  • Uparati别墅 Wittman Estes | Archicasting

Project Name: Whidbey Uparati House Location: Whidbey Island, United States Design Team: Wittman Estes Total Floor Area: 1,880 sq ft Completion: 2024 Photography: Andrew Pogue Feature: Project - Nestled on the rolling landscape of Whidbey Island, the Uparati House by Wittman Estes emerges as a masterful exercise in architectural restraint and ecological sensitivity. Spanning 1,880 square feet, this contemporary retreat challenges traditional notions of residential design by prioritizing a profound connection with its natural surroundings. The project's core philosophy revolves around the Sanskrit concept of "uparati" – meaning stillness – which is eloquently translated into architectural language. Architects Matt Wittman and Jody Estes have crafted a dwelling that doesn't merely occupy the landscape but becomes an integral part of it. The house appears to float above a meadow, its cedar-clad exterior blending seamlessly with the native Blue Oat Grasses and Mexican Feather Grasses that surround it. Innovative sustainability is at the heart of the design. By employing a Ground Frame foundation system, the architects dramatically reduced the carbon footprint by 77% compared to traditional concrete foundations. The structure follows a precise 4-foot grid, utilizing off-the-shelf TJIs and creating a rational, cost-effective construction method that doesn't compromise on aesthetic elegance. The interior is a testament to minimalist design, with plywood walls, cedar tongue and groove ceilings, and white oak floors creating a neutral canvas that allows the dramatic landscape to become the primary visual narrative. Floor-to-ceiling windows transform the boundaries between interior and exterior, offering panoramic views of Useless Bay and the Olympic Mountains. More than just a house, the Uparati House is a meditative sanctuary – a contemporary retreat that invites its inhabitants to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the natural world. Design Team - Founded in 2012 by Matt Wittman and Jody Estes, Wittman Estes has emerged as a vanguard architectural practice committed to reimagining the relationship between built environments and natural landscapes. Situated in the historic Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle, the firm has distinguished itself through a holistic design approach that transcends traditional architectural boundaries. Recognized for their innovative housing solutions and landscape integration, Wittman Estes has garnered significant industry acclaim, including the AIA National Housing Award and multiple publications in prestigious architectural platforms like Dezeen, ArchDaily, and Dwell. The firm's design philosophy centers on creating interconnected spaces that blur the lines between interior and exterior, responding critically to urban densification and climate challenges. Led by founding principals Matt Wittman and Jody Estes, alongside principal Ashton Wesely, the practice has developed a robust portfolio of residential and multi-family projects spanning the Pacific Northwest, California, and New York. Their work is characterized by a rigorous commitment to sustainability, material innovation, and experiential design that prioritizes human connection to natural environments. With a multidisciplinary team of architects and designers, Wittman Estes continues to push the boundaries of contemporary architectural practice, offering integrated design solutions that are both environmentally responsive and deeply attuned to human experience. 2024 Previous Next

