  • Blue Bottle Coffee Toyosu Park Cafe Schemata Architects | Archicasting

Project Name: Blue Bottle Coffee Toyosu Park Cafe Location: Tokyo, Japan Design Team: Schemata Architects Size: 279.37 m² Completion Date: August 2024 Photographer: Takumi Ota Feature: Project - Nestled along the waterfront of Tokyo Bay, Blue Bottle Coffee's latest cafe reimagines the relationship between architecture, public space, and urban landscape. Designed by Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, the Toyosu Park Cafe breaks down traditional boundaries between interior and exterior, creating a fluid spatial experience that seamlessly integrates with its surrounding park environment. The 300-square-meter structure challenges conventional cafe design through its innovative approach to scale and connectivity. Rather than imposing a singular, monolithic volume, the architects have composed the cafe as a cluster of human-scaled "huts" that nestle gently into the open park landscape. This deliberate fragmentation allows the building to feel both intimate and expansive, blurring the lines between built form and public space. A key design strategy lies in the gradational approach to spatial experience. The architects have transformed the entire park into a potential cafe environment, with carefully designed transitional spaces that flow between outdoor, semi-outdoor, and indoor zones. Extensive use of glass and FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) creates a translucent envelope that allows uninterrupted views of Tokyo Bay while bathing the interior in soft, diffused light. The interior is equally thoughtful, with varying ceiling heights creating distinct zones that support different social interactions. The high-ceilinged Cafe 2 features community tables that encourage social engagement, while the lower-ceilinged Cafe 1 offers more intimate seating with panoramic views of the park and sea. Materiality plays a crucial role in the design, with bricks extending both inside and outside to eliminate spatial boundaries. Cantilevered FRP tables connected to structural columns further blur the distinction between architecture and furniture, creating a holistic design approach that celebrates connection and fluidity. Design Team - Schemata Architects, established in 1998 by visionary architect Jo Nagasaka, has emerged as one of Japan's most innovative architectural practices, consistently pushing the boundaries of spatial design through a distinctive methodology that bridges conceptual thinking with hands-on materiality. Founded upon graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts, Nagasaka's studio has evolved into a multidisciplinary powerhouse, orchestrating projects across architectural, interior, and furniture design. The practice, headquartered in Tokyo's Sendagaya district, operates under a philosophy that emphasizes 1:1 scale thinking—an approach that treats every project, regardless of scale, with the same rigorous attention to detail and spatial relationship. Under Nagasaka's leadership, the firm has garnered international recognition for its adaptive reuse projects and retail environments, notably the globally acclaimed Blue Bottle Coffee outlets and the innovative DESCENTE BLANC retail concept. The practice's portfolio demonstrates exceptional versatility, from private residences like the minimalist Sayama Flat to institutional projects such as the Musashino Art University Building No.16. Schemata's work is characterized by its material honesty, spatial fluidity, and innovative programming solutions. The firm's methodology often involves experimental material applications and creative space-planning strategies, resulting in environments that challenge conventional architectural paradigms while maintaining functional integrity. This approach has earned them numerous commissions for cultural institutions, retail brands, and private clients worldwide, establishing Schemata as a leading voice in contemporary architectural discourse.

Project:Joslyn Art Museum Team:Snøhetta + APMA Size:42000 ft² Location:Omaha, Nebraska, USA Feature: Project - The Joslyn Art Museum's expansion in Omaha, Nebraska, designed by Snøhetta and Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture, exemplifies a seamless integration of modern design with historical reverence. This transformative project revitalizes the museum while respecting its architectural legacy. Central to the expansion is a striking 42,000-square-foot wing, appearing to float above the landscape. Its elongated, horizontal form reflects the expansive Nebraskan sky, providing new, light-filled galleries that enhance the museum’s exhibition capabilities and foster a connection between art, architecture, and nature. The redesign extends beyond the building's interior. Snøhetta's renowned approach to public spaces is evident in the reimagined outdoor areas, featuring over three acres of gardens and installations that blur the lines between interior and exterior spaces. A new entry sequence takes visitors through a curated landscape, leading them to the museum's newly designed entrance. The façade of the addition is a modern interpretation of the original 1931 Art Deco structure, utilizing precast panels with pink aggregates that subtly echo the museum’s historic Georgia Pink marble. Inside, a grand atrium links the old and new spaces, with views of the original building’s façade and a gently sloping staircase that leads visitors upwards. This space encapsulates the project’s goal: to honor the museum’s rich history while creating a bold new chapter in its cultural evolution. Design Team - Founded in 1989, Snøhetta has emerged as a global leader in transdisciplinary design, seamlessly integrating architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and various other creative disciplines. This Oslo-based firm, named after a prominent Norwegian mountain, has built its reputation on a foundation of environmental sensitivity and cultural engagement. Led by founding partner Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Snøhetta's portfolio spans from intimate installations to large-scale urban developments. OYO Architects | Archicasting

