Wittman Estes | Archicasting

2024 Previous Next

MVRDV | Archicasting

Electric car manufacturer NIO has unveiled its European flagship, the NIO House Amsterdam, transforming a 19th century canal house into a future-forward hub for mobility. MVRDV's sensitive renovation celebrates the building's layered history while adapting it for NIO's pioneering brand experience. The project deftly merges past and present, revealing longobscured original details like the grand staircase and Gerrit Rietveld's iconic 1933 glass pavilion rooftop addition. MVRDV's intervention sees the formerly closed-off upper floors brought back to public life through a program of event spaces, co-working areas, exhibition galleries, and NIO's pioneering products. A standout design move sees the material palette progressively lighten from earthy tones on the lower levels to atmospheric sky blues in the rooftop pavilion. Innovative eco-friendly finishes line the journey, like 3D-printed recycled drink carton wall panels and terrazzo floors made from renewable resources. This vertical transition culminates in the faithfully preserved modernist pavilion, transformed into an exquisite events venue with panoramic city views – a light-filled conclusion to MVRDV's atmospheric concept of rising from ground to sky. NIO House encapsulates the future of mobility through an embrace of history and sustainable innovation. Founded in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries, MVRDV has emerged as a vanguard in the architectural realm, pioneering innovative solutions to contemporary urban challenges. Field Architecture | Archicasting

Project Name: Big Sur House Location: Big Sur Coast, California, USA Design Team: FIELD Architecture Total Floor Area: 687 m² Completion: December 2022 Photography: Joe Fletcher Design Features: Project - FIELD Architecture's Big Sur House is a 687-square-metre contemporary residential masterpiece that embodies the sophisticated fusion of architectural humility and environmental symbiosis. The project is situated on a rugged site shaped by tectonic action, heavy winter storms, extreme solar exposure, atmospheric salinity, and the constant motion of oceanic swells, creating an extraordinary visual dialogue between architecture and the spectacular landscape. The villa's most revolutionary design feature lies in its split pavilion configuration: two stone building masses connected by a bridge that spans a restored seasonal ravine. This bold organizational strategy not only allowed the architects to resurrect a native waterway that carries rainfall from the Santa Lucia mountains to the Pacific Ocean, but also created a habitat corridor that has already attracted returning wildlife. The building literally makes space for nature to flow through its heart. FIELD Architecture's design strategy revolves around the central balance between architectural resilience and landscape integration. Massive tapered stone walls echo the striated cliff faces below, their slender gray courses creating a visual dialogue with geological formations. Above these grounding elements, separated roofs appear to float through an ingenious operable clerestory system, visually merging with the horizon and adjacent Monterey cypress grove. The principal façades operate as carefully designed frames, transforming views of the surrounding complex ecological environment into a series of living tableaux. Interior spaces prioritize flexibility and adaptability, with room configurations designed for flexible use and future adaptation as family needs change and evolve. From intimate gatherings to more inclusive periodic events, the architecture serves the family across a range of functions. Optimized shading systems, thermal mass of large stone walls, clerestory venting, and a large solar array on the roof significantly reduce energy consumption. Exterior materials that can endure solar, wind, saline, and fire exposure further increase the building's durability and longevity. All structural timber is FSC certified, with the majority comprising recycled content engineered timber. An onsite septic system eliminates waste, recycles water, and naturally replenishes water tables. The Big Sur House represents a paradigm of site-specific coastal modernism: an architectural language that prioritizes ecological restoration, environmental resilience, and architectural humility in perfect symbiosis with its spectacular setting. Design Team - FIELD Architecture is a full-service, design-forward practice focused on creating architecture that belongs to the land and fosters connection between individuals and the places they love. Led by father-and-son team Stan Field and Jess Field, the firm's interest in place-making spans generations and countries, embodying a unique inheritance of architectural wisdom. Stan Field brings exceptional architectural pedigree, having studied under legendary architect Louis Kahn and earning his Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He possesses decades of international experience, having served as Chief Architect to the City of Jerusalem and practiced in three countries where his work has been widely acclaimed. Jess Field, born in South Africa and immersed in architectural discourse from an early age, developed design fluency through early sketching and drafting, later earning his Master of Architecture from UC Berkeley with highest honors and winning the Eisner Prize for highest creative achievement. The firm's philosophical foundation centers on the belief that architecture should facilitate a conversation with nature, enabling humans to return to being "a part" of nature rather than "apart" from it. This ethos drives their distinctive GROUNDSCAPE methodology—a comprehensive site-reading process that begins with profound respect for what each place wants to become, exploring site conditions, cultural context, available resources, and historical narratives. FIELD Architecture's multidisciplinary approach recognizes architecture's position at the intersection of art and science, function and form, weaving creative insight with rigorous technical expertise to deliver thoughtful, inspiring, sustainable, and authentic built environments. The studio comprises talented individuals working collaboratively to realize the vision for each project, embodying principles of rich material sensibility, holistic ecological thinking, and integrity of craft. 2022 Previous Next