Project Name: The Yard, Dalian Cultural Center Location: Dalian , China Design Team: Neri&Hu Design and Research Office Total Floor Area: 4631 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: DONG Image, Runzi Zhu Feature: Project - Neri&Hu Design and Research Office completed a striking adaptive reuse project in the heart of Dalian, transforming urban industrial heritage through innovative architectural language and thoughtful site integration. The Yard, Dalian Cultural Center converts a 40-year-old chemical research institute compound into a vibrant cultural destination, demonstrating the perfect synthesis of traditional industrial architecture with contemporary design thinking. The compound is strategically positioned near university campuses and software parks, this 4631-square-meter complex captures the innovative spirit of adaptive reuse while paying homage to the region's industrial memory. The project's most distinctive feature lies in its continuous weathering Corten steel system that transforms the original U-shaped building configuration into an enclosed courtyard space, creating a new spatial order through a series of walls, screens and canopies. Neri&Hu's ingenious design solution unifies 6 existing buildings with varying heights and distinct facades. The architects employed Corten steel as the primary surface material, chosen for its industrial relevance and capacity to record the passage of time through weathering processes. This material strategy creates a secondary facade layer that mediates between existing stucco facades and transformed interior spaces, generating architectural poetry through new-old dialogue. The compound's programming encompasses galleries, lifestyle retail, hospitality, cinema, theater, and office space. The former workers' dormitory has been converted into office space, while a small library positioned near the entrance serves the public and surrounding university community. Segmented yet continuous spaces create natural narrative pauses within the circulation path, allowing each functional area to shine within the broader cultural narrative. Most notably, the project transforms what was once an introverted parking lot into a contemplative plaza centered around a large rock feature, drawing inspiration from Chinese garden design principles. This demonstrates how contemporary adaptive reuse can push the boundaries of urban renewal possibilities while respecting historical memory. Design Team - Founded in 2006 by principals Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu in Shanghai, China, Neri&Hu Design and Research Office has established itself as a pioneering force in contemporary Asian architectural practice, consistently bridging rigorous design methodology with cultural innovation technologies. With headquarters in Shanghai, the firm has established itself as a comprehensive interdisciplinary consultancy providing professional design services across diverse building typologies throughout China and the broader international region. Lyndon Neri, a graduate of University of California, Berkeley (Bachelor of Architecture) with a Master's degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design, co-leads the practice with principal Rossana Hu (Bachelor of Architecture from Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan, and Master of Architecture from Princeton University), bringing international academic background to their work. The Neri&Hu name reflects the foundational philosophy of achieving design excellence through cross-cultural collaboration------a principle that manifests throughout their comprehensive project methodology. The firm's design philosophy centers on thorough investigation of diverse building typologies, with particular emphasis on material expression and spatial innovation. This approach synthesizes global perspectives with localized sensibilities, yielding significant works from adaptive reuse projects to contemporary cultural institutions that demonstrate continuous advancement of place-responsive architecture that breaks through in both cultural heritage and modern functionality. Neri&Hu's mastery of new-old architectural language integration systems and material dialogue methodologies, along with applications of advanced adaptive reuse techniques, underscores their contribution to China's evolving architectural discourse. Their recent work on The Yard project exemplifies their persistent pursuit of pushing design boundaries while respecting historical contexts------positioning them as thought leaders in contemporary cross-cultural architectural practice. Neri&Hu maintains headquarters in Shanghai with a vibrant team composed of international collaborators from around the globe, speaking over 30 languages and contributing to the firm's continuously evolving design discourse. This multicultural structure enables the firm to address complex architectural challenges with global consciousness and localized understanding, establishing Neri&Hu as an important contributor to contemporary architectural creation in China and beyond. 2025 Previous Next

STUDIO YY | Archicasting

In the heart of Tokyo's Chiyoda district, the Suido-bashi Office by STUDIO YY architects Yuichi Tanaka and Takeshi Nakamoto reimagines the traditional office building typology. Conceived during the Covid-19 pandemic with startups in mind, the trapezoidal site yields an innovative rectangular office floor plan extended by a triangular "work terrace." This ingenious terrace expands the functionality of the workspaces, allowing for casual meetings, laptop use, and refreshment breaks outside the confines of the standard office. Its design deftly balances efficiency demanded by tenant offices with an open, comfortable environment conducive to productivity. But the terrace is more than just amenity space - it's a conscious urban gesture. As the Chuo-Sobu train line passes by, carrying tens of thousands daily, the architects envisioned the work terrace activating the building's facade with the sight of people collaborating, conversing, and enjoying their labor. In this way, the Suido-bashi Office connects the interior work experience to the surrounding cityscape. In a post-pandemic era where remote work has gained traction, STUDIO YY has created a model for the future workplace - one that values community, cross-pollination of ideas, and integration with the energies of the city around it. Established in 2015, STUDIO YY has swiftly emerged as a tour de force in the architectural realm, spearheaded by the visionary duo of Yuichi Tanaka and Takeshi Nakamoto. EASTERN Design Office | Archicasting

