MVRDV | Archicasting

Electric car manufacturer NIO has unveiled its European flagship, the NIO House Amsterdam, transforming a 19th century canal house into a future-forward hub for mobility. MVRDV's sensitive renovation celebrates the building's layered history while adapting it for NIO's pioneering brand experience. The project deftly merges past and present, revealing longobscured original details like the grand staircase and Gerrit Rietveld's iconic 1933 glass pavilion rooftop addition. MVRDV's intervention sees the formerly closed-off upper floors brought back to public life through a program of event spaces, co-working areas, exhibition galleries, and NIO's pioneering products. A standout design move sees the material palette progressively lighten from earthy tones on the lower levels to atmospheric sky blues in the rooftop pavilion. Innovative eco-friendly finishes line the journey, like 3D-printed recycled drink carton wall panels and terrazzo floors made from renewable resources. This vertical transition culminates in the faithfully preserved modernist pavilion, transformed into an exquisite events venue with panoramic city views – a light-filled conclusion to MVRDV's atmospheric concept of rising from ground to sky. NIO House encapsulates the future of mobility through an embrace of history and sustainable innovation. Founded in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries, MVRDV has emerged as a vanguard in the architectural realm, pioneering innovative solutions to contemporary urban challenges. Foster + Partners | Archicasting

Kornudom received his architectural training at Assumption University, while Leelasiriwong holds degrees from Chulalongkorn University and ETH Zurich's prestigious MAS Urban Design program. Though small in size, WOS punches well above its weight class, with a portfolio encompassing architectural design, interiors, and innovative projects that defy simple categorization. The firm's design ethos prizes simplicity and practicality, but also actively embraces ambiguity. WOS conceives of architecture as crafting places not just for human dwellers, but for guests and nature as well - their work seeks to dissolve boundaries between building and environment. WOS's name itself exemplifies their multivalent approach - it can be read as three meaningless English letters, or interpreted from the Thai alphabet as meaning "enough." This openness to interpretation extends to their architectural language, which resists rigid codification in favor of nuanced, contextually-driven solutions. From compact urban renovations like the JY House to more expansive projects like the Little C Bakery Shop, WOS deftly navigates constraints with rational simplicity. Yet they also imbue each undertaking with a subtle ambiguity that provokes fresh perspectives. For this emerging studio, creativity arises from exploring possibility over probability - their practice is defined by simple, rational, yet delightfully multivalent outputs. WEBSITE PROJECT