Designed by the esteemed architecture firm CASE-REAL, this remarkable project seamlessly integrates the contrasting elements of its urban and spiritual surroundings. At the core of the design lies a strategic decision to centralize the kitchen, transforming it into a symbolic stage that visually connects the two distinct pathways around the café. This thoughtful layout not only establishes a strong identity reminiscent of Blue Bottle's brand, but also serves to create a harmonious flow between the bustling street-facing side and the more serene approach to the shrine. Further enhancing the spatial experience, the architects have ingeniously addressed the site's 50-centimeter height difference between the street and the shrine approach. By gradually raising the height towards the shrine, they have crafted a vibrant standing area on the street side, while the shrine-facing side offers a calming atmosphere with comfortable sofa spaces. The material palette, featuring light beige-toned extruded cement panels and warm walnut wood, strikes a delicate balance between the urban and the natural, seamlessly blending the café's interiors with the surrounding environment. Through this thoughtful design, CASE-REAL has succeeded in creating a sanctuary that serves as a gentle link between the city and the shrine, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the unique intersection of these two distinct realms. Inspired by the fluidity of textiles and ocean waves, the building features a remarkable undulating brick facade that serves as both a visual spectacle and a functional element. The design team, led by architect You-Han Lin, employed a sophisticated algorithmic approach to create the wave-like effect on the exterior. The facade comprises 520 layers of bricks, with the wave amplitude gradually increasing from 0 to 170 cm at the roofline. This unique brick curtain wall pays homage to Seoul's rich brick-building heritage and houses service facilities and vertical circulation. Internally, the building is organized into three distinct zones: a community facing the street, an open-plan office space, and an executive area at the top. A three-story atrium connects these spaces, infusing the interior with natural light and creating a contemplative atmosphere reminiscent of Gothic cathedrals. The project's standout features include its reinterpration of Gothic arches, inverting them from interior to exterior, and the creation of a vertical community through interconnected outdoor spaces and internal courtyards. This innovative approach to corporate architecture not only provides a striking addition to Seoul's urban landscape but also fosters a sense of community and well-being for W-Mission's employees and visitors alike. Founded in 2000, Behet Bondzio Lin Architekten is an interdisciplinary architectural practice with offices in Münster and Leipzig, Germany. • Sugarloaf餐厅 Hierarchy Group | Archicasting

Project Name: Sugarloaf at Flockhill Location: Lake Pearson , New Zealand Design Team: Hierarchy Group Total Floor Area: 560 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Dennis Radermacher – Lightforge Feature: Project - Hierarchy Group completed a striking hospitality project in the heart of New Zealand's Canterbury region, transforming a remote historic sheep station in the Craigieburn Valley through innovative architectural language and thoughtful landscape integration. Sugarloaf at Flockhill converts an agricultural heritage site into a world-class dining destination that invites guests to immerse themselves in the stunning landscape of the Southern Alps, demonstrating the perfect synthesis of commercial functionality with New Zealand's farming heritage. The restaurant is strategically positioned to frame the dramatic landscape, this 560-square-meter complex captures the innovative spirit of hospitality design while paying homage to the region's agricultural memory. The project's most distinctive feature lies in its soaring seven-meter-high cathedral-style interior space, completely shrouded in timber to create an atmosphere of warmth and quiet calmness that defines the entire dining experience. Hierarchy Group's ingenious design solution balances the built form with its natural context through deliberate restraint. The architects employed a carefully curated material palette of pared-back timber, raw concrete, and blackened steel both internally and externally. The ebony-stained Western Red Cedar cladding was chosen for its natural resistance properties, with its subtlety taking a backseat to the incredible landscape within which the restaurant resides. The building's programming encompasses world-class dining facilities while maintaining connection to the land. Oversized copper doors lead into the vast cathedral-style space, while a monumental concrete fireplace punctuates the interior, suspended from the ceiling by engineered steel frames hidden within double flues. The masculinity of the building is further balanced by organic curves, introduced through soft furnishings and hardware selections that reference the surrounding mountains through triangular shapes. Most notably, the project demonstrates how contemporary hospitality architecture can achieve commercial functionality while creating spaces that feel intimately connected to their landscape. Verticality serves as a guiding principle throughout the design, reflected in timber and concrete detailing and emphasizing the grandeur of the interior through rhythm and symmetry evident in paired elements throughout the space. Design Team - Founded in 2003 by Design Director Chris Wheeler, Hierarchy Group has established itself as a pioneering force in contemporary Australasian architectural practice, consistently bridging rigorous design methodology with cultural innovation technologies. With headquarters in Auckland and Christchurch, the firm has established itself as a comprehensive interdisciplinary consultancy providing professional design services across diverse building typologies throughout New Zealand and the broader international region.