Feature: Project - EASTERN Design Office has crafted an extraordinary residential sanctuary in Japan that distills architecture down to its most monolithic and primordial forms. The Stone Garden Residence is a tour-de-force of sculpted concrete, characterized by two elongated walls that stretch 47 meters across the site, punctuated only by a solitary towering aperture. This daring exercise in reduction eschews ornament, allowing the robust geometry of the rectilinear volumes to speak for itself. By stripping away extraneous detail, the architects have produced a work of profound simplicity and power that seems to emerge from the landscape itself like a ancient remnant. The austerity of the architectural forms is counterbalanced by moments of elegant lyricism - gently curved walls suggest planetary contours, while subtle changes in paving level imbue the hardscape with a sense of undulating terrain. Massive boulders situated in the garden further reinforce the primeval quality. With its commanding presence and remarkable mineral palette, the Stone Garden Residence conjures the sublime emptiness of the desert, oceanic horizons, and celestial bodies. This is an environment distilled to its essence - a place for contemplation amidst the eternal cycles of nature. Design Team - Founded in 2003 by principals Anna Nakamura and Taiyo Jinno, EASTERN Design Office has emerged as one of Japan's most provocative and philosophical architecture practices. Headquartered in the cultural capital of Kyoto, the firm challenges conventional notions of spatial experience through highly conceptual and formally experimental works. EASTERN's portfolio showcases an impressive range, spanning residences, commercial buildings, urban interventions and speculative proposals. From the celebrated Slit House (2005) to recent works like the cavernous Hotel Ninja Black (2019), their designs manifest a stark yet poetic minimalism that distills architecture to its most primordial and sculptural essence. The studio's intellectual rigor is evidenced by their recognition in prestigious competitions, including prizes for major projects in Tianjin, China early in their tenure. Their output has also garnered acclaim through the World Architecture Festival Awards. Under Nakamura and Jinno's design leadership, EASTERN continues to push boundaries and posit architecture as a vehicle for metaphysical exploration. Each built work becomes a profound meditation on fundamental aspects of human existence through space, light, material and form. Previous Next

  • Highnote 公寓 Studioninedots | Archicasting

Feature: Project - The newly completed Highnote Residential Tower in Almere, the Netherlands designed by Studioninedots, is a striking addition to the city's skyline. The 16,000 sqm building features a unique triangular base enclosing a series of interconnected "urban rooms" for the public to enjoy. These multifunctional indoor and outdoor spaces flow into one another, sparking the imagination with their versatility. A continuous colonnade of strong yet abstract lines borders the urban rooms, providing a gradual transition from the vibrant city to the private residences above. The tower itself houses 157 contemporary dwellings, including 67 "friends' apartments" for two sharing tenants - the first such units in Almere. The eye-catching facade of soft red concrete shifts in color throughout the day thanks to its monochromatic palette. Each stacked volume features its own rhythmic grid of robust concrete columns recessed at angles to create dramatic interplay between light and shadow. From the prominent location next to Almere's city hall, Highnote Residential Tower makes a striking first impression at the entrance to the city center with its leaning silhouette visible from all angles. This future-focused building demonstrates creative solutions to challenges like residual urban sites and compact footprints. The firm's raw Amsterdam studio foments creativity through its unfinished, adaptable loft character. Testing materials, curating installations, or hosting parties, the space's flexibility sparks inspiration. By upending conventions, Studioninedots stays ahead of habits. The ensuing designs awaken human imagination. 2024 Previous Next