Project Name: Lyco House Location: Pepingen, Belgium Design Team: OYO Architects Total Floor Area: 312 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Karen Van der Biest Feature: Belgian architecture studio OYO Architects completed the Lyco House project in Pepingen, creating a contemporary sustainable home that exemplifies how bold architectural intervention can transform historic barns into modern living spaces. The project is positioned within the green countryside less than 30 kilometers from Brussels, drawing inspiration from Belgium's rural heritage to create an architectural work that both celebrates agricultural building traditions and embodies innovative adaptive reuse strategies. The project's most compelling design feature lies in its strategic spatial reconfiguration through a dramatic triangular cut carved from the original barn volume. Rather than choosing conventional renovation approaches, the architects masterfully created a central courtyard that transforms the previously dark and enclosed space into a light-filled sanctuary. This ingenious triangular intervention not only floods the interior with natural light but also generates fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces while maintaining the traditional barn facade that preserves the building's agricultural character. The building's spatial choreography unfolds through carefully orchestrated levels, mezzanines, and double-height spaces connected by a striking geometric green steel staircase custom-designed by Atelier Manus. This vertical dialogue enhances the sense of spaciousness within the compact footprint, connecting bedrooms with living areas, kitchen with garden, and living room with elevated terrace, effectively blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior environments. The living spaces center around the kitchen, where a large salmon pink island stands out as a bold focal point. The light pine wood ceiling contrasts with polished grey cement floors, while custom-made dark wood furniture by Hout en Interieur adds warmth and craftsmanship. The living room, positioned on a slightly higher level above the kitchen, features a suggestive wooden ceiling and large windows that open onto the outdoor terrace, creating a unique spatial experience. Material selection demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to heritage and innovation. Carefully selected furniture in neutral tones is complemented by chromatic accents in green and terracotta, generating a soft and natural atmosphere in a warm and balanced environment. To ensure thermal comfort, sustainability, and energy efficiency, OYO Architects incorporated ecological and circular materials during construction, completely renovating the old asbestos roof and installing solar panels and other eco-technologies throughout the house. Denis Dujardin's landscape design plays a crucial role in shaping the setting, achieving fluid and respectful integration with the surrounding rural landscape through the use of local vegetation. Additionally, an ingenious and discrete solution has been developed to manage the area's excess rainwater, channeling it into a natural pond where it is purified and gradually filtered into the ground. Lyco House represents a thoughtful adaptive reuse approach, demonstrating how historic agricultural buildings can be transformed to meet contemporary living needs while respecting their original essence and environmental responsibility. Design Team - OYO Architects stands as a distinguished Belgian architectural practice that has established an exceptional reputation in innovative sustainable design. Founded by Nigel Jooren, Eddy Soete, Veroniek Vanhaecke, Lies Willaert, and Ferran Massip in 2011 and based in Ghent and Barcelona, under the creative direction of founding partner Nigel Jooren and design direction of partner Ferran Massip, the firm has developed a reputation for creating innovative solutions across residential, community development, and industrial architecture typologies. OYO Architects brings exceptional multidisciplinary collaborative experience and deep understanding of sustainable building practices to the practice. Under the leadership of founding partners, supported by a 25-person team including designers, architects, urban planners, and consultative specialists, the practice has garnered recognition for its commitment to ecosystem thinking and dedication to craftsmanship. This combination of holistic approach with contemporary design innovation positions OYO Architects uniquely within Europe's architectural landscape. The