Located in Yantai's seafront development zone, the 4,960-square-metre building rises as a striking composition of white concrete shells, featuring an outdoor amphitheater, digital exhibition spaces, and a library that appears to float above the ocean. The tower's most distinctive feature is its geometry, which has been meticulously calculated to align with specific solar events throughout the year. The building's northern edge parallels the equinox noon sunlight, while its outdoor theater axis points towards sunrise over Zhifu Island during the summer solstice. Even the entrance tunnel has been positioned to capture the winter solstice sunset. "We wanted to create a cultural 'lighthouse' that bridges ancient wisdom with contemporary urban life," explained OPEN Architecture founders Li Hu and Huang Wenjing. Originally approached to renovate an existing property, BENT Architecture ultimately guided their clients to purchase a more suitable site - a period home with strong character but limitations in layout and sunlight. Rather than contrast the modern addition, the architects chose to thoughtfully engage with and reinterpret the home's original proportions and textures, especially its grand interior volumes and intricate terracotta roof form. The project began by removing a previous rear extension to harness the sun-drenched backyard. New living spaces were then oriented northwards to embrace natural light and frame garden views, defined externally by the home's signature roofline folding down in sympathetic response. The soaring yet cosy interiors draw upon the grandeur of the original while fulfilling all the family's aspirations for their forever home. Bedrooms and utilities remain nestled in the heritage envelope to the front as a nod to the surrounding neighborhood. From the approach, refined volumes clad in cedar rise gracefully, punctuated by expansive south-facing windows that bathe the interior in warm natural light. The suspended main level containsliving spaces that open completely to framed vistas of the St. Lawrence River, while strategically screened openings on the side offer a sheltered vantage point to immerse in the sights and sounds of the mountainous setting. A grounded concrete monolith housing the entrance separates from the primary volume, its mass symbolically rooting the airy residence. Upstairs, the centralized stairwell and corridor form a transitional threshold between the communal areas and private bedrooms, visually connecting front and rear viewsheds. The design approach centers around the "iron" used in cooking, creating a continuous spatial narrative woven with iron elements. A custom iron emblem emblazoned with the restaurant's initial "Y" was developed, utilizing the local cast iron craft tradition. These 3D curved emblems, mass-produced from 3D printed molds, adorn lighting fixtures, tabletops, the logo, and wine displays, unifying the brand identity throughout. The existing building underwent major structural reinforcement, with a large void carved out above the open kitchen. Guests can enjoy the chefs' choreography while circulating through a sequence of public and private dining areas, experiencing contrasting scenes of rustic Bengala red earth walls and vivid indigo blue waterproofed areas. Exterior iron frames juxtaposed with glass and stone hint at the iron-infused interiors. Open kitchen lighting, framing, railings, and balustrades all manifest iron's presence.