Ryota Sekiya Architecture | Archicasting

Feature: Project - "Oji House" in Aichi prefecture creates a sense of psychological privacy within a dense neighborhood of similar homes. Seeking to provide a refuge for family life, architect Ryota Sekiya eschewed visual barriers in favor of ambiguous relationships with the surroundings. Manipulating the angles of the walls along four axes obscures perceptions of orientation. The suburban site comprises small, adjoining properties of around 200 sqm. Clients desired spaces and times belonging solely to the family, free of watching eyes. Physical seclusion was possible but Sekiya pursued the liberating effect of losing directional awareness. The home feels unmoored from cardinal points, simultaneously "there" yet unrecognized. The composition overlays rectilinear volumes with diagonal walls and ceilings. Skewed grids displace the expected adjacencies, making the precise locations of neighbors' houses uncertain. As human spatial senses rely on visual references, distorting these cues liberates perception. Varied textures accentuate shifting light and shadow, underscoring sunlight's passage through three courtyards and two open volumes. Though initially disorienting, this freedom sensitizes occupants to the sun's daily movement, linking them to natural rhythms. A rich domesticity emerges as one appreciates the atmospheric qualities of different areas over morning, afternoon and evening. Design Team - Founded in 2015, Ryota Sekiya Architecture creates bespoke homes that support owners' lifestyles in Japan and beyond. Led by principal architect Ryota Sekiya, the Nagoya-based firm brings extensive experience from over 100 residential projects. Offering integrated services from planning to construction, Ryota Sekiya Architecture tailors each commission through close collaboration. Sekiya’s background at a leading housing company enables streamlined delivery of clients’ aspirations. Subsequent work for architectural firms and contractors honed sensitivity to materials and detailing. This holistic approach placed Ryota Sekiya Architecture among an elite group of winners at the 15th Architecture Competition. Blending functionality with atmospheric qualities, the studio realizes buildings as reflections of owners’ values. It construes architecture as a means of enrichment rather than asset creation. Designs emerge from probing discussion to crystallize essentials like natural light over universal principles. Bespoke solutions prove that cherishing family bonds transcends fashion. Sensitively connecting residents to their environment, it homes become treasured backdrops for life’s meanings. 2023 Previous Next

RAD+ar | Archicasting

设计团队: RAD+ar(Research Artistic Design + architecture)是一家印度尼西亚建筑事务所,将设计定位为对空间、文化和可持续性的挑战性探索。 2025 Previous Next

  • Sugarloaf餐厅 Hierarchy Group | Archicasting

Project Name: Sugarloaf at Flockhill Location: Lake Pearson , New Zealand Design Team: Hierarchy Group Total Floor Area: 560 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Dennis Radermacher – Lightforge Feature: Project - Hierarchy Group completed a striking hospitality project in the heart of New Zealand's Canterbury region, transforming a remote historic sheep station in the Craigieburn Valley through innovative architectural language and thoughtful landscape integration. Sugarloaf at Flockhill converts an agricultural heritage site into a world-class dining destination that invites guests to immerse themselves in the stunning landscape of the Southern Alps, demonstrating the perfect synthesis of commercial functionality with New Zealand's farming heritage. The restaurant is strategically positioned to frame the dramatic landscape, this 560-square-meter complex captures the innovative spirit of hospitality design while paying homage to the region's agricultural memory. The project's most distinctive feature lies in its soaring seven-meter-high cathedral-style interior space, completely shrouded in timber to create an atmosphere of warmth and quiet calmness that defines the entire dining experience. Hierarchy Group's ingenious design solution balances the built form with its natural context through deliberate restraint. The architects employed a carefully curated material palette of pared-back timber, raw concrete, and blackened steel both internally and externally. The ebony-stained Western Red Cedar cladding was chosen for its natural resistance properties, with its subtlety taking a backseat to the incredible landscape within which the restaurant resides. The building's programming encompasses world-class dining facilities while maintaining connection to the land. Oversized copper doors lead into the vast cathedral-style space, while a monumental concrete fireplace punctuates the interior, suspended from the ceiling by engineered steel frames hidden within double flues. The masculinity of the building is further balanced by organic curves, introduced through soft furnishings and hardware selections that reference the surrounding mountains through triangular shapes. Most notably, the project demonstrates how contemporary hospitality architecture can achieve commercial functionality while creating spaces that feel intimately connected to their landscape. Verticality serves as a guiding principle throughout the design, reflected in timber and concrete detailing and emphasizing the grandeur of the interior through rhythm and symmetry evident in paired elements throughout the space. Design Team - Founded in 2003 by Design Director Chris Wheeler, Hierarchy Group has established itself as a pioneering force in contemporary Australasian architectural practice, consistently bridging rigorous design methodology with cultural innovation technologies. With headquarters in Auckland and Christchurch, the firm has established itself as a comprehensive interdisciplinary consultancy providing professional design services across diverse building typologies throughout New Zealand and the broader international region. Design Director Chris Wheeler leads the practice with principal team members including lead team Ashton Wright and Wen Ting, along with design team members Jane Wright and Sonia Prince, bringing international academic background to their work. The Hierarchy Group name reflects the foundational philosophy of achieving design excellence through the belief that "the unordinary inspires the extraordinary"——a principle that manifests throughout their comprehensive project methodology. The firm's design philosophy centers on thorough investigation of diverse building typologies, with particular emphasis on material expression and spatial innovation. This approach synthesizes global perspectives with localized sensibilities, yielding significant works from extraordinary residences to civic infrastructure and hospitality developments that demonstrate continuous advancement of place-responsive architecture that breaks through in both cultural heritage and modern functionality. Hierarchy Group's mastery of sustainable innovation and visionary design systems, along with applications of advanced construction techniques and Te Aranga Design Principles, underscores their contribution to New Zealand's evolving architectural discourse. Their recent work on the Sugarloaf project exemplifies their persistent pursuit of pushing design boundaries while respecting historical contexts——positioning them as thought leaders in contemporary cross-cultural architectural practice. Hierarchy Group maintains headquarters in Auckland and Christchurch with a diverse team of over 40 specialists, big thinkers and industry experts contributing to the firm's continuously evolving design discourse. This multicultural structure enables the firm to address complex architectural challenges with global consciousness and localized understanding, establishing Hierarchy Group as an important contributor to contemporary architectural creation in New Zealand and beyond. 2024 Previous Next