Project Name: KALHA Hotel – “Unico” Village Renewal Location: Zhangjiakou, China Design Team: CPLUS Area: 1,190 m² Year: 2024 Photographs: Liu Jing, Captain Feature: Project - The KALHA Hotel in “Unico” Village, Zhangjiakou, represents an innovative approach to rural hospitality architecture that transforms a traditional village into a contemporary retreat destination. This unique hotel project ingeniously integrates 10 independent guest room units into a continuous spatial system, creating a harmonious architectural ensemble that responds sensitively to both the terrain and the traditional village fabric. The project's most distinctive feature is its creative response to the site topography. The building gradually ascends from south to north, creating guest room clusters at four different elevations. This design not only preserves the original terrain characteristics but also provides unique landscape views for each room. The building employs materials that match the local soil color, making the overall form appear as if it were a geometric structure naturally emerging from the earth. The spatial design excels in its modern interpretation of traditional village spatial sequences. The design team cleverly transformed the original village pathways into the hotel's public streets, creating rich indoor-outdoor spatial experiences. The irregular layout continues the organic growth patterns of the village, avoiding the programmatic spatial arrangement of conventional hotels. Each guest room unit is carefully designed to ensure privacy while offering carefully framed views of the village and distant mountains through thoughtfully placed windows. The project innovates by functioning not just as accommodation space but as a vibrant social platform. The public areas are designed to accommodate diverse activities, from exhibitions to lectures, from small performances to cultural exchanges, providing rich interaction possibilities between urban visitors and local residents. Through careful control of materials, space, and form, the architectural design presents a fresh interpretation of rural architecture. Design Team - CPLUS is a Beijing-based architectural practice founded in 2014 by Cheng Yanchun and Li Nan. Over the past decade, the firm has evolved into one of China's most innovative architectural practices, renowned for its profound understanding of traditional culture and innovative application of contemporary architectural language. • Entreverdes住宅 24 7 Arquitetura | Archicasting

