Designed as a rental office pursuing new ways of working befitting our modern society, the architects aimed to foster interaction and craft an architecture that becomes "a new urban landscape." Defying the monotony of stacked, generic floor plates, the daring design strategically positions the emergency stairwell and sculptural massing to disrupt the "standard floor" on each level. This breakdown of boundaries generates unique, characterful spaces with carefully modulated openings, materials, and volumes that respond to daylighting requirements. Inspired by the surrounding urban fabric of small-scale workplaces interwoven with pedestrian pathways, the architects sought to verticalize this appealing integrated work-live environment. By doing so, they crafted a novel workplace experience that poetically bridges old and new contexts - envisioning a future where tightknit teams and individuals can gather, interact dynamically, and shape the city's evolving identity. This ingenious scheme exemplifies how innovative spatial concepts can breathe new life into dense urban areas, making WOWK Shiba Koen a truly pioneering architectural statement. Alexandre Chaguri Arquitetura | Archicasting

2022 Previous Next

OYO Architects | Archicasting

Project Name: Lyco House Location: Pepingen, Belgium Design Team: OYO Architects Total Floor Area: 312 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Karen Van der Biest Feature: Belgian architecture studio OYO Architects completed the Lyco House project in Pepingen, creating a contemporary sustainable home that exemplifies how bold architectural intervention can transform historic barns into modern living spaces. The project is positioned within the green countryside less than 30 kilometers from Brussels, drawing inspiration from Belgium's rural heritage to create an architectural work that both celebrates agricultural building traditions and embodies innovative adaptive reuse strategies. The project's most compelling design feature lies in its strategic spatial reconfiguration through a dramatic triangular cut carved from the original barn volume. Rather than choosing conventional renovation approaches, the architects masterfully created a central courtyard that transforms the previously dark and enclosed space into a light-filled sanctuary. This ingenious triangular intervention not only floods the interior with natural light but also generates fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces while maintaining the traditional barn facade that preserves the building's agricultural character. The building's spatial choreography unfolds through carefully orchestrated levels, mezzanines, and double-height spaces connected by a striking geometric green steel staircase custom-designed by Atelier Manus. This vertical dialogue enhances the sense of spaciousness within the compact footprint, connecting bedrooms with living areas, kitchen with garden, and living room with elevated terrace, effectively blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior environments. The living spaces center around the kitchen, where a large salmon pink island stands out as a bold focal point. The light pine wood ceiling contrasts with polished grey cement floors, while custom-made dark wood furniture by Hout en Interieur adds warmth and craftsmanship. The living room, positioned on a slightly higher level above the kitchen, features a suggestive wooden ceiling and large windows that open onto the outdoor terrace, creating a unique spatial experience. Material selection demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to heritage and innovation. Carefully selected furniture in neutral tones is complemented by chromatic accents in green and terracotta, generating a soft and natural atmosphere in a warm and balanced environment. To ensure thermal comfort, sustainability, and energy efficiency, OYO Architects incorporated ecological and circular materials during construction, completely renovating the old asbestos roof and installing solar panels and other eco-technologies throughout the house. Denis Dujardin's landscape design plays a crucial role in shaping the setting, achieving fluid and respectful integration with the surrounding rural landscape through the use of local vegetation. Additionally, an ingenious and discrete solution has been developed to manage the area's excess rainwater, channeling it into a natural pond where it is purified and gradually filtered into the ground. Lyco House represents a thoughtful adaptive reuse approach, demonstrating how historic agricultural buildings can be transformed to meet contemporary living needs while respecting their original essence and environmental responsibility. Design Team - OYO Architects stands as a distinguished Belgian architectural practice that has established an exceptional reputation in innovative sustainable design. Founded by Nigel Jooren, Eddy Soete, Veroniek Vanhaecke, Lies Willaert, and Ferran Massip in 2011 and based in Ghent and Barcelona, under the creative direction of founding partner Nigel Jooren and design direction of partner Ferran Massip, the firm has developed a reputation for creating innovative solutions across residential, community development, and industrial architecture typologies. OYO Architects brings exceptional multidisciplinary collaborative experience and deep understanding of sustainable building practices to the practice. Under the leadership of founding partners, supported by a 25-person team including designers, architects, urban planners, and consultative specialists, the practice has garnered recognition for its commitment to ecosystem thinking and dedication to craftsmanship. This combination of holistic approach with contemporary design innovation positions OYO Architects uniquely within Europe's architectural landscape. The firm's design philosophy emphasizes that spatial purpose is as important as architectural execution, not rushing to standardized architectural solutions but believing that architecture should be a result of thorough understanding of social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Through intensive collaboration with clients, they define the project's spatial purpose—the positive impact the space should have on those that inhabit it. OYO Architects believes that the best spaces provide the setting for people to be at their best, challenging convention to reveal the true potential of space. Through this thoughtful synthesis of generous homes, thriving communities, and regenerative industry, OYO Architects has established itself as a significant contributor to contemporary architectural discourse, creating architectural works that are both rooted in place and embrace global design vision. 2024 Previous Next

