Originally built in 2001 with progressive green features, the building has now been reimagined by Dutch firm Atelier PRO architects to meet contemporary needs. Preserving the original design’s essence while upgrading its performance was key. Central to the redesign is a focus on people – providing flexible work spaces alongside inviting social areas to stimulate creativity. The atrium’s transformation embodies this aim; now filled with abundant plants and timber finishes, it forms the vibrant heart of the building. Wellness is also prioritized, with excellent air quality, access to outdoor terraces, and use of natural materials. Technologically, EDGE Stadium doesn’t disappoint. It’s Amsterdam’s first building to achieve the high sustainability credentials of BREEAM Excellent and WELL Core & Shell Gold, plus a top rating in smart connectivity. The original in-slab heating and cooling system was retained and improved. Along with the reuse of existing structures, this cements the project’s sustainable credentials. Ultimately, EDGE Stadium shows that with a people-centric vision and smart technological enhancements, existing buildings can be adapted to provide inspiring and healthy workplaces. Atelier PRO’s design sets the benchmark for giving enduring structures renewed life in the 21st century.
2025 Previous Next
NAP Architects | Archicasting
Titled "Library in the Earth," this tranquil sunken reading retreat immerses visitors in an earthy, womb-like space celebrating the agricultural roots of its location within the KURKKUFIELDS farm in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture. Designed by Takushi Nakamura & NAP Architects, the subterranean library gently emerges from the verdant valley it occupies like a bulbous protrusion from the earth itself. An intentionally understated approach path subtly draws people into the sculpted, grassy underground corridor lined with bookshelves. The architecture is pared back, eschewing columns and beams, with a dramatically cantilevered concrete void slab resting only on perimeter retaining walls. The seamless soil-finished surfaces blend into a carpet of drooping vegetation that introduces a hushed humidity. The ceiling heights fluctuate to create hidden child-scaled spaces and intimate reading nooks. At the deepest point, a terraced amphitheater encircled by shelves houses a storytelling area filled with books for local farm workers and children. The 40mm thick wooden shelf slats extend upwards as structural ribs, their interconnected load paths representing the interdependence required to create resilient community spaces. An overhead skylight frames circling clouds like a portal to the wider world this rural oasis ultimately serves. Established in 2002 by Hiroshi Nakamura, the Tokyo-based practice Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP has emerged as a leading voice in organic, contextual design thatharmonizes architecture with nature and human experiences. Led today by Nakamura and a team of directors including Soichiro Takai, Naoko Sumitani, Hirotoshi Koizumi, Masaki Hirakawa, Kohei Omori, Tomohiko Kimura, and Sadaharu Aoto, the firm takes a "microscopic" approach that draws inspiration from natural phenomena, human behavior, and emotional responses. Their design philosophy centers on fostering an organic relationship between the built environment, nature, and the human body. Nakamura aims to create "architecture that can only be found there" by thoughtfully responding to the unique regional context - incorporating local history, culture, industry, and materials. In recent years, the firm has looked to the essence of traditional Japanese architecture and garden design to inform their contemporary work. With a staff of 40 architects and designers, Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP offers full services including architectural design, urban planning, product design, strategic consulting, education programs, and research initiatives. Their award-winning projects have been internationally recognized across numerous prestigious competitions and publications. Previous Next

Project:GURUGURU SHAKASHAKA Team:Torafu Architects Size:51.12 m² Location:Tokyo, Japan Feature: Project - In the heart of Tokyo Solamachi, a new culinary destination is redefining the art of seasoning. GURUGURU SHAKASHAKA, a specialty salt shop designed by Torafu Architects, offers a unique blend of retail experience and interactive gastronomy. This 50㎡ corner space, adjacent to its sister store TACHIGUI UMEBOSHI YA, invites patrons to explore the vast world of salt in a setting that is both functional and visually striking. The shop's centerpiece is an expansive L-shaped counter, strategically positioned to welcome visitors from two directions. Here, customers can embark on a sensory journey, creating bespoke salt blends while sampling varieties on blue agar cubes – a nod to the sea's influence on this essential mineral. Behind the counter, a mesmerizing display of 600 blended salts transforms the wall into a library of flavors, facilitating efficient consultations while showcasing the shop's extensive range. The interior's color palette draws inspiration from salt itself, with fixtures adorned in blue-dyed linden plywood, evoking images of crystalline deposits and ocean depths. A playful touch comes in the form of a customized barber sign, reimagined as a rotating centerpiece that highlights original salt blends and related products. Hand-drawn illustrations featuring the store's mascots, "GURUGURU" and "SHAKASHAKA," infuse the space with charm and personality. The design's pièce de résistance is the neon "SHIO" (Salt) sign, which creates a visual dialogue with the "Ume" sign of the neighboring UMEBOSHI shop. This thoughtful detail not only enhances brand recognition but also establishes GURUGURU SHAKASHAKA as a must-visit destination in Tokyo's culinary landscape – a space that is truly worth its salt. Vereda Arquitetos | Archicasting