Henning Larsen + espen surnevik | Archicasting

Project Name: Højvangen Church Location: Skanderborg , Denmark Design Team: Henning Larsen + espen surnevik Total Floor Area: 1500 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Rasmus Hjortshøj】 Engineering: Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, Ramboll Landscape Architecture: Schul Landskab & Planlægning Client: Skanderborg Parish Feature: Project - Danish architecture studio Henning Larsen completed a revolutionary contemporary church building in Skanderborg, redefining the role of the church in modern society through innovative non-directional spatial design and sophisticated light manipulation. Højvangen Church marks the first new church built in the parish for over half a millennium, representing a striking exception in an era marked by church closures and increasing secularization. Strategically located on the outskirts of Skanderborg, Denmark, this 1500-square-meter building honors Danish architectural heritage while embracing contemporary ideas of community and spirituality. The church's most distinctive feature lies in its centripetal layout design, with the baptismal font positioned at the absolute center of the building rather than at the traditional altar end. This central placement allows views to open in all directions——toward the forest, cemetery, and old church tower——reinforcing the idea of the church as a "civic clearing" rather than a directional space. Henning Larsen's ingenious spatial solution challenges traditional church layouts, creating a flexible interior space without formal front or back that feels both open and intimate yet sacred. The surrounding walls shift between solid and transparent, forming pockets of privacy that balance openness with intimacy, and community with personal reflection. This adaptable "clearing" can accommodate a wide variety of events, designed to include everyone. The building's gently undulating façade invites in shifting natural light throughout the day. Permeable walls filter and shape this light to create a dynamic interplay of shadow and atmosphere, making the architecture itself part of the spiritual experience. Materials such as brick, oak, and brass create a warm, timeless atmosphere. From the outside, the church appears as a sculpted pavilion set into the landscape, connected to the existing church center by a partially underground corridor. Most notably, the project extends Henning Larsen's design philosophy into furniture design, with the studio partnering with Danish furniture maker Brdr. Krüger to design a new stackable church chair named Ekko. The chair combines elegance with durability and is certified to the highest EU standard (L2) for extreme use, marking Henning Larsen's return to furniture design after 60 years. Design Team - Founded in 1959 by Danish architect Henning Larsen, Henning Larsen has established its international reputation for mastery in daylight manipulation and sustainable design excellence. Under the current leadership of Managing Director Jacob Kurek——who began as an intern in 1997 and has guided the firm's global expansion for nearly three decades——Henning Larsen continues to push boundaries across architecture, landscape, urban design, and interiors. The studio's design philosophy centers on manipulating daylight as a tangible material, earning founder Henning Larsen recognition as "the master of light" within the architectural community. This light-centric approach, rooted in the founder's childhood experiences in Western Jutland, remains a defining characteristic of the practice's contemporary work. The architects maintain acute attention to detail whilst never losing sight of the bigger picture. The firm maintains a global presence with over 600 employees, with design communities spread across studios in eight countries. Their portfolio demonstrates exceptional versatility, spanning cultural institutions, educational facilities, and urban masterplans while consistently emphasizing environmental responsibility and social impact. The studio is committed to navigating the complex connections that bind together built environment, ecological systems, and societies at large, manifesting lasting change through co-creation, innovation, and cultivation. Henning Larsen's design excellence has been recognized through prestigious accolades including the 2012 Præmium Imperiale Architecture Laureate, the 2013 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture——Mies van der Rohe Award for Harpa Concert Hall, and the 2019 European Architect of the Year Award. Designed by Ken Wai, the sprawling 500,000 sq m complex comprises smart offices, labs, a visitor centre and amenities arranged like a floating 'Bodhi leaf' on the waters of Hangzhou's South Lake. The crystalline buildings radiate outwards forming layered courtyards evocative of traditional Chinese architecture. Finger-like office blocks run east-to-west, bridged by landscaped walkways and centering on a public plaza with dining. Following the veined patterns of a leaf, pedestrian routes branch organically through the semi-enclosed garden spaces. The workspaces blend open collaborative areas with private meeting rooms based on a 'work cluster' concept. The modular office floors span 500-4,000 sq m and avoid sight lines between blocks through angled glass facades. Roof gardens promote connection with nature.

  • Glade House Ming Architects | Archicasting

Oioioi | Archicasting

Project Name: House Rinconada Location: Malinalco, Mexico Design Team: Oioioi Total Floor Area: 1110 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Cesar Belio Design Features: Project - Mexican architecture studio Oioioi completed the House Rinconada project in Malinalco, creating a subtle dialogue between architecture, landscape, and living through this 1110-square-meter residence situated in a privileged natural setting. The project unfolds on a single level, prioritizing horizontality as a strategy to blend harmoniously with the land and surrounding garden, demonstrating how contemporary design can achieve profound impact through restraint rather than bold gestures. The project's most compelling design feature lies in its linear arrangement of stone volumes------a series of monolithic stone blocks arranged in linear succession, defined by walls of constant height that emphasize spatial and structural continuity. Above these volumes, horizontal planes of exposed concrete rest like floating roofs, generating deep shadows and framing specific views of the landscape. This tectonic gesture provides unity to the ensemble, while the intermediate voids allow for controlled entry of light and natural ventilation. Oioioi's masterful control of material expression seamlessly integrates traditional building techniques with contemporary architectural language. The construction system combines volcanic stone masonry and cast-in-place concrete, both low-maintenance materials with strong local roots. The material palette integrates harmoniously with the indigenous vegetation, reinforcing the sense of permanence and serenity throughout the composition. The relationship between architecture and landscape demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of environmental stewardship. The landscape design is envisioned as a natural extension of the field, with chosen species primarily consisting of wild plants and shallow bodies of water that promote biodiversity, reduce water consumption, and bring seasonal dynamism to the ensemble. The house does not impose itself on the site: it rests upon it. This thoughtful treatment of the interplay between mass and void creates an ever-changing spatial experience that blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior. The intermediate spaces not only control light penetration and facilitate cross-ventilation but also serve as spatial connectors linking different parts of the architecture. House Rinconada is more than just a residence------it becomes a spatial meditation on architectural humility, environmental sensitivity, and gentle reconnection with nature's essential rhythms. Design Team - Oioioi stands as a distinguished architectural practice located in Mexico City, specializing in architectural design and construction since its establishment in 2019. Under the leadership of founding principals Ernesto Pérez Rea Juncá and Pablo Germenos García, the firm has cultivated a distinctive design philosophy that challenges conventional design paradigms through multidisciplinary collaboration and continuous experimentation. The studio's design excellence manifests through its questioning of traditional architectural dichotomies------the boundaries between physical and intangible, historical and contemporary, holistic and detailed. This approach generates architectural solutions that resist uniformity while maintaining rigorous design standards. Oioioi's multidisciplinary ethos extends beyond conventional architectural services, functioning as both design studio and construction practice. Oioioi's architectural methodology demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of spatial relationships, material properties, and environmental responsiveness. Their projects consistently exhibit masterful tectonic craftsmanship, thoughtful integration of natural elements, and contextual sensitivity that respects local building traditions while embracing progressive design principles. The practice operates with a multidisciplinary spirit and collaborative approach, drawing nourishment from the synergy of teamwork, making exploration and continuous learning the cornerstone of their practice. The firm's design thinking revolves around seeking to combine diverse perspectives to reimagine what is possible in architecture, with each project evolving in response to continuous feedback loops, testimony to their commitment to resisting uniformity. Through comprehensive professional services including architectural design and construction, Oioioi is committed to challenging the traditional boundaries that define architectural paradigms through innovative design practices, demonstrating unique innovative spirit and environmental sensitivity within the contemporary Mexican architectural landscape.