  • Veron the Shop商店 IOG Arhitectura | Archicasting

< 返回 Veron the Shop商店 IOG Arhitectura 项目名称:Veron the Shop商店 地点:布加勒斯特,罗马尼亚 设计团队:IOG Arhitectura 建筑面积:22 m² 竣工时间:2024年 摄影:Sabin Prodan 设计特色: 项目 - Veron The Shop位于客户家族所拥有的一座中心建筑的前车库内。 Project Name: Veron the Shop Location: Bucharest, Romania Design Team: IOG Arhitectura Total Floor Area: 22 m² Completion: 2024 Photography: Sabin Prodan Feature: Project - Veron The Shop is located in a former garage of a central building owned by the clients' family since its completion. Due to the successive layers of pavement added to the sidewalk and the degradation of the access ramp, the garage remained unused for decades. The client sought to revitalize the unused space by converting it into a small boutique for accessories and fashion items. The 22 sqm space consists of a main room that was intended for parking and a small storage room that, in the proposal, became the fitting room. The challenge was to create a contemporary identity for a small shop that, although street-facing, was not visible to passersby, as it is located in the basement level. The proposal involved fully covering the space with pale pink ceramic tiles, using different formats depending on their placement. The walls were straightened out to accommodate the 10/10 cm format, the floor was tiled with a rectangular format laid in a herringbone pattern, and 5/5 cm tiles were used for the central island and accessory pedestal. The space has a low ceiling height of 230 cm, so to create a heightening effect through reflection, the ceiling was covered with plexiglass in a colour similar to the tiling. To maintain the fluid atmosphere, the metal furniture was detached from the walls. The clothing racks are made of wavy metal bars, with the waves dictating a maximum number of displayed products, thus keeping the space's crisp ambiance. The reception desk is made from a blue metal sheet that wraps around the countertop and is detached from the walls. Even the fitting room is a detached element, consisting of a freestanding mirror ensemble surrounded by a curtain. The only fixed elements remain the central island, covered in 5/5 cm ceramic tiles, and a pedestal for accessories placed near the entrance. The existing visibly deteriorated wooden garage door was not the original one. So for the main entrance, the proposed door replicates the design of the original metal garage door, but using clear glass instead of opaque, to naturally light the interior space and provide street-level visibility. This way, the store becomes a framed picture cut out from the building's facade, contributing to the depth of the street front. When eliminating the destroyed access ramp, a small courtyard was created, framed by the existing garden planters and protected from the sidewalk by using the ground level difference. In this way, the store opens up to the neighbourhood, offering a familiar atmosphere. The main success of the project is the revitalization of an unused space, which, through this intervention, has become part of the local commerce of a vibrant central city neighbourhood. Design Team - IOG Arhitectura is a well-known Bucharest based design & architecture office, founded by Omid Ghannadi and Ilinca Ghannadi in 2010. The office practice is defined by the desire to make architecture like a tailor's shop, with attention to the details that make a design become one of a kind. IOG's projects are known and awarded for the uncanny mix of materials, colours and textures that make each design an immersive experience for its users. Omid Ghannadi is a founding partner of IOG Arhitectura and is credited for his contribution in the design process management and coordination of the entire design process of the projects.