Project Name: House in Praia do Forte Location: Praia do forte, Brazil Design Team: Vereda Arquitetos Total Floor Area: 630 m² Completion: 2023 Photography: Nelson Kon Feature: Project - Vereda Arquitetos has completed the House in Praia do Forte, situated on a 1260 m² flat plot just 300 meters from the beach in Brazil's coastal 'restinga' ecosystem. This 630-square-meter residence employs a longitudinal design that maximizes views of the surrounding protected areas with their unique regional flora. The house is meticulously organized into three independent program blocks: The social block integrates the living room, dining area, and kitchen with the outdoors through retractable glass windows, transforming the space into a large veranda overlooking the pool and solarium; the master bedroom block includes the master bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, with a study room and atelier on the upper floor, each offering opposing views; the third block accommodates additional bedrooms (for the owners' daughters), guest rooms, and service areas, organized over two levels with front and rear property views. These three blocks are connected by a central circulation axis with levels offset by half-flights of stairs. This innovative arrangement means that from the pool level, only half a flight of stairs is needed to reach either the lower or upper levels. The design creates partially sunken lower-level bedrooms that offer a more comfortable and diverse ambiance compared to the upper-level accommodations, while the intermediate-level social block provides expanded views and convenient access. The construction employs a layered material strategy: a base of local natural stone forms the solarium, pool, entrance gardens, and retaining walls; a reinforced concrete structure built upon this stone base consists of six 3-meter-high concrete walls that define the program blocks and extend beyond interior spaces to form gardens; these 20-centimeter-thick walls with exposed concrete finish support upper-floor slabs, facade planters, and a central rainwater collection gutter; the final layer comprises wooden roofs and shading louvers, with shingle roof planes directing rainwater to the central gutter. As a contemporary contribution to the coastal landscape of Mata de São João, this beach house demonstrates Vereda Arquitetos' excellent balance of environmental sensitivity and architectural innovation. Design Team - Founded in 2013, Vereda Arquitetos develops architectural projects that combine inventive capacity, constructive viability, sustainability, and architectural excellence through a rigorous and attentive project development process. The studio views architecture as an activity that can contribute to the advancement of knowledge; recognizing that despite the scale and complexity of our cities, architecture still plays a fundamental role in their production, especially through its symbolic role and the construction of ideas. Vereda Arquitetos is based in São Paulo and undertakes projects across diverse fields, from furniture design to larger architectural projects. Its architects maintain strong academic engagement, understanding this participation as fundamental to the intellectual production of the studio and as a way to contribute to the formation of new architects and the advancement of the discipline. Through both intellectual and built project production, Vereda aims to contribute to the transformation of cities: to make them places of full personal realization and expression of our best collective ideals. The studio is led by founding partner João Paulo Meirelles de Faria, who graduated from the University of São Paulo's Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU USP) in 2002, obtained a Master's degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2012, and is currently pursuing doctoral studies at FAU USP (2023-2026). He has taught Architecture and Urbanism courses at Escola da Cidade and São Judas University. The team includes architect Bruno Manso, who graduated from São Judas Tadeu University (USJT) in 2017, earned a Master's degree from FAU USP in 2022, and has collaborated with Vereda since 2015, becoming an associate in 2022. This integration of academia and practice creates a productive tension in Vereda's work, where each project becomes a vehicle for intellectual inquiry while remaining grounded in architectural pragmatism. The studio's design philosophy aims to transform cities into spaces that express collective ideals while fostering personal fulfillment through thoughtful architectural interventions. 2023 Previous Next