Project Name: Entreverdes House Location: Campinas, Brazil Design Team: 24 7 Arquitetura Total Floor Area: 445 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Adriano Pacelli Feature: Project - Nestled on a challenging 8-meter sloped plot in Brazil, the Entreverdes House by 24 7 Arquitetura represents a thoughtful response to the pandemic-era migration from urban centers to countryside living. The 445-square-meter residence skillfully navigates its 1200-square-meter site through a series of strategic design decisions that transform topographical constraints into architectural opportunities. The architects' innovative approach begins with a lateral vehicle ramp that cleverly conceals cars from street view while eliminating the need for a third floor. This functional solution serves a greater purpose in creating fluid spatial distribution throughout the home, allowing the structure to harmoniously follow the natural contours of the land. Viewed from above, the residence reveals itself as a captivating composition of solid and void, where winding pathways, grassy areas, a green roof, and carefully placed skylights create a dynamic interplay between built form and landscape. The deliberate positioning of the ground floor at the highest permissible level strengthens the home's connection to the adjacent dense preservation forest while simultaneously providing privacy from street level. Perhaps the most striking feature is the partially cantilevered concrete box housing the swimming pool, which remains invisible from public spaces. This architectural gesture exemplifies the project's commitment to blending experiential luxury with discreet elegance. The structural system combines concrete with metal truss beams, creating an aesthetically pleasing volumetric expression. The programmatic organization places private areas on the upper floor, complete with an outdoor bleacher designed for contemplation of the forest views. Meanwhile, the ground floor accommodates leisure spaces at the front of the plot to maximize sun exposure and privacy. Two strategic voids flanking the living room ensure abundant natural light and ventilation throughout, while the home opens itself to northern and southern exposures while remaining closed to harsh western light. Through this thoughtful design, Entreverdes House creates an architectural experience where residents remain in constant dialogue with the surrounding forest, transforming a challenging site into a contemplative dwelling that epitomizes contemporary Brazilian residential architecture. Design Team - Founded in 2008 by three university classmates while still in school, 24 7 Arquitetura—whose name reflects their commitment to "thinking and breathing architecture 24 hours a day, 7 days a week"—has established itself as one of Brazil's leading architectural practices known for its thoughtful, context-sensitive designs. Led by founding partner Giuliano Pelaio, the team blends expertise spanning from Contemporary Architectural Design to Sustainable Systems and Technology. This academic foundation manifests in their design philosophy, where sustainability and contemporary expression are inextricably linked. The firm's portfolio demonstrates remarkable versatility, encompassing high-end residential projects like the recently completed Entreverdes House, social housing developments, commercial renovations, and large-scale institutional work. Their design methodology treats architecture and interior design as inseparable disciplines, creating holistic environments where technical systems, spatial organization, and materiality work in concert. What distinguishes 24 7 Arquitetura is their evidence-based approach to sustainability, carefully considering each project's orientation, form, structure, energy systems, and thermal performance to optimize natural resource utilization. This technical rigor is balanced by an experimental mindset that embraces innovative tools, materials, and technologies to create buildings that transcend mere visual appeal to become livable, enduring environments that positively impact users throughout the building's lifecycle. 2024 Previous Next

The pavilion creates a spatial experience that echoes Bahrain's seafaring traditions and history, while providing an immersive environment that connects visitors with Bahrain's deep relationship with the sea. The pavilion rises from 13 to 17 meters in height across four levels, overlooking the seafront. Its design draws inspiration from the Kingdom's seafaring heritage and traditional dhow construction techniques, while ingeniously integrating Japanese joinery craftsmanship. This cross-cultural technical fusion creates a unique architectural expression reflecting the shared connection to the sea of both island nations. The structure is assembled from approximately 3,000 pieces of unengineered wood through intricate joinery, an approach that minimizes construction waste. The design incorporates minimal foundations to avoid concrete usage, ensures nearly all materials are reusable, and employs passive cooling through coastal winds to reduce energy consumption, making it one of the most sustainable buildings in the Expo. Visitors explore the pavilion through a multisensory exhibition experience curated by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, featuring collaborations with artists including Shepherd Studio, Sissel Tolaas, Hassan Hujairi, and La Méduse to narrate themes of connectivity through trade, crafts, manufacture, pearling, and ecology across a series of galleries. The central space provides moments of quiet reflection during the day and transforms into a venue for performances and events at night. The pavilion also includes a café designed by award-winning chef Tala Bashmi offering seasonal menus blending local Bahraini flavors with Japanese ingredients, and a dedicated business area developed by Bahrain's Economic Development Board showcasing the Kingdom's strategic position as an open, global economic hub for investment. As a highly sustainable and inclusive pavilion, it demonstrates how Bahrain balances tradition with modern technologies, forming its own cultural microcosm that reflects its long history of coexistence with the sea. Expo 2025 Osaka is expected to attract over 28 million visitors from around the world, with the Bahrain Pavilion serving as an important platform for cultural exchange.