  • 越池之家 i.House Architecture and Construction | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Stepping into the sweltering heat of a Viet Tri summer afternoon, we were greeted by the homeowner with a warm smile and a simple request - "Help me transform this into a more livable place." The narrow tube house at 5m x 19.5m with a total area of 292.5 m2 suffered from poor layout, lack of light and ventilation. A dark, cramped staircase monopolized movement and views. The west-facing orientation bore the brunt of afternoon sun, resulting in unbearable heat. The busy street location only exacerbated noise and pollution. Surrounding greenery and open spaces were untapped assets. I.HOUSE embraced the challenge, dubbing it the "Viet Tri House" project. Their deft renovations honored the original while optimizing space and connections. Living, dining, kitchen and garage remained intact, while the rear was radically reconfigured. Relocating the staircase to the front solved circulation issues and enabled cross-ventilation. The bold addition of lush hanging gardens along the western facade provided shade and a visual delight. Private rooms were pushed to the back for seclusion and comfort. By embracing minimalism and natural materials like basalt and concrete, I.HOUSE created a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. Strategic glass windows and doors framed verdant views and amplified natural light. The shifting interplay of light enhances the textural beauty of the entrance's floating basalt wall. Far beyond a practical restoration, Viet Tri House embodies bespoke architectural poetry. Each space sings with harmony and flow, drawing residents and visitors closer to nature through the interplay of volumes, materials and light. A serene urban refuge tuned to modern sensibilities while respecting cultural roots. Design Team - Established in 2007, I.HOUSE Architecture & Construction pioneers Vietnam’s architecture, interior design and construction, specializing in “Eco-minimalism”. Obtaining intellectual property protection in 2012, its elegant, balanced and sustainable approach shapes living spaces by removing unnecessary elements for straightforward, cozy and tranquil environments. I.HOUSE ’s studio fuels exploration where ideas are tested and new frontiers discovered. From brainstorming to models and eco-friendly innovations, architects unite to make their mark. The studio also houses the mission behind each project. From research to design, ideas transformed into built form - every step aims to construct unmatched “first places”. Above all, the studio connects passionate teams who share ideas, thoughts and feedback to develop inspiring eco-minimalist architecture - the architecture of the future. 2023 Previous Next