Feature: Project - Set amidst the bustling urban environment of Seongnam-si, South Korea, the Pangyo Two Courtyards House by June Architects adeptly balances a connection to nature with privacy. The 297 sqm residence orchestrates a sculptural composition of graceful concrete forms which carve out two sunken courtyards. One courtyard sits opposite the entrance, unfolding an expansive double-height void which floods the home with natural light. The other nestles intimately alongside the living spaces. At the heart of the home is the central courtyard’s eight-and-a-half-metre tall wall constructed from a closed form concrete that offers a bold and expansive backdrop. This grand and lofty courtyard stitches together the split-level home, serving as a unifying locale where inhabitants can gather. The adjoining courtyard provides a more sheltered, private garden, sunk into the ground plane. Along its perimeter, textured concrete partitions rise up, elegantly curating views and filtering daylight into the home’s communal living areas via irregular voids. The thoughtful layout provides convenience by grouping the kitchen and laundry while still allowing for privacy in the personal quarters. By tempering external visibility via considered materiality and orientations, the Pangyo House delivers the dynamism of connection with nature alongside a refined intimacy. Project Name: MAY DAY CAFE Location: Yeoju-si, South Korea Design Team: SPACE DOT Total Floor Area: 330 m² Completion: 2022 Photography: Courtesy of SPACE DOT Feature: Project - SPACE DOT transformed a site in the historic village of Taepyeong-ri, Yeoju into May Day Cafe. Completed in 2022, the project fully embodies the core philosophy of providing "complete rest" spaces for urban dwellers. Taepyeong-ri has historically been a place where scholars traveling to Hanyang for civil service examinations would pause to rest, named for its peaceful and harmonious energy. The design of May Day Cafe began with a clear concept: creating a space that could "embrace the sky." The architects were inspired by a towering cedar tree named "Owol-i" (May) at the center of the site, whose form—branching skyward from a single trunk into two arms—directly influenced the cafe's twin-building configuration. The architects positioned Building A to house the kitchen and staff areas, while Building B opens panoramically through floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides, offering unobstructed views of the mountain ridgeline. The core highlight of the project is its sensitive response to the site's disrupted topography from development. To conceal the incongruous retaining walls created by construction, Building A was strategically arranged as a screen, while Building B, positioned at the village's highest point, maximizes connection with the natural landscape. The architects chose stone and wood as primary materials—elements once native to the land—as a gesture of homage to the nature lost to development. In terms of material selection, the architects deliberately chose elements that echo the site's original natural state. Stone and wood finishes serve not only as aesthetic choices but also as environmental memorials. Tranquil reflecting pools on either side of the building capture the ever-changing colors of the sky as they shift with wind, while a large window beneath the grand roof fully frames the sky and scenery of Taepyeong-ri, and lower side windows bring in natural light that transforms with the seasons. The lighting design emphasizes the seasonal variations of natural light, with the interplay of warm timber and overall white spatial voids creating a soothing and serene atmosphere. The central cedar "Owol-i" serves not only as the source of design inspiration but also becomes a key element symbolizing the cafe's identity—a space providing May-like warmth, comfort, and stability for rest. By combining cultural memory, natural inspiration, and contemporary architectural design, SPACE DOT created a modern sanctuary that transcends traditional commercial spaces, authentically expressing a contemporary interpretation of Korea's traditional rest stops, providing a place of tranquility and restoration for weary urban travelers. Design Team - SPACE DOT was established in 2021 by Seungwon Lee and Kyung Il Kim. The firm specializes in hospitality and commercial architecture design, known for its unique understanding of spatial fundamentalism—believing that architecture begins with individual points that aggregate into lines, surfaces, and ultimately cohesive spatial experiences. The firm's representative works demonstrate their commitment to contextually responsive design, gaining international recognition within just a few years, including the UNESCO Prix Versailles 2024 for Restaurants, the iF Design Award 2025 in Interior Architecture (one of the world's top three design awards), and the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2024 Asia-Café category. Under the continued leadership of Seungwon Lee and Kyung Il Kim, SPACE DOT has established its position among Korea's emerging architectural practices. The firm's design methodology transcends conventional aesthetic considerations, prioritizing sensory and emotional engagement while maintaining functional performance. They demonstrate particular expertise in adaptive site strategies, material authenticity, and biophilic design integration. SPACE DOT's creative philosophy emphasizes that each project should carry unique brand narratives, combining the cultural significance of place with contemporary functional requirements. They believe space is the art form closest to our lives, therefore committed to creating architectural experiences that not only impress visually but also resonate with users on sensory and emotional levels. The May Day Cafe project fully demonstrates their exceptional ability to transform brand concepts into architectural experiences. 2022 Previous Next