BIJOUPIKO Fukui emerges as a masterful exploration of spatial sequencing, where the architecture itself becomes an invitation to wander and discover. The project's most striking feature lies in its thoughtful architectural composition, which orchestrates a harmonious dialogue between contrasting spatial experiences. At its core, a sophisticated two-story volume houses the main retail area, characterized by its warm brown-toned walls and intimate atmosphere – a deliberate choice that creates an ideal environment for the considered selection of bridal rings. This central space is flanked by double-height voids that introduce an entirely different spatial quality. These light-filled galleries, finished in pristine white, feature full-height glazing on the northern façade and carefully positioned clerestory windows on the east and west elevations. This configuration ensures a constant, diffused natural illumination that transforms these transitional spaces into ethereal volumes. Responding to the local climate, the building adopts a practical gabled roof designed to withstand heavy snowfall, while incorporating a contemplative rock garden visible from the interior. This thoughtful integration of exterior elements extends the visual journey beyond the building's confines. The 299-square-meter structure, completed in April 2024, represents a new typology in retail architecture where the shopping experience is elevated through a carefully choreographed sequence of spaces. Located just 15 minutes by car from the newly extended Shinkansen station at Fukui, BIJOUPIKO demonstrates how architectural narrative can enhance the ritual of jewelry selection, creating a memorable journey through light, space, and material. Design Team - Founded in 2015 by Koichiro Oniki, ODS (Oniki Design Studio) has established itself as one of Japan's most innovative architectural practices, specializing in spatial design that transcends conventional boundaries. The studio, which reorganized as a corporation in 2017, operates at the intersection of architecture, interior design, and exhibition design, delivering projects characterized by their sophisticated spatial sequences and attention to experiential quality. Principal architect Koichiro Oniki, born in 1977 in Tokyo, brings a unique international perspective to the practice, shaped by his formative years in the United Kingdom. Following his architectural studies at Waseda University, Oniki honed his expertise at Nikken Sekkei, one of Japan's leading architectural firms. His decade-long tenure as Chief Spatial Design Director at nendo, where he spearheaded numerous international projects, significantly influenced the studio's current design philosophy. Project Name: House in a Meadow Location: North East, New York, United States Design Team: Group Projects Architecture Floor Area: 2,800 ft² (approx. 260 m²) Completion Year: 2024 Photographer: Nicholas Venezia Feature: Project - Black-clad gabled volumes emerge from a meadow in upstate New York, where Group Projects Architecture has designed a residence that masterfully navigates the dialogue between architectural intervention and natural landscape. The 2,800-square-foot House in a Meadow demonstrates how thoughtful site positioning can enhance both the building's functionality and its inhabitants' experience of the surrounding environment. Rather than placing the structure at the property's highest point, the architects made the strategic decision to nestle the home at the meadow level along the base of an existing ridge. This unconventional choice not only preserved the site's mature trees but also created a natural windbreak and established a compelling spatial narrative that unfolds as visitors descend from the arrival point. The project's most distinctive feature is a bold excavation move: a 100-foot-long slice carved into the ridge creates a dramatic concrete-retained courtyard that serves as an intimate counterpoint to the expansive meadow views. This engineered "outdoor room" exemplifies the project's sophisticated approach to landscape integration, where architectural intervention enhances rather than diminishes the site's natural qualities. The building's form takes cues from vernacular barn architecture but elevates it through precise material execution. The exterior is unified by black corrugated metal that wraps continuously from facades to roof, creating a monolithic appearance that's subtly animated by the material's wave pattern and exposed painted rafter tails. Large glazed openings pierce this dark envelope, offering strategic views while adding depth to the simple gabled profile. Inside, four Douglas fir-clad millwork blocks float within the open plan, functioning as both spatial organizers and service elements. The interior palette is restrained yet rich, combining white surfaces with concrete floors and bronze-framed sliding doors. A gently vaulted ceiling above the communal spaces adds a cloud-like softness to the interior volume, while lower ceilings in private areas create more intimate zones – demonstrating how subtle spatial modulation can enhance the domestic experience without compromising architectural clarity. Design Team - Group Projects, established in 2018 in Brooklyn, represents an emerging force in contemporary architectural practice that exemplifies a rigorous approach to design through collaborative methodology. The practice, while relatively young in its institutional timeline, leverages the extensive expertise of its founding partners who bring experience from prestigious firms including Gensler, SOM, and LEVENBETTS. The firm is led by a triumvirate of accomplished architects: Andrew Feuerstein, Jonathan Man, and Bret Quagliara. Feuerstein, serving as the Lead Architect, brings significant institutional and residential expertise from his tenure at LEVENBETTS, complemented by his environmental design background from the University of Colorado and advanced architectural studies at Parsons. Man contributes his comprehensive experience from Gensler and SOM, backed by his Berkeley education, while Quagliara adds a multidisciplinary perspective that bridges architecture and graphic design. The practice's design philosophy emphasizes a holistic approach to project delivery, fostering intensive collaboration among clients, technical consultants, contractors, and fabricators. This integrated methodology enables the firm to develop bespoke architectural solutions that respond precisely to project-specific parameters while maintaining high standards of technical execution and aesthetic refinement across various scales and typologies.