The 1,210-square-metre building serves as a testament to the seamless integration of modern architectural principles with traditional Finnish craftsmanship. The three-storey structure, commissioned by the Albert de la Chapelle Foundation, stands out for its sophisticated black spruce cladding that pays homage to the region's rich timber architectural heritage while asserting its contemporary identity. The building's distinctive form creates a contextual landmark that harmoniously weaves into the fabric of the 18th-century townscape. What sets Chappe Art House apart is its innovative approach to spatial organization. The building features lofty, hall-like spaces that serve dual purposes – housing museum-grade galleries while accommodating community events. The top level houses the main exhibition galleries, while the ground floor opens into a generous multi-purpose foyer that connects to a shared museum garden, linking it physically and programmatically to the existing Raseborg Museum complex. JKMM Architects, led by founding partner Asmo Jaaksi, has masterfully integrated art installations as architectural elements, collaborating with Finnish artists such as Karin Widnäs and Petri Vainio. The interior spaces showcase exposed timber structure on the upper levels, introducing warmth and tactility to the gallery environments while maintaining museum-grade environmental controls for art preservation. The building's thoughtful design extends to its relationship with its surroundings, featuring carefully framed views of the sea and old town. This attention to context, combined with its technical sophistication and commitment to accessibility, positions Chappe Art House as a significant cultural catalyst for the region, transforming a traditionally seasonal destination into a year-round cultural hub. The project exemplifies how contemporary cultural architecture can both honor local heritage and drive community vitality through innovative design solutions. Design Team - JKMM Architects, established in 1998 in Finland, has emerged as one of the Nordic region's most influential architectural practices, renowned for their holistic approach to design and commitment to social responsibility. Project Name: SAP Labs Munich Campus Location: München, Germany Design Team: SCOPE Architekten Total Floor Area: 25,500 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Zooey Braun Design Features: Project - Located at the heart of Science City Garching, one of Europe's leading hubs for research and teaching, the SAP Labs Munich Campus designed by SCOPE Architekten represents a forward-thinking model for contemporary office architecture and interdisciplinary collaboration. This 25,500-square-meter campus completed in 2024 serves as a gateway to the "Science Loop" – a pedestrian spine that connects all major research clusters – playing a central role in shaping a vibrant and future-oriented academic and corporate environment. The campus brings together about 600 SAP employees and 120 researchers and students from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), fostering a shared environment where science and business work side by side. Conceived as a micro-campus, the building consists of three staggered volumes grouped around a central atrium. This five-story space forms the architectural and social heart of the campus. Structured like an interior public square, the atrium connects research and business functions, workspaces, and communal zones through galleries, terraces, and generous sightlines. A sculptural red spiral staircase and wide seating steps turn vertical circulation into a shared experience. Surrounding the atrium are a range of functions, including a publicly accessible Vital Bar, an auditorium, and an SAP experience area. The spatial layout supports interdisciplinary exchange through open work areas, flexible team spaces, and hybrid meeting zones. Gastronomy plays a key role as a social connector: the centrally located employee restaurant, with its access to a rooftop terrace, serves as a space for informal meetings, spontaneous encounters, and relaxed collaboration across teams. Flexible spaces and private booths offer opportunities for retreat and individual use. The architectural language is defined by silver-anodized pilasters and a clear structural rhythm, giving the façade a balanced and cohesive expression. Inside, raw and honest materials such as exposed concrete, terrazzo, and silver-anodized aluminum surfaces define the character of the interior. Sustainability is embedded throughout the design. Following circular principles, the building uses recyclable, low-maintenance materials, avoids unnecessary finishes, and allows for long-term adaptability. The roof of the parking deck is designed as an accessible terrace and outdoor space, contributing to user well-being and social interaction. As a vibrant intersection of innovation, research, and community, the SAP Labs Munich Campus is more than a workplace. It offers a spatial framework for cross-sector dialogue, academic exchange, and a collaborative, future-ready work culture. Anonym | Archicasting