Project: Suzhou Public Culture Centre Visitor Centre Location: Suzhou, China Architect: Tsing-Tien Making Area: 250 m² Project Year: 2024 Photographers: Wang Minjie, Liu Shucen Feature: Project - Nestled along the bustling Renmin Road in Suzhou’s historic Gusu District, the Suzhou Public Culture Centre Visitor Centre, designed by Tsing-Tien Making, stands as a tribute to Suzhou’s vibrant cultural heritage. The Center is a comprehensive facility, housing the Suzhou Art Museum, the Suzhou Cultural Center, and several other art institutions, making it a focal point for art, culture, and public engagement. The design team envisioned the Civic Center as a “community living room,” combining information services, contemporary art exhibitions, relaxation spaces, and support for emerging artists. By opening up the façade and blending warm and cool materials, the structure fosters a welcoming yet modern aesthetic that invites interaction. Eleven striking roof structures of varying heights and lengths create a harmonious rhythm, giving the building a sculptural presence that both complements and enhances the surrounding urban landscape. Inside, the design extends to suspended ceilings with an engaging “puzzle game” concept, transforming trapezoidal modular arrangements into a dynamic indoor roofscape. This modular approach simplifies construction and reduces timeframes, embodying both aesthetic appeal and functional innovation. Furthermore, modular display islands within the space mimic the outer roof structure, creating adaptable display platforms for exhibitions. This project elevates the quality of life for the local community, providing a platform for cultural activities and a unique artistic hub for young creators. For Suzhou, it is not only a venue but a cultural icon, a testament to the city’s heritage and modernity, reimagining the role of public space in civic life. Design Team - Founded in 2023 by Freja Bao, Tsing-Tien Making is an innovative architectural studio that approaches each project as a dialogue between historical roots and contemporary relevance. The studio’s name, meaning “Cyan Sky,” is derived from a traditional Chinese phrase highlighting the cultural significance of cyan in ancient China. With expertise spanning architectural design, renovation, art curation, and product design, Tsing-Tien Making aims to enrich public spaces by intertwining local cultural heritage with modern architectural sensibilities. Freja Bao’s international experience in the UK and Japan has deeply influenced her design philosophy, bridging cultural nuances with contemporary aesthetics. Under her leadership, Tsing-Tien Making’s design process begins with a profound respect for tradition, meticulously delving into historical narratives to craft designs that resonate with contemporary life.

Feature: Project - In a quiet Tokyo neighborhood near the Route 7 loop, architect Tomoyasu Kawakubo has created an ingenious new apartment building that defies conventional housing typologies. Dubbed Casabella, the three-story complex occupies an irregularly shaped, sloped plot hemmed in by roads on three sides - conditions that would normally severely limit the buildable area. Kawakubo's innovative solution involves offsetting the building footprint from the parcel boundaries and employing the "sky exposure plane" exemption to extend portions of the upper floors beyond the zoning envelope. This allowed him to maximize interior space while creating striking projecting volumes. The staggered, "skip-floor" layout further opens up the residences. The resulting sculptural form is a refreshing departure from Tokyo's typical boxy apartments. Small extruded masses containing window nooks encourage residents to personalize these cozy spaces as small businesses, ateliers or simply relaxation areas. Combined with the open-concept interiors, they put occupants' unique lifestyles on display to the street. By thinking outside the box, Kawakubo has crafted an unexpectedly bold yet contextual design maximizing every square meter of the constrained site. At 96.2% of the permitted size, Casabella showcases how skillful planning can create distinctive homes from even the most challenging urban plots. Design Team - Founded in 2005, Kawakubo Tomoyasu Architecture & Associates is a Tokyo-based architectural firm making waves with their innovative residential and commercial projects. Led by principal architect Tomoyasu Kawakubo, a first-class certified architect, the firm's tight-knit team approaches each commission with fresh creative energy. Kawakubo cut his teeth at the renowned Isozaki Arata & Associates before branching out on his own in 2002. His mastery of spatial planning and keen eye for detail shine through in designs that maximize functionality while expressing a distinct aesthetic vision. The firm's residential work, such as the award-winning Kuramae Small House and Nishihara Row Houses, demonstrates an ability to craft highly livable spaces on constrained urban sites. With Kawakubo at the helm, the practice embraces an interdisciplinary approach, often blurring the lines between architecture and product design. This cross- pollination results in compelling environments where customized furniture and fixtures seamlessly integrate with the architectural concepts. Beyond designing innovative buildings, the firm is deeply engaged in architectural education. Kawakubo has taught at Nihon University's College of Engineering since 2014 and serves as a visiting researcher, nurturing the next generation of talent. Through built works earning international acclaim and a commitment to advancing the profession, Kawakubo Tomoyasu Architecture & Associates has cemented its position as one of Japan's most exciting emerging practices. Previous Next