设计团队: RAD+ar(Research Artistic Design + architecture)是一家印度尼西亚建筑事务所,将设计定位为对空间、文化和可持续性的挑战性探索。 2025 Previous Next

Project Name: Awaji Island Dog Villa Location: Awaji Island, Hyogo, Japan Design Team: 1110 Architectural Design Office Total Floor Area: 185.49㎡ Completion: November 2024 Photography: Yohei Sasakura Feature: Project - Nestled in a developing area of Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture, the Dog Villa by 1110 Architectural Design Office emerges as a masterful exercise in balancing privacy with natural connectivity. Spanning 185.49 square meters, this contemporary vacation rental challenges traditional notions of inward-facing architecture through an innovative "weakened courtyard house" concept. The project's core philosophy revolves around finding equilibrium within uncertain surroundings, neither rejecting nor uncritically accepting the changing landscape. Architect Hiroto Kawaguchi has crafted a dwelling that functions not merely as a residence but as a mediator between interior and exterior environments. The villa arranges variously sized rooms in a "necklace-like" configuration that encircles a central dog-friendly courtyard, creating a spatial experience that is both protected and connected to the surrounding vistas. Innovative sustainability is evident in the exterior choices. Responding to strong coastal winds and salt damage, the design employs seamless roof-wall construction using salt-resistant galvanized steel panels. Its reddish-brown facade harmonizes with the traditional Awaji streetscape, while visible cedar interior elements respond to the nearby park greenery and distant mountain scenery. The interior is characterized by gentle skip floors that gradually elevate living spaces, diminishing the impact of road traffic while creating interconnected zones where humans and dogs can naturally coexist. Rather than conforming to existing topography, the villa shaped the landscape itself, creating a gentle hill within the courtyard using excavated soil that perfectly aligns with interior levels. More than just a vacation house, the Awaji Island Dog Villa is a meditation on how contemporary architecture can coexist harmoniously with nature—a modern sanctuary that allows inhabitants to maintain privacy while establishing profound connections with Awaji Island's varied natural scenery. Design Team - Founded in 2017 by Hiroto Kawaguchi and formally established in March 2018, 1110 Architectural Design Office has rapidly emerged as one of Japan's most thoughtful architectural practices. Located in Osaka's vibrant Minami-Horie district in Nishi Ward, this licensed first-class architectural firm has distinguished itself through a philosophy that balances distinct character with innovative design approaches. Recognized for its profound integration of inherent qualities with forward-thinking design, the firm has garnered international recognition with publications in prestigious platforms. The office's design philosophy centers on creating architectural spaces that respect site specificity while introducing progressive thinking, responding critically to urban transformation and environmental challenges. Led by founding principal Hiroto Kawaguchi, the practice has developed a robust portfolio of residential, commercial, and adaptive reuse projects. Kawaguchi holds a Master of Engineering degree and is a registered first-class architect (No. 359038) with extensive experience gained at Takenaka Corporation's Osaka design division (2009-2017). His work is characterized by meticulous attention to materiality, spatial sequence, and environmental integration. With multidisciplinary capabilities—including architectural design, land use planning, strategic consulting, and industrial design—1110 Architectural Design Office continues to push the boundaries of contemporary architectural practice, offering integrated design solutions that are both environmentally responsive and deeply attuned to human experience. As a practicing academic, Kawaguchi concurrently serves as a lecturer at Osaka Metropolitan University, Kindai University, and Setsunan University, ensuring the firm's theoretical approaches remain at the forefront of architectural discourse. 2024 Previous Next

Project Name: Kunitachi Terrace Location: Kunitachi, Tokyo, Japan Design Team: Tomoyuki Kurokawa Architects Total Floor Area: 458.65 m² Completion: June 2024 Photography: Yasuhiro Nakayama Design Feature: Project - Located in Kunitachi, Tokyo, the Kunitachi Terrace project represents a revolutionary cooperative housing concept meticulously designed by Tomoyuki Kurokawa Architects. Comprising six townhouse-style units, the project redefines collective living spaces through an innovative garden network. Situated in a historic residential district developed during the Taisho era, the project strategically addresses the diminishing spatial richness of the neighborhood. The architects envisioned a dynamic living system, intricately weaving residential units together through four distinct garden typologies: a communal courtyard surrounding the residences, private gardens created by the building's folded exterior, elevated personal terraces, and roof gardens offering graduated levels of privacy and interaction. These spaces are more than aesthetic additions—they are active living environments that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, private and collective. By adopting a cooperative housing model, the architects transformed