2024 Previous Next

  • PK 住宅 8x8 Design Studio Co. | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Set atop a hill in Calatagan, Philippines, the striking PK House designed by 8x8 Design Studio serves as a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Filipino Bahay Kubo. The 2400 sqm weekend retreat comprises three cascading volumes that create a tapering pyramidal form, providing shade and framing panoramic views of the surrounding tropical landscape. Anchoring the home is the ground floor Silong, conceived as a fluid communal area with an elongated ironwood dining table at its core. This flows into exterior courtyards and pools, blurring indoor/outdoor boundaries. Cantilevered above is the transparent Bulwagan living pavilion, enveloped in full-height glazing that opens fully via sliding panels. At the top, the private master suite has turnable windows that allow it to become one with the exterior deck. The steel-framed volumes employ overhangs as solar shading devices and are finished with weather-resistant materials to withstand the seaside climate. Inside, bleached wooden surfaces evoke traditional Philippine architecture, offset by contemporary furnishings and sculptural light fixtures. An Inoki soaking tub makes a striking statement in the master bath. Overall, the project translates vernacular influences into a tranquil modern sanctuary that connects with the surrounds. Design Team - Founded in 2012 by partners Adrian Alfonso and Pearl Robles, 8x8 Design Studio is a young architecture firm based in Makati, Philippines dedicated to crafting inspired spatial environments. The name "8x8" stems from the concept of multiplying infinities to develop novel approaches in composing space. Infinities are core to their design process, embedded in each project through studies of site spatial opportunities and program requirements. 8x8 rigorously explores strategies for lightness, object stance, and spatial grain to grow an architectural vocabulary that defines new directions for Philippine architecture. As a small studio catering to select projects, 8x8 offers substantial design control from conception through realization. Detailed 3D modeling and comprehensive attention to detail ensure designs are precisely translated into built form. Specializing in modern architecture, they provide fresh residential, commercial, and hospitality solutions encompassing architecture and interiors. Their recent accolades include Arch+ Planetary Urbanism publication in Germany and the Philippines Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale. 2023 Previous Next