Project Name: SOLASUNA Hotel Location: Yukuhashi City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan Design Team: axonometric Total Floor Area: 853.40 m² Completion: November 2023 Photography: YASHIRO PHOTO OFFICE, REPOSHA Yuta Nishino Feature: Project - Within a beachfront park in Nagai-hama, Yukuhashi City, Fukuoka Prefecture, architectural firm axonometric has created SOLASUNA, an innovative hotel project. This 853.40-square-meter structure ingeniously resolves the boundary between public and private space, serving as a catalyst for revitalizing this once-thriving but later declined coastal area. The design team, guided by the concept of "gentle integration between park and hotel," creatively expanded the existing wooden walkway into a three-dimensional form, creating a massive stepped structure that envelops the entire building. The most striking feature of this design is its multifunctionality: the steps not only serve as a natural circulation path connecting guest rooms to the sea, but also provide spacious terraces accessible to both hotel guests and park visitors, while simultaneously functioning as a louver system shielding from strong eastern sunlight and moderating views from the park. Viewed from a distance, the entire structure resembles a grand amphitheater facing the ocean. The interior spaces demonstrate a profound understanding of the natural environment, creating fluid transitions between the architecture and the surrounding beachfront park. This two-story steel structure occupies 459.50 square meters within a 5,668.70-square-meter site, successfully balancing the public nature of the park with the privacy of the hotel through its innovative stepped design. What distinguishes SOLASUNA is its creation of a "buffer space belonging to neither park, building, nor nature, yet integrating them all." This transitional zone maintains deliberately fluid and ambiguous identity, making the project not merely occupy its site but transform it, establishing new relationships between public recreation, private accommodation, and natural landscape in a seamless, compelling whole. Design Team - Founded in 2021, axonometric is an innovative architectural design firm based in Fukuoka, led by Principal Architect Kei Sasaki, undertaking diverse projects both within Japan and internationally. Sasaki previously worked at the renowned SOU FUJIMOTO ARCHITECTS, possessing rich professional experience as a first-class architect and guest lecturer at multiple universities. The firm focuses on comprehensive spatial design, with services encompassing architectural design, interior design, furniture design, landscape design, and urban planning. The team consists of a group of talented professionals including Managing Director Kaori Kurakazu, several architects and project managers, who collectively infuse each project with innovative thinking and professional spirit. axonometric's work has received multiple international awards for its unique understanding of space and innovative approaches, including the 2024 DFA Design for Asia Gold Award, Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards (APIDA) Gold Award and Jury's Special Prize, and the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2024 Special Prize. Their design philosophy emphasizes the harmonious coexistence of architecture and environment, balancing practical functionality with aesthetic experience. The firm's growth and expansion reflect its firm commitment to architectural innovation and increasing influence in the industry, bringing new perspectives and possibilities to Japan's contemporary architectural design field. 2023 Previous Next