potential limitations into opportunities, enabling residents to actively participate in designing and maintaining shared spaces, creating what the designers describe as a "living common." The project's architectural flexibility is particularly noteworthy. Instead of imposing a rigid design, the architects established guiding principles allowing gardens and living spaces to evolve organically. Cross-mezzanine layouts ensure each unit has a unique relationship with its surrounding environment, making residents active participants in shaping their living landscape. Design Team - Founded in 2012 by Tomoyuki Kurokawa, the practice has emerged as a distinctive voice in contemporary Japanese architectural design. Kurokawa, a graduate of Tokyo Institute of Technology, brings extensive international design experience from prestigious practices including Takkenaka Corporation, Herzog & de Meuron, and Kengo Kuma's Urban Design Office. The firm is renowned for its expertise in residential, institutional, and public space design, continuously pushing the boundaries of contemporary Japanese architectural discourse. Kurokawa's design philosophy seamlessly integrates structural innovation with environmental responsiveness, earning multiple accolades in architectural competitions, including Good Design Awards and notable nominations. 2024 Previous Next
Archicasting
Project Name: House of Cross Location: Beijing, China Design Team: Chaoffice Total Floor Area: 334 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Zhu Yumeng Feature: Project - Located in Beijing's Tongzhou District, the House of Cross represents Chaoffice's response to post-pandemic lifestyle shifts, designed as a single-story residence that accommodates three generations living and working together. Facing strict building regulations—residential plots limited to single-story structures with eaves no higher than 3 meters—the design team transformed these constraints into creative opportunities. The 334-square-meter residence adopts an innovative cross-shaped layout with wings extending in different directions and joining at their ends. To maintain the proportions of the central courtyard, the side wings were consolidated and pulled away from the perimeter, creating a narrow secondary courtyard at the rear. Similarly, the north-facing main hall was shifted southward, opening up a backyard. Each wing now enjoys dual-sided natural light, while the entire courtyard benefits from uninterrupted sightlines. The building's structural framework ingeniously recedes toward the roof ridge, with structural elements converging at the shear wall cores to form a cross-shaped structural anchor. The house, much like a mushroom, is supported at its center while its eaves extend outward in all directions. Freeing the perimeter from structural constraints allows the façade to dissolve, merging interior and exterior spaces. The cross-shaped layout creates a view that moves from near to far—courtyard, house, courtyard again—revealing overlapping scenes of daily life. The connection between glass façade frames and eaves was carefully designed: the eaves beams were lowered to 2.4 meters, allowing the eaves to extend downward like the edge of a mushroom cap. This solution maintains a comfortable ceiling height while creating a sense of shelter—whether under bright sun or during heavy rain, those sitting by the window feel like small creatures nestled beneath a mushroom cap, protected and at ease. The cross-configuration spatial arrangement addresses the needs of multi-generational living, with private spaces positioned at the four terminal points, providing a balance of intimacy and separation. Grandparents, parents, children, and guests each have their private spaces, while the central areas naturally become public zones where the family gathers and interacts. House of Cross creates an architectural language that is both contemporary and rooted in place through the combination of materials like laminated eucalyptus plywood and bridge-cut-off aluminum alloy windows, demonstrating Chaoffice's design philosophy of addressing real-life challenges rather than pursuing abstract traditions. Design Team - Chaoffice was officially established by Cheng Zhi in 2017, initially named as an observation and research institution parallel to "OEU Studio." Taking on approximately three projects annually, it has maintained the scale of a small studio, primarily led by Cheng Zhi with occasional collaboration from junior architects. After obtaining his master's degree in 2008, Cheng Zhi worked at URBANUS Beijing for six years before founding "OEU Studio" with university classmates and transitioning to independent practice in 2017. Chaoffice's methodology transcends conventional architectural practice, positioning design as one facet of a multidisciplinary approach that includes research, writing, documentation, and theoretical exploration. The studio's work is characterized by its response to site-specific conditions and hidden spatial orders, informed by Cheng's ongoing research projects such as "Impermanence in Various Forms"—an investigation into enduring urban elements that transform over time, echoing Aldo Rossi's theories on urban permanences. Cheng's design approach places architecture in parallel with observational research, reading, and writing, which mutually nourish each other to form a unique design perspective. Chaoffice's projects demonstrate a thoughtful reconciliation of regulatory constraints, spatial innovation, and contextual sensitivity, as exemplified by the House of Cross in Beijing's Tongzhou District. 2024 Previous Next