firm's design philosophy emphasizes that spatial purpose is as important as architectural execution, not rushing to standardized architectural solutions but believing that architecture should be a result of thorough understanding of social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Through intensive collaboration with clients, they define the project's spatial purpose—the positive impact the space should have on those that inhabit it. OYO Architects believes that the best spaces provide the setting for people to be at their best, challenging convention to reveal the true potential of space. Project Name: Hotel Nazuna Kyoto Higashihonganji Location: Kyoto, Japan Design Team: STUDIO ALUC Lead Architects: Jun Kameda, Hirona Sasaki Project Area: 595㎡ Completion: 2024 Photography: Kenta Hasegawa Feature: Project - Japanese architecture firm STUDIO ALUC has completed an exquisite renovation of a 100-year-old machiya in Kyoto, transforming the traditional townhouse into Hotel Nazuna Kyoto Higashihonganji. The 595-square-meter project, situated opposite the historic Mikage-do Gate of Higashi Honganji Temple, exemplifies a masterful balance between preservation and contemporary design innovation. The architects' most significant intervention was unifying two previously separate structures – the east and west wings – through a connecting roof while maintaining the building's historical integrity. Rather than concealing the multiple layers of renovation that the building has undergone over its century-long existence, STUDIO ALUC deliberately highlighted these temporal intersections, creating what they describe as "points where carpentry from different eras meet reveal a unique beauty and charm." The spatial organization reflects a deep understanding of traditional machiya architecture while incorporating modern luxury amenities. The original earthen floor (doma) in the west wing has been preserved and now flows into two carefully positioned courtyard gardens (tsuboniwa) that serve as natural light wells. These courtyards ingeniously solve the typical lighting challenges faced in traditional machiya while creating intimate connections between interior and exterior spaces. The project's most distinctive feature is its sophisticated accommodation design. The west wing's second floor houses three rooms offering views of the temple through cherry blossoms, each equipped with hinoki cypress baths. The east wing features unique duplex rooms spanning the second and third floors, accessed via traditional tansu (chest of drawers) staircases. Each room incorporates elements of traditional craftsmanship, from exposed roof beams to reclaimed-material tokonoma (decorative alcoves), creating an authentic yet luxurious guest experience. What sets this renovation apart is its careful attention to historical detail while seamlessly integrating modern comfort requirements. Lead architects Jun Kameda and Hirona Sasaki have created a space that doesn't simply preserve history but allows guests to actively experience it through thoughtful design interventions that bridge past and present. Design Team - Founded in 2020 by Jun Kameda and Hirona Sasaki, STUDIO ALUC has established itself as a distinctive Tokyo-based design practice that seamlessly integrates concept development and execution across various spatial scales. The firm's philosophy centers on discovering the essential relationships between human experience and spatial authenticity in contemporary society. The studio's comprehensive approach spans from product and furniture design to interior architecture and landscape planning, with their portfolio encompassing commercial spaces, hospitality venues, residential projects, and exhibition design. Their methodology is characterized by a meticulous balance between rational analysis and sensory experience, often collaborating with cross-disciplinary professionals including architects, landscape designers, and photographers to achieve holistic design solutions. Prior to establishing STUDIO ALUC, both principals honed their expertise at TONERICO:INC. under the mentorship of industry veterans Hiroshi Yoneya, Ken Kimizuka, and Yumi Masuko. Their work has garnered international recognition, including the 2023 A' Design Award Bronze and iF Design Award for the 'sisu' project. The practice's recent accolades demonstrate their emerging influence in contemporary Japanese design, while their recent hotel project, Hotel Nazuna Kyoto Higashihonganji, exemplifies their ability to sensitively interpret historical contexts through contemporary design interventions.