MVRDV | Archicasting

Project Name: Tiffany & Co. Stuttgart Store Location: Stuttgart, Germany Design Team: MVRDV Architecture Office Number of Ceramic Elements: 2829 units Completion Year: 2024 Photographer: Gionata Xerra Studio Feature: Project - Dutch architecture firm MVRDV has reimagined the retail facade with a mesmerizing ceramic diamond screen that transforms architectural surfaces into a dynamic, jewel-like canvas. The Stuttgart Tiffany & Co. store now boasts an extraordinary facade featuring 2,829 hand-crafted ceramic diamonds that seemingly float across the storefront, creating an ethereal architectural intervention that bridges brand identity and innovative design. Inspired by Louis Comfort Tiffany's legendary Favrile glass from the 1890s, the design team developed a meticulously conceived gradient that transitions from Tiffany's iconic robin's egg blue to pristine white. Each diamond is individually slip-cast and glazed using a specialized technique developed in collaboration with Koninklijke Tichelaar, the Netherlands' oldest ceramics manufacturer, resulting in an iridescent surface that shifts dramatically with changing light and viewing angles. The facade's true ingenuity lies in its ability to simultaneously attract attention and integrate seamlessly with the surrounding Dorotheen Quartier's neutral architectural context. Custom steel fixings allow the ceramics to be mounted both externally and internally, creating a dreamlike environment where diamonds appear to hover weightlessly. Strategic variations in diamond density enable selective transparency, allowing glimpses into the store while maintaining an enchanting visual barrier. MVRDV's founding partner Jacob van Rijs describes the design as an attempt to capture the "sense of wonder and enchantment" fundamental to Tiffany & Co.'s brand legacy. By translating the brand's material innovation and jewellery craftsmanship into architectural language, the design creates a stunning visual metaphor that elevates the retail experience from mere commercial space to a true architectural statement. Design Team - MVRDV, established in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries, has grown into a globally influential architecture practice. The firm now operates with a dynamic team of over 300 professionals led by the founding partners alongside Frans de Witte, Fokke Moerel, Wenchian Shi, Jan Knikker, and Bertrand Schippan, with offices strategically located in Rotterdam, Shanghai, Paris, Berlin, and New York. Ryuji Nakamura and Associates | Archicasting

Feature: Project - Nestled in the mountainous Saku Basin of eastern Nagano Prefecture, the JINS Sakudaira shop by Ryuji Nakamura Architects presents an unconventional approach to commercial architecture. The site boundaries seamlessly blend with adjacent restaurants, roads, parking lots, and a park, allowing unimpeded flow from all directions. Inspired by freestanding park pavilions and trees, Nakamura envisioned an omnidirectional building without defined front or back. The resulting design is a subtly squashed 36-sided polygon in plan, ringed by identically shaped windows that bring 360-degree views into the interior. "These site characteristics immediately brought to mind standalone large trees or all-directional pavilion-like structures found in parks," explains Nakamura. "I thought this approach would also suit a shop typology." The circular layout avoids dead ends, enabling visitors to freely circulate through the warm, wood-lined interior while taking in panoramic vistas of the encompassing mountain scenery. Transcending a typical retail environment, the shop invites passersby to linger and experience the architecture's symbiotic relationship with its bucolic basin setting. With an innovative form tailored to the unique terrain, JINS Sakudaira exemplifies how thoughtful design can dissolve boundaries between architecture and landscape. Design Team - Established in 2004, Ryuji Nakamura and Associates has emerged as one of Japan's most acclaimed architectural practices. Led by principal Ryuji Nakamura, the Tokyo-based firm is renowned for its innovative and conceptually rich designs that transcend traditional typologies. HUNE Architects | Archicasting

2025 Previous Next

Archicasting

People's Architecture Office has transformed a seaside villa in Shenzhen into a net-positive energy home through an innovative three-layer envelope system. The Positive Energy House showcases a sustainable approach to renovating existing buildings for enhanced energy efficiency without resorting to demolition and reconstruction. The renovation strategy involved wrapping the original structure with two additional layers. An insulated, airtight skin improves thermal performance, while an outer layer of curvilinear solar roofs generates electricity. These stacked, prefabricated truss structures create a cohesive architectural form while providing shade and maintaining unobstructed views and airflow. A key feature is the interstitial atrium space created between the original building and the new insulated shell. This buffer zone incorporates operable windows for passive ventilation and a four-story climbing wall, catering to the owner's passion for rock climbing. The project demonstrates how older buildings can be upgraded to produce more energy than they consume. By combining active technologies like mechanical ventilation with passive strategies such as stack ventilation and high-performance building envelopes, the architects have created a model for sustainable renovation. This approach not only reduces the building's environmental impact but actively contributes to regeneration, setting a replicable standard for energy-positive retrofits in residential architecture. People's Architecture Office (PAO), founded in 2010 by James Shen, He Zhe, and Zang Feng, is an internationally acclaimed multidisciplinary design practice with offices in Los Angeles, Beijing, and Shenzhen. Studio GAB | Archicasting