  • House Y Mikazuki Architects | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Nestled at the dead-end of a T-junction in Toyota City's Tendo neighborhood, the Michikari House designed by Kazuki Moroe Architects brings the concept of "streets" into a private residence. The area is known for its winding roads and alleyways, including the historic Iida Kaido path nearby. Embracing these idiosyncrasies, the architects incorporated multiple open-air "streets" throughout the house to foster interaction, sunlight, and ventilation. At the home's north-south axis, a hobby room with engawa porch fronts the street, blurring public and private space. This allows residents to engage with neighbors while enabling sunlight and breezes to permeate from the inner courtyard to the rear façade. On the east side, another large engawa creates an indoor-outdoor living room for family life to spill out towards the back garden. The architects hoped that if all neighbors did this, it would create communal voids benefitting everyone. Inside, an elevated bridge street connects the east and west wings. Acting like an urban lane, it provides some privacy while allowing family activities to be overheard from the street, with circulation routes modulating interpersonal distances. Ultimately, the house translates the concept of vibrant, welcoming streets into residential architecture. Design Team - Founded in 2008 by Kazuki Moroe, Kazuki Moroe Architects is an architectural design firm based in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Kazuki Moroe previously studied at Tokyo Metropolitan University Graduate School and worked at Shirakansi Associates before establishing his own practice. Over the past 15 years, the firm has been recognized with various awards for its sensitive residential designs attuned to local contexts, including Good Design Awards and the Association for Aichi Quality Housing Awards. Notably, in 2023, Moroe was honored with the Chubu Architecture Award for the Okuma Machine Tool Engineering Building at Nagoya University. With a focus on sustainability and community, Kazuki Moroe Architects continues to produce human-centric architecture across scales from interiors to urban landscapes.