Feature: Project - The new NORDØSTAMAGER SCHOOL in Copenhagen is designed as an open and inviting communal epicenter for learning and community engagement. A key feature is the leisure zone seamlessly integrated into the surrounding urban fabric with staircases doubling as seating and workout platforms. This "architecture of leisure" blurs the line between school and city, inviting the public to interact and take ownership. As one ascends the exterior stairs, an elevated playscape opens up, giving respite from the busy streets below. Full-size trees and play areas create an outdoor oasis where kids play and locals relax. The zone facilitates learning through play and community connections. Inside, the ground floor offers gym, workshops, maker spaces and an auditorium for after-school activities bringing together students, adults and neighbors. The open plan and flowing spaces are designed to enable dynamic social interactions. An atrium with a monumental staircase connects the floors, bringing light in while allowing the youngest students privacy. This vertical circulation spatially organizes learning environments, with higher grades occupying the upper secluded floors. The school promotes health, quality education, equality, sustainability, innovation, strong communities and more. The architecture facilitates the school's role as a unifying hub for education and community life in a progressive yet inviting way. • Aster by Joshua Paris餐厅 RooMoo Design Studio | Archicasting

2025 Previous Next

The four elevated cabins sit gently along the curve of the mountain, their translucent polycarbonate roofs creating a striking sculptural presence. Rather than mimicking traditional rural architecture, the lodges boldly embrace contemporary forms and materials. The economical polycarbonate cladding transforms visually from opaque white when sunlit to a luminous lantern-like glow after dusk, hinting at the inner vitality within. The interior spaces have been carefully choreographed to forge an intimate connection with nature through intelligent windowing strategies. On the ground level, full-height glazing extends the vista horizontally like a Chinese scroll painting, while upper floors frame scenic vignettes through apertures and corner windows. The topfloor loft dramatically unveils a panorama of distant Lianyun Mountain peaks. By eschewing conventional solutions, EERI has crafted a differentiated, cost-effective getaway that captures the ephemeral poetry of the landscape. The Spark Lodges seedestinies of beauty - igniting the imagination as transient guests become one with their sublime environs. Design Team - EERI Architecture Studio is a Shanghai-based practice founded by principals Rui Hou and Lijin Zhu after graduating from the University of California, Berkeley. • Healing pets Informal Design | Archicasting

Project:Healing pets Team:Informal Design Size:300 m² Location:Hangzhou, China Feature: Project - In the heart of Hangzhou's Xiaoshan district, a former toy factory has been brilliantly reimagined as a haven for pet lovers and their furry companions. Informal Design Studio's latest project, Healing Pets, transforms an industrial relic into a vibrant community hub that celebrates the bond between humans and animals. The 300-square-meter space artfully blends the old with the new, preserving the building's industrial character while infusing it with contemporary flair. Exposed roof structures intertwine with sleek modern insertions, creating a dynamic interplay of textures and eras. This juxtaposition is further enhanced by the thoughtful use of materials – rough-hewn washed stone, pebble-infused concrete, and warm marine plywood come together in a tactile symphony that's both durable and inviting for paws of all sizes. At the core of the design is a striking brand identity that elevates the humble ramp into a powerful visual motif. This sloping form, essential for pet accessibility, becomes a unifying element that flows seamlessly from 2D graphics to 3D spatial interventions. The result is a cohesive environment where every detail, from signage to furniture, reinforces the project's pet-centric ethos. Informal Design Studio's masterful manipulation of the double-height space creates distinct yet interconnected zones. A welcoming café area spills into a central activity space, crowned by a mezzanine level that houses additional pet-friendly amenities. This vertical expansion not only maximizes functionality but also allows natural light to cascade through the interior, animating the space throughout the day. Healing Pets stands as a testament to thoughtful, inclusive design. It's a place where the urban fabric is strengthened through the shared love of animals, offering a blueprint for how our cities can evolve to embrace all their inhabitants – human and four-legged alike. Design Team - Founded in Shenzhen, Informal Design has rapidly emerged as a vanguard in architectural and spatial design since its inception. This dynamic studio, led by a team of young, forward-thinking designers, has carved out a distinctive niche in the industry with its unconventional approach to creative problem-solving. Informal Design's philosophy is rooted in the interplay between chaos and order, embracing the unpredictable nature of creativity. Their projects are characterized by a bold juxtaposition of elements, challenging traditional spatial hierarchies and pushing the boundaries of contemporary design language. Unknown Surface Studio | Archicasting