STUDIO MONAKA | Archicasting

Project Name: Sachibaru Village Location: Nanjo City, Okinawa, Japan Design Team: STUDIO MONAKA Total Floor Area: 142.42 m² Building Footprint: 122.55 m² Site Area: 584.39 m² Structure: Wooden construction, 2 stories above ground Design Period: January 2022 - January 2023 Construction Period: May 2023 - March 2024 Completion Date: March 2024 General Contractor: Arakaki Construction Structural Engineer: Ensake Structural Design / Ko Ensake Photographer: Yoshiaki Ida Feature: Project - Nestled in an ancient forest near the ocean in Nanjo City, Okinawa, Sachibaru Village emerges as a groundbreaking architectural project that challenges conventional design principles. STUDIO MONAKA, led by architects Yasushi Okayama, Shuhei Morita, and Kenichiro Nakamoto, has created a remarkable space that inverts the modernist dictum "form follows function" to spectacular effect. The project's most distinctive feature lies in its deliberate rejection of predetermined usage patterns. Responding to the client's desire for an undefined purpose, the architects crafted what they call a "third place" - a fluid environment that serves as a canvas for children's growth and learning. This philosophical approach manifests in a design that harmoniously integrates with its historic setting, carefully weaving between existing Ryukyu limestone formations and centuries-old trees. The 142-square-metre structure demonstrates exceptional environmental sensitivity, with the architects refusing to fell any trees during construction. Instead, they allowed the natural topography of the sloped site to guide the building's form, creating a dialogue between architectural intervention and landscape. The site, marked by ancient agricultural terraces dating back to the Ryukyu Kingdom period, retains its historical character while embracing contemporary design elements. What sets Sachibaru Village apart is its innovative prioritization of exterior spaces, with interior areas serving merely as complementary elements. This reversal of traditional architectural hierarchy results in a series of interconnected spaces that blur the boundaries between inside and out. The project exemplifies a distinctly Okinawan approach to space-making, characterized by generosity and openness, while establishing a new paradigm for educational environments that prioritize freedom and spontaneity over rigid functionality. The completed structure, with its modest footprint of 122.55 square metres spread across two floors, stands as a testament to how contemporary architecture can respect historical context while pushing the boundaries of conventional program definition. Design Team - STUDIO MONAKA, established in 2015 in Kyoto, Japan, stands as an innovative architectural practice that transcends conventional design boundaries. Founded by three visionary architects - Yasushi Okayama, Shuhei Morita, and Kenichiro Nakamoto - all born in 1987, the firm has evolved into a multidisciplinary studio that approaches architecture as a catalyst for community engagement and environmental harmony. The practice operates through dual headquarters - their main studio in Kyoto's historic Funaoka Park and a satellite office in Okinawa, established in 2018. This geographical diversity allows them to respond sensitively to both urban and tropical contextual challenges. Their portfolio spans residential, commercial, and public realm projects, with a particular emphasis on creating what they term "background architecture" - spaces that naturally foster human interaction and environmental connection. STUDIO MONAKA's design philosophy is distinguished by their unique approach to architectural programming, often beginning with exterior spatial planning before developing interior solutions. This methodology has garnered recognition, including the 6th Okinawa Architecture Award's Encouragement Prize in 2020. The firm's expertise encompasses master planning, architectural design, interior design, and environmental consulting, with a strong focus on community-driven projects. Under the leadership of Okayama, Morita, and Nakamoto, supported by a team of eleven professionals including certified architects and project designers, STUDIO MONAKA continues to push the boundaries of contemporary Japanese architecture while maintaining a deep respect for contextual and cultural sensitivities.

Anonym | Archicasting

Selgascano + Diego Cano | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Nestled in the hills of Los Angeles' Mount Washington neighborhood, the La Canaria House by Selgascano and Diego Cano offers a remarkable response to the city's iconic sunset views and unrelenting sunshine. This residential gem seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living, embracing the region's temperate climate with a ingenious design approach. The standout feature of the project is its striking golden aluminum mesh envelope, which envelops both the interior spaces and the expansive outdoor terrace. Acting as a visually arresting sunshade, this intricate lattice not only filters the intense California rays but also frames the breathtaking 180-degree panoramas that stretch from downtown LA to the Hollywood hills. Selgascano and Cano's design celebrates the fluidity between interior and exterior realms, creating a harmonious dialogue between the built environment and nature. The envelope's open structure invites verdant growth, with plans for various creepers, bushes, and ten different palm tree varieties to eventually colonize the vibrant canary-yellow cage, blurring the boundaries between architecture and landscape. Driven by a desire for affordability without compromising craftsmanship, the architects meticulously prefabricated and shipped the house's components, enabling efficient on-site assembly. This approach yielded a bespoke, handcrafted quality while maintaining costeffectiveness – a remarkable achievement in a city renowned for its high construction expenses. Design Team - Founded in Madrid in 1998 by José Selgas and Lucía Cano, SelgasCano has emerged as a pioneering architectural practice renowned for its innovative approach to materiality, color, and the harmonious integration of the built environment with nature. Led by the visionary duo, this Spanish atelier has garnered global acclaim for its creative exploration of unconventional materials and the seamless dialogue it fosters between architecture and its surrounding landscapes. SelgasCano's portfolio showcases a diverse array of remarkable projects, including auditoriums, congress centers, office buildings, and pavilions, each a testament to the firm's commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventional architectural norms. Their designs are characterized by a bold use of polychromy, translucent facades crafted from cutting-edge materials like ETFE and polycarbonate, and a profound respect for the existing natural context. With numerous accolades, including the Kunstpreis by the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and the Architects of the Year prize by the German Design Council, SelgasCano has solidified its position as a vanguard in the realm of contemporary architecture, continuously redefining the relationship between the built and natural environments.