Feature: Project - The new SKIN1004 flagship store in the heart of Myeong-dong, Seoul emerges as a striking presence with its textured rock façadecontrasting with the glass storefronts typical of the neighborhood. The space artfully brings the essence of “untouched nature” into the urban setting through rich earth tones, organic shapes and textures that reference the untamed landscapes of Madagascar. Upon entering the craggy stone frontage, visitors traverse reed-lined “trails” and encounter swaying video walls depicting natural scenes, fostering an immersive multisensory connection with raw, primordial nature. Carefully orchestrated lighting and visibility between the exhibition-focused ground floor and the product lounge and retail area above enhance the continuity between the spaces tied together by an organic sculptural centerpiece. The innovative scheme spearheaded by Korean firm LMTLS liberates the brand identity from clichéd representations of nature with vibrant sand-hued tones and rough-hewn textures belying the sophisticated blend of natural inspirations filtered through contemporary form. The creative approach shapes an intriguing and unexpected haven contrasting the teeming urban activity outside, standing as a distinctive retail environment where cosmetics emerge as if concentrated from the very essence of the earth. Design Team - LMTLS is a New York & Seoul based architectural design group whose three co-founders, Daeho Lee, Beomki Lee, and Jaeyual Lee, began their collaboration at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during their Master of Architecture studies. Founded in 2015, the firm is committed to catalyzing change through innovative design, navigating towards the optimal design direction for each project. Project Name: Lighthouse Building Location: Aarhus, Denmark Design Team: 3XN Architects Area: 44,600 m² Completion: 2023 Photographer: Adam Mork Principal Designer: Kim Herforth Nielsen (Founder and Creative Director) Landscape Architect: Schönherr, Danjord Manufacturer: Kalzip (Roof System) Feature: Project - Danish architecture firm 3XN has completed Denmark's tallest residential building in Aarhus, featuring a distinctive rhomboid form with rounded corners and a parametrically designed façade that reflects the surrounding waterfront. The Lighthouse development, which marks a prominent position at the tip of Aarhus Harbor, represents a bold reimagining of waterfront living through its innovative "upside-down" approach to urban development. Rather than beginning with architecture, the project established social infrastructure first – including cafés, water sports facilities, and urban farming initiatives – allowing community feedback to shape the final design. Standing as the country's highest building, the tower's sculptural form responds to both its maritime context and the city's architectural heritage. The structure's elegant profile, achieved through a rhomboid geometry with two rounded corners, creates a slender silhouette that appears different from every angle, effectively eliminating the notion of a front or back façade. The development's most striking feature is its sophisticated façade system, which draws inspiration from water patterns and reflections. These prefabricated elements not only create visual intrigue but also serve a practical purpose in weight reduction. The unified architectural language extends across the entire complex, binding the high-rise structure with its mid-rise companions into a cohesive whole. 3XN's founder and creative director Kim Herforth Nielsen describes the project as "a lighthouse in more than one sense," referring to both its landmark status and its role as a prototype for community-centered urban development. The 44,600-square-metre mixed-use complex ingeniously balances private and public spaces. A waterfront promenade activated by restaurants, cafés, and retail spaces creates a vibrant public realm, while a protected courtyard offers residents a more intimate community setting. The development includes both private and social housing units, each carefully designed to maximize views and natural light through south-facing orientations and private outdoor spaces. Year-round programming adds vitality to the development, with facilities supporting traditional Danish activities like winter bathing. The addition of a public rooftop restaurant democratizes access to panoramic views over Aarhus Bay and the city, making the building's height an asset for the entire community rather than just its residents. Through its thoughtful integration of social spaces, architectural innovation, and contextual sensitivity, the Lighthouse development sets a new standard for how tall buildings can contribute to urban life while maintaining a strong connection to their surroundings. Design Team - Founded in 1986 in Aarhus, Denmark, 3XN has evolved into a global architectural practice renowned for its innovative approach to sustainable design and human-centered architecture. Currently led by a senior partner group of five with Kim Herforth Nielsen as Creative Director, the firm maintains offices in Copenhagen, Stockholm, London, New York, and Sydney, establishing a robust international presence. The practice gained international recognition through seminal projects like the Danish Embassy in Berlin (1999) and the Muziekgebouw Concert Hall in Amsterdam (1997), setting