Project Name: Curvy Dining Location: Bangkok, Thailand Design Team: Unknown Surface Studio Project Area: 250 m² Completion Date: 2025 (Expected) Photography: Rungkit Charoenwat Feature: Project - In a striking departure from Bangkok's industrial vernacular, Curvy Dining emerges as a sculptural masterpiece that challenges conventional restaurant design. Conceived by Unknown Surface Studio, this 250-square-metre dining destination stands as a testament to organic architecture, where fluid forms and natural inspiration coalesce into a remarkable spatial experience. Set against the raw industrial backdrop of Srinakarin - Rom Klao 19, the project's most compelling feature is its innovative interpretation of floral architecture. The design team, led by Cievanard Nattabowonphal, Piyanat Songkhorh, and Nonglak Boonsaeng, has masterfully translated the geometry of blooming flowers into a sophisticated architectural language. The result is a structure that appears to unfold from a central point, creating a mesmerizing interplay of curves and radial patterns. What sets Curvy Dining apart is its thoughtful negotiation between geometric precision and organic fluidity. The exterior's squared framework provides a deliberate contrast to the flowing interior spaces, while the subtractive design approach carves out intuitive circulation paths that guide visitors through a carefully choreographed sequence of spaces. This architectural promenade is enhanced by integrated green pockets that blur the boundaries between built form and landscape. The project's white materiality serves as a canvas for natural light and shadow play, creating an ever-changing visual experience throughout the day. The studio's commitment to environmental dialogue is evident in the way the building responds to its context – rather than imposing itself on the site, it appears to emerge from it, creating what the architects describe as an "auto-landscape effect." Scheduled for completion in 2025, Curvy Dining represents a bold vision for hospitality architecture, where the rigid boundaries between interior and exterior dissolve, and where architectural form becomes a medium for expressing natural phenomena. It stands as a powerful example of how contemporary architecture can create meaningful connections between urban dining experiences and organic design principles. Design Team - Unknown Surface Studio, established in 2020, is an innovative architectural practice that has rapidly emerged as a significant force in contemporary design, particularly within the Asia-Pacific region. Founded by the visionary trio of Cievanard Nattabowonphal, Piyanat Songkhroh, and Nonglak Boonsaeng, the firm has distinguished itself through its parametric design approach and biomorphic architectural language. The practice's design philosophy is deeply rooted in the synthesis of computational design methodologies and organic form-making, informed by the founders' diverse international experience, including tenures at prestigious firms such as MAD Architects. Their work is characterized by fluid geometries, innovative spatial configurations, and a sophisticated understanding of environmental context. Under the leadership of its founding partners, Unknown Surface Studio has developed a distinctive portfolio that emphasizes the integration of advanced digital fabrication techniques with sustainable design principles. Their projects, ranging from hospitality venues to public installations, showcase a commitment to pushing the boundaries of conventional architectural expression. The studio's approach to design is marked by their signature "unknown yet" methodology, which challenges traditional architectural paradigms through experimental form-finding processes and parametric optimization. This innovative stance has garnered attention for projects like Uncloud Coffee & Dining and Curvy Dining, which exemplify their ability to create spaces that are both functionally sophisticated and aesthetically progressive. With offices in Bangkok, the firm continues to expand its influence across Southeast Asia, bringing their unique blend of computational design expertise and organic architectural expression to increasingly ambitious projects. 2025 Previous Next

Designed by Montana Architect Cavin Costello of The Ranch Mine, this retreat in Whitefish offers a unique sanctuary just an hour south of the Canadian border. The residence's design draws inspiration from the glacial valleys of nearby Glacier National Park, with its silhouette mirroring the crisscrossing mountains. The exterior, clad in black standing seam metal siding with varying rib patterns, echoes the texture of pine tree bark and casts shadows that blend with the forest, creating a dramatic contrast against the lush landscape. A recessed entry clad in warm hemlock breaks the dark facade, offering a welcoming threshold and shelter from the elements. The covered patio, complete with a sauna, fire pit, and sunken hot tub, exemplifies the design's focus on communing with nature. Notably, 'Shadowbox' addresses the challenges of its Wildfire-Urban Interface location through thoughtful design choices. These include a Class A metal roof assembly, non-combustible siding, and WUI-compliant decking, demonstrating a commitment to safety without compromising aesthetics. Inside, a soaring 25-foot ceiling in the great room, coupled with panoramic windows, creates an immersive experience akin to a snow globe in winter. This innovative approach to luxury living in the heart of Montana's wilderness sets 'Shadowbox' apart as a testament to harmonious integration of architecture and nature. Naruse Inokuma Architects | Archicasting

2024 Previous Next