These curves seamlessly connect two intricately entwined courtyards, serving as picturesque frames for the venue. Upon arrival, guests enter through the grand main entrance and are greeted by the warm embrace of an elegant, enclosed oval courtyard. This inviting sanctuary is bathed in natural sunlight, streaming through the expansive void that stretches from the ground to the sky, creating an uplifting and serene atmosphere. The brilliant illumination enhances the venue's beauty and invites guests to pause and appreciate their surroundings. Centrally located within the courtyard, a magnificent spiral staircase gracefully ascends to the second floor. This courtyard is a captivating focal point with its intricate design and as a practical passageway, effortlessly guiding visitors to the upper levels for additional festivities or quiet moments in the engagement space. Adjacent to the engagement room is an 80-seat restaurant, which can be converted into additional event space, offering a stunning 180-degree panoramic view of the Chao Phraya River. On the ground level, guests navigate through the ring-shaped entrance, guided by a pattern of ceiling lighting that subtly illuminates the path toward the main hall. The hall's design is spacious and enchanting, providing ample room for dining and dancing while maintaining an intimate atmosphere that makes each celebration feel unique and special. At the venue's rear lies a generously proportioned outdoor courtyard, a stunning setting that can host beautiful ceremonies or elegant receptions under the open sky. This space, enhanced by soft lawn landscaping and thoughtfully placed seating, complements the interior's charm, seamlessly transitioning from indoor elegance to outdoor allure. Meanwhile, the rooftop plans to complete the after-party rooftop bar, which is expected to be completed at the end of 2025. The shape and space of this wedding venue have been meticulously crafted with love and intention, ensuring that each couple's experience is as comfortable and memorable as possible. From its symbolic architectural form, the wedding ring, to its spacious space, this venue serves as a sanctuary for celebrating love, where every corner invites joy and connection among family and friends. Design Team - ASWA (Architectural Studio of Work - Aholic) was established in 2013 by Phuttipan Aswakool and Chotiros Techamongklapiwat, and has rapidly established itself as one of Bangkok's most conceptually rigorous design practices. The studio's phenomenological approach prioritizes the interplay between materiality, form, and natural illumination to create spatially dynamic environments that respond sensitively to their contexts. Under the leadership of Phuttipan Aswakool (born in Bangkok in 1982, graduated from Chulalongkorn University in 2005, and Columbia University, NY, USA in 2008) and Chotiros Techamongklapiwat (born in Bangkok in 1986, graduated from Chulalongkorn University in 2009), ASWA has developed a distinctive design methodology that begins with exhaustive site analysis. This contextual foundation informs their architectural vocabulary, resulting in projects characterized by tectonic clarity and programmatic innovation. The practice's approach is distinguished by its experimentation with materials, architectural forms, and characteristics of interior spaces that correspond in equilibrium with the use of natural light. For ASWA, a design is conceived from a thorough analysis of each project's surrounding context before being translated into its architectural language.

Alexandre Chaguri Arquitetura | Archicasting

MODA | Archicasting

In the heart of Calgary's Bankview neighbourhood, GROW emerges as a groundbreaking 20-unit housing project that seamlessly blends innovative architecture with urban agriculture. Designed by Modern Office of Design + Architecture (MODA), this multi-residential development challenges conventional notions of inner-city living by incorporating a sprawling 0.6-acre rooftop urban farm. The project's most striking feature is its zigzag sloped roof, which creates a visually dynamic silhouette and serves as a communal space for residents to engage in urban farming, socialize, and connect with nature. This ambitious amenity-scape introduces a scale of urban horticulture previously unseen in Calgary's inner-city housing. GROW's unique approach to fostering community extends beyond its rooftop. The development offers a diverse range of unit sizes, from compact studios to spacious two-story townhomes, encouraging a mix of residents across different age groups and family sizes. This intentional demographic diversity aims to build resilience and social connections through proximity. The architects have ingeniously responded to the site's challenging topography, utilizing a six-metre elevation change to create a terraced effect. This design maximizes views and natural light for all units and cleverly integrates at-grade parking without compromising the building's aesthetic appeal. GROW sets a new standard for multi-residential housing in Calgary by prioritizing social capital alongside real estate value. It offers a compelling vision for more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable urban living, where shared experiences and community engagement are at the forefront of residential design. Founded in 2013 by visionary architects Ben Klumper and Dustin Couzens, Modern Office of Design + Architecture (MODA) has rapidly established itself as a leading multidisciplinary design firm in Calgary, Canada.
