated a seamless flow of storage elements that not only connect rooms but simultaneously define the spatial hierarchy throughout the home. The residence's aesthetic is characterized by a dialogue between natural sunrise oak cabinet doors and dark oak ceiling panels, creating a precise visual rhythm throughout the space. The designers introduced brass-toned accents through carefully selected artworks and lighting fixtures, while silver travertine and Ceppo stone-patterned ceramic tiles in wet areas further enhance the Italian luxury aesthetic. Perhaps the most compelling design element is the choreographed sequence of movement. As residents traverse the apartment, they experience a journey guided by the continuous storage system from public to private spaces. This architectural promenade reveals fascinating parallels between Italian design elegance and traditional Japanese spatial concepts, where spaces are gently delineated through thoughtfully designed elements rather than hard divisions. The family room, which doubles as a welcoming entrance area, exemplifies this approach with storage systems that flow uninterrupted from living to dining to kitchen zones, creating a theatrical spatial experience. This continuity transforms everyday domestic activities into a sophisticated performance set against a backdrop of meticulous craftsmanship. MORANDI represents a significant architectural statement that challenges conventional relationships between furniture and space, demonstrating how storage systems can transcend functionality to become the primary architectural syntax through which space is articulated and experienced. The work fully demonstrates Kurosaki's attention to detail and ability to translate complex design concepts into harmonious living environments. Design Team - Founded by Satoshi Kurosaki in 2000 and incorporated in 2008, APOLLO Architects & Associates has established itself as one of Japan's most distinguished architecture firms specializing in contemporary residential design. Based in Tokyo, the practice has built an impressive portfolio characterized by sophisticated minimalism, innovative spatial compositions, and meticulous attention to material expression. Under Kurosaki's leadership, the firm has garnered international recognition through numerous prestigious awards, including multiple iF Design Awards, DNA Paris Design Awards, and DFA Design for Asia Awards. Their projects have been consistently nominated for ArchDaily's Building of the Year, with their distinctive residential works "TIMELESS," "ESPRIT," and "LAXUS" receiving particular acclaim in recent years. The practice maintains a diverse team of talented architects led by Chief Architect Osamu Fujii, with specialists bringing expertise from renowned institutions including Waseda University, Kyoto Institute of Technology, and Tama Art University. This international perspective is complemented by Kurosaki's academic involvement as a former lecturer at Keio University's Department of System Design Engineering. Project Name: House W Location: Nakafurano, Hokkaido, Japan Design Team: Florian Busch Architects Total Floor Area: 163 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: SGR Feature: Project - In a groundbreaking achievement for sustainable architecture, Florian Busch Architects (FBA) has created their first net-positive energy building in Hokkaido's Furano Plateau. House W challenges conventional wisdom by achieving energy efficiency through volumetric fragmentation rather than compactness. Located on former agricultural land, this 163-square-meter residence produces almost double the energy it consumes annually. The project's innovative approach lies in its deliberate breaking of a compact volume into two distinct parts, creating an interstitial space that serves both as a climate regulator and a viewing corridor toward Furano's ski slopes. The architecture actively engages with its environment through a sophisticated "solar skin" - a dark, homogeneous exterior integrating photovoltaic panels, which contrasts dramatically with the light, wooden interior spaces. What sets this project apart is its conception as a "plant for living with" rather than Le Corbusier's "machine for living in." The building responds dynamically to its surroundings, utilizing a year-round natural water source for heating and incorporating environmental strategies as core design elements rather than afterthoughts. This approach creates a prototype for sustainable rural development that maintains connections to urban life through technology. Design Team - Founded in Tokyo in 2009 by German architect Florian Busch, FBA has established itself as an innovative architectural practice that bridges European architectural theory with Japanese design sensibilities. Busch, who studied at Bauhaus University Weimar and the Architectural Association London, gained valuable experience working with Toyo Ito & Associates (2004-2008) before establishing his own practice. Operating as a licensed architectural firm in both Japan and Germany, FBA has developed a distinct methodology that challenges conventional architectural paradigms. The practice emphasizes what they term "anexact architecture" - designs that evolve through rigorous analytical processes rather than predetermined forms. Their work spans various scales, from residential projects to cultural institutions, consistently demonstrating their commitment to creating architecture that actively shapes the society it serves. 2024 Previous Next

ARED ARCHITECTS | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Material Waltz is an apartment renovation in Setagaya, Tokyo designed by Akaike Kazuhito of ARED Architects. Taking inspiration from the creative process behind waltz compositions, the architects sought to express the "dance of decoration" within renovation design. They viewed the existing rules of the apartment as a "musical score" and constructed a new “sheet music” along “skewed spatial axes”, treating materials as “musical notes” and giving them form beyond function. The 22 degree angle spatial axes pay respect to and organize the elements inside and outside the building, creating a unified yet non-monotonic atmosphere with its own unique personality - one where floorplans and arrangements take on musical rhythm and harmony. Beyond functionalism and aesthetics, the architects hoped to appeal to visitors’ emotions and experiences through this musical approach. They gave the materials, viewed collectively as “notes”, distinct “personalities” with whimsical designs that convey more than just modern practicality. The old and new materials assert themselves within the one-room space, crossing brightly like dancers waltzing to the inevitable beats of morning, day and night. Design Team - ARED ARCHITECTS was founded in 2023 by Akaike Kazuhito, the Managing Director and a first-class architect. With professional experience at both top contractors and design studios, he is highly versed in architectural designs ranging from small houses to large complexes, and everything from innovative concepts to solid details. Skilled at one-of-a-kind sculptural design, he strives to unlock projects' fullest potential while emphasizing client empathy. The firm provides comprehensive services encompassing architecture, furniture, product design and creative direction. So far, ARED has successfully completed a diverse range of projects in close cooperation with various clients. 2023 Previous Next