Located on the 4th floor of an 11-story tenant building, the facility was conceived within the constraints of a closed-off environment lacking outdoor space. The designers aimed to create a sauna experience as an "extension of daily life", adopting the concept of a "garden-like architecture" with diverse circulation paths. Seven distinctly characterized saunas are scattered across the floor, connected by a "river-like landscape". The saunas offer varying distances to this interpretive garden, with some featuring large windows framing scenery, others allowing one to plunge directly into a "river", and others with bench seating evocative of a riverbank. The baths and plunge pools traverse the rooms like a continuous waterway, with bridges, stepping stones, floating huts and embankments emerging to complete the riverine atmosphere resonating with the "garden-like architecture" concept. The lounge area is composed simply of level changes in the floor plane, leaving the space open for users to inhabit it freely - pondering which sauna to visit next, or casually sitting down or using surfaces as tables, continuing the experience of the city itself. By gradually transitioning from the urban exterior upon arriving at the 4th floor, Osaka Sauna DESSE aims to provide an experience of "wonderful daily life". Design Team - Founded in 2019, OSTR is an architectural design firm with offices in Osaka and Tokyo. This single-family dwelling, completed in 2022, replaces an older structure while maintaining a deep connection to the site's rich history and breathtaking landscape. The architects faced the challenge of blending traditional elements with modern aesthetics, resulting in a sophisticated interpretation of vernacular architecture. Double-sloped roofs and wood cladding nod to the region's heritage, while clean lines and expansive glazing anchor the home firmly in the present. What sets the Orford House apart is its thoughtful response to the site's topography. The design cleverly utilizes the sloping terrain to create a multi-level living experience that mimics the layers of the forest. From the garden level's grounded spaces to the canopy-like upper floor, the home offers a unique spatial journey that echoes the experience of walking through the woods. The project's commitment to environmental sensitivity is evident in its compact footprint and use of existing site elements. Large windows frame spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and forests, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior. This harmonious dialogue between architecture and nature creates a retreat that is both a testament to contemporary design and a celebration of its picturesque setting. Project Name: Mountainfoot Base Location: Ishinomaki, Japan Design Team: OTA archistudio Size: 82.81 m² Completion: May 2023 Feature: Project - Nestled in the serene rural landscape of Ishinomaki, Japan, Mountainfoot Base is a weekend home designed by Kenyu Ota of OTA archistudio. The project responds to the unique demands of an aging rural population, where nearly 40% of residents are over 65 years old. The home was conceived not only as a private retreat for its owners but as a gathering space where family, friends, and the local community can connect. One of Mountainfoot Base’s defining features is the expansive semi-outdoor "one-room" design, which occupies more than half of the building’s total area. This versatile space serves multiple functions throughout the year, from hosting family events to community gatherings. Its open layout facilitates smooth transitions between the indoor living areas and the exterior courtyard. The use of oak flooring indoors gradually blends into sand-colored tiles and finely textured stone surfaces, creating a seamless dialogue between the house and its natural surroundings. The home is topped with a gently curved roof, which follows the contours of the nearby mountain. This roof not only anchors the structure to the landscape but also enhances its relationship with the environment through subtle reflections of light and shadow on its glossy ceiling. The combination of traditional Japanese construction techniques with modern materials underscores Ota's commitment to creating spaces that are both respectful of the past and adaptive to the future. Another key element of Sanrokudo’s design is its attention to flexibility. The house is designed with dual-layered sliding partitions that allow for various configurations of the living spaces. These partitions create fluid boundaries between indoor and outdoor areas, making the home adaptable for different social functions or seasons. By blending local craftsmanship with innovative design, Ota Architecture Office has created a space that fosters both family life and community engagement, addressing the broader societal challenge of rural depopulation. In this project, Kenyu Ota has not only designed a home but also a social hub that encourages interaction among family members and the wider community. The project offers a thoughtful solution to the challenges of aging rural communities, providing a flexible, adaptable space that bridges the gap between private retreat and communal living. Design Team - Founded in 2019, Ota Architecture Office, led by Kenyu Ota, has quickly emerged as a prominent voice in rural architectural design, with a focus on creating flexible, multifunctional spaces that address the challenges of depopulation and aging communities. Based in Miyagi, Japan, the firm combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary architectural techniques to create buildings that not only serve their functional purpose but also foster community interaction and connection with the natural environment. Under the leadership of Kenyu Ota, the firm’s design philosophy centers around adaptability and sustainability, often addressing the complex social issues faced by rural areas. Ota’s designs incorporate local materials and construction methods, reflecting a deep respect for the cultural and environmental context in which each project is built. The firm’s projects, such as Sanrokudo, showcase a commitment to creating spaces that are not only visually striking but also deeply functional and socially responsible. The house integrates large semi-outdoor spaces with flexible interior layouts, designed to foster both private family life and community gatherings. The project is a reflection of Ota Architecture Office’s commitment to creating spaces that adapt to the changing needs of rural communities, offering solutions that encourage social interaction and support sustainable living. The firm’s ability to blend modern design elements with traditional construction techniques has earned them recognition within Japan and internationally. Their approach to architecture is rooted in a deep understanding of the local context, ensuring that each project resonates with its surroundings while addressing contemporary architectural challenges. 除实践外,该事务所通过其子公司OWIU Goods(陶瓷和家居用品线)和Inflexion Builds(持牌建筑公司)保持着强有力的垂直整合。 2024 Previous Next

Herzog & de Meuron's Bélair-Monange winery emerges from the renowned vineyards of Saint-Émilion as a sculptural monolith, combining heritage and innovation. The Swiss architects have crafted a harmonious dialogue between an existing 1845 stone house and a striking new concrete volume conceived for modern winemaking needs. With the region's medieval quarries and monolithic churches as inspiration, the concrete monolith is partially buried to respect the historic context while optimizing functions like temperature control. Its ochre hue and textured surface subtly reference the existing stone house, which has been revitalized with recessed infills marking former openings like a palimpsest. A cantilevered roof extends from the old house over the new cellars, tying the ensemble together and offering covered spaces that open onto the vineyards during harvest season. Natural light filters in through vertical slits that subdivide the monumental mass. The interior centerpiece is a textured concrete passageway, whose walls are imprinted with an intricate pattern from a 1504 Albrecht Dürer etching also featured on the estate's wine labels. This unique artistic detail connects the architecture to St-Émilion's vinicultural heritage in an immersive promenade through the wine-making process. With an elegant juxtaposition of old and new, inert mineral masses and delicate lace-like embellishments, Bélair-Monange pays tribute to its remarkable terroir through a refined symbiosis of landscape and contemporary architecture. Founded in 1978 in Basel, Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron has emerged as one of our time's most influential and acclaimed architectural practices.