2025 Previous Next

  • OZBE咖啡馆 KKOL Studio | Archicasting

Project Name: OZBE Cafe Location: Andong,South Korea Design Team: KKOL Studio Project Area: 495 m² Completion Date: 2025 Construction: IAAP STUDIO Photography: Donggyu Kim Feature: Project - In a striking convergence of industrial aesthetics and organic vitality, OZBE Cafe by KKOL Studio emerges as a masterful exploration of contrast in Andong's vibrant cafe scene. This 495-square-meter establishment, completed in 2025, reimagines the conventional cafe typology by integrating a premium fruit market with sophisticated lounging spaces across four meticulously crafted floors. The project's conceptual foundation draws inspiration from an unlikely source: flowers emerging from concrete crevices. This poetic interpretation manifests throughout the space, where raw concrete surfaces create a deliberately austere backdrop for the vibrant display of fresh fruits and carefully curated vegetation. KKOL Studio's approach challenges the expected discord between industrial materials and organic elements, instead crafting a harmonious dialogue that enhances both. The spatial programming reflects a thoughtful vertical hierarchy: the ground floor houses the fruit market, establishing an immediate connection with street-level activity, while the upper floors transition into more intimate lounging spaces. The material palette is anchored by the interplay between exposed concrete and warm maple hardwood, creating a sophisticated foundation that allows the colorful produce to become an integral part of the interior design scheme. What sets OZBE apart is its inclusive design approach, addressing the diverse needs of its anticipated clientele. The studio has developed a series of bespoke furniture pieces that appeal to multiple generations – from playful curved benches with slatted details that intrigue younger visitors to ergonomically considered seating arrangements for mature patrons. This attention to multi-generational functionality elevates the space beyond mere aesthetic consideration into a truly user-centric environment. The result is a revolutionary retail-cafe hybrid that transcends conventional categorization, where industrial architecture serves as a canvas for celebrating natural abundance, and where every design decision reinforces the core concept of vital energy emerging from structural austerity. Design Team - KKOL Studio, established in July 2021 in South Korea, has rapidly emerged as a notable presence in contemporary spatial design. Under the leadership of founding partners Euisun Yoon and Hongbeom An, the practice operates as an intimate atelier-style studio, bringing a meticulous approach to architectural and interior interventions across various scales. The studio's design philosophy centers on the democratization of spatial quality, rejecting the conventional hierarchy of project scale in favor of a more nuanced, narrative-driven approach. Their methodology is characterized by a holistic design process that considers every spatial element as an integral part of the overall architectural composition. Since its inception, KKOL Studio has developed a distinctive portfolio that spans retail, hospitality, and commercial sectors. Their work is marked by a sophisticated understanding of materiality and an ability to create immersive spatial experiences that transcend typical programmatic constraints. The studio's recent completion of OZBE Cafe exemplifies their talent for balancing raw architectural elements with refined details and thoughtful programming. The practice maintains its creative integrity through a deliberately selective approach to commissions, operating with a core team of four designers who oversee all aspects of the design process, from conceptual development through to material specification and construction documentation. This hands-on methodology ensures a consistent level of quality and attention to detail across all projects. 2025 Previous Next