benchmarks for contextual sensitivity and programmatic innovation. Their portfolio encompasses a diverse range of typologies, from cultural institutions to sustainable high-rises, exemplified by recent completions such as the Olympic House IOC Headquarters in Lausanne and the award-winning Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney. In 2007, 3XN established GXN, an internal research and development department focused on green innovation, material technology, and circular design principles. This integration of research-driven sustainability with architectural practice demonstrates the firm's commitment to advancing the field through evidence-based design methodologies. The practice continues to push boundaries in sustainable architecture while maintaining its foundational philosophy of building design that benefits both users and urban context. 2023 Previous Next
Studio Hashimura | Archicasting
Feature: Project - Located along Meiji Dori in the heart of Harajuku, Tokyo, this slender building designed by Studio Hashimura serves as the headquarters for outdoor sportswear company Goldwin. The architectural intention was to express the brand's identity of “functional minimalism” while overlaying an organic imagery onto the modernist building archetype. Constrained on a small warped site, the facade became the sole outlet for architectural expression. Careful modulations in bay widths and floor heights give a sense of expandability and openness. The curtain wall grid divides the narrow frontage into accurate one-third segments, with slight deviations on the corner bays to achieve visual equality. The loftier ceilings on upper levels allude to the yearning for more light and air, not unlike the upward growth of plants. The exposed interior behind the glass, where sturdy braces replace beams to minimize visual clutter, essentially forms part of the layered facade. Vertical cut-through voids connect the split retail floors into singular spaces, most notably the entrance level which is left almost floorless, preparing visitors for an art installation floating in the voluminous air. Overall, rather than closing in, the sensitive treatment of the facade and section lends this compact building a valiant lightness against its dense urban surroundings. Design Team - Founded in 2023 by director Yuichi Hashimura, Studio Hashimura is an architectural design firm based in Tokyo, Japan. Hashimura brings over a decade of international experience, having previously worked at leading firms like Tony Fretton Architects and Carmody Groarke in London, as well as the New Material Research Laboratory in Japan. Studio Hashimura takes on projects across a wide range, including residential, commercial, office, and art-related commissions. Their portfolio covers new construction, renovations, and temporary installations. Underpinning their design approach is a commitment to uncover the unique spatial potential within each brief, free from stylistic limitations. Materials and forms are always driven by purpose rather than preference. As a Tokyo-registered architectural office, Studio Hashimura offers comprehensive services encompassing architectural design, project management, and consultancy. Whether adapting historical structures or building anew, Hashimura translates creative visions into functional built form with sensitivity and precision. The firm actively pushes boundaries while respecting budgetary realism, to create enriching spaces focused on human experience. 2022 Previous Next

Archicasting
Project Name: Breeze Auditorium Location: Hongkou District, Shanghai, China Design Team: SHISUO Design Office Building Area: 680 m² Completion: 2024 Photographers: Zhu Runzi, Lv Xiaobin, DONG Architecture Photography, Sa Nifu, Ye Jianyuan Feature: Project - Nestled within Shanghai's historic Lu Xun Park, the Breeze Auditorium by SHISUO Design emerges as a masterful synthesis of contemporary architecture and natural harmony. This 680-square-meter pavilion transforms a formerly forgotten corner of the park into a luminous sanctuary that serves both as a ceremonial space and a vital public amenity. The structure's most striking feature is its wing-like steel framework that appears to float above a landscaped base. The architects achieved remarkable structural efficiency using slender I-beam columns—measuring just 100x150mm—to support an impressive span of 42 meters in length, 15 meters in width, and 12 meters in height. This engineering feat is enhanced by a sophisticated double-layer perforated roof system that acts as an environmental filter, creating subtly different atmospheric conditions depending on the weather. The project's success lies in its response to two critical challenges: achieving high-quality construction within budget and time constraints, while creating a landmark spiritual architecture that harmonizes with its surroundings. The solution manifests in the building's dual nature—a soaring ceremonial space above and a topographic plinth below that seamlessly integrates with the landscape through a series of steps, viewing platforms, and water features. The careful choreography of approach is particularly noteworthy. Visitors traverse ancient stone steps and bamboo groves before encountering the hall's presence, creating a processional experience that gradually separates them from the urban bustle. This journey culminates in a dramatic main space that serves as a blank canvas for various public events, from weddings to exhibitions. Environmental