Industry of All Nations | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Nestled into the rugged Mojave Desert landscape on the edge of California's Joshua Tree National Park, The Landing House is a modern wood pavilion that masterfully blends sustainability and design. Created by Industry of All Nations, this desert retreat exemplifies eco-sensitive architecture through its modest horizontal form, integration with the natural terrain, and extensive use of regional materials. Upon approach along a winding 400-yard road, the home's low-slung profile surprises the eye, concealed until the last moment by the iconic Joshua trees and boulders native to the site. Two illuminated volumes connected by a central breezeway divide the house into dual wings that frame a plunge pool courtyard beyond. Floor-to-ceiling glazing blurs indoor/outdoor boundaries and complements the predominantly cedar interior finishes, echoing the surrounding desert hues. Thoughtful details abound, from the round window puncturing one bedroom to the yoga nook tucked discreetly behind a rock outcropping. And the project's sensitivity to environmental impact even extends to its very foundations – built directly upon the desert caliche to eliminate digging and disturbance. As the designers put it, "the landscape architecture is delivered courtesy of Mother Nature," a prime exemplar of humble, sustainable architecture in harmony with the land. Design Team - In April 2010, Industry of All Nations became a design and development office founded with a commitment to rethink methods of production for consumer goods. IOAN takes manufacturing back to the regions where products and materials originate, bringing unique local businesses to an international market. IOAN introduces everyday goods that are developed horizontally in collaboration with local communities around the world, creating novel products through traditional and innovative industrial processes. IOAN also searches the world for iconic products that are brought to the public with an identity unaltered - superb anonymous designs in a latent state waiting to be discovered. IOAN is determined to combine environmental and social awareness while promoting fair trade and open borders for all nations. 2023 Previous Next

TORAFU ARCHITECTS | Archicasting

Project Name: SLEEPY TOFU HOUSE Location: Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan Design Team: TORAFU ARCHITECTS Total Floor Area: 105 m² Completion: April 2025 Photography: Norio Kidera Feature: Project - SLEEPY TOFU HOUSE is the transformation of a retail space in Tokyo's upscale Minami-Aoyama district into the first Japanese flagship store for Taiwanese bedding brand "SLEEPY TOFU". Completed in April 2025, the project fully embodies the brand's core philosophy of "bringing softness to everyday life". The design of SLEEPY TOFU HOUSE began with a clear concept: creating a space where visitors could experience "soft living". Rather than adopting traditional product display methods, the architects designed a series of areas simulating actual living scenarios—entrance, living room, dining area, kitchen, study, and bedroom—connected naturally through carefully planned circulation, allowing visitors to experience products as they move through the space. The core highlight of the project is the centrally positioned "TOFU ROOM"—a white, softly contoured three-dimensional structure resembling tofu that not only serves as a spatial divider but also becomes the visual focal point of the entire store. This unique element both references the brand name and serves practical functions: the interior features benches and a desk that can function as a children's activity area, with openable windows allowing children to peek out and observe the external space. In terms of material selection, the architects deliberately chose elements that echo the soft texture of the products. Maple flooring creates a warm foundation, kitchen storage doors use environmentally friendly panels compressed from 100% recycled fiber waste, while curtains and rugs are selected from high-quality products by Danish textile brand Kvadrat. These carefully selected materials collectively create a gentle atmosphere that harmonizes with SLEEPY TOFU bedding products. The lighting design primarily uses indirect light sources, with soft illumination adding depth and a sense of envelopment to the space while highlighting the curved contours of the TOFU ROOM. The brand's iconic smiling face carved on the front of the TOFU ROOM becomes a key visual element symbolizing the brand's worldview. By combining residential space typologies, carefully selected materials, and the iconic tofu-shaped core structure, TORAFU has created a brand experience environment that transcends traditional display spaces, authentically expressing SLEEPY TOFU's brand philosophy of transforming daily life through softness. Design Team - TORAFU ARCHITECTS was established in 2004 by Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro. The firm's work spans a wide range, from architectural design to interior design, exhibition curation, product design, spatial installations, and multimedia production, all approached with architectural thinking as its foundation. Representative works include "Kohoku House," "NIKE 1LOVE," and "Air Vase," with the latter being permanently collected by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2015. Their installation "Loom of Light" created for Canon at Milan Design Week 2011 was evaluated as the best exhibition, winning the ELITA Design Award for excellence. Under the continued leadership of Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro, TORAFU has gained international recognition, including multiple Good Design Awards, iF Design Awards, and Red Dot Design Awards. Suzuno graduated from Tokyo University of Science and worked at Shearwater K&H and Australia's Kerstin Thompson Architects; Kamuro graduated from Meiji University and worked at Jun Aoki & Associates, their complementary backgrounds bringing diverse perspectives to the firm. TORAFU's design methodology emphasizes a process-oriented creative approach, rethinking spatial relationships at different scales, forming a work style characterized by conceptual clarity, material sensitivity, and functional innovation. Their ability to transform everyday necessities into design assets and translate brand concepts into architectural experiences is fully demonstrated in the SLEEPY TOFU HOUSE project. 2025 Previous Next