Project Name: Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum Location: Shenzhen, China Design Team: Zaha Hadid Architects Size: 128,276 m² Completion: 2025 Photography: Virgile Simon Bertrand Feature: Project - As a pioneering example of sustainable design excellence, Zaha Hadid Architects has created the Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum — a landmark facility that integrates scientific exploration with innovative exhibition spaces. The 128,276-square-meter structure represents a significant advancement in sustainable architecture, serving as a core cultural facility in the Greater Bay Area, showcasing scientific endeavor, ground-breaking research, and future possibilities of technology. The landmark Guangming District installation showcases the design's core innovation: a distinctive spherical form with a facade that transitions from deep blue to various shades of grey, evoking the dynamic movement of celestial bodies in space. Strategically positioned adjacent to Guangming Station of Shenzhen's metro network, the building responds to its location as a solid volume facing the city, defining the southeast corner of the new Science Park, while extending westwards and transforming into a dynamic sequence of terraces overlooking the park. Materiality plays a crucial role in the project, particularly the first large-scale application of dual color INCO technology in China. By precisely controlling an electrolyte formula and oxidation time, a nano-scale oxide film is generated on the surface of the steel, giving the facade a self-protecting, self-cleaning micro-layer that enhances resilience to weather and corrosion, while enriching the stainless steel with texture and color without any painting. What distinguishes the Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum from conventional museums is its comprehensive approach to sustainability. The project aims to achieve the highest three-star rating of China's Green Building Evaluation Standard, with passive design features combined with smart management networks operating high-efficiency systems projected to reduce the building's energy consumption to 15.47 kgce/sqm per year, subsequently lowering emissions from electricity demand to an estimated 125.89 kWh/sqm annually. The interior design revolves around a spectacular central atrium, with multiple galleries emerging from the floor and walls of the atrium or floating above it, providing intuitive direction for visitors. The atrium features a large glazed wall facing the park, blurring the boundary between inside and out, inviting natural light, landscapes, and human curiosity into the heart of the building. The Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum emerges as a significant contribution to contemporary architectural practice — a project that merges scientific discovery, architectural innovation, and environmental stewardship, proving that sustainable design need not compromise architectural expression and user experience. Design Team - Zaha Hadid Architects is an internationally-acclaimed practice based in London's Clerkenwell district, founded by the late architectural master Zaha Hadid in 1979, and led by Principal Patrik Schumacher following Hadid's passing in 2016. The project, completed in 2023, demonstrates how standardized modular construction can create sophisticated educational spaces while maintaining architectural identity across multiple city locations. At the heart of the design is an ingenious system of "U"-shaped reinforced concrete modules that can be stacked and interlocked, creating a distinctive architectural language that is both functional and visually compelling. What sets these kindergartens apart is their remarkably efficient construction timeline – all four facilities were built simultaneously across different Lisbon neighborhoods in just 13 months. This achievement was made possible through the complete prefabrication of all structural elements, including foundations, under controlled factory conditions before on-site assembly. Each kindergarten, ranging from 570 to 760 square meters, is organized around a central circulation spine that houses not only movement flows but also cleverly integrates essential building services. The two-story layout maximizes the limited urban plots while ensuring all activity rooms maintain direct outdoor access – either to ground-level playgrounds or upper-floor terraces. The buildings' exteriors proudly display their modular DNA, with visible joints and clear tectonic expressions that reveal how each prefabricated piece connects to form the whole. This honest architectural approach extends to the material choice of reinforced concrete, selected for its durability and low maintenance requirements while fulfilling the municipality's brief for creating recognizable public facilities across the city. The project represents a significant advancement in prefabricated educational architecture, demonstrating how standardized construction methods can deliver high-quality spaces while minimizing community disruption during the building process. It offers a compelling model for rapid urban educational infrastructure development without compromising on design quality or user experience. Design Team - SUMMARY, established in 2015 at the Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto, has emerged as a pioneering force in prefabricated architectural solutions. Under the leadership of founder Samuel Gonçalves, the practice has developed a distinctive approach to modular construction that bridges the gap between pragmatic building solutions and architectural innovation. The firm, currently comprising ten professionals including architects and project managers, has gained international recognition for their systematic approach to prefabrication. Their expertise was notably demonstrated in the recent completion of four modular kindergartens in Lisbon, which showcased their signature "U"-shaped reinforced concrete modular system. SUMMARY's commitment to advancing prefabricated architecture has earned them prestigious accolades, including the Monocle Design Awards' Best in Construction (2022), ArchDaily's Best New Practices (2021), and Dezeen's Emerging Architect of the Year Public Vote Winner (2020). "We wanted to create a cultural 'lighthouse' that bridges ancient wisdom with contemporary urban life," explained OPEN Architecture founders Li Hu and Huang Wenjing. "The building transforms invisible natural energies into tangible experiences." The structure comprises two primary shells – an outer protective layer and an inner concave surface that functions as an acoustic collector, amplifying the sound of waves. Between these shells, a zigzagging circulation path houses digital exhibitions, while the summit contains a library and the "Phenomena Space" – a semi-outdoor void featuring a central oculus and a pool that creates a mesmerizing water vortex every hour. Notably, the project emphasizes passive environmental strategies, largely avoiding air conditioning in favor of natural ventilation techniques. The design incorporates tunnel cooling, thermal mass, and chimney effects to maintain comfort while minimizing energy consumption. The building sits atop a seashell-shaped plaza that doubles as a sophisticated timekeeper. Concentric elliptical rings radiate from the center, with the tower's shadow tracking time along a water channel during equinoxes. The plaza's outer ring features fountains coordinated with the 24 Solar Terms of the Chinese lunar calendar and synchronizes with ocean tides. Through its innovative fusion of astronomical alignments, environmental consciousness, and cultural programming, Sun Tower stands as a contemporary monument that celebrates humanity's enduring connection to natural cycles and celestial rhythms. Design Team - OPEN Architecture, founded in New York in 2003 by Li Hu and Huang Wenjing, has emerged as one of China's most innovative architectural practices, establishing its Beijing office in 2008. The firm has garnered international recognition for its progressive approach to architecture that seamlessly integrates cultural sensitivity with environmental consciousness. Led by founding partners Li Hu and Huang Wenjing, both graduates of prestigious institutions (Tsinghua University, Princeton University, and Rice University), OPEN has cultivated a portfolio of groundbreaking projects that challenge conventional architectural paradigms. Their work spans cultural, educational, and public realm interventions, with notable projects including the UCCA Dune Art Museum, Chapel of Sound, Sun Tower, and Tank Shanghai. The practice's design philosophy centers on creating meaningful connections between architecture, nature, and human experience through what they term "radical poetry" - combining bold conceptual thinking with poetic spatial qualities. This approach has earned them numerous accolades, including AIA International Design Awards, the Civic Trust Awards, and recognition as Wallpaper* China Designers of the Year 2022. Currently structured with five directors supporting the founding partners, OPEN continues to push boundaries in architectural design through their research-driven methodology and commitment to sustainability. Their work consistently demonstrates how architecture can mediate between urban development and environmental stewardship while creating spaces that enhance human interaction and cultural exchange. 2024 Previous Next