sensitivity is evident throughout the design. The low eaves filter noise from nearby commercial streets, while the building's form facilitates natural ventilation through stack effect, creating a microclimate of gentle breezes even during Shanghai's humid summers. The water pool, deliberately left untreated, has become a sanctuary for local wildlife, transforming the structure into an unexpected urban ecosystem. In its first six months, Breeze Auditorium has already established itself as a cultural catalyst, hosting events ranging from flower markets to international fashion shows, accumulating over 30 million social media impressions. Through its thoughtful integration of ceremonial grandeur and human-scale details, the project represents a new typology of public architecture—one that celebrates both the extraordinary moments and the quiet daily rhythms of urban life. Design Team - SHISUO Design Office, established in 2023 in Shanghai, represents a new wave of contemporary Chinese architectural practice that bridges phenomenological sensitivity with tectonic innovation. Founded by architects Sa Nifu and Chang Shan, the studio has rapidly emerged as a significant voice in Asia's architectural landscape, gaining international recognition for their nuanced approach to materiality and spatial narrative. The firm's design philosophy is anchored in what they term "authentic tectonics" - a methodology that emphasizes the honest expression of construction logic while maintaining deep respect for genius loci. Their portfolio, though young, demonstrates remarkable versatility across scales, from urban planning to interior detailing, embracing the modernist ideal of total design "from city to spoon." Under the leadership of Sa Nifu and Chang Shan, SHISUO has developed a distinctive design language that synthesizes phenomenological experience with constructional clarity. Their work has garnered attention from prestigious international publications including Wallpaper*, Dezeen, and ArchDaily, establishing them as a emerging force in contemporary architectural discourse. The practice's commitment to material authenticity and spatial poetry is evident in projects like the Breeze Auditorium (2024), where structural expressionism meets contemplative space-making. This approach has positioned SHISUO at the forefront of a new generation of Chinese architects who are redefining the relationship between traditional spatial concepts and contemporary architectural expression. 2024 Previous Next
Cycle Cycle is a delightfully whimsical pop-up café and bakery that takes the form of a movable pavilion. Designed by F.O.G. Architecture, the project thoughtfully explores the interconnected relationship between food, land, and people through an architectural lens. The mobile bakehouse's rustic aesthetic draws inspiration from traditional barn structures and rural vernacular. Its facades are crafted from stacked cloth bags, blending the shapes of bricks with the texture of grain sacks to create a visually sturdy yet approachable effect. Elongated openings punctuate the sack walls, allowing glimpses of the baking activities inside while concealing equipment to maintain a "backstage" mystery. What makes Cycle Cycle truly unique is its emphasis on facilitating interaction and fostering connections. Low slung seating evocative of rural stools encourages users to experience the space at an intimate, human scale close to the ground. A temporary rest area can be created by propping up sunshade panels and curtains, carving out a semi-private gathering zone. Through its clever fusion of agricultural motifs, thoughtful spatial cues, and interactive elements, Cycle Cycle subtly reminds us of the deep, intrinsic bonds between people, food production, and the land itself. It's a humble yet profound exploration of society's roots manifested as a humble baked goods kiosk. 设计团队: F.O.G. Founded in London in 2018, F.O.G. Nestled in the picturesque Banhoek Valley of Stellenbosch, South Africa, the Kliphuis for Capensis Wines emerges as a testament to thoughtful, site-specific architecture. Designed by Slee & Co Architects, this 423-square-meter structure seamlessly blends into its breathtaking surroundings, offering a harmonious dialogue between built form and natural landscape. The project's standout feature is its commitment to utilizing local materials and traditional construction techniques. The building's foundation is formed by extending existing terrace walls, using stone harvested on-site and laid in an informal, handcrafted manner. This approach anchors the structure to its location and pays homage to the region's architectural heritage. Timber, sourced entirely from alien deforestation efforts on the farm, plays a starring role throughout the project. From the roof structure to the floors, walls, and even custom furniture, the use of this locally harvested wood creates a warm, tactile experience that echoes the natural world outside. The low-slung, dark corrugated roofs that seem to float above the stone walls further exemplify the design's sensitivity to its environment. Large, retractable glazed doors blur the boundaries between inside and out, allowing the tasting area to flow seamlessly onto a generous stoep. This indoor-outdoor connection maximizes views of the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountain ranges and enhances the wine-tasting experience by immersing visitors in the terroir that gives Capensis wines their unique character. Slee & Co.