2025 Previous Next

CASE-REAL | Archicasting

Feature: Project - The recently completed Suzukake wagashi store in Tokyo's Azabudai Hills is a masterclass in creating a retail space with a distinct sense of place. Designed by CASE-REAL, the 108 sqm shop leverages its unique dual-entrance layout to establish two distinct atmospheres that harmonize into a cohesive whole. Approaching from the internal pathway, visitors first encounter an ample serpentine stone-clad wall backdrop that provides visual weight to the kitchen and imbues the shopfront with a sense of ceremony. The material palette strikes a skillful balance between richness and restraint - washed plaster walls, ash wood built-ins, and limestone finishes allow the colorful wagashi displays to shine while still feeling distinctly Japanese. Considered details like the recessed doorway to the external pathway entrance transition visitors to a more intimate scaled vestibule with engawa-inspired details. CASE-REAL's sensitive spatial planning resolves the potentially disjointed dual access points into a retail interior that feels at once modern and deeply rooted in tradition - an apt reflection of the wagashi craft itself. The sumptuous yet serene store is sure to elevate the Azabudai Hills shopping experience for discerning visitors. Design Team - Founded in 2000 in Fukuoka by Koichi Futatsumata, CASE-REAL is an architectural and interior design studio making waves in Japan and abroad with its creative spaces attuned to cultural essence. Leveraging technological innovation and artistic expression, CASE-REAL's diverse portfolio includes hospitality, retail, workplace, and residential projects. Signatures like the soothing Suzukake wagashi shop and immersive Arts & Science Fukuoka hybrid store display the studio's knack for imbuing atmospheres with a distinct sense of place. Currently led by Koichi Futatsumata along with project heads Koichi Shimohira and Yasushi Arikawa, CASE-REAL continues to garner accolades with recent shortlistings for Dezeen and FRAME Awards testifying to its ascent as one of APAC’s leading emerging practices. 2023 Previous